Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal has been considered as a potential substitute for the graphite anode in Li-ion batteries to further boost their energy density. Polymer electrolytes (PEs) are expected to be applied in Li metal batteries (LMB) to replace liquid electrolytes due to safety concerns. Among others, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based electrolytes offer clear advantages such as improved processability and chemical/electrochemical stability. However, Li dendrite growth in LMBs and the low Li-ion conductivity of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) still hinder their practical applications. To address this issue, it has been proposed that solvent-enhanced PVDF-HFP-based polymer electrolytes (SPPEs) with a tuned amount of residual N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) could provide improved ionic conductivity and outstanding chemical/electrochemical stability. We report herein the effects of different salts, polymer, and additives on the electrochemical performance and interface stability of SPPEs. We demonstrate that lithium salts and blended polymers play a pivotal role in the electrochemical performance of SPPEs. In addition, additives exert a remarkable effect on the stripping/plating behaviors of metallic lithium anode in SPPEs. SPPEs with adequate LiNO3 are found to be stable with lower overpotentials at 0.5 mA cm−2 on cycling of symmetrical Li cells. These results highlight novel SPPE strategies for optimizing the ionic conductivity and stabilizing the lithium metal anodes.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal batteries with high energy density and safety have gained increasing attention due to their potential applications. However, the practical use of solid electrolytes is hindered by several challenges. These include poor compatibility at the electrode-electrolyte interface, low ionic conductivity at room temperature, and fast capacity degradation. To address these issues, here we propose ternary strategies by in-situ cross-linked plastic crystal electrolyte (in-situ PCE) based on succinonitrile (SN). Through the in-situ polymerization of SN with polyacrylonitrile/poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PAN/PVDF) nanofibers separator, excellent mechanical strength and compatibility at the electrode-electrolyte interface are achieved. The cross-linked structure of thermally polymerized ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (ETPTA) immobilizes the SN molecule, preventing its contact with the lithium metal and inhibiting irreversible side reactions. Additionally, a LiF-rich passivation layer is employed to further protect the SN at the electrolyte-lithium metal interface. The dual protection from ETPTA and LiF offers excellent stability to lithium. Hence, the in-situ PCE exhibits high ionic conductivity (0.79 mS cm-1 at 30 degrees C) and wide electrochemical window (4.56 V, vs Li+/Li). The cells exhibit excellent cycling stability and high-rate performance. LiFePO4//Li cells retain 96.6 % capacity after 1000 cycles at 10C rate. This study provides valuable insights into the development of high-performance solid-state electrolytes.
Composition regulation of polyacrylonitrile-based polymer electrolytes enabling dual-interfacially stable solid-state lithium batteries

Abstract:The polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is an attractive matrix of polymer electrolytes owing to its wide electrochemical window and strong coordination with Li salts. However, the PAN-based electrolytes undergo severe interfacial problems from both cathode and anode sides, including uneven ionic transfer induced by high rigidity of dry PAN-based polymer, as well as inferior stability against Li-metal anode. Herein, the composition regulation of PAN-based electrolytes is proposed by introducing succinonitrile (SN) plastic crystal and LiNO3 salt for the construction of interfacially stable solid-state lithium batteries. The plastic nature of SN enables the rapid ionic transfer in electrolytes, along with the establishment of conformally interfacial contacts. Meanwhile, a stable solid-electrolyte-interface (SEI) layer consisting of Li3N and LiNO2 is in-situ formed at Li/electrolyte interface, contributing to the inhibition of uncontrol reactions between PAN and Li-metal. Consequently, the resultant Li symmetric cell delivers an extended critical current density of 1.7 mA cm-2 and an outstanding cycling lifespan of 700 h at 0.1 mA cm-2. Moreover, the corresponding solid-state LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2/Li full cell shows an initial discharge capacity of 161 mAh/g followed by an outstanding capacity retention of 88.7 % after 100 cycles at 0.1C. This work paves the way for application of PAN-based electrolytes in the field of solid-state batteries by facile composition regulation.

