Abstract:The microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behavior of as-cast Mg-10Gd-3Y-xZn-0.6Zr (x = 0, 0.5, 1 and 2 wt%) alloys have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tensile tests. The experimental results reveal that the microstructure of the alloy without Zn contains α-Mg and Mg24(Gd,Y)5 phase, the microstructure of the alloy with 0.5% Zn contained of α-Mg, (Mg,Zn)3(Gd,Y) and Mg24(Gd,Y,Zn)5 phase, whereas when Zn content was 1% and 2%, the Mg12(Gd,Y)Zn phase and some needle-shaped stacking faults notably appear and the Mg24(Gd,Y,Zn)5 phases completely disappear. Moreover, a new 18R long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase is observed in grain boundaries with increasing Zn content up to 2%. The tensile tests indicate that the alloy containing 0.5% Zn shows the optimal mechanical properties and the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS) and elongation are 228MPa, 172MPa and 5.1%, respectively. As indicated by fracture analyses, the fracture modes of the alloys with 0%, 1% and 2% Zn are brittleness transcrystalline fracture, and the tensile fracture mode of 0.5% Zn alloy is typical tough transgranular fracture.

Abstract:Both magnesium and zinc are considered as suitable elements for preparation of biodegradable materials that can be gradually dissolved in human organism without the production of toxic compounds. Although many magnesium-based materials possess good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, corrosion rates accompanied by hydrogen release and pH increase are too high. On the contrary, Zn is characterized by much lower corrosion rate in physiological solution compared to magnesium and its alloys. Therefore, we study Zn-Mg binary alloys with 0-7 wt.% of Mg. In this case, magnesium was selected to improve mechanical properties and biocompatibility of pure Zn. The structures of alloys were studied by an optical metallographic microscope and SEM equipped with EDS analyzer. Mechanical properties were studied using Vickers hardness measurements. Our results showed that mechanical properties of binary Mg-Zn alloys improve with increasing content of Mg, achieving the maximum at eutectic composition. Higher Mg concentrations strongly deteriorate mechanical properties of binary Mg-Zn alloys.

Abstract:Objective: To review the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and safety of fingolimod, a novel immune modulator. Data Sources: Information was obtained through a MEDLINE search (1966–February 2007) and from published abstracts. Search terms included fingolimod, FTY720, FTY-720, and sphlngosine-1-phosphate receptor agonist. Study Selection and Data Extraction: All English-language studies and abstracts pertaining to fingolimod were considered for inclusion. Preference was given to human data. Data Synthesis: Fingolimod Is the first in a new class of immune modulators known as the sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor agonists. It is administered orally once dairy and causes a dose-related reduction in the number ot circulating lymphocytes by preventing their egress from secondary lymph organs, but it does not alter T-cell activation or proliferation. Bradycardia and lymphopenia are the most common adverse effects. Clinical trials have evaluated the efficacy of fingolimod in renal transplantation and multiple sclerosis (MS). Further research for renal transplantation will not take place, but Phase 3 studies in MS are underway, as Phase 2 study results are favorable. Conclusions: Due to its distinct mechanism of action and its oral administration, fingolimod may be a useful therapeutic option for patients with relapsing forms of MS. More data are needed to assess the safety and clinical utility of fingolimod.

Abstract:The corrosion mechanisms of a high-anticorrosive Mg-Zn-Gd alloy have been unveiled. Numerous particles were observed and identified as anodic W phase. Nevertheless, due to a small potential difference between the secondary phase and Mg matrix, and the nanoscale size and dispersed distribution of the particles, no serious pitting would occur. The segregation of Zn in the MgO layer was found to be favorable for the compactness of the whole corrosion layer. The preferential corrosion of W phase should be partly responsible for this segregation. A new method has been presented to develop Mg alloys with high corrosion resistance by alloying.

