Abstract:SiO, with a high theoretical specific capacity and acceptable volume variation, is considered one of the most promising next-generation anode materials. However, there is limited research on the effect of SiO particle size distribution on the electrochemical performance of LIBs. In this study, we investigated the impact of the ratio of submicron particles (0.1 mu m to 1 mu m) on the electrochemical performance. It found that a combination of micron and submicron particles with the ratio of submicron particles (RoS) in processed SiO at around 90 % resulted in optimal enhanced capacity and cycling stability, while the remaining 10 % of micron particles mitigate the side reactions caused by excessive surface area. This work is believed to provide a new perspective for inspiring longspan life SiO-based LIBs.

Abstract:Aluminum is considered a promising anode candidate for lithium-ion batteries due to its low cost, high capacity and low equilibrium potential for lithiation/delithiation. However, the compact surface oxide layer, insufficient lithium diffusion kinetics and non-negligible volume change of aluminum-based anode materials severely hamper their extended application. Thus, significant efforts have been dedicated in tackling these challenges towards practical applications. In this review, we initially focus on the electrochemical lithium storage mechanism and introduce our current understanding of the reported reactions accounting for the performance degradation. Then, thus far, we summarize the strategies applied for boosting the lithium storage performance of the aluminum-based anode materials including nanostructure construction, surface modification, alloy designation and electrolyte optimization. Finally, present challenges and future outlook on aluminum-based anode materials are depicted. We hope that this review delivers an overall picture of the recent progress on aluminum-based anode materials and inspires more research in the future.
Ultrathin Aluminum Nanosheets Grown on Carbon Nanotubes for High Performance Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Abstract Aluminum metal with high capacity has been regarded as a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries but suffers from pulverization and side reactions upon the lithiation and de‐lithiation process, which depend on the rational design and controllable synthesis of nanostructures. Here, it is proposed that ultrathin aluminum nanosheets (Al‐NS) grown on carbon nanotubes as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. Based on the preferential Al(111) crystal facet exposure and the rather limited thickness less than 5 nm, the batteries exhibit a high reversible capacity of 990 mAh g −1 at 1 C and an excellent rate capacity of 524.6 mAh g −1 at 24 C, and a long term stability with almost no capacity fading after 500 cycles at high C‐rates of 5, 10, and 20 C. Density functional theory based first principle calculation reveals that the high Young's modulus of Al(111) facet for fast Li + diffusion and composite materials design with carbon nanotubes enable high rate capability and mitigate huge volume change during discharge/charge process. The results prove that ultrathin Al nanosheets can be a low cost and high‐performance anode material for lithium ion batteries.

Unlocking the Lithium Storage Capacity of Aluminum by Molecular Immobilization and Purification

Abstract:Aluminum is regarded as a promising alternative for graphite anode in next-generation lithium-ion batteries, but its application is hindered by the simultaneous presence of aluminum oxide and the huge volume changes. Herein, hydrogenation-induced self-assembly of robust Al nanocrystals with high purity that are uniformly anchored on graphene is demonstrated. The strong molecular interaction between Al and graphene can not only thermodynamically facilitate the homogenous distribution of Al on graphene but also effectively alleviate the volume changes and preserve the structural integrity of the electrode. More importantly, density functional theory calculations reveal that the absence of oxidation can lower the energy barrier for Li diffusion inside the Al matrix to less than 1/6 of that in an Al matrix with only one monolayer coverage of oxygen. These unique structural features enable the aluminum/graphene nanosheets (Al@GNs) electrode to realize a high reversible capacity of 1219 mAh g-1 and an excellent cycling stability with capacity of 766 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at the 3 A g-1 rate. Furthermore, a full cell, comprising an Al@GNs anode and LiFePO4 cathode, exhibits remarkable capacity retention of 96.4% after 100 cycles at the 0.5 A g-1 rate.

