Abstract:Direct electrochemical detection in real food samples remains challenging due to the fouling and interference by abundant interference components. Herein, we report an electrochemical sensing platform based on binary assembly of silica nanochannels and polydimethylsiloxane that is able to detect Pb2+ and Cd2+ in real food samples without complex pretreatments. Using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, the electrochemical detection consists of electro-deposition of metal species and subsequent anodic stripping in the modified silica-nanochannels. Under the optimized conditions, the linear ranges were obtained from 4 to 1500 mu g L-1 for Pb2+ and 30 to 900 mu g L-1 for Cd2+. The relative standard deviations were 2.9% and 3.6% for Pb2+ and Cd2+ of 300 mu g L-1. Without tedious pretreatments, the quantitative detection of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in real juice and beverage samples was successfully performed, revealing that the developed sensor possesses excellent anti-interference and practicability properties for unprocessed food.
Determination of Cd and Pb in food slurries by GFAAS using cryogenic grinding for sample preparation

Abstract:A simple method combining slurry sampling after cryogenic grinding and the use of a permanent modification of the integrated platform inside the transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA) was proposed for the determination of Cd and Pb in foods. Potentialities of the cryogenic grinding were evaluated for grinding different materials of difficult homogenization such as high fat and high fiber tissues. Animal and vegetal samples were cut into small pieces and ground in liquid nitrogen for 2 min. Slurries were prepared directly in the autosampler cup after cryogenic grinding by transferring an exact amount of homogeneous powdered material (5-20 mg) to the cup, followed by 1.00 mL of 0.2% (v/v) HNO3 containing 0.04% (v/v) Triton X-100 and sonication for 30 s, before transferring into the platform previously coated with 250 microg W and 200 microg Rh. Use of a tungsten carbide-rhodium permanent modifier combined with NH4H2PO4 conventional modifier improves tube lifetime and increases the pyrolysis temperature for Cd. Homogeneity tests, carried out by comparing the between- and within-batch precision for each kind of sample, showed no significant differences at the 95% confidence level, indicating good homogeneity for 5-20 mg masses. Detection limits were 3.3 ng g(-1) Cd and 75 ng g(-1) Pb for 1% m/v slurries. Results for determination of Cd and Pb in foods slurries were in agreement with those obtained with digested samples, since no statistical differences were found by the paired t-test at the 95% level.

Abstract:A sequential and direct solid sampling (SS) method to determine cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) in milk powders and infant formulas was developed using a high-resolution continuum source graphite furnace atomic absorption (HR-CS GFAA) spectrometer. The analysis was performed using a unique sample aliquot and in one measurement run. Absorbance measurements were carried out at the main analytical lines for Cd (228.802 nm) and Cu (324.754 nm). Experimental conditions were optimized using aqueous standards and a skimmed milk powder certified reference material (ERM®–BD150). Palladium was added as chemical modifier in standards and samples. For Cd determination, a pyrolysis temperature of 900 °C and an atomization temperature of 1400 °C were used. Afterwards, the wavelength was automatically changed, and Cu was determined from the same aliquot of sample using an atomization temperature of 2200 °C. Calibration was performed using aqueous standards. Using three pixels (CP ± 1) for the quantification of both elements and a sample mass of 0.9 mg, the limits of quantification (LOQs) and the upper limits of the linear range (ULLRs) were 2.1 µg kg−1 and 56 µg kg−1 for Cd (1.9 to 50 pg), and 0.021 mg kg−1 and 1.7 mg kg−1 for Cu (0.019 to 1.5 ng), respectively. The linear response of Cu was expanded up to 4.7 mg kg−1 (4.2 ng) by using the approach of measuring at the wings of the absorption line. The developed methodology was applied to analyse different commercial milk powder and infant formula samples with successful results.

