Abstract:Zinc (Zn), one of the promising candidates for biodegradable implant materials, has excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study, as-cast Zn1FexMg (x <= 1.5 wt %) alloys were prepared to systematically explore the effects of magnesium (Mg) alloying on their microstructures, mechanical properties, and biodegradability. The microstructure of Zn1FexMg alloy consisted of Zn matrix, Zn + Mg2Zn11 eutectic structure, and FeZn13 phase. The addition of Mg not only promoted grain refinement of the alloy, but also improved its mechanical properties. The results of immersion tests showed that the addition of Mg accelerated microcell corrosion between different phases, and the modeling of the corrosion mechanism of alloys in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution was discussed to describe the interaction between different phases in the corrosion process. Zn1Fe1Mg possessed superior comprehensive mechanical properties and appropriate corrosion rate, and the values for hardness, tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and corrosion rate were 105 HB, 157 MPa, 146 MPa, 2.3%, and 0.027 mm/a, respectively, thus revealing that Zn1Fe1Mg is a preferred candidate for biodegradable implant material.

Abstract:There is an increasing interest in biodegradable materials, such as magnesium, for orthopedic implants. This is driven by their potential to address challenges like stress shielding and the need for secondary removal surgery. In this study, biodegradable magnesium alloys were produced using the Vacuum Induction Casting technique. The impact of micro-alloying Zn and Ca in Mg-xZn-0.2Ca (x= 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 wt%) alloys on corrosion resistance, cytocompatibility, and early-stage inflammatory response was investigated. XRD and SEM-EDS analysis confirmed the presence of Ca2Mg6Zn3 secondary phases in all alloys. The Mg-0.3Zn-0.2Ca alloy exhibited the lowest corrosion rate and an elastic modulus of 33.7 GPa, resembling that of natural bone. Electrochemical measurements indicated a correlation between grain size and secondary phase volume fraction in explaining corrosion behaviour. In vitro degradation in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 21 days showed hydroxyapatite formation on alloy surfaces, aligning with electrochemical studies. In vitro cytotoxicity tests demonstrated the cytocompatibility of all alloys, with Mg-0.3Zn-0.2Ca having the highest cell viability over a 6-day cell culture. Investigation into the inflammatory response with RAW-Blue macrophages revealed the anti-inflammatory properties of Mg-0.3Zn-0.2Ca alloys. Micro-alloying with 0.3 wt% Zn and 0.2 wt% Ca enhanced mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, cytocompatibility, and immunomodulatory properties. This positions the Mg-0.3Zn-0.2Ca alloy as a promising biodegradable implant for bone fixation applications.

Abstract:Biodegradable metallic materials represent a new class of biocompatible materials for medical applications based on numerous advantages. Among them, those based on zinc have a rate of degradation close to the healing period required by many clinical problems, which makes them more suitable than those based on magnesium or iron. The poor mechanical properties of Zn could be significantly improved by the addition of Mg and Y. In this research, we analyze the electro-chemical and mechanical behavior of a new alloy based on Zn3Mg0.7Y compared with pure Zn and Zn3Mg materials. Microstructure and chemical composition were investigated by electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The electrochemical corrosion was analyzed by linear polarization (LP), cyclic polarization (CP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). For hardness and scratch resistance, a microhardness tester and a scratch module were used. Findings revealed that the mechanical properties of Zn improved through the addition of Mg and Y. Zn, Zn-Mg and Zn-Mg-Y alloys in this study showed highly active behavior in SBF with uniform corrosion. Zinc metals and their alloys with magnesium and yttrium showed a moderate degradation rate and can be considered as promising biodegradable materials for orthopedic application.
Fingolimod: A Novel Immunosuppressant for Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract:Objective: To review the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and safety of fingolimod, a novel immune modulator. Data Sources: Information was obtained through a MEDLINE search (1966–February 2007) and from published abstracts. Search terms included fingolimod, FTY720, FTY-720, and sphlngosine-1-phosphate receptor agonist. Study Selection and Data Extraction: All English-language studies and abstracts pertaining to fingolimod were considered for inclusion. Preference was given to human data. Data Synthesis: Fingolimod Is the first in a new class of immune modulators known as the sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor agonists. It is administered orally once dairy and causes a dose-related reduction in the number ot circulating lymphocytes by preventing their egress from secondary lymph organs, but it does not alter T-cell activation or proliferation. Bradycardia and lymphopenia are the most common adverse effects. Clinical trials have evaluated the efficacy of fingolimod in renal transplantation and multiple sclerosis (MS). Further research for renal transplantation will not take place, but Phase 3 studies in MS are underway, as Phase 2 study results are favorable. Conclusions: Due to its distinct mechanism of action and its oral administration, fingolimod may be a useful therapeutic option for patients with relapsing forms of MS. More data are needed to assess the safety and clinical utility of fingolimod.

