Abstract:The heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction is an effective technique in combating organic contaminants for both soil and water remediation, and extensive studies have focused on enhancing its efficiency and reducing its costs. In this work, we developed novel photo-Fenton catalysts by simply milling commercially available TiO2 (P25) with Schwertmannite (Sh), a natural iron-oxyhydroxysulfate nanomineral. We expect that the photo-generated electrons from TiO2 could continuously migrate to Sh, which then could enhance the separation of electron-hole pairs on TiO2 and accelerate the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) on Sh, leading to high degradation efficiency of the target organic contaminants. SEM and TEM results showed the distribution of TiO2 on Sh surface for the nanocomposites (TiO2/Sh). Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the much higher content of Fe(II) was determined on TiO2/Sh than on Sh via a common method in the iron ore, and the consumption of H2O2 and the production of •OH were more significant in the TiO2/Sh system than those in the TiO2 and Sh systems. These results well support our hypothesis that the photo-generated electrons could migrate from TiO2 to Sh on the composites, and can also explain the much higher degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B (RhB) in the TiO2/Sh system. Besides, TiO2/Sh had lower Fe dissolution as compared with Sh, and retained high catalytic stability after four repeated cycles. Above merits of the TiO2/Sh composites, in combining with their simple synthesis method and low-cost property, indicated that they should have promising applications as heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts.

Abstract:The results obtained indicate that the catalysts synthesized: They were alginate-ferric clay and alginate-Fe, both were obtained by the casting method and their ability to decolorize the red dye 6 was evaluated. The materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and elemental analysis by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and a bioassay on Elongation of Lactuca sativa root was performed to verify the toxicity of the dye. In order to observer the effect that the availability of iron has on the efficiency of the process the Fe-alginate was compared with iron clay (iron-conditioned bentonite). The results indicate that the alginate film with iron clay presents a higher efficiency under UV light, with a discoloration percentage of 79%. On the other hand, under solar radiation, the alginate film with Fe showed a higher percentage of discoloration than 98%. The adsorption kinetics of the materials are best described by a first-order reaction, which provides important information about the behavior of the catalyst during the degradation process. Toxicity tests indicate that Lactuca sativa root growth is affected by iron residues and hydrogen peroxide in aqueous solutions.Graphical abstract Toxicity Bioassay Diagram

Abstract:A novel micro-mesopores composite material has successfully been synthesized at basic hydrothermal conditions using natural mineral montmorillonite (MMT) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Two surfactants, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), have been employed in order to shape the pores in the composite. The resultant silica–clay has large surface area (472m2/g) and high hydrothermal stability, which makes it a potentially host-material for catalyst. The molecular size of different surfactant leads to the multi-peak distribution of pore size, and the surfactant of larger size (PEG) corresponds to the formation of larger pores. Moreover, the photocatalytic results show that, comparing with pure TiO2 particles, the loaded TiO2 on such silica–clay shows higher photodegradation rate of methyl orange (MO) in aqueous. And another porous aluminosilicate host, zeolite, was also discussed for comparison.

Abstract:Novel heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst, iron coated Faujasite zeolite (Fe-FAU) was synthesized by exchange-calcination method. Iron was exchanged in zeolite support based on Faujasite type zeolites prepared in laboratory from instratified illitic-kaolinite raw Tunisian clay. The studied materials were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM–EDX and FTIR methods. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the zeolite structure was not affected by the catalyst preparation method. BET results revealed that Fe-FAU possess a trimodal structure (micro, meso and macropores) with a porosity of 0.28 cm 3 /g. The catalytic performance of the Fe-FAU was studied for the oxidation of methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solution in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The effects of different operating parameters on the degradation efficiency were studied at atmospheric pressure. The results indicated that the Fe doped zeolite exhibited good degradation efficiency. Measurements of the mineralization of MO by TOC analysis showed that the maximum degradation of MO (94%) was detected with 50 mg of adsorbent dosage after 20 min of contact time and under UVC irradiation. Moreover, in order to predict the empirical variables significance, the variances analysis "ANOVA" was used. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) incorporating Central Composite Design (CCD) of experiments was applied to optimize oxidation parameters. High regression (R 2 = 0.95) and the low probability (p value < 0.0001) values signify the validity of the quadratic model to predict the removal (%) of MO.

