Abstract:Helium (He) plasma irradiation to tungsten leads to formation of He bubbles and fiberform nanostructures called fuzz on the surface. Although the fuzz growth condition and growth rate have been well investigated, deposition of W together with He ions can change the He effect significantly. For example, the deposition leads to large-scale structures such as nano-tendril bundles and mm-thick large-scale fiberform nanostructures. In this review, current understanding of deposition effects on He irradiation are summarized, and the influence to fusion devices is discussed mainly from the view point of arcing.

Abstract:In the fusion reactor ITER, helium (He) ions will irradiate the first wall. Under He irradiation conditions, the tungsten (W) wall may develop a foam filament structure, so-called fuzz. Recently, nano-tendril bundles (NTB) and large-scale fiberform nanostructure (LFN) were observed to develop on W surfaces under He irradiation conditions close to the one where fuzz formed. However, the mechanisms leading to NTB and LFN still need to be fully understood. This work reports the formation of NTB without He ion irradiation for the first time. The NTBs were formed by evaporation of W in He, Ar, Ar/H 2 O mixture or O 2 . The evaporations were performed on silicon substrates, at room temperature (RT) and for pressures between 20 to 100 Pa. After evaporation, the NTBs were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This work demonstrates the importance of the evaporation conditions in the formation of NTB and proposes mechanisms to explain the formation of NTB and LFN.

Abstract:Polished W discs exposed to pure He plasma in the PISCES-B linear-divertor-plasma simulator at 1120 and 1320 K are found to develop deeply nanostructured surface layers consisting of a conglomerate of amorphous ‘nanorods’. The growth of the thickness of the nanostructured layer is explored for exposure times spanning 300–(2.2 × 104) s in He plasmas of density ne ∼ 4 × 1018 m−3 and temperature Te ∼ 6–8 eV where the average He-ion surface-impact energy is ∼60 eV, below the threshold for physical sputtering. A nanostructured layer in excess of 5 µm thick is observed for the longest exposure time explored. The kinetics of the layer growth are found to follow Fick's law, characterized by an effective diffusive mechanism with coefficients of diffusion: D1120 K = 6.6 ± 0.4 × 10−12 cm2 s−1 and D1320 K = 2.0± 0.5 × 10−11 cm2 s−1. The diffusion of He atoms in W is considered too rapid to explain the observed growth of surface modification and points to the interplay of other mechanisms, such as the availability of thermal vacancies and/or the slower diffusion of He through the forming nanostructured layer.

Abstract:Tungsten-vanadium (W-V) alloys with 5 and 10 wt.% V made using hot-pressing sintering have been subjected to helium plasma at 1050 K with ion energy of 100 eV for one hour in a linear plasma generator STEP. The W-V alloys consist of three typical phase regions, i.e. the W-enriched region, the W-V solid solute region and the V-enriched region. Slight surface erosion on the W-V solid solute region and severe surface erosion on the V-enriched region are observed on the exposed surface. Sputtering during the He plasma loading contributed to the surface erosion in the W-V solid solute region and the V-enriched region. Slight sputtering on W-V solid solute region is expected given that the lighter alloying element increases the sputtering yield of the W-based material. Moreover, fuzz nanostructure formed on the surface of the W-V alloys under the applied irradiation conditions. The W-V solid solute region exhibits severe fuzz growth in comparison with the W-enriched region when exposed to He plasma, especially in the low flux area. The intense attraction interaction between He and substitutional V atoms aggravates the fuzz growth on the W-V solid solute region. Furthermore, the aggravation effect of V on fuzz nanostructure evolution is mitigated in the high flux area due to the enhanced preferential V sputtering.

