Abstract:Abstract Multiple analysis has indicated that over 50% of the oil production in the next 20-25 years is going to be produced through enhanced recovery procedures including polymer flooding. The heuristics for polymer flooding says that it is feasible to apply polymer flooding in reservoirs having oil viscosities in the range of 10 to 150 mPa.s. The main factor limiting this heuristic limit for polymer floods is that the injected water viscosity required for higher mobility ratio leads to pumping inefficiencies and low polymer injectivity rates. In this paper, we suggest a supramolecule based on the complexation of a long-chain amino-amide and maleic acid which can adjust its viscosity values reversibly to overcome the heuristic problem related to polymer floods. The concept is fundamentally based on the fact the supramolecule system which is injected in the reservoir will initially be maintained at a low viscosity and on application of external pH stimuli will increase in viscosity values prior to contact with oil. Our laboratory studies indicate that such a system is also tolerant to high temperatures and salinities Popular polymer systems used floe EOR purposes on experiencing extreme shear stresses and temperature break-up and degrade, however the supramolecule system dissemble and reassemble making the supramolecular system "healable" in a manner. The supramolecular systems can also adapt to confining environments, for example, on flow through narrow channels, the supramolecules undergo molecular scission. The supramolecules proposed could be used for viscous oil in thin oil sand zones, permafrost and other environmentally constraining systems. This paper primarily focusses, on the development and properties of a novel supramolecular system which has adjustable viscosities and interfacial properties and can be resistant to high temperatures and salinities. This Supramolecular system can significantly improve the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of a polymer flood process and can be utilized universally.

Abstract:Summary The concept is that the viscosity of injected supramolecular system will be maintained at initially low values for easy injection and pumping, and then increased by means of an external pH stimulus just before or upon contacting oil. Our promising lab-scale preliminary studies have indicated that such supramolecular systems possess not only reversible pH-responsive properties but also very tolerant against high salinities and temperatures. Supramolecular solutions can adapt to the confining environment. For instance, when a height molecular weight polymer macromolecules are forced to flow into narrow channels and pores, molecular scission processes may take place. Supramolecular solutions can have significant impact on the cases where thermal methods cannot be used for some viscous oils due to thin zones, permafrost conditions and environmental constraints. This project is primarily aimed at developing novel supramolecular assemblies with adjustable viscosity and interfacial properties that have robust tolerance against high temperatures and salinities. Such supramolecular assemblies will be used to significantly improve the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of displacement fluids used in EOR. Overall, there is a significant potential for application of supramolecular solutions in the US and throughout the world.

Microscale Interactions of Surfactant and Polymer Chemicals at Crude Oil/Water Interface for Enhanced Oil Recovery

Abstract:Summary The conventional experimental techniques used for performance evaluation of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) chemicals, such as polymers and surfactants, have been mostly limited to bulk viscosity, phase behavior/interfacial tension (IFT), and thermal stability measurements. Furthermore, fundamental studies exploring the different microscale interactions instigated by the EOR chemicals at the crude oil/water interface are scanty. The objective of this experimental study is to fill this existing knowledge gap and deliver an important understanding on underlying interfacial sciences and their potential implications for oil recovery in chemical EOR. Different microscale interactions of EOR chemicals, at crude oil/water interface, were studied by using a suite of experimental techniques, including an interfacial shear rheometer, Langmuir trough, and coalescence time measurement apparatus at both ambient (23°C) and elevated (70°C) temperatures. The reservoir crude oil and high-salinity injection water (57,000 ppm total dissolved solids) were used. Two chemicals, an amphoteric surfactant (at 1,000 ppm) and a sulfonated polyacrylamide polymer (at 500 and 700 ppm) were chosen because they are tolerant to high-salinity and high-temperature conditions. Interfacial viscous and elastic moduli (viscoelasticity), interface pressures, interface compression energies, and coalescence time between crude oil droplets are the major experimental data measured. Interfacial shear rheology results showed that surfactant favorably reduced the viscoelasticity of crude oil/water interface by decreasing the elastic and viscous modulus and increasing the phase angle to soften the interfacial film. Polymers in brine either alone or together with surfactant increased the viscous and elastic modulus and decreased the phase angle at the oil/water interface, thereby contributing to interfacial film rigidity. Interfacial pressures with polymers remained almost in the same order of magnitude as the high-salinity brine. In contrast, a significant reduction in interfacial pressures with surfactant was observed. The interface compression energies indicated the same trend and were reduced by approximately two orders of magnitude when surfactant was added to the brine. The surfactant was also able to retain similar interface behavior under compression even in the presence of polymers. The coalescence times between crude oil droplets were increased by polymers, while they were substantially decreased by the surfactant. These consistent findings from different experimental techniques demonstrated the adverse interactions of polymers at the crude oil/water interface to result in more rigid films, while confirming the high efficiency of the surfactant to soften the interfacial film, promote the oil droplets coalescence, and mobilize substantial amounts of residual oil in chemical EOR. This experimental study, for the first time, characterized the microscale interactions of surfactant-polymer chemicals at the crude oil/water interface. The applicability of several interfacial experimental techniques has been demonstrated to successfully understand underlying interfacial sciences and oil mobilization mechanisms in chemical EOR. These techniques and methods can provide potential means to efficiently screen and optimize EOR chemical formulations for better oil recovery in both sandstone and carbonate reservoirs.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanisms of oil/brine/rock interfacial interactions from a nanoscale perspective is essential for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques employed in the exploration of shale oil. Under formation conditions, both metal cations and water molecules could form bridging connections between rock surfaces and the polar oil components, which are referred to as hydrated ion bridges (HIB) and water bridges (WB). In this work, we have comprehensively analyzed the interaction and destruction of various HIB and WB systems. Quasi-static pulling processes were investigated based on first-principles calculations. We found that ions can increase the oil-rock interaction strength, especially for the divalent ions. Various different contributions to interfacial energy were scrutinized from several different approaches. Our results show that water-valeric acid could be the most probable destruction sites at oil/brine/rock interface. Hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions were visualized in an intuitive way, which enhance our comprehension on the interaction and destruction of HIB and WB connections. These findings may provide an in-depth insight into oil/brine/rock interfacial interactions and theoretical support for the effective oil extraction.

