Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has taken breathtaking leaps forward in recent years, evolving into a strategic technology for pioneering the future. The growing demand for computing power—especially in demanding inference tasks, exemplified by generative AI models such as ChatGPT—poses challenges for conventional electronic computing systems. Advances in photonics technology have ignited interest in investigating photonic computing as a promising AI computing modality. Through the profound fusion of AI and photonics technologies, intelligent photonics is developing as an emerging interdisciplinary field with significant potential to revolutionize practical applications. Deep learning, as a subset of AI, presents efficient avenues for optimizing photonic design, developing intelligent optical systems, and performing optical data processing and analysis. Employing AI in photonics can empower applications such as smartphone cameras, biomedical microscopy, and virtual and augmented reality displays. Conversely, leveraging photonics-based devices and systems for the physical implementation of neural networks enables high speed and low energy consumption. Applying photonics technology in AI computing is expected to have a transformative impact on diverse fields, including optical communications, automatic driving, and astronomical observation. Here, recent advances in intelligent photonics are presented from the perspective of the synergy between deep learning and metaphotonics, holography, and quantum photonics. This review also spotlights relevant applications and offers insights into challenges and prospects.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been spreading in most scientific areas and have become a heated focus in photonics research in recent years. Forward modeling and inverse design using AI can achieve high efficiency and accuracy for photonics components. With AI-assisted electronic circuit design for photonics components, more advanced photonics applications have emerged. Photonics benefit a great deal from AI, and AI, in turn, benefits from photonics by carrying out AI algorithms, such as complicated deep neural networks using photonics components that use photons rather than electrons. Beyond the photonics domain, other related research areas or topics governed by Maxwell’s equations share remarkable similarities in using the help of AI. The studies in computational electromagnetics, the design of microwave devices, as well as their various applications greatly benefit from AI. This article reviews leveraging AI in photonics modeling, simulation, and inverse design; leveraging photonics computing for implementing AI algorithms; and leveraging AI beyond photonics topics, such as microwaves and quantum-related topics.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) and photonics have developed a promising synergy, boosting scientific research. The full benefits of this interplay have not been reaped, partly due to the lack of a deep understanding of AI by photonics researchers. This paper aims to fill this gap providing the basis of AI and reviewing its most significant applications in classical and quantum photonics.The last decades saw a huge rise of artificial intelligence (AI) as a powerful tool to boost industrial and scientific research in a broad range of fields. AI and photonics are developing a promising two‐way synergy: on the one hand, AI approaches can be used to control a number of complex linear and nonlinear photonic processes, both in the classical and quantum regimes; on the other hand, photonics can pave the way for a new class of platforms to accelerate AI‐tasks. This review provides the reader with the fundamental notions of machine learning (ML) and neural networks (NNs) and presents the main AI applications in the fields of spectroscopy and chemometrics, computational imaging (CI), wavefront shaping and quantum optics. The review concludes with an overview of future developments of the promising synergy between AI and photonics.

Abstract:Photonic accelerators for Artificial Intelligence (AI) are rapidly advancing, promising to provide revolutionary computational speed for modern AI architectures. By leveraging photons with a bandwidth higher than 100 THz, photonic accelerators tackle the computational demands of AI tasks that GHz electronics alone cannot meet. Photonics accelerators integrate circuitry for matrix–vector operators and ultra-fast feature extractors, enabling energy-efficient and parallel computations that prove crucial for the training and inference of AI models in various applications, including classification, segmentation, and feature extraction. This Perspective discusses modern challenges and opportunities that optical computations open in AI for research and industry.

Abstract:Research in photonic computing has flourished due to the proliferation of optoelectronic components on photonic integration platforms. Photonic integrated circuits have enabled ultrafast artificial neural networks, providing a framework for a new class of information processing machines. Algorithms running on such hardware have the potential to address the growing demand for machine learning and artificial intelligence in areas such as medical diagnosis, telecommunications, and high-performance and scientific computing. In parallel, the development of neuromorphic electronics has highlighted challenges in that domain, particularly related to processor latency. Neuromorphic photonics offers sub-nanosecond latencies, providing a complementary opportunity to extend the domain of artificial intelligence. Here, we review recent advances in integrated photonic neuromorphic systems, discuss current and future challenges, and outline the advances in science and technology needed to meet those challenges.

