Abstract:An innovative titanium-magnetite (Fe-Ti) catalyst was developed using a production strategy based on water-free solvents such as deep eutectic solvents (DES) for the removal of persistent pollutants. The prepared catalyst was applied in electro-Fenton and photo-electro-Fenton processes. To this end, a new cell design with electrodes based on conductive materials was developed using 3D printing in two different electrochemical cells configurations: vertical electrode configuration (VEC) and horizontal electrode configuration (HEC). The HEC showed good performance attaining a yield hydrogen peroxide production of 20 mg·L −1 and being able to operate in electro-Fenton degradation batch assays for the removal of the drugs (Antipyrine and Lissamine Green B). Then, the heterogeneous bimetallic catalyst (BC-FeTi) was tested and compared with the monometallic Fe catalyst (MC-Fe). The results with both catalysts showed a synergistic effect combining electrochemical oxidation and Fenton reaction, promoting the best removal of the target pollutants. Subsequently, the contribution of UV radiation was evaluated with BC-FeTi, achieving that more than 80 % of both pollutants were removed in 80 min by the photo-Fenton process, confirming the high affinity of oxidizing free radicals for high molecular weight organic molecules. Finally, the simultaneous application of electro- and photo-oxidation (photo-electro-Fenton) significantly improved the removal of the target contaminants from the aqueous solution, achieving complete removal in 50 and 80 min for Lissamine Green B and Antipyrine, respectively. The stability and reusability of BC-FeTi and 3D-printed electrodes were achieved in five successive working cycles, with negligible loss of activity compared to new catalysts, which achieved greater than 99 % removal after five consecutive runs. Leaching of iron and titanium from the catalyst evaluated throughout the cycles, was low, totalling 2.7 and 4.5 % at the end of the fifth cycle.

Abstract:The acid-activated Fe-SiO2 composites were synthesized using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the silica source, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the template and salts of Fe as the iron sources. After finishing the preparation, these samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy for the morphology of the catalysts, X-ray diffractometer for the dispersibility of Fe, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer for the surface groups. To investigate catalytic activities, various photo-Fenton reactions have been conducted to decontaminate the direct red 4BS simulated wastewater under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that the sample possessing its iron source from FeSO4 had better dispersibility, but lower activities and stability than that from Fe (NO3)3. At initial pH of 6.0, both FS/1 and FS/6 not only led to 100% decolorization of a solution containing 100 mg/L direct red, but also about 79% and 99% total organic carbon were removed in respective system after reaction for 120 min. The kinetics study showed that a model in combination of first order and second order reactions was suitable for this acid-catalyzed process. Analyses of solvent-leaching stability and iron leaching demonstrated these catalysts may have long-term stability.
Self-cycled Photocatalytic Fenton System and Rapid Degradation of Organic Pollutants over Magnetic 3D MnS Nanosheet/iron-Nickel Foam