Abstract:This paper describes a new experimental configuration of extraction induced by emulsion breaking method to extract and determine Ni and Co in chocolate bars by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. At optimized conditions, the sample (0.08 g) was mixed with 4 mL of extractant solution (4% m/v Triton X-100 and 10% v/v HNO3) in a plastic syringe to form a solid-oil-water emulsion. Then, emulsion breaking was assisted by membrane filtration. The total extraction procedure took approximately 1 min, in opposition to 25 (centrifugation) and 50 min (heating). Extraction yields ranged from 94.8 to 114.3% for Co and from 85.9 to 108.4% for Ni. The limits of detection and quantification were, respectively, 24.73 and 82.45 μg Kg-1 for Co and 49.05 and 163.5 μg Kg-1 for Ni. Recoveries ranged from 92.1 (Ni) to 105.4% (Co).
Simultaneous direct determination of aluminum, calcium and iron in silicon carbide and silicon nitride powders by slurry-sampling graphite furnace AAS

Abstract:A fast and accurate analytical method was established for the simultaneous direct determination of aluminum, calcium and iron in silicon carbide and silicon nitride powders by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry using a slurry sampling technique and a Hitachi Model Z-9000 atomic absorption spectrometer. The slurry samples were prepared by the ultrasonication of silicon carbide or silicon nitride powders with 0.1 M nitric acid. Calibration curves were prepared by using a mixed standard solution containing aluminum, calcium, iron and 0.1 M nitric acid. The analytical results of the proposed method for aluminum, calcium and iron in silicon carbide and silicon nitride reference materials were in good agreement with the reference values. The detection limits for aluminum, calcium and iron were 0.6 microg/g, 0.15 microg/g and 2.5 microg/g, respectively, in solid samples, when 200 mg of powdered samples were suspended in 20 ml of 0.1 M nitric acid and a 10 microl portion of the slurry sample was then measured. The relative standard deviation of the determination of aluminum, calcium and iron was 5 - 33%.

Abstract:A rapid and novel two-step dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and dispersive micro-solid phase extraction method was established for the separation and enrichment of trace cadmium, nickel, and copper in food and environmental water prior to determination by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In the first microextraction step, carbon tetrachloride was employed to extract metal-diethyldithiocarbamate chelates from aqueous solution with ultrasound. In the following step, Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were added and used to collect the analytes in the organic solvent. The sample pH, type and volume of extraction solvent, mass of magnetic nanoparticles, concentration of the chelating agent, concentration of sodium chloride, and sonication time were optimized. The linear dynamic range was from 0.01 to 20 micrograms per liter with correlation coefficients between 0.9990 and 0.9992. Enrichment factors were 78, 79, and 81 for cadmium, nickel, and copper, respectively. The limits of detection for cadmium, nickel, and copper were 0.007, 0.009, and 0.017 micrograms per liter, with relative standard deviations from 1.1 to 2.6 percent. The developed method was validated by the determination of cadmium, nickel, and copper in rice and mussel certified reference materials, food, and environmental water with satisfactory results.

Abstract:Toxicity, mobility, bioavailability and biofunctions of chromium, cadmium, mercury and lead are heavily dependent upon their specific chemical forms, leading to a high demand to metal speciation analysis rather than total quantification. Simultaneous speciation analysis of multiple metal(loid)s is attractive to a large sample capacity containing unstable analytes due to its economic and environmental advantages over the conventional single elemental strategies. In this work, an analytical method integrating online solid phase extraction into high performance liquid chromatography interfaced with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to simultaneously preconcentrate and quantify Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb forms in pg L-1 levels in water was developed. Cr (III + VI), Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II), methylmercury (MeHg), ethylmercury (EtHg), and trimethyl (TML) and triethyl lead (TEL) were captured by the C18 adsorbent (equilibrated with 10 mL of 1.0 mM 2-hydroxyethanethiol at 10 mL min-1) and eluted by mobile phase (5.0 mM Cys at pH 2.0), then completely separated on the C18 column within 8.0 min and eventually determined by ICP-MS. Low limits of detection (0.001-0.007 ng L-1) and quantification (0.003-0.023 ng L-1), good relative standard deviations (<4%) and high enrichment factors (827-2656 folds) were obtained with good linearities. Three reference materials of total cadmium (GBW08602), total mercury (GBW08603) and total lead (GBW08601) in water were analyzed by the developed method to validate the accuracy with good agreement with certified values and satisfactory recoveries (92-100%). This method was proved feasible by the determination of Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb compounds in drinking water, river water, pond water and tap water.