Abstract:Both magnesium and zinc are considered as suitable elements for preparation of biodegradable materials that can be gradually dissolved in human organism without the production of toxic compounds. Although many magnesium-based materials possess good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, corrosion rates accompanied by hydrogen release and pH increase are too high. On the contrary, Zn is characterized by much lower corrosion rate in physiological solution compared to magnesium and its alloys. Therefore, we study Zn-Mg binary alloys with 0-7 wt.% of Mg. In this case, magnesium was selected to improve mechanical properties and biocompatibility of pure Zn. The structures of alloys were studied by an optical metallographic microscope and SEM equipped with EDS analyzer. Mechanical properties were studied using Vickers hardness measurements. Our results showed that mechanical properties of binary Mg-Zn alloys improve with increasing content of Mg, achieving the maximum at eutectic composition. Higher Mg concentrations strongly deteriorate mechanical properties of binary Mg-Zn alloys.

Abstract:We demonstrate that dissociative ionization of O2 can be controlled by the relative delay between an attosecond pulse train (APT) and a copropagating infrared (IR) field. Our experiments reveal a dependence of both the branching ratios between a range of electronic states and the fragment angular distributions on the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) to IR time delay. The observations go beyond adiabatic propagation of dissociative wave packets on IR-induced quasistatic potential energy curves and are understood in terms of an IR-induced coupling between electronic states in the molecular ion.

Abstract:The influence of alloying elements, grain size and orientation on biocorrosion resistance of Mg-2.1Nd-0.2Zn-0.5Zr (wt.%) were studied by immersion, electrochemical and quasi-in-situ electron back-scattering diffraction tests, to give a better microstructure design. The corrosion rate of this alloy is lower than that of pure Mg due to the smaller grain size and the presence of alloying elements in the corrosion layer. Preparation of samples with an average grain size smaller than 10 μm and weakening basal texture was recommended. These results are useful for uncovering the corrosion behavior of JDBM alloys and pure Mg, and designing microstructures for biodegradable implants.

Abstract:The rapid degradation of magnesium (Mg)-based implants in physiological environment limits its clinical applications, and alloying treatment is an effective way to regulate the degradation rate of Mg-based materials. In the present study, three Mg alloys, including Mg-0.8Ca (denoted as ZQ), Mg-0.8Ca-5Zn-1.5Ag (denoted as ZQ71) and Mg-0.8Ca-5Zn-2.5Ag (denoted as ZQ63), were fabricated by alloying with calcium (Ca), zinc (Zn) and silver (Ag). The results obtained from electrochemical corrosion tests and in vitro degradation evaluation demonstrated that the three Mg alloys exhibited distinct corrosion resistance, and ZQ71 exhibited the lowest degradation rate in vitro among them. After addition of Zn and Ag, the antibacterial potential of Mg alloys was also enhanced. The in vitro cell experiments showed that all the three Mg alloys had good biocompatibility. After implantation in a rat femoral defect, ZQ71 showed significantly higher osteogenic activity and bone substitution rate than ZQ63 and ZQ, due to its higher corrosion resistance as well as the stimulatory effects of the released metallic ions. In addition, the average daily degradation rate of each Mg alloy in vivo was significantly higher than that in vitro, as could be due to the implantation site located in the highly vascularized trabecular region. Importantly, the correlations between the in vitro and in vivo degradation parameters of the Mg alloys were systematically analyzed to find out the potential predictors of the in vivo degradation performance of the materials. The current work not only evaluated the clinical potential of the three biodegradable Mg alloys as bone grafts but also provided a feasible approach for predicting the in vivo degradation behavior of biodegradable materials.

