Abstract:In this study, highly pure Mo2CTx MXene was successfully synthesized from Mo2Ga2C by etching in hydrothermal conditions for 24 h at 140–180°C. The etching solutions were lithium fluoride (LiF), sodium fluoride (NaF), potassium fluoride (KF) or ammonium fluoride (NH4F) mixed with hydrochloric acid (HCl). The temperature to obtain pure Mo2CTx MXene in NH4F + HCl solution was 140°C, lower than that in other etching solutions. The thickness of as-prepared monolayer Mo2CTx nanosheet was measured to be 1.5 ± 0.3 nm by atomic force microscope. From thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis, Mo2CTx MXene was found to be stable in argon atmosphere at a temperature of up to 500°C. As the temperature increased, Mo2CTx MXene gradually transformed, and β-Mo2C/MoC/Mo3C2 was eventually formed to coexist with Mo2CTx MXene at 700°C. In air atmosphere, Mo2CTx MXene was stable at 200°C. At 590°C, Mo2CTx MXene was completely oxidized to MoO3.

Abstract:Frequency calibration of a 1.3-microm diode laser spectrometer was carried out with a simultaneously recording spectrum of the iodine molecule in the visible region using internal second harmonics from the diode laser itself. An absolute accuracy of 0.002 cm(-1) was achieved with the frequency standard spectrum of the iodine molecule in the visible region and frequency markers from an étalon. Several atomic and molecular transitions in the near-infrared region were remeasured using this new frequency reference.

Abstract:The realization of the broad range of application of MXenes relies on the successful and reproducible synthesis of quality materials of tailored properties. To date, most MXenes have been produced making use of acid-based etching methods, yet an in-depth understanding of etching processes is lacking. Herein, we have engaged in a comprehensive study of the multiple variables involved in the synthesis of V2CTx with focus on the properties of etched materials. Two main sets of experiments were considered, each using a different V2AlC precursor and a range of synthesis variables including reaction time and temperature, mixing rate, and type of acid. Correlations of synthesis conditions-materials properties were investigated using a broad range of characterization techniques including analytical methods, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Findings indicated the crucial relevance of properties of the MAX precursor such as elemental composition, particle size, and crystal structure on etching processes and properties of etched materials. Particularly, depending on the MAX precursor, two etching patterns were identified, core-shell and plate-by-plate, the latter describing a more efficient etching. Combined studies of elemental composition, crystal structure, and yield quantification allowed us to evaluate the effectiveness of etching processes. XRD studies revealed key crystal-structure-type of acid correlations showing advantages of using a HF/HCl mix over only HF. Analytical methods XRD and XPS delivered insights into undergoing chemical processes and their influence on bulk and surface chemistry of etched materials. The relevance for reaction kinetics of highly correlated variables such as reaction vessel dimensions, mixing efficiency, and reaction temperature was recognized. For the first time, a MXene synthesis has been investigated comprehensively highlighting its multivariable nature and the high variable intercorrelation, opening up venues for further investigation on MAX and MXene synthesis.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) V2C MXene has fascinating potential for use as electrodes in high-energy-density supercapacitors because of its excellent electrical conductivity and large specific surface area. However, it is not feasible to synthesize V2C by etching vanadium carbon aluminide (V2AlC) with hydrofluoric acid, which is commonly used for preparing other MXenes. In this work, a modified method is developed for synthesizing high-quality 2D V2C. A mixture of sodium fluoride (NaF) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) was used as the etching agent, where V2AlC can be gently etched by a hydrothermal reactor-assisted method. As electrode materials for supercapacitors, V2C shows the characteristics of electric double layer capacitance. The electrochemical results show high specific capacitance (223.5 F/g in 1 M Na2SO4 at a current density of 100 mA/g) and good cycling stability (the capacitance retention rate can be maintained at 94.7% after 5000 cycles). This work provides a new method for the synthesis of high-quality V2C for application in related fields.

