Abstract:A study of the temperature (T) and density (ns) dependence of conductivity σ(ns,T) of a highly disordered, two-dimensional (2D) electron system in Si demonstrates scaling behavior consistent with the existence of a metal-insulator transition (MIT). The same critical exponents are found when the Coulomb interaction is screened by the metallic gate and when it is unscreened or long range. The results strongly suggest the existence of a disorder-dominated 2D MIT, which is not directly affected by the range of the Coulomb interactions.

Abstract:Clean topological insulators exposed to a magnetic field develop Landau levels accompanied by a nonzero Hall conductivity for the infinite slab geometry. In this work we consider the case of disordered topological insulator nanowires and find, in contrast, that a zero Hall plateau emerges within a broad energy window close to the Dirac point. We numerically calculate the conductance and its distribution for a statistical ensemble of disordered nanowires, and use the conductance fluctuations to study the dependence of the insulating phase on system parameters, such as the nanowire length, disorder strength and the magnetic field.

Statistics of quantum transport in metal nanowires with surface disorder

Abstract:Experimental conductance histograms built from several thousand successive breakings of sodium nanowires exhibit peaks up to rather high conductance values (100 x 2e^2/h). In this paper, we present results from a disordered free-electron model of a metallic nanowire, which was previously successful in describing both conductance histograms and shot noise measurements in gold nanocontacts with much lower conductances. We find in particular that, with a modification of the model of disorder, the conductance histogram can be understood as an interplay of conductance quantization and disorder for low conductances (G < 10 x 2e^2/h), while peaks corresponding to higher conductance are actually a combination of several ``quantized conductance peaks''. We also predict a saturation of the shot noise at high conductance to about 1/10 of its classical value 2eI.

Abstract:In this paper we present and discuss our results for the conductance and conductance fluctuations of narrow quantum wires with two types of disorder: boundary roughness (hard wall confining potential) and islands of strongly scattering impurities within the bulk of the wire. We use a tight--binding Hamiltonian to describe the quantum wire, infinite perfect leads, a two--terminal Landauer--type formula for the conductance, and the recursive single-particle Green's function technique. We find that conductance quantization is easily destroyed by strong scattering. We also find that Anderson localization poses a serious restriction on the high carrier mobility predicted in quantum wires. Conductance fluctuations in narrow quantum wires are not, in general, universal (as in the metallic regime), but can be independent of the wire length over a short range of lengths.

Abstract:We calculate the conductance of tubular-shaped nanowires having many potential scatterers at random positions. Our approach is based on the scattering matrix formalism and our results analyzed within the scaling theory of disordered conductors. When increasing the energy the conductance for a big enough number of impurities in the tube manifests a systematic evolution from the localized to the metallic regimes. Nevertheless, a conspicuous drop in conductance is predicted whenever a new transverse channel is open. Comparison with the semiclassical calculation leading to purely ohmic behavior is made.

Electronic transport in Si nanowires: Role of bulk and surface disorder

Abstract:We calculate the resistance and mean free path in long metallic and semiconducting silicon nanowires (SiNWs) using two different numerical approaches: A real space Kubo method and a recursive Green's function method. We compare the two approaches and find that they are complementary: depending on the situation a preferable method can be identified. Several numerical results are presented to illustrate the relative merits of the two methods. Our calculations of relaxed atomic structures and their conductance properties are based on density functional theory without introducing adjustable parameters. Two specific models of disorder are considered: Un-passivated, surface reconstructed SiNWs are perturbed by random on-site (Anderson) disorder whereas defects in hydrogen passivated wires are introduced by randomly removed H atoms. The un-passivated wires are very sensitive to disorder in the surface whereas bulk disorder has almost no influence. For the passivated wires, the scattering by the hydrogen vacancies is strongly energy dependent and for relatively long SiNWs (L>200 nm) the resistance changes from the Ohmic to the localization regime within a 0.1 eV shift of the Fermi energy. This high sensitivity might be used for sensor applications.

