Abstract:Based on the component method of EuroCode3, a new component model to evaluate properties of T-stub connections under large deformation condition has been proposed in this paper. Firstly, the T-stub connection was breakdown into several components. And then those components was equivalent to bilinear springs. Finally the multi-spring model of T-stub connection was set up to describe its load deformation behaviour. With the purpose of verifying and calibrating the proposed model, a series of case studies were carried out and corresponding finite element models has also been set up. Results of FEM and multi-spring model fit well each other. And the applicability of the proposed model can be testified by the parametric study. The method of this paper can describe the behaviour of T-stub connections under large deformation condition, which can be a useful improvement to conventional design codes.

Abstract:The connection is one of the most important members in the structural frame, and its behaviour greatly influences structural collapse patterns and anti-collapse ability. According to the concept of the component method, a semi-rigid beam-to-column connection can be defined as an assembly of a series of equivalent T-stubs and relevant components. In order to actualise the large deformation simulation of the connections, both axially and rotationally, a new multi-spring component model to evaluate properties of T-stub connections has been proposed in this article. The nonlinear property of a T-stub is described by a multi-spring system, which is used to trace the entire T-stub post-yield behaviour. A series of experiments with T-stub connections has been performed to calibrate the proposed model. The load curves and failure mode of the experiments, three-dimensional finite element method and multi-spring component modelling fit well with each other. A case study of beam-to-column semi-rigid connections has also been performed to further illustrate the usage of the T-stub component model in beam-to-column semi-rigid connections.
Experimental Investigation of Circular Steel Tubes with Tapered Ends Subjected to Bending,compression and Torsion

Abstract:The formulas for computing load-bearing capacity and buckling strength of circular steel tube with tapered ends and subjected to bending,axial compression and torsion are not available in current codes.An experimental investigation was carried out on such steel tube columns to analyze their load-carrying capacity,failure patterns,load-displacement curves and load-strain curves.The experimental results indicated that the failure patterns of specimens are all local buckling.The position of buckling will be changed toward inside in case a small gradient is offered,the tubes will thus gain better ductility.The members with tapered ends have better load-carrying capacity than those with the uniform cross-section.The enhancement of load-carrying capacity is directly affected by gradient of the cone,it could reach as high as 40% when the plastic hinge occurred at the interface between the cone and the middle tube.

Abstract:A series of bending tests of thin-walled concrete-filled cold-formed steel tubes(CFST) were presented in this study. A total of 4 specimens were tested, two square specimens and two rectangular specimens, with width to wall thickness ratio ranging from 50 to 100. The failure mode and ultimate capacity of test specimens were obtained. A novel nonlinear analytical model was developed for the hin-walled CFSTs under bending. Nonlinear constitutive models of the confined concrete and steel tube, corner strength enhancement of the steel cross-sections, welding residual stress and local buckling were considered in the developed model. The predicted capacity calculated using the model proposed and it si shown that the model predictions agreed with the test result well. In addition, predictions from current AISC standard, Eurocode 4 and model proposed by other researcher were also compared with the test results.

Abstract:Based on the experimental investigation of concrete-filled steel tubular CHS (circular hollow section) connections, a finite element model was established using ABAQUS and verified against test results. It is shown that the developed model predict the ultimate strength and failure mode of test specimens well. Material properties, sizes of weld and contact interaction between concrete and steel were considered in the developed finite element model. Modified Mohr-Coulomb criterion for ductile fracture was used to define fracture criterion of the steel tube. Distribution of shear stress at the punching shear face was examined and a general equation describing stress distribution was proposed. Parametric study was performed to determine the parameters in the proposed equations. Finally, design equations for ultimate strengths of concrete-filled steel tubular CHS connections failed in chord punching shear failure were proposed.
Investigating local buckling in highly slender elliptical hollow sections through analysis of 3D-printed analogues

