Abstract:A NiCoCrAlYSiHf coating prepared via arc ion plating was irradiated using a high-current pulsed electron beam (HCPEB) technique. The self-quenching and polishing effect induced by HCPEB treatment normalized the defects, re-melted the surface, refined the grains, introduced the dislocations, and changed the elemental distributions. After oxidation for 200 h, severe spalling of the oxide scale and internal oxidation occurred in the original coating. The restructuring of the remelted layer contributed to a very stable, continuous, slow-growing, and uniform α-Al2O3 scale during the entire oxidation stage. HCPEB technique is an effective way to dramatically improve the service life of an MCrAlYX-type coating.

Preparation of Cr Hard Coatings by Ion Beam Assisted Electron Beam Vapor Deposition on Ni and Cu Substrates

Abstract:Hard Cr coatings on Ni and Cu surface were deposited by means of ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) for the replacement of electroplated chromium in order to avoid the problems of polluting water and hydrogen-embrittlement films from the electroplating. The morphology and mechanical properties of films were examined using SEM, AFM, optical metallographic microscopy, microhardness tester, scratch tester and profile meter. Results showed that adding Al interlayer can improve the adhesion and decrease the residual stress between the coating and substrate due to atom diffusion between the interfaces. The thickness of the interlayer is about 100-200 nm. It concludes that the microhardness of the IBAD samples can reach or even surpass that of the electroplated. It is feasible to obtain Cr hard coatings on some metal substrates by IBAD with optimized equipment and processing. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The surface of non-equiatomic CrFeCoNiMo high entropy alloy (HEA) was irradiated by high-current pulsed electron beam (HCPEB). Microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the CrFeCoNiMo HEA before and after HCPEB irradiation were studied systematically. The results of XRD analysis indicated that the surface of the irradiated samples exhibited preferential orientation on (1 1 1) and (2 0 0). Microstructure observations revealed that a compact remelted layer was formed on the surface of the alloy after HCPEB irradiation, the thickness of the remelted layer rose as the increase of pulse numbers. Besides, numerous nano σ particles, nanocrystallites with an average size about 109 nm and abundant deformed structures also appeared in the remelted layer. The mechanical properties of CrFeCoNiMo alloy were significantly enhanced after HCPEB treatment, which was mainly ascribed to intense plastic deformation via stress, sub-grain strengthening along with precipitation hardening. Electrochemical results demonstrated that all the irradiated specimens had a positive potential and a lower current density in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution compared with the untreated sample. The homogenized surface and the efficient eliminating of the local concentration of Cr element jointly contributed to the improvement of corrosion resistance.

Abstract:The “HOPE-I” type high-current pulsed electron beam (HCPEB) equipment was used to irradiate the pure aluminum material with Zr coating preset by ball milling to realize the alloying of a Zr–Al coating surface. The microstructure and phase analysis were conducted by XRD, SEM, and TEM. The experimental results show that after Zr alloying on the Al surface by HCPEB, a layer of 15 μm was formed on the surface of the sample, which was mainly composed of Zr and Al–Zr intermetallic compounds. A large number of Al3Zr (Ll2) particles was uniformly distributed in the alloyed layer, and the Al grains were obviously refined. In addition, the surface hardness and corrosion resistance of the samples were improved significantly after HCPEB irradiation.

Abstract:An arc ion-plated NiCoCrAlYHfSi coating modified by a high-current pulsed electron beam (HCPEB) was examined in this study. The dynamic growth behavior and formation mechanisms of the thermally grown oxide (TGO) of the original and modified coatings were thoroughly compared by isothermal oxidation at 1050 °C. HCPEB irradiation led to the transformation of the rough original coating into a flat, smooth, and dense structure. Furthermore, Y-Al nanoparticles and high density of dislocations were also obtained in the modified layer. These modification characteristics can establish favorable conditions for the rapid accumulation and stable growth of the protective Al 2 O 3 particles. With the extension of oxidation time, the CrO 3 formed in the oxide film left many small pits after volatilization, but these pits were filled with Al 2 O 3 particles. Compared with the oxide film of the original coating, the TGO of the modified coating is flat, continuous, and dense, and its growth rate is notably slower. Also, the growth of Ni, Cr, and Co rich oxides was expectantly restrained. Obviously, the HCEPB technique has the capacity to change the growth behavior of the TGO and significantly enhance the coating's resistance to high-temperature oxidation.

