Abstract:Na 2 CO 3 was used together with surfactant and polymer to form the Alkaline/Surfactant/Polymer (ASP) flooding system. Interfacial tension (IFT) and emulsification of Dagang oil and chemical solutions were studied in the paper. The experiment results show that the ASP system can form super-low interfacial tension with crude oil and emulsified phase. The stability of the emulsion is enhanced by the Na 2 CO 3 , surfactant, and the soap generated at oil/water contact. Six core flooding experiments are conducted in order to investigate the influence of Na 2 CO 3 concentration on oil recovery. The results show the maximum oil recovery can be obtained with 0.3 wt% surfactant, 0.6 wt% Na 2 CO 3 , and 2000 mg/L polymer. In a heterogeneous reservoir, the ASP flooding could not enhance the oil recovery by reducing IFT until it reaches the critical viscosity, which indicates expanding the sweep volume is the premise for reducing IFT to enhance oil recovery. Reducing or removing the alkali from ASP system to achieve high viscosity will reduce oil recovery because of the declination of oil displacement efficiency. Weak base ASP alkali can ensure that the whole system with sufficient viscosity can start the medium and low permeability layers and enhance oil recovery even if the IFT only reaches 10 −2 mN/m.

Abstract:The application of conventional alkali, surfactant and polymer in alkali/surfactant/polymer (ASP) flooding has exposed the inherent shortcomings of pollution and damage to reservoirs. Hence, finding new environmentally friendly alternatives is essential for the sustainable development of ASP flooding. In this paper, we proposed a novel ternary combination utilizing organic alkali polyetheramine, biosurfactant, and biopolymer as alternative chemical agents for ASP flooding. Specifically, the ASP system composed of polyetheramine D230, biosurfactant sophorolipid (SL) and biopolymer welan gum (WLG) exhibited excellent potential in improving oil recovery. The interfacial tension measurements proved that D230 could react with organic acids in crude oil to generate surface-active soaps, which cooperated with SL to reduce the oil–water interfacial tension to 10 −2 mN/m. The rheological measurements demonstrated that the addition of D230 could increase the viscosity of low concentration WLG solution, but this phenomenon gradually disappeared with the rise of WLG concentration. Even at higher WLG concentration, D230 only caused a slight decrease in system viscosity, which facilitated the improvement of sweep efficiency. Emulsification and contact angle measurements indicated that D230/SL blend had outstanding emulsifying ability and successfully altered the quartz surface from oil-wet to water-wet. Core flooding experiments and micromodel experiments showed that the D230/SL/WLG system significantly enhanced oil recovery by 22.66 %, which was attributed to the high viscosity, low interfacial tension, excellent wettability reversal and emulsifying abilities of the system. The economic benefit assessment indicated that this ASP system has the potential to be economic, rendering it profitable even during periods of low oil prices. Furthermore, the EC 50 value of 52,600 mg/L for D230/SL/WLG demonstrated its environmental friendliness.

Abstract:For over four decades, carbon dioxide (CO2) has been instrumental in enhancing oil extraction through advanced recovery techniques. One such method, water alternating gas (WAG) injection, while effective, grapples with limitations like gas channeling and gravity segregation. To tackle the aforementioned issues, this paper proposes an upgrade coupling method named alkaline-surfactant-polymer alternating gas (ASPAG). ASP flooding and CO2 are injected alternately into the reservoir to enhance the recovery of the WAG process. The uniqueness of this method lies in the fact that polymers could help profile modification, CO2 would miscible mix with oil, and alkaline surfactant would reduce oil–water interfacial tension (IFT). To analyze the feasibility of ASPAG, a couples model considering both gas flooding and ASP flooding processes is established by using the CMG-STARS (Version 2021) to study the performance of ASPAG and compare the recovery among ASPAG, WAG, and ASP flooding. Our research delved into the ASPAG's adaptability across reservoirs varying in average permeability, interlayer heterogeneity, formation rhythmicity, and fluid properties. Key findings include that ASPAG surpasses the conventional WAG in sweep and displacement efficiency, elevating oil recovery by 12–17%, and in comparison to ASP, ASPAG bolsters displacement efficiency, leading to a 9–11% increase in oil recovery. The primary flooding mechanism of ASPAG stems from the ASP slug's ability to diminish the interfacial tension, enhancing the oil and water mobility ratio, which is particularly efficient in medium-high permeability layers. Through sensitivity analysis, ASPAG is best suited for mid-high-permeability reservoirs characterized by low crude oil viscosity and a composite reverse sedimentary rhythm. This study offers invaluable insights into the underlying mechanisms and critical parameters that influence the alkaline-surfactant-polymer alternating gas method's success for enhanced oil recovery. Furthermore, it unveils an innovative strategy to boost oil recovery in medium-to-high-permeability reservoirs.