Abstract:A novel high-purity V2C MXene two-dimensional carbide, was successfully synthesized by etching V2AlC with sodium fluoride and hydrochloric acid at 90 degrees C for 72 h. From the analysis of X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the purity of as-synthesized V2C MXene was > 90 wt% with a few impurities of Na5Al3F14 and V2AlC. The V2C MXene made by this method was much purer than those made by HF etching at room temperature. The as-prepared V2C MXene showed excellent electrochemical properties as anode of lithium-ion batteries. The capacity can be 260 mAh g(-1) if discharged under 370 mA g(-1). The capacity was increased with charge cycles at high charge rate (500 mA g(-1)). It was suggested that V2C with high purity can be promising anode material with excellent performance. Thermal self-crosslink after etching for regulated preparation of Ti3C2 type MXene membrane and its preliminary gas separation

Abstract:We present an innovative methodology for the synthesis of MXene membranes through a dual-stage process involving etching and subsequent thermal self-crosslinking. A molar ratio of 1 (Al3+):9 (F-) using HCl/LiF was employed to convert raw Ti3AlC2 (MAX phase) into MXene within 48 h at 40 °C. This procedure predominantly yielded monolayers distinguished by diameters exceeding 500 nm, elevated crystallinity and a high overall yield. Advanced characterization techniques, including FESEM, TEM, HRTEM, AFM, XPS, and FTIR, were utilized. Instrumental analysis confirmed the formation of MXene exhibiting a single-flake morphology with diameters exceeding 500 nm. These monolayers were intact and continuous, with smooth peripheries and a uniform thickness of 2.1 nm. The surfaces were predominantly composed of carbon (C), oxygen (O), and titanium (Ti) atoms, interconnected by chemical bonds such as C-Ti-O, C-Ti-OH, C-C, C-O, and Ti-O. In the subsequent phase, vacuum filtration facilitated the assembly of a self-supporting MXene membrane. Thermal treatment at 170 °C for 30 h resulted in the reinforcement of C-Ti-O bonds within the nanosheets, increasing their prevalence to 43.14 % and 19.47 %, respectively. This thermal regulation reduced the interlayer d-spacing from 4.33 to 3.54 Å, which significantly improved the gas separation efficiency beyond the Knudsen diffusion limit, as demonstrated by the αH2/CF4 value exceeding 23.0.

Abstract:Hexagon-like MAX-phase V4AlC3 single crystals grown by a high-temperature flux method were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). We report, for the first time, the first-order Raman spectra (RS) of V4AlC3 single crystals experimentally and theoretically. Via the combination of the results of thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, XRD, FE-SEM, and EDX, the oxidation performance and mechanism of V4AlC3 single crystals between 300 and 1473 K in air were clarified. Importantly, we carefully investigated the room-temperature corrosion behaviors of V4AlC3 single crystals in concentrated acids [HCl, H2SO4, hydrofluoric acid (HF), and HNO3] and alkalis (NaOH and KOH). V4AlC3 single crystals are stable in concentrated HCl, H2SO4, and NaOH but unstable and even dissolved completely in concentrated KOH and HNO3. In particular, our XRD, RS, FE-SEM, and EDX results have confirmed that HF can dissolve the Al layers of V4AlC3 single crystals but cannot corrode V4C3 layers at room temperature, which eventually led to the formation of macroscopic V4C3Tx MXene. This reported approach of macro-sized V4C3Tx MXene can be adapted for obtaining other macroscopic MXenes and will inspire plenty of theoretical and experimental investigations to explore their intrinsic nature and applications, especially for electronic and photonic applications.
The fabrication of Ti3C2 and Ti3CN MXenes by electrochemical etching

Abstract:2D MXenes are well-known for their outstanding performance in electrochemical energy storage and many other applications owing to their high conductivity and specific surface area. An obstacle to the wider synthesis of MXenes for research and industrial applications is the use of hazardous hydrofluoric acid (HF) during their synthesis. Herein, we developed the electrochemical etching process for the synthesis of Ti3C2 and Ti3CN MXenes by using aqueous tetrafluoroboric acid as the electrolyte, thus only involving a very low concentration of HF. The effect of electrical potential and temperature on the etching rate is studied and compared to chemical etching with HBF4. A mechanism based on the selective anodic dissolution of aluminium from the Ti3AlC2 and Ti3AlCN with the tetrafluoroborate ion is proposed. The MXene formation was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The MXene flakes from the electrochemical etching process have larger lateral dimensions compared to chemically etched MXene flakes as a result of the suppression of the HF decomposition and rapid etching rate. The electrodes of lithium-ion supercapacitors made from electrochemically etched Ti3C2 and Ti3CN exhibited cyclic performance and rate capabilities comparable to HF-etched MXenes.