Abstract:In this work, a TiN/TiCN/Al2O3/TiN coating deposited onto cemented carbide matrix by chemical vapor deposition was irradiated by high-current pulsed electron beam (HCPEB). The influence of pulse times on the phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the coating investigated. The results showed that no new phase was produced, the grain size of the coating surface was refined, the surface became flat, and the surface roughness decreased after HCPEB treatment. The TiN/TiCN/Al2O3/TiN coating presented a smooth surface with good mechanical performance after HCPEB. A maximum hardness was obtained after 15 pulses, and the 15-pulse irradiated coating showed better wear resistance. The improvement in the coating's performance after irradiation was mainly attributed to the formation of grain refinement and crystal defects, as well as the change of stress field inside the coating. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of HCPEB modification in the preparation of high-performance coating by analyzing the microstructure and property of coating under different pulses.

Abstract:The effects of intense pulsed ion beams (IPIB) irradiation (ions of C+ and H+, accelerating voltage V=250kV, ion current density J=100–200A/cm2, pulse duration τ=60ns, and pulse number n=12–24) on the phase and microstructure response of Ni3Al-based alloy IC6 have been studied. It is shown that the deformation texture can be formed on the surface layer of target under IPIB irradiation with a low current density (100A/cm2). With further increasing ion current density (150–200A/cm2), the formation of amorphous and new phases occurs. A higher density of dislocations can be observed in the irradiated specimen compared to the unirradiated specimen.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper was to investigate surface alloying of Sn/Al system by high current pulses electron beam (HCPEB) irradiation. As a result, Sn covered on the surface and the formation of large size craters caused the increasing of surface roughness at the early stage of repeated pulsed irradiation. Subsequently, increasing pulsed irradiation led to the dissolution of Al and Sn together with elimination of craters forming a smooth allying layer with low surface roughness. On the topmost layer of alloying layer in Sn/Al system was the remelted layer with uniformly distributed ultrafine Sn particles. The beneath was diffused layer consisting of abundant structure defects, in the vicinity of which were separated out a large number of Sn particles. The microhardness was increased to about 0.82 GPa in the alloying layer after 35-pulsed samples. The tribological property was enhanced by HCPEB irradiation that induced the refinement of Sn particles and the formation of hard matrix.

Abstract:Ni–W alloys with a (2 2 0) or (1 1 1) preferred orientation growth and amorphous structure were prepared from a pyrophosphate bath using the electrodeposition method. Structure transformation can be the result of the bath temperature (Tb) and the concentration of sodium tungstate (CW) in the bath. Increasing the Tb and CW can change the crystal growth from (2 2 0) to (1 1 1). At a higher Tb and CW, an amorphous Ni–W alloy can be obtained. The tungsten content in the coatings should be responsible for the structure change. The three textured Ni–W alloys with a (2 2 0) texture, (1 1 1) texture and amorphous structure were annealed at different temperatures ranging from 200 to 700 °C. The microhardness, corrosion resistance and HER of the as-deposited and annealed Ni–W alloys were comparatively studied. The results show that the microhardness of the amorphous Ni–W alloy is the highest and reaches 1028 HV after annealing at 400 °C. The (2 2 0)-textured Ni–W alloy has the best corrosion resistance, which is further improved after annealing, while the HER activity of the (1 1 1) textured Ni-W alloy is superior.

Abstract:The bond coat of a NiCrAlY thermal barrier coating plays an important role in solving the thermal expansion mismatch between a metal matrix and a ceramic layer and in improving the oxidation resistance of the whole thermal barrier coating. However, the NiCrAlY bond coat prepared by low-pressure plasma spraying is not conducive to its oxidation resistance because its lamellar structure is loose, porous and the surface is rough. To improve the oxidation resistance of the bond coat, the NiCrAlY bond coat prepared by plasma spraying was modified by high-current pulsed electron beam with different energy densities. Under the electron beam irradiation, the surface of the coating became smooth, and there was a 3–5 μm thick remelting layer on the surface. Under the irradiation, the thickness of the thermal growth oxide layer decreased, and the oxidation resistance was significantly improved, the oxidation product being mainly Al2O3.

Abstract:An equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) thin film coating has been successfully developed by high-vacuum Radio Frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. The deposition of a smooth and homogenous thin film with uniformly distributed equiaxed nanograins (grain size similar to nm) was achieved through this technique. The thin film coating exhibits a high hardness of 6.8 +/- 0.6 GPa, which is superior compared to its bulk counterpart owing to its nanocrystalline structure. Furthermore, it also shows good ductility through nanoindentation, which demonstrates its potential to serve as an alternative to traditional transition metal nitride or carbide coatings for applications in micro-fabrication and advanced coating technologies.

