Abstract:Objectives: This study evaluated the phase composition, phase transformation behaviour, and mechanical properties of five heat-treated NiTi instruments. Methods: ProTaper NEXT (M-wire, PTN), ProTaper Gold (Gold-wire, PTG), One Curve (C-wire, OC), EdgeTaper Platinum (Fire-wire, ETP), NeoNiTi (electrical discharge machining-wire, NNA), and ProTaper Universal (conventional wire, PTU, control) with #25-tip size were tested (n = 12/group) for cyclic fatigue resistance (number of cycles to failure; NCF) and torsional resistance (angle of rotation to fracture and maximum torque at fracture [ultimate torsional strength]). The geometry and fracture surfaces of the tested instruments were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The phase transformation temperature and phase composition of the instruments were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. Data were statistically analysed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test, with the significance level set at 5%. Results: PTG showed the highest NCF (P < .05) at 37°C, while ETP exhibited the highest angle of rotation to fracture, ultimate torsional strength, and stiffness (P < .05). Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated typical clusters of fatigue striations and numerous cracks after cyclic fatigue fracture, whereas there was a concentric abrasion pattern with a dimple and microvoids at the centre after torsional fracture. In differential scanning calorimetry curves, austenite-finishing temperatures of heat-treated instruments were higher than 37°C, whereas that of PTU was lower than 37°C. PTU showed strong peaks of austenite at 25 and 37°C, whereas ETP showed a strong peak of R-phase at 25°C, but mostly austenite phase at 37°C in X-ray diffraction. Conclusions: Geometry, alloy type, and phase transformation temperatures of NiTi instruments affected their mechanical behaviour. Clinical relevance: PTG showed the highest NCF, suitable for markedly curved canals. ETP had the highest torsional resistance, appropriate for narrow and constricted canals.
Effect of kinematics on the torque/force generation, surface characteristics, and shaping ability of a nickel-titanium rotary glide path instrument: An ex vivo study

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate the effect of various rotational motions on the torque/force generation, surface wear, and shaping ability of the ProGlider glide path instrument (Dentsply Sirona). Methodology: Mesiobuccal and mesiolingual canals of mandibular molars were selected based on the canal volume, length, angle of curvature (25°-40°), and radius of curvature (4-8 mm) after micro-computed tomographic scanning. The samples were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 13, each) according to movement kinematics [continuous rotation (CR; 300 rpm), optimum torque reverse motion (OTR; 180° forward and 90° reverse when torque >0.4 N cm), time-dependent reciprocal motion (TmR; 180° forward and 90° reverse), and optimal glide path motion (OGP; a combination of 90° forward, 90° reverse, 90° forward, and 120° reverse)]. Instrumentation was performed with an automated root canal instrument and torque/force analysing device. Maximum torque/force values, canal volume changes, and canal-centring ratios at 1, 3, 5, and 7 mm were evaluated. Surface defects (pits, grooves, microcracks, blunt cutting edges, and disruption of cutting edges) and spiral distortion on the ProGlider instrument were scored at the tip and 5 mm short of the tip before and after five consecutive uses with scanning electron microscopy. The Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Dunn's post-test with Bonferroni correction and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used to analyse the data (α = 0.05). Results: Optimal glide path motion generated significantly less clockwise torque and greater upward force than other groups (p < .05). OGP resulted in significantly fewer surface defects than CR (p < .05). In OGP and CR, the tip exhibited more surface defects than 5 mm short of the tip (p < .05). CR resulted in greater volume changes than OGP and TmR (p < .05) and greater centring ratios (i.e., more deviation) than OGP at 1 mm and OTR at 3 mm (p < .05). Conclusions: Under laboratory conditions using the ProGlider instrument, OGP generated significantly less clockwise torque and greater upward force than the other rotatory motions. OGP generated fewer superficial defects than CR, and the three modes of reciprocal rotation better maintained the apical curvature of root canals than CR with the ProGlider instrument.
Effect of Heat Treatment on Mechanical Properties of Nickel-Titanium Instruments