Abstract:The microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance to simulated body fluid solution behavior of as-extruded Mg-1.8Zn-0.5Zr alloys with different Gd additions are investigated. It is found that dynamic recrystallization occurs in the alloys during extrusion and the grain size gradually decreases with Gd alloying. The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance to simulated body fluid of the investigated alloys enhance firstly and then weaken with the increase in Gd content. The results reveal that the Mg-1.8Zn-0.5Zr with a 1.5 wt.% Gd addition has optimized mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. A three-stage corrosion mechanism, including sequential stages from hydroxidation, phosphatization and hydroxidation, to formation-dissolution dynamic equilibrium, is proposed through electrochemical measurements and corroded surface analyses. This study reveals the extruded Mg-1.8Zn-0.5Zr-1.5Gd alloy can be regarded as a potential candidate for using as biodegradable magnesium implants.

Abstract:Rare earth (RE) elements have large solid solubility in magnesium and are widely used to regulate the microstructure and property of advanced magnesium alloys. However, different kinds of RE elements have different effects on microstructure and property of the alloy. In this study, a Mg–Zn–Y alloy and a Mg–Zn–Gd alloy with alloying elements of the same atomic percentage were designed to clarify the effect of yttrium (Y) and gadolinium (Gd) on the corrosion behavior of as-cast MgZn 2 Y 2.66 and MgZn 2 Gd 2.66 alloys. The results show that the MgZn 2 Y 2.66 alloy is mainly composed of α-Mg phase and long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase, while MgZn 2 Gd 2.66 alloy is mainly composed of α-Mg phase and (Mg, Gd) 3 Zn phase (W phase). Generally speaking, the corrosion phenomena of the two alloys in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution are similar. In the early stages of exposure, the alloys underwent uniform corrosion at a relatively low corrosion rate. With prolonged exposure, localized corrosion became dominated and the corrosion rate was greatly increased. However, the corrosion rate of the MgZn 2 Y 2.66 alloy, in terms of the corrosion current density, is about one order of magnitude lower than that of the MgZn 2 Gd 2.66 alloy. The high corrosion resistance of the MgZn 2 Y 2.66 alloy is mainly attributed to the presence of LPSO phase in form of continuous networks and the relatively high corrosion resistance of the corrosion product layer on the alloy.

ZN-BASED ALLOYS AS AN ALTERNATIVE BIODEGRADABLE MATERIALS

Abstract:Zinc like magnesium has important role in many biological processes in human organism. However, recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for zinc is 15-40 mg per day which is much lower in comparison with 300-400 mg for magnesium. For this reason biodegradable materials based on Zn should be characterized by lower corrosion rate in comparison with magnesium materials. Sufficient mechanical properties especially high strength and medium ductility are required. Poor mechanical properties of pure zinc can be increased by alloying with other elements. In this research magnesium was used as alloying element due to its beneficial effect on bone growth. Binary zinc alloys that contained from 0.5 to 3 wt. % of magnesium were prepared. Mechanical properties of studied alloys in the cast state were determined and compared to pure Mg and Zn. Moreover, corrosion behaviour in physiological NaCl solution and simulated body fluid (SBF) solution was studied by immersion tests and potentiodynamic measurements. Maximum strength of 150 MPa was achieved in the case of Zn-1Mg (wt. %) binary alloy. Corrosion rates of Zn-Mg alloys were determined to be significantly lower than that of pure Mg. Both mechanical and corrosion properties are discussed in relation to the structural features of the alloys.

Abstract:Mg-Zn-Zr alloys were studied as a promising biomaterial in terms of their excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties. Cast Mg-Zn-Zr alloys with different compositions were immersed in Hank's solution at 37 degrees C to investigate the effect of Zn content on the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion behavior. The microstructure observation showed the alloys were mainly composed of primary alpha-Mg matrix and a small amount of MgZn second phase. Mechanical tests showed that Mg-3Zn-0.6Zr alloy had optimum mechanical properties with the tensile strength of 219 MPa, yield strength of 65 MPa, elongation of 21% and hardness of 46 HV. The corrosion morphologies and immersion test proved that Mg-2Zn-0.6Zr alloy exhibited best corrosion resistance with an average corrosion rate of 1.68 mm/year.