Abstract:Photocatalytic self-Fenton systems by coupling photocatalysis and Fenton technology overcome the limitations of conventional Fenton reactions by in situ generation and activation of H2O2. However, a considerable amount of iron sludge is still produced. In this study, we developed a novel self-cycled photocatalytic Fenton process for the degradation of organic pollutants via an iron-nickel foam-supported MnS nanosheet (MnS/INF). Without the external addition of both H2O2 and ferrous ions, the MnS/INF 3D Z-scheme heterojunction exhibited an extremely high H2O2 production rate of 25.4 mM h-1 g-1 under visible light irradiation, which is 2-119 times higher than those of the reported photocatalytic self-Fenton systems in the literature. The photogenerated electrons of MnS/INF can participate in the Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle process to promote H2O2 activation, significantly enhancing the catalytic performance owing to the formation of a 3D Z-scheme heterojunction. DFT calculations indicate that MnS/INF can lower the energy barrier of *OOH formation and result in an enhanced photocatalytic activity of H2O2 production. Magnetic MnS/INF was easily recycled, remained very stable, and mitigated the extra undesirable Fe-containing sludge and only little iron sludge (0.43 mmol L-1) was produced after nine cycles of reuse. Furthermore, large (100 cm2) MnS/INF was used for an unassisted solar-driven in situ photocatalytic H2O2 production and rapid degradation of RhB with requirements of only water, oxygen and sunlight. In addition, MnS/INF also exhibited good performance in real wastewater containing fluoronitrobenzene from a factory (initial COD 2310 mg L-1) and wastewater from a sewage treatment station (initial COD 106 mg L-1). This work may provide leverage to minimize iron sludge from the Fenton reaction's source. The self-cycled photocatalytic Fenton system rapidly degrades organic pollutants containing real wastewater.
Engineering Iron Oxide Nanocatalysts by a Microwave-Assisted Polyol Method for the Magnetically Induced Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes constitute a promising alternative for the treatment of wastewater containing organic pollutants. Still, the lack of cost-effective processes has hampered the widespread use of these methodologies. Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles stand as a great alternative since they can be engineered by different reproducible and scalable methods. The present study consists of the synthesis of single-core and multicore magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles by the microwave-assisted polyol method and their use as self-heating catalysts for the degradation of an anionic (acid orange 8) and a cationic dye (methylene blue). Decolorization of these dyes was successfully improved by subjecting the catalyst to an alternating magnetic field (AMF, 16 kA/m, 200 kHz). The sudden temperature increase at the surface of the catalyst led to an intensification of 10% in the decolorization yields using 1 g/L of catalyst, 0.3 M H2O2 and 500 ppm of dye. Full decolorization was achieved at 90 °C, but iron leaching (40 ppm) was detected at this temperature leading to a homogeneous Fenton process. Multicore nanoparticles showed higher degradation rates and 100% efficiencies in four reusability cycles under the AMF. The improvement of this process with AMF is a step forward into more sustainable remediation techniques.

Towards High-Performance Photo-Fenton Degradation of Organic Pollutants with Magnetite-Silver Composites: Synthesis, Catalytic Reactions and In Situ Insights

Abstract:In this study, Fe3O4/Ag magnetite-silver (MSx) nanocomposites were investigated as catalysts for advanced oxidation processes by coupling the plasmonic effect of silver nanoparticles and the ferromagnetism of iron oxide species. A surfactant-free co-precipitation synthesis method yielded pure Fe3O4 magnetite and four types of MSx nanocomposites. Their characterisation included structural, compositional, morphological and optical analyses, revealing Fe3O4 magnetite and Ag silver phases with particle sizes ranging from 15 to 40 nm, increasing with the silver content. The heterostructures with silver reduced magnetite particle aggregation, as confirmed by dynamic light scattering. The UV-Vis spectra showed that the Fe:Ag ratio strongly influenced the absorbance, with a strong absorption band around 400 nm due to the silver phase. The oxidation kinetics of organic pollutants, monitored by in situ luminescence measurements using rhodamine B as a model system, demonstrated the higher performance of the developed catalysts with increasing Ag content. The specific surface area measurements highlighted the importance of active sites in the synergistic catalytic activity of Fe3O4/Ag nanocomposites in the photo-Fenton reaction. Finally, the straightforward fabrication of diverse Fe3O4/Ag heterostructures combining magnetism and plasmonic effects opens up promising possibilities for heterogeneous catalysis and environmental remediation.

Abstract:The effective management of low-concentration dye pollutants is a challenging task. Among various strategies, the Fenton reaction emerges as a powerful approach for the degradation of dyes, particularly in the presence of highly efficient catalysts. This study presents the utilization of antimony tungstate nests modified small magnetite nanospheres (Fe3O4/Sb2WO6) as a heterostructure catalyst for the photo-Fenton mineralization of low-concentration organic pollutants, exemplified by methylene Blue (MB) at ppm levels. The synthesis of Fe3O4/Sb2WO6 involves the in situ co-precipitation of agglomerated Fe3O4 nanospheres on hierarchial Sb2WO6 nests. The resulting Fe3O4/Sb2WO6 catalyst exhibits exceptional catalytic efficiency, demonstrating its capability to efficiently decontaminate low-concentration MB wastewater. Kinetic analyses reveal that the photo Fenton-like mineralization route adheres to the first-order reaction kinetic model, and approximately 100% mineralization of MB is achieved with a minimal catalyst amount of (4 mg/L). The straightforward preparation and outstanding performance of Fe3O4/Sb2WO6 position it as a promising candidate for the purification of dye pollutants.