Abstract:Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the torsional resistance, cyclic fatigue resistance, and bending stiffness of nickel-titanium (NiTi) file systems with different heat treatments and cross-sectional designs. Methods: WaveOne Primary treated with memory-triple (MT) heat treatment (WOMT) was compared with WaveOne Primary (WO) and WaveOne Gold Primary (WOG). Torsional resistance test was performed using a customized device, and the distortion angle, ultimate strength, and toughness were evaluated. For cyclic fatigue resistance test, the instruments were reciprocated with continuous 4 mm up-and-down movement until fracture in a customized device, and the time to fracture was compared. Fracture surfaces of each group were examined under the scanning electron microscope. Bending stiffness was measured using a custom-made device. The results were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey's post hoc comparison at a significance level of 95%. Results: WOMT showed higher ultimate strength and toughness than the other systems (P < .05). WOMT also showed highest cyclic fatigue resistance among the tested groups (P < .05). WO had the highest bending stiffness than others, whereas WOMT had a larger residual angle than others (P < .05). Conclusions: This new MT heat treatment technique makes NiTi file more flexible and improves its mechanical properties. In addition, the effect of heat treatment on flexibility was found to be more significant than that of the cross-sectional area.
Effect of repetitive up-and-down movements on torque/force generation, surface defects and shaping ability of nickel-titanium rotary instruments: an ex vivo study

Abstract:Background: The screw-in effect is a tendency of a nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary endodontic file to be pulled into the canal, which can result in a sudden increase in stress leading to instrument fracture, and over-instrumentation beyond the apex. To reduce screw-in force, repeated up-and-down movements are recommended to distribute flexural stress during instrumentation, especially in curved and constricted canals. However, there is no consensus on the optimal number of repetitions. Therefore, this study aimed to examine how repeated up-and-down movements at the working length affect torque/force generation, surface defects, and canal shaping ability of JIZAI and TruNatomy instruments. Methods: An original automated root canal instrumentation device was used to prepare canals and to record torque/force changes. The mesial roots of human mandibular molars with approximately 30˚ of canal curvature were selected through geometric matching using micro-computed tomography. The samples were divided into three groups according to the number of up-and-down movements at the working length (1, 3, and 6 times; n = 24 each) and subdivided according to the instruments: JIZAI (#13/0.04 taper, #25/0.04 taper, and #35/0.04 taper) or TruNatomy (#17/0.02 taper, #26/0.04 taper, and #36/0.03 tape) (n = 12 each). The design, surface defects, phase transformation temperatures, nickel-titanium ratios, torque, force, shaping ability, and surface deformation were evaluated. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests (α = 0.05). Results: The instruments had different designs and phase transformation temperatures. The 3 and 6 up-and-down movements resulted in a smaller upward force compared to 1 movement (p < 0.05). TruNatomy generated significantly less maximum torque, force, and surface wear than JIZAI (p < 0.05). However, TruNatomy exhibited a larger canal deviation (p < 0.05). No statistical differences in shaping ability were detected between different up-and-down movements. Conclusions: Under laboratory conditions with JIZAI and TruNatomy, a single up-and-down movement at the working length increased the screw-in force of subsequent instruments in severely curved canals in the single-length instrumentation technique. A single up-and-down movement generated more surface defects on the file when using JIZAI. TruNatomy resulted in less stress generation during instrumentation, while JIZAI better maintained the curvature of root canals.

Abstract:Aim and objective: The present study aims to evaluate the difference in torsional resistance of two reciprocating nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) rotary files: WaveOne Gold and EdgeOne Fire. Materials and methods: A total of 40 nickel-titanium rotary instruments (n = 40): 20 WaveOne Gold Small (WOGS) and 20 EdgeOne Fire Small (EOFS) were divided into two groups. Each instrument was tested using a torsional resistance device already validated in previous studies to evaluate and compare torsional resistance. The static torsional test was implemented by blocking each instrument at 3 mm from the tip and rotating it until fracture with a reciprocating motion. Torque to fracture (TtF) and fragment length (FL) were measured and statistically analyzed. Results: Statistical analysis of TtF found significant differences between the two groups (p<0.05). The EOFS showed higher TtF if compared to WOGS, with a mean value and a standard deviation of 3.05 ± 0.07 (N cm) against 2.97 ± 0.08 (N cm). Data for FL showed no significant differences (p>0.05) between the two groups. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, it is reasonable to assert that EOFS instruments showed a higher torsional resistance if compared to the WOGS. Clinical significance: As evidenced by this study, EOFS should be considered as a safer solution, in terms of torsional resistance, if compared to WOGS, reducing the risk of intracanal separation due to excessive torsional load.