Abstract:Ozone has been successfully employed in water treatment due to its ability to oxidize a wide variety of refractory compounds. In order to increase the process efficiency and optimize its economy, the implementation of heterogeneous catalysts has been encouraged. In this context, the use of cheap and widely available natural materials is a promising option that would promote the utilization of ozone in a cost-effective water treatment process. This review describes the use of natural clays, zeolites and oxides as supports or active catalysts in the ozonation process, with emphasis on the structural characteristics and modifications performed in the raw natural materials; the catalytic oxidation mechanism; effect of the operating parameters and degradation efficiency outcomes. According to the information compiled, more research in realistic scenarios is needed (i.e., real wastewater matrix or continuous operation in pilot scale) in order to transfer this technology to the treatment of real wastewater streams.

Magnetite Nanoparticles as Solar Photo-Fenton Catalysts for the Degradation of the 5-Fluorouracil Cytostatic Drug

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysts based on magnetite nanoparticles, Fe3O4, were prepared by the chemical coprecipitation method using iron (III) chloride as a salt precursor. The physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles were determined by different techniques and the efficiency was evaluated for the degradation of the cytostatic drug, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), in aqueous solution by photo-Fenton process under simulated solar radiation. The most influential parameters, namely pH of the solution, catalyst load, H2O2 dosage, and use of radiation, were studied and optimized in the degradation process. The optimal conditions to achieve a 100% degradation of 5-FU (10 mg L-1) and a high mineralization degree (76%) were established at the acidic pH of 3.0, 100 mg L-1 of catalyst loading, and 58 mM of H2O2 under simulated solar radiation. The contribution of iron leaching to the catalyst deactivation, the role of the dissolved iron ions on homogenous reactions, and the stability of the catalyst were assessed during consecutive reaction cycles.

Abstract:Heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) using solid catalysts has emerged as a robust advanced oxidation process for wastewater treatment, capitalizing on the advantages of in-situ oxidant generation, minimal iron sludge production, and a wide pH working window. However, synthetic iron-based catalysts face great challenges in practical application due to their high cost and the risk of secondary pollution. In contrast, the use of natural minerals as catalysts has emerged as a promising alternative owing to their cost-effectiveness, abundance, and eco-friendliness natures. Herein, a of the application of natural iron and clay minerals in EF is provided, focusing on the performance, catalytic mechanisms, as well as challenges and perspectives for large-scale application.

Abstract:There has been an increased interest for the use of naturally available catalysts in Fenton oxidation procedures. Nevertheless, the potential of laterite soil for the removal of aqueous pollutants via Fenton based technique has not been exhaustively explored. The fluidized bed photo Fenton approach was used in this study to treat textile wastewater with the goal of reducing total organic carbon (TOC) in the wastewater. Thermally modified laterite soil was used as a catalyst in the photo-Fenton process. Several characterization techniques including X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS), were used to gain insight into the characteristics of a modified laterite catalyst. The application of a catalyst resulted in a significant reduction of the total organic carbon (TOC) present in the textile wastewater. Specifically, a TOC reduction of 83% was observed after a reaction period of 100 min, at pH 3, 10 mm of bed height, 30 mM of H 2 O 2 concentration, and a recirculating feed flow rate of 170 ml/min. Kinetic and hydrodynamic investigations were also carried out to have a better understanding of the catalytic processes occurring inside the fluidized-bed reactor. A first-order kinetics could potentially be used to explain the photo-degradation of textile effluent. After four successive oxidation cycles, laterite displayed enhanced catalytic stability and lower surface site deactivation. A cost-benefit analysis of the fluidized bed photo-Fenton technique for treating textile effluent was also performed. The fluidized-bed Fenton approach may be a feasible option for treating wastewater containing different colours because of its low operating costs and low environmental effect.

