Abstract:Herein we demonstrate the synthesis of a new out-of-plane ordered double-transition-metal MAX phase known as Mo2VAlC2. Annealing the elemental powder mixture at 1540 °C with 2.0Mo: 1.0 V: 1.3Al: 1.8C results in a high yield of 91.2 wt% for Mo2VAlC2. The crystal structure of Mo2VAlC2 is determined using Rietveld refinement of powder XRD, and which crystalizes into a hexagonal lattice structure with space group P63/mmc. Employing the double spherical aberration corrected transmission electron microscopy, we confirm its chemically ordering behavior of one V layer sandwiched between two Mo layers. Additionally, its two-dimensional derivative Mo2VC2Tx MXene has been successfully realized by etching the Al layer of Mo2VAlC2 with hydrofluoric acid. The chemical composition and microstructure of Mo2VC2Tx are inspected with SEM and EDX. The resulting multilayer and intercalated Mo2VC2Tx exhibit the characteristic accordion-like and paper-like appearances, respectively. This work further expands the diversity of chemically ordered double-transition-metal MAX and MXene families.

Abstract:MXenes have been studied as promising 2D materials for various applications such as semiconductors, energy storage, supercapacitors, electromagnetic shielding, sensors, batteries, and adsorbents. In particular, 2D high-entropy MXenes are expected to improve the physical or chemical properties of MXenes through the combination of various transition metal compositions. However, it is difficult to experimentally investigate novel high-entropy MXene compositions owing to the time and cost limitations. In this study, using first-principles calculations, the synthesizability of high-entropy MXenes was determined by evaluating the thermodynamic stability and exfoliation possibility of high-entropy MAX phases, which are precursors of high-entropy MXenes. High-entropy MXenes were synthesized from Al-based and few-layered HE-MAX phases composed of Ti, Nb, and Ta. Additionally, the thermodynamic stability and exfoliation possibility of high-entropy MAX phases are highly correlated with the lattice distortion factors (the standard deviation of bond length and differences in atomic radii) and the differences in the bond lengths of M-A and M-X, respectively. Out of 756 high-entropy MAX phase candidates, 146 high-entropy MXene compositions were estimated to be synthesizable. Furthermore, we successfully synthesized novel high-entropy MXenes, (TiVNbTa)2C and (TiVNbHfTa)2C, which are expected to have high synthesizability according to our first-principles calculations.

Abstract:This study delves into the theoretical exploration of the structural and electronic characteristics of 2D monolayer MXenes (M n +1 X n ) by the elimination of Al layers from their corresponding MAX-phases, M n +1 AX n ( n = 1–3), through meticulous first-principles calculations. The study encompasses structural optimization and the determination of key ground state properties, including equilibrium lattice constants, energy ( E 0 ), and volume ( V 0 ) of both MXenes and their corresponding MAX phases. Consequently, we investigated the comparative study of the electronic properties of M n +1 AlC n (M = Ti, V, or Cr) ( n = 1–3) and their MXenes for the first time by calculating the Bader charge analysis (MAX phase only) and the density of states (DOS). The analysis extends to the density of states and Bader charge assessments, facilitating a comprehensive comparison. Remarkably, the MXene monolayer showcases an elevated density of states at the Fermi level compared to its MAX phase counterpart. This disparity stems from the redistribution of 3d electrons near the Fermi level following the removal of Al layers, consequently enhancing electronic conductivity. Cohesive energy and formation energy calculations affirm the structural stability of these compounds. Furthermore, our computed values are meticulously cross-referenced with existing experimental and theoretical data, stimulating the reliability and significance of our findings.