Abstract:Introduction The performance and mechanical properties of nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments are influenced by factors such as cross-section, flute design, raw material, and manufacturing processes. Many improvements have been proposed by manufacturers during the past decade to provide clinicians with safer and more efficient instruments. Methods The mechanical performance of NiTi alloys is sensitive to their microstructure and associated thermomechanical treatment history. Heat treatment or thermal processing is one of the most fundamental approaches toward adjusting the transition temperature in NiTi alloy, which affects the fatigue resistance of NiTi endodontic files. The newly developed NiTi instruments made from controlled memory wire, M-Wire (Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK), or R-phase wire represent the next generation of NiTi alloys with improved flexibility and fatigue resistance. The advantages of NiTi files for canal cleaning and shaping are decreased canal transportation and ledging, a reduced risk of file fracture, and faster and more efficient instrumentation. The clinician must understand the nature of different NiTi raw materials and their impact on instrument performance because many new instruments are introduced on a regular basis. Results This review summarizes the metallurgical properties of next-generation NiTi instruments, the impact of thermomechanical treatment on instrument flexibility, and the resistance to cyclic fatigue and torsion. Conclusions The aim of this review was to provide clinicians with the knowledge necessary for evidence-based practices, maximizing the benefits from the selection and application of NiTi rotary instruments for root canal treatment.
Comparative Evaluation of the Cyclic Fatigue Resistance of WaveOne Gold in Reciprocation, ProGlider in Rotary Motion, and Manual Files in a Reciprocating Handpiece Within Simulated Curved Canals: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Aim This study compares the cyclic fatigue resistance of glide path files versus manual files used with a reciprocating handpiece in simulated curved canals, specifically evaluating WaveOne Gold Glider, ProGlider, stainless steel (S.S.) K files, nickel-titanium (NiTi) K files, and Flexo K files. Materials and methods Seventy-five instruments were divided into five groups of 15. Simulated canals with a 45° angle and a 5 mm radius of curvature were created using laser micromachining on S.S. blocks. A reciprocating endodontic handpiece (TEP-ER10, NSK, Japan) was used for the manual files and an X-Smart Plus endo motor for the rotary files. The time to fracture was recorded via videography. Statistical analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Tukey tests. Results Flexo files exhibited the highest mean cyclic fatigue resistance (1690.33 ± 456.97 seconds), followed by WaveOne Gold Glider (872.13 ± 210.08 seconds), NiTi K files (760.73 ± 163.86 seconds), S.S. K files (707.60 ± 257.98 seconds), and ProGlider (371.00 ± 66.02 seconds). Fragment length differences were statistically insignificant among the groups. ANOVA showed significant differences in cyclic fatigue resistance but not in fragment length. Conclusion Flexo files showed superior cyclic fatigue resistance, making them ideal for glide path formation. NiTi and S.S. K files with a reciprocating handpiece performed similarly to WaveOne Gold Glider, providing a cost-effective alternative to rotary systems, especially in resource-limited areas. ProGlider had the lowest resistance, highlighting the advantage of reciprocating motion in enhancing durability.

Abstract:ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to evaluate the cyclic and torsional fatigue resistance of the reciprocating single-file systems Reciproc Blue 25.08 (VDW GmbH, Munich, Germany), Prodesign R 25.06 (Easy Dental Equipment, Belo Horizonte, Brazil), and WaveOne Gold 25.07 (Dentsply/Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK, USA).Materials and methodsSixty reciprocating instruments of the systems Reciproc Blue R25 (RB #25 .08 taper), Prodesign R (PDR #25 .06 taper), and WaveOne Gold (WOG #25 .07 taper) (n = 20) were used. Cyclic fatigue resistance testing was performed by measuring the time to failure in an artificial stainless steel canal with a 60° angle of curvature and a 5-mm radius located 5 mm from the tip (n = 10). The torsional test (ISO 3630-1) evaluated the torque and angle of rotation at failure of new instruments (n = 10) in the portion 3 mm from the tip. The fractured surface of each fragment was also observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, a supplementary examination was performed to measure the cross-sectional area of each instrument 3 and 5 mm from the tip. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test, and the level of significance was set at 5%.ResultsThe cyclic fatigue resistance values of PDR 25.06 were significantly higher (P < 0.05). RB 25.08 showed higher fatigue resistance than WOG 25.07 (P < 0.05). The torsional test showed that PDR 25.06 had lower torsional strength (P < 0.05). No differences were observed between RB 25.08 and WOG 25.07 (P > 0.05). PDR 25.06 showed higher angular rotation values than RB 25.08 and WOG 25.07 (P < 0.05). RB 25.08 presented higher angular rotation than WOG 25.07 (P < 0.05). The cross-sectional area analysis showed that PDR 25.06 presented the smallest cross-sectional areas at 3 and 5 mm from the tip (P < 0.05).ConclusionPDR 25.06 presented the highest cyclic fatigue resistance and angular rotation until fracture compared to RB 25.08 and WOG 25.07. In addition, RB 25.08 and WOG 25.07 had higher torsional strength than PDR 25.06.Clinical relevanceIn endodontic practice, thermally treated reciprocating instruments have been used for the root canal preparation of curved and constricted canals; therefore, these instruments should present high flexibility and suitable torsional strength to minimize the risk of instrument fracture.