Abstract:Helium irradiation on tungsten changes the surface morphology dramatically by forming a nanometre-sized fibreform structure which could bring about serious problems for fusion reactors. From the experimental results in liner divertor simulators, it is revealed that the incident ion energy and surface temperature are key parameters for the formation of the structure. It is shown that the tungsten nanostructure is easily formed when the temperature is in the range 1000–2000 K, and the incident ion energy is higher than 20 eV. Furthermore, on the basis of the helium irradiation experiments performed in the divertor simulator NAGDIS-I, the initial formation process of the nanostructure is revealed. It is shown that the nanostructure formation is related to pinholes appearing on the bulk part of the material, and then, the rough structure develops to a much finer nanostructure. The nanostructure was also observed on the molybdenum surface that was exposed to the helium plasma. It increases interest in the possibility that nanostructure formation by helium irradiation is a common phenomenon that occurs on various metals.

Abstract:Helium plasma irradiation on metal surfaces leads to the formation of metallic fuzzy nanostructures accompanied by the growth of helium bubbles in metals. The mechanism of the growth process, its impact for fusion devices, and potential application have been explored. Here we show enhanced growth of large-scale fuzz by precipitating additional metallic particles during helium plasma irradiation. The growth rate of the fuzzy structures became orders of magnitude greater than conventional fuzz growth; in an hour of irradiation, 1 mm-thick visible tungsten and molybdenum fuzzy fur structures covered a tungsten metal substrate. Additional precipitation of metallic ions breaks the bottleneck diffusion process; moreover, further acceleration in the growth rate could have occurred if the electric sheath shape was influenced by the grown structure and the electric field that formed around the structure started collecting ions.

Abstract:The He nanobubbles growth is one of the key factors in affecting surface microstructures of tungsten-based divertor targets. In this work, the growth of He bubbles in W nanofibers has been studied based on He diffusion and reaction rate model. Computational results show that the He bubbles tend to grow rapidly in vicinity of the axis of W nanofibers due to the diffusion and trapping of solute He atoms in W nanofibers while the nanobubbles in W bulk mainly grow in the near-surface layer. Decreasing the radius of W nanofibers and increasing He+ energy can significantly contribute to the growth of the He bubbles in vicinity of the axis of W nanofibers, which has been confirmed by our TEM measurements. The continuous growth of He bubbles in W nanofibers can not only lead to the tensile driven cracking but also the thinning of W nanofibers.

Morphologies of tungsten nanotendrils grown under helium exposure

Abstract:Nanotendril "fuzz" will grow under He bombardment under tokamak-relevant conditions on tungsten plasma-facing materials in a magnetic fusion energy device. We have grown tungsten nanotendrils at low (50 eV) and high (12 keV) He bombardment energy, in the range 900-1000 °C, and characterized them using electron microscopy. Low energy tendrils are finer (~22 nm diameter) than high-energy tendrils (~176 nm diameter), and low-energy tendrils have a smoother surface than high-energy tendrils. Cavities were omnipresent and typically ~5-10 nm in size. Oxygen was present at tendril surfaces, but tendrils were all BCC tungsten metal. Electron diffraction measured tendril growth axes and grain boundary angle/axis pairs; no preferential growth axes or angle/axis pairs were observed, and low-energy fuzz grain boundaries tended to be high angle; high energy tendril grain boundaries were not observed. We speculate that the strong tendency to high-angle grain boundaries in the low-energy tendrils implies that as the tendrils twist or bend, strain must accumulate until nucleation of a grain boundary is favorable compared to further lattice rotation. The high-energy tendrils consisted of very large (>100 nm) grains compared to the tendril size, so the nature of the high energy irradiation must enable faster growth with less lattice rotation.

Abstract:The microstructural evolution of W nanofibers has been observed during the W fuzz growth due to low-energy He + irradiations at an elevated temperature. In this study, we find that the frequent fracture and merging of W nanofibers occur during the W fuzz growth. Our annealing experiments also show the fracture and instability of W nanofibers at an elevated temperature. Detailed analysis reveals the tensile-stress driven thermodynamic instability of W nanofibers containing plenty of He bubbles at an elevated temperature. The mergence of W nanofibers coming into contact with each other is due to the deposition of W adatoms diffusing over W nanofibers onto the mergence locations, which decreases the surface free energy of W nanofibers. The fracture of W nanofibers is attributed to the tensile stress induced cracking of W nanofibers containing He bubbles, and the subsequent W adatom surface diffusion over W nanofibers.

