Abstract:China’s oil fields have entered the stage of tertiary oil recovery. The development of oil displacement agents adapted to high temperature and high salt production environment has attracted extensive attention. In this paper, polyacrylamide, a traditional oil displacement agent, was modified, and acrylamide/2-acrylamyl-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid/sodium p-styrene sulfonate（AM/AMPS/SSS） terpolymer was prepared and optimized using aqueous solution polymerization. The effects of various reaction conditions on the apparent viscosity of the product aqueous solution were explored, and the optimum preparation conditions of terpolymer were obtained. The apparent viscosity, heat and salt resistance of terpolymer solution were studied by using rotary viscosimeter. Finally,AM/AMPS/SSS terpolymer with obvious heat and salt resistance and good thermal stability was obtained, which has a good application prospect in the current severe crude oil exploitation environment.
Insights into Molecular Dynamics and Oil Extraction Behavior of the Polymeric Surfactant in a Multilayered Heterogeneous Reservoir

Abstract:Interlayer heterogeneity, an inevitable and complex challenge during water flooding, seriously constrains the spread of the sweep region and oil recovery enhancement in multilayered heterogeneous reservoirs. To overcome this challenge, a novel polymeric surfactant, having an excellent performance in the reduction of interfacial tension (IFT) and the increase of viscosity of displacing fluid, is applied for enlarging the sweep resonance and increasing the oil washing efficiency. Through the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, the molecular distributing mechanisms of the polymeric surfactant at the oil-water interface are analyzed to provide the theoretical basis for explaining the microscopic mechanism of oil extraction. To directly reflect the microscopic behavior of oil extraction, multiple transparent sand-packed models are designed to investigate the flowing behavior of different fluids and the extracted mechanisms of the remaining oil in both pore and macroscales. The multilayered heterogeneous reservoirs consisting of high-, moderate-, and low-permeability layers are fabricated to represent a heterogeneous characteristic. The recognition from the visual experiment and MD simulation can study the performance control, the extracting performance of the remaining oil, and the expression of the displacing front from different perspectives. The results from MD simulation demonstrate that the polymeric surfactant can promote the disintegration of the remaining oil and enhance its mobility. The experimental results indicate that the sweep efficiency is restricted by viscous fingering and tongue advance. Through the analysis of mathematical models, the rising mobility ratio and the location of the displacing front have a strong positive relationship with viscous fingering and tongue advance, which can reasonably explain the plugging performance of the polymeric surfactant, greatly improving the sweeping effect of the whole reservoir. Moreover, the Marangoni effect generated by the IFT gradient can induce the transformation of interfacial energy to displacement kinetic energy by the emulsification of the oil-water interface so that the remaining oil in the blind-end pore can be effectively extracted. However, by comparing data from image quantification techniques and production dynamic performance, the sweep efficiency (484%) was significantly greater than that of oil recovery (300%), demonstrating that the expanded sweep effect still plays a dominant role in the extraction of remaining oil after polymeric surfactant flooding. This study provides a novel plugging and effective washing agent that is expected to be an excellent and comprehensive method for solving the problem of low oil recovery in multilayered heterogeneous reservoirs.
Study on the Structure–Activity Relationship and Oil Displacement Characteristics of the Polysurfactant Agent