Abstract:To enhance the safety of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), alternatives to liquid electrolytes are widely studied. One of them is the plastic-crystal succinonitrile (SN) which can solvate various Li salts.[1] This system can be further extended by inserting polymers, bringing additional advantages such as higher melting points and the possibility of adjusting thermo-mechanical and electrochemical properties.[2] The plastic-crystalline electrolyte consisting of the Li salt lithium bis(trifluoro-methanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) dissolved in SN was extended by adding various thermoplastic polymers, namely, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), polyethylene carbonate (PEC), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Even small amounts (10 wt %) of added polymer to the SN-base were found to impact the Li-ion mobility. Variable temperature investigations on structure and ion dynamics were performed using static and magic angle spinning (MAS) solid-state NMR and various relaxometry measurements. Influence of the Li-concentration and the polymers’ functional groups on the structure of SN and the resulting Li-ion mobility was elaborated. Activation energies and jump rates of the Li-ions were determined. As a result, the PAN containing system stands out to be a promising candidate for application in future LIBs as it shows high ion mobility, low activation energy, and a high potential for further modifications. Solid-state NMR turned out to be a reliable method and a good alternative to impedance spectroscopy measurements for investigating ion mobility behaviour providing even more information.[3] Literature: [1] S. Rigid and flexible dual-network polymer electrolytes with enhanced interfacial interaction to accelerate Li+ transfer

Abstract:Composite solid-state electrolytes with high structural strength and toughness are effective means to improve the safety and processability of solid-state batteries. However, due to the poor interface compatibility between polymers and inorganic electrolytes, the efficiency of lithium ion transport is affected. To address these issues, we utilized electrospinning technology to prepare highly tough polyacrylonitrile porous membranes. Subsequently, a rigid covalent organic framework electrolyte CPTP was polymerized in situ within the pores to fabricate a rigid and flexible dual-network polymer electrolyte (PAN/CPTP). Experimental results indicate that the carbon–hydrogen compound CPTP interacts with PAN through hydrogen bonding, thus enhancing the interface compatibility of the composite electrolyte, with a resulting mechanical strength as high as 15.5 MPa. The optimized interface eliminates the Li + transport barriers between the PAN and CPTP networks, thus increasing the concentration of free lithium ions in the electrolyte and reducing the lithium ion transport barrier. The lithium ion conductivity (0.94 × 10 −3 S cm −1 ) and Li ion transfer selectivity ( t Li + = 0.89) of the composite electrolyte were significantly improved at 30 °C, demonstrating excellent stability towards high-voltage cathodes and lithium metal. Thus, Li//PAN/CPTP//Li symmetric batteries could operate stably for 4000 hours, and NCM811//PAN/CPTP//Li full cells could be cycled stably over 200 times at 4.5 V and 30 °C with 85% capacity retention. This rigid and flexible polymer electrolyte film is easy to prepare over a large area, and the assembled flexible pouch cell has high flexibility and safety.