Abstract:Tubular structural members with slender cross-sections are susceptible to failure through local buckling of their tube walls. Previous numerical studies of steel elliptical hollow sections in compression predicted the local buckling modes and the ultimate loads of particularly slender specimens, with the results used to calibrate design methods for slender elliptical sections. Although these numerical parametric studies were conducted across a wide slenderness range, it was only possible to validate the models against experimental results in the low slenderness range since commercially available steel EHS are intended to satisfy non-slender geometric limits prescribed by structural design codes. Such limitations to the experimental scope are circumvented in the present study through testing of highly slender specimens produced using additive manufacturing techniques. A total of eight specimens of various cross-sectional aspect ratios and tube wall thicknesses were fabricated at London South Bank University using additive manufacturing techniques, which were then tested in compression; the observed load-deflection behaviour, ultimate loads, longitudinal strains and failure modes are discussed. Through appropriate rescaling of relevant parameters, design predictions for the ultimate load of the 3D printed analogues are obtained using a design method intended for use with steel elliptical hollow sections. It is shown that the design predictions are safe-sided when compared to the present experimental results, with the accuracy generally increasing with aspect ratio and slenderness.

Study Of Mechanical Performance Of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Joints

Abstract:With the development of large span and heavy load modern engineering, concrete-filled steel tubular truss and laced column structures appear constantly. The joints of these structures are mostly circular Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular (CFST) joints. In order to solve the problem of lacking of the research on the mechanical properties of CFST joints, three CFST T-joints and one Circular Hollow Section (CHS) T-joint which was used for comparing were tested under reversed cyclic axial loading, and three CFST T-joints and one CHS T-joint were tested under reversed cyclic in-plane bending loading. The failure modes and the ultimate load carrying capacities of CFST T-joints were concluded and the load-displacement hysteretic curves were also studied. The test results showed that the failure modes of CFST joints and CHS joints with the same geometry were completely different, the ultimate load carrying capacities of CFST joints were much higher than that of CHS joints, which shows that adopting a concrete-filled chord member is the most effective way to improve the strength of the unstiffened tubular joints when subjected to axial loading and in-plane bending, the energy dissipation mechanisms of CFST joints and CHS joints were completely different, but both CFST joints and CHS joints had excellent seismic performances. The energy analysis of CFST joints under differing loading conditions indicated that there was a significant distinction in terms of the energy dissipation mechanism. The axially loaded specimens dissipated energy mainly by plastic deformation of the brace, while the in-plane bending loaded specimens dissipated energy mainly by punching shear of the chord wall at the intersection area. This research can not only provide scientific basis for the design of CFST joints, but also effectively promote the application of CFST truss and laced column, and can promote the improvement and development of the design theory of concrete-filled steel structures.