Abstract:In the ideal disorder-free situation, a two-dimensional band gap insulator has an activation energy for conductivity equal to half the band gap $\Delta$. But transport experiments usually exhibit a much smaller activation energy at low temperature, and the relation between this activation energy and $\Delta$ is unclear. Here we consider the temperature-dependent conductivity of a two-dimensional insulator on a substrate containing Coulomb impurities, with random potential amplitude $\Gamma \gg \Delta$. We show that the conductivity generically exhibits three regimes of conductivity, and only the highest temperature regime exhibits an activation energy that reflects the band gap. At lower temperatures, the conduction proceeds through activated hopping or Efros-Shklovskii variable-range hopping between electron and hole puddles created by the disorder. We show that the activation energy and characteristic temperature associated with these processes steeply collapse near a critical impurity concentration. Larger concentrations lead to an exponentially small activation energy and exponentially long localization length, which in mesoscopic samples can appear as a disorder-induced insulator-to-metal transition. We also arrive at a similar steep disorder driven insulator-metal transition in thin films of three-dimensional topological insulators with large dielectric constant, for which Coulomb impurities inside the film create a large disorder potential due to confinement of their electric field inside the film.

Abstract:Motivated by a recent breakthrough transport experiment [Phys. Rev. B.107.245423 (2023)] in Majorana nanowires, we theoretically investigate local and nonlocal transport in Majorana nanowires in various disorder regimes, correlating the transport properties with the corresponding local and total density of states as well as various topological diagnostics. We find three distinct disorder regimes, with weak (strong) disorder regimes manifesting (not manifesting) topological superconductivity with clear end Majorana zero modes for longer (but not necessarily for shorter) wires. The intermediate disorder regime is both interesting and challenging because the topology depends on many details in addition to the strength of disorder, such as the precise disorder configuration and the wire length. The intermediate disorder regime often manifests multiple effective transitions between topological and nontopological phases as a function of system parameters (e.g., the Zeeman field), and is consistent with the recent Microsoft experiment reflecting small topological gaps and narrow topological regimes in the parameter space.

Abstract:The interplay of disorder and short finite wire length is the crucial physics hindering progress in the semiconductor-superconductor nanowire platform for realizing non-Abelian Majorana zero modes (MZM). Disorder effectively segments the nanowire into isolated patches of quantum dots (QD) which act as subgap Andreev bound states often mimicking MZMs. In this work, we propose and develop a new theoretical approach to model disorder, effectively a spatially varying effective mass model, which does not rely on incorporating unknown microscopic details of disorder into the Hamiltonian. This model effectively segments the wire into multiple QDs, characterized by highly enhanced effective mass at impurity sites leading to the segmentation of the wire into effective random QDs. We find that this model can reproduce disorder physics, providing a crystal clear way to understand the effects of disorder by comparing the mean free path to the superconducting coherence length. In addition, this model allows precise control over the disorder regime, enabling us to evaluate the reliability of topological invariants (TI) in predicting MZMs. We find that TIs alone may yield a significant false positive rate as indicators for topology in the actual wire with increasing disorder strength. Therefore, we propose new indicators to characterize the spatial distribution of the zero-energy state, emphasizing the key necessity for isolated MZMs localized at wire ends. Employing this set of new indicators for stringent characterizations, we explore their experimental relevance to the measured differential conductance spectra. Our findings highlight the critical role of isolated localized states, beyond the TI, in identifying topological MZMs. We believe that this approach is a powerful tool for studying realistic Majorana nanowires where disorder and short wire length obfuscate the underlying topological physics.

Robustness of Half-Integer Quantized Hall Conductivity against Disorder in an Anisotropic Dirac Semimetal with Parity Anomaly

Abstract:Two-dimensional Dirac semimetals with a single massless Dirac cone exhibit the parity anomaly. Usually, such a kind of anomalous topological semimetallic phase in real materials is unstable where any amount of disorder can drive it into a diffusive metal and destroy the half-integer quantized Hall conductivity as an indicator of parity anomaly. Here, based on low-energy effective model, we propose an anisotropic Dirac semimetal which explicitly breaks time-reversal symmetry and carries a half-integer quantized Hall conductivity. This topological semimetallic phase can be realized on a deformed honeycomb lattice subjected to a magnetic flux. Moreover, we perceptively investigate the disorder correction to the Hall conductivity. The results show that the effects of disorder can be strongly suppressed and thereby the nearly half-integer quantization of Hall conductivity can exist in a wide region of disorder, indicating that our proposed anisotropic Dirac semimetal is an exciting platform to investigate the parity anomaly phenomena.

Abstract:We determine analytically the distribution of conductances of quasi one-dimensional disordered electron systems, neglecting electron-electron interaction, for all strengths of disorder. We find that in the crossover region between the metallic and insulating regimes, P(g) is highly asymmetric, given by ``one-sided'' log-normal distribution. For larger disorder, the tail of the log-normal distribution is cut-off for g > 1 by a Gaussian.

