Abstract:Solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) has been considered as promising candidate electrolyte for solid-state lithium metal battery. However, the low ion conductivity and poor interface stability seriously hinder the development of SPE. Introducing the functional filler is a commonly used and effective approach to solving these issues. The poor compatibility and ambiguous mechanism of action are currently the main challenges. In this study, we design and synthesize carbon dots (NSFCDs) with quaternary functional groups, which are introduced into the SPE in the polymerization process of hybrid polymer electrolyte (HPE). The detailed effect law of polyfunctional groups on the polymer chain structure, interface structure of electrolyte/electrode and ion migration is systematically revealed. The dense polymer network endows HPE with enhanced mechanical properties. Through the regulation of polymer segments, the coordination environment of lithium ions is altered, promoting ion transport. The solid electrolyte interface (SEI) induced by NSFCDs and lithium salt anions effectively improves the morphology of lithium ion deposition and alleviates volume strain. As a result, the HPE based on polyethylene oxide (PEO) constructed by free radical polymerization of NSFCDs and polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) exhibits excellent comprehensive performance, the assembled Li symmetric battery can cycle stably for 4000 hours.

Abstract:The serious dendrite formation and safety hazards associated with side reactions hinder the practical application of lithium metal batteries. A molecular customization polymer based on physicochemical properties as ASEI is reported. The copolymer has excellent mechanical properties and water and oxygen resistance. The ester and amide groups serve as amphiphilic sites, regulating the ion flux and achieving dendrite‐free lithium deposition. The serious dendrite formation and safety hazards associated with side reactions hinder the practical application of lithium metal batteries. A molecular customization strategy based on both physical and chemical properties is reported. A copolymer of acrylamide and hexafluorobutyl acrylate molecules is used as an artificial solid electrolyte interface(ASEI) for lithium metal to achieve dynamic interface protection during cycling. The amide group serves as the rigid unit, while the hexafluorobutyl group serves as the flexible unit, and imparts excellent mechanical properties to the copolymer. Synergistically abundant C─F bonds exhibit excellent water and oxygen resistance and have good electrolyte affinity. The ester and amide groups serve as amphiphilic sites for Li+ and PF6−, regulating the ion flux at the interface and achieving dendrite‐free lithium deposition. During cycling, the organic–inorganic composite SEI dynamically evolves to safeguard the lithium metal, preventing undue electrolyte consumption. The copolymer achieves stable cycling for 1500 and 950 h at 1 and 2 mA cm−2, respectively. It demonstrates excellent performance with LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 and LiFePO4 cathodes. This study introduces a new approach to designing polymers at the molecular level to optimize the physical properties/chemical activity of lithium metal interfaces.