Abstract:Nodal joints uniting separate elements of steel structures are the most important parts of the whole structure. For the tensile zone of a connection, the study of its stress-strain state up to the limit of exhaustion of its bearing capacity is of greatest interest. There exist different design approaches to obtain the ultimate capacity of a tension-zone of a steel joint, both numerical and analytical methods. In the presented paper this has been realized using a general-purpose finite element analysis package. The application of numerical methods for modelling the tensile performance of the T-component makes it possible to compensate for the lack of data on full-scale experimental studies. Despite the widespread use of finite element analysis packages, there are still no clear guidelines for creating numerical models of such connections. Numerical analysis has taken into account important effects such as the nonlinear behavior of the material and the contact interaction of its individual elements. Finite element analyses should represent the reality in an accurate way while not being too time consuming to be set up and run. That means appropriate parameters and phenomena, such as element types or loading procedure, should be compiled in a way suitable to the problem at hand, so that the discrepancy between reality and model is sufficiently small. A FE-model with wrong representation of reality can be solved correctly with FEA, but will thereby provide inaccurate results. Therefore, one needs understanding about FE parameters and their influence on time to execute the procedure effectively. When these conditions are met, the possibility to analyze larger number of T-stubs with less user modification opens up. The analytical method for the calculation of the properties of a bolted joint established by the structural Eurocodes proposes the T-stub as a component for the characterization of the tension and compression zones in moment joints. Using the component method, which is the basis for the calculation of joints according to the EN 1993-1-8 design codes, the value of the ultimate tensile force for the T-shaped component of the dimensions adopted in the work was obtained; the obtained values of the ultimate forces were further used in the numerical experiment. Abstract:The stainless-steel tube has been used to construct Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular (CFST) columns because it has a high resistance to fire and corrosion, good durability, and aesthetic appearance compared to the carbon steel tube. However, there is very little published research on eccentrically loaded circular Concrete-Filled Double-skin Steel Tubular (CFDST) slender beam-columns composed of an outer stainless-steel tube and an inner carbon-steel tube. In line with this, this paper presents a fiber-based simulation model for predicting the structural performance of CFDST slender columns with external circular stainless-steel tube under eccentric compression. The simulation modeling of load-deflection curves and load-moment interaction diagrams for slender CFDST beam-columns is developed and verified by the experimental results. The verified simulation model is then used to study the effects of geometric and material properties on structural performance. The range analysis is applied to the orthogonal design to identify the relative significance of the factors that influence the structural response. The orthogonal design covers CFDST beam-columns with a hollow ratio ranging from 0.1 to 0.8. The results indicate that the column slenderness ratio is the most significant factor, followed by the loading eccentricity ratio, the outer tube thickness, stainless steel proof stress, concrete strength, and carbon steel yield strength. The accuracy of the design method specified in Australian standard AS/NZS 2327, and the proposed design methods are evaluated. The proposed equation provides accurate strength predictions of CFDST slender columns where the external skin is made of stainless steel.

Abstract:Traditional structural steel manufacturing routes typically produce prismatic members comprising of flat plate elements. Under compressive actions, the capacity of these sections is often dominated by plate instability of the lowest buckling mode. The current study involves compressive testing of 6 different configurations of non-prismatic stub columns, comprising of pre-defined surface waves tested at 3 different slendernesses and 3 amplitudes including control prismatic sections. Absolute and normalised load-displacement curves are generated to compare against the control sections and assess the potential increase in strength and stiffness, and the samples' weights are measured to evaluate the relationship between material use and strength when using this method of strengthening. Tensile coupon tests are also carried out on coupons printed from the same material to define material parameters, and an extensive parametric study is undertaken with numerical modelling software. The best case evaluated in this study indicated a strength gain of 89.9% over a control section with an equal volume of used material. Eurocode-compatible buckling characterisation curves are then provided for two of the best performing sections. This study highlights the possibilities of this technology, paving the way towards unprecedented efficiency in future steel construction.

Abstract:The structural performance of stainless steel beam-to-column joints with double extended end-plate connections is numerically studied in this paper. Finite element (FE) models were developed and validated against previously reported experimental results including static and cyclic loading tests on stainless steel double extended end-plate beam-to-column joints. Based upon the validated FE models, parametric studies were carried out to examine the impact of key parameters, such as the stainless steel grade, the bolt pretension force, the column axial force, the end-plate thickness, the bolt diameter and the presence of rib stiffeners, on the structural behaviour of stainless steel beam-to-column joints. The component method specified in EN 1993-1-8 for design of joints was used to develop a modified design method, which accounts for the strain hardening characteristics of stainless steel and the strengthening effect of the rib stiffeners. Moreover, the influence of the panel zone thickness and the end-plate thickness on the hysteretic performance of stainless steel joints was explored, and the ability of the modified method to accurately predict the hysteretic properties of joints under cyclic loading was also demonstrated. It can be concluded that the newly proposed design approach based on the component method leads to more accurate predictions of both the static and the hysteretic properties of stainless steel end-plate beam-to-column joints.