Abstract:Microstructure, mechanical and corrosion properties of as-cast pure zinc and its binary and ternary alloys with magnesium (Mg), and copper (Cu) additions were investigated. Analysis of microstructure conducted by scanning electron microscopy revealed that alloying additives contributed to decreasing average grain size compared to pure zinc. Corrosion rate was calculated based on immersion and potentiodynamic tests and its value was lower for materials with Cu content. Moreover, it was shown that the intermetallic phase, formed as a result of Mg addition, constitutes a specific place for corrosion. It was observed that a different type of strengthening was obtained depending on the additive used. The presence of the second phase with Mg improved the tensile strength of the Zn-based materials, while Cu dissolved in the solution had a positive effect on their elongation.

Abstract:The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of biodegradable Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloys were investigated by the optical microscopy, X-ray diffractometer and a universal material testing machine.The corrosion and degradation behaviors were studied by potentiodynamic polarization method and immersion test in a simulated body fluid（SBF）. It was found that the as-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloy has the fine equiaxed grains which underwent complete dynamic recrystallization during the hot extrusion process, with the second phase particles of Mg 2 Sn precipitated on the grain boundaries and inside the grains. The tensile strength and elongation of as-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloys were 244 ± 3.7 MPa and 19.3% ± 1.7%, respectively. The potentiodynamic polarization curves in SBF solution indicated the better corrosion resistance of the as-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloy in the SBF solution. Immersion test in the SBF solution for 720 h revealed that the corrosion rate of as-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloy was nearly 4 ± 0.33 mm/year. The hemolysis rate of as-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloy was lower than the safe value of 5% according to ISO 10993-4. As-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloy showed good biocompatibility after being implanted into the dorsal muscle and the femoral shaft of the rabbit, and no abnormalities were found after short-term implantation. It was revealed that the as-extruded Mg–3Sn–1Zn–0.5Mn alloy is a promising material for biodegradable implants,which possesses an interesting combination of preferred mechanical properties, better corrosion resistance and biocompatibility.

Abstract:The influence of alloying elements, grain size and orientation on biocorrosion resistance of Mg-2.1Nd-0.2Zn-0.5Zr (wt.%) were studied by immersion, electrochemical and quasi-in-situ electron back-scattering diffraction tests, to give a better microstructure design. The corrosion rate of this alloy is lower than that of pure Mg due to the smaller grain size and the presence of alloying elements in the corrosion layer. Preparation of samples with an average grain size smaller than 10 μm and weakening basal texture was recommended. These results are useful for uncovering the corrosion behavior of JDBM alloys and pure Mg, and designing microstructures for biodegradable implants.

Abstract:Effects of Gd addition on microstructure, corrosion behavior and mechanism of cast and extruded MgZn1.2Gd x Zr0.18 alloys are investigated through microstructure observation, weight loss and electrochemical tests. Increasing Gd from 0 to 2.0 at.%, grains are refined, MgZn2 phase, W-phase and X-phase are formed successively, and basal texture intensity is decreased. The significantly decreased grain size by extrusion and Gd addition induces formation of protective Gd2O3 and MgO layer. The extruded MgZn1.2Gd2.0Zr0.18 alloy shows decreased corrosion rate of 3.72 ± 0.36 mm/year, owing to fine and homogeneous microstructure, dual-role (micro-anode and barrier) of X-phase, compact oxidation layer and basal crystallographic texture.