Abstract:Transport plays a key role in characterizing topological insulators and semimetals. Understanding the effect of disorder is crucial to assess the robustness of experimental signatures for topology. In this work, we find the absence of localization in nodal line semimetals for long-range scalar disorder and a large range of disorder strengths. Using a continuum transfer matrix approach, we find that the conductivity in the plane and out of the plane of the nodal line increases with system size and disorder strength. We substantiate these findings by a perturbative calculation and show that the conductivity increases with disorder strength using the Kubo formula in the self-consistent Born approximation. We also find that the system remains metallic for vector disorder and that vector disorder can drive a transition from an insulating to a metallic regime. Our results demonstrate the absence of localization in a three-dimensional bulk system.

Abstract:We consider theoretically the physics of bulk topological superconductivity accompanied by boundary non-Abelian Majorana zero modes in semiconductor-superconductor (SM-SC) hybrid systems consisting of finite wires in the presence of correlated disorder arising from random charged impurities. We find the system to manifest a highly complex behavior due to the subtle interplay between finite wire length and finite disorder, leading to copious low-energy in-gap states throughout the wire and considerably complicating the interpretation of tunneling spectroscopic transport measurements used extensively to search for Majorana modes. The presence of disorder-induced low-energy states may lead to the non-existence of end Majorana zero modes even when tunneling spectroscopy manifests zero bias conductance peaks in local tunneling and signatures of bulk gap closing/reopening in the nonlocal transport. In short wires within the intermediate disorder regime, apparent topology may manifest in small ranges ("patches") of parameter values, which may or may not survive the long wire limit depending on various details. Because of the dominance of disorder-induced in-gap states, the system may even occasionally have an appropriate topological invariant without manifesting isolated end Majorana zero modes. We discuss our findings in the context of a recent breakthrough experiment from Microsoft reporting the simultaneous observations of zero bias conductance peaks in local tunneling and gap opening in nonlocal transport within small patches of parameter space. Based on our analysis, we believe that the disorder strength to SC gap ratio must decrease further for the definitive realization of non-Abelian Majorana zero modes in SM-SC devices.

Influence of structural disorder and large-scale geometric fluctuations on the Coherent Transport of Metallic Junctions and Molecular Wires

Abstract:Structural disorder is present in almost all experimental measurements of electronic transport through single molecules or molecular wires. To assess its influence on the conductance is computationally demanding, because a large number of conformations must be considered. Here we analyze an approximate recursive layer Green function approach for the ballistic transport through quasi one-dimensional nano-junctions. We find a rapid convergence of the method with its control parameter, the layer thickness, and good agreement with existing experimental and theoretical data. Because the computational effort rises only linearly with system size, this method permits treatment of very large systems. We investigate the conductance of gold- and silver wires of different sizes and conformations. For weak electrode disorder and imperfect coupling between electrode and wire we find conductance variations of approximately 20%. Overall we find the conductance of silver junctions well described by the immediate vicinity of narrowest point in the junction, a result that may explain the observation of well-conserved conductance plateaus in recent experiments on silver junctions. In an application to flexible oligophene wires, we find that strongly distorted conformations that are sterically forbidden at zero temperature, contribute significantly to the observed average zero-bias conductance of the molecular wire.

Abstract:We show that, in the presence of a deformable lattice potential, the nature of the disorder-driven metal-insulator transition is fundamentally changed with respect to the noninteracting (Anderson) scenario. For strong disorder, even a modest electron-phonon interaction is found to dramatically renormalize the random potential, opening a mobility gap at the Fermi energy. This process, which reflects disorder-enhanced polaron formation, is here given a microscopic basis by treating the lattice deformations and Anderson localization effects on the same footing. We identify an intermediate "bad insulator" transport regime which displays resistivity values exceeding the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit and with a negative temperature coefficient, as often observed in strongly disordered metals. Our calculations reveal that this behavior originates from significant temperature-induced rearrangements of electronic states due to enhanced interaction effects close to the disorder-driven metal-insulator transition.

Electron transport in a weakly disordered Weyl semimetal

Abstract:Weyl semimetal is a solid material with isolated touching points between conduction and valence bands in its Brillouin zone -- Weyl points. Low energy excitations near these points exhibit a linear dispersion and act as relativistic massless particles. Weyl points are stable topological objects robust with respect to most perturbations. We study effects of weak disorder on the spectral and transport properties of Weyl semimetals in the limit of low energies. We use a model of Gaussian white-noise potential and apply dimensional regularization scheme near three dimensions to treat divergent terms in the perturbation theory. In the framework of self-consistent Born approximation, we find closed expressions for the average density of states and conductivity. Both quantities are analytic functions in the limit of zero energy. We also include interference terms beyond the self-consistent Born approximation up to the third order in the disorder strength. These interference corrections are stronger than the mean-field result and non-analytic as functions of energy. Our main result is the dependence of conductivity (in units $e^2/h$) on the electron concentration $\sigma = \sigma_0 - 0.891\, n^{1/3} + 0.115\, (n^{2/3}/\sigma_0) \ln|n|$.