Abstract:Isotope dilution liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was applied to the quantification of acrylamide in chocolate matrixes ( dark chocolate, milk chocolate, chocolate with nuts, chocolate with almonds, and chocolate with wheat best element). The method included defatting with petroleum ether, extracting with aqueous solution of 2 mol l(-1) sodium chloride and clean-up by solid-phase (SPE) with OASIS HLB 6 cm(3) cartridges. Acrylamide was detected with an Atlantis dC(18) 5 mu m 210 x 1.5 mm column using 10% methanol/0.1% formic acid in water as the mobile phase. The analytical method was in-house validated and good results were obtained with respect to repeatability (RSD < 3.5%) and recovery (86-93%), which fulfilled the requirements defined by European Union legislation. The acrylamide levels in chocolate were 23-537 mu g kg(-1). Therefore, the method was successfully used for the quantitative analysis of acrlyamide in various chocolate products.

Abstract:This study proposes a matrix separation procedure based on micellar-mediated extraction (cloud point extraction - CPE) for determining As, Cd, Pb, and Se (potential contaminants) in nickel alloy and steel samples. Structural characterization and qualitative analysis of Ni alloy were conducted on the nickel alloy using scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). After sample decomposition, ammonium o,o-diethyl dithiophosphate (DDTP) was used to complex the analytes and Triton X-114 as a non-ionic surfactant in CPE for matrix separation and extraction. Methanol acidified with 0.1 mol L-1 HNO3 was added to the surfactant-rich phase before the analytes determination by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF AAS). Parameters such as pH, complexing agent and surfactant concentrations, acid medium, complexation time, and type of diluent were evaluated. The obtained results indicated that the ratio DDTP:As was 3:1, DDTP:Cd and DDTP:Pb was 2:1, and DDTP:Se was 1:1. The enrichment factors were 6, 8, 14, and 13, and limits of detection were 1.5, 0.06, 0.31 and 0.27 μg g-1 for As, Cd, Pb, and Se, respectively. The method was applied for As, Cd, Pb, and Se determination in Inconel 625 nickel alloy and standard reference materials (AISI 4340 Steel - SRM® 361, AISI 94B17 Steel - SRM® 362, Chromium-Vanadium Steel - SRM® 363, and Nickel Alloy UNS - SRM® 864). Analyte recoveries lay above 88%, and relative standard deviations were lower than 5%. Application of cloud point extraction for matrix separation allowed the determination of low concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, and Se, constituting an environmentally friendly method.
Application of electrocolorimetric extraction for the determination of Ni(II) ions in chocolate samples: A green methodology for food analysis

Abstract:This study developed an electrocolorimetric extraction technique as a simple, rapid, and green method for the simultaneous preconcentration and determination of Ni(II) in chocolate samples. The system was designed using an agarose gel (3% w/v) solution containing 10% v/v 80 mM dimethylglyoxime (DMG) and 10% v/v 0.03 M ammonia as colorimetric reagents to determine Ni(II) ions. When voltage was applied to the system, Ni(II) ions were extracted from the donor solution into the gel and formed Ni-DMG complexes with a pink color. Under the optimal conditions, a good linear range was obtained from 30 to 750 µg L-1 (R2 > 0.998) with a detection limit of 1 µg L-1. Inter- and intra-assay results showing relative standard deviations were less than 2.6% and 1.9%, respectively. Our developed method was applied to determine Ni(II) in chocolate samples. The results were in agreement with those obtained using ICP-OES.