Abstract:One of the most important changes of plasma-facing material is plasma-induced damage which limits the material lifetime in fusion reactors. In this study, the influence of exposure conditions on tungsten nano-structure formation and surface modification was investigated. TEM specimens and bulk samples were prepared and exposed to deuterium plasmas with different fluxes (4.0-10.0 x 10(21) D m(-2) s(-1)), fluences (2.5-10.0 x 10(25) D m(-2)) and temperatures (343-513 K), while ion energy was constant (60 eV). Distortion, nano-polycrystalline and amorphous structure were observed as irradiation damage. Increasing exposure intensity results in severer damage: (1) amorphous structure arises with increasing temperature; (2) deformation region greatly extends at a higher fluence; (3) degree of lattice distortion increases in high flux. Furthermore, surface morphology featured by blisters changes dramatically as well. Nanostructures and surface morphology observation indicates that nanostructure evolution is strongly related to surface modification, and it would influence the properties of tungsten. Abstract:Fuzz formation on a heated tungsten surface in the presence of helium-containing plasma and tungsten deposition source was investigated. Tungsten samples were exposed at 1123 K to pure helium plasma with ion incident energy of 76 eV, W/He ion flux ratio of ~0.4×10 -4 , and varied helium ion fluence from 0.18 to 3.4×10 26 m -2 . Fuzz thickness was measured by cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy to increase from 0.22 to 15 μm with increasing helium ion fluence. No indication of saturation in fuzz thickness at high fluence was observed, in contrast to fuzz produced on a tungsten surface without tungsten deposition. Additional tungsten samples were exposed at 1123 K to pure helium plasma with ion incident energy of 76 eV, helium ion fluence of ~3.4×10 26 m -2 , and varied W/He ion flux ratio from 0.26 to 3.0×10 -4 . Fuzz thickness increased from 7.5 to 120 μm with increasing W/He ratio. A final sample exposed at 1123 K to a mixed helium-deuterium plasma with ion incident energy of 76 eV, helium ion fluence of 0.18×10 26 m -2 , and W/He ion flux ratio of 2.2×10 -4 developed nearly identical fuzz structures to that developed in a pure He plasma. As a function of deposited tungsten fluence, all results were found to trace out a single layer-growth curve given by a power law relation, indicating that fuzz thickness is independent of the W/He ion flux ratio in the range investigated and independent of any deuterium present in the plasma. As a result, for tungsten plasma facing walls in magnetic fusion devices at 1000-2000 K with 10 -4 W/He ion flux ratio, fuzz with thicknesses greater than hundreds of microns may form in as little as 10 4 s (in the absence of ELM-induced erosion or annealing), and may more significantly affect its thermophysical properties than fuzz generated without a tungsten deposition source.

Abstract:Low energy, high flux He exposure of tungsten surface leads to the formation of surface nanostructures and severe morphology changes, which may eventually erode tungsten divertor and threaten the operation of the reactor. In this study, the response of polycrystalline W under low energy He+ irradiation at different temperatures has been investigated in order to analyze the early stage of nanostructure formation. It is found that the interactions of high-density over-pressured He bubbles result in the formation of surface stress layers. The significant effect of temperature on the surface stress leads to differences in the incubation dose of W fuzz growth. The interaction between the planar network and the underlying W matrix is weak under surface stress, and the W fuzz grows on the surface once the stress reaches a threshold. Thereafter, the tensile stress-driven cracking causes the three-dimensional growth of W nanofibers.