Abstract:In the dynamic landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI), two notable phenomena are becoming predominant: the exponential growth of large AI model sizes and the explosion of massive amount of data. Meanwhile, scientific research such as quantum computing and protein synthesis increasingly demand higher computing capacities. Neuromorphic computing, inspired by the mechanism and functionality of human brains, uses physical artificial neurons to do computations and is drawing widespread attention. Conventional electronic computing has experienced certain difficulties, particularly concerning the latency, crosstalk, and energy consumption of digital processors. As the Moore's law approaches its terminus, there is a urgent need for alternative computing architectures that can satisfy this growing computing demand and break through the von Neumann model. Recently, the expansion of optoelectronic devices on photonic integration platforms has led to significant growth in photonic computing, where photonic integrated circuits (PICs) have enabled ultrafast artificial neural networks (ANN) with sub-nanosecond latencies, low heat dissipation, and high parallelism. Such non-von Neumann photonic computing systems hold the promise to cater to the escalating requirements of AI and scientific computing. In this review, we study recent advancements in integrated photonic neuromorphic systems, and from the perspective of materials and device engineering, we lay out the scientific and technological breakthroughs necessary to advance the state-of-the-art. In particular, we examine various technologies and devices employed in neuromorphic photonic AI accelerators, spanning from traditional optics to PICs. Abstract:In recent decades, the demand for computational power has surged, particularly with the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI). As we navigate the post-Moore's law era, the limitations of traditional electrical digital computing, including process bottlenecks and power consumption issues, are propelling the search for alternative computing paradigms. Among various emerging technologies, integrated photonics stands out as a promising solution for next-generation high-performance computing, thanks to the inherent advantages of light, such as low latency, high bandwidth, and unique multiplexing techniques. Furthermore, the progress in photonic integrated circuits (PICs), which are equipped with abundant photoelectronic components, positions photonic-electronic integrated circuits as a viable solution for high-performance computing and hardware AI accelerators. In this review, we survey recent advancements in both PIC-based digital and analog computing for AI, exploring the principal benefits and obstacles of implementation. Additionally, we propose a comprehensive analysis of photonic AI from the perspectives of hardware implementation, accelerator architecture, and software-hardware co-design. In the end, acknowledging the existing challenges, we underscore potential strategies for overcoming these issues and offer insights into the future drivers for optical computing.

Abstract:The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) facilitates various applications from all areas but also poses great challenges in its hardware implementation in terms of speed and energy because of the explosive growth of data. Optical computing provides a distinctive perspective to address this bottleneck by harnessing the unique properties of photons including broad bandwidth, low latency, and high energy efficiency. In this review, we introduce the latest developments of optical computing for different AI models, including feedforward neural networks, reservoir computing, and spiking neural networks (SNNs). Recent progress in integrated photonic devices, combined with the rise of AI, provides a great opportunity for the renaissance of optical computing in practical applications. This effort requires multidisciplinary efforts from a broad community. This review provides an overview of the state-of-the-art accomplishments in recent years, discusses the availability of current technologies, and points out various remaining challenges in different aspects to push the frontier. We anticipate that the era of large-scale integrated photonics processors will soon arrive for practical AI applications in the form of hybrid optoelectronic frameworks.

Abstract:Abstract Nanophotonics has been an active research field over the past two decades, triggered by the rising interests in exploring new physics and technologies with light at the nanoscale. As the demands of performance and integration level keep increasing, the design and optimization of nanophotonic devices become computationally expensive and time-inefficient. Advanced computational methods and artificial intelligence, especially its subfield of machine learning, have led to revolutionary development in many applications, such as web searches, computer vision, and speech/image recognition. The complex models and algorithms help to exploit the enormous parameter space in a highly efficient way. In this review, we summarize the recent advances on the emerging field where nanophotonics and machine learning blend. We provide an overview of different computational methods, with the focus on deep learning, for the nanophotonic inverse design. The implementation of deep neural networks with photonic platforms is also discussed. This review aims at sketching an illustration of the nanophotonic design with machine learning and giving a perspective on the future tasks.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications require an increasing demand for computing resources that is far beyond the developing speed of electronic computing processors. Photonic computing, processing the information using photons instead of electrons, has been considered the next generation of computing modality to achieve disruptive improvements in computing speed and efficiency. This chapter systematically introduces ways to build the photonic hardware accelerator to implement a type of AI model, i.e., artificial neural network, based on photonic computing. The introduced photonic neural network architectures are built on the most fundamental building blocks of optical weighted interconnections and optical nonlinear neuron functionalities. As the photonic AI accelerator requires the cooperative work of various high-performance photonic devices, the researches of the on-chip photonic input-output interface, photon memory, and photon modulator are also summarized. Furthermore, we present detailed overviews of in-situ optical backpropagation training methods for photonic AI accelerators to achieve large-scale photonic intelligence computing with high accuracy.

