Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered as a promising candidate for next-generation energy-storage devices due to their high energy density, low cost, and ecofriendliness. However, the practical application of Li-S batteries faces challenges arising from the cathode, the electrolyte, and the anode, including the intrinsically low conductivity of sulfur and lithium sulfide (Li2S), the high solubility of polysulfides in the electrolytes commonly used, and the dendrite growth of metallic lithium anodes. In recent years, much effort has been made to improve the performance of Li-S batteries by modifying the cathode, host material, binder, electrolyte, membrane, anode, and cell configuration. Here, the focus is on the cathode aspect, and the design and surface modification of nanostructured host materials for sulfur and Li2S are investigated in detail.

Abstract:Rechargeable Li-S batteries have become attractive for next-generation energy storage technology due to their high specific energy, low cost, and materials earth abundance. However, the Li-S technology has not been successfully commercialized because of several outstanding challenges including fast capacity fading, low Coulombic efficiency, and limited rate capability. Over the past few years, considerable efforts have been devoted to solving the challenges associated with the sulfur cathode. In thismini review, we summarize our recent advances in Li-S cathodes, such as the understanding of the nano-size effect in sulfur materials, the design of polymer functional additives, and the realization of a novel in situ wrapping approach for Li-S cathodes. The current Li-S technology calls for a rational design of the Li-S cathode that can lead to excellent overall performance of Li-S batteries. (C) The Author(s) 2017. Published by ECS.

Abstract:The preparation, characteristics and electrochemical performances of the sulfur-based cathode materials in lithium/sulfur batteries are reviewed in this paper. The elemental sulfur cathode material is briefly introduced. The structural designs, preparation processes, reaction mechanisms, and charge/discharge properties of organic sulfide, sulfur-porous carbon and sulfur-polymer composites as cathode materials are systematically discussed and problems associated with these materials are also analyzed. In addition, the research and application of lithium sulfides as cathode materials are also outlined. Finally, the further development of sulfur-based cathode materials and the commercialization of lithium/sulfur batteries are discussed.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries (Li-S) are regarded as a promising candidate for next-generation energy storage systems due to their high specific capacity (1675 mA h g-1) and energy density (2600 W h kg-1) as well as the abundance, safety and low cost of sulfur materials. However, many disadvantages hinder the further development of Li-S batteries, such as the insulating nature of the active materials, the dissolution of intermediate products, large volume expansion and safety concerns related to metal lithium anodes. During the past decade, tremendous efforts have been made in the design and synthesis of electrode materials. In this review, we briefly discuss the electrochemical mechanism of Li-S batteries and their practical problems. Then, we systematically summarize the current strategies for designing cathode materials with stable and long cycling performance, including sulfur cathodes and Li2S cathodes; subsequently, the current development of solid-state electrolytes and protective strategies for lithium metal anodes are briefly discussed. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives of Li-S batteries are presented.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries are among the rising rechargeable batteries due to their high energy density, theoretical capacity, and low cost. However, their large-scale application is delayed by several challenges, such as degradation due to polysulfide dissolution, low conductivity, and other restricting factors. Li-S batteries have undergone decades of development aimed at improving battery performance by altering the electrode material to overcome these challenges. In the meantime, due to the depletion of fossil fuels and growing energy demand, the need for changes in processes to improve battery performance is now more urgent than ever. Carbon-based materials like conducting polymers, carbon nanotubes, Graphene, and activated Carbon have gained extensive attention due to their low cost, easy availability, good cycling stability, and exceptional electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. Here, we summarize recent progress in carbon-based electrode material in Li-S batteries, the development of electrolytes, and progress in adopting lithium-sulfur batteries as flexible devices. Furthermore, a comparison of Li-S batteries based on similar parameters with its rechargeable battery competitors is discussed and a comparison with other non-carbon-based electrodes used in the lithium-sulfur battery is also examined. Finally, a general conclusion and future directions are given.

Abstract:The field of lithium-sulfur batteries has benefited enormously from the advances in nanotechnology. At each step of technological improvement, lithium-sulfur batteries have relied upon techniques and methodologies brought upon by nanotechnology. Nanoporous material, heterogeneous nanocomposite, and hierarchical electrode developments have all been well-established as critical milestones for lithium-sulfur batteries. This review will briefly discuss the specific major roles of nanotechnology in lithium-sulfur batteries regarding practically relevant testing conditions in addition to research trends and future directions for electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Lithium‐based batteries possessing energy densities much higher than those of the conventional batteries belong to the most promising class of future energy devices. However, there are some fundamental issues related to their electrodes which are big roadblocks in their applications to electric vehicles (EVs). Nanochemistry has advantageous roles to overcome these problems by defining new nanostructures of electrode materials. This review article will highlight the challenges associated with these chemistries both to bring high performance and longevity upon considering the working principles of the various types of lithium‐based (Li‐ion, Li‐air and Li‐S) batteries. Further, the review discusses the advantages and challenges of nanomaterials in nanostructured electrodes of lithium‐based batteries, concerns with lithium metal anode and the recent advancement in electrode nanostructures.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are promising electrochemical energy storage systems because of their high theoretical energy density, natural abundance, and environmental benignity. However, several problems such as the insulating nature of sulfur, high solubility of polysulfides, large volume variation of the sulfur cathode, and safety concerns regarding the lithium anode hinder the commercialization of Li-S batteries. Graphene-based materials, with advantages such as high conductivity and good flexibility, have shown effectiveness in realizing Li-S batteries with high energy density and high stability. These materials can be used as the cathode matrix, separator coating layer, and anode protection layer. In this review, the recent progress of graphene-based materials used in Li-S batteries, including graphene, functionalized graphene, heteroatom-doped graphene, and graphene-based composites, has been summarized. And perspectives regarding the development trend of graphene-based materials for Li-S batteries have been discussed.