Abstract:This study examines a versatile polymer known as polysurfactant, which is synthesized by co-polymerizing flexible acrylamide and sodium acrylate hydrocarbon chain. The polymer serves as a backbone and possesses active functional groups. Notably, the polysurfactant exhibits superior plugging and flooding abilities compared to conventional polymers. The primary objective of this paper is to investigate the properties and oil displacement characteristics of the polysurfactant through indoor physical simulation experiments. The results demonstrate that the multi-branched structure of the polysurfactant enhances its ability to associate, leading to the formation of a unique spatial network structure. The inclusion of multi-branched structures notably amplifies the association effect. The critical concentration for the association is estimated to be around 800 mg/L, at which juncture the polysurfactant exhibits a viscosity retention rate surpassing 90% subsequent to shearing. Furthermore, this spatial network structure exhibits self-recovery capabilities after experiencing shear failure and displaying strong viscosity and shear resistance. In addition, the concentration of the polysurfactant can control the hydrodynamic feature size, which shows its adaptability in regulation and oil-repelling functions at reservoir permeabilities ranging from 500 to 2000 × 10−3 μm2 with resistance coefficients ranging from 108 to 320. During the microscopic oil displacement process, the polysurfactant exerts a significant impact on mobility control, while the elastic pull clearly demonstrates a commendable viscoelastic oil displacement effect. The polysurfactant exhibits a specific degree of emulsification capability towards crude oil, leading to the emulsion exhibiting typical pseudoplastic fluid characteristics. The utilization of emulsification transportation and emulsification blockage contributes to the enhancement of oil recovery. As a result, the polysurfactant exhibits multifaceted capabilities, encompassing profile control, flooding, and plugging, owing to its unique structural characteristics. Through the implementation of a field test focused on flooding in the Daqing Oilfield, a significant enhancement in the recovery rate of 10.85% is observed, accompanied by a favorable input–output ratio of 1:3.86, thereby generating significant economic advantages.

Abstract:Polymers can increase the viscosity of water, reduce the relative permeability of the water phase, and enhance the flowability of the oil phase; surfactants can form molecular films at the oil–water interface boundaries, thereby reducing interfacial tension. Surfactant/polymer (S/P) flooding technology for enhancing oil recovery has become a major way to increase crude oil production. This study used dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) technology to simulate the emulsification process of a four-component composite system consisting of oil, water, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), and partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM). By changing the concentration of the S/P system, the effect on emulsification behavior was analyzed. Combined with particle distribution diagrams and interfacial tension parameters, the effect of the emulsification behavior on the performance of the S/P binary system was analyzed. On this basis, the effect of different emulsion performances on the recovery factor was evaluated using micro-experiments. The study found that the S/P system that produced stable emulsification had a lower interfacial tension and relatively good effect on improving the recovery factor. Increasing the concentration of the polymer and surfactant may cause changes in the interfacial film of the emulsion, thereby affecting the ability of the S/P system to reduce interfacial tension and may not improve the oil recovery factor. The research results help to better analyze and screen the S/P system used for oil extraction and improve crude oil recovery.

Abstract:There are more than 40% remaining oil trapped in the reservoir in the mature oilfield even after second and tertiary recovery processes. High performance chemical agent was required for the trapped oil further mobilization. Polymeric surfactant was synthesized by grafting the active ground into the polymer skeleton. It has the advantages of surfactant polymer (SP) flooding and overcome the chromatographic separation during SP flooding. However, it is still unclear how the supramolecular molecular structure of polymeric surfactant affects its properties. Two kinds of polymeric surfactants named HB and HD with different molecular structures were characterized in this paper. Their molecular structure, static properties and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) efficiency were examined and compared via a series of experiments. The results showed that HD was dominated by amide group with hydrophobic association structure, and exhibited the supramolecular characteristics of space network; while HB mainly consisted by ring groups, showing a straight chain structure. HD featured with a better thickening, shear-resistance and salt-resistance ability, while HB can easily emulsify oil. In the microfluidic and three parallel core flooding experiments, HD both presented a higher recovery factor due to its good mobility control performance. Cluster remaining oil obviously declined and film-liked remaining oil slightly increased during HB and HD flooding stage. The incremental oil recovery of HD after water flooding was 26.6%, which was 5.5% higher than that of HB. This work indicates the molecular structure of spatial network is preferred in the design of polymer molecular structure towards EOR in the heterogeneous reservoir.

Abstract:In this paper, in order to study the effect of emulsification on the oil displacement of the system, several polymer, surfactant/polymer (S/P) and alkali/surfactant/polymer (A/S/P) systems were prepared for experiments. Firstly, the interfacial tension of each system was investigated. After the emulsion was prepared, the droplet size was observed by microscope and the intensity of the backscattered light during the destabilisation process of the emulsion was tested with the stability analyser. The TSI value was calculated to evaluate the stability of the emulsion. Finally, the Berea core displacement experiment (chemicals are used to displace oil from the core) was carried out to test the ability to enhance the oil recovery. The experimental results show that the emulsion formed by the A/S/P system with the simulation oil has the best stability. The chemical displacement recovery is the highest, which is 32.15 %. The emulsion stability of the S/P system is second, and the chemical displacement recoveries are 17.03 % and 20.76 %, respectively. The polymer system has no interfacial activity, does not form an emulsion, and has the lowest chemical displacement recovery of 8.02 %. This shows that the deeper the degree of emulsification of the system and the more stable the emulsion, the better the oil displacement effect of the oil displacement system.