Abstract:Zinc (Zn)-based alloys have been investigated as one kind of promising degradable metallic biomaterials. Nevertheless, the mechanical and corrosion properties of Zn alloys still need to be improved to meet the demands of biodegradable implants. In this study, Zn1Mg alloy (1 wt%) was studied as the base alloy with adding varied amounts of zirconium (Zr), and both casting and extrusion were employed to treat the developed alloys. The results revealed that the addition of Zr refined the microstructure of Zn1Mg, which consisted of Zn primary dendrite, eutectic mixtures of Zn and Mg2Zn11, and a new formed particle precipitation (Zn22Zr). The finer microstructure accordingly improved the mechanical properties and the corrosion resistance of the alloys. Although the effect of Zr on the mechanical properties was largely minimized by extrusion process, Zr further enhanced the corrosion resistance and led to more uniform corrosion for the extruded alloys.

Abstract:In recent years, Zn-0.5 wt.%Mg alloys have drawn a lot of attention as a potential candidate in biodegradable implant applications as it demonstrated more corrosion resistant property in comparison to Fe- and Mg-based alloys. Zn-0.5 wt%Mg based alloys were fabricated through powder metallurgy. This work examined the impact of the micro-alloying metals Cu, Fe, and Ag on Zn-Mg alloys. Moreover, the structure, absorbing properties, morphology, electrochemical properties, electrical properties, and wettability were also investigated. All fabricated Zn-0.5 wt%Mg alloys formed a primary phase of Mg 2 Zn 11 and secondary phase of MgZn 2 . A minor phase of Zn was also identified in XRD analysis. Optical analysis showed that the Zn-0.5 wt.%Mg-0.2 wt.%Cu alloy gave a strong peak of absorbance at a short wavelength of 230 nm which is due to its colour. All alloys sintered at 350 ◦C displayed micro-needles having size in the range of 1.82-26.2 μm in SEM analysis. Zn-0.5 wt.% Mg-0.2 wt.% Cu alloy offered 140 Hv value of Vickers hardness. The electrochemical test findings measured corrosion resistance and most corrosion resistant material was Zn-0.5 wt.%Mg-0.2 wt.%Cu alloy with corrosion rate 0.0120 mm/year. Zn-0.5 wt%Mg-0.2 wt%Cu offered the conductivity with the least value of 7.45 ×10 -12 Ω -1 m -1 and highest value of resistivity at 1.335 ×10 11 Ω-m, based on electrochemical study. All fabricated biodegradable Zn-0.5 wt.%Mg alloys had an angle less than 90, indicating hydrophilicity as determined by wettability studies. Zn-0.5 wt.%Mg-0.2 wt.%Cu is the most suitable alloy in cardiovascular stent and orthopaedic implant applications.

Abstract:Due to its excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, Mg has received widespread attention in biomaterials as implants and even bio-batteries. However, the poor corrosion resistance makes it difficult to meet the growing demand for implant materials. This study developed a biodegradable nano-heterogeneous Mg(48 wt%)Zn(52 wt%)-based metal (NHMZ) comprising nanocrystalline matrix phase Mg51Zn20 and nanoscale MgZn2 precipitates. The unique microstructure of NHMZ enhances its corrosion resistance. The spherical aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope (AC-TEM) and precession electron diffraction (PED) characterized the microstructures. The corrosion rate of NHMZ is about 0.21 mm y−1 after soaking for 4 weeks, approximately 58 % of high pure Mg. In addition, the anode discharge of NHMZ is more stable than Mg, indicating it has great potential in biological batteries. This work hopes to broaden the development direction of biodegradable metallic materials and break through the performance limitation of current biodegradable Mg alloys.