Abstract:Ceramic Li6.55Al0.2La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is one of the most attractive electrolyte materials for solid-state batteries that combined with metallic Li anodes holds the promise for safer and more energetically dense battery, but its performance is limited by the increases in electrolyte-electrode interfacial resistances upon cycling. The combination of Li + -conducting ceramics and polymers offers a new pathway to create better electrolytes with both high ionic conductivity and good (electro)mechanical interfacial properties. We optimized two-step annealing processing conditions for the fabrication of low temperature cubic-LLZO nanofibers and Li 2 CO 3 removal from the surface of the nanofibers. Using industrially relevant roll-to-roll electrospinning and slot-die coating, we fabricated thin composite membranes with reproducible thickness down to 50 microns. We investigated PEO based composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) with a high, 50 wt% loading of Al-doped LLZO nanofibers in comparison with nanofiber-free PEO electrolyte. XPS measurements show that LLZO is not present at the composite electrolyte surface, and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation is dictated solely by PEO and LiTFSI when reacting with Li metal. Electrochemical SEI formation, studied by cyclic voltammetry, shows SEI formation is identical with and without up to 75 wt% LLZO in the electrolyte. Galvanostatic cycling with lithium symmetric cells shows that the critical current density (CCD) can be tripled by including 50 wt% LLZO, but half cell cycling reveals this comes at the cost of CE. Varying the LLZO loading shows that even a small amount of LLZO drastically lowers the CE, from 88% at 0 wt% LLZO to 77% at just 2 wt% LLZO. Mesoscale modelling reveals that the increase in CCD cannot be explained by an increase in the macroscopic or microscopic stiffness of the electrolyte; only the microstructure of the LLZO nanofibers in the PEO-LiTFSI matrix slows dendrite growth by presenting physical barriers that the dendrites must push or grow around. This tortuous lithium growth mechanism around the LLZO is corroborated with mass spectrometry imaging. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis showed comparable bulk ionic and interfacial resistances with and without nanofibers, indicating that PEO dominates Li + transport and interfacial chemistry. The total Li-ion conductivity of the composite is still governed by the polymer matrix due to high interfacial resistance between the garnet particles and the PEO/LiTFSI matrix. This work highlights important elements to consider in the design of CPEs for high-efficiency lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Composite solid electrolytes (CSEs), often incorporating succinonitrile (SCN), offer promi I confirm sing solutions for improving the performance of all-solid-state batteries. These electrolytes are typically made of ceramics such as Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) and polymers such as poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP). Garnet-applied polymer–ceramic electrolyte (g-PCE) is composed of PVDF-HFP, SCN, and LLZO. However, the interface between SCN and LLZO is reportedly unstable owing to the polymerization of SCN. This polymerization could cause two serious problems: (1) gelation during the mixing of LLZO and SCN and (2) degradation of ionic performance during charge and discharge. To prevent this catalytic reaction, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) can be added to the g-PCE (g-PPCE). PAN blocks the polymerization of SCN through a cyclization process involving La ions which occurs more rapidly than SCN polymerization. In this study, the enhanced chemical stability of the garnet-applied PAN-added polymer ceramic electrolyte (g-PPCE) was achieved by using an impregnation process which added SCN with 5 wt.% of PAN. The resulting CSE has an ionic conductivity of ~10-4 S/cm at room temperature. Coin-type cells assembled with LFP (LiFePO4) and LNCM (LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2) cathodes with Li-metal anodes show specific discharge capacities of 150 and 167 mAh/g at 0.1 C, respectively, and stable cycle performance. Additionally, a pouch-type cell with a discharge capacity of 5 mAh also exhibits potential electrochemical performance.

Composite Polymer Electrolytes Based on PVA/PAN for All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries Operated at Room Temperature

Abstract:In this study, we used a solution-casting technique to prepare all-solid-state composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) based on poly(vinyl alcohol)/polyacrylonitrile blends, the ceramic filler Li14Al04Ti16(PO4)3 (LATP, NASICON-type structure), lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, and the solid plasticizer succinonitrile (SN) and then investigated their electrochemical stability, ionic transport properties, and interfacial behavior against lithium electrodes The CPEs prepared with optimal concentrations of LATP (20 wt %) and SN (10 wt %) exhibited a maximum ionic conductivity of 1.13 × 10–4 S cm–1 at 25 °C, a Li+-ion transference number of 0.507, and an electrochemical stability window of 5.1 V (vs Li/Li+). This CPE was a free-standing membrane and highly flexible. An all-solid-state Li//LiFePO4 battery assembled with this CPE displayed excellent cycling stability and rate performance at room temperature. A maximum discharge capacity of 159.6 mA h g–1 was achieved at 0.1C. The full cell achieved a discharge capacity of 119.4 mA h g–1 at 0.5C and a capacity retention of 90.5% after 100 cycles at ambient temperature. Polar groups promoting in-situ polymerization phase separation for solid electrolytes enabling solid-state lithium batteries

Abstract:Plastic-crystal-embedded elastomer electrolytes (PCEEs), produced through polymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS), are gaining popularity as solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). However, it remains to be investigated whether all monomer molecules can achieve polymerization-induced phase separation and the corresponding differences in lithium metal battery performance. Herein, we prepared PCEEs with different functional groups (OH, CN, F) through in situ polymerization. Research findings show that PCEE containing - CN or - F achieves the separation of the plastic crystalline phase and succinonitrile (SN) phase, whereas PCEE containing OH cannot due to hydrogen bonding with the SN phase. Notably, the PCEE synthesized with the F monomer (FBA-PCEE) exhibited exceptional interfacial stability with lithium metal anodes and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathodes, due to its unique coordination mechanism with lithium ions. The FBA-PCEE demonstrated a high ionic conductivity (2.02 × 10-3 S cm-1) and lithium-ion migration number ( [Formula: see text] = 0.75). Moreover, lithium symmetric cells incorporating FBA-PCEE demonstrated stable cycling performance for more than 1000 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm-2, resulting in the development of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) rich in LiF, Li3N, and Li2CO3 over time. Additionally, incorporating FBA-PCEE facilitated the stable cycling of LPF over 1000 cycles at 0.5C, maintaining a capacity retention of 77.38 % after 500 cycles. When coupled with high-voltage Nickel Cobalt Manganese Oxide (NCM-622) cathodes and lithium metal anodes, a discharge capacity of 119.70 mAh g-1 at 0.1C was sustained after 100 cycles, exhibiting a capacity retention of 78.95 %. This study elucidates the critical role of monomer design in achieving PIPS, offering valuable insights into developing high-performance polymer composite electrolytes for advanced lithium metal batteries.
In Situ Constructing Robust Interface by Deep Eutectic Polymeric Electrolyte Enables High Performance Lithium Metal Batteries with High‐Loading Cathode