Abstract:Polymer flooding is an effective development technology to enhance oil recovery, and it has been widely used all over the world. However, after long-term polymer flooding, a large number of oilfields have experienced a sharp decline in reservoir development efficiency. High water cut wells, serious dispersion of residual oil distribution and complex reservoir conditions all bring great challenges to enhance oil recovery. In this study, the method of enhancing oil recovery after polymer flooding was studied by taking the S Oilfield as an example. A surfactant–polymer system suitable for high-permeability heterogeneous oilfields was developed, comprising biogenic surfactants and polymers. Microscopic displacement experiments were conducted using cast thin sections from the S Oilfield, and nuclear magnetic resonance was employed for core displacement experiments. Numerical simulation experiments were also conducted on the S Oilfield. The results show that the enhanced oil recovery mechanism of the surfactant–polymer system is to adjust the flow direction, expand the swept volume, emulsify crude oil and reduce interfacial tension. Surfactant–polymer flooding proves to be effective in improving recovery efficiency, significantly reducing the time of flooding and further enhancing the strong swept area. The nuclear magnetic resonance results indicate a high amplitude of passive utilization of residual oil during the surfactant–polymer flooding stage, highlighting the enormous potential for an increased recovery ratio. Surfactant–polymer flooding emerges as a more suitable technique to enhance oil recovery in the post polymer-flooding stage in high-permeability heterogeneous oilfields.

Abstract:Two kinds polymeric surfactant with good thickening capability are synthesized.The effect of molecular structure on polymer migration are investigated.IAM has a lower interface tension and better emulsifying ability than RCM.IAM shown the largest EOR potential compare to RCM and HPAM.Polymeric surfactant can simultaneously thicken aquous phase and reduce water-oil interfacial tension (IFT), which makes it present a great application prospect in the oilfield taword enhanced oil recovery (EOR). There are two kinds of polymeric surfactant with different molecular structures are commonly used to realize the salt resistance, thermal endurance and shear resistance. However, the influence of the molecular structure of polymeric surfactant on their properties related on EOR are not well understood. In the work, we synthesized two kinds of polymeric surfactants with different molecular structure which respectively named intermolecular association molecule (IAM) and rigid chain molecule (RCM). Their physico-chemical properties, porous media transportation and EOR are compared with a series of experiments. It is found that the hydrodynamic characteristic sizes and retention of IAM are higher than those of RCM via the membrane filtration test and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) scan. These features make IAM have a larger resistance factor and residual resistance factor than RCM and hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) in the same viscosity. Compare to HPAM with shear thinning, RCM presents a Newtonian fluid region and IAM presents a shear thickening region when the shear rate is lower than 1 s-1. The spatial structure of IAM can pack oil drop into its network, which make it easy to form oil-in-water-in-oil (O/W/O) emulsions. Moreover, the concentration and water-oil ratio (WOR) rarely affect the stability of IAM emulsions once the intermolecular association generated. The increamental oil recovery factor of IAM is 17.5% after water flooding in the three-layer core flooding experiments with the permeability of 500 mD, 1500 mD and 3000 mD at 55℃, which is higher than that of 14.5% for RCM and 11.4% for HPAM.<ol class="links-for-figure"><li><a class="anchor download-link u-font-sans" href="https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S1226086X21003531-ga1_lrg.jpg">Download : Download high-res image (92KB)</a></li><li><a class="anchor download-link u-font-sans" href="https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S1226086X21003531-ga1.jpg">Download : Download full-size image</a></li></ol>

Investigation on the effect of active-polymers with different functional groups for EOR