Abstract:In this work, Mo, Y, Al, and C were used as raw materials to synthesize a novel (Mo2/3Y1/3)(2)AlC MAX phase by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1550 degrees C, and the corresponding accordion-like MXene was successfully obtained with a milder chemical etching method. The chemical composition and microstructure of the materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (DES). The final product was Mo1.33CT2 MXene with functional groups on the surface. At the same time, the electronic structure and electronic properties of the novel (Mo2/3Y1/3)(2)AlC MAX phase and the corresponding Mo1.33CT2 MXene were studied by the first-principles density functional theory. The calculated results show that all of them exhibit metallic properties, which are expected to be applied for energy storage, biosensors and electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Recently, a number of graphene-like early transition metal carbides and nitrides named as MXenes were fabricated by exfoliating MAX phases in hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. From experiments results and theory calculations, MXenes are promising anode materials in batteries as well as in metal-ion capacitors. To the best of our knowledge, experimental or calculated evidence has been supported the existence of more than 70 MAX phases members. Therefore, many counterparts MXene may be exist. Herein, employing density functional theory (DFT) computations, we have systematically examined the relative stability, structure and electronic properties of a series of two-dimensional metal carbides and nitrides including M 2 C (M=Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Hf, Mo and Ta), M 2 N (M=Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Hf), M 3 C 2 (M=Ti, V, Nb, Ta), Ti 3 N 2 , M 4 C 3 (M=Ti, V, Nb, Ta) and Ti 4 N 3 . The results demonstrate that all MXenes are metallic and have the similarly electronic structure with bulk transition metal carbides and nitrides, indicating that MXene may have superior catalysis and adsorption instead of expensive pure transition metal.
Achieving Macroscopic V4C3Tx MXene by Selectively Etching Al from V4AlC3 Single Crystals.

Abstract:Hexagon-like MAX-phase V4AlC3 single crystals grown by a high-temperature flux method were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). We report, for the first time, the first-order Raman spectra (RS) of V4AlC3 single crystals experimentally and theoretically. Via the combination of the results of thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, XRD, FE-SEM, and EDX, the oxidation performance and mechanism of V4AlC3 single crystals between 300 and 1473 K in air were clarified. Importantly, we carefully investigated the room-temperature corrosion behaviors of V4AlC3 single crystals in concentrated acids [HCl, H2SO4, hydrofluoric acid (HF), and HNO3] and alkalis (NaOH and KOH). V4AlC3 single crystals are stable in concentrated HCl, H2SO4, and NaOH but unstable and even dissolved completely in concentrated KOH and HNO3. In particular, our XRD, RS, FE-SEM, and EDX results have confirmed that HF can dissolve the Al layers of V4AlC3 single crystals but cannot corrode V4C3 layers at room temperature, which eventually led to the formation of macroscopic V4C3Tx MXene. This reported approach of macro-sized V4C3Tx MXene can be adapted for obtaining other macroscopic MXenes and will inspire plenty of theoretical and experimental investigations to explore their intrinsic nature and applications, especially for electronic and photonic applications.
Control of spintronic and electronic properties of bimetallic and vacancy-ordered vanadium carbide MXenes via surface functionalization

Abstract:MXenes are 2D transition metal carbides with high potential for overcoming limitations of conventional two-dimensional electronics. In this context, various MXenes have shown magnetic properties suitable for applications in spintronics, yet the number of MXenes reported so far is far smaller than their parental MAX phases. Therefore, we have studied the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of bimetallic and vacancy-ordered MXenes derived from a new $(V_{2/3}Zr_{1/3})_2AlC $ MAX phase to assess whether MXene exfoliation would return stable magnetic materials. In particular, we have investigated the properties of pristine and surface-functionalized $(V_{2/3}Zr_{1/3})_2CX_2$ bimetallic and $(V_{2/3} \square_{1/3})_2CX2$ vacancy-ordered MXenes with X = O, F and OH. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that modifying the MXene stoichiometry and/or MXene surface functionalization changes MXene properties. After testing all possible combinations of metallic motifs and functionalization, we identified $V_{2/3}Zr_{1/3})_2CX_2$, $(V_{2/3}\square_{1/3})_2CF_2$ and $(V_{2/3}\square_{1/3})_2C(OH)_2$ as stable structures. Among them, $(V_{2/3}Zr_{1/3})_2CO_2$ MXene is predicted to be an FM intrinsic half-semiconductor with a remarkably high Curie temperature ($T_C$)) of 270 K. The $(V_{2/3}Zr_{1/3})_2C(OH)_2$ MXene exhibits a rather low work function (WF) (1.37 eV) and is thus a promising candidate for ultra-low work function electron emitters. Conversely, the $(V_{2/3}\square_{1/3})_2CF_2$ MXene has a rather high WF and hence can be used as a hole injector for Schottky-barrier-free contact applications. Overall, our proof-of-concept study shows that theoretical predictions of MXene exfoliation and properties support further experimental research towards developing spintronics devices.