Abstract:In this study, the catalytic properties of Fenton-like catalyst based on magnesium ferrite nanoparticles for IBP degradation were examined. Structural and morphological studies showed the low crystallinity and mesoporous structure for the catalyst obtained via a glycine-nitrate method. The influences of catalyst dosage, oxidant concentration, and solution pH on the pollutant degradation were investigated. The pseudo-first-order model describes kinetic data, and under optimal condition (catalyst dose of 0.5 g L -1 , H 2 O 2 concentration of 20.0 mM, and pH of 8.0), apparent rate constant reached 0.091 min -1 . It was shown that Fenton reaction was mainly induced by iron atoms on the catalyst surface, which is supported by very low iron leaching (up to 0.05 mg L -1 ) and high catalytic activity at neutral solution pH (6.0-8.0). It was found that the IBP mineralization onto magnesium ferrite catalyst was rapid and reached up to 98-100% within 40 min. Thus, prepared magnesium ferrite nanoparticles can be used as an effective Fenton-like catalyst for the IBP degradation from wastewater.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of modified hydroxyapatite nanoparticles, Ca10-xFex-yWy(PO4)6(OH)2, was applied for the degradation of methylene blue (MB), fast green FCF (FG) and norfloxacin (NOR). XPS analysis pointed to the successful partial replacement of Ca by Fe. Under photo-electro-Fenton process, the catalyst Ca4FeII1·92W0·08FeIII4(PO4)6(OH)2 was combined with UVC radiation and electrogenerated H2O2 in a Printex L6 carbon-based gas diffusion electrode. The application of only 10 mA cm-2 resulted in 100% discoloration of MB and FG dyes in 50 min of treatment at pH 2.5, 7.0 and 9.0. The proposed treatment mechanism yielded maximum TOC removal of ∼80% and high mineralization current efficiency of ∼64%. Complete degradation of NOR was obtained in 40 min, and high mineralization of ∼86% was recorded after 240 min of treatment. Responses obtained from LC-ESI-MS/MS are in line with the theoretical Fukui indices and the ECOSAR data. The study enabled us to predict the main degradation route and the acute and chronic toxicity of the by-products formed during the contaminants degradation.

Abstract:Hybrid composites based on ferrite nanoparticles have shown their effectiveness in the heterogeneous Fenton process due to the multiple properties such as ferromagnetism and biocompatibility. In this work, Magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles are synthesized and dispersed thanks to the anchoring plasma-created sites onto water hyacinth fibers used as the catalytic support. The obtained composites were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDX, and the magnetization properties were assessed at different temperatures (20 K, 150 K, and 300 K). The results reveal uniform dispersed nanorod-shaped particles covering the entire surface of the biomass with the saturation magnetization at 15 emu.g −1 . The Fenton degradation process was optimized in terms of pH, mass, contact time and pollutant concentration, thus the catalytic performance achieved on two organometallic model pollutants, namely merbromine (MB) and the green complex of naphthol B (NGB) give degradation efficiencies of 97.01 and 99.70% respectively. The Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model better describes the phenomenon where adsorption is the rate-limiting step given the high reactivity of generated species. The trapping species experiments show that besides hydroxyl radicals that contribute mainly to the degradation, other species such as superoxide and hydroperoxyl radicals are involved in the overall degradation mechanism. The obtained material is effective in the plasma-Fenton coupling process and the leaching test confirms their stability after four reuse cycles with the degradation rate greater than 85.10%.