Lessons Learned From Alkali/Surfactant/Polymer-Flooding Field Tests in China

Abstract:Although the alkali/surfactant/polymer (ASP) flooding technique used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) was put forward many years ago, it was not until 2014 that it was first put into practice in industrial applications with hundreds of injectors and producers in the Daqing Oil Field in China. In this study, 30 ASP-flooding field tests in China were reviewed to promote the better use of this promising technology. Up to the present, ASP flooding in the Daqing Oil Field deserves the most attention. Alkali type does affect the ASP-flooding effect. Strong alkali [using sodium hydroxide (NaOH)] ASP flooding (SASP) was given more emphasis than weak alkali [using sodium carbonate (Na2CO3)] ASP flooding (WASP) for a long time in the Daqing Oil Field because of the lower interfacial tension (IFT) of the surfactant and the higher recovery associated with NaOH than with Na2CO3. Other ASP-flooding field tests completed in China all used Na2CO3. With progress in surfactant production, a recent large-scale WASP field test in the Daqing Oil Field produced an incremental oil recovery nearly 30% higher than most previous SASP recoveries and close to the value of the most-successful SASP test. However, the most-successful SASP test was partly attributed to the weak alkali factor. Recent studies have shown that the WASP incremental oil recovery factor could be as good as that of SASP but with much-better economic benefits. Screening of surfactant by IFT test is very important in the ASP-flooding practice in China. Whether dynamic or equilibrium IFT should be selected as criteria in surfactant screening is still in dispute. Many believe the equilibrium IFT is more important than the dynamic IFT in terms of the displacement efficiency; thus, it is better to choose a lower dynamic IFT when the equilibrium IFT meets the 10−3 order-of-magnitude requirement. However, it is impossible for many surfactants to form ultralow equilibrium IFT. Because of the low acid value of the Daqing crude oil, the asphaltene and resin components play a very important role in reducing the oil/water IFT and asphaltene is believed to be more influential, although more work is required to resolve this controversial issue. Whether polymer viscoelasticity can reduce the residual oil saturation is still a matter of debate. Advances in surfactant production and in the overcoming of scaling and produced-fluid-handling challenges form the foundation of the industrial application of ASP flooding. Further work is advised on the emulsification effect of ASP flooding. According to one field test, the EOR routine should be selected depending on consideration of the residual oil type to decide whether to increase the sweep volume and/or displacement efficiency. The micellar flooding failure in one ASP field test in China has led all subsequent field tests in China to choose the “low concentration, large slug” technical route instead of the “high concentration, small slug” one. ASP flooding can increase oil recovery by 30% at a cost of less than USD 30/bbl; thus, this technique can be used in response to low-oil-price challenges.

Abstract:Following the application of polymer flooding in Daqing Oilfield, the heterogeneity between different layers has intensified, resulting in the formation of more favorable seepage channels and cross-flow of displacement fluids. Consequently, the circulation efficiency has decreased, necessitating the exploration of methods to enhance oil recovery. This paper focuses on experimental research utilizing a newly developed precrosslinked particle gel (PPG) combined with alkali surfactant polymer (ASP) to create a heterogeneous composite system. This study aims to improve the efficiency of heterogeneous system flooding after polymer flooding. The addition of PPG particles enhances the viscoelasticity of the ASP system, reduces the interfacial tension between the heterogeneous system and crude oil, and provides excellent stability. The heterogeneous system has high resistance and residual resistance coefficients during the migration process in a long core model, achieving an improvement rate of up to 90.1% under the permeability ratio of 9 between high and low permeability layers. Employing heterogeneous system flooding after polymer flooding can increase oil recovery by 14.6%. Furthermore, the oil recovery rate of low permeability layers can reach 28.6%. The experimental results confirm that the application of PPG/ASP heterogeneous flooding after polymer flooding can effectively plug high-flow seepage channels and improve oil washing efficiency. These findings hold significant implications for further reservoir development after polymer flooding.