Experimental investigation on the effect of interfacial properties of chemical flooding for enhanced heavy oil recovery

Abstract:Chemical compound flooding has demonstrated its efficacy in enhancing light oil recovery through ultra-low interfacial tension (IFT). However, the optimization of chemical systems properties for displacing heavy oil has not been clarified. This research aims to address this problem by designing common polymer and three surfactant-polymer (SP) systems with varying IFT and interfacial viscoelasticity behaviors, and comparing their ability to recover heavy oil. The findings of core flooding tests indicate that the system with low IFT and high interfacial viscoelasticity simultaneously has a better displacement efficiency for heavy oil than other flood systems, which could enhance heavy oil recovery by 21.94%. Micro-model tests reveal the underlying mechanisms driving the enhanced macro-scale oil recovery. The emulsion formation and interface expansion facilitated by low IFT, as well as increased emulsion stability and reduced snap-off of oil droplets due to the presence of an elastic oil-water interfacial film. These phenomena is more capable of driving microscopic heterogeneous remaining oil and film remaining oil than other solution. The comparative experiment analysis shows that the difference in chemical flooding between heavy oil and light oil is caused by the discrepant distributions of surfactants at the oil-water interface. The light oil interface is a monolayer surfactant molecular film, the heavy components and surfactant moleculars exhibit both competitive and cooperative adsorption phenomena at the oil-water interface. The occurrence of viscosity reduction and increased emulsion stability are more influential factors in the process of heavy oil displacement than those of conventional ultra-low IFT systems used for light oil recovery.

Abstract:Chemical Cold Heavy Oil Production (CCHOP) represents an effective approach to exploit heavy oil by injecting Oil Viscosity Reducer (OVR). However, the challenge lies in the crossflow of traditional OVR through high permeability channels in heterogeneous heavy oil reservoirs. a supramolecular compound system comprising Interfacially Active Polymer (IAP) and Emulsifying Viscosity Reducer (EVR) were proposed as a novel CHHOP agent to address this problem. A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the heavy oil displacement performance and mechanism of the IAP-EVR compound system, including assessments of heavy oil emulsification, emulsion stability, rheological properties, single-core oil displacement, and heterogeneous microscopic oil displacement. The results demonstrate that a stable O/W emulsion can be formed with the 0.1 wt% IAP-0.3 wt% EVR compound system under a low mixing rate of 200 rpm. The emulsion exhibits only an 8.0% dewatering rate and a low TSI value of 0.8. Moreover, the compound system effectively reduces the heavy oil viscosity from 1000 mPa·s to 325.7 mPa·s, facilitating the emulsification of the remaining oil after water flooding and enhancing its flowability, thus improving oil displacement efficiency. Additionally, the 0.1 wt% IAP-0.3 wt% EVR compound system increases the solution viscosity to 600 mPa·s, leading to a low W/O mobility ratio, which enhances the swept volume. Supramolecular association is identified as a crucial mechanism for stabilizing the emulsion and increasing the solution viscosity, as evidenced by a high elastic modulus of 144.7 mPa and a transition area observed in the viscosity-shear rate curve. In comparison to HPAM and IAP, the 0.1 wt% IAP-0.3 wt% EVR compound system yields higher oil recoveries of 21.84 %OOIP in the single core experiment. Moreover, noticeable emulsification is observed in the produced fluid, and oil recoveries of 89.85 %OOIP and 92.98 %OOIP are achieved in high and low permeable areas, respectively, in the heterogeneous microscopic model. These results indicate a mechanism that enhances both the swept volume and oil displacement efficiency. Overall, the findings of this study provide a laboratory foundation for the promising application of the IAP-EVR compound system in heterogeneous heavy oil reservoirs.