Abstract:The simultaneous multielement determination of Pb, Sn, Ni and Cu in aluminium alloys by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) was performed by a quick method using slurry sampling. The metallic colloidal slurries were obtained by an electrical discharge operated in liquid medium. In this work, the effects of aluminium were evaluated and the results show that it causes a strong retention of Pb, Ni and Cu at low pyrolysis temperatures which is overcome by employing high pyrolysis temperatures. Aluminium also significantly improves the thermal stabilisation of Pb and Sn, it being possible to reach pyrolysis temperatures of 1100 and 1300 degrees C, respectively. Such stabilisation indicates that the performance of aluminium as a matrix modifier for Pb is better than that obtained using phosphate and magnesium nitrate without substantial changes of the figures of merit. The effects of aluminium on the atomisation characteristics of the elements and those coming from the simultaneous multielement determination on the figures of merit of the elements are also discussed. In this work, a calibration procedure involving a matrix matching method with aqueous aluminium standards is proposed as a simple and efficient way to solve the inconveniences originated by the aluminium matrix. The proposed method was applied to the simultaneous multielement determination of several aluminium-base alloy standards giving results well within the recommended values.
Direct determination of Cd, Cu and Pb in wines and grape juices by thermospray flame furnace atomic absorption spectrometry

Abstract:The applicability of thermospray flame furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (TS-FF-AAS) was evaluated for direct determination of Cu, Cd and Pb in wines and grape juices. The developed procedure does not require preliminary acid digestion of the samples. The optimum conditions for determination of Cu, Cd and Pb in wines were studied and the performance was compared to those typically obtained by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). A sample volume of 150 microL was introduced into a heated nickel tube at a flow rate of 0.54 mLmin(-1) and 0.14 molL(-1) HNO(3) was used as sample carrier flowing at 2.5 mLmin(-1) for determining all analytes. The effect of ethanol concentrations on Cu, Cd and Pb absorbance signals were studied. All determinations were carried out by adopting optimized conditions and quantification was based on the standard additions method. Limits of detection (LOD) of 12.9, 1.8 and 5.3 microgL(-1) (n=14) for Cu, Cd and Pb, respectively, were obtained for wine samples (3sigma(blank)/slope, n=14). Relative standard deviations (R.S.D., %) of 2.7, 2.1 and 2.6 for Cu, Cd and Pb, were obtained (n=6) for wine samples. The values determined for grape juice samples were similar to these ones. The analytical throughput was 45 determinations h(-1) and accuracy was checked by addition-recovery experiments.
Fast Detection of Cadmium in Chocolate by Solid Sampling Electrothermal Vaporization Atomic Absorption Spectrometry and Its Application on Dietary Exposure Risk Assessment

Abstract:In this work, a rapid detection method using solid sampling electrothermal vaporization atomic absorption spectrometry (SS-ETV-AAS) was established for cadmium in chocolate. The instrumental system includes a solid sampling ETV unit, a catalytic pyrolysis furnace, an AAS detector, and a gas supply system with only an air pump and a hydrogen generator. Herein, MgO material with 1.0–1.5 mm particle size was first employed to replace the kaolin filler previously used to further shorten the peak width and to thereby improve the sensitivity. With 350 mL/min of air, a chocolate sample was heated for 25 s from 435 to 464 °C to remove water and organic matrices; then, after supplying 240 mL/min hydrogen and turning down air to 120 mL/min, a N2/H2 mixture gas was formed to accelerate Cd vaporization from chocolate residue under 465 to 765 °C. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limit (LOD) was obviously lowered to 70 pg/g (vs. previous 150 pg/g) with R2 > 0.999; the relative standard deviations (RSD) of repeated measurements for real chocolate samples ranged from 1.5% to 6.4%, indicating a favorable precision; and the Cd recoveries were in the range of 93–107%, proving a satisfied accuracy. Thus, the total analysis time is less than 3 min without the sample digestion process. Thereafter, 78 chocolate samples with different brands from 9 producing countries in China market were collected and measured by this proposed method. Based on the measured Cd concentrations, a dietary exposure assessment was performed for Chinese residents, and the target hazard quotient (THQ) values are all less than 1, proving no significant health risk from intaking chocolate cadmium for Chinese residents.