Abstract:A recrystallization-refined Ni-Fe-Cr-Nb-Ti-Al high-entropy alloy coating was prepared by supersonic particle deposition followed by laser irradiation. The surface-interface morphology, microstructure, grain orientation, and phase were examined by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometry, electron backscatter diffraction, and X-ray diffraction analyses, respectively. The inverse pole figure of the coating showed that a large number of ultrafine grains and even nanograins filled the entire microscopic image. In addition, the refined grains did not show obvious preferred orientations and indicated isotropic features. Further, the fatigue limit of the recrystallized coating was 252 MPa, and the ability to realize uniform plastic deformation and stable deformation was enhanced owing to the high tensile strength and elongation ratio, which were 3000 MPa and 14%, respectively. The coating had a friction coefficient of 0.189, residual stress of −14.3 ± 6 MPa, and microhardness of 720 kgf/mm2. The capacitance radius of the Nyquist plot indicated that passivation formation improved the shielding performance of the coating.

Abstract:The surface microstructure of air plasma spraying (APS) CoCrAlY coatings deposited on the Ni-based superalloy before and after high-current pulsed electron beam (HCPEB) irradiation was characterized by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). After HCPEB irradiation, the rough surface of APS-CoCrAlY was remelted and changed as 'hill and valley' aspect with a compact appearance. Besides, the thermally sprayed defects including rough surface, porosities, microcracks and etc were removed. In addition to the usual nano-grains, the HCPEB treatment has induced deformed structures containing Y-Al oxide particles within the remelted layer. Transient oxidation tests were carried out. As for the APS-CoCrAlY, a continuous thermally grown oxide (TGO) protective layer was not formed, and mixed oxides were instead formed on the surface due to its high roughness, the presence of structural defects and chemical heterogeneities. Comparatively, as for the HCPEB-CoCrAlY, a complete and dense α-Al2O3 layer was formed rapidly in the remelted surface due to the irradiated effects during the transient oxidation process, which guaranteed a protective effect on the bond coat for further oxidation behavior.

Effect of Current Density on the Mechanical Properties and Defects of Nanocrystalline Cr-Al Solid Solution Alloy Coatings

Abstract:Hard chromium coatings electrodeposited are highly valued in multiple industries for their excellent mechanical characteristics and resistance to corrosion. The general process for preparing these coatings includes Cr6+ and Cr3+ process, the Cr6+ process is highly toxic and strictly regulated. The Cr3+ process is less hazardous but can produce coatings with defects. We propose an alternative process of electroplating nanocrystalline Cr-Al alloy coating with high hardness by using anhydrous Cr2+ electrolyte. The impact of current density on mechanical properties (i.e., hardness H, elastic modulus E, fracture toughness H/E and resistance to plastic deformation H-3/E-2) and coating defects has been systematically investigated. As current density increases from 1 mA/cm(2) to 5 mA/cm(2), the coating surface morphology changes from polyhedral to nodular clusters with grain size decreasing from a few microns to several nanometers. The nanoindentation test was performed on the cross-section of the coating. The nanohardness H of the coating reaches a high of 8.26 GPa, attributed to both solid solution strengthening and grain refinement. A significant decrease in elastic modulus E of the coating compared to bulk Cr is observed and can be explained by the grain boundary mediated process and a grain coalescence model. High values H/E and H-3/E-2 indicate improved fracture toughness and resistance to plastic deformation of the coating. As current density exceeding 5 mA/cm(2), laminar cracks develop due to co-deposition of CrCl2 particles. This is attributed to the electrolyte acidity transition, caused by depletion of Al2Cl7- at the interface. This work provides a deeper understanding of the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties and defects of Cr-Al alloy coatings and also provides a new method to fabricate high-quality coatings with enhanced properties. The defect-free coatings achieved in this study have great potential for practical applications in various fields such as tribological and corrosion resistance coatings.
Influences of the Irradiation of Intense Pulsed Ion Beam (IPIB) on the Surface of Ni₃Al Base Alloy IC6

Abstract:In this paper, we treated the Ni₃Al based alloy samples with intense pulsed ion beams (IPIB) at the beam parameters of 250KV acceleration voltage, 100 - 200 A/㎤ current density and 60 ㎱ pulse duration. We simulated the thermal-mechanical process near the surface of Ni₃Al based alloy with our STEIPIB codes. The surface morphology and the cross-section microstructures of samples were observed with SEM, the composition of the sample surface layer was determined by X-ray Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (XEDS) and the microstructure on the surface was observed by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). The results show that heating rate increases with the current density of IPIB and cooling rate reached highest value less than 150 A/㎤. The irradiation of IPIB induced the segregation of Mo and adequate beam parameter can improve anti-oxidation property of IC6 alloy. Some craters come from extraneous debris and liquid droplets, and some maybe due to the melting of the intersection region of interphase. Increasing the pulse number enlarges average size of craters and decreases number density of craters.