Abstract:Aluminum is an attractive anode material for lithium ion batteries due to its low cost, high capacity and low equilibrium potential for lithiation/delithiation. The compact surface oxide layer is usually considered to be detrimental for lithium storage in Al due to its poor conductivity for Li+. Here we show that the Al oxide layer, which is positively charged, can be utilized to assist the homogeneous loading of the Al nanoparticles on to the negatively charged graphene oxide (GO) sheets. During the thermal reduction of GO to reduced GO (rGO), anhydrous HCl is introduced to selectively remove the surface oxide on the Al particles. The vitalized Al/rGO composite exhibits high lithium storage capacity of 1041mAhg−1 after 500 cycles at current density of 500mAg−1. The results demonstrate how the double edged surface oxide layer on Al nanoparticles can be manipulated to enable high performance lithium storage in Al, which is illuminating for the application of Al as a high performance, low cost anode material for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Micron sized alloys have been considered as the most attractive candidates for advanced lithium or sodium ion battery anodes due to their high capacity, cost effectiveness, and ease of mass production. However, their large volume variation during (de)alloying reaction with Li or Na ions causes severe mechanical degradation of anode materials, resulting in particle pulverization and loss of electrical interparticle contact. In addition, this substantial volumetric fluctuation leads to newly exposed anode surface to electrolyte and instability of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), which can bring about continuously formation of SEI layers. To mitigate the large volume change issues of micron sized alloys, various approaches have been studied such as introducing various electrolytes and additives for stabilizing the SEI layers. However, these modified SEI layers are still not enough to suppress the large volume fluctuation of micron sized alloys. Here, we demonstrate that the effect of interface between electrolyte and anode surface on anode pulverization. With micron sized alloying anodes for sodium-ion batteries (Bi and Sn), we observed substantially different pulverization behavior as a choice of electrolyte solvents leading to different anode-electrolyte interface. This different interface reactivity between solvents has a big impact on not only pulverization behavior of alloying anodes but also formation and growth of SEI layers on the surface of anode. Thus, the electrochemical performances of the alloying anodes also can be influenced by its interface characteristics. We thoroughly analyzed the effect of interface of alloying anode from electrode-level to nanoscale by various characterization tools such as Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Atom probe tomography (APT), and cryo-transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, we clarified the mechanism of the interface reaction and pulverization pathway by theoretical simulations. We believe this study can help researchers to understand the degradation behavior of large volume change alloy anodes.
Diffusional lithium trapping as a failure mechanism of aluminum foil anodes in lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Aluminum foils are an appealing anode for lithium-ion batteries due to high capacity and low-cost, but their viability has been limited due to poor cyclability arising from pulverization and solid-electrolyte interphase growth. Here, we show that significant capacity degradation of aluminum foil anodes during electrochemical cycling also occurs due to diffusional lithium trapping. Scanning electron microscopy of cross-sectioned, cycled foils in the delithiated state reveals large regions of β-LiAl that are passivated by a surface layer of ⍺-Al, which has poor Li+ diffusivity. It is found that lithium diffusion occurs preferentially along the β-LiAl grain boundaries, so the grain structure after initial lithiation significantly affects the trapping behavior. Diffusional lithium trapping is exacerbated by both higher delithiation rates and higher areal capacity, presenting a challenge towards commercialization of aluminum foil anodes. We further demonstrate that diffusional trapping in aluminum foil anodes can be mitigated through alloy design, with the addition of 2–3 wt% Li yielding improved first cycle efficiency, and the addition of 1 wt% Si yielding improved cycle life. These results provide a mechanistic understanding of diffusional lithium trapping in aluminum foil anodes and highlight compositional design of alloys as a promising strategy to overcome it.

Abstract:Aluminum has excellent intrinsic properties as an anode material for lithium ion batteries, while this application is significantly underappreciated. Due to the high chemical reactivity of Al, bottom-up preparation of Al nanostructures is very challenging and Al based anode with high capacity and good stability is extremely challenging. In this work, we developed a plasma method to address the synthetic challenge. Using AlCl3-H2-CH4 plasma with the addition of low amount of FeCl3, a homogeneous Al-Fe/C nanocomposite with uniform particle size around 40 nm is obtained at near room temperature. The low pressure glow discharge plasma generates highly reactive intermediates such as AlCl and H radicals, which allows direct reduction of AlCl3 to metal Al in mild conditions. The plasma enabled reaction leads to performance breakthrough of the Al based anode materials, which suggests that Al should be more seriously considered as a promising candidate anode material for LIBs.