A Three-Dimensional Co-Continuous Network Structure Polymer Electrolyte with Efficient Ion Transport Channels Enabling Ultralong-Life All Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have emerged as one of the most promising candidates for the construction of solid-state lithium batteries due to their excellent flexibility, scalability, and interface compatibility with electrodes. Herein, a novel all-solid polymer electrolyte (PPLCE) was fabricated by the copolymer network of liquid crystalline monomers and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) acts as a structural frame, combined with poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether short chain interspersed serving as mobile ion transport entities. The preparaed PPLCEs exhibit excellent mechanical property and outstanding electrochemical performances, which is attributed to their unique three-dimensional co-continuous structure, characterized by a cross-linked semi-interpenetrating network and an ionic liquid phase, resulting in a distinctive nanostructure with short-range order and long-range disorder. Remarkably, the addition of PEGDMA is proved to be critical to the comprehensive performance of the PPLCEs, which effectively modulates the microscopic morphology of polymer networks and improves the mechanical properties as well as cycling stability of the solid electrolyte. When used in a lithium-ion symmetrical battery configuration, the 6 wt%-PPLCE exhibited super stability, sustaining operation for over 2000 h at 30 °C, with minimal and consistent overpotential of 50 mV. The resulting Li|PPLCE|LFP solid-state battery demonstrated high discharge specific capacities of 160.9 mA h g-1 and 120.1 mA h g-1 at current densities of 0.2 C and 1 C, respectively. Even after more than 300 cycles at a current density of 0.2 C, it retained an impressive 73.5% capacity. Moreover, it displayed stable cycling for over 180 cycles at a high current density of 0.5 C. The super cycle stability may promote the application for ultralong-life all solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Bidirectionally functional polymer electrolytes are designed directly via UV solidification of functional species on electrode surfaces to simultaneously handle the interface issues faced by the anode and cathode. Meanwhile, a stable solid electrolyte interphase and phosphate‐based cathode–electrolyte interface layer is constructed. The finding provides a promising design strategy to accommodate the anode and cathode interfaces for high energy density solid lithium metal batteries. The development of high energy density lithium metal batteries has been retarded by the uncontrolled lithium dendrite formation and unstable Ni‐rich cathode–electrolyte interface (CEI). Herein, the bidirectionally functional polymer electrolytes (BDFPE) are designed via direct UV solidification of functional polymer species on electrode surfaces to simultaneously handle the interface issues faced by anodes and cathodes. By constructing the BDFPE, a smooth and dendrite‐free lithium deposition is enabled for Li||Li symmetry cells after 1800 h ultralong cycling at 1 mA cm−2 and 1 mAh cm−2, which are attributed to the fast ion conductivity (5.84 × 10−4 S cm−1), high Li+ transfer number (0.69) of BDFPE and low interfacial resistance between electrode and solid electrolytes. Furthermore, Li||LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 batteries demonstrate a favorable cycling and rate capability, and a stable and phosphate‐based CEI layer is constructed in situ. DFT studies reveal that the functional additives FEC and TEP participate in the interface formation. The finding provides a promising design strategy to accommodate the anode and cathode interfaces for high energy density lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Poly(ethylene oxide)-based solid-state electrolytes are widely considered promising candidates for the next generation of lithium and sodium metal batteries. However, several challenges, including low oxidation resistance and low cation transference number, hinder poly(ethylene oxide)-based electrolytes for broad applications. To circumvent these issues, here, we propose the design, synthesis and application of a fluoropolymer, i.e., poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate). This polymer, when introduced into a poly(ethylene oxide)-based solid electrolyte, improves the electrochemical window stability and transference number. Via multiple physicochemical and theoretical characterizations, we identify the presence of tailored supramolecular bonds and peculiar morphological structures as the main factors responsible for the improved electrochemical performances. The polymeric solid electrolyte is also investigated in full lithium and sodium metal lab-scale cells. Interestingly, when tested in a single-layer pouch cell configuration in combination with a Li metal negative electrode and a LiMn 0.6 Fe 0.4 PO 4 -based positive electrode, the polymeric solid-state electrolyte enables 200 cycles at 42 mA·g −1 and 70 °C with a stable discharge capacity of approximately 2.5 mAh when an external pressure of 0.28 MPa is applied.

Three-dimensional Polyimide Nanofiber Framework Reinforced Polymer Electrolyte for All-Solid-state Lithium Metal Battery

Abstract:The replacement of traditional liquid electrolytes with polyethylene oxide (PEO) based composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) is an important strategy to address the current flammability and explosiveness of lithium batteries since PEO CPEs have high flexibility, excellent processability and moderate cost. However, the insufficient ionic conductivity and inferior mechanical strength of PEO CPEs do not suit the operating requirements of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries at room temperature. Herein, three-dimensional (3D) framework composed of interweaved high-modulus polyimide (PI) nanofibers along with functional succinonitrile (SN) plasticizers are employed to synergistically reinforce the ionic conductivity and mechanical strength of PEO CPEs. Impressively, benefitting from the synergistic effects of 3D PI framework and SN plasticizer, PI-PEO-SN CPEs exhibits high ionic conductivity of 1.03 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at 30 degrees C, remarkable tensile strength of 4.52 MPa, and superior Li dendrites blocking ability (>400 h at 0.1 mA cm(-2)). Such favorable features of PI-PEO-SN CPEs endow LiFePO4/PI-PEO-SN/Li solid-state prototype cells with high specific capacity (151.2 mA h g(-1) at 0.2 C), long cycling lifespan (>150 cycles with 91.7 % capacity retention), and superior operating safety even under bending, folding and cutting harsh conditions. Abstract:Satisfactory ionic conductivity, excellent mechanical stability, and high-temperature resistance are the prerequisites for the safe application of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) in all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs). In this study, a novel poly-m-phenyleneisophthalamide (PMIA)-core/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-shell nanofiber membrane and the functional Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) ceramic nanoparticle are simultaneously introduced into the PEO-based SPEs to prepare composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs). The core PMIA layer of composite nanofibers can greatly improve the mechanical strength and thermal stability of the CPEs, while the shell PEO layer can provide the 3D continuous transport channels for lithium ions. In addition, the introduction of functional LLZTO nanoparticle not only reduces the crystallinity of PEO, but also promotes the dissociation of lithium salts and releases more Li+ ions through its interaction with the Lewis acid-base of anions, thereby overall improving the transport of lithium ions. Consequently, the optimized CPEs present high ionic conductivity of 1.38×10−4 S/cm at 30 °C, significantly improved mechanical strength (8.5 MPa), remarkable thermal stability (without obvious shrinkage at 150 °C), and conspicuous Li dendrites blocking ability (>1800 h). The CPEs also both have good compatibility and cyclic stability with LiFePO4 (>2000 cycles) and high-voltage LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) (>500 cycles) cathodes. In addition, even at low temperature (40 °C), the assembled LiFePO4/CPEs/Li battery still can cycle stably. The novel design can provide an effective way to exploit high-performance solid-state electrolytes.