Abstract:A simple, rapid, sensitive, accurate, and automatic graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) method for detecting Cd and Pb in cereals is presented. This method enables the simultaneous determination of Cd and Pb in cereals with a pre-treatment method of diluted acid extraction and a high-performance lead–cadmium composite hollow-cathode lamp (LCC-HCL), and it realizes automatic determination from sample weighing to result output through an automatic diluted acid extraction system. Under the optimization, Pb and Cd in cereals were simultaneously and automatically detected in up to 240 measurements in 8 h. The LOD and LOQ of this method were 0.012 and 0.040 mg·kg−1 for Pb, and 0.0014 and 0.0047 mg·kg−1 for Cd, respectively. The results of the four certified reference materials were satisfied; there was no significant difference compared with the ICP-MS method according to a t-test, and the RSDs were less than 5% for Cd and Pb. The recoveries of naturally contaminated samples compared with the ICP-MS method were favorable, with 80–110% in eight laboratories. The developed method is rapid, low-cost, and highly automated and may be a good choice for grain quality discrimination and rapid analysis of Cd and Pb in different institutions.

Determination of Nickel after Online Sorbent Preconcentration by FI-FAAS Using Dimethylglyoxime as a Complexing Agent

Abstract:Dimethylglyoxime (DMG) has been tested as a complexing agent for the determination of nickel after online preconcentration on RP-C-18 in a microcolumn using flow injection coupled with a flame atomic absorption spectrometry system (FI-FAAS). The Ni-DMG complexes formed online can be adsorbed on the C-18 sorbent. Various parameters affecting the online Ni-DMG complex formation and its subsequent adsorption in the microcolumn as well as its elution into the nebulizer of the FAAS were optimized. A 10(-3) mol/L solution of DMG in 4% ethanol was mixed online with an aqueous sample solution acidified to 0.1% (v/v) nitric acid and Rowed for 30 a through the microcolumn. The adsorbed Ni-DMG complex in the microcolumn was eluted with ethanol containing 1% HNO3 into the nebulizer of the FAAS in 10 s. A good precision (RSD = 1.7%, n = 14), high enrichment factor (2I), and high sample throughput (90 h(-1)) with detection limit (3 sigma) 3 mu g/L were obtained. The method was applied to standard reference materials, i.e., NBS-362, NBS-364 (special low-alloy steel), and mussel (GBW 08571), for the determination of nickel and the results were in good agreement with certified values. Nickel recovery from seawater and high-purity magnesium oxide in the range 98-100% can be obtained by this method, (C) 1999 Academic Press.
Functionalized nanodiamonds with NiCoFe layered double hydroxides used as a novel adsorbent in dispersive solid phase microextraction for Pb(II) determination in juice samples

Abstract:A new solid phase microextraction (SPME) method utilizing nanodiamonds@NiCoFe-LDH for the pretreatment and extraction of Pb(II) before sample determination through FAAS was developed. NiCoFe-LDH was synthesized by using a hydrothermal synthesis technique and then combined with functionalized nanodiamonds. For the characterization of nanodiamonds@NiCoFe-LDH composite, FT-IR, FE-SEM, and XRD were utilized. The analytical parameters (pH level, amount of sorbent, concentration of eluent, volumes of sample and eluent, desorption time), i.e., pH = 8.0, 5.0 mg, 0.5 mol/L, 50 mL, 1.5 mL, and 0.5 min, respectively, were studied to set the maximum efficiency of the developed method. Additionally, matrix effects were taken into consideration during the evaluation process using the standard addition method. The limit of detection (LOD) and the preconcentration factor (PF) were obtained as 0.62 ng mL -1 and 25, respectively. To confirm the accuracy of the newly developed method, certified reference materials (CRMs) (NIST SRM 1515 apple leaves and BCR-505 estuarine water) were employed. %RSD was calculated as 2.0–8.0. The optimized method was successfully implemented to quantify Pb(II) in commercially available fruit juices of various brands and flavors procured from local markets in Kayseri, Turkey. Compared to previously reported methods, the developed method demonstrated exceptional sensitivity, achieving a remarkably low LOD.