Abstract:Nanometer copper–tin alloy anode materials with amorphous structure were prepared by a reverse microemulsion technique for lithium-ion batteries. It was found that the electrochemical performance of alloy was influenced by its particle size, which was controlled by appropriate surfactant content. The nanometer copper–tin alloy with particle size of 50–60nm presented the best performance, showing a reversible specific capacity of 300mAh/g over the full voltage range 0.0–1.2V and capacity retention of 93.3% at 50 cycles. A great irreversible capacity was caused by the formation of a SEI layer on the surface of nanometer alloy. The contact resistance between nanometer particles resulted in the poor electric conductivity and the match of particle size and conductive agent content had a great impact on the electrochemical performance of the nanometer copper–tin alloy anode.

Space Limited Growth Strategy for Ultra-high Areal Capacity Rechargeable Aluminum Batteries

Abstract:Increasing the areal loading of the electrodes is the premise to improve the energy density of devices and promote the commercialization of aluminum batteries. However, large areal loading will inevitably increase the amount of aluminum deposition per unit area and aggravate dendritic growth, which seriously affect the safety and stability of devices. In this work, a novel aluminum battery anode is reported, which not only increase the effective active area of the electrode, but also form a stable electrode/electrolyte interface to induce electrodeposition uniformly of aluminum. These traits result from the four advantages of P-Al 2 O 3 /Al electrode: (1) Homogenizing current density distribution; (2) Redistributing ion concentration gradient; (3) Limiting Al growth in micropores; (4) Large specific surface area provides adequate electrolyte contact. Such an anode retains circulate stably for more than 1400 h at the large area specific capacity of 5 mAh·cm −2 . The protected anode shows also excellent cell stability over 2900 cycles when paired with high current density (10 mA·cm −2 ). In addition, a 480 mAh pouch cell with P-Al 2 O 3 /Al anode can remain the energy density of 170 Wh·kg −1 and the energy efficiency of 90% (calculated based on the positive active component) under the voltage of 0.5 V to 2.5 V, which means that the amplification of the battery will not reduce the performance of the Al battery. The strategy and method have important practical significance for assembling aluminum batteries with high energy density and high cycle stability.

Abstract:As alloying-type anode materials, metallic aluminum owns an ultra-high specific capacity (993 mAh g(Al)(-1) to LiAl) for Li storage, which is low-cost and a promising candidate for next-generation rechargeable batteries with high energy densities. However, metallic Al anodes suffer from irreversible lithiation of naturally occurring alumina layer during cycles, resulting in rapid capacity decay of Al anode-based batteries. Herein, Li supplement nucleated on Al foil via a controllably electrochemical pre-lithiation technology is employed for achieving high-performance elemental foil anodes. In full batteries, the pre-lithiated areas continuously supply Li outward during dealloying process to compensate for irreversible lithium loss during alloying process that preferentially alloys the unreacted Al2O3 surface layer along the rolling direction of Al foil until the entire surface is covered by LixAlOy. This lithiation behavior can avoid the severe stress concentration during alloying to prevent the perforation and pulverization of foil, making commercial Al foil succeed as single-material anodes. The produced commercial Al foil anode-based Li-ion batteries employing various commercial cathodes demonstrate promising electrochemical performances. For example, the Al||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 battery offers a high specific capacity of 180 mAh g(-1), an excellent capacity retention of similar to 90% after 400 cycles, and relatively stable solid electrolyte interface without any dendrite.

Abstract:A Li spreading layer consisting of metallic Ni particles is revealed as an efficient artificial structure to boost the performance of Al anode in all‐solid‐state battery. Developing promising substitutes of lithium (Li) metal anode that suffers from a serious interfacial instability against the solid electrolyte (SE) is a formidable challenge for the all‐solid‐state battery. Aluminum (Al), a highly potential candidate owing to its high specific capacity and relatively low working potential, however, cannot withstand stable cycling in all‐solid‐state battery due to the fast structural collapse caused by the solid/solid contact at the Al/SE interface. Herein, a Li spreading layer consisting of metallic nickel (Ni) particles at the Al surface is proposed to raise the performance of Al anode in all‐solid‐state battery. Owing to the immiscibility between Ni and Li solid phases, this Li spreading layer can enable a uniform distribution of Li atoms over the electrode surface followed by a stable Li–Al alloying/dealloying processes, suppressing the stress deformation at the Al/SE interface and significantly improving the cycling performance of Al anode in all‐solid‐state battery. The modified Al anode not only outperforms the bare Al significantly, but also exhibits superior cyclability and rate ability compared with the Li anode. This work provides an efficient strategy to promote the application of Al anode in all‐solid‐state battery, and is expected to be generalized for other alloy anodes.
Interconnected Hollow Carbon Nanospheres for Stable Lithium Metal Anodes.