Abstract:MXenes are 2D transition metal carbides with high potential for overcoming limitations of conventional two-dimensional electronics. In this context, various MXenes have shown magnetic properties suitable for applications in spintronics, yet the number of MXenes reported so far is far smaller than their parental MAX phases. Therefore, we have studied the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of bimetallic and vacancy-ordered MXenes derived from a new $(V_{2/3}Zr_{1/3})_2AlC $ MAX phase to assess whether MXene exfoliation would return stable magnetic materials. In particular, we have investigated the properties of pristine and surface-functionalized $(V_{2/3}Zr_{1/3})_2CX_2$ bimetallic and $(V_{2/3} \square_{1/3})_2CX2$ vacancy-ordered MXenes with X = O, F and OH. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that modifying the MXene stoichiometry and/or MXene surface functionalization changes MXene properties. After testing all possible combinations of metallic motifs and functionalization, we identified $V_{2/3}Zr_{1/3})_2CX_2$, $(V_{2/3}\square_{1/3})_2CF_2$ and $(V_{2/3}\square_{1/3})_2C(OH)_2$ as stable structures. Among them, $(V_{2/3}Zr_{1/3})_2CO_2$ MXene is predicted to be an FM intrinsic half-semiconductor with a remarkably high Curie temperature ($T_C$)) of 270 K. The $(V_{2/3}Zr_{1/3})_2C(OH)_2$ MXene exhibits a rather low work function (WF) (1.37 eV) and is thus a promising candidate for ultra-low work function electron emitters. Conversely, the $(V_{2/3}\square_{1/3})_2CF_2$ MXene has a rather high WF and hence can be used as a hole injector for Schottky-barrier-free contact applications. Overall, our proof-of-concept study shows that theoretical predictions of MXene exfoliation and properties support further experimental research towards developing spintronics devices.
Effect of surface composition on the stability of Ti- and V-based oxycarbide and oxynitride MXenes

Abstract:Oxycarbide MXenes were recently experimentally identified, opening up the possibility of a vast majority of carbon-based MXenes synthesised to date being in fact oxycarbides, wherein some substitutional oxygen atoms are present amid the layers that were previously thought to contain carbon only. Here, using an approach based on density-functional theory, we study the structural, energetic and electronic properties of subsurface substitutional oxygen atoms on the X layers of MXenes of the form M 2 XT 2 , with M = Ti, V; X = C, N; and T = none, O or F. According to the calculations, subsurface O is thermodynamically stable in any concentration on all the analysed MXenes. Subsurface substitutional O atoms in the Ti 2 C MXene are thermodynamically driven towards the surface, leaving behind vacancies and creating local O surface terminations. Given that this process involves a very low energy barrier, we predict that, under conditions suitable for eliminating the surface termination of MXenes, many vacancies on the layers of X atoms should occur. The O-terminated carbide MXenes, Ti 2 CO 2 and V 2 CO 2 , are stable with their hexagonal symmetry up to a threshold amount of subsurface O, around 75 %, which is above the maximum experimentally observed concentration, 65 %. The F surface termination stabilizes the hexagonal structure of MXenes, which no longer distort regardless of the presence and amount of subsurface oxygen. This suggests that MXene synthesis routes based on fluorine-containing compounds are the most indicated for synthesising nitride MXenes. The PBE functional predicts the semiconductor characteristics of the Ti 2 CO 2 MXene to be lost in the presence of subsurface O, even a percentage as low as 6 %, the lowest considered in this work. The hybrid HSE06 functional predicts the oxycarbide material to remain a semiconductor, but with a significantly lowered band gap energy with increasing substitutional O content. Nevertheless, both functionals agree that the mixture of C and O atoms between the Ti layers of the Ti 2 CO 2 MXene increases its conductivity. To the best of our knowledge, this MXene has never been confirmed experimentally to behave as a semiconductor probably because the real samples of this MXene contain subsurface oxygen.

