Abstract:The high voltage (4.7 V vs. Li+ /Li) spinel lithium nickel manganese oxide (LiNi0.5 Mn1.5 O4 , LNMO) is a promising candidate for the next-generation of lithium ion batteries due to its high energy density, low cost and environmental impact. However, poor cycling performance at high cutoff potentials limits its commercialization. Herein, hollow structured LNMO is synergistically paired with an ionic liquid electrolyte, 1M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) in N-propyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (Pyr1,3 FSI) to achieve stable cycling performance and improved rate capability. The optimized cathode-electrolyte system exhibits extended cycling performance (>85% capacity retention after 300 cycles) and high rate performance (106.2mAhg–1 at 5C) even at an elevated temperature of 65 ◦C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and spatially resolved x-ray fluorescence analyses confirm the formation of a robust, LiF-rich cathode electrolyte interphase. This study presents a comprehensive design strategy to improve the electrochemical performance of high-voltage cathode materials.
Suppressing Mn Reduction of Li-Rich Mn-Based Cathodes by F-Doping for Advanced Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The Li-rich Mn-based cathode (LMR) has been considered as the most promising candidate for the next-generation secondary lithium-ion batteries. However, it suffers from structure degradation and oxygen release during cycling. To address this problem, a Li[Li0.133Mn0.467Ni0.2Co0.2]O1.95F0.05 cathode material was synthesized via polyacrylamide-assisted carbonate coprecipitation. With the partial replacement of an oxygen-metal (M-O) bond with a fluorine-metal (M-F) bond, the initial columbic efficiency, cycle performance, and voltage degradation have been improved effectively. In situ X-ray diffraction upon heating reveals that the structure stability of LMR can be improved by F-doping. The charge compensation of F-doped LMR is revealed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy during cycling. It is found that Mn reduction upon cycling can be suppressed effectively by F-doping in LMR. These results provide an in-depth understanding of F-doping effect on the optimization of Li-rich cathode materials for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Element doping of transition metal (TM) ions is commonly employed in the enhancement of structural and interfacial stability of layered nickel-rich cathode materials to construct high energy density lithium-ion batter-ies. However, one of the main factors for structural evolution and poor electrochemical stability of the layered nickel-rich cathode materials is the inherent Li+/Ni2+ disorder caused by dopants. To regulate the cation mix-ing, herein, the Li-doping is introduced into the TM slabs of the LiNiO2-based materials. Benefited from the charge compensation of the TM layers, the doped Li+ ions lead to the alleviation of the Li+/Ni2+ disorder gen-erated during the synthesis stage and electrochemical charge/discharge cycles. It is demonstrated that proper amount of the doped Li+ ions would enhance the stability of the crystal lattice, improve the Li+ diffusion between electrode and electrolyte, and suppress the microcrack formation in the secondary grains of the mate-rials. This is verified by the synergistic effect of Li/Mn co-doping, in particular, the LiNiO2-based layered mate-rial with 11 mol% Li and 1 mol% Mn exhibits great improvement in long-term cycling stability with capacity retention 71.11% after 200 cycles at 0.5C. The Li-doping strategy might provide a new perspective to the enhancement of structural stability of the layered nickel-rich materials for lithium-ion batteries in the future.

Abstract:Manganese-based layered oxides with anionic redox activity are considered as one of the most promising cathode candidates for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their abundant resources and high theoretical specific capacities. However, the severe Jahn-Teller (J-T) effect of Mn 3+ and irreversible lattice oxygen loss result in rapid structural degradation and electrochemical performance deterioration. Herein, the functioning mechanism of F-doping in regulating the local and electronic structures of Mn-based layered oxides is unraveled. The introduction of the more electronegative F ions on one hand breaks the electronic symmetry of the MnO 6 octahedra and effectively alleviates the J-T distortion, on the other hand suppresses the Zn ions migration through the strong Zn-F bonds and stabilizes the oxygen redox chemistry and facilitates the Na + diffusion. The above reaction mechanisms are systematically validated by in-situ/ex-situ analyses and theoretical computations. As a result, the optimum P2-Na 0.75 Zn 0.28 Mn 0.72 O 1.93 F 0.07 cathode demonstrates significantly improved rate capability (178.6 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C with 64.4 mAh g −1 at 10 C) and enhanced cycling durability (83.1% capacity retention over 400 cycles at 3 C) compared to the un-doped P2-Na 0.75 Zn 0.28 Mn 0.72 O 2 material. This study clarifies the F-doping mechanism in layered oxides and provides new perspectives for designing high-energy and high-stability cathodes for SIBs.