Abstract:Frequency calibration of a 1.3-microm diode laser spectrometer was carried out with a simultaneously recording spectrum of the iodine molecule in the visible region using internal second harmonics from the diode laser itself. An absolute accuracy of 0.002 cm(-1) was achieved with the frequency standard spectrum of the iodine molecule in the visible region and frequency markers from an étalon. Several atomic and molecular transitions in the near-infrared region were remeasured using this new frequency reference.

Abstract:Oxygen substitution in the X lattice of MAX phases causes lattice contractions and lowers the high‐temperature oxidation resistance. MAX phases, ternary transition metal carbides and nitrides, represent one of the largest families of layered materials. They also serve as precursors to MXenes, two‐dimensional (2D) carbides and nitrides. The possibility of oxygen substitution in the carbon sublattice, forming oxycarbide MAX phases and MXenes, was recently reported using secondary ion mass spectrometry. However, while the effect of oxygen substitution on the properties of MXenes was investigated, little is known about its effect on the properties of MAX phases. Here, we explore the influence of process parameters (e.g., particle size, synthesis temperature, annealing time, etc.) and oxygen presence in the lattice on the oxidation resistance of Ti3AlC2 MAX phase powders. We show that X‐ray diffraction measurements can identify oxygen substitution and assist in selecting MAX precursors to synthesize stable and highly conductive MXenes. Eliminating the substitutional oxygen from the MAX phase lattice increases the onset of oxidation by 400°C, from approximately 490 to 890°C. Finally, we discuss the impact of oxygen substitution in the MAX phases on the synthesis of MXenes and their resulting properties.

Systematic Study of the Multiple Variables Involved in V2AlC Acid-Based Etching Processes, a Key Step in MXene Synthesis

Abstract:The realization of the broad range of application of MXenes relies on the successful and reproducible synthesis of quality materials of tailored properties. To date, most MXenes have been produced making use of acid-based etching methods, yet an in-depth understanding of etching processes is lacking. Herein, we have engaged in a comprehensive study of the multiple variables involved in the synthesis of V2CTx with focus on the properties of etched materials. Two main sets of experiments were considered, each using a different V2AlC precursor and a range of synthesis variables including reaction time and temperature, mixing rate, and type of acid. Correlations of synthesis conditions-materials properties were investigated using a broad range of characterization techniques including analytical methods, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Findings indicated the crucial relevance of properties of the MAX precursor such as elemental composition, particle size, and crystal structure on etching processes and properties of etched materials. Particularly, depending on the MAX precursor, two etching patterns were identified, core-shell and plate-by-plate, the latter describing a more efficient etching. Combined studies of elemental composition, crystal structure, and yield quantification allowed us to evaluate the effectiveness of etching processes. XRD studies revealed key crystal-structure-type of acid correlations showing advantages of using a HF/HCl mix over only HF. Analytical methods XRD and XPS delivered insights into undergoing chemical processes and their influence on bulk and surface chemistry of etched materials. The relevance for reaction kinetics of highly correlated variables such as reaction vessel dimensions, mixing efficiency, and reaction temperature was recognized. For the first time, a MXene synthesis has been investigated comprehensively highlighting its multivariable nature and the high variable intercorrelation, opening up venues for further investigation on MAX and MXene synthesis.
Tailored synthesis approach of (Mo2/3Y1/3)2AlC i-MAX and its two-dimensional derivative Mo1.33CTz MXene: enhancing the yield, quality, and performance in supercapacitor applications