Abstract:Large scale synthesis and delamination of 2D Mo 2 CT x (where T is a surface termination group) has been achieved by selectively etching gallium from the recently discovered nanolaminated, ternary transition metal carbide Mo 2 Ga 2 C. Different synthesis and delamination routes result in different flake morphologies. The resistivity of free‐standing Mo 2 CT x films increases by an order of magnitude as the temperature is reduced from 300 to 10 K, suggesting semiconductor‐like behavior of this MXene, in contrast to Ti 3 C 2 T x which exhibits metallic behavior. At 10 K, the magnetoresistance is positive. Additionally, changes in electronic transport are observed upon annealing of the films. When 2 μm thick films are tested as electrodes in supercapacitors, capacitances as high as 700 F cm −3 in a 1 m sulfuric acid electrolyte and high capacity retention for at least 10,000 cycles at 10 A g −1 are obtained. Free‐standing Mo 2 CT x films, with ≈8 wt% carbon nanotubes, perform well when tested as an electrode material for Li‐ions, especially at high rates. At 20 and 131 C cycling rates, stable reversible capacities of 250 and 76 mAh g −1 , respectively, are achieved for over 1000 cycles.

Ambient-Stable Two-Dimensional Titanium Carbide (MXene) Enabled by Iodine Etching

Abstract:MXene (e.g., Ti3 C2 ) represents an important class of two-dimensional (2D) materials owing to its unique metallic conductivity and tunable surface chemistry. However, the mainstream synthetic methods rely on the chemical etching of MAX powders (e.g., Ti3 AlC2 ) using hazardous HF or alike, leading to MXene sheets with fluorine termination and poor ambient stability in colloidal dispersions. Here, we demonstrate a fluoride-free, iodine (I2 ) assisted etching route for preparing 2D MXene (Ti3 C2 Tx , T=O, OH) with oxygen-rich terminal groups and intact lattice structure. More than 71 % of sheets are thinner than 5 nm with an average size of 1.8 μm. They present excellent thin-film conductivity of 1250 S cm-1 and great ambient stability in water for at least 2 weeks. 2D MXene sheets with abundant oxygen surface groups are excellent electrode materials for supercapacitors, delivering a high gravimetric capacitance of 293 F g-1 at a scan rate of 1 mV s-1 , superior to those made from fluoride-based etchants (<290 F g-1 at 1 mV s-1 ). Our strategy provides a promising pathway for the facile and sustainable production of highly stable MXene materials.

Abstract:B systematically controlling the carbothermal reduction of TiO2 with excess carbon and ball milling, highly crystalline and stoichiometric TiC and Ti3AlC2 carbides with minimum substitutional oxygen impurities are synthesized. High‐quality conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene are obtained. Structural changes are elucidated by Rietveld refinement and their effects on the physical properties are supported by density functional theory calculations. MXenes are an emerging class of 2D materials with unique properties including metallic conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and surface tunability, which ensure their utility for diverse applications. However, the synthesis of MXenes with high crystallinity and atomic stoichiometry in a low‐cost process is still challenging because of the difficulty in controlling the oxygen substitute in the precursors and final products of MXenes, which limits their academic understanding and practical applications. Here, a novel cost‐effective method is reported to synthesize a highly crystalline and stoichiometric Ti3C2Tx MXene with minimum substitutional oxygen impurities by controlling the amount of excess carbon and time of high‐energy milling in carbothermal reduction of recycled TiO2 source. The highest used content (2 wt%) of excess‐carbon yields TiC with the highest carbon content and minimal oxygen substitutes, which leads to the Ti3AlC2 MAX phase with improved crystallinity and atomic stoichiometry, and finally Ti3C2Tx MXene with the highest electrical conductivity (11738 S cm−1) and superior electromagnetic shielding effectiveness. Additionally, the effects of carbon content and substitutional oxygen on the physical properties of TiC and Ti3AlC2 are elucidated by density‐functional‐theory calculations. This inexpensive TiO2‐based method of synthesizing high‐quality Ti3C2Tx MXene can facilitate large‐scale production and thus accelerate global research on MXenes.

