Abstract:With the ever-increasing demands of electrochemical energy storage, lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have drawn more attention because of their superior theoretical energy density and high specific capacity. However, practical applications of Li–S batteries suffer from problems such as low conductivity of sulfur and discharged products, severe polysulfide shuttling effect, and large volume change of sulfur during cycling, resulting in sluggish rate performance, and unsatisfactory cycle life. Various nanostructured carbon materials have been served as barrier layers to overcome these problems. In particular, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with unique 1D nanostructure, have been introduced to Li–S batteries as the intermediate layers because of its superior flexibility, excellent electrical conductivity, and good chemical stability. Moreover, CNTs and CNTs-based barrier layers could also curb lithium polysulfides shuttling. In the minireview, we summarize recent works of CNTs-based materials as modifying interlayers for Li–S batteries. In addition, the strategies to enhance electrochemical performances of the batteries are summarized and discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects for future research of CNTs-based materials as interlayer are proposed. We hope this review will be useful for designing and fabricating high-performance Li–S batteries and boost their practical applications.

Abstract:With the rapid developments of electric vehicles and smart grids, the ever-growing demands for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and their further application will probably be impeded by limited lithium resources. In this context, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have been regarded as highly promising alternatives for LIBs due to the abundant sodium resources and similar electrochemical properties of this element. As promising electrode materials for SIBs, carbon nanotube (CNT)-based nanomaterials have received considerable attention because of their superior characteristics, such as their unique 1D nanostructure, large specific surface area, high conductivity, excellent flexibility and chemical stability. This article reviews recent advances in CNT-based electrode materials, including cathode materials and anode materials for SIBs. In addition, strategies to improve their electrochemical performance are concluded and discussed. Finally, challenges and prospects for future development of CNT-based electrode materials for SIBs are proposed.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries ( LIBs) are extensively used in numerous portable devices such as smart-phones and laptops. However, current LIBs based on the conventional intercalation mechanism cannot meet the requirements of the electronics industry and electric vehicles although they are approaching their theoretical capacity. Therefore, it is extremely urgent to seek for systems with higher energy densities. Among various promising candidates, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with a high theoretical capacity are very attractive. However, the commercial use of Li-S batteries still faces obstacles such as the low electrical conductivity of sul-fur and lithium sulfide and the dissolution of polysulfides. The introduction of nanocarbon materials into Li-S batteries sheds light on the efficient utilization of sulfur by improving the conductivity of the composites and restraining the shuttle effect of polysulfides. Here, we give a brief review of recent progress on carbon/ sulfur composites, especially carbon nanotube-, graphene-and porous car-bon-based hybrids, new insights on the relationships between the structure and the electrochemical performance, and propose some important aspects for the future development of Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) play very important roles in the field of lithium batteries. In this talk, research progress on the applications of CNTs as conductive additives and polysulfide barriers will be presented. In one aspect, CNTs are used as conductive additives and growth template for synthesis of nano sulfur−CNT composite material. The conductive CNT matrix not only avoids self-aggregation and ensures dispersive distribution of the sulfur nanocrystals, but also offers three-dimensional continuous electron pathway, provides sufficient porosity in the matrix to benefit electrolyte infiltration, confines the sulfur/polysulfides, and accommodates the volume variations of sulfur during cycling. Furthermore, abundant mesopores are introduced to CNTs through controlled oxidation in the air to obtain porous carbon nanotubes (PCNTs) that demonstrate improved dispersive behavior, enhanced conductivity, and higher mechanical strength. Large surface area and abundant adsorption points on tubes are introduced, which allow high sulfur loading, provide dual protection to sulfur cathode materials, and consequently alleviate the capacity fade especially during slow charge/discharge processes. Electrodes with a high sulfur loading of 70wt% demonstrate excellent reversible capacities and improved high-rate capability, revealing efficient suppression of polysulfide dissolution. In another aspect, ultrathin and lightweight interlayers based on CNT film and metal oxides/ sulfides/phosphides are developed as efficient polysulfide-trapping shields for high-performance Li–S batteries. A simple layer-by-layer procedure is used to construct a sandwiched vein-membrane interlayer by loading MnO2/MoS2/MoP2 nanoparticles on cross-stacked CNT films. The CNT film acts as a skeleton to support the MnO2/MoS2/MoP2 nanoparticles and to ensure their uniform distribution, and also physically hinders the polysulfide migration. The conductive CNT film also serves as a current collector and provides abundant electron pathways. Chemical adsorption of polysulfides is achieved by MnO2, MoS2, and MoP2 nanoparticles on the CNT film. The synergetic effect of the CNT film and the MnO2/MoS2/MoP2 nanoparticles enables the production of Li–S cells with high sulfur loadings, low capacity decay rate, high rate performance, and low self-discharge rate. In-situ Raman spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results, and density functional theory calculations demonstrate the strong interaction between metal oxides/sulfides/phosphides and polysulfides and confirm the polysulfide-trapping ability of the CNT based interlayer. These results demonstrate the great potential of CNTs in developing high-performance Li–S batteries.
Research Progress on Carbon Nano-Materials to Construct Li-ion and Li-S Batteries of High Performance