Abstract:Water-soluble hydrophobically associating polymers are reviewed with particular emphasis on their application in improved oil recovery (IOR). These polymers are very similar to conventional water-soluble polymers used in IOR, except that they have a small number of hydrophobic groups incorporated into the polymer backbone. At levels of incorporation of less than 1 mol%, these hydrophobic groups can significantly change polymer performance. These polymers have potential for use in mobility control, drilling fluids and profile modification. This review includes synthesis, characterization, stability, rheology and flow in porous media of associating polymers in IOR are also examined. 100 refs., 2 tabs.

A Molecular Dynamics Study on Low-Pressure Carbon Dioxide in the Water/Oil Interface for Enhanced Oil Recovery

Abstract:Summary The microscopic displacement efficiency of supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2)-based enhanced oil recovery (EOR) depends critically on the phase behavior of CO2 and residual oil. Traditionally, we assume that the main drive mechanisms of supercritical CO2 EOR are attributed to oil swelling and reduced oil viscosity, and research focuses on how the supercritical CO2 interacts with remaining oil under the reservoir conditions. However, our recent study finds that once the CO2 is introduced into the reservoir, CO2 partitions into the aqueous and oil phases, reducing the interfacial tension (IFT) between the oil and water. This is particularly important when CO2 is generated through a series of chemical reactions for in-situ CO2 EOR. In this paper, we used molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the interfacial properties between water and oil with different mole fractions of CO2 in pressures below the minimum miscibility pressure. Simulation results show that with the increase in CO2 mole fraction, rather than evenly distributed in phases, CO2 molecules are prone to concentrate in the water/oil interface region, which decreases IFT between the aqueous phase and oil. Furthermore, the effect of CO2 orientation on the water/oil IFT reduction was observed. The change of CO2 concentration affects CO2 orientation near the interface, which in return dominates the IFT change.

Abstract:In recent years, molecular simulations have received extensive attention in the study of reservoir fluid and rock properties, interactions, and related phenomena at the atomistic scale. For example, in molecular dynamics simulation, interesting properties are taken out of the time evolution analysis of atomic positions and velocities by numerical solution of Newtonian equations for all atomic motion in the system. These technologies assists conducting “computer experiments” that might instead of be impossible, very costly, or even extremely perilous to carry out. Whether it is from the primary oil recovery to the tertiary oil recovery or from laboratory experiment to field test, it is difficult to clarify the oil displacement flow mechanism of underground reservoirs. Computer molecular simulation reveals the seepage mechanism of a certain oil displacement at the microscopic scale, and enriches the specific oil displacement flow theory system. And the molecular design and effect prediction of a certain oil-displacing agent were studied, and its role in the reservoir was simulated, and the most suitable oil-displacing agent and the best molecular structure of the most suitable oil-displacing agent were obtained. To give a theoretical basic for the development of oilfield flooding technology and enhanced oil/gas recovery. This paper presents an overview of molecular simulation techniques and its applications to explore enhanced oil/gas recovery engineering research, which will provide useful instructions for characterizing the reservoir fluid and rock and their behaviors in various oil-gas reserves, and it greatly contribute to perform optimal operation and better design of production plants.