Abstract:Tungsten thin films were deposited onto silicon substrates using sputtering techniques, and helium plasma irradiation was performed in a linear plasma device. Observations of the surface and cross-sectional morphology revealed the presence of a corrugated fiberform nanostructure, referred to as corrugated nano-fuzz, on the irradiated silicon samples. This structure has a distinct pattern of ridges and valleys with nanofibers on the surface. In addition to its unique morphology, the corrugated nano-fuzz demonstrates remarkable optical absorptivity, as revealed by optical absorptivity measurements, even after being exposed to helium plasma even for a short duration. The utilization of silicon-substrate thin film holds the potential to not only accelerate the processing for nanostructure growth but also yield uniformly corrugated structures and high optical absorptivity. These findings offer valuable insights for advancing the development of efficient fabrication methods within the field of nanotechnology.

Abstract:Understanding the fuzz growth mechanism on tungsten (W) surface under the helium (He) particles irradiation is an important guide for structural design of the first wall materials. In this work, molecular dynamics simulation was used to explore the process of He bubble formation, growth and rupture under irradiation to understand the initial stage of fuzz nanostructure formation. It was found that He clusters had the most movable ability at the surface temperature around 800∼1800 K and thus big bubbles were favorable to be aggregated. We simulated the growth, rupture and merging of He bubbles to reproduce the process of protrusion's formation on the surface which induced the formation of fuzz nanostructure. It was found that the shallow bubble burst led to the pinhole in surface layer. The dislocation slip in the growth process of deep bubbles was the main factor for the configurations of protrusion on surface. It mainly pushes the W above He bubble along the directions, while the different surfaces have different relation with the directions. Thus, the different morphology of protrusion induced by the bubble appeared on different surfaces as observed in experiments.

Abstract:Synthesis of carbon nanowalls (CNWs) at atmospheric pressure is realized by using a negative normal glow discharge, which differs from prior low-pressure plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition methods for CNW growth and holds great potential for mass-production of CNWs. The glow discharge is characterized for electrical and optical properties. The resulting CNW structures are analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The CNW growth process is examined for effects of discharge regime, discharge duration (growth time), hydroxyl radicals (water vapor), and local current density. Possible CNW growth mechanism and critical process parameters to the CNW growth and evolution are identified. OH radicals play an essential role in the initial nucleation process, but excess OH radicals accelerate the oxidation of CNWs. For a fixed growth time, there exists an optimum feed gas relative humidity and an optimum current density (∼40% and ∼9.17A/m2, respectively, in the current work) for the growth of large and less defective CNWs with a high degree of crystallinity. Results obtained in this study can be used to tailor final properties of the as-grown CNWs for various applications.
He nanobubble driven W surface growth during low-energy He ion irradiations

Abstract:By using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, we observe the microscopic surface evolution of W crystals exposed to low-energy (50 eV) He+ irradiations at the temperature of 1050 K. We find that the He+ irradiation leads to the growth and emergence of nanoscale undulations over W (110), and the surface regions with less undulations are dominating the microscopic evolution of W crystals. Analysis shows that the thermodynamic instability of W crystals irradiated is attributed to the He nanobubble driven W surface growth, which has been confirmed by our experimental measurements and He reaction rate model in W. Our study will play a crucial role in understanding the growth process of undulating surface microstructures under fusion-relevant He+ irradiations.