Abstract:Some unavoidable factors in the operating environment could damage single-crystal components of nickel-based single-crystal superalloys. This work prepared an epitaxial growth NiCoCrAlYTa repaired coating without the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) phenomenon on a nickel-based single-crystal superalloy by electron beam cladding. The microstructure of two cross-sections and two surfaces at different depths were characterized. Moreover, the formation mechanism of coating dendrite was revealed by studying the relationship between coating dendrite size, growth direction, and solidification rate. The microstructure evolution and crystal growth orientation of the coating were investigated. The microstructural investigation of the sample revealed that the dendrites' orientations on the coating's horizontal section were different, and its characteristics were highly visible on the surface of the coating. The crystal growth orientations of the coating on the vertical cross-section parallel/perpendicular to the scanning direction of the electron beam were also different. Moreover, the average primary dendrite arm spacing (PDAS) of the columnar dendrite in the different areas of the coating was different and increased from 2 μm to 4 μm. The oxidation resistance of the coating at 1000 °C was about three times higher than that of the substrate.

Abstract:Nanometer-sized Al2O3 particle-reinforced nickel-phosphorus matrix composite (Ni-P-Al2O3) coatings were prepared by electroless deposition. Particles are found to distribute homogeneously in Ni-P-Al2O3 coatings by field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the crystallization temperature of the composite coating decreases from the results of X-ray diffractometry and differential scanning calorimetry. The activation energy and Avrami exponent of crystallization are lowered due to the co-deposited particles in composite coatings. Nickel phosphide precipitates after heat treatment at 230°C for 24 h in Ni-P-Al2O3 coatings, while Ni-P coatings keep amorphous under such condition. Because of the existence of nanometer-sized particles, the microhardness of the composite coatings increases greatly. With heat treatment, the microhardness values of composite coatings can reach as high as HV50 1150.
Enhancing NiCoB alloy coatings with hBN nanoparticles: exploring structural, mechanical, and corrosion improvements through pulse electrodeposition

Abstract:NiCoB/hBN composite coatings deposited onto a 304 stainless steel substrate by pulsed current electrodeposition method. The morphology, chemical composition, structural, mechanical and corrosion properties of the coatings were investigated. Optimal microhardness, corrosion resistance, and a lower coefficient of friction were achieved when the hBN concentration in the plating bath was 8 g L −1 . Vickers microhardness increased from 610 to 980 HV and the coefficient of friction decreased from 0.53 to 0.4. Grain size decreased as the amount of added hBN increased, affecting the microstructure of the coating. Increasing the concentration of hBN in the plating solution increased the percentage of hBN particles in the film, reducing the percentage of total metal from 95.18% to 89.76%. The magnitude of the Nyquist parabola of the composite film from the bath containing 8 g L−1 hBN increased by an average of 5 times compared to that of the NiCoB metal alloy film.

Abstract:A batch of nickel-cobalt alloy coatings was pulse-electroplated on gun steel (PCrNi3MoVA) surface, in which weight fractions of Co element are 39.9 %, 55.5 %, 67.5 %, and 79.8 %, respectively. The formations of phase and crystal structure in nickel-cobalt coatings were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis. The layers' surface morphology and chemical composition were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry. The tribological and nano-mechanical performances of the coatings were used to evaluate by high-speed reciprocating friction and wear tester and nanoindentation tester, respectively. The results showed that the preferred orientation of the coatings gradually changed from (111) to (220) with the rising cobalt content, resulting in changes in the surface morphology of the coatings from pyramidal grains to spherical particles and then to a triangular pyramid structure. As the Co content was 55.5 wt.% in the nickel-cobalt coating, its crystalline grain size reached the smallest value of 11.53 nm, enhancing the hardness and wear resistance.

Abstract:The surface modification technology based on high current pulsed electron beam (HCPEB) can eliminate the porous structure of thermal sprayed coatings and obtain amorphous coatings with excellent corrosion resistance. In this study, Al-Co-Ce master alloy and powder were firstly prepared, followed by the preparation of an Al-Co-Ce alloy coating on Q235 steel substrate using high velocity flame (HVOF) spraying technology. Finally, HVOF sprayed coating was irradiated and remelted by HCPEB to change its porous crystalline microstructure into dense and amorphous form which greatly enhances its corrosion resistance. The combination of thermal spraying and HCPEB surface remelting proposed in this study provides a new process for preparing Al-Co-Ce amorphous alloy coatings.