Abstract:Polymer electrolytes are considered one of the most pragmatic choices for achieving lithium metal batteries (LMBs) with enhanced energy density and safety. Nevertheless, unsatisfactory comprehensive performance in terms of inadequate mechanical properties, sluggish Li+ transport kinetics, and inferior electrode/electrolyte interfacial stability significantly constrain their practical utility. Herein, a rational molecular-level design is proposed to construct a novel polymer framework for gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs), which is accomplished by incorporating abundant acylamino-sites to establish a subtle hierarchical supramolecular network with permanent chemical crosslinking and reversible hydrogen bonding. The ingenious network combined with soft chain moiety regulation endows GPEs with highly enhanced mechanical strength and adaptable flexibility. Furthermore, the involvement of the unique polymer skeleton creates fast and reversible lanes for lithium-ion transport, with significant contributions from the acylamino sites and the pre-desolvation effect of the whole polymer matrix. Besides, the formation of favorable interphase compositions is conducive to dual-reinforced stable interfaces. Due to the ideal combination of accelerated Li+ transport and enhanced interfacial stability, an LFP||Li cell assembled with acylamino-functionalized GPEs exhibits an impressively long lifespan with capacity retention of 96.5% over 850 cycles at 1 C, and an LCO||Li cell can maintain a capacity retention of 96.8% after 300 cycles at 1 C. This study highlights the significance of bulk electrolytes and interface regulation in tandem and supplies novel insights into rational design for polymer architecture, ramping up the competitiveness of yielded electrolytes for prospective applications in the LMB realm.

Designing a Refined Multi‐Structural Polymer Electrolyte Framework for Highly Stable Lithium‐Metal Batteries

Abstract:Rational structural designs of solid polymer electrolytes featuring rich interface-phase morphologies can improve electrolyte connection and rapid ion transport. However, these rigid interfacial structures commonly result in diminished or entirely inert ionic conductivity within their bulk phase, compromising overall electrolyte performance. Herein, a multi-component ion-conductive electrolyte was successfully designed based on a refined multi-structural polymer electrolyte (RMSPE) framework with uniform Li+ solvation chemistry and rapid Li+ transporting kinetics. The RMSPE is constructed via polymerization-induced phase separation based on a rational combination of lithiophilic components and rigid/flexible chain units with significant hydrophobic/hydrophilic contrasts. Further refined by coating a robust polymer network, this all-organic design endows a homogenous micro-nano porous structure, providing a novel framework favorable for rapid ion transport in both its soft interfacial and bulk phases. The RMSPE exhibited excellent ion conductivity of 1.91 mS cm−1 at room temperature and a high Li+ transference number of 0.7. Assembled symmetrical Li cells realized stable cycling for over 2400 h at 3.0 mA cm−2. LiFePO4 full batteries demonstrated a long lifespan of 3300 cycles with a capacity retention of 93.5% and stable cycling performance at −35 °C. This innovative design concept offers a promising perspective for achieving high-performance polymer-based Li metal batteries.