Abstract:Weak base alkali-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding technology has been applied in Daqing oilfield to enhance oil recovery. The effects of ASP on the characteristics of oil droplets in produced liquid were investigated. Surfactant can decrease interfacial tension (IFT) and zeta potential, making main contribution to the stability of oil droplets. Weak alkali (Na2CO3) can decrease IFT and polymer can decrease zeta potential, resulting in stable oil droplets in produced liquid. The produced liquid from weak base ASP flooding is easier to treat than that from strong base ASP flooding. A mixed demulsifier GFD410-8 was prepared and used to enhance oil–water separation in produced liquid. When the demulsifier dose of 50mg/kg was used to demulsify the simulated produced liquid with the concentrations of alkali 2000mg/kg, surfactant 600mg/kg and polymer 600mg/kg, water volume and water content after 30min settling were less than 30% and 1000mg/L, respectively. The demulsifier also greatly decreased water content in oil phase and oil concentration in water phase for actual produced liquid from oil well. The demulsification mechanism was also investigated in terms of IFT and zeta potential.

Abstract:In recent years, a newly developed dispersed particle gel (DPG) has attracted significant attention because of its excellent properties and a good application prospect in an enhanced oil recovery process. The preparation method is convenient and easy to scale up for the field application. The dispersed particle gel with sizes ranging from submicron to micron can block the high permeability layers by accumulating in large pore spaces or directly plugging small pore throats. Furthermore, the dispersed particle gels can achieve in-depth profile control due to the elastic deformation and migration into the reservoir's porous media. These characteristics have demonstrated great potential for the dispersed particle gels to strengthen the alkali/surfactant/polymer combination flooding system. The polymers used are the principal sources of viscosity in the system; the surfactant and alkaline produce the synergistic effect by generating the ultralow oil-water interfacial tension. The added dispersed particle gel has a synergistic viscosity increase effect, temperature tolerance, and thermal stability. However, the combined flooding system suffers from the surfactant loss and chromatographic separation that affect the chemical components' synergistic effect for enhanced oil recovery. In this paper, the chromatography separation effects linked to a new method of oil displacement mechanism based on the dispersed particle gel strengthened Alkali/Surfactant/Polymer as a novel combination flooding system was investigated. The addition of dispersed particle gel in the Alkali/Surfactant/Polymer combination flooding system could interleave in the system's network structure and increase the viscosity stability by strengthening the flooding system to improve the oil recovery capacity. The novel dispersed particle gel strengthened alkali/surfactant/polymer flooding systems have a high displacement efficiency and a better-swept volume capacity considering the oilfield requirement for the enhanced oil recovery process. The effects of polymer, surfactant, alkaline, and dispersed particle gel concentration on the combination flooding system were evaluated, furthermore the impact of external factors on the system such as salinity; aging time was described. The results showed that the effects of external factors aging time and salinity slightly affected the system's interfacial reduction capacity. The increase in interface elasticity produced significantly favorable effects on system stability. For the displacement mechanism, when the dispersed particle gel strengthened alkali/surfactant/polymer combination flooding system moved in a porous medium, the dispersed particle gel passed through the pore throat directly or by deformation depending on the system's pressure variation. Furthermore, the phase separation was formed due to the combined component's effects, resulting in the differential migration between the systems, which led to different degrees of chromatographic separation phenomenon to affect the displacement mechanism. As we can see in the micro visualization simulation experiment, the residual oil interacted with Alkali molecules and form the in-situ surfactant, which makes the remaining oil emulsified, as well the surfactant adsorbed by DPG particles, make the crude oil emulsified and get enhanced. The chromatography and micro visualization experiments results of the dispersed particle gel strengthened alkali/surfactant/polymer combination flooding system indicated a favorable application of the system in an enhanced oil recovery process.