Abstract:We study the conductance of chaotic or disordered wires in a situation where equilibrium transport decomposes into biased diffusion and a counter-moving regular current. A possible realization is a semiconductor nanostructure with transversal magnetic field and suitably patterned surfaces. We find a non-trivial dependence of the conductance on the wire length which differs qualitatively from Ohm's law by the existence of a characteristic length scale and a finite saturation value.

Disorder-induced phase transitions in double Weyl semimetals

Abstract:The double Weyl semimetal (DWSM) is a newly proposed topological material that hosts Weyl points with chiral charge n = 2. The disorder effect in DWSM is investigated by adopting the tight-binding Hamilto-nian. Using the transfer matrix method and the noncommutative Kubo formula, we numerically calculate the localization length and the Hall conductivity in the presence of the on-site nonmagnetic disorder or orbital (spin-flip) disorders, and give the corresponding global phase diagrams. For the on-site nonmagnetic disorder, the system undergoes the DWSM-3D quantum anomalous Hall (3D QAH) and normal insulator (NI)-DWSM phase transitions, and evolves into the diffusive metal phase before entering the gapless Anderson insulator phase, which is consistent with the Weyl semimetal. For ax orbital disorder, increasing disorder strength can generate a pair of Weyl nodes at the boundary of the Brillouin zone and induce a 3D QAH-DWSM phase transition. Surprisingly, DOS calculations manifest that the insulator phase induced by the ax disorder is gapped, which is different from the gapless DOS in the system with a0 disorders. Another difference is the direct DWSM-NI transition. These results indicate that the a0 and ax disorders have a diverse impact on the system. Then we investigate the interplay of orbital disorders for both disordered 3D QAH phase and DWSM phase. The disorder-induced transitions at low disorders can be well understood in terms of the self-consistent Born approximation.
Splitting of the Zero-Energy Landau Level and Universal Dissipative Conductivity at Critical Points in Disordered Graphene

Abstract:We report on robust features of the longitudinal conductivity ($\sigma_{xx}$) of the graphene zero-energy Landau level in presence of disorder and varying magnetic fields. By mixing an Anderson disorder potential with a low density of sublattice impurities, the transition from metallic to insulating states is theoretically explored as a function of Landau-level splitting, using highly efficient real-space methods to compute the Kubo conductivities (both $\sigma_{xx}$ and Hall $\sigma_{xy}$). As long as valley-degeneracy is maintained, the obtained critical conductivity $\sigma_{xx}\simeq 1.4 e^{2}/h$ is robust upon disorder increase (by almost one order of magnitude) and magnetic fields ranging from about 2 to 200 Tesla. When the sublattice symmetry is broken, $\sigma_{xx}$ eventually vanishes at the Dirac point owing to localization effects, whereas the critical conductivities of pseudospin-split states (dictating the width of a $\sigma_{xy}=0$ plateau) change to $\sigma_{xx}\simeq e^{2}/h$, regardless of the splitting strength, superimposed disorder, or magnetic strength. These findings point towards the non dissipative nature of the quantum Hall effect in disordered graphene in presence of Landau level splitting.

Nonlocal conductance of a Majorana wire near the topological transition

Abstract:We develop a theory of the nonlocal conductance $G_{RL}(V)$ for a disordered Majorana wire tuned near the topological transition critical point. We show that the differential conductance is an odd function of bias, $G_{RL}(V) = -G_{RL}(-V)$. We factorize the conductance into terms describing the contacts between the wire and the normal leads, and the term describing quasiparticle propagation along the wire. Topological transition affects only the latter term. At the critical point, the quasiparticle localization length has a logarithmic singularity at the Fermi level, $l(E) \propto \ln(1 / E)$. This singularity directly manifests in the conductance magnitude, as $\ln |G_{RL}(V) / G_Q| \sim L / l(eV)$ for the wire of length $L \gg l(eV)$. Tuning the wire away from the immediate vicinity of the critical point changes the monotonicity of $l(E)$. This change in monotonicty allows us to define the width of the critical region around the transition point.