Abstract:Magnesium–zinc alloy is a potential base material for biodegradable implant applications. In this study, the influence of zinc content (0.5–3 wt.%) in as-cast magnesium–zinc binary alloys towards the microstructure, mechanical properties and in vitro corrosion behaviour was studied. Increase in zinc content reduced the grain size of magnesium–zinc alloy. Mechanical properties such as yield strength, tensile strength and hardness improved with increase in zinc content. Potentiodynamic polarization results suggest that increase in zinc content enhanced the in vitro corrosion resistance of the alloy, which could be attributed to the combined effect of grain size refinement and even distribution of zinc on the alloy surface resulting in better passive film formation.

Abstract:In order to prepare a new biodegradable magnesium alloy with high biosafety, better mechanical properties, and lower degradation rate, in this paper, the effect of the non-toxic element Sn (0%~2%, mass%) on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of the Mg-1.0Zn-0.3Zr alloy was investigated using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, tensile testing, and corrosion experiments. The results indicated that the addition of Sn to the alloy resulted in the formation of the Mg2Sn phase, which improved the mechanical properties of the alloy. However, a higher concentration of this phase and its continuous distribution along the grain boundaries decreased the alloy's corrosion resistance. The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the alloy exhibited an increasing trend with the increase of Sn content, followed by a decreasing trend. At an Sn content of 1%, the alloy demonstrated better mechanical properties and corrosion resistance simultaneously. The yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation of the alloy were 114±2 MPa, 164±5 MPa, and 13.3±0.1%, respectively. Additionally, the corrosion rate of the alloy was only 0.61 mm/y after being immersed in simulated body fluids for 120 h. These properties represent a significant improvement over those of the Mg-1.0Zn-0.3Zr alloy. Our results indicate that the addition of an appropriate amount of Sn element can improve both the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the alloy, supporting the development of new biodegradable magnesium alloys.

Abstract:Magnesium-based multicomponent alloys with different compositions, namely Mg60Al20Zn5Cu10Mn5 (Mg60 alloy), Mg70Al15Zn5Cu5Mn5 (Mg70 alloy), and Mg80Al5Cu5Mn5Zn5 (Mg 80) alloys, were prepared using the disintegrated melt deposition technique. The DMD technique is a distinctive method that merges the benefits from gravity die casting and spray forming. This approach facilitates high solidification rates, process yields, and reduced metal wastage, resulting in materials with a fine microstructure and minimal porosity. Their potential as biodegradable materials was assessed through corrosion in different simulated body fluids (SBFs), microstructure, and cytotoxicity tests. It was observed that the Mg60 alloy exhibited low corrosion rates (~× 10-5 mm/year) in all SBF solutions, with a minor amount of corrosive products, and cracks were observed. This can be attributed to the formation of the Mg32(AlZn)49 phase and to its stability due to Mg(OH)2 film, leading to excellent corrosion resistance when compared to the Mg70 and M80 alloys. Conversely, the Mg80 alloy exhibited high corrosion rates, along with more surface degradation and cracks, due to active intermetallic phases, such as Al6Mn, Al2CuMg, and Al2Cu phases. The order of corrosion resistance for the Mg alloy was found to be ASS > HBSS > ABP > PBS. Further, in vitro cytotoxicity studies were carried out using MDA-MB-231 tumor cells. By comparing all three alloys, in terms of proliferation and vitality, the Mg80 alloy emerged as a promising material for implants, with potential antitumor activity.

Abstract:Magnesium and its alloys have attracting rising attention as one of biodegradable metallic materials. However, the rapid corrosion and severe localized corrosion still hinder their extensive applications in clinics. In this study, micro-alloying of Ca (≤ 0.1 wt%) into Mg0.5Zn0.2Ge alloy developed in our previous work was explored to further enhance the corrosion resistance and alleviate the localized corrosion of the alloy. The results reveal that the addition of Ca leads to the transformation of the cathodic Mg 2 Ge phase in Mg0.5Zn0.2Ca alloy into anodic MgCaGe phase in Ca-containing alloys, thereby changing the galvanic couples in alloys during immersion. The preferential dissolution of MgCaGe phase promotes the participation of Ca and Ge into the formation of corrosion products, resulting in the enrichment of Ca and Ge in the outmost of corrosion product layer, which stabilizes and passivates the corrosion product layer on Mg alloy surface. Additionally, the enrichment of Zn at the corrosion interface seems to further hinder the corrosion of Mg matrix. All of these factors confer a slower and more uniform corrosion on Mg0.5Zn0.2Ge x Ca ( x < 0.1 wt%) alloy, which provides favorable candidates for the further processing to gain suitable biodegradable Mg alloys.