Abstract:Carbon solely can form a lot of nanostructures, such as zero-dimensional nanosphere, one-dimensional nanotube and two-dimensional graphene. They perform differently in Li-ion and Li-S batteries. It is worth noting that CNTs and graphene are not appropriate to be used as electroactive materials for Li-ion or Li-S batteries for four reasons. First, when CNTs and graphene are used as an anode, they often exhibit high specific capacities during the first lithiation step, but a large fraction of lithium ions is irreversibly consumed instead of reversibly stored, leading to a low Coulombic efficiency of the cell. Second, a graphene-based anode has a large voltage hysteresis in the charge/discharge curves. Third, it has been reported a CNT-based anode lacks a steady voltage plateau with large change in voltage during discharge. Fourth, despite their high initial capacities, graphene and CNT-based anodes often suffer from fast capacity decay after a few tens of cycles. Continuous efforts have been made to build better lithium batteries with a higher energy density and wider applicability, including both current state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries and near-term Li-S batteries. Because the behavior of a rechargeable battery is mainly based on the performance of its anode and cathode, designing advanced electrode materials as well as electrode with tailored compositions and structures has been the hot topic in recent years. The role of carbon nano-materials to construct electrode materials and tailored electrodes in Li-ion and Li-S batteries in high performance was reviewed in the paper from three aspects. Firstly, the role of carbon nano-materials in modifying the electroactive materials was discussed from three aspects:electron- and ion-transport facilitators, immobilization sites and volume expansion buffering. Secondly, the role of carbon nano-materials in optimizing the inactive components was considered as follows:conducting additives, current collectors and conductive interlayers. Thirdly, the role of carbon nano-materials in designing the bendable and stretchable devices are discussed from three aspects:conductive phases in nonconductive substrates, flexible current collectors and freestanding composite electrode. Finally, perspectives on future development of Li-ion and Li-S batteries were presented. It is considered that multi-functional carbon nano-materials will be main research focus in the future.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are attracting much attention due to their high energy densities. However, Li-S batteries often suffer from low Coulombic efficiency, severe degradation of cyclic capacity, and low utilization of active sulfur material because of the low electrical conductivity of sulfur and the severe shuttle effect. To solve these issues, various nanostructured carbon-based materials have been developed to serve as the sulfur host materials, modify separators and protect lithium (Li) anode due to their good conductivity, large surface area, and electrochemical stability. In this review, a brief introduction of electrochemical principles and prospects of the Li-S batteries are discussed firstly. Then the recent achievements and challenges of nanostructured carbon-based materials in Li-S batteries are summarized. The nanostructured carbon-based materials focus on active carbon, carbon nanotubes, graphene and their composites. The role of these carbon-based materials in Li-S batteries emphasize on the design of sulfur host materials, the modification of functional separators as well as the protection of the Li anode. Furthermore, various flexible Li-S batteries based on freestanding nanostructured carbon/sulfur electrodes are also presented. Finally, the further developments and prospects in this field are also discussed.