Abstract:The field of mimicking the structure of the brain on a chip is experiencing interest driven by the demand for machine intelligent applications. However, the power consumption and available performance of machine-learning (ML) accelerating hardware still leave much desire for improvement. In this letter, we share viewpoints, challenges, and prospects of electronic-photonic neural network (NN) accelerators. Combining electronics with photonics offers synergistic co-design strategies for high-performance AI Application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and systems. Taking advantages of photonic signal processing capabilities and combining them with electronic logic control and data storage is an emerging prospect. However, the optical component library leaves much to be desired and is challenged by the enormous size of photonic devices. Within this context, we will review the emerging electro-optic materials, functional devices, and systems packaging strategies that, when realized, provide significant performance gains and fuel the ongoing AI revolution, leading to a stand-alone photonics-inside AI ASIC 'black-box' for streamlined plug-and-play board integration in future AI processors.

Abstract:Over the past decades, photonics has transformed many areas in both fundamental research and practical applications. In particular, we can manipulate light in a desired and prescribed manner by rationally designed subwavelength structures. However, constructing complex photonic structures and devices is still a time-consuming process, even for experienced researchers. As a subset of artificial intelligence, artificial neural networks serve as one potential solution to bypass the complicated design process, enabling us to directly predict the optical responses of photonic structures or perform the inverse design with high efficiency and accuracy. In this review, we will introduce several commonly used neural networks and highlight their applications in the design process of various optical structures and devices, particularly those in recent experimental works. We will also comment on the future directions to inspire researchers from different disciplines to collectively advance this emerging research field. © 2021 Chinese Laser Press

Abstract:The emerging intelligence technologies represented by deep learning have broadened their applications to various fields. Beyond the conventional electronics-based processing systems, the convergence of photonics and artificial intelligence (AI) technology enhances the performance and learning ability of AI. In this review, we propose the concept of an intelligent photonic system (IPS), illustrating it as a developing architecture with three different versions. For each version of IPS, we review several representative studies. Moreover we discuss the challenges towards an IPS and provide some prospects for the future development.
3D photonics for ultra-low energy, high bandwidth-density chip data links

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) hardware is positioned to unlock revolutionary computational abilities across diverse fields ranging from fundamental science [1] to medicine [2] and environmental science [3] by leveraging advanced semiconductor chips interconnected in vast distributed networks. However, AI chip development has far outpaced that of the networks that connect them, as chip computation speeds have accelerated a thousandfold faster than communication bandwidth over the last two decades [4, 5]. This gap is the largest barrier for scaling AI performance [6, 7] and results from the disproportionately high energy expended to transmit data [8], which is two orders of magnitude more intensive than computing [9]. Here, we show a leveling of this long-standing discrepancy and achieve the lowest energy optical data link to date through dense 3D integration of photonic and electronic chips. At 120 fJ of consumed energy per communicated bit and 5.3 Tb/s bandwidth per square millimeter of chip area, our platform simultaneously achieves a twofold improvement in both energy consumption and bandwidth density relative to prior demonstrations [10, 11]. These improvements are realized through employing massively parallel 80 channel microresonator-based transmitter and receiver arrays operating at 10 Gb/s per channel, occupying a combined chip footprint of only 0.32 mm2. Furthermore, commercial complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) foundries fabricate both the electronic and photonic chips on 300 mm wafers, providing a clear avenue to volume scaling. Through these demonstrated ultra-energy efficient, high bandwidth data communication links, this work eliminates the bandwidth bottleneck between spatially distanced compute nodes and will enable a fundamentally new scale of future AI computing hardware without constraints on data locality.