Abstract:The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of biodegradable Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloys were investigated by the optical microscopy, X-ray diffractometer and a universal material testing machine.The corrosion and degradation behaviors were studied by potentiodynamic polarization method and immersion test in a simulated body fluid（SBF）. It was found that the as-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloy has the fine equiaxed grains which underwent complete dynamic recrystallization during the hot extrusion process, with the second phase particles of Mg 2 Sn precipitated on the grain boundaries and inside the grains. The tensile strength and elongation of as-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloys were 244 ± 3.7 MPa and 19.3% ± 1.7%, respectively. The potentiodynamic polarization curves in SBF solution indicated the better corrosion resistance of the as-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloy in the SBF solution. Immersion test in the SBF solution for 720 h revealed that the corrosion rate of as-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloy was nearly 4 ± 0.33 mm/year. The hemolysis rate of as-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloy was lower than the safe value of 5% according to ISO 10993-4. As-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloy showed good biocompatibility after being implanted into the dorsal muscle and the femoral shaft of the rabbit, and no abnormalities were found after short-term implantation. It was revealed that the as-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloy is a promising material for biodegradable implants,which possesses an interesting combination of preferred mechanical properties, better corrosion resistance and biocompatibility.

Abstract:The effect of nano-CaO content on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and in vitro degradation performance of extruded Mg-1Zn alloys was investigated to enhance the strength and corrosion resistance of biodegradable materials for medical implants. The results showed that the addition of CaO nanoparticles effectively refined the size of dynamic recrystallization grains in the extruded composites. During the extrusion process, Ca 2 Mg 6 Zn 3 and Mg 2 Ca phases precipitated in the Mg-1Zn-0.5CaO and Mg-1Zn-1CaO composites, respectively. As the CaO content increased, the basal texture strength was elevated from 3.97 for the Mg-1Zn alloy to 12.05 for the Mg-1Zn-1CaO composite. Benefiting from the combined mechanisms of grain refinement, dislocation strengthening, and precipitation strengthening, the yield strength of the materials was fortified with an increase in CaO content. During the short immersion time, the matrix of the extruded Mg-1Zn-0.5CaO composite was preferentially corroded, resulting in the formation of a dense corrosion product layer that impeded the transport of ions in the electrolyte solution, thereby exhibiting the lowest annual corrosion rate. With an increase in the immersion time, galvanic corrosion destroyed the protective film, leading to a slightly higher corrosion rate in the extruded Mg-1Zn-0.5CaO composite compared to the Mg-1Zn alloy. The substantial nano-Mg 2 Ca phase particles were preferentially degraded, causing severe pitting corrosion in the extruded Mg-1Zn-1CaO composite, which exhibited the highest degradation rate. The extruded Mg-1Zn-0.5CaO composite exhibited superior overall properties; its yield strength, elongation, and annual corrosion rate after immersion (21 d) were 334.9 MPa, 8.9 %, and 1.06 mm/y, respectively.

Abstract:Magnesium alloys have raised an immense amount of interest to many researchers because of their evolution as a new kind of third generation materials. Due to their biocompatibility, density, and mechanical properties, magnesium alloys are frequently reported as prospective biodegradable implant materials. Moreover, magnesium alloys experience a natural phenomenon to biodegrade in aqueous solutions due to its corrosion activity, which is excellent for orthopedic and cardiovascular applications. However, a major concern with such alloys is fast and non-uniform corrosion degradation. Controlling the degradation rate in the physiological environment determines the success of biodegradable implants. In this investigation, three different grades of magnesium alloys: AZ31B, AZ91E and ZK60A were studied for their corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and contact angle meter are used to study surface morphology, chemistry, roughness and wettability, respectively. Additionally, the cytotoxicity of the leached metal ions was evaluated by using a tetrazolium based bio-assay, MTS.