Abstract:Commercial lithium-ion batteries are gradually approaching their theoretical values (200-250 Wh kg-1), which cannot meet the fast-growing energy storage demands. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are anticipated to supersede lithium-ion batteries as the next-generation energy storage system owing to their high theoretical specific capacity (1675 mAh g-1) and energy density (2600 Wh kg-1). Nonetheless, Li-S batteries encounter several challenges, including the inadequate conductivity of sulfur and lithium sulfide, sulfur's volume expansion, and the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides, all of which significantly impact the practical utilization of Li-S batteries. Electrospun carbon-based nanofibers can simultaneously resolve these issues with their economical preparation, distinctive nanostructure, and exceptional flexibility. This review presents the most recent research findings on electrospun carbon-based nanofibers materials serving as sulfur hosts and interlayer components in Li-S batteries. We analyzed the impact of the material's structural design on the performance of Li-S batteries and the relative underlying mechanism. Finally, the current challenges and issues faced by carbon-based nanofibers composites in the application of Li-S batteries are summarized, and the future development trajectory are outlined.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) have become promising next–generation energy storage technologies for electric vehicles and portable electronics, due to its excellent theoretical specific energy. However, the low conductivity of sulfur species, notorious lithium dendrites, the severe "shuttle effect" of polysulfides (LiPSs) and the inferior kinetic reaction for LiPSs/Li2S conversion during discharge–charge have seriously hindered their practical application, and also pose potential safety hazards. Owing to their superior porous architectures, high specific surface areas, excellent structural designability, functional modifiability, abundant active sites and flexibility of carbon–containing electrospun nanofibers (CENFs), they exhibited the superior characteristics that can simultaneously solve the above issues. In this review, we summarize the recent progress and application of CENFs in LSBs. First, we provide a brief introduction to the structure and composition controlled of carbon nanofibers by electrospinning. We then review progress in recent developments of CENFs for LSBs including cathodes, anodes, separators, and interlayers. We focus on how to solve practical issues that arise when the CENFs are applied to various parts of LSBs, and the relevant working mechanisms are described, from high sulfur loading and Li dendrites suppression to LiPSs' confinement and conversion. Finally, we summarize and propose the existing challenges and future prospects of CENFs, for the design and architecture of electrochemical components in Li–S energy storage systems.

Abstract:In recent years, lithium batteries have become energy storage methods in many fields for their advantages of high energy density, and many fields such as civil electric vehicles, electronic products, and aerospace rely on lithium batteries. At present, the performance demand for lithium batteries in electric vehicles is increasing, and finding ways to improve the performance of lithium batteries has become a top priority. Since silicon has the highest theoretical specific capacity, carbon nanotube technology is relatively mature, and the research and development prospects of new negative electrode materials for nano-batteries are broad. This paper analyzes the different influences of nano-silicon-based materials, carbon nanotubes modified by new materials and new negative nano-lithium materials on lithium batteries from nanomaterials. And summarize their respective roles to help readers further understand the application of nanomaterials in lithium batteries. Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are known as a prospective new generation of battery systems owing to their high energy density, low cost, non-toxicity, and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, several issues remain in the practical application of Li-S batteries, such as low sulfur usage, poor rate performance, and poor cycle stability. Ordered microporous carbon materials and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can effectively limit the diffusion of polysulfides (LiPSs) and have high electrical conductivity, respectively. Here, inspired by the evaporation of zinc at high temperatures, we constructed CNTs interpenetrating ordered microporous carbon nanospheres (CNTs/OMC NSs) by high-temperature calcination and used them as a sulfur host material. With the benefit from the excellent electrical conductivity of CNTs and OMC achieving uniform sulfur dispersion and effectively limiting LiPS dissolution, the S@CNTs/OMC NS cathodes show outstanding cycling stability (initial discharge capacity of 879 mAh g-1 at 0.5 C, maintained at 629 mAh g-1 for 500 cycles) and excellent rate performance (521 mAh g-1 at 5.0 C). Furthermore, the current study can serve as a significant reference for the synthesis of CNTs that interpenetrate various materials.