Abstract:Abstract Heterogeneity is a significant feature of the reservoirs after polymer flooding, resulting in challenges for further enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in heterogeneous reservoirs. In order to further improve oil recovery in the reservoirs after polymer flooding, a novel EOR system (ASP-PPG composite system) was developed using preformed particle gel (PPG) and alkali-surfactant-polymer system (ASP system). We designed an oil saturation monitoring device and a large-scale 3D heterogeneous physical model to evaluate the performance of the system. The performance of the system and the ASP system were tested. Based on the testing results, the fluid migration patterns and enhanced oil recovery mechanisms of the ASP-PPG system in an actual heterogeneous reservoir were investigated using the oil saturation monitoring device and the 3D physical model. Experimental results indicate that the ASP-PPG system has a higher viscosity and better profile control ability than the ASP system. Additionally, the interfacial tension can be maintained at a low level, around 10−3 mN/m. Flooding experiments using the three-dimensional heterogeneous physical model demonstrated the excellent elastic deformation ability of PPG, which can dynamically block the large pores that formed after the polymer flooding and effectively improve the heterogeneity of reservoirs. After injecting the ASP-PPG system, the recovery factor of the model increased by 15.8%. Specifically, the sweep coefficient of high, medium, and low permeability layers increased by 4.36%, 19.6%, and 37.55%, respectively. Moreover, the oil displacement efficiency increased by 7.4%, 14.4%, and 17.9%, respectively. These results highlight the synergistic effect of combining PPG and ASP systems, significantly enhancing heterogeneous reservoir recovery after polymer flooding.

Abstract:Polymers and Polymer Composites, Volume 30, Issue , January-December 2022. With the depletion of conventional resources, it is necessary to enhance the recovery of remaining oil. The tertiary oil recovery chemical flooding is the most promising for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The use of alkali in chemical flooding produces fouling with the formation, which brings new challenges to chemical flooding EOR. So, alkali-free surfactant-polymer (SP) flooding is used as a new solution for EOR. The polymer makes the displacing fluid have a high viscosity and increases the swept volume. The surfactant can decrease the interfacial tension and emulsify the crude oil while the displacing fluid reaches the corresponding area. The synergistic effect of the two is more conducive to the recovery of the remaining oil. As a result, SP flooding is a more practical approach to enhance oilfield EOR. The research status of several surfactant and polymer types for EOR is reported in this work. According to the study, complex and anionic surfactants are better for EOR. For difficult formations, SP flooding is more suited because of the presence of polymers. Additionally, study analysis demonstrates that SP flooding and alternative polymer injection, when employed at the same cost, can enhance EOR and assist in resolving issues brought on by low oil prices.

Abstract:Abstract Chemical flooding technique of alkali-surfactant-polymer (ASP) has been successfully applied in China for sandstone reservoir. However, challenges to develop chemical EOR formulations without alkali are significant and unique for both sandstone and carbonate reservoir. On the one hand, it is very difficult to achieve ultra-low interfacial tension and good oil displacement effect without the help of alkali. On the other hand, the oil types, rock mineral compositions, rock surface property, matrix pore structure and orientation are all different for sandstone and carbonate reservoir. In fact, the ASP technologies successfully used in Daqing sandstone oilfield cannot be simply extrapolated to SP combination flooding and carbonate reservoir. The key technology is development low cost and high efficiency surfactant and polymer. In this paper, the new surfactant/polymer formulation has been developed, and show good properties for both sandstone and carbonate reservoir. The novel sulfobetaine with intellectual property has been obtained with raw material of cheap fatty acid, and the carbon-carbon double bond can improve the solubility and emulsifying property.The star-shaped polymer has been developed, and could effectively increase the rigidity of polymer molecular chain and the regularity of molecular structure, which can make the curliness of polymer chain become difficult, and increase the revolving hydraulic radius of molecular chain.The new surfactant/polymer formulation had wide adaptability and could achieve ultra-low interfacial tension (IFT, less than 1.0×10−2mN/m) in different sandstone and carbonate reservoir conditions, and the temperature were from 45 ℃ to 90℃, and the salinity were from 4,500 mg/L to 100,000 mg/L.The SP system has good long term stability at different reservoir conditions. The IFT results were in the range from 10−4mN/m to 10−3mN/m with duration of 180 days, and the retention rates of viscosity were more than 90%.The new surfactant/polymer formulation had good emulsifying capacity, and emulsion Winsor III was observed. It could change the wettability from oil wet to water wet, and had good stripping film capacity.The alkali-free SP formulation showed good oil displacement effect. After water flooding, it could increase oil recovery 21.5% (OOIP) in Daqing oilfield in China for sandstone reservoir; for carbonate reservoir, it could increase oil recovery 23.42% (OOIP) in the oilfield of Middle East. This paper presents the new alkali-free surfactant/polymer combination flooding green technology, which provide promising chemical EOR technique for both sandstone and carbonate reservoir.
Effects of alkaline/surfactant/polymer on stability of oil droplets in produced water from ASP flooding