Abstract:Magnetic nanoparticles of multi-metal co-doped magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) were synthesized from saprolite laterite ore by a hydrothermal method, and firstly proposed as a heterogeneous photon-Fenton-like catalyst for degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The factors that influence the degradation reaction including pH value, the concentration of H2O2 and the amount of catalyst, were systematically investigated. The doped MgFe2O4 exhibited a degradation efficiency up to 96.8%, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiencies about 85.6% and 68.3%, respectively, under visible light illumination for 180min. The high activity is mainly attributed to the high specific surface area of the catalyst and the synergistic interaction between photo-catalytic oxidation and Fenton-like oxidation. Moreover, the catalyst also showed good stability and recycling performance for degrading RhB. After five consecutive degradation cycles, the activity decayed no more than 10%. Compared to other catalysts prepared from pure chemical agents, the multi-metal co-doped MgFe2O4 is more competitive due to its high activity, good stability, ease of recollection, and especially the use of saprolite laterite ore as precursor. This work may provide a new avenue to synthesize efficient ferrite catalysts for degrading organic pollutants in wastewater by using natural minerals.
Porous Photo-Fenton Catalysts Rapidly Triggered by Levodopa-Based Mussel-Inspired Coatings for Enhanced Dye Degradation and Sterilization.

Abstract:The advanced oxidation process of the photo-Fenton reaction can produce hydroxyl radicals with extremely strong oxidizing properties for the efficient and green degradation of various chemical and microbial pollutants. Herein, we report an approach to fabricating heterogeneous Fenton catalysts of β-FeOOH nanorods on porous substrates triggered by mussel-inspired coatings of levodopa (3,4-dihydroxy-phenyl-l-alanine, l-DOPA) and polyethylenimine (PEI) for efficient photocatalytic dyes' degradation and sterilization. The l-DOPA-based coatings not only promote the formation and immobilization of β-FeOOH nanorods on the porous substrates by strong coordination between catechol/carboxyl groups and Fe3+ but also improve the energy band structure of the Fenton catalysts through a valence band blue shift and band gap narrowing. The photo-Fenton catalysts prepared by the l-DOPA-based coatings exhibit high electron transport efficiency and improved utilization of sunlight. Only 2 h of mineralization is needed to fabricate these catalysts with excellent photocatalytic efficiency, in which the degradation efficiency of methylene blue can reach 99% within 30 min, whereas the sterilization efficiency of E. coli/S. aureus can reach 93%/94% within 20 min of the photo-Fenton reaction. Additionally, the prepared catalysts reveal a high photodegradation performance for various dyes including methylene blue, methyl blue, methyl orange, direct yellow, and rhodamine B. Furthermore, the catalysts retain high dye degradation efficiencies of above 90% after five photodegradation cycles, indicating cycling performance and good stability.
Confining FeNi nanoparticles in biomass-derived carbon for effectively photo-Fenton catalytic reaction for polluted water treatment