Gd Added Mg Alloy for Biodegradable Implant Applications

Abstract:Microstructure, mechanical, in vitro and in vivo behavior of extruded Mg alloys with varying Zn/Gd ratios, Mg-2Gd-2Zn-0.5Zr (Zn/Gd = 1), Mg-2Gd-6Zn-0.5Zr (Zn/Gd = 3), and Mg-10Gd-1Zn-0.5Zr (Zn/Gd = 0.1) were investigated. The results revealed that the major secondary phases such as W (Mg3Zn3Gd2), (Mg,Zn)3Gd, LPSO (Long period stacking order) and I (Mg3Zn6Gd) phase in alloys depended on Zn/Gd ratio. These second phases influenced the mechanical as well as biological characteristics of the alloys. Among studied alloys, Mg-10Gd-1Zn-0.5Zr alloy showed the highest yield strength and tensile strength of 270 (±9.29) and 330 MPa (±15.8), respectively, with a reasonably good elongation of 12% (±2.36). The presence of Gd2O3 in the degradation film of Mg-10Gd-1Zn-0.5Zr enhanced the resistance offered by the film, which resulted in its lowest biodegradation, better viability, and cell proliferation under in vitro condition. The short term (subcutaneous implantation in rats for 1 month) in vivo studies showed that the alloy Mg-10Gd-1Zn-0.5Zr degraded at a rate of 0.35 mm/y (±0.02) and did not induce any toxicity to the vital organs.

Abstract:In this study, Mg-Zn alloys (1-4 wt.% Zn) were fabricated with high-purity raw materials using a clean melting process (fluxless method) and a protective atmosphere of CO2 + 0.4 SF6. The as-cast microstructures of the investigated alloys were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopes, EDS and XRD. Corrosion properties of the prepared alloys were examined in simulated body fluid by electrochemical techniques and immersion test (hydrogen evolution method). Surface modification of the prepared alloys was performed using micro-arc oxidation (MAO) treatment and hydroxyapatite (HA) coating. Microstructure observation revealed that Zn was completely dissolved in the α-Mg matrix up to 2 wt.%. Higher Zn content led to a reduction in the grain size and the development of a second phase (MgZn2). Corrosion testing results revealed that Mg-1,2,3 wt.% Zn have almost the same degradation rate, whereas Mg-4Zn has the highest degradation rate. HA coating on MAO-treated magnesium alloys formed a dense and compact layer on the alloy surface, which had largely improved surface properties and enhanced corrosion resistance of the prepared alloys.

Abstract:Rare earth elements are known to improve both mechanical and corrosion properties. However, it highly depends on the final microstructure conditions of prepared material. During extrusion, intermetallic phases may be redistributed, partially dissolved or on the contrary, precipitated. The knowledge of the impact of extrusion on the individual alloys is therefore essential for their application. In this work, three magnesium alloys (Mg-4Y-3RE, Mg-2Y-1Zn, Mg-3Nd-0.5Zn) were prepared by an extrusion process. Microstructure, mechanical and corrosion properties were compared with extruded pure Mg. The advantages and disadvantages of individual alloys are discussed. Based on the obtained results, the Mg-4Y-3RE alloy seems to exert the best mechanical and corrosion properties. Other materials were characterised with anisotropy of mechanical properties and much higher corrosion rate.

Abstract:Zinc (Zn), one of the promising candidates for biodegradable implant materials, has excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study, as-cast Zn1FexMg (x <= 1.5 wt %) alloys were prepared to systematically explore the effects of magnesium (Mg) alloying on their microstructures, mechanical properties, and biodegradability. The microstructure of Zn1FexMg alloy consisted of Zn matrix, Zn + Mg2Zn11 eutectic structure, and FeZn13 phase. The addition of Mg not only promoted grain refinement of the alloy, but also improved its mechanical properties. The results of immersion tests showed that the addition of Mg accelerated microcell corrosion between different phases, and the modeling of the corrosion mechanism of alloys in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution was discussed to describe the interaction between different phases in the corrosion process. Zn1Fe1Mg possessed superior comprehensive mechanical properties and appropriate corrosion rate, and the values for hardness, tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and corrosion rate were 105 HB, 157 MPa, 146 MPa, 2.3%, and 0.027 mm/a, respectively, thus revealing that Zn1Fe1Mg is a preferred candidate for biodegradable implant material.