Abstract:A vacancy-ordered MXene, Mo1.33CTz, obtained from the selective etching of Al and Sc from the parent i-MAX phase (Mo2/3Sc1/3)2AlC has previously shown excellent properties for supercapacitor applications. Attempts to synthesize the same MXene from another precursor, (Mo2/3Y1/3)2AlC, have not been able to match its forerunner. Herein, we show that the use of an AlY2.3 alloy instead of elemental Al and Y for the synthesis of (Mo2/3Y1/3)2AlC i-MAX, results in a close to 70% increase in sample purity due to the suppression of the main secondary phase, Mo3Al2C. Furthermore, through a modified etching procedure, we obtain a Mo1.33CTz MXene of high structural quality and improve the yield by a factor of 6 compared to our previous efforts. Free-standing films show high volumetric (1308 F cm-3) and gravimetric (436 F g-1) capacitances and a high stability (98% retention) at the level of, or even beyond, those reported for the Mo1.33CTz MXene produced from the Sc-based i-MAX. These results are of importance for the realization of high quality MXenes through use of more abundant elements (Y vs. Sc), while also reducing waste (impurity) material and facilitating the synthesis of a high-performance material for applications.
Alkali cation stabilization of defects in 2D MXenes at ambient and elevated temperatures

Abstract:Transition metal carbides have been adopted in energy storage, conversion, and extreme environment applications. Advancement in their 2D counterparts, known as MXenes, enables the design of unique structures at the ~1 nm thickness scale. Alkali cations have been essential in MXenes manufacturing processing, storage, and applications, however, exact interactions of these cations with MXenes are not fully understood. In this study, using Ti3C2Tx, Mo2TiC2Tx, and Mo2Ti2C3Tx MXenes, we present how transition metal vacancy sites are occupied by alkali cations, and their effect on MXene structure stabilization to control MXene’s phase transition. We examine this behavior using in situ high-temperature x-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy, ex situ techniques such as atomic-layer resolution secondary ion mass spectrometry, and density functional theory simulations. In MXenes, this represents an advance in fundamentals of cation interactions on their 2D basal planes for MXenes stabilizations and applications. Broadly, this study demonstrates a potential new tool for ideal phase-property relationships of ceramics at the atomic scale.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have gained popularity in fields such as energy storage, catalysis, and electromagnetic interference due to their diverse elemental compositions and variable surface terminations (T). Generally, the synthesis of MXene materials involves etching the weak M-A metallic bonds in the ternary layered transition metal carbides and nitrides (MAX phase) using HF acid or Lewis acid molten salts, while the strong M-X covalent bonds preserve the two-dimensional framework structure of MXenes. On the other hand, the MAX phase material family also includes a significant class of members where the A site is occupied by non-metal main group elements (such as sulfur and phosphorus), in which both M-A and M-X are covalent bond-type sublayers. The aforementioned etching methods cannot be used to synthesize MXene materials from these parent phases. In this work, we discovered that the covalent bond-type M-A and M-X sublayers exhibit different reactivity with some inorganic materials in a high-temperature molten state. By utilizing this difference in reactivity, we can structurally modify these covalent sublayers, allowing for the substitution of elements at the X site (from B to Se, S, P, C) and converting non-metal A site atoms in non-van der Waals (non-vdW) MAX phases into surface atoms in vdW layered materials. This results in a family of early transition metal Xide chalcogenides (TMXCs) that exhibit lattice characteristics of both MXenes and transition metal chalcogenides. Using electron-donor chemical scissors, these TMXC layered materials can be further exfoliated into monolayer nanosheets. The atomic configurations of each atom in these monolayer TMXCs are the same as those of conventional MXenes, but the oxidation states of the M-site atoms can be regulated by both X-site atoms and intercalated cations.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and nitrides, known as MXenes, are a fast-growing family of 2D materials. MXenes 2D flakes have n + 1 (n = 1-4) atomic layers of transition metals interleaved by carbon/nitrogen layers, but to-date remain limited in composition to one or two transition metals. In this study, by implementing four transition metals, we report the synthesis of multi-principal-element high-entropy M4C3Tx MXenes. Specifically, we introduce two high-entropy MXenes, TiVNbMoC3Tx and TiVCrMoC3Tx, as well as their precursor TiVNbMoAlC3 and TiVCrMoAlC3 high-entropy MAX phases. We used a combination of real and reciprocal space characterization (X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy) to establish the structure, phase purity, and equimolar distribution of the four transition metals in high-entropy MAX and MXene phases. We use first-principles calculations to compute the formation energies and explore synthesizability of these high-entropy MAX phases. We also show that when three transition metals are used instead of four, under similar synthesis conditions to those of the four-transition-metal MAX phase, two different MAX phases can be formed (i.e., no pure single-phase forms). This finding indicates the importance of configurational entropy in stabilizing the desired single-phase high-entropy MAX over multiphases of MAX, which is essential for the synthesis of phase-pure high-entropy MXenes. The synthesis of high-entropy MXenes significantly expands the compositional variety of the MXene family to further tune their properties, including electronic, magnetic, electrochemical, catalytic, high temperature stability, and mechanical behavior.
Chelation-Based Route to Aluminum-Free Layered Transition Metal Carbides (MXenes)