Abstract:Photo-Fenton catalytic degradation organic contaminant is considered as a promising approach to water purification and environmental remediation. The novel class of photo-Fenton heterogeneous composite with large specific surface area, abundant active sites, uniform and stable metal ions, and fast Fe2+/Fe3+ conversion rate is considered as potential catalysts. Herein, a highly efficient and sustainable photo-Fenton heterogeneous composite (FeNi@corncob-activated carbon (CCAC)) was prepared by confining FeNi nanoparticles in CCAC through a simple solvothermal and activated-carbonization method. The porous structure and a high specific surface area of CCAC would effectively disperse FeNi nanoparticles, causing a significantly enhanced photo-Fenton catalytic performance. The RhB degradation rate of FeNi@CCAC was 2.3 times higher than that of FeNi. After five cycles, RhB degradation rate of FeNi@CCAC was barely decreased, confirming that FeNi@CCAC had high cyclability and reproducibility. Moreover, the reaction mechanism was analyzed in-depth via photoelectrochemical and electron spin resonance characterization. The outstanding results can be attributed to the contribution of the active species ‧OH, ‧O2–, and h+ in photo-Fenton degradation of RhB. Notably, FeNi@CCAC also has excellent photo-Fenton catalytic performance in sewage. Abstract:We synthesized the magnetic recyclable Ti3C2 derived N-TiO2@C@Fe3O4 for photo-Fenton degradation of organic pollutants through high-temperature calcination and solvothermal methods. Ti3C2 was first calcined into TiO2@C with a homogeneous titanium source and a two-dimensional carbon framework. Then the magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4) were loaded by solvothermal method, which effectively solved the problem of repeated circulation of powder catalysts. N-TiO2@C@Fe3O4 could be used as an excellent co-catalyst to improve the decomposition efficiency of H2O2 in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This significantly reduced the amount of H2O2 and Fe2+ in the photo-Fenton system. The N-TiO2@C@Fe3O4 photo-Fenton system could degrade 96.5% of Rhodamine B (RhB) within 300 s and maintain a recycling rate of more than 90% after 10 cycles. This system also had favorable applicability to the same wastewater of antibiotics. This mechanism was proposed that the N-TiO2@C@Fe3O4 photo-Fenton system activated H2O2 to generate hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide radicals (·O2−) to further attack RhB. This research provided novel insights for the photo-Fenton collaborative catalytic system to achieve advanced oxidation treatment of pollutants in the water environment.

Abstract:Heterogeneous electro-Fenton (hetero-EF) process is an emerging alternative for effective oxidation of recalcitrant micropollutants, but it is hampered by limited hydroxyl radical (•OH) generation and low stability on the iron-based cathodes. Herein, we demonstrate an enhanced hetero-EF performance via modulation of iron electronic structure in an ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC). By tuning the cobalt incorporation, the highly-dispersed iron-cobalt (FeCo) nanoalloys in mesochannels (Fe0.5Co0.5@OMC) show a 3-fold increase in •OH yield compared with Fe@OMC, achieving degradation efficiency with 92% of sulfamethazine (SMT) and 99% of rhodamine B (RhB), and the corresponding total organic carbon (TOC) removal with 66% of SMT and 85% of RhB within 2 h in neutral pH, respectively. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that iron incorporated with cobalt reduces energy barrier for facile generation of H2O2 and •OH from O2 through direct electron transfer, along with decreased overpotential. Meanwhile, cobalt doping promotes H2O2 decomposition by accelerated Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle and Co(II)/Co(III) redox. Furthermore, spatially confined and half-embedded structure endows the nanocatalyst (8 nm) excellent durability within a wide pH value range and good stability in cycle tests. A plausible reaction mechanism and degradation pathway for SMT are proposed. Moreover, the superiority of Fe0.5Co0.5@OMC cathode is maintained in simulated wastewater, suggesting an enormous potential in practical wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The photo-Fenton process provides a sustainable and cost-effective strategy for removing refractory organic contaminants in wastewater. Herein, a high-efficient Fe-doped g-C3N4 photocatalyst (Fe@CN10) with a unique 3D porous mesh structure was prepared by one-pot thermal polymerization for ultrafast degradation of azo dyes, antibiotics, and phenolic acids in heterogeneous photo-Fenton systems under visible light irradiation. Fe@CN10 exhibited a synergy between adsorption-degradation processes due to the co-existence of Fe3C and Fe3N active sites. Specifically, Fe3C acted as an adsorption site for pollutant and H2O2 molecules, while Fe3N acted as a photocatalytic active site for the high-efficient degradation of MO. Resultingly, Fe@CN10 showed a photocatalytic degradation rate of MO up to 140.32 mg/L min-1. The dominant ROS contributed to the removal of MO in the photo-Fenton pathway was hydroxyl radical (•OH). Surprisingly, as the key reactive species, singlet oxygen (1O2) generated from superoxide radical (•O2-) also efficiently attacked MO in a photo-self-Fenton pathway. Additionally, sponge/Fe@CN10 was prepared and filled in the continuous flow reactors for nearly 100% degradation of MO over 150 h when treating artificial organic wastewater. This work provided a facile route to prepare highly-active Fe-doped photocatalysts and develop a green photocatalytic system for wastewater treatment in the future.