Abstract:The object of this study is to investigate the influence of extrusion temperature on the microstructure, mechanical properties and in vitro corrosion behavior of Mg–2Zn–1Gd–0.4Mn–0.1Sr (ZGMS) alloy. The results show that as–extruded ZMGS alloy mainly contains α–Mg and Mg3Zn3Gd2 (W) phases, and the W phase is uniformly distributed in the Mg matrix. With decreasing extrusion temperature, the grain size is refined, and numerous nano–sized W particles dynamically precipitate during extrusion process. The mechanical properties of as–extruded experimental alloy is significantly improved with decreased extrusion temperature.This is owing to the effects of grain boundary strengthening, precipitation strengthening and dislocation strengthening. The experimental alloy exhibits the lowest corrosion rate and relatively uniform corrosion after extrusion at 360 °C. The corrosion products layer are mainly composed of Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, Ca3(PO4)2 Mg(OH)2 and MgHPO4. The as–extruded alloy owns excellent mechanical properties (yield strength of 206.3 MPa ultimate tensile strength of 261.1 MPa and elongation of 27.3%) and corrosion rate (0.17 mg/cm2/day) after extruded at 360 °C. The alloy presents tremendous potential in degradable implant applications. Additionally, the relationship between microstructure and corrosion behavior was systematically discussed.

Abstract:Microstructures and mechanical properties of the peak-aged Mg–4.5Zn–xGd (x=0, 2, 3 and 5wt.%) alloys have been investigated. The results showed that grain size increased with increasing Gd. Phase analysis showed that MgZn2 phase was observed in the Mg–4.5Zn alloy. While with Gd additions, Mg3Gd and Mg3Gd2Zn3 phases formed, and the volume fraction of the Mg3Gd2Zn3 phase increased with increasing Gd. Tensile test results indicated that the optimal mechanical properties were obtained in the Mg–4.5Zn–2Gd alloy, and the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were 215MPa and 121MPa, respectively. However, the strength decreased with increasing Gd, which was mainly due to the increasing volume fraction of the Mg3Gd2Zn3 phase.

Abstract:Pure Zn is well-known for its appropriate corrosion rate, making it suitable for use as future absorbable implants. Yet, it suffers from insufficient strength, thus, both plastic deformation and alloying are required. Hydrostatic extrusion has proven to be an efficient technique, providing high mechanical properties for zinc alloys. However, its effect on degradation rate and biocompatibility of Zn alloys remains unknown. Thus, within the present study, an attempt to evaluate those properties has been made on hydrostatically extruded pure Zn, Zn–Mg and Zn–Mg–Cu alloys. The materials were characterized by advanced microscopy techniques and uniaxial tensile tests. Corrosion properties were assessed based on electrochemical and static immersion tests. Finally, the cytotoxic effect of zinc extracts on endothelial cells were examined by standard MTT assays combined with confocal imaging. The results showed that hydrostatic extrusion results in significant refinement of α-Zn grains and the intermetallic phase Mg 2 Zn 11 for the investigated alloys. The alloys exhibited ultimate tensile strength exceeding 300 MPa and elongation higher than 20%. Corrosion tests demonstrated that all the materials showed a similar level of degradation rate. Moreover, the uniform distribution of the intermetallic phase contributed to homogeneous corrosion of Zn alloys. Biological studies indicated that the least cytotoxic response in endothelial cells was obtained for the Zn–Mg alloy. Such an effect was caused by the limited amount of released Zn ions in the favor of Mg ions. The refinement of α-Zn grains and intermetallic phases caused by hydrostatic extrusion were key factors determining the performance of Zn-based materials.