Abstract:Alkaline/surfactant/polymer (ASP) flooding technology has been used successfully in the Daqing oilfield, but the produced water is more difficult to treat than that from water flooding and polymer flooding. Simulation experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of ASP on the stability of oil droplets in the produced water. Settling experimental results showed that polymer favored oil–water separation when its concentration was less than 1000 mg l−1. Oil concentrations in the water after settling separation increased with the increase of surfactant concentration, and increased with the increase of NaOH concentration up to 200 mg l−1 and then decreased with the further increase of alkaline concentrations. The interfacial properties of oil–water were investigated to find the mechanisms for the stability of oil droplets in produced water from ASP flooding. The synergetic action of surfactant ORS-41 and NaOH was found to greatly influence the interfacial tension of oil and water. ORS-41 and polymer can increase the density of negative electrical charges on the surface of oil droplets and the interfacial elasticity of oil and water. Alkaline however can increase the density of negative electrical charges of oil droplets and the interfacial elasticity of oil and water in lower alkaline concentrations, but the effect is reversed in higher alkaline concentrations. On the other hand, the flocculating ability of the polymer also helps small oil droplets coalesce and form big ones. The flocs of oil droplets were found in produced water from ASP flooding with a microscope.

Abstract:Chemical flooding plays an important role in enhancing oil recovery due to many reasons, including the viscosity-increment effect of polymer, wettability alteration effect of surfactant, and the formation of emulsions, which have been known to effectively increase the swept area and oil displacement efficiency, hence increasing heavy oil recovery. Laboratory tests and pilot trials of alkali–surfactant–polymer (ASP) injection show that the oil recovery of the emulsified system is 5% more than the cases where no emulsions existed. Therefore, it is of great significance to study heavy oil emulsions and its field application for enhanced heavy oil recovery. This paper discusses a thorough overview of the most fundamental ASP flooding mechanisms, along with some examples of laboratory experiments and field trials. In addition, the formation conditions and the interfacial characteristics of heavy oil emulsions are also discussed, mainly ASP flooding, and then the seepage mechanisms of these emulsions are investigated. The relationship between the formation of heavy oil emulsions and the enhanced heavy oil recovery effect by chemical flooding is discussed through core flooding experiments at the reservoir temperature and some field pilots to reach the optimum heavy oil recovery.

Abstract:In recent years, field test and industrialized application of ASP (alkaline/surfactant/polymer) flooding has been carried out in oilfields, which has obtained an obvious effect on increasing oil and decreasing water and good economic efficiency. However, due to the large proportion of alkali in the ASP flooding system, there are problems such as severe scaling and high cost during field tests, which restrict the promotion of ASP flooding. In order to reduce the amount of alkali used, achieve the goal of reducing scaling and costs, and meanwhile improve emulsification performance while maintaining interfacial activity, a multicomponent emulsion flooding system was developed by combining emulsifier HEFR2 with petroleum sulfonate and sacrificial agent LSCP1 with NaOH.Through laboratory experiments, the water extraction rate, particle diameter, Tsi value, and interfacial activity of the multicomponent emulsion flooding system were tested under different conditions. The results show that when the mass ratio of petroleum sulfonate to emulsifier HEFR2 is between 3:1 and 5:1, and the mass ratio of sacrificial agent LSCP1 to NaOH is between 3:1 and 7:1, the multicomponent emulsion flooding system can maintain good emulsification stability and interfacial activity. The multicomponent emulsion flooding system significantly reduces the amount of alkali used, and the cost of chemical agents is 11% lower than that of the ASP flooding system. At the same time, it achieves the goal of improving the stability of emulsifiers, maintains interfacial activity and reduces costs. This technology has broad application prospects.