Abstract:Lithium‐sulfur batteries (LSBs) are among the most promising next generation electrochemical energy storage systems due to their ultrahigh energy density, which has attracted enormous attentions. Nevertheless, the development and application of LSBs are still subject to some major technical obstacles such as the insulating nature of sulfur, the shuttle effect of intermediate polysulfides, and the drastic volume expansion. To overcome these challenges, various strategies have been employed to promote the performance of LSBs. This review focuses on summarizing the major development of novel nanostructured carbon hosts for advanced LSBs. The carbon nanotubes, graphene, and carbon spheres are introduced to improve our understanding of the morphology effects on LSBs. The heterogeneous atom‐doping, unique hollow structures are summarized to investigate the chemical bonding effects during the charge/discharge process. The organic framework derived carbon structures are discussed to inspire us to find novel routes to enhance the performance of LSBs. Finally, the conclusions and prospects of nanostructured carbon in LSBs are proposed, while the challenges in the further development of LSBs are also discussed.

Abstract:To further enhance the properties of batteries, it is important to exploit new electrode materials. Carbon fiber has been found to play a crucial role. Various batteries, such as Lithium-ion batteries, Lithium-sulfur batteries, Sodium-ion batteries, and Vanadium redox flow batteries, have been investigated. Moreover, greatly improved performance has been obtained by compositing pure carbon fibers with the metal materials, metallic oxide materials, metallic sulfide materials, carbon materials and so on. Through the application of carbon materials and their compounds in various types of batteries, the battery performance has obviously been improved. This review primarily introduces carbon fiber materials for battery applications. The relationship between the architecture of the material and its electrochemical performance is analyzed in detail. In addition, the development of the history, unsolved problems and prospects with respect to the introduction of carbon fibers are also included.

Abstract:The lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery has received considerable attention in the field of energy conversion and storage due to its high energy density and eco-friendliness. Significant academic and commercial progress has been made in Li-ion battery technologies. One area of advancement has been the addition of nanofiber materials to Li-ion batteries due to their unique and desirable structural features including large aspect ratios, high surface areas, controllable chemical compositions, and abundant composite forms. In the past few decades, considerable research efforts have been devoted to constructing advanced nanofiber materials possessing conductive networks to facilitate efficient electron transport and large specific surface areas to support catalytically active sites, both for the purpose of boosting electrochemical performance. Herein, we focus on recent advancements of nanofiber materials with carefully designed structures and enhanced electrochemical properties for use in Li-ion batteries. The synthesis, structure, and properties of nanofiber cathodes, anodes, separators, and electrolytes, and their applications in Li-ion batteries are discussed. The research challenges and prospects of nanofiber materials in Li-ion battery applications are delineated.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:A free-standing sulfur/nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (S/N-CNT) composite prepared via a simple solution method was first studied as a cathode material for lithium/sulfur batteries. By taking advantage of the self-weaving behavior of N-CNT, binders and current collectors are rendered unnecessary in the cathode, thereby simplifying its manufacturing and increasing the sulfur weight ratio in the electrode. Transmission electronic microscopy showed the formation of a highly developed core-shell tubular structure consisting of S/N-CNT composite with uniform sulfur coating on the surface of N-CNT. As a core in the composite, the N-CNT with N functionalization provides a highly conductive and mechanically flexible framework, enhancing the electronic conductivity and consequently the rate capability of the material.