Surface roughness and cyclic fatigue resistance of a novel shaping system: An in-vitro study

Abstract:Recently developed Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) instruments with practical changes have resulted in safer instrumentation. In addition, topographical features on the file surface are a contributing factor to clinical durability. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate both the cyclic fatigue resistance and the roughness change of MTwo and Rotate instruments (VDW, Munich, Germany). Each instrument (n = 6/each group) was scanned with an atomic force microscopy prior to and after instrumentation. In addition, cyclic fatigue testing was conducted for each instrument (n = 11/each group) with stainless-steel blocks, including 45°-60°-90° degrees of curvature milled to the instruments' size. The roughness parameters increased for both systems after instrumentation (p<0.05). Both systems presented an increased roughness following instrumentation (p<0.05). The cyclic fatigue resistance was lowest at 90° for both systems (p<0.05), whereas the Rotate files presented a higher resistance than that of the Mtwo files (p<0.05). Compared to the Mtwo files, Rotate files presented better resistance, while the resistance decreased as the curvature increased.

Comprehensive Assessment of Cyclic Fatigue Strength in Five Multiple-File Nickel–Titanium Endodontic Systems

Materials

Abstract:The resistance of nickel–titanium endodontic instruments against cyclic fatigue failure remains a significant concern in clinical settings. This study aimed to assess the cyclic fatigue strength of five nickel–titanium rotary systems, while correlating the results with the instruments' geometric and metallurgical characteristics. A total of 250 new instruments (sizes S1/A1, S2/A2, F1/B1, F2/B2, F3/B3) from ProTaper Gold, ProTaper Universal, Premium Taper Gold, Go-Taper Flex, and U-Files systems underwent mechanical testing. Prior to experimental procedures, all instruments were meticulously inspected to identify irregularities that could affect the investigation. Using a stereomicroscope, design characteristics such as the number of spirals, length, spirals per millimeter, and average helical angle of the active blade were determined. The surface finishing characteristics of the instruments were examined using a scanning electron microscope. Differential scanning calorimetry was employed to establish the instruments' phase transformation temperatures, while energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was utilized to analyze the elemental composition of the alloy. The instruments were subjected to cyclic fatigue testing within a stainless steel non-tapered artificial canal featuring a 6 mm radius and 86 degrees of curvature. Appropriate statistical tests were applied to compare groups, considering a significance level of 0.05. The assessed design characteristics varied depending on the instrument type. The least irregular surface finishing was observed in U-Files and Premium Taper Gold files, while the most irregular surface was noted in Go-Taper Flex. All instruments exhibited near-equiatomic proportions of nickel and titanium elements, whereas ProTaper Universal and U-Files instruments demonstrated lower phase transformation temperatures compared to their counterparts. Larger-sized instruments, as well as ProTaper Universal and U-Files, tended to display lower cyclic fatigue strength results. Overall, the design, metallurgical, and cyclic fatigue outcomes varied among instruments and systems. Understanding these outcomes may assist clinicians in making more informed decisions regarding instrument selection.