Determination of cadmium in whole blood and urine electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry using palladium-based modifiers and in situ decontamination

Abstract:The determination of Cd in whole blood and urine by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry using Pd-based modifiers and in situ decontamination was studied. The performance of Pd, Pd + NH4NO3, and Pd + Mg(NO3)2 as modifiers were compared with respect to maximum pyrolysis and atomization temperatures, background attenuation, linear calibration range and matrix interference. Samples were diluted (1 + 4) with 0.1% Triton X-100 (blood) or 0.2% HNO3 (urine), and introduced onto the graphite tube platform already containing the in situ dried and decontaminated modifier. The influence of modifier volume and concentration, as well as that of the dilution ratio was investigated. The proposed procedure involves the use of Pd(NO3)2 + (Mg(NO3)2 as modifier, a pyrolysis temperature of 700 degree C and an in situ decontamination step of 1200 degrees C. The atomization temperature was 1700 degrees C. The detection limit (n = 10, k = 3) was 0.22 micrograms l-1 for both samples. Typical relative standard deviation values (n = 3) were below 3%. Using matrix-matched standards, good agreement was observed between experimental and reference values in the analysis of certified reference materials. Interlaboratory comparison data have confirmed the validity of the proposed analytical procedure.

Abstract:The commercial ultrasonic nebulizer NOVA-DUO (Optolab, Warsaw, Poland) has been evaluated for the simultaneous determination of transition (Au, Ag, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) and noble (Pd, Pt, Rh) volatile metal species by microwave induced plasma–optical emission spectrometry (MIP-OES). Simultaneous mixing and nebulization of the two solutions (acidified sample and reductant) on the piezoelectric transducer, with the possibility of flow rate adjustment, permits a wide variation of sensitivity. The vapor-phase species were rapidly transported via a stream of Ar carrier to an MIP–OES for simultaneous multi-element determination. A univariate approach and simplex optimization procedure was used to achieve optimized conditions and derive analytical figures of merit. Analytical performance of the ultrasonic nebulization system was characterized by determination of the limits of detection (LODs) and precision (RSDs) with the ultrasonic nebulizer/dual capillary system (USN/DCS) observed at 15 µL min−1 flow rate. An improvement in detection limits was achieved compared with pneumatic nebulization. Detection limits are superior to conventional pneumatic nebulization of elements. The experimental concentration detection limits for simultaneous determination, calculated as the concentration giving a signal equal to three times of standard deviation of the blank (LOD, 3σblank criterion, peak height), were 2.49, 1.75, 3.39, 2.13, 4.80, 6.21, 4.26, 2.01, 7.65, 3.92, and 4.65 ng mL−1 for Au, Ag, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Pd, Pt, Rh, and Zn, respectively. The method offers relatively good precision (RSD ranged from 8 to 12%) for liquid analysis and microsampling capability. The accuracy of the method was verified by the use of digested certified reference materials (NRCC TORT-1, NIES CRM-13, NIST SRM 2710, INCT SBF-4) and by aqueous standard calibration technique. The measured elements content in reference materials was in satisfactory agreement with the certified values.

Abstract:Environmental pollution allows heavy metals to interact with ecosystems, bioaccumulating and passing through the food chain. Animals and human scan consume contaminated species and reach toxic and harmful concentrations in their organisms. While there are international regulatory frameworks for heavy metal contents, these are not always known or suitable for local conditions. This situation calls for the development of locally-applicable analytical methods for the determination of heavy metal concentrations in common vegetal and animal food products. Two established methods (AOAC999.11, based on sample drying and calcination, and IPNAC-06-00, based on microwave-assisted acid digestion) were comparatively tested at the CESAQ-PUCE laboratory in Quito, Ecuador, to determine their suitability. Sample matrices used were non industrial, non-organic tomato, lettuce, and beef commonly found in local markets. Heavy metals tested were cadmium, nickel, and lead. Test guidelines and comparative parameters were based on AOAC(2002) and included quantification limits, repeatability variation coefficients, intermediate precision percentages, accuracy and calculated expanded uncertainties. Unlike method AOAC999.11, method IPNAC 06-00 performance for all parameters was with in the range of recommended expected values as per AOAC, and was therefore deemed more suitable to be applied under the local CESAQ-PUCE laboratory conditions. The validation of method IPNAC-06-00 demonstrated its local applicability. In addition, IPNAC 06-00 can beused by similar laboratories to assess contaminants concentrations and improve the base line information concerning human exposure to toxic metals.