Abstract:A metal‐organic framework‐derived elastic solid polymer electrolyte (ePU@H) is meticulously designed and fabricated via low‐temperature polymerization. The reduced crystallinity and abundant polar functional groups facilitate Li salt dissociation and ensure rapid Li+ ion transport, yielding elevated ionic conductivity. Mechanical robustness and excellent resilience suppress lithium dendrite growth and accommodate electrode volume fluctuations during cycling, contributing to high‐performance lithium metal batteries. The key issue in utilizing solid polymer electrolytes for high‐energy‐density lithium metal batteries is to balance the conflicting demands of superior processability, adequate ionic conductivity, and mechanical stability. Inspired by molecular structure design, a metal‐organic framework‐derived polyether poly(urethane urea) solid polymer electrolyte (denoted as ePU@H SPE) has been synthesized via a facile polycondensation method involving covalent crosslinking. The reduced crystallinity and numerous polar groups in ePU@H SPEs enhance Li salt dissociation and create efficient Li+ ion diffusion channels, yielding remarkable ionic conductivity (1.48 × 10−4 S cm−1). The polymer backbones, incorporating covalent bonds and dynamic hydrogen bonds, provide superb mechanical strength (5.12 GPa), high toughness (1240%), and excellent resilience, which suppress lithium dendrite growth and buffer electrode volume fluctuations during cycling. Leveraging these attributes, the well‐designed ePU@H SPE enables ultra‐high durability in lithium plating/stripping over 2300 h. Moreover, the integrated LFP|ePU@H|Li batteries, generating delicate electrode/electrolyte interfacial contact, deliver an exceptionally long lifespan (86% retention over 500 cycles at 1 C). Moreover, the LFP|ePU@H|Li pouch cell operates reliably even under severe deformation and external damage. Impressively, the stable cycling performance of full batteries incorporating high‐voltage LCO and high‐capacity S cathodes further verifies the significant potential of advanced ePU@H SPEs for practical applications.

Organic Cationic-Coordinated Perfluoropolymer Electrolytes with Strong Li+-Solvent Interaction for Solid State Li-Metal Batteries

Abstract:The practical application of solid-state polymer lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) is plagued by the inferior ionic conductivity of the applied polymer electrolytes (PEs), which is caused by the coupling of ion transport with the motion of polymer segments. Here, solvated molecules based on ionic liquid and lithium salt with strong Li+-solvent interaction are inserted into an elaborately engineered perfluoropolymer electrolyte via ionic dipole interaction, extensively facilitating Li+ transport and improving mechanical properties. The intensified formation of solvation structures of contact ion pairs and ionic aggregates, as well as the strong electron-withdrawal properties of the F atoms in perfluoropolymers, give the PE high electrochemical stability and excellent interfacial stability. As a result, Li||Li symmetric cells demonstrate a lifetime of 2500 h and an exceptionally high critical current density above 2.3 mA cm-2, Li||LiFePO4 batteries exhibit consistent cycling for 550 cycles at 10 C, and Li||uncoated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cells achieve 1000 cycles at 0.5 C with an average Coulombic efficiency of 98.45%, one of the best results reported to date based on PEs. Our discovery sheds fresh light on the targeted synergistic regulation of the electro-chemo-mechanical properties of PEs to extend the cycle life of LMBs.
A flexible solid polymer electrolyte enabled with lithiated zeolite for high performance lithium battery

Abstract:Solid-state lithium batteries using composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) have attracted much attention owing to their higher safety compared to liquid electrolytes and flexibility compared to ceramic electrolytes. However, their unsatisfactory lithium-ion conductivity still limits their development. Herein, a high ion conductive CPE with multiple continuous lithium pathways is designed. This new electrolyte consists of poly(vinylidene fluorideco-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and lithiated X type zeolite (Li-X), which possesses a high ionic conductivity (1.98 × 10 −4 S/cm), high lithium transference number , wide electrochemical window (4.7 V), and excellent stability against the lithium anode. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation confirms that the Lewis acid sites in zeolite can graft with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and PVDF-HFP chains, resulting in decreased crystallinity of polymer and providing rapid Li + transmission channels. When used in a full cell, the solid Li∣Li-X-3%∣LiFePO 4 cell displays excellent cycling stability and rate performance at room temperature and 60 °C. Furthermore, pouch cells with the Li-X-3% electrolyte exhibit brilliant safety under extreme conditions, such as folding and cutting. Thus, this proposed zeolite-PVDF-HFP CPE represents a promising potential in the application of making a safer, higher performing, and flexible solid-state lithium battery.