Abstract:Abstract Active-polymer attracted increasing interest as an enhancing oil recovery technology in oilfield development owing to the characteristics of polymer and surfactant. Different types of active functional groups, which grafted on the polymer branched chain, have different effects on the oil displacement performance of the active-polymers. In this article, the determination of molecular size and viscosity of active-polymers were characterized by Scatterer and Rheometer to detect the expanded swept volume ability. And the Leica microscope was used to evaluate the emulsifying property of the active-polymers, which confirmed the oil sweep efficiency. Results show that the Type I active-polymer have a greater molecular size and stronger viscosity, which is a profile control system for expanding the swept volume. The emulsification performance of Type III active-polymer is more stable, which is suitable for improving the oil cleaning efficiency. The results obtained in this paper reveal the application prospect of the active-polymer to enhance oil recovery in the development of oilfields.

Abstract:The efficient development of oil resources is significant for alleviating the increasingly serious contradiction between oil supply and demand and ensuring national oil security. Surfactant flooding technology is one of the essential methods to enhance oil recovery and has been widely used in oil and gas development. The screening and development of traditional surfactants for oil displacement are mainly focused on reducing interfacial tension based on the theory of capillary number while ignoring the emulsification effect of surfactants. For different types of residual oil/remaining oil, the main contradictions faced by the target reservoir should be thoroughly analyzed to clarify whether the performance of surfactants used for oil displacement is mainly to reduce interfacial tension or strong emulsification capacity, and then screen surfactants suitable for reservoir characteristics and crude oil properties. In this article, the principle and application of surfactant flooding technology are reviewed from two aspects of interfacial tension and emulsification performance, the interrelationship between interfacial tension and emulsification capacity is explored, and the evaluation indicators and existing problems of surfactant used for oil displacement are analyzed in detail. Most of the evaluation methods for emulsification in the past were based on water extraction rate. A method for evaluating the emulsification ability of surfactants to crude oil is introduced. It is expected to provide scientific guidance for the screening and development of surfactants for oil displacement.

Abstract:Various experimental methods were used to investigate interaction between polymer and anionic/nonionic surfactants and mechanisms of enhanced oil recovery by anionic/nonionic surfactants in the present paper. The complex surfactant molecules are adsorbed in the mixed micelles or aggregates formed by the hydrophobic association of hydrophobic groups of polymers, making the surfactant molecules at oil-water interface reduce and the value of interfacial tension between oil and water increase. A dense spatial network structure is formed by the interaction between the mixed aggregates and hydrophobic groups of the polymer molecular chains, making the hydrodynamic volume of the aggregates and the viscosity of the polymer solution increase. Because of the formation of the mixed adsorption layer at oil and water interface by synergistic effect, ultra-low interfacial tension (∼2.0 × 10−3 mN/m) can be achieved between the novel surfactant system and the oil samples in this paper. Because of hydrophobic interaction, wettability alteration of oil-wet surface was induced by the adsorption of the surfactant system on the solid surface. Moreover, the studied surfactant system had a certain degree of spontaneous emulsification ability (D50 = 25.04 µm) and was well emulsified with crude oil after the mechanical oscillation (D50 = 4.27 µm).