Abstract:TiO2/expanded graphite (TiO2/EG) composite films were applied to water treatment for sulfadiazine (SDZ) degradation in a continuous flat plate photochemical reactor. The films were synthesized by sol-gel method and deposited on borosilicate glass by airbrush spray coating technique, forming a TiO2/C heterojunction. Increasing the amount of carbon promoted more efficient photocatalytic removal of SDZ under simulated sunlight, which increased from 9.1% in the absence of carbon to 49.8% for the material containing 7.5% C. From the formation of the TiO2/C heterojunction, morphological modifications, changes in the electronic structure and reduction of the band gap energy were observed. Type-II heterojunction formation was observed. Foreground and background irradiation modes were investigated, and a possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. TiO2/7.5 %-EG exhibited the best photocatalytic performance, with the possibility of reuse. The films showed good reusability in the SDZ degradation over 4 photocatalytic cycles. The influence of irradiation modes and the role of oxidizing species were discussed. The results showed that TiO2/EG hybrid films are a promising alternative for practical photocatalytic applications under sunlight.
Reconstruction of Electronic Structure of MOF-525 via Metalloporphyrin for Enhanced Photoelectro-Fenton Process

Abstract:Photoelectro-Fenton (PEF) process can continuously promote the occurrence of Fenton reaction and the generation of active species, which is an advanced oxidation technology for pollutant degradation. However, the lack of bifunctional catalysts restricts the development of PEF technology. In this study, the electronic rearrangement MOF-525 modified by metalloporphyrin (named MOF-525-Fe/Zr) was prepared, to load on the carbon felt as a novel cathode catalyst, which is used in PEF process. A series of characterization and photoelectric chemical properties tests combined with DFT calculation showed that the modification of MOF-525 could not only have the large specific surface area and multistage pore structure but also co-stimulate the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and ligand-to-cluster charge transfer (LCCT) by photoelectric synergy. These charge transitions provide periodic electron donor-acceptor conduction paths in MOF-525-Fe/Zr, which can improve the active species formation and transfer efficiency. Owing to their favorable pore and electronic structure as well as stability, MOF-525-Fe/Zr shows great promise for the application in the catalytic process of PEF. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation was enhanced by MOF-525-Fe/Zr with the TOC removal rate above 75% both in river water and tap water. Finally, the reasonable pathway of PEF catalytic degradation of SMX was proposed by HPLC-MS analysis. In conclusion, this study provides a new idea for reconstructing the electronic structure of MOFs catalyst and broadening the practical application of PEF technology.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of modified hydroxyapatite nanoparticles, Ca10-xFex-yWy(PO4)6(OH)2, was applied for the degradation of methylene blue (MB), fast green FCF (FG) and norfloxacin (NOR). XPS analysis pointed to the successful partial replacement of Ca by Fe. Under photo-electro-Fenton process, the catalyst Ca4FeII1·92W0·08FeIII4(PO4)6(OH)2 was combined with UVC radiation and electrogenerated H2O2 in a Printex L6 carbon-based gas diffusion electrode. The application of only 10 mA cm-2 resulted in 100% discoloration of MB and FG dyes in 50 min of treatment at pH 2.5, 7.0 and 9.0. The proposed treatment mechanism yielded maximum TOC removal of ∼80% and high mineralization current efficiency of ∼64%. Complete degradation of NOR was obtained in 40 min, and high mineralization of ∼86% was recorded after 240 min of treatment. Responses obtained from LC-ESI-MS/MS are in line with the theoretical Fukui indices and the ECOSAR data. The study enabled us to predict the main degradation route and the acute and chronic toxicity of the by-products formed during the contaminants degradation.