Eccentric overload training for patients with chronic Achilles tendon pain – a randomised controlled study with reliability testing of the evaluation methods

Abstract:The purpose was to examine the reliability of measurement techniques and evaluate the effect of a treatment protocol including eccentric overload for patients with chronic pain from the Achilles tendon. Thirty‐two patients with proximal achillodynia (44 involved Achilles tendons) participated in tests for reliability measures. No significant differences and strong (r=0.56–0.72) or very strong (r=0.90–0.93) correlations were found between pre‐tests, except for the documentation of pain at rest (P<0.008, r=0.45). To evaluate the effect of a 12‐week treatment protocol for patients with chronic proximal achillodynia (pain longer than three months) 40 patients (57 involved Achilles tendons) with a mean age of 45 years (range 19–77) were randomised into an experiment group (n=22) and a control group (n=18). Evaluations were performed after six weeks of treatment and after three and six months. The evaluations (including the pre‐tests), performed by a physical therapist unaware of the group the patients belonged to, consisted of a questionnaire, a range of motion test, a jumping test, a toe‐raise test, a pain on palpation test and pain evaluation during jumping, toe‐raises and at rest. A follow‐up was also performed after one year. There were no significant differences between groups at any of the evaluations, except that the experiment group jumped significantly lower than the control group at the six‐week evaluation. There was, however, an overall better result for the experiment group with significant improvements in plantar flexion, and reduction in pain on palpation, number of patients having pain during walking, having periods when asymptomatic and having swollen Achilles tendon. The controls did not show such changes. Furthermore, at the one‐year follow‐up there were significantly more patients in the experiment group, compared with the control group, that were satisfied with their present physical activity level, considered themselves fully recovered, and had no pain during or after physical activity. The measurement techniques and the treatment protocol with eccentric overload used in the present study can be recommended for patients with chronic pain from the Achilles tendon.
Influence of cross-sectional design and dimension on mechanical behavior of nickel-titanium instruments under torsion and bending: a numerical analysis.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to examine the influence of the cross-sectional configuration and dimensions (size and taper) on the torsional and bending behavior of nickel-titanium rotary instruments, taking into account the nonlinear mechanical properties of material.Ten cross-sectional configurations, square, triangular, U-type, S-type (large and small), convex-triangle, and 4 proprietary ones (Mani NRT and RT2, Quantec, and Mtwo), were analyzed under torsion or bending by using a 3-dimensional finite element method. The von Mises stresses were correlated with the critical values for various phases of the nickel-titanium material.Different loading conditions led to unequal patterns of stress distribution. Increasing the applied torque or bending angle resulted in a rise in the corresponding stresses in the instrument. Favorable stress distribution without dangerous stress concentration was observed if the material was undergoing superelastic transformation at that applied load. The ultimate strength of the material was not exceeded when the instrument was bent up to a 50-degree curvature. On the other hand, when a torsional moment of greater than 1.0 N*mm was applied, the maximum stresses developed in some designs would exceed the ultimate strength of the material. Little variation in the von Mises stresses was observed for instruments of different nominal sizes and tapers on bending to similar extent.The cross-sectional design has a greater impact than taper or size of the instrument on the stresses developed in the instrument under either torsion or bending. Certain cross-sectional configurations are prone to fracture by excess torsional stresses.

Abstract:Introduction: To improve the fracture resistance of nickel-titanium (NiTi) files, manufacturers have introduced new alloys and developed new manufacturing processes for the fabrication of NiTi files. This study aimed to examine the phase transformation behavior and microstructure of NiTi instruments from a novel controlled memory NiTi wire (CM wire). Methods: Instruments of Endo Sequence (ES), Pro File (PF), Pro File Vortex (Vortex), Twisted Files (IF), Typhoon (TYP), and Typhoon (TM) CM (TYP CM), all size 25/.04, were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Microstructures of etched instruments were observed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with x-ray energy-dispersive spectrometric (EDS) analyses. Results: The DSC analyses showed that each segment of the TYP CM and Vortex instruments had an austenite transformation completion or austenite-finish (A(f)) temperature exceeding 37 degrees C, whereas the NiTi instruments made from conventional superelastic NiTi wire (ES, PF, and TYP) and TF had A(f) temperatures substantially below mouth temperature. The higher A(f) temperature of TYP CM instruments was consistent with a mixture of austenite and martensite structure, which was observed at room temperature with XRD. All NiTi instruments had room temperature martensite microstructures consisting of colonies of lenticular features with substantial twinning. EDS analysis indicated that the precipitates in all NiTi instruments were titanium-rich, with an approximate composition of Ti2Ni. Conclusions: The TYP CM and Vortex instruments with heat treatment contribute to increase austenite transformation temperature. The CM instrument has significant changes in the phase transformation behavior, compared with conventional superelastic NiTi instruments. (1 Endod 2011;37:1566-1571)