Abstract:For future applications in portable electronics, electric vehicles and grid storage, batteries with higher energy storage density than existing lithium ion batteries need to be developed. Recent efforts in this direction have focused on high-capacity electrode materials such as lithium metal, silicon and tin as anodes, and sulphur and oxygen as cathodes. Lithium metal would be the optimal choice as an anode material, because it has the highest specific capacity (3,860 mAh g –1 ) and the lowest anode potential of all. However, the lithium anode forms dendritic and mossy metal deposits, leading to serious safety concerns and low Coulombic efficiency during charge/discharge cycles. Although advanced characterization techniques have helped shed light on the lithium growth process, effective strategies to improve lithium metal anode cycling remain elusive. Here, we show that coating the lithium metal anode with a monolayer of interconnected amorphous hollow carbon nanospheres helps isolate the lithium metal depositions and facilitates the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase. We show that lithium dendrites do not form up to a practical current density of 1 mA cm –2 . The Coulombic efficiency improves to ∼99% for more than 150 cycles. This is significantly better than the bare unmodified samples, which usually show rapid Coulombic efficiency decay in fewer than 100 cycles. Our results indicate that nanoscale interfacial engineering could be a promising strategy to tackle the intrinsic problems of lithium metal anodes.

Abstract:Li metal is a promising anode material for next-generation Li-metal battery systems due to its ultra high theoretical capacity (3860 mAh g-1) and low electrochemical potential (-3.04 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). However, the instability of Li metal towards liquids electrolytes, unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation, and dendritic lithium have caused significant safety concerns that have inhibited its commercialization [1]. It is believed that artificial SEI layers formed through various techniques can stabilize the Li metal interface and enable stable electrochemical cycling with higher Coulombic efficiency. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) and molecular layer deposition (MLD) are nanoscale coating techniques that are capable of controlling the interfacial chemistry down to the atomic level [2]. Herein, we demonstrate the effectiveness of these techniques in enabling high performance Li metal anodes for next-generation battery systems. Various polymeric protective coatings are synthesized on Li metal by MLD to enable prolonged lifetime and cycling stability. Metalcones including Alucone and Zircone are explored and shown to greatly enhance the performance of Li-S and Li-O2 systems [3]. Moreover, the ability to fine tune the composition of artificial SEI layers is exemplified by combining ALD/MLD techniques to form hybrid organic/inorganic protection layers to further improve the stability of the Li metal anode. The performance of the protected Li metal anodes are optimized in various electrolyte systems to achieve long life times at relatively high current densities in symmetrical cells and full cells. Furthermore, a better understanding of the role of these organic/inorganic polymeric films are gained through advanced ex-situ and in-situ characterization techniques, providing insight into the mechanism of improved performance. These works display the advantages of ALD/MLD for precise interfacial engineering at the atomic/molecular level towards achieving high performance next-generation batteries. Surface Evolution of Aluminum Electrodes in Non-Aqueous Aluminum Batteries

Abstract:Aluminum batteries are considered as novel devices for safe energy storage. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the operation mechanism and evolution behaviors inside the cells of the current aluminum batteries, which limits the rational design and fabrication of high-performance aluminum batteries. To address the issue, systematical studies were applied to understand the surface evolution of the aluminum electrode in the aluminum batteries. Using in situ optical observation and simulation methods, the results suggest that dendrite growth and deposition on the aluminum electrode surface is critical to the aluminum deposition/corrosion evolution during following cycles, which leads to uneven current distribution on the electrode and inhomogeneous ion concentration interface. Additionally, the activity of the aluminum dendrites suggests that the nanosized aggregation would present less activity than the pristine aluminum, which in turn impacts the uniform evolution of the electrode surface. The aluminum-graphite full cells also exhibit a similar trend that is found in the in situ symmetric cells. The combined results from in situ optical observation, simulation, and full cell evaluation provide a deep insight into the aluminum batteries, which would be meaningful to guide research on their life cycle and evolution.