Abstract:In recent years, a newly developed dispersed particle gel (DPG) has attracted significant attention because of its excellent properties and a good application prospect in an enhanced oil recovery process. The preparation method is convenient and easy to scale up for the field application. The dispersed particle gel with sizes ranging from submicron to micron can block the high permeability layers by accumulating in large pore spaces or directly plugging small pore throats. Furthermore, the dispersed particle gels can achieve in-depth profile control due to the elastic deformation and migration into the reservoir's porous media. These characteristics have demonstrated great potential for the dispersed particle gels to strengthen the alkali/surfactant/polymer combination flooding system. The polymers used are the principal sources of viscosity in the system; the surfactant and alkaline produce the synergistic effect by generating the ultralow oil-water interfacial tension. The added dispersed particle gel has a synergistic viscosity increase effect, temperature tolerance, and thermal stability. However, the combined flooding system suffers from the surfactant loss and chromatographic separation that affect the chemical components' synergistic effect for enhanced oil recovery. In this paper, the chromatography separation effects linked to a new method of oil displacement mechanism based on the dispersed particle gel strengthened Alkali/Surfactant/Polymer as a novel combination flooding system was investigated. The addition of dispersed particle gel in the Alkali/Surfactant/Polymer combination flooding system could interleave in the system's network structure and increase the viscosity stability by strengthening the flooding system to improve the oil recovery capacity. The novel dispersed particle gel strengthened alkali/surfactant/polymer flooding systems have a high displacement efficiency and a better-swept volume capacity considering the oilfield requirement for the enhanced oil recovery process. The effects of polymer, surfactant, alkaline, and dispersed particle gel concentration on the combination flooding system were evaluated, furthermore the impact of external factors on the system such as salinity; aging time was described. The results showed that the effects of external factors aging time and salinity slightly affected the system's interfacial reduction capacity. The increase in interface elasticity produced significantly favorable effects on system stability. For the displacement mechanism, when the dispersed particle gel strengthened alkali/surfactant/polymer combination flooding system moved in a porous medium, the dispersed particle gel passed through the pore throat directly or by deformation depending on the system's pressure variation. Furthermore, the phase separation was formed due to the combined component's effects, resulting in the differential migration between the systems, which led to different degrees of chromatographic separation phenomenon to affect the displacement mechanism. As we can see in the micro visualization simulation experiment, the residual oil interacted with Alkali molecules and form the in-situ surfactant, which makes the remaining oil emulsified, as well the surfactant adsorbed by DPG particles, make the crude oil emulsified and get enhanced. The chromatography and micro visualization experiments results of the dispersed particle gel strengthened alkali/surfactant/polymer combination flooding system indicated a favorable application of the system in an enhanced oil recovery process.

Abstract:Surfactant flooding is a traditional method to enhance oil recovery. The surfactant flooding experiment based on glass etching model allows researchers to observe directly how the remaining oil is displaced by surfactant through microscope, so as to explore the mechanism of surfactant enhanced oil recovery. However, microscopic experiments mostly stay at the level of physical experiments, and the operation of physical experiments is too complex and cumbersome. This study is the first to combine surfactant flooding experiment with numerical simulation in glass etching model. Firstly, based on the real pore and throat structure of the real low permeability reservoir core, the glass etching model was developed, and the micro-oil-water displacement experiment was carried out. Through microscopic observation and analysis, combined with testing and image processing technology, the effect of water flooding was quantitatively investigated. Then the surfactant flooding was carried out. Three surfactants were used for displacement. It was found that residual oil in pore network was greatly reduced. The recovery factor has been greatly improved. Finally, numerical simulation of water flooding and surfactant flooding based on micro-physical experiment was carried out. The results of numerical simulation were compared with the experimental results. It is found that the recovery factor and the form of residual oil are basically the same. By analyzing the results of numerical simulation of oil recovery, it is found that the extent of surfactant enhancing oil recovery is different under different interfacial tension. The results showed that the surfactant with interfacial tension of 0.22 mN/m has the highest ability to enhance oil recovery. This work provides a reference for surfactant selection in oilfield development. It can select the best surfactant according to the factors of time, efficiency and cost.

Polyetheramine enhanced biosurfactant/biopolymer flooding for enhanced oil recovery