Abstract:Introduction Determination of the glide path is recommended before using rotary instruments. This study aimed to evaluate the dynamic cyclic fatigue resistance of new and used glider rotary instruments in up to six root canals. Methods Seventy-two TruNatomy Glider files were used for the preparation of root canals of extracted lower molars, which were then submitted to the dynamic cyclic fatigue test carried out in a curved metallic artificial canal. The instruments were divided into four groups (n = 18): Control group, new instruments without any use in the root canal; Group 2U, instruments used in two mesial canals; Group 4U, instruments used in four mesial canals; Group 6U, instruments used in six mesial canals. The time to failure (TF) of the instrument was recorded, and the number of cycles to failure (NCF) was calculated. The data were submitted to one-way analysis of variance and to the Games-Howell test for multiple comparisons, adopting a significance level of 5%. Results TF and NCF were significantly affected by the number of file uses. The Games-Howell test revealed that TF and NCF were significantly greater in the control group than in Group 4U. In Group 2U, TF and NCF were intermediate and not significantly different from the control group. Group 6U had significantly lower TF and NCF than all other groups. Conclusion The TruNatomy Glider can be used as a glide path for up to two mesial canals of mandibular molars, whereas its use on four or six root canals is not suggested.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to evaluate the cyclic fatigue resistance of novel NiTi files (subjected to heat treatment) using the in vitro model (artificial canal). Twelve ProDesign Logic instruments - PDL 25/.06 (Easy Equipamentos Odontológicos, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and 12 Protaper Next X2 instruments - PTN (tip 25) were included in this research. The Static cyclic fatigue test was performed with a grooved stainless steel block simulating a canal of 1,5 mm diameters, a 60o angle of curvature and 5 mm radius. The files were positioned inside the artificial canal and rotated until the fracture occurred. Using the time until fracture (seconds) and the number of rotations per minute (RPM), the number of cycles until fracture (NCF) was calculated and the length of ruptured fragments was registered. Three samples from each group were analyzed in Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) to characterize the metal rupture. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney non-parametric test and the level of significance considered was p<0.05. PDL obtained a mean value of 956,0 NCF (352,0 - SD) and PTN achieved 391,0 NCF (36.7 - SD) with statistical significance between the groups (p 0.05). SEM analysis showed features compatible with ductile fracture. ProDesign LOGIC files showed higher NCF than Protaper Next X2. There was no difference between groups considering the length of the ruptured fragment.

Abstract:Introduction In an effort to enhance the quality of mechanized endodontic instruments, various thermal treatment methods and design modifications have been suggested. However, upon evaluation, these endodontic instruments may exhibit microscopic irregularities. The objective of this in vitro study was to analyze the cutting capacity, surface finish, and mechanical properties of NiTi 25/.04 Rotate (VDW GmbH, Munich, Germany) and Logic 2 (Easy Equipamentos Odontológicos, Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil) rotary instruments. Methodology 20 rotary instruments were divided into 2 groups: GR, the group with ROTATE instruments (n=10); and GL2, the group with LOGIC 2 instruments (n=10). They were evaluated for roughness, using a profilometer, for bending resistance, buckling resistance, and cutting capacity using a universal testing machine, as well as for torsional strength (torque and angular deflection) using a torquemeter. The instruments were visualized before and after the mechanical tests through scanning electron microscopy. Results GR showed better surface finish in terms of roughness, greater cutting capacity, and greater angular deflection than GL2 (p <0.05). However, GL2 showed better flexibility than GR (p 0.05). Conclusion The ROTATE and LOGIC 2 rotary instruments differed in their surface finish, cutting capacity, and mechanical properties, except for their buckling resistance and required fracture torque.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to develop a new instrument to measure the mechanical properties of rotary endodontic Ni-Ti files (ProTaper Gold F2, ProTaper Ultimate F2, and HyFlex EDM Onefile), and to evaluate the overall utility of the device. The instrument was capable of analyzing the 6-axis force/torque generated by the files during cyclic dynamic movement in a metal curved artificial root canal, and doing automatic cyclic dynamic filing in a resin root canal with a preset vertical force limit by adopting a negative feedback mechanism. By analyzing the 6-axis force/torque, we were able to estimate the position and contact points of the files in the curved root canal. ProTaper Gold showed the highest force/torque in all directions. HyFlex EDM had the highest hysteresis ratio, centering ratio value and NCF (number of cycles to fatigue fracture), while the lowest vertical force.