Abstract:The present study aims to assess the capacity of natural acidified clay (Ht) and commercial clay (K10) to be used as catalyst supports for the degradation of an azo dye, i.e., Congo Red (CR), using three types of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), namely the heterogeneous Fenton process, the photocatalysis process, and the photo-Fenton process. The two supports were intercalated with iron species using different loadings. The reaction efficiency for each step of the synthesis was confirmed using the nitrogen gas adsorption–desorption method for measuring the surface area and pore volume, as well as the X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) technique. In addition, the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurements were used to determine the chemical compositions of both clays (Ht and K10).

Abstract:Nanostructured mesoporous materials of MCM-41 type were synthesized using a natural, non-toxic, and cheap source of silica from rice husk. Then, this pure silica was modified with several Fe loadings by a wet impregnation method. The chemical and physic properties of MCM-41 solids obtained were similar to those of MCM-41 synthesized from commercial silica by conventional method. Thus, all catalysts exhibited good structural regularity preserving the mesoporosity after the metal incorporation. The performance of the Fe/MCM-RHA composites as photo-Fenton heterogeneous catalysts was evaluated for photocatalytic degradation of different endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as herbicides (atrazine), and compounds derived from the plastic industry (bisphenol A) and the pharmaceutical industry (acetaminophen). The major photo-catalytic efficiency obtained (Fe/MCM-RHA(2.5)) is consistent with the highest presence of iron species, which are finely dispersed and stabilized on the silica structure, the isolated Fe3+ ions being the accessible and active sites for the reaction. Finally, a cheaper solid arising from the valorization of residual biomass and with excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of EDCs (above 99%, 75%, and 60% for BPA, ATZ, and ACE respectively, in a reaction time of 240 min) was obtained.

Abstract:Currently, the study of semiconductor materials is very promising for the photocatalytic remediation of hazardous organic substances present in the air and water. Various semiconductors have been investigated in this interesting photo-assisted methodology, among them metal oxides such as ZnO, TiO2 and their derivatives. In this study, ZnTiO3/TiO2 was synthesized by the sol-gel method using Ti(OC3H7)4 and Zn(CH3COO)2 · 2H2O as reagents. The role of several conditions such as synthesis temperature and TiO2:ZnO proportion on the morphology and purity of compounds obtained was studied, and the suitable conditions for the synthesis of photocatalysts were determined. Various techniques were used to conduct a systematic investigation on the structural, morphological, and photocatalytic properties of ZnTiO3/TiO2. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images show that ZnTiO3/TiO2 have a typical particle size of approximately 100 nm with a quasi-spherical shape. The adsorption and photocatalytic activity were investigated by the decolorization of Methylene Blue (MB) as an organic contaminant under UV irradiation both in TiO2 and ZnTiO3/TiO2 supported over some Ecuadorian clays. The materials evaluated were prepared in the shape of 0.2 cm (diameter) and 1.0 cm (length) cylindrical extrudates. The degradation percentage of MB obtained was 85% approximately after 150 min of irradiation. The results obtained allow us to conclude that these synthesized materials can be used as adsorbents and photocatalysts.
Heterogeneous UV-Fenton Catalytic Degradation of Dyestuff in Water with Hydroxyl-Fe Pillared Bentonite