Abstract:Lithium-rich layered structure cathode materials are arousing significant attention in the next-generation commercial lithium ion batteries owing to their high capacity and energy density. However, the poor rate performance and inferior cycle stability stand in the way of its large-scale applications. In this study, we pioneer a novel cation/anion (sodium/fluorine) co-doping approach to address the above issues for lithium rich Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2 cathode. Consequently, the cation/anion co-doped cathode material could keep the advantages of both cation (sodium) and anion (fluorine), which can significantly enhance the stability by suppressing the phase transformation from layered to spinel structure and rate performance through decreasing resistance of Li diffusion and the electrons migration. The co-doped Li1.12Na0.08Ni0.2Mn0.6O1.95F0.05 exhibits an excellent cycling stability (100% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C) and a superior rate performance (167 mAh g−1 at 5 C). The mechanism of the dramatic improvement is also systematic investigated for the first time. Furthermore, we also believe that the cation/anion co-doping approach could be employed to improve the performance of other classes of layered cathode materials.
First-principles calculations to investigate the impact of fluorine doping on electrochemical properties of Li-rich Li2MnO3 layered cathode materials

Abstract:Li-rich layered oxides are promising candidates for high-capacity Li-ion battery cathode materials. In this study, we employ first-principles calculations to investigate the effect of F doping on Li-rich Li2MnO3 layered cathode materials. Our findings reveal that both Li2MnO3 and Li2MnO2.75F0.25 exhibit significant volume changes (greater than 10%) during deep delithiation, which could hinder the cycling of more Li ions from these two materials. For Li2MnO3, it is observed that oxygen ions lose electrons to compensate for charge during the delithiation process, leading to a relatively high voltage plateau. After F doping, oxidation occurs in both the cationic (Mn) and anionic (O) components, resulting in a lower voltage plateau at the beginning of the charge, which can be attributed to the oxidation of Mn3+ to Mn4+. Additionally, F doping can somewhat suppress the release of oxygen in Li2MnO3, improving the stability of anionic oxidation. However, the increase of the activation barriers for Li diffusion can be observed after F doping, due to stronger electrostatic interactions between F- and Li+, which adversely affects the cycling kinetics of Li2MnO2.75F0.25. This study enhances our understanding of the impact of F doping in Li2MnO3 based on theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Spinel lithium manganate (LiMn2O4), a commonly used cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, undergoes unfavorable processes such as irreversible phase transition and Mn2+ dissolution during long-term cycling due to the deleterious Jahn-Teller distortion, leading to rapid capacity degradation. Herein, we introduce Hf into LiMn2O4 to induce 5d-2p orbital coupling and construct a stable Mn–O framework and thus suppressing the Jahn–Teller distortion, ultimately reducing Mn dissolution and the irreversible phase transitions. As a result, the tailored Hf-doped LiMn2O4 cathode delivers an extraordinarily high capacity of 119.9 mAh g-1 at 1C, superior cyclability with 70.1% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at room temperature, and greatly enhanced rate capability. Furthermore, Hf-doped LiMn2O4 also shows good high-temperature tolerance, with 83.4% capacity retention after 400 cycles at 55 °C. This work presents an instructive contribution for constructing stable metal-oxygen framework via the introduction of orbital coupling, thus providing a promising strategy for constructing high-energy-density and high-stability cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Lithium (Li)-rich Manganese (Mn)-based cathode materials are considered to be the most hopeful cathode materials for next-generation high-energy-density Li metal batteries. However, the rapid capacity fading and voltage decaying derived from phase transformation still hinder their practical application. Herein, we developed a cation/anion dual-doping strategy by synchronically incorporating Zr4+ cation and F− anion to boost the structural stability of the Li-rich Mn-based cathode. The strengthened transition metal-oxygen bonds raised by doping effect can inhibit the release of oxygen for enhanced electrochemical reversibility and mitigate the anisotropic lattice distortion to stabilize the layered structure. Meanwhile, dual doping strategy expands the lattice distance and increases oxygen vacancy formation energy, thereby improving ion diffusion kinetics and structural stability. As a result, the obtained cathode presents an excellent initial discharge capacity of 268.5 mAh g−1 and a prolonged cycle lifespan beyond 300 cycles. A stable cycling performance can be obtained under a high areal capacity of 5.17 mAh cm−2 with a low negative/positive electrode capacity ratio of 1.93. Our dual-doping strategy provides a valuable new idea for improving the structural stability and electrochemical properties of Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials, further promoting the development of high-energy-density Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Improving the stability of Ni-rich cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries is crucial for improving their overall performance. Herein, the electrochemical performance of F-doped Li(Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1)O2 was investigated. Analysis of the calculations shows that F-doping contributes to electron transport, intercalation potential, and cycling stability, but it is detrimental to the diffusion of lithium ions. This theoretical research provides insight into the microscopic mechanism of F-doping to enhance the cycling stability of Ni-rich cathode materials and is a necessary supplement to experimental study.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:The development of the high-profile Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials is limited by the high irreversible capacity loss, low rate performance, fast voltage decay and poor cycle durability. A synergistic modification strategy of Na+ and F− co-doping is implemented via carbonate co-precipitation followed by high-temperature solid-state reaction to enhance electrochemical properties of Li1·2Mn0·54Ni0·13Co0·13O2. The co-doping changes the lattice constant and expands the lithium layer spacing while maintaining well layered structure of the cathode materials, which accelerate the Li+ diffusion. F doping reduces the ratios of Mn4+/Mn3+ and Co3+/Co2+ from the transition metal valence state analysis and alleviates the erosion of the cathode materials with the electrolyte, preventing the dissolution of the transition metal ions. Besides, the structure evolution reveals that the Na+ and F− co-doping inhibits the transition metal ions transfer, thus blocking the spinel phase formation and stabilizing the layered structure of the cathode materials. As a consequence, co-doped cathode materials exhibit the synergistic advantages of both Na+ and F− ions, including increased initial reversible capacity (291.3 mAh g−1@0.1 C), considerably superior rate capability (144.3 mAh g−1@5 C), and remarkable cycle durability (84.8% retention even after 300 cycles). This study provides an alternative modification strategy for Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials with outstanding electrochemical performances.