Abstract:A polymerizable deep eutectic electrolyte with high fluidity is elaborately designed to promote Li+ transport and ameliorate the interface of (PAN)‐based composite solid‐state electrolytes. The interfacial eutectic polymerization strategy effectively enhances the compatibility of the SP‐PCPE with high‐voltage and high‐loading cathodes, and Lithium metal, giving rise to the excellent performance of solid‐state batteries. The low Li+ transport and poor interface have consistently been two major impediments to practical applications of Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)‐based composite solid‐state electrolytes (PCPE). In this work, a polymerizable deep eutectic electrolyte is meticulously designed with high fluidity which consists of Poly (Ethylene Glycol) Diacrylate (PEGDA), Fluoroethylene Carbonate (FEC), Succinonitrile (SN) and dual salts (LiTFSI/LiDFOB) to promote Li+ transport and ameliorate the interface of PCPE. Inclusion of PEGDA monomers and FEC alters the crystallinity of SN, enhancing the wettability of thick electrode, and formation of polymeric 3D network from polymerization of PEGDA can anchor SN and suppress the side reactions between SN and lithium metal. Consequently, the modified PCPE exhibit an enhanced conductivity of 4.47 × 10−4 S cm−1 with Li‐ion transference number of 0.60, and show an excellent lithium stability. LiCoO2(LCO)/SP‐PCPE/Li batteries with higher loading (3–4.4 V, 6 mg cm−2) can work for over 300 cycles at 0.5 C. Even with an ultra‐high loading of 16 mg cm−2, LCO/SP‐PCPE/Li batteries achieve an excellent cycling performance. This work provides new insights into how to construct a robust interface for solid‐state batteries with high‐loading cathode.

Enhanced electrochemical stability and ion transfer rate: A polymer/ceramic composite electrolyte for high-performance all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract:All-solid-state (ASS) lithium-sulfur (LiS) batteries utilizing composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) represent a promising avenue in the domain of electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems, leveraging the combined benefits of polymer electrolytes (PEs) and ceramic electrolytes (CEs). However, the inherent weak interface compatibility between PEs and CEs often leads to phase separation, thereby impeding the transposition of Li+. In this study, the trimethoxy-[3-(2-methoxyethoxy)propyl]silane (TM-MES) is introduced as a chemical agent to form bonds with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and Li10GeP2S12 (LGPS), resulting in the development of a novel composite polymer electrolyte (CPETM-MES). This innovative approach mitigates phase separation between PEs and CEs while concurrently enhancing the protective capabilities of LGPS against decomposition at the interfaces of both the Li anode and sulfur cathode. Moreover, the CPETM-MES exhibits superior mechanical toughness, an expanded electrochemical window, and elevated ionic conductivity. In the symmetric cell, it demonstrates an extended operational lifespan exceeding 1800 h, and the current density can reach up to 1.05 mA/cm2. Furthermore, the initial discharge capacity of ASS LiS batteries utilizing CPETM-MES attains 1227 mAh/g and maintains a capacity of 904 mAh/g after 100 cycles. Notably, a high-energy-density of 2454 Wh/kg is achieved based on the sulfur cathode.