Solid electrolytes reinforced by infinite coordination polymer nano-network for dendrite-free lithium metal batteries

Abstract:As the demand for high energy-density and safe Li-based batteries, the development of composite solid polymer electrolytes (CSPEs) with high ionic conductivity and high electrochemical stability are significant. Herein, the amorphous infinite coordination polymer (ICP) nano-network of Ce-coordinate polyphenol ellagic acid (EACe2) is introduced into PEO matrix to achieve highly endurable Li metal batteries (LMBs). Different from conventional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with discrete crystalline grains, ICP network with high interconnectivity and self-assembly capability enables the better penetration effect and multi-scale interaction of filler in PEO. EACe2 nano-filler promotes the improvement of ionic conductivity and Li-ion transference number of CSPEs, as well as the construction of robust solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) with the concentration of LiF, Li2O and Li2S, leading to ultrastable and kinetically favorable Li/Li cells with dendrite-mitigated cycling over 8800 h. The low interfacial resistances (16 Ω cm2 and 20.5 Ω cm2 for CSPE-EACe2/Li and CSPE-EACe2/LiFePO4 respectively) can achieve highly reversible Li/LiFePO4 cells (with capacities of 102.6 mAh g−1 after 2000 cycles at 0.5 C and 103.2 mAh g−1 after 1200 cycles at 1 C). Abstract:In situ ring-opening polymerization of ether-based monomers has shown promising application in solid-state lithium metal batteries owing to their positive lithium compatibility, mild reaction conditions, and facile preparation. However, typical poly(1,3-dioxolane) (PDOL) based electrolyte still struggles with low ionic conductivity, narrow electrochemical window, and poor thermal stability, which greatly retard its further progress. Herein, we constructed a crosslinked PDOL semi-solid electrolyte initiated by a three-armed crosslinker and high voltage resistant fluorinated solvents, which shows favourable stability toward lithium metal (lithium plating/stripping stably operating for 2700 h at 0.2 mA cm −2 with no significant polarization growth) and a high electrochemical oxidation window of up to 4.6 V. A lithium metal coin cell using this crosslinked semi-solid electrolyte equipped with LFP expresses excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 88% for 1000 cycles at 1C. A 50 mA h pouch cell with an NCM811 cathode exhibited favourable working ability. Meanwhile, the crosslinked electrolyte demonstrated better solid-state characteristics and thermal stability compared with a long-chain electrolyte. This work provides a prospective reference for the application of ether-based electrolyte in high safety and high energy density lithium metal batteries.

Effect of Organic Functional Groups on Poly(ethylene Oxide) Electrolytes for High-Performance Solid-State Lithium-Metal Batteries

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes are anticipated to enhance safety in high-energy lithium (Li)-metal batteries, but their further application is hindered by low ionic conductivity and uncontrollable Li dendrite growth. Herein, we propose novel fillers consisting of organic hard particles, such as chitin, chitosan, and carboxylated chitosan, to investigate the effect of functional groups on poly(ethylene oxide)-based electrolytes. Specifically, organic fillers containing amino groups (-NH2) can greatly improve the ionic conductivity with decreased activation energy, elevate the Li-ion transference number, and broaden the electrochemical window, without causing additional parasitic reactions at the interface. Consequently, it achieved stable cycling for 1000 h at 0.2 mA cm(-2) and a maximum endurable current density up to 1 mA cm(-2) in symmetric Li/Li cells, along with homogeneous Li deposition and a stable interface. Furthermore, it shows superior C-rate performances and long-term cycling coupled with a LiFePO4 cathode, delivering a high specific capacity of 138.8 mAh cm(-2) after 400 cycles with 89.7% retention at 1C. Owing to environmental friendliness and abundant resources, organic fillers with amino functional groups have practical prospects for the design of composite polymer electrolytes.

Abstract:Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) with high security and mechanical flexibility are needed for all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries (LMBs). However, their practical application is hindered by the increasing demand for high-power and high-areal-energy-density storage solutions. Herein, a high-powered CPE relying on poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) as the polymer matrix is developed. The binding energy of Li+-PCL is predicted to be −130.163 kcal·mol–1 via density functional theory calculations, which implies a high dissociation of Li salts in the PCL matrix. The weak interactions between the Li+ and the polymer chains enable the CPEs with a high Li+ transfer number (t Li+) of 0.71. Besides, LiFePO4//Li batteries deliver a high capacity retention of 85% for over 600 cycles at 2.0C. This work demonstrates the tremendous potential of PCL-based CPEs in promoting the application of high-power-performance LMBs.