Abstract:The ever-growing demand for Li-ion batteries requires high-capacity electrode materials that should also be environmentally benign, Co-free, secure and durable, to achieve an optimal compromise between sustainability and functional performances. Spinel LiMn2O4 (LMO) is a state-of-the-art material, which, in principle, could satisfy such requirements. However, an undesired cubic-tetragonal phase transition favors Jahn-Teller (J-T) spinel distortion, leading to severe capacity reduction upon cycling below 3 V. Here, we propose a dual-doping strategy for LMO, based on the partial substitution of Mn(III) with Fe(III) and Ti(IV) to design new active materials for high-capacity cathodes, namely LiFexMn2-x-yTiyO4 (LFMT), with Li/Mn ratio ranging between 1 and 1.7. The substitution of Mn with Fe and Ti suppresses the J-T distortion, which is often still evident in the case of Ti-doped LMO. This allows cycling in a wider voltage range (4.8-1.5 V), thus resulting in higher capacity and significantly improved stability. The lithiation mechanisms were investigated by combining ex-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS analyses). It demonstrated that the only redox-active metal is Mn, while Fe and Ti are electrochemically inactive. The extensive electrochemical lithiation/delithiation of the LFMT compositions brought to unprecedented results, which give evidence of stabilizing cation disorder through the formation of Mn-rich and Mn-poor domains, which leades to two spinel phases with different Mn:Ti ratios. These insights into the lithiation mechanism pave the way for a better understanding of the doping chemistry and electrochemistry of Mn-based spinels as cathode materials for Li-ion batteries.
Enhanced Electrochemical Performance of the Lithium-Manganese-Rich Cathode for Li-Ion Batteries with Na and F CoDoping