Abstract:Polymer electrolyte (PE) that possesses improved thermal and mechanical stability is believed to be by far one of the most promising electrolytes for meeting the safety and performance needs of advanced electrochemical devices. Here, high-performance PEs are fabricated via facile thiol-Michael addition catalyzed by triethylamine in the presence of lithium salts. The lithium salt functions as both an ion source and a co-catalyst, significantly accelerating the thiol-Michael addition reaction. The PEs exhibit a superior thermal decomposition temperature up to 300 °C. Additionally, PEs from the thiol-decorated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane display reversible electrochemical response and stable cycling performance. Abstract:The succinonitrile (SN) plastic crystal electrolyte with excellent comprehensive properties such as high room temperature (RT) ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window and low cost, making it a promising candidate for RT solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs). However, severe spontaneous chemical reactions between SN and active Li anode cause serious damage to the electrolyte/electrode interface, which still needs to be further improved. In this work, an in -situ polymerized SN-based composite solid-state electrolyte (CSE) is exploited to conquer the severe side -reactions between SN-based electrolyte and Li anode, the PALA0.5@-CSE (polyacrylonitrile (PAN): modified-Li l.3 Al 0.3 Ti l.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP@) = 1:0.5, w/w) demonstrates an outstanding ionic conductivity (0.45 mS cm - 1 ), high electrochemical stability (5.1 V) and improved Li + transference number (0.67) at RT. The Li symmetric cells with PALA0.5@-CSE shows a high critical current density (CCD) of 1.2 mA cm - 2 , and the Li symmetric cells deliver excellent cycle stability over 500 h, demonstrating the superior ability of PALA0.5@-CSE to suppress the side -reactions between SN and Li anode and the rapid growth of Li dendrite. In Li||LiFePO 4 (LFP) full cell, the SSLBs provide excellent RT rate capability and stable cycling performance. Moreover, the PALA0.5@-CSE possesses high thermal stability and incombustibility, demonstrating its superior safety for the future utilization of SN-based SSLBs.

Abstract:A cross‐linked network polymer strategy is proposed to modify the Li‐ion transport pathway in Succinonitrile (SCN) based plastic crystal electrolytes, aiming to significantly improve the ionic conductivity. The strong interaction between the polymer matrix and SCN can anchor and regulate SCN molecules and form a fast conduction pathway (polymer—[SCN—Li+]), thereby significantly improving the electrochemical performance of the electrolyte. Succinonitrile (SCN) based plastic crystal electrolytes (SPCEs) have attracted much attention for lithium metal batteries due to their considerable ionic conductivity and thermal stability. Insufficient mechanical properties, weak reductive stability, and the presence of free SCN molecules can result in adverse interfacial reactions. Polymer introduction has been explored to address these challenges. However, the introduction of polymer affects the SCN state, leading to reduced ionic conductivity, potentially due to limited segmental motion of the polymer at room temperature. Herein, a cross‐linked network polymer strategy is proposed to modify the Li‐ion transport pathway in SPCE, aiming to significantly improve the ionic conductivity. The strong interaction between the polymer matrix and SCN enhances their mutual solubility, reduces the crystallinity of SCN, and forms a rapid conduction pathway (polymer—[SCN—Li+]). The ionic conductivity of SPCE increases to 1.28 mS cm−1, with the Li‐ion migration number (tLi+ ) also rising to 0.7. Electrochemical performances in Li symmetrical, Li||LiFePO4 and Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cells show significant improvement at both room temperature and 0 °C. These findings suggest that designing polymer network structures in SPCEs holds promise for solid‐state lithium metal battery applications.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes play a vital role in improving the safety of lithium batteries. However, low ionic conductivity and poor mechanical property limit their further applications. Herein, we fabricated a composite solid electrolyte (CSE) based on a polymer (polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoro propylene, PVDF-HFP) and an inorganic filler of porous graphitic carbon nitride (PGCN) nanosheets with a high specific surface area. The porous structure facilitated good distribution of PGCN in the PVDF-HFP matrix and offered abundant PVDF-HFP/PGCN interfaces, which might be beneficial for the Li+ transport. The CSE showed high ionic conductivity (2.3 × 10–4 S/cm at 30 °C), excellent cycling performance, and outstanding physical and chemical properties. Abstract:Employing three variants of lithium salts as catalysts, poly(ester‐alt‐acetal) electrolytes are synthesized via in situ copolymerization of glutaric anhydride and 1,3‐dioxane, leading to alternating arrangements of ester and acetal groups. These lithium salts additionally serve as promoters for solid‐electrolyte interphase formation. Remarkably, the SEI formed by LiPF6 displays the densest structure and demonstrates superior performance. The in situ‐formed polymer electrolytes provide a vital solution for improving both safety and performance in the high‐voltage lithium metal batteries. This study reports new poly(ester‐alt‐acetal) (PEA) electrolytes, synthesized through in situ alternating copolymerization of glutaric anhydride and 1,3‐dioxane. In the presence of 25 wt.% lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), three lithium salts, lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate (LiDFOB), lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6), and lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4) are employed as the catalysts for the copolymerization. These lithium salts can modulate the compositions of the solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. PEA‐LiPF6 exhibits outstanding SEI chemistry, with observing the highest LiF content, thereby achieving a remarkable critical current density of up to 2.5 mA cm−2, a Li+ transference number of 0.81, and an expansive electrochemical stability window of 6.0 V. Furthermore, PEA‐LiPF6 demonstrates noteworthy capacity retention rates of 96.6% (0.5 C, 200th/first cycle in LiFePO4||Li), 95.6% (0.5 C, 100th/first cycle in LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4||Li), 95.1% (1 C, 100th/first cycle in LiCoO2||Li), and 87.0% (1 C, 100th/first cycle in LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2||Li full‐cells). This work demonstrates a facile in situ route to fabricate polymer electrolytes for high‐voltage lithium‐metal batteries with balanced and comprehensive performance.