Abstract:The local buckling behaviour of high strength steel (HSS) hexagonal hollow section (HexHS) stub columns encompassing three different fabrication routes under axial compression is numerically investigated in this study. Finite-element (FE) models were developed and validated against the experimental results. The validated FE models were subsequently employed to carry out parametric studies to expand structural performance data covering a wider range of geometries and cross-section slenderness as well as two different steel grades. The obtained results from FE models in line with the experimental data were used to evaluate the applicability of the existing design codes and the design approaches in literature to HSS HexHS under pure compression. The comparison indicates that the current slenderness yield limiting values in design codes cannot be simply extended to HSS HexHS stub columns. All the design codes exhibit a high degree of conservatism due to the lack of consideration for strain hardening whereas the Continuous Strength Method (CSM) was found to provide more accurate predictions than the Direct Strength Method (DSM). Modified design approaches are proposed to improve the accuracy of the strength predictions for HSS HexHS stub columns.

Abstract:Joints are critical members that play an important role in controlling the disproportionate collapse process of structures under extreme loading conditions. In Eurocode 3 Part 1–8, reference is made to the "component-based method" for the design of structural joints in building frames. Compared with the application of this method to beam-to-column joints for H-sections, information on the components of steel beam-concrete filled steel tube (CFST) joints is much less readily available. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the calculation methods for the key quantities of the full force-displacement relationships, including resistance and deformation capacity, for all the connection components in different types of steel beam to CFST column joints. The accuracy of these relationships is assessed in the context of their applications as input data to the component-based method to calculate the full load range behaviour of complete steel beam-CFST column joints. The results show that there exist methods that can be used to accurately calculate the resistance of all the components, except for the component of extended Hollo-bolt to CFST column in tension. However, there is no existing method that can be used to accurately calculate deformation capacities of the joint components. Furthermore, this review indicates that improvements are needed to enable steel beam to CFST column joints to possess sufficient rotation capacities so as to allow the structures to control disproportionate collapse under extreme loading conditions.

Abstract:In the present study, a comprehensive experimental investigation is conducted on eight Concrete-Filled Tube (CFT) specimens subjected to bending loads under cyclic conditions. The loading regimes included constant and variable amplitude cycles. Strain was precisely measured using strategically placed gauges, and the data generated load-displacement and moment-curvature curves. A novel analytical model is developed and calibrated to match the experimental outcomes; this model incorporates the Mander stress-strain relationship for confined concrete and the Ramberg-Osgood model for steel. The study provides new insights into the mechanical behaviour of CFTs under bending, particularly in terms of strain distribution, load-displacement characteristics, and failure modes. This research serves as a strong foundation for future finite element modelling and design optimization of CFT structures, enhancing their safe and efficient use in engineering applications.

Abstract:In the current steel design code, the ultimate strength of a steel tubular joint with bolted connection has not been specified in detail. In this paper, the failure mode and the load-displacement behavior of a full scale steel tubular joint with bolted connection subject to biaxial compression were investigated. Moreover, the strain distribution of annular plate and chord member in different loading stage, such as design strength stage and ultimate strength stage, were also discussed. It results that the failure mode of the steel tubular joint with bolted connection is local buckling and the rib stiffener may effectively prevent the out-of-plane buckling of whole joint. Taking account of the impact of initial imperfection, FEM analysis is able to predict the mechanical behavior and the failure mode of such tubular joint well, and the ultimate strength obtained by FEM analysis is slightly higher than experimental value.

Abstract:To study the mechanical performance of circular steel-reinforced concrete-filled steel tubular (SRCFST) members under pure bending loads, a total of six specimens with various parameters, i.e., cross-section types of profiled steel (I or cruciform section), the loading directions (along strong or weak axis) for I section profiled steel and shear-span ratios (m = 2.42 or 1.82) were tested. Failure modes, lateral deflection, longitudinal strain distribution, bending moment-curvature (M-phi) curves and flexural capacity were analysed, respectively. In addition, the numerical models of SRCFST members were established in ABAQUS to analyse the flexural behaviour. Moreover, a simplified calculation formula was also proposed to predict the flexural capacity. The results show that specimens exhibit a flexural failure mode instead of local buckling. Deflection curves of the specimens are similar to the sinusoid shape. The loading directions and cross-section types of profiled steel would affect the flexural capacity of SRCFST members owing to the changing of the moment of inertia. The FEA model was verified by the experimental results and good agreements were achieved in terms of the failure mode and M-phi curves. The steel tube carries most of the bending moment by analysing the M-phi curves of each component. In addition, the test results are compatible with the proposed formulas, and therefore the calculation method could be used in engineering design.