Abstract:The lithium-manganese-rich layered oxide cathode (LMR-NMC), xLi2MnO3·(1 – x)LiMO2 (M = Co, Ni, and Mn), is on demand because of its high specific capacity of over 250 mA h g–1 between the voltage range 2.0–4.8 V (vs Li/Li+). Because of the requirement of activating the Li2MnO3 phase in the first cycle, oxygen extraction from the lattice structure occurs. Consequently, capacity fading and voltage fading during cycling are still major obstacles to the commercialization of LMR-NMC in battery applications. Here, codoping Na and F into LMR-NMC via facile hydroxide coprecipitation followed by solid-state reaction is introduced. Na and F are partially substituted into Li and O sites, respectively. These dopant ions enlarge the Li slab, which in turn eases Li diffusion and minimizes oxygen loss, thereby stabilizing the structure. The codoped sample exhibits both high capacity retention (97%) and high voltage retention (91%) over 100 cycles with an initial discharge capacity of 260 mA h g–1 at 0.1 C. Compared to other reports on LMR-NMC as obtained by coprecipitation, results from this study show the best capacity retention. The developed codoping approach may provide a new strategy for designing high-performance LMR-NMC cathodes for next-generation lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:This study calculates the energy band structure and density of states of Lithium manganese fluorophosphate (Li 2 MnPO 4 F, a lithium transition metal phosphate compounds) using the first-principles plane-wave pseudopotential approach within the density-functional theory. The model of Li 2 M 0.5 Mn 0.5 PO 4 F (M = V, Ni) with transition metal doped Mn sites is constructed by using the CASTEP module. The calculation findings indicate that the transition metal doping can regulate the energy band structure of the intrinsic system, and Li 2 MnPO 4 F makes the band gap decrease, and the volume increase with the Li ions of being deintercalated, and the electrons can be readily stimulated from the valence band to the conduction band. The findings indicate that Li 2 MnPO 4 F is a favorable cathode material for high-voltage lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The introduction of vanadium (V) and nickel (Ni) doping reduces the band gap, facilitating an easier excitation of electrons from the valence band to the conduction band. This study provides a theoretical study of new cathode materials for high performance LIBs.

Abstract:Spinel LiMn2O4 has the advantages of high voltage, high safety, low pollution, low cost, and rich resources. However, its low initial capacity, rapid-cycle decay, and other factors hinder its commercialization process. In this paper, a pure phase LiMn2O4 is synthesized by a high-temperature solid-phase method, and the element doping is used to modify it to improve its cycle performance. The results show that the optimal process conditions for preparing LiMn2O4 are: the Li/Mn ratio is 1.05:2, the calcination temperature is 780°C, and the calcination time is 15 hours. X-ray diffractometer reveals that the samples prepared by Al3+ and F− co-doping are still typical spinel structures. Scanning electron microscope shows that the sample is single-crystal Li1.05Al0.02Mn1.98F0.02O3.98 with uniform grain distribution and regular morphology. The sample has excellent cycle performance, and its initial discharge specific capacity is 115.5 mAh g−1 at 0.1C. The capacity retention rate is still above 80% after 367 cycles, and the specific capacity is 90.3 mAh g−1. The Al-F co-doped LiMn2O4 single-crystal material can effectively inhibit the Jahn-Teller effect, alleviate the dissolution of Mn, as well as increase the diffusion channel of Li+. This work provides a theoretical basis for promoting the development of LiMn2O4 cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Li-rich layered oxides are identified as the most promising cathode material for lithium ion batteries due to their high specific capacity and energy density. However, capacity fading, voltage decay and inferior rate capability have restricted its development in industry. Herein, we developed a novel cation/anion (chromium/fluorine) co-doping methods to enhance the electrochemical performance of Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy images reveal the perfect crystal structure. The Cr and F co-doped Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 shows the best discharge specific capacity, the highest rate performance and the lowest voltage decay. The initial discharge capacity is improved from 264.4 to 273.7 mAhg−1. The capacity retention ratio is enhanced from 78.84% to 94.46% after 50 cycles. The Rct (charge transfer resistance) is decreased from 556.1Ω to 199.5Ω. The lower Rct and higher DLi+ of the Cr and F co-doped Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 contribute to the excellent rate capability. More importantly, the co-doped material exhibits elevated discharge voltage and shows lower discharge mean voltage decay (0.2945 V) than that of the pristine material (0.4396 V). These results fully suggest that cation and anion doping could effectively improve the electrochemical performances of Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2.

Abstract:The substitution of F for O increased the initial specific capacity of the cathode material LiMn_2O_4 at the cost of the cycleability .The explanation of this results was that F-dopant decreased the valence of Mn,that is, more Mn~(3+) and less Mn~(4+) existed in the material. The increase of Mn~(3+) elevated the initial specific capacity, however, Mn~(3+) was the original reason of Jahn-Teller effect which caused the poor cycleability of the cathode material by the micro-distortion of the crystal structure. In addition, the increase of Mn~(3+) intensified the amount of dissolution, accordingly, the cyclability was deteriorated. Despite the poor cyclability, the effect of increasing capacity of F-dopant can probably compensate the defect of cation-dopant.