Abstract:The issue of pipeline scaling and oil-water separation caused by treating produced water in Alkali/Surfactant/Polymer (ASP) flooding greatly limits the wide use of ASP flooding technology. Therefore, this study of the demulsification-flocculation mechanism of oil-water emulsion in ASP flooding produced water is of great importance for ASP produced water treatment and its application. In this paper, the demulsification-flocculation mechanism of produced water is studied by simulating the changes in oil-water interfacial tension, Zeta potential and the size of oil droplets of produced water with an added demulsifier or flocculent by laboratory experiments. The results show that the demulsifier molecules can be adsorbed onto the oil droplets and replace the surfactant absorbed on the surface of oil droplets, reducing interfacial tension and weakening interfacial film strength, resulting in decreased stability of the oil droplets. The demulsifier can also neutralize the negative charge on the surface of oil droplets and reduce the electrostatic repulsion between them which will be beneficial for the accumulation of oil droplets. The flocculent after demulsification of oil droplets by charge neutralization, adsorption bridging, and sweeping all functions together. Thus, the oil droplets form aggregates and the synthetic action by the demulsifier and the flocculent causes the oil drop film to break up and oil droplet coalescence occurs to separate oil water.

Abstract:Chemical compound flooding has demonstrated its efficacy in enhancing light oil recovery through ultra-low interfacial tension (IFT). However, the optimization of chemical systems properties for displacing heavy oil has not been clarified. This research aims to address this problem by designing common polymer and three surfactant-polymer (SP) systems with varying IFT and interfacial viscoelasticity behaviors, and comparing their ability to recover heavy oil. The findings of core flooding tests indicate that the system with low IFT and high interfacial viscoelasticity simultaneously has a better displacement efficiency for heavy oil than other flood systems, which could enhance heavy oil recovery by 21.94%. Micro-model tests reveal the underlying mechanisms driving the enhanced macro-scale oil recovery. The emulsion formation and interface expansion facilitated by low IFT, as well as increased emulsion stability and reduced snap-off of oil droplets due to the presence of an elastic oil-water interfacial film. These phenomena is more capable of driving microscopic heterogeneous remaining oil and film remaining oil than other solution. The comparative experiment analysis shows that the difference in chemical flooding between heavy oil and light oil is caused by the discrepant distributions of surfactants at the oil-water interface. The light oil interface is a monolayer surfactant molecular film, the heavy components and surfactant moleculars exhibit both competitive and cooperative adsorption phenomena at the oil-water interface. The occurrence of viscosity reduction and increased emulsion stability are more influential factors in the process of heavy oil displacement than those of conventional ultra-low IFT systems used for light oil recovery.

Abstract:It is well known that the recovery of water flooding from heavy oil reservoirs is less than 30% or even 20% of the OOIP (original oil in place), due to its very high viscosity and thus extremely low mobility comparing to light oil at reservoir condition. In order to improve residual oil recovery after water flooding in ordinary heavy oil reservoirs, this study presents an experimental study of nanoparticle and surfactant stabilized emulsion flooding to enhance heavy oil recovery. It is indicated in the emulsion stability and rheology studies that the synergistic interaction of nanoparticle with surfactant can significantly improve the emulsion stability and increase the apparent viscosity of emulsion. The results of core flooding tests show that the residual oil recovery after water flooding can be significantly improved by the nanoparticle-surfactant stabilized emulsions flooding. The incremental oil recovery gradually increases with the increase of injected emulsion volume, but there is an optimal economic value of the injected volume. The low injection rate is more effective than high injection rate, and the continuous injection pattern shows higher tertiary oil recovery as compared to cyclic injection pattern. The nanoparticle-surfactant stabilized emulsion flooding has a great potential for enhanced oil recovery in waterflooded heavy oil reservoirs, with the permeability ranging from 500 mD to 2000 mD and the crude oil viscosity being lower than 1000 mPa s. The two-dimensional homogeneous sandpack flooding test indicates that the nanoparticle-surfactant stabilized emulsion flooding can not only improve the sweep efficiency by blocking the high permeable water channels, but also can improve the displacement efficiency by mobilizing the trapped oil.