Abstract:In recent years, much attention has been focused on developing heterogeneous catalyst for Fenton or photo-Fenton process to reuse the catalyst and avoid the possible pollution caused by the metal ions in the solution. Through cation exchange reaction, hydroxyl-Fe pillared bentonite (H-Fe-P-B) was successfully prepared as a solid catalyst for UV-Fenton process. Compared with raw bentonite, the content of iron, interlamellar distance and external surface area of H-Fe-P-B increased remarkably. Heterogeneous UV-Fenton catalytic degradation of azo-dye Acid Light Yellow G (ALYG) was investigated in aqueous using UVA (365nm) light as irradiation source. The effects of H2O2 concentration, catalyst dosage, initial pH and temperature on degradation of ALYG were studied in detail. The results demonstrated that the H-Fe-P-B had high catalytic activity. In optimal operation conditions, more than 98% discoloration and 65% TOC removal of 50mg/L ALYG could be achieved after 120min treatment. The iron leaching rates of H-Fe-P-B were all below 0.6% in multiple runs in the degradation of ALYG, which indicated that the heterogeneous catalyst had long-term stability and activity. Another advantage of this catalyst was its strong surface acidity, which made the range of pH for heterogeneous UV-Fenton system extended from 3.0 to 9.0. The results indicated that the H-Fe-P-B was a promising catalyst for heterogeneous UV-Fenton system.

Abstract:An innovative titanium-magnetite (Fe-Ti) catalyst was developed using a production strategy based on water-free solvents such as deep eutectic solvents (DES) for the removal of persistent pollutants. The prepared catalyst was applied in electro-Fenton and photo-electro-Fenton processes. To this end, a new cell design with electrodes based on conductive materials was developed using 3D printing in two different electrochemical cells configurations: vertical electrode configuration (VEC) and horizontal electrode configuration (HEC). The HEC showed good performance attaining a yield hydrogen peroxide production of 20 mg·L −1 and being able to operate in electro-Fenton degradation batch assays for the removal of the drugs (Antipyrine and Lissamine Green B). Then, the heterogeneous bimetallic catalyst (BC-FeTi) was tested and compared with the monometallic Fe catalyst (MC-Fe). The results with both catalysts showed a synergistic effect combining electrochemical oxidation and Fenton reaction, promoting the best removal of the target pollutants. Subsequently, the contribution of UV radiation was evaluated with BC-FeTi, achieving that more than 80 % of both pollutants were removed in 80 min by the photo-Fenton process, confirming the high affinity of oxidizing free radicals for high molecular weight organic molecules. Finally, the simultaneous application of electro- and photo-oxidation (photo-electro-Fenton) significantly improved the removal of the target contaminants from the aqueous solution, achieving complete removal in 50 and 80 min for Lissamine Green B and Antipyrine, respectively. The stability and reusability of BC-FeTi and 3D-printed electrodes were achieved in five successive working cycles, with negligible loss of activity compared to new catalysts, which achieved greater than 99 % removal after five consecutive runs. Leaching of iron and titanium from the catalyst evaluated throughout the cycles, was low, totalling 2.7 and 4.5 % at the end of the fifth cycle.

Abstract:Fenton-advanced oxidation process has a good effect on the degradation of toxic and harmful substances in industrial wastewater. However, homogeneous Fenton has the problems of serious iron sludge pollution and high catalyst cost in practical application. To search for a cheap, stable Fe-based catalyst with good performance has become an urgent task in the field of heterogeneous Fenton. Attapulgite is a natural clay mineral with a porous surface and special crystal structure, which is suitable for a catalyst carrier. In this study, the granulation conditions and Fe 3+ loading conditions of attapulgite were investigated, the effects of two preparation sequences on the degradation of Rhodamine-B were compared, and the best heterogeneous Fenton granular catalyst was selected. In the process of granulation, the adsorption and decolorization effects on Rhodamine-B of particles were the best when the additive dosage ratios were AlCl 3 1%, Fe 2 O 3 3%, and SiO 2 3% respectively. When impregnation concentration, temperature, time and ratio of liquid to solid were 1.6 mol/L, 80 °C, 4 h, and 20:1, respectively, the optimum Fe 3+ loading condition was obtained, and the method of granulating first had a better removal effect on dye. Subsequently, the structural characteristics, phase changes and iron distribution of attapulgite before and after loading Fe 3+ were characterized. In the process of exploring the optimal degradation conditions, the results showed that the degradation of dye remained above 98% after the catalyst was reused for 5 times, indicating that the catalyst can be a promising eco-friendly material for refractory wastewater treatment.