Abstract:Compared with traditional heterogeneous Fenton catalysis, iron-based catalysts with nano-confinement effect could significantly improve the effectiveness for organic pollutants degradation, due to the shorter migration distance and longer half-life of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Here, we encapsulated the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles in the lumen of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) by means of the electrostatic interactions to fabricate the Fe 3 O 4 @HNTs nanoreactor with an outstanding Fenton-like catalytic performance. The instrumental characterizations indicated that the Fe 3 O 4 NPs successfully loaded on the inner wall of HNTs. An active dye acid fuchsin (AF) was chosen as the target pollution to evaluate the Fenton-like catalytic performance of Fe 3 O 4 @HNTs nanoreactor. The experimental results showed that the degradation efficiency of 50 mg L −1 AF could approach 100% in 120 min reaction time under almost neutral pHs. To have an insight into the Fenton-like mechanism of Fe 3 O 4 @HNTs nanoreactor, the comparisons of AF degradation in different systems, dominant free radicals, iron leaching concentration, H 2 O 2 decomposition efficiency, and ·OH production efficiency were investigated in details. In addition, the degradation pathways of AF were also predicted based on the density functional theory, frontier orbit theory, and high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrum (HPLC-QTOF-MS) technique.

Abstract:Fenton reactions have been increasingly applied to emergent pollutants degradation. Although homogeneous reaction by classical Fenton enables organic wastewater degradation, long treatment time and high iron catalyst concentrations are needed, raising environmental concerns. This paper proposed an innovative and cheap solution to degrade Rhodamine B (RmB) by combining magnetic nanomaterials of Fe3O4as the catalyst with microwave-enhanced fenton-like system. The main operational parameters were optimized systematically (hydrogen peroxide concentration; Fe3O4dosage; catalyst cycles; reaction time and reaction temperature). The degradation rate of Rhodamine B was increased and accelerated due to the assistance of microwave irradiation, with value of 99% after heated for only 5 min, even higher than that of treated by traditional Fenton process for 20 min. Moreover, six cyclic tests for Rhodamine B degradation showed that the magnetic catalyst was very stable, recoverable, highly active, and easy to separate using an external magnet. Hence, microwave-enhanced Fenton-like system with magnetic nanomaterials of Fe3O4as the catalyst has potential use in organic pollutant removal.

Abstract:This paper describes pen interface using surface acoustic wave tactile display. Using the display, tactile sensation like a feeling of drawing by a charcoal can be generated. Combined with a graphics tablet with an LCD, it is possible to generate both visual information and tactile sensation dynamically. To adding the reality of sensation, control referring to m-sequence random number is proposed and described in this paper. Measurement results of pen vibration during rubbing the display with the reference and those without it were compared. FFT analysis results of the pen vibration are also compared.

Abstract:Photocatalysis holds great promise for addressing water pollution caused by organic dyes, and the development of Ag2O/Fe3O4 aims to overcome the challenges of slow degradation efficiency and difficult recovery of photocatalysts. In this study, we present a novel, environmentally friendly Ag2O/Fe3O4 magnetic nanocomposite synthesized via a simple coprecipitation method, which not only constructs a type II heterojunction but also successfully couples photocatalysis and Fenton reaction, enhancing the broad-spectrum response and efficiency. The Ag2O/Fe3O4 (10%) nanocomposite demonstrates exceptional degradation performance toward organic dyes, achieving 99.5% degradation of 10 mg/L methyl orange (MO) within 15 min under visible light irradiation and proving its wide applicability by efficiently degrading various dyes while maintaining high stability over multiple testing cycles. Magnetic testing further highlighted the ease of Ag2O/Fe3O4 (10%) recovery using magnetic force. This innovative approach offers a promising strategy for constructing high-performance photocatalytic systems for addressing water pollution caused by organic dyes.