Abstract:Room-temperature sodium–sulfur (RT Na–S) batteries are considered to be a competitive electrochemical energy storage system, due to their advantages in abundant natural reserves, inexpensive materials, and superb theoretical energy density. Nevertheless, RT Na–S batteries suffer from a series of critical challenges, especially on the S cathode side, including the insulating nature of S and its discharge products, volumetric fluctuation of S species during the (de)sodiation process, shuttle effect of soluble sodium polysulfides, and sluggish conversion kinetics. Recent studies have shown that nanostructural designs of S-based materials can greatly contribute to alleviating the aforementioned issues via their unique physicochemical properties and architectural features. In this review, we review frontier advancements in nanostructure engineering strategies of S-based cathode materials for RT Na–S batteries in the past decade. Our emphasis is focused on delicate and highly efficient design strategies of material nanostructures as well as interactions of component–structure–property at a nanosize level. Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are attracting much attention due to their high energy densities. However, Li-S batteries often suffer from low Coulombic efficiency, severe degradation of cyclic capacity, and low utilization of active sulfur material because of the low electrical conductivity of sulfur and the severe shuttle effect. To solve these issues, various nanostructured carbon-based materials have been developed to serve as the sulfur host materials, modify separators and protect lithium (Li) anode due to their good conductivity, large surface area, and electrochemical stability. In this review, a brief introduction of electrochemical principles and prospects of the Li-S batteries are discussed firstly. Then the recent achievements and challenges of nanostructured carbon-based materials in Li-S batteries are summarized. The nanostructured carbon-based materials focus on active carbon, carbon nanotubes, graphene and their composites. The role of these carbon-based materials in Li-S batteries emphasize on the design of sulfur host materials, the modification of functional separators as well as the protection of the Li anode. Furthermore, various flexible Li-S batteries based on freestanding nanostructured carbon/sulfur electrodes are also presented. Finally, the further developments and prospects in this field are also discussed.

Abstract:<p>Lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries are in the spotlight because their outstanding theoretical specific energy is much higher than those of the commercial lithium ion (Li‐ion) batteries. Li‐S batteries are tough competitors for future‐developing energy storage in the fields of portable electronics and electric vehicles. However, the severe "shuttle effect" of the polysulfides and the serious damage of lithium dendrites are main factors blocking commercial production of Li‐S batteries. Owing to their superior nanostructure, electrospun nanofiber materials commonly show some unique characteristics that can simultaneously resolve these issues. So far, various novel cathodes, separators, and interlayers of electrospun nanofiber materials which are applied to resolve these challenges are researched. This review presents the fundamental research and technological development of multifarious electrospun nanofiber materials for Li‐S cells, including their processing methods, structures, morphology engineering, and electrochemical performance. Not only does the review article contain a summary of electrospun nanofiber materials in Li‐S batteries but also a proposal for designing electrospun nanofiber materials for Li‐S cells. These systematic discussions and proposed directions can enlighten thoughts and offer ways in the reasonable design of electrospun nanofiber materials for excellent Li‐S batteries in the near future.</p>

Abstract:The search for new cathode and anode materials for Li-ion batteries has been an important way to satisfy the ever-growing demands for better performance with higher energy/power densities, safety, cycle stability and rate capability. The use of nanostructured electrode (both anode and cathode) materials for Li-ion batteries has been extensively studied and has presented the opportunity to enhance both ion transport and electron transport, and to promote liquid electrolyte diffusion into the bulk material by shortening the diffusion lengths of ions and increasing the conductivity within the whole electrode, thus improves the electrochemical performance of batteries. In this review, the use of advanced nanostructured electrode materials for rechargeable Li-ion batteries is reviewed, especially our recent researches, including various insertion-type, conversion-type and alloying-type electrode materials. The major goal of the current review is to highlight some recent progresses in using these nanostructured materials as cathode and anode materials to develop Li-ion batteries with high capacity, high rate capability, and excellent cycling stability.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is recognized as one of the promising candidates to break through the specific energy limitations of commercial lithium-ion batteries given the high theoretical specific energy, environmental friendliness, and low cost. Over the past decade, tremendous progress have been achieved in improving the electrochemical performance especially the lifespan by various strategies mainly concentrated on the sulfur cathodes. In this review, the fundamental electrochemistry of sulfur cathode and lithium anode is revealed to understand the current dilemmas. And the advances achieved through diverse strategies are comprehensively summarized, which involves lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) limitation, sulfur redox reaction regulation and electrocatalysis in sulfur cathode and artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI), electrolyte design, and structured anode in lithium anode. Additionally, the differences between laboratory level coin cells and actual pouch cells need to be addressed that only few reports on practical Li-S pouch cell are available due to the unexpected problems on both sulfur cathode and lithium anode which are masked at lithium and electrolyte excess. Lastly, the challenges and perspective toward the practical Li-S batteries are also offered.