Abstract:The application of conventional alkali, surfactant and polymer in alkali/surfactant/polymer (ASP) flooding has exposed the inherent shortcomings of pollution and damage to reservoirs. Hence, finding new environmentally friendly alternatives is essential for the sustainable development of ASP flooding. In this paper, we proposed a novel ternary combination utilizing organic alkali polyetheramine, biosurfactant, and biopolymer as alternative chemical agents for ASP flooding. Specifically, the ASP system composed of polyetheramine D230, biosurfactant sophorolipid (SL) and biopolymer welan gum (WLG) exhibited excellent potential in improving oil recovery. The interfacial tension measurements proved that D230 could react with organic acids in crude oil to generate surface-active soaps, which cooperated with SL to reduce the oil–water interfacial tension to 10 −2 mN/m. The rheological measurements demonstrated that the addition of D230 could increase the viscosity of low concentration WLG solution, but this phenomenon gradually disappeared with the rise of WLG concentration. Even at higher WLG concentration, D230 only caused a slight decrease in system viscosity, which facilitated the improvement of sweep efficiency. Emulsification and contact angle measurements indicated that D230/SL blend had outstanding emulsifying ability and successfully altered the quartz surface from oil-wet to water-wet. Core flooding experiments and micromodel experiments showed that the D230/SL/WLG system significantly enhanced oil recovery by 22.66 %, which was attributed to the high viscosity, low interfacial tension, excellent wettability reversal and emulsifying abilities of the system. The economic benefit assessment indicated that this ASP system has the potential to be economic, rendering it profitable even during periods of low oil prices. Furthermore, the EC 50 value of 52,600 mg/L for D230/SL/WLG demonstrated its environmental friendliness.

Abstract:The high viscosity and poor fluidity of heavy oil challenge its extraction, leading to the widespread use of surfactant emulsification to reduce viscosity and enhance recovery. This study evaluated three surfactants—sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium oleate (SO), and APG0810—for their suitability and effectiveness in the X reservoir. The solution properties of these surfactants were analyzed and their micro-mechanisms investigated using MD calculations. The effects of surfactant concentration and additives on emulsification and viscosity reduction were elucidated. Ultimately, a system for emulsification and viscosity reduction was selected for physical simulation research. The experimental findings show that SO reduces interfacial tension from 52.4 mN/m to 0.0027 mN/m, transforming lipophilic surfaces into hydrophilic. MD analyses reveal SO's optimal interfacial properties, with the lowest interfacial energy of −6423.4 kcal/mol, maximum interfacial thickness of 2.56 nm, and minimal diffusion coefficient of 0.4087 Å 2 /ps at the oil-water interface. These findings align with experimental results, confirming SO's superior interfacial properties. Combining 0.3% SO with 0.5% n-pentanol results in a 98% viscosity reduction. The emulsion shows excellent stability, with no water separation in the first 30 min and only 8.3% after 2 h. Physical simulation results show that in high(low) permeability core displacement experiments, system flooding and subsequent water flooding can increase recovery rates by 15.39%(36.91%), indicating the system's potential for enhancing oil recovery in Reservoir X. The findings suggest that the implementation of this system not only boosts the crude oil recovery rate but also carries economic significance in the industry.

Abstract:The development of oil and gas resources in low-permeability reservoirs is being paid more and more attention. Moreover, oil and gas resources in low-permeability reservoirs are affluent, and the water cut of the medium permeability layer is so high that the injection capacity has decreased significantly. Therefore, it is of great importance to address the issues of injectability and enhance oil recovery in low-permeability reservoirs. Given the existing conditions of low permeability and high water cut in Daqing Oilfield, the synthesis of an in situ emulsified associative polymer (ISEPAM) is the focus of the research. The polymer was prepared by micellar polymerization, ensuring a molecular weight of 5 × 10 6 Dalton. A series of experiments were conducted to investigate its dissolution filtration property, viscosifying, emulsification, anti-adsorption, conductivity, and oil displacement capacity. The experimental results show that ISEPAM has more significant properties than the polymeric surfactant (HB) used in Daqing Oilfield. The ISEPAM solution has significant filterability (filter factor is 1.1), viscosifying (38.66 mPa·s), emulsification (the water evolution rate of ISEPAM was only 4.4% for 60 min at 90% water cut), and good anti-adsorption property (after five adsorptions, still has a viscosity retention rate of 65%) in a specific concentration (1000 mg/L) and the field water in Daqing Oilfield (salinity is 4996.3 mg/L). The reason for this is due to the presence of dynamic reversible networks in the ISEPAM solution, and there are no cationic functional groups on the polymer chain. The conductivity of ISEPAM was tested using a homogeneous square core with 48.1 mD permeability, and the results show that the viscosity retention rate of the effluent can reach 90% and excellent injection property can be achieved. In the oil displacement test, ISEPAM presents excellent sweep efficiency and enhanced oil recovery by about 25% under 50 mD permeability. Under low permeability conditions, the ISEPAM exhibits better injectability and excellent oil displacement capacity. The related findings can provide an important idea and reference for the design and development of EOR polymers in the reservoirs with low permeability or high water cut.