Abstract:This research presents a unified numerical model for analyzing the performance of concrete-filled stainless-steel tubular (CFSST) stub columns with different cross-sectional shapes. The model converts the cross-sections of the CFSST columns with various shapes into an equivalent circular column, and a new concrete constitutive relation is proposed to estimate the compressive strength of confined concrete of CFSST columns with different cross-sections. To simulate the axial load–strain curves of CFSST columns, a computer program is used that converts the various cross-sections of CFSST columns into equivalent circular columns. To validate the model, 196 tested columns with various cross-sections gathered from previous literature are used. The unified model proposed is found to be accurately predicting the performance of CFSST columns. The model is then used to investigate the effects of concrete, steel yield stress, and the depth-to-thickness ratio on the different radius ratios and aspect ratios of CFSST columns. A unified design formula is also suggested to calculate the ultimate strength of CFSST columns with various shapes, and the proposed simplified model is shown to provide a more accurate estimation when compared to existing design codes.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for high-strength steel (HSS) in constructions, concerns on local stability of HSS members are highlighted when engineers aim at making full use of the provided high strength. Therefore, L- and T-shaped thin-walled tubes with a single-corrugation in the relative slender component plates are proposed to postpone the occurrence of local buckling and take the advantage of high strength. An experimental study is conducted to examine the influence of the single-corrugation on the local stability of axially compressed special-shaped thin-walled tubular columns, including three L-shaped and five T-shaped hollow sections fabricated from Q690 HSS plates. A finite element model is developed using ABAQUS/Explicit and verified by the behavior of the tested columns. Then, a series of parametric analyses on the corrugation geometric parameters are performed. Based on the proposed buckling stress formulae for steel plates with single corrugation, the effective width method is modified to predict the resistance of L- and T-shaped thin-walled tubes with single-corrugations. The modified effective width method shows a good agreement with the experimental and numerical results.

Abstract:A circular concrete-filled steel tube (CCFST) component is subjected to tension in certain practical engineering projects. Several past experimental programs have stressed that the apparent strength and stiffness enhancement phenomena observed in tensile circular steel tubes can be attributable to the filled concrete. In this study, an analytical model for describing the strength and stiffness enhancement of the circular steel tubes is developed. The interface performance between the steel tube and filled concrete is considered in the model. Based on the proposed analytical model, simplified design formulae for strength and stiffness enhancement coefficients are proposed. These design formulae indicate that the confining and fibre-reinforcing effects lead to the strength improvement, while the confining effect, fibre-reinforcing effect, and tension-stiffening effects all contribute to the stiffness enhancement. Then, a design procedure for determining the axial tensile strength and stiffness of CCFSTs is provided, and a design example is also demonstrated. The accuracy of both the proposed analytical model and design formulae are validated by the results of two groups of axial tension tests, which demonstrates that the full-process load-strain behaviour can be accurately captured by a bilinear model based on the proposed analytical formulae. Finally, analytical solutions for the longitudinal stress distributions of the steel tube and filled concrete are provided for a better understanding of the tension-stiffening effect. In addition, the contributions of different effects to strength and stiffness enhancements are quantitatively evaluated for all the test specimens.

Abstract:In order to study the torsion behavior of concrete filled steel tube columns, a theoretical model for process analysis of concrete filled steel tubes under axial force and torsion was established. The laminated tubes method was employed for dividing the column section. Based on geometrical, material constitutive and equilibrium equations, linear distribution assumption for shear strain on the section was introduced and a concrete material model considering the confined effect of steel tube and compression softening caused by transverse tension was proposed. The theoretical results were validated by tests. The torsion behavior of concrete filled steel tube could be analyzed using this theoretical model.