Abstract:Elemental sulfur has been extensively investigated as a promising candidate of cathode material for next generation lithium secondary batteries. However, some troublesome issues, such as the low electric conductivity of sulfur(5×10-30S·cm-1) and the high solubility of lithium polysulfide intermediates in organic electrolytes, resulting in a low utilization of active material and a redox shuttling of dissolved polysulfide ions between the sulfur cathode and the lithium anode, which eventually leads to a deposition of insoluble and insulating Li2S2/Li2 S on the electrode surface and a fast reduction in the specific capacity. Notably, recent results indicate that carbon materials have been regarded as the ideal matrix for sulfur to improve the discharge capacity and cycling performance of lithium-sulfur batteries. In this review, recent development of carbon materials for lithium sulfur batteries is summarized and the prospect on sulfur/carbon composites cathode is discussed.

Abstract:Rechargeable batteries are a major element in the transition to renewable energie systems, but the current lithium-ion battery technology may face limitations in the future concerning the availability of raw materials and socio-economic insecurities. Sodium–sulfur (Na–S) batteries are a promising alternative energy storage device for small- to large-scale applications driven by more favorable environmental and economic perspectives. However, scientific and technological problems are still hindering a commercial breakthrough of these batteries. This review discusses strategies to remedy some of the current drawbacks such as the polysulfide shuttle effect, catastrophic volume expansion, Na dendrite growth, and slow reaction kinetics by nanostructuring both the sulfur cathode and the Na anode. Moreover, a survey of recent patents on room temperature (RT) Na–S batteries revealed that nanostructured sulfur and sodium electrodes are still in the minority, which suggests that much investigation and innovation is needed until RT Na–S batteries can be commercialized.

Abstract:Commercial lithium-ion batteries are gradually approaching their theoretical values (200-250 Wh kg-1), which cannot meet the fast-growing energy storage demands. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are anticipated to supersede lithium-ion batteries as the next-generation energy storage system owing to their high theoretical specific capacity (1675 mAh g-1) and energy density (2600 Wh kg-1). Nonetheless, Li-S batteries encounter several challenges, including the inadequate conductivity of sulfur and lithium sulfide, sulfur's volume expansion, and the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides, all of which significantly impact the practical utilization of Li-S batteries. Electrospun carbon-based nanofibers can simultaneously resolve these issues with their economical preparation, distinctive nanostructure, and exceptional flexibility. This review presents the most recent research findings on electrospun carbon-based nanofibers materials serving as sulfur hosts and interlayer components in Li-S batteries. We analyzed the impact of the material's structural design on the performance of Li-S batteries and the relative underlying mechanism. Finally, the current challenges and issues faced by carbon-based nanofibers composites in the application of Li-S batteries are summarized, and the future development trajectory are outlined.

Abstract:Rechargeable batteries are attractive power storage equipment for a broad diversity of applications. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are widely used the superior rechargeable battery in portable electronics. The increasing needs in portable electronic devices require improved Li-ion batteries with excellent results over many discharge-recharge cycles. One important approach to ensure the electrodes’ integrity is by increasing the storage capacity of cathode and anode materials. This could be achieved using nanoscale-sized electrode materials. In the article, we review the recent advances and perspectives of carbon nanomaterials as anode material for Lithium-ion battery applications. The first section of the review presents the general introduction, industrial use, and working principles of Li-ion batteries. It also demonstrates the advantages and disadvantages of nanomaterials and challenges to utilize nanomaterials for Li-ion battery applications. The second section of the review describes the utilization of various carbon-based nanomaterials as anode materials for Li-ion battery applications. The last section presents the conclusion and future directions.

Abstract:As a promising candidate for future batteries, the lithium-sulfur battery is gaining increasing interest due to its high capacity and energy density. However, over the years, lithium-sulfur batteries have been plagued by fading capacities and the low Coulombic efficiency derived from its unique electrochemical behavior, which involves solid-liquid transition reactions. Moreover, lithium-sulfur batteries employ metallic lithium as the anode, which engenders safety vulnerability of the battery. The electrodes play a pivotal role in the performance of lithium-sulfur batteries. A leap forward in progress of lithium-sulfur batteries is always accompanied by a revolution in the electrode technology. In this review, recent progress in rechargeable lithium-sulfur batteries is summarized in accordance with the evolution of the electrodes, including the diversified cathode design and burgeoning metallic-lithium-free anodes. Although the way toward application has still many challenges associated, recent progress in lithium-sulfur battery technology still paints an encouraging picture of a revolution in rechargeable batteries.
