Abstract:The preparation of SA508 Grade 3 steel was innovatively realized based on laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). On this basis, the influence of processing parameters on the microstructure as well as the mechanical properties of SA508 Grade 3 steel was studied. The effect of the high cooling rate brought about by LPBF on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the specimens was investigated. Defects such as unfused powders and lack-of-fusion defects were observed in specimens prepared at excessively low volumetric energy density. Defects in specimens prepared at excessively high volumetric energy density were predominantly keyhole-shaped defects. The range of the volumetric energy density for obtaining defect-free specimens with a high relative density (99.4 ± 0.3%) was determined to be 111–133 J/mm 3 . The cooling rate provided by LPBF is much higher than the critical cooling rate for martensitic transformation, resulting in a uniform distribution of fine martensite with an average grain size of about 3 μm in the specimens. The strength of the specimens reached 1.041 GPa, which was much higher than that of the specimens prepared by the traditional process. The high strength of the specimens can be attributed to the Hall–Petch relationship provided by the fine grains. The proposed strategy in this work provides a new technical approach for the additive manufacturing of a high-performance low-carbon and low-alloy steel.