Abstract:Composite solid-state electrolytes with high structural strength and toughness are effective means to improve the safety and processability of solid-state batteries. However, due to the poor interface compatibility between polymers and inorganic electrolytes, the efficiency of lithium ion transport is affected. To address these issues, we utilized electrospinning technology to prepare highly tough polyacrylonitrile porous membranes. Subsequently, a rigid covalent organic framework electrolyte CPTP was polymerized in situ within the pores to fabricate a rigid and flexible dual-network polymer electrolyte (PAN/CPTP). Experimental results indicate that the carbon–hydrogen compound CPTP interacts with PAN through hydrogen bonding, thus enhancing the interface compatibility of the composite electrolyte, with a resulting mechanical strength as high as 15.5 MPa. The optimized interface eliminates the Li + transport barriers between the PAN and CPTP networks, thus increasing the concentration of free lithium ions in the electrolyte and reducing the lithium ion transport barrier. The lithium ion conductivity (0.94 × 10 −3 S cm −1 ) and Li ion transfer selectivity ( t Li + = 0.89) of the composite electrolyte were significantly improved at 30 °C, demonstrating excellent stability towards high-voltage cathodes and lithium metal. Thus, Li//PAN/CPTP//Li symmetric batteries could operate stably for 4000 hours, and NCM811//PAN/CPTP//Li full cells could be cycled stably over 200 times at 4.5 V and 30 °C with 85% capacity retention. This rigid and flexible polymer electrolyte film is easy to prepare over a large area, and the assembled flexible pouch cell has high flexibility and safety.

Cation Vacancy-Boosted Lewis Acid–Base Interactions in a Polymer Electrolyte for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Polymer electrolytes have gained extensive attention owing to their high flexibility, easy processibility, intrinsic safety, and compatibility with current fabrication technologies. However, their low ionic conductivity and lithium transference number have largely impaired their real application. Herein, novel two-dimensional clay nanosheets with abundant cation vacancies are created and incorporated in a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)-blended polymer-based electrolyte. The characterization and simulation results reveal that the cation vacancies not only provide lithium ions with additional Lewis acid-base interaction sites but also protect the PEO chains from being oxidized by excess lithium ions, which enhances the dissociation of lithium salts and the hopping mechanism of lithium ions. Benefiting from this, the polymer electrolyte shows a high ionic conductivity of 2.6 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 27 °C, a large Li+ transference number up to 0.77, and a wide electrochemical stability window of 4.9 V. Furthermore, the LiFePO4∥Li coin cell with such a polymer electrolyte delivers a high specific capacity of 145 mA h g-1 with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 99.9% and a capacity retention of 97.3% after 100 cycles at ambient temperature, as well as a superior rate performance. When pairing with high-voltage cathodes LiCoO2 and LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4, the corresponding cells also exhibit favorable electrochemical stability and a high capacity retention. In addition, the LiFePO4∥Li pouch cells display high safety even under rigorous conditions including corner-cut, bending, and nail-penetration.

Abstract:Solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries constructed by in‐situ solidification of cyclic ether, are considered to be a critical strategy for the next generation of solid‐state batteries with high energy density and safety. However, the poor thermal/electrochemical stability of linear polyethers and severe interfacial reactions limit its further development. Herein, in‐situ ring‐opening hybrid crosslinked polymerization is proposed for organic/inorganic hybrid polymer electrolyte (HCPE) with superior ionic conductivity of 2.22×10−3 S cm−1 at 30°C, ultrahigh Li+ transference number of 0.88, and wide electrochemical stability window of 5.2 V. These allow highly stable lithium stripping/plating cycling for over 1000 h at 1 mA cm−2, which also reveal a well‐defined interfacial stabilization mechanism. Thus HCPE endows assembled solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries with excellent long‐cycle performance over 600 cycles at 2 C (25°C) and superior capacity retention of 92.1%. More importantly, our proposed non‐combustible HCPE opens up a new frontier to promote the practical application of high safety and high energy density solid‐state batteries via in‐situ solidification. Abstract:Replacing flammable liquid electrolytes with solid polymer electrolytes is a promising route to improve safety of lithium (Li)-metal batteries. However, developing a suitable high-performance electrolyte with both high ionic conductivity and interface stability against electrodes remains as a challenge. Herein, we design a poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC)/poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) [P(VDF-HFP)]-based asymmetric solid electrolyte with a 3D blow-spun Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) framework. The controllable degradation of PPC facilitates the wettability and stability between the electrolyte and Li metal. The P(VDF-HFP) with good electrochemical stability is used to match with cathode. With the support of the 3D LLZO Li-ion conductor, the electrolyte displays high ionic conductivity (4.9 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at room temperature). The Li parallel to Li symmetric cells assembled with this electrolyte show a long cycling life of more than 2700 h at 100 mA cm(-2). The electrolyte also delivers an excellent cycling performance in solid-state LiFePO4 parallel to Li batteries (300 cycles with a capacity retention of 91.3%). (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd.