Abstract:Various experimental methods were used to investigate interaction between polymer and anionic/nonionic surfactants and mechanisms of enhanced oil recovery by anionic/nonionic surfactants in the present paper. The complex surfactant molecules are adsorbed in the mixed micelles or aggregates formed by the hydrophobic association of hydrophobic groups of polymers, making the surfactant molecules at oil-water interface reduce and the value of interfacial tension between oil and water increase. A dense spatial network structure is formed by the interaction between the mixed aggregates and hydrophobic groups of the polymer molecular chains, making the hydrodynamic volume of the aggregates and the viscosity of the polymer solution increase. Because of the formation of the mixed adsorption layer at oil and water interface by synergistic effect, ultra-low interfacial tension (∼2.0 × 10−3 mN/m) can be achieved between the novel surfactant system and the oil samples in this paper. Because of hydrophobic interaction, wettability alteration of oil-wet surface was induced by the adsorption of the surfactant system on the solid surface. Moreover, the studied surfactant system had a certain degree of spontaneous emulsification ability (D50 = 25.04 µm) and was well emulsified with crude oil after the mechanical oscillation (D50 = 4.27 µm).

Abstract:The efficient development of oil resources is significant for alleviating the increasingly serious contradiction between oil supply and demand and ensuring national oil security. Surfactant flooding technology is one of the essential methods to enhance oil recovery and has been widely used in oil and gas development. The screening and development of traditional surfactants for oil displacement are mainly focused on reducing interfacial tension based on the theory of capillary number while ignoring the emulsification effect of surfactants. For different types of residual oil/remaining oil, the main contradictions faced by the target reservoir should be thoroughly analyzed to clarify whether the performance of surfactants used for oil displacement is mainly to reduce interfacial tension or strong emulsification capacity, and then screen surfactants suitable for reservoir characteristics and crude oil properties. In this article, the principle and application of surfactant flooding technology are reviewed from two aspects of interfacial tension and emulsification performance, the interrelationship between interfacial tension and emulsification capacity is explored, and the evaluation indicators and existing problems of surfactant used for oil displacement are analyzed in detail. Most of the evaluation methods for emulsification in the past were based on water extraction rate. A method for evaluating the emulsification ability of surfactants to crude oil is introduced. It is expected to provide scientific guidance for the screening and development of surfactants for oil displacement.

Abstract:Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques can be classified majorly into thermal and non-thermal methods. Thermal methods can be applied to specific field conditions; whereas, non-thermal methods can be applied to a wide range of reservoirs with different conditions. In certain reservoirs where thermal recovery is not possible, Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (CEOR) method is applied. The interfacial properties between the reservoir fluids, namely crude oil and formation water, determine the microscopic displacement efficiency of CEOR, specifically for surfactant and/or alkali. The primary benefit from an application of it is to mobilize residual oil saturation by establishing an interfacial tension (IFT) between crude oil and water that is sufficiently low to overcome capillary forces and allow the oil to flow. This paper reviews EOR methods like surfactant and polymer flooding. Subsequently, difference between the uses of the surfactant or polymers according to the favourable reservoir parameters and field conditions. The oil recovery is enriched by either reducing the IFT between the oil–water interfaces using surfactant or by developing a favourable mobility ratio between the displacing water and displaced oil using polymers. Important parameters considered for designing an effective surfactant and polymer formulation design are also studied.

Abstract:Interfacial properties are of critical importance to various separation applications. In heavy oil recovery, for example, a low oil‐water interfacial tension (IFT) benefits the separation of heavy oil from their host rocks, which becomes problematic in the later stage of oil‐water separation. CO2‐responsive surfactants were investigated to enhance the overall heavy oil recovery by switching their interfacial activity to the desired state in each stage. The surfactants at interfacially active state greatly enhanced the separation of heavy oil from hosting solids, as demonstrated by measuring contact angle and oil liberation using on‐line visualization. Meanwhile, the resulting heavy oil‐in‐water emulsions could also be easily demulsified by the bubbling of CO2 gas, which switched off the interfacial activity of the surfactants. Furthermore, CO2‐responsive surfactants could be partially recycled in process water to improve sustainability, making CO2‐responsive surfactants to be promising chemical aids in heavy oil production and many other vital industries.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Low permeability oil and gas resources are rich and have great potential all over the world, which has gradually become the main goal of oil and gas development. However, after traditional primary and secondary exploitation, there is still a large amount of remaining oil that has not been recovered. Therefore, in recent years, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technologies for low permeability reservoirs have been greatly developed to further improve crude oil production. This study presents a comprehensive review of EOR technologies in low permeability reservoirs with an emphasis on gas flooding, surfactant flooding, nanofluid flooding and imbibition EOR technologies. In addition, two kinds of gel systems are introduced for conformance control in low permeability reservoirs with channeling problems. Finally, the technical challenges, directions and outlooks of EOR in low permeability reservoirs are addressed.