Abstract:Abstract Based on a continuous-domain model, capable of accessing the spatiotemporal scales relevant to fuzz formation on the surface of plasma-facing component (PFC) tungsten, we report self-consistent simulation results that elucidate the effects of elastic softening and helium (He) accumulation kinetics on the surface morphological response of PFC tungsten. The model accounts for the softening of the elastic moduli in the near-surface region of PFC tungsten, including both thermal softening at high temperature and softening due to He accumulation upon He implantation. The dependence of the elastic moduli on the He content follows an exponential scaling relation predicted by molecular-dynamics simulations, while the He content in the near-surface region of PFC tungsten evolves according to a first-order saturation kinetics, consistent with experimental and simulation results reported in the literature. We establish that this elastic softening accelerates both nanotendril growth on the PFC surface and the onset of fuzz formation. We also explore the role of the rate of He accumulation to a saturation level in the near-surface region of irradiated tungsten in the onset of fuzz formation. For PFC tungsten surfaces such as W(110) where, under typical irradiation conditions, the characteristic time scale for stress-driven surface diffusion is comparable to the characteristic time scale for He accumulation, we find that accelerating the rate of He accumulation accelerates the growth rate of nanotendrils emanating from the surface. Additionally, we present a systematic parametric study of the PFC surface morphological response to explore its dependence on the He accumulation kinetics that is controlled by the irradiation conditions for low-energy implantation. Finally, we introduce an incubation time for nanotendril growth on the PFC surface, a concept equivalent to that of incubation fluence discussed in the literature, to predict and explain the minimum exposure time required to observe fuzz formation on PFC tungsten surfaces.

Abstract:Surface topography of polycrystalline tungsten (W) have been examined after exposure to a low-energy (38eV/D), high-flux (∼1.1–1.5×1024m−2s−1) deuterium plasma in the Pilot-PSI linear plasma device. The methods used were scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), positron annihilation Doppler broadening (PADB) and grazing incident X-ray diffraction (GI-XRD). After exposure to high flux D plasma, blisters and nanostructures are formed on the W surface. Generation of defects was evidenced by PADB, while high stress and mixture of phases were detected in depth of 50nm by GI-XRD. TEM observation revealed fluctuations and disordered microstructure on the outmost surface layer. Based on these results, surface reconstruction is considered as a possible mechanism for the formation of defects and nanostructures.

Abstract:Tungsten (W) is a potential candidate for plasma facing materials (PFMs) of fusion reactor. The helium (He) produced in fusion reaction is insoluble and easy to gather and form to He bubbles in W, resulting in embrittlement and degradation of the performance of the W matrix. In this paper, based on molecular dynamics, the nucleation and growth of helium bubbles in the bulk and at ∑3[211](110) and ∑9[110](411) grain boundaries of W was studied. As a result, the growth mechanism of Helium bubbles at grain boundary of W was different from in bulk. Helium bubbles in bulk W grow up by extruding dislocation rings. The growth mechanism of helium bubbles at ∑3[211](110) grain boundary was as follows: Firstly, a small amount of W interstitial atoms were extruded and emitted. And then the 1/2 \begin{document}$\left\langle {111} \right\rangle $\end{document} dislocation line was extruded. Finally, the 1/2 \begin{document}$\left\langle {111} \right\rangle $\end{document} dislocation line would migrate along the direction of [111] of the grain boundary interface. Moreover, the emission of W interstitial atoms and dislocation extrusion of the helium bubble were not observed in our simulated time scale at the ∑9[110](411) grain boundary. Then we used the NEB method to calculate the diffusion barrier of self-gap atoms in the bulk and at ∑3[211](110) and ∑9[110](411) grain boundaries of W, which explained the simulation results. The migration energy barrier of W self-gap atoms in the bulk and at ∑3[211](110) grain boundary was only a few to a few millielectron volts. So as long as W self-gap atoms dissociated from the surface of the He bubble in the thermal relaxation process, they can be easily migrated out. However, The migration energy of the W self-gap atom at the ∑9[110](411) grain boundary can be from a few tenths to a few electron volts. Even during the thermal relaxation process, the W self-gap atoms dissociated from the surface of the He bubble. It was difficult for the W self-gap atoms migrated out. Finally, the correlation between He bubble size and stress released was given. Either in bulk or at ∑3[211](110) and ∑9[110](411) grain boundaries of W, after the pressure of the helium bubble becomes stable with time, the radius of the helium bubble would increase rapidly whenever the pressure dropped sharply. So there was a small step on the curve of the evolution of the radius of the helium bubble with time. Thus, helium bubbles in W could promote growth by releasing pressure intermittently.