Abstract:Lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries are in the spotlight because their outstanding theoretical specific energy is much higher than those of the commercial lithium ion (Li‐ion) batteries. Li‐S batteries are tough competitors for future‐developing energy storage in the fields of portable electronics and electric vehicles. However, the severe "shuttle effect" of the polysulfides and the serious damage of lithium dendrites are main factors blocking commercial production of Li‐S batteries. Owing to their superior nanostructure, electrospun nanofiber materials commonly show some unique characteristics that can simultaneously resolve these issues. So far, various novel cathodes, separators, and interlayers of electrospun nanofiber materials which are applied to resolve these challenges are researched. This review presents the fundamental research and technological development of multifarious electrospun nanofiber materials for Li‐S cells, including their processing methods, structures, morphology engineering, and electrochemical performance. Not only does the review article contain a summary of electrospun nanofiber materials in Li‐S batteries but also a proposal for designing electrospun nanofiber materials for Li‐S cells. These systematic discussions and proposed directions can enlighten thoughts and offer ways in the reasonable design of electrospun nanofiber materials for excellent Li‐S batteries in the near future.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur battery as one of the most promising and attractive candidate among the emerging electrical energy storage has attracted enormous attentions. It has superior characteristics of high specific energy density (2600Wh kg(-1)) and high theoretical specific capacity (1675 mAh g(-1)), which is equal to 3-5 times of lithium-ion batteries, and more closed to the requirement of the pure electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. Furthermore, sulfur element is inexpensive, naturally abundant, and environmentally friendly. However, the commercial application of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) still faces some major technical obstacles such as the low electrical conductivity of sulfur, the shuttle effect of polysulfides, and the drastic volume expansion during charge/discharge process. In this review paper, we focus on some of the effective strategies in boosting the electrochemical performance of LSBs through the development of sulfur/carbon composite electrode materials, including the use of porous carbons, carbon nanotubes/fibers, and graphene. The integration of carbon materials and sulfur can efficiently improve the utilization of active materials, enhance the conductivity of cathode materials, and provide a polysulfides barrier. Simultaneously, the challenges and prospects on LSBs in the near future are also presented and discussed.

Abstract:The field of lithium-sulfur batteries has benefited enormously from the advances in nanotechnology. At each step of technological improvement, lithium-sulfur batteries have relied upon techniques and methodologies brought upon by nanotechnology. Nanoporous material, heterogeneous nanocomposite, and hierarchical electrode developments have all been well-established as critical milestones for lithium-sulfur batteries. This review will briefly discuss the specific major roles of nanotechnology in lithium-sulfur batteries regarding practically relevant testing conditions in addition to research trends and future directions for electrocatalysis.
Preparation and properties of carbon-modified Ni-CNT@C applied to high-performance lithium-sulfur battery

Abstract:In this study, we developed a novel carrier material (Ni-CNT@C) by using a hard template method and in situ growth of carbon nanotubes within a porous carbon framework. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the electrochemical properties of this material. Our results show that Ni-CNT@C features a highly porous, hierarchical structure that significantly enhances the catalytic activity. This structure reduces the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides and improves their utilization rate. Electrochemical tests reveal that the Ni-CNT@C/S-based battery achieves an impressive initial discharge capacity of 1212 mAh/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g. After 100 cycles, the battery retains a capacity of 849 mAh/g. At a higher current density of 1 A/g, the capacity remains at 585 mAh/g after 300 cycles. Remarkably, at a current density of 5 A/g, the battery maintains a substantial capacity of 362 mAh/g. Furthermore, reducing the current density to 0.1 A/g causes the capacity to rebound to 933 mAh/g, showcasing the exceptional rate performance of the Ni-CNT@C/S cathode material. Additionally, extensive adsorption tests and impedance analyses confirm the superior polysulfide adsorption capability of Ni-CNT@C. This approach integrates the catalytic properties of nickel, the unique structural features of carbon materials, and nitrogen doping, providing a promising solution to the challenges faced by lithium-sulfur batteries.