Abstract:MXenes are of much interest because of their electrochemical, electronic, and surface chemical properties that arise from their structure and stoichiometry. The integrity and the nature of the terminal groups on the basal planes of MXene sheets depend strongly on the method used to etch the parent MAX (M = transition metal, A = Al, X = C, N, B) compound. Aluminum removal typically involves a high concentration of aqueous HF, HCl/LiF mixtures, or fluoride solutions of strong acids. HF etching is problematic because it leaves insoluble AlF3 in the product, degrades the crystallinity of the nanosheets, and results in the termination of the basal planes with F, O, or OH groups. Here, we demonstrate the use of HF at a low concentration in tandem with a chelating agent, N,N'-dihydroxyoctanediamide (suberohydroxamic acid), to selectively etch the archetypical MAX compound Ti3AlC2 at room temperature. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of the etched materials shows that the carbide nature of bonding in the parent MAX structure is retained in the MXene layers. The stability of the MXene in aqueous suspensions is also significantly improved relative to MXene products made by etching in concentrated HF solutions.

Exfoliation behavior and superior photothermal conversion performance of MXenes beyond Ti3C2T

Abstract:Two dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes) have attracted significant interest due to their unique layer structure, chemical diversity and superior physiochemical performances. However, most studies have focused on Ti3C2T x , and the synthesis process and photothermal conversion capability of other MXenes remain unclear. In this work, we have systematically investigated the exfoliation behavior of six different MXenes, including mono-transition-metal (Ti3C2T x , V2CT x , and Nb2CT x ) and double-transition-metal (TiVCT x , TiNbCT x , and NbVCT x ) MXenes derived from MAX phases, integrated with their photothermal conversion performance by combining experimental and theoretical studies. The phase, morphology, composition and surface groups of the different MXenes have been analyzed using XRD, SEM, XPS, and HRTEM techniques. Our results indicate a systematic variation in etching difficulty from difficult to easy, as Nb2AlC > NbVAlC > V2AlC > TiNbAlC > TiVAlC > Ti3AlC2, which correlates with the chemical composition and etching duration. Furthermore, the exfoliation factor m from density functional theory calculations reveals that the bond energies of M−A bonds are much weaker than M−X bonds in MAX phases, which agrees well with the experimental results. Interestingly that, all the obtained MXenes exhibit remarkable photothermal conversion performance with fast response, where the MXenes beyond Ti3C2T x , such as V2CT x , NbVCT x , Nb2CT x , TiVCT x , and TiNbCT x , display higher saturation temperature of 95, 88, 81, 78, and 71 °C, respectively, than that of Ti3C2T x (65 °C). These findings could potentially facilitate the efficient design and development of diverse MXene materials with outstanding photothermal conversion performance for applications in wearable devices, biomedical technology and solar water desalination.