Abstract:Chemical flooding is a promising technique for enhanced heavy-oil recovery, especially for reservoirs where thermal methods are not feasible. This paper discusses results of a laboratory investigation, including sandpack flooding experiments and micromodel flooding studies, for assessing the suitability and effectiveness of alkaline flooding and alkaline–surfactant (AS) flooding for heavy-oil recovery. The sandpack flood results show that the tertiary oil recovery of AS flooding is lower than those of alkaline-only flooding, although the interfacial tension between the heavy oil and AS system can be reduced to be ultralow. The micromodel tests indicate that the mechanisms for enhanced oil recovery by alkaline flooding are the penetration of the alkaline solution into the crude oil and the subsequent formation of water-in-oil (W/O) droplet flow that tend to reduce the mobility of the water phase and damp viscous fingering, leading to the improvement of sweep efficiency. However, the formation of W/O droplet flow is inhibited with the addition of surfactant, and the viscous oil is easily emulsified into the water phase to form oil-in-water emulsions and then entrains along with the flowing aqueous phase. As a result, viscous fingering phenomena occur during the AS flooding, resulting in a relatively lower sweep efficiency.

Abstract:In this paper, in order to study the effect of emulsification on the oil displacement of the system, several polymer, surfactant/polymer (S/P) and alkali/surfactant/polymer (A/S/P) systems were prepared for experiments. Firstly, the interfacial tension of each system was investigated. After the emulsion was prepared, the droplet size was observed by microscope and the intensity of the backscattered light during the destabilisation process of the emulsion was tested with the stability analyser. The TSI value was calculated to evaluate the stability of the emulsion. Finally, the Berea core displacement experiment (chemicals are used to displace oil from the core) was carried out to test the ability to enhance the oil recovery. The experimental results show that the emulsion formed by the A/S/P system with the simulation oil has the best stability. The chemical displacement recovery is the highest, which is 32.15 %. The emulsion stability of the S/P system is second, and the chemical displacement recoveries are 17.03 % and 20.76 %, respectively. The polymer system has no interfacial activity, does not form an emulsion, and has the lowest chemical displacement recovery of 8.02 %. This shows that the deeper the degree of emulsification of the system and the more stable the emulsion, the better the oil displacement effect of the oil displacement system.

Abstract:Due to the low permeability, small pore throat, and poor pore connectivity of ultra-low permeability reservoirs, fracturing was required to improve the flow environment of oil in the reservoir during its development. The combination of fracturing and oil displacement could reduce the complexity of the development of ultra-low permeability reservoirs. It was feasible to synthesize new surfactants to prepare fracturing oil displacement agents, but the research and development of new surfactants were difficult and costly. This paper aimed to experimentally investigate the imbibition displacement mechanism of fracturing flooding by combining the surfactant of chemical flooding with the fracturing fluid. With the conditions of the ultra-low permeability reservoir in block Y of Changqing Oilfield, the mechanism of remaining oil start-up and fractured oil displacement agent enhanced oil recovery in the ultra-low permeability reservoir was studied by microfluidic model experiment and NMR experiment. A mixture of fracture oil displacement agents was obtained by mixing heavy alkyl benzene sulfonate surfactant, a nonionic surfactant, and a betaine-type amphoteric surfactant. HAS-6C, HAS-5E, and HAS-5G were selected for their interfacial tension reaching 10−3 mN/m. Oil–water interfacial tension of HAS-5E was the lowest, which can be reduced to 10−4 mN/m. The ability to alter the wettability of HAS-6C was the most significant, which could make the contact angle go down to 64.5°. The multi-round dynamic and static imbibition experiments showed that the combination of selected surfactant and slickwater can greatly improve the imbibition recovery, of which HAS-6C could enhance oil recovery by 17%. The HAS-5E system with the lowest interfacial tension had the best effect of starting clustered residual oil, and the clustered residual oil saturation was reduced by 48.8%. The HAS-6C system with stronger wettability had the best effect of starting throat-like residual oil, and the throat-like residual saturation was reduced by 10.8%.