Abstract:Following the application of polymer flooding in Daqing Oilfield, the heterogeneity between different layers has intensified, resulting in the formation of more favorable seepage channels and cross-flow of displacement fluids. Consequently, the circulation efficiency has decreased, necessitating the exploration of methods to enhance oil recovery. This paper focuses on experimental research utilizing a newly developed precrosslinked particle gel (PPG) combined with alkali surfactant polymer (ASP) to create a heterogeneous composite system. This study aims to improve the efficiency of heterogeneous system flooding after polymer flooding. The addition of PPG particles enhances the viscoelasticity of the ASP system, reduces the interfacial tension between the heterogeneous system and crude oil, and provides excellent stability. The heterogeneous system has high resistance and residual resistance coefficients during the migration process in a long core model, achieving an improvement rate of up to 90.1% under the permeability ratio of 9 between high and low permeability layers. Employing heterogeneous system flooding after polymer flooding can increase oil recovery by 14.6%. Furthermore, the oil recovery rate of low permeability layers can reach 28.6%. The experimental results confirm that the application of PPG/ASP heterogeneous flooding after polymer flooding can effectively plug high-flow seepage channels and improve oil washing efficiency. These findings hold significant implications for further reservoir development after polymer flooding.

Experimental investigation on the effect of interfacial properties of chemical flooding for enhanced heavy oil recovery

Abstract:Chemical compound flooding has demonstrated its efficacy in enhancing light oil recovery through ultra-low interfacial tension (IFT). However, the optimization of chemical systems properties for displacing heavy oil has not been clarified. This research aims to address this problem by designing common polymer and three surfactant-polymer (SP) systems with varying IFT and interfacial viscoelasticity behaviors, and comparing their ability to recover heavy oil. The findings of core flooding tests indicate that the system with low IFT and high interfacial viscoelasticity simultaneously has a better displacement efficiency for heavy oil than other flood systems, which could enhance heavy oil recovery by 21.94%. Micro-model tests reveal the underlying mechanisms driving the enhanced macro-scale oil recovery. The emulsion formation and interface expansion facilitated by low IFT, as well as increased emulsion stability and reduced snap-off of oil droplets due to the presence of an elastic oil-water interfacial film. These phenomena is more capable of driving microscopic heterogeneous remaining oil and film remaining oil than other solution. The comparative experiment analysis shows that the difference in chemical flooding between heavy oil and light oil is caused by the discrepant distributions of surfactants at the oil-water interface. The light oil interface is a monolayer surfactant molecular film, the heavy components and surfactant moleculars exhibit both competitive and cooperative adsorption phenomena at the oil-water interface. The occurrence of viscosity reduction and increased emulsion stability are more influential factors in the process of heavy oil displacement than those of conventional ultra-low IFT systems used for light oil recovery.

Abstract:The application of spontaneous emulsification method during oil displacement provides a low-cost and environmentally friendly approach to enhance oil recovery for unconventional reservoirs. A surfactant-polymer mixture system composed of hydrophobically modified polyvinyl alcohol (HPVA) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with the ability of spontaneous emulsification was constructed. The optimum formulation of HPVA/CTAB compound system was selected based on the spontaneous emulsification capability and emulsion stability. It is found that the system showed best spontaneous emulsification performance with the concentration of 3000 mg/L and the mass ratio of 7:3 (HPVA:CTAB). The dynamic interfacial tension between oil and water reached ultra-low level to promote oil dispersing into water spontaneously, then rose back to low level to keep the emulsion stable. The synergistic effect of compound system enhanced the intermolecular attraction between HPVA molecule and CTAB molecule, which lead to a tighter interfacial film to maintain a better stability of emulsions. For low permeability cores, displacement tests showed an additional oil recovery of 12.4% by the injection of spontaneous emulsification system. These remarkable performances enable this system an ideal candidate for oil recovery enhancement.