Abstract:As one of Mn+1AXn (MAX) family, where M is an early transition metal, A is an A-group element, and X is either C or N and n = 1, 2, and 3, Ti2AlC is a promising candidate material for nuclear energy industry due to its unique features such as elastically stiff, good electrical conductivity, high thermal conductivity and excellent resistance to high temperature oxidation and corrosion. However, the mechanical and thermal properties of Ti2AlC compound are expected to be improved. For the first time, the effect of V content on the structural, elastic, electronic and thermodynamic properties of the (Ti1-xVx)2AlC (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00) solid solutions was examined systematically and their compression behavior under 50 GPa was studied using density functional theory (DFT). The optimized lattice constants agree well with the experimental values and decrease with the increase of V content. The (Ti1-xVx)2AlC solid solutions are compressible along both a and c directions in the pressure range of 0–50 GPa. Calculated elastic constants verified mechanical stability under 50 GPa. The constant C 44 , directly related to the valence electron concentration, is found to increase with increasing V content. The bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus and Vickers hardness are found to reach a significant maximum value respectively when V content is 75%, and the reason is studied. The shear anisotropy factors show that (Ti1-xVx)2AlC compounds containing Ti and V are more anisotropic than Ti2AlC, and they have a tendency towards improved ductility. The metallic behaviors of (Ti1-xVx)2AlC solid solutions are confirmed by analyzing the electronic band structures and density of states. The thermal properties imply that the (Ti0.25V0.75)2AlC is expected to be more thermally conductive due to its highest Debye temperature of 771K of the five compounds. In addition, the bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus and Debye temperature increase with the increase of pressure under 50 GPa. The results reveal that the mechanical properties of Ti2AlC are improved much better than the thermal properties by the inclusion of V. Especially, the (Ti0.25V0.75)2AlC MAX phase in (Ti1-xVx)2AlC solid solutions is probably the most suitable candidate material for mechanical and thermal applications at high temperature.

Abstract:A relatively low-temperature molten salt assisted synthesis is developed to prepare MAX phase solid solutions in the Ti 2 AlC–V 2 AlC system, to be used as precursors for the preparation of heterometallic MXenes Ti 2 – x V x C. When the synthesis temperature is 1000°С, Ti 1 V 1 AlC, Ti 0.5 V 1.5 AlC, and Ti 0.2 V 1.8 AlC samples (despite the formation of a MAX phase and a systematic shift of reflection (002) in response to progressing vanadium-for-titanium substitution) typically feature appreciable amounts of impurity phases, namely Al 2 O 3 and vanadium (their reflections are partially overlapping). An increase in synthetic temperature to 1100°С appreciably reduces the amount of impurities and, in a Ti 1 V 1 AlC sample, decreases the unit cell parameter a , which yet far exceeds the calculated and published values (while the parameter c corresponds with those values). Thermal analysis of Ti 2 AlC, Ti 1 V 1 AlC, and V 2 AlC samples in the range 20–1000°С shows that the oxidation resistance decreases in the progress of vanadium-for-titanium substitution in a MAX phase. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are used to study the microstructure of the prepared Ti 2 AlC and V 2 AlC phases.