Abstract:Li-rich materials, due to their high capacity (> 250 mAh·g−1), have recently been considered as an alternative to the current generation of cathode materials for Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, their inferior cycling stability limits their practical applicability. Doping is a common technique to solve this problem. However, anion doping remains relatively underexplored. Fluorine (F) is one of the most effective anion dopants owning to the improved capacity, cycling stability, and rate performance in batteries. The explanations and experimental results, however, vary significantly from study to study. Herein, we find that bulk F-doping significantly improves both rate performance and cycling stability, likely driven by charge compensation and greater electronegativity. Additionally, bulk F-doping occasionally improves capacity via enhanced activation and occasionally decreases capacity by preventing activation from occurring. Surface F-doping has similar effects to bulk F-doping on capacity and stability, while significantly hindering the rate performance. Furthermore, the improvements in surface-doped materials do not appear to be a result of specific surface modification, and instead can be ascribed to the effect of fluorine on the near-surface bulk material. Greater understanding of fluorine's influence on activation, in particular, is required to unlock the full potential of synergistic cation/anion co-doping.

Abstract:The development of cobalt-free P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 cathodes is hampered by poor electrochemical performance, resulting from structural instability during high-voltage cycling. Herein, Li+ and F− ions are introduced simultaneously via a simple sol–gel method. The F not only enters the lattice but forms chemically stable NaF on the surface. The modified electrode delivered significantly better electrochemical performance than the pristine one, including much-enhanced capacity retention (64% vs. 36%, 100 cycles) at 0.5 C and a four-time higher capacity output at 10 C. The ex situ XRD and in situ Raman analysis revealed cyclability enhancement mechanisms in terms of inhibiting the P2–O2 phase transition and Na+/vacancy ordering. The conductivity measurements (based on AC impedance and DC polarization) and GITT analysis proved, on both bulk material and electrode levels, that Na+ conduction and, thus, rate performance is notably promoted by doping. The individual contribution of Li and F to the overall performance improvement was also discussed. Furthermore, a solid-state sodium-metal battery was successfully demonstrated with the modified cathode. The above results verify that Li+/F− incorporation can enable enhancements in both cyclability and rate capability of the P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 cathodes and are expected to provide a new perspective for the rational design of high-performance layered oxide cathode materials for progressive sodium-ion batteries.

Enhancing the Power Capability of Lithium-Rich Manganese-Based Layered Oxide Cathodes by LaF3 Modification

Abstract:Lithium-rich manganese-based layered oxides, such as Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 (LNCM), are promising cathodes that possess both ultrahigh-specific capacity and high working voltage, yet they have not been commercialized due to intrinsic challenges. These challenges include sluggish Li-ion diffusion kinetics and structural degradation from the layered structure to a spinel-like form, leading to poor power capability and severe capacity fading. To address these challenges, we have developed a modification technique that involves fusing LaF3-decorated with La/F-doping. Protecting the electrode/electrolyte interface, inert LaF3 particles decorate on the LNCM surface impede interfacial side reactions. La-doping near the surface enlarges the Li layer spacing and facilitates Li-ion diffusion. A stronger TM -F bond is formed when F diffuses into the bulk phase and replaces O, thereby decreasing the migration of TM. The resulting LaF3-modified LNCM exhibits a high capacity of 256.1 mAh g-1 at 0.1C and a high-power capability of 3555 W kg -1 at 10C, which is 2.5 times higher than the pristine sample. We also elucidate the relationship between the structures (i.e., oxidation state of elements, bond energy, mechanical properties, and conductivity) and electrochemical behaviors (i.e., impedance and Li-ion diffusion) to explain why the modification of LaF3 improves the power property of the LNCM.

Abstract:Lithium-rich manganese-based materials (LRM) are regarded as promising next-generation commercial cathodes due to their exceptionally high capacities and working voltages. However, lithium-rich manganese-based materials are plagued with inferior cyclic stability and voltage fading, which greatly stifled their commercial transitions. In this work, the dopant F and Mg uniformly distributed lithium-rich manganese-based cathode material is firstly prepared via an in-situ co-precipitation and high-temperature calcination method. The F and Mg co-doped sample can demonstrate excellent cyclic stability (88.56%, after 100 cycles at 1 C), and higher initial discharge and coulombic efficiency by reducing the transition metal (TM) loss and structure stabilization. Thus, this work presents crucial findings in the development of lithium-rich manganese-based materials, which provides a novel doping route and a vital method of cation-anion co-doping to prepare high-performing cathodes.