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrated that two-dimensional (2D) MXene materials (Ti3C2) were creatively introduced into the thermal catalysis fields of high energy density salts dihydroxylammonium 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (TKX-50) and Ti3C2 MXene materials play a significant catalytic role in the thermal decomposition of TKX-50. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the morphology and structure of the Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to evaluate the thermal decomposition properties of pure TKX-50 with and without 2D Ti3C2 added. The results showed that with adding 5 wt% MXene, the peak temperature of TKX-50 was reduced from 250.5 to 233.3 °C, which is a reduction of 17.2 °C. The reaction heat release increased from 2197 to 2907 J g−1, which is an increase of 710 J g−1. The Ea was decreased by 44.8 kJ mol−1, from 220.0 to 175.2 kJ mol−1. Moreover, a synergistic catalytic mechanism for the thermal decomposition of TKX-50 was proposed.

Abstract:This study details the synthesis of optimized‐Ti3AlC2 MAX via pressureless sintering in inert environment, followed by pre‐etch hydrochloric acid washing, which removes intermetallic impurities. The pre‐washed MAX is subjected to selective etching using a mixture of hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acids. The resulting multilayered Ti3C2Tx MXene is then delaminated using lithium chloride to yield single‐ to few‐layered Ti3C2Tx MXene flakes. To advance the MXene field, it is crucial to optimize each step of the synthesis process and create a detailed, systematic guide for synthesizing high‐quality MXene that can be consistently reproduced. In this study, a detailed guide is provided for an optimized synthesis of titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene using a mixture of hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acids for the selective etching of the stoichimetric‐Ti3AlC2 MAX phase and delamination of the etched multilayered Ti3C2Tx MXene using lithium chloride at 65 °C for 1 h with argon bubbling. The effect of different synthesis variables is investigated, including the stoichiometry of the mixed powders to synthesize Ti3AlC2, pre‐etch impurity removal conditions, selective etching, storage, and drying of MXene multilayer powder, and the subsequent delamination conditions. The synthesis yield and the MXene film electrical conductivity are used as the two parameters to evaluate the MXene quality. Also the MXenes are characterized with scanning electron microscopy, x‐ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and ellipsometry. The Ti3C2Tx film made via the optimized method shows electrical conductivity as high as ≈21,000 S/cm with a synthesis yield of up to 38 %. A detailed protocol is also provided for the Ti3C2Tx MXene synthesis as the supporting information for this study.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, commonly known as MXenes, have continually gained interest since the discovery of the first MXene in 2011, due to their tunable structures, wide variety of properties, and performance in an extensive set of applications. However, the resulting structures, properties, and performances have been directly related to how the material is synthesized or processed. This chapter serves as an introduction to the current top-down chemical etching methods used to synthesize MXenes, such as fluoride-containing aqueous etchant solutions, molten-salt etching procedures, and alkaline or hydrothermal treatments. Emphasis is given to selective etching from aluminum-containing layered precursors; however, insight into selective etching of other A elements (gallium, silicon, etc.) is discussed. The latter half of the chapter is devoted to reviewing large-scale production and processing methods, general processing and properties which should be expected after each synthesis or deposition route, an overview of current challenges, and a perspective for the future of 2D MXenes.
Stabilizing Ti3C2Tx MXene flakes in air by removing confined water

Abstract:MXenes have demonstrated potential for various applications owing to their tunable surface chemistry and metallic conductivity. However, high temperatures can accelerate MXene film oxidation in air. Understanding the mechanisms of MXene oxidation at elevated temperatures, which is still limited, is critical in improving their thermal stability for high-temperature applications. Here, we demonstrate that Ti[Formula: see text]C[Formula: see text]T[Formula: see text] MXene monoflakes have exceptional thermal stability at temperatures up to 600[Formula: see text]C in air, while multiflakes readily oxidize in air at 300[Formula: see text]C. Density functional theory calculations indicate that confined water between Ti[Formula: see text]C[Formula: see text]T[Formula: see text] flakes has higher removal energy than surface water and can thus persist to higher temperatures, leading to oxidation. We demonstrate that the amount of confined water correlates with the degree of oxidation in stacked flakes. Confined water can be fully removed by vacuum annealing Ti[Formula: see text]C[Formula: see text]T[Formula: see text] films at 600[Formula: see text]C, resulting in substantial stability improvement in multiflake films (can withstand 600[Formula: see text]C in air). These findings provide fundamental insights into the kinetics of confined water and its role in Ti[Formula: see text]C[Formula: see text]T[Formula: see text] oxidation. This work enables the use of stable monoflake MXenes in high-temperature applications and provides guidelines for proper vacuum annealing of multiflake films to enhance their stability.