Organic Cationic-Coordinated Perfluoropolymer Electrolytes with Strong Li+-Solvent Interaction for Solid State Li-Metal Batteries

Abstract:The practical application of solid-state polymer lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) is plagued by the inferior ionic conductivity of the applied polymer electrolytes (PEs), which is caused by the coupling of ion transport with the motion of polymer segments. Here, solvated molecules based on ionic liquid and lithium salt with strong Li+-solvent interaction are inserted into an elaborately engineered perfluoropolymer electrolyte via ionic dipole interaction, extensively facilitating Li+ transport and improving mechanical properties. The intensified formation of solvation structures of contact ion pairs and ionic aggregates, as well as the strong electron-withdrawal properties of the F atoms in perfluoropolymers, give the PE high electrochemical stability and excellent interfacial stability. As a result, Li||Li symmetric cells demonstrate a lifetime of 2500 h and an exceptionally high critical current density above 2.3 mA cm-2, Li||LiFePO4 batteries exhibit consistent cycling for 550 cycles at 10 C, and Li||uncoated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cells achieve 1000 cycles at 0.5 C with an average Coulombic efficiency of 98.45%, one of the best results reported to date based on PEs. Our discovery sheds fresh light on the targeted synergistic regulation of the electro-chemo-mechanical properties of PEs to extend the cycle life of LMBs.

Abstract:The application of solid-state electrolyte in lithium metal batteries is a promising technology to meet the demands for next-generation high-energy-density storage systems. Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes have been widely studied, but their electrochemical window is too narrow to be compatible with high-voltage cathodes and their mechanical properties are poor as well. Combination of organic and inorganic compounds is an effective approach to solve this limitation. In this study, Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) was surface-modified with a silane coupling agent and compounded with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to form a 3D nanofiber framework via electrospinning technology, and the PEO-Succinonitrile (SN)-LiTFSI solution was uniformly dispersed in the 3D nanofiber framework to form a continuous Li+ transport path. The prepared composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) showed high ionic conductivity (1.58 × 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature), a broad electrochemical window (5.1 V, vs. Li/Li+), and an attractive mechanical strength of 49.4 MPa. In addition, solid-state Li/CSE/NCM811 batteries exhibited high coulombic efficiency and significant stable cycling performance.

Abstract:Lithium metal anodes have been pursued for decades as a way to significantly increase the energy density of lithium-ion batteries. However, safety risks caused by flammable liquid electrolytes and short circuits due to lithium dendrite formation during cell cycling have so far prevented the use of lithium metal in commercial batteries. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) offer a potential solution if their mechanical properties and ionic conductivity can be simultaneously engineered. Here, we introduce a family of SPEs that are scalable and easy to prepare with a photopolymerization process, synthesized from amphiphilic acrylic polymer conetworks based on poly(ethylene glycol), 2-hydroxy-ethylacrylate, norbornyl acrylate, and either lithium bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) or a single-ion polymethacrylate as lithium-ion source. Several conetworks were synthesized and cycled, and their ionic conductivity, mechanical properties, and lithium transference number were characterized. A single-ion-conducting polymer electrolyte shows the best compromise between the different properties and extends the calendar life of the cell.