First Principles Study of Aluminum Doped Polycrystalline Silicon as a Potential Anode Candidate in Li‐ion Batteries

Abstract:Grain boundary sliding, a key mechanism involved in preventing mechanical failure is facilitated by the presence of trace aluminum at grain boundaries in silicon electrodes for Li‐ion batteries. Addressing sustainable energy storage remains crucial for transitioning to renewable sources. While Li‐ion batteries have made significant contributions, enhancing their capacity through alternative materials remains a key challenge. Micro‐sized silicon is a promising anode material due to its tenfold higher theoretical capacity compared to conventional graphite. However, its substantial volumetric expansion during cycling impedes practical application due to mechanical failure and rapid capacity fading. A novel approach is proposed to mitigate this issue by incorporating trace amounts of aluminum into the micro‐sized silicon electrode using ball milling. Density functional theory (DFT) is employed to establish a theoretical framework elucidating how grain boundary sliding, a key mechanism involved in preventing mechanical failure is facilitated by the presence of trace aluminum at grain boundaries. This, in turn, reduces stress accumulation within the material, reducing the likelihood of failure. To validate the theoretical predictions, capacity retention experiments are conducted on undoped and Al‐doped micro‐sized silicon samples. The results demonstrate significantly reduced capacity fading in the doped sample, corroborating the theoretical framework and showcasing the potential of aluminum doping for improved Li‐ion battery performance.

Abstract:Li metal is a potential anode for lithium batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity (3860 mA h g−1); however, its practical use is handicapped by the formation of dendrites. Herein, we propose an Al−Li alloy as a stable and reversible anode achieved via pre-lithiation of Al foil. The Al−Li alloy has a chemical composition of LiAl, giving a theoretical capacity of 993 mA h g−1, which is 2.67 times higher than that of graphite. Because of the pre-lithiation effect and the preserved mosaic-like morphology, the polarization associated with Li plating on an Al−Li alloy electrode is much smaller than that observed on a pristine Al foil electrode, and is just 1/10 as that recorded on a Li foil electrode. As a result, with fast kinetics, the Al−Li alloy electrode shows superiorly high reversibility. Importantly, the usability of Al−Li alloy as anodes is confirmed using sulfur and LiFePO4 as cathodes in full cells.

Abstract:Sulfide-based solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) matched with alloy anodes are considered as promising candidates for application in all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) to overcome the bottlenecks of the lithium (Li) anode. However, an understanding of the dynamic electrochemical processes on alloy anode in SSE is still elusive. Herein, in situ atomic force microscopy gives insights into the block-formation and stack-accumulation behaviors of Li precipitation on an Li electrode, uncovering the morphological evolution of nanoscale Li deposition/dissolution in ASSBs. Furthermore, two-dimensional Li–indium (In) alloy lamellae and the homogeneous solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) shell on the In electrode reveal the precipitation mechanism microscopically regulated by the alloy anode. The flexible and wrinkle-structure SEI shell further enables the electrode protection and inner Li accommodation upon cycles, elucidating the functional influences of SEI shell on the cycling behaviors. Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) have recently attracted extensive interest in the energy-storage field after silence from the public view for several decades. However, many challenges still need to be overcome before their practical application, especially those that are related to the interfacial instability of Li metal anodes. Here, we reveal for the first time that the thickness of the degradation layer on the metallic Li anode surface shows a linear relationship with Li areal capacity utilization up to 4.0 mAh cm−2 in a practical LMB system. The increase in Li capacity utilization in each cycle causes variations in the morphology and composition of the degradation layer on the Li anode. Under high Li capacity utilization, the current density for charge (i.e., Li deposition) is identified to be a key factor controlling the corrosion of the Li metal anode. These fundamental findings provide new perspectives for the development of rechargeable LMBs.
