Abstract:A special issue of Chemistry Teacher International Vol 4, Issue 2, June 2022 Guest editors Bipulbehari Saha, Francesca Kerton and Hemda Garelick In many chemistry curricula Green Chemistry has become a feature. In introductory chemistry courses in higher education more and more attention is given to the principles of green chemistry as well as the ideas of sustainable development (UN Sustainable Development Goals). This includes design principles like 'cradle to cradle', 'cradle to grave' as well as life cycle analysis. The number of concrete examples to illustrate these principles that are used in education at this moment is limited, even though there are many recent examples. Within chemistry education it is important for students to understand the role chemistry plays in society. One of these roles is to apply chemical knowledge to design processes that implement the principles of Green Chemistry and help in Sustainable Development. In order to demonstrate the role of chemistry more information for teachers is needed, so they can use this information and share this with their students. In total 9 articles are published in a special issue of CTI (Vol 4, Issue 2, June 2022) , most of them describing interesting experiments that can easily be used by teachers to introduce and illustrate the principles of green chemistry. Some of the experiments were used and designed to be carried out at home. This was caused by the lockdowns occurring during the covid pandemia. Abstract:Chemists use atoms as the building blocks in reactions to design new molecules for materials, medicines, and much more. However, the chemical elements on our planet are a finite resource, so we need to prevent them from running out or being wasted. How do chemists do this? The principles of Green Chemistry guide chemists, helping them to design new products both efficiently and safely, while limiting or preventing pollution along the way. Scientists consider them through every step of creating a new product—from early experiments in the laboratory, all the way up to large-scale industrial production. Chemists can compare the materials and processes used to create their products using a Life Cycle Assessment, which can calculate factors such as water, energy, and resource inputs as well as production of pollutants like carbon dioxide. All of this means we can do exciting and important science while protecting our planet, too!

Abstract:The concepts of sustainability and sustainable chemistry have attracted increasing attention in recent years, being of great importance to the younger generation. In this Viewpoint Article, we share how early-career chemists can contribute to the sustainable transformation of their discipline. We identify ways in which they can engage to catalyse action for change. This article does not attempt to answer questions about the most promising or pressing areas driving research and chemical innovation in the context of sustainability. Instead, we want to inspire and engage early-career chemists in pursuing sustainable actions by showcasing opportunities in education, outreach and policymaking, research culture and publishing, while highlighting existing challenges and the complexity of the topic. We want to empower early-career chemists by providing resources and ideas for engagement for a sustainable future globally. While the article focuses on students and early-career chemists, it provides insights to further stimulate the engagement of scientists from diverse backgrounds.

Green and sustainable chemistry – The case for a systems-based, interdisciplinary approach

Abstract:Although the concepts underpinning green chemistry have evolved over the past 30 years, the practice of green chemistry must move beyond the environmental and human health-related roots of green chemistry towards a more systems-based, life cycle-informed, and interdisciplinary practice of chemistry. To make a transition from green to sustainable chemistry, one must learn to think at a systems level; otherwise green chemistry-inspired solutions are unlikely to be sustainable. This perspective provides a brief description of why the current situation needs to change and is followed by how life cycle thinking helps chemists avoid significant systems-level impacts. The transition from batch to continuous flow processing and novel approaches to isolation and purification provide a case for interdisciplinary collaboration. Finally, an example of end-of-useful-life considerations makes the case that systems and life cycle thinking from an interdisciplinary perspective needs to inform the design of new chemical entities and their associated processes.

Abstract:In this review we will highlight some of the science that exemplifies the principles of Green Chemistry, in particular the efficient use of materials and energy, development of renewable resources, and design for reduced hazard. Examples are drawn from a diverse range of research fields including catalysis, alternative solvents, analytical chemistry, polymer science, and toxicology. While it is impossible for us to be comprehensive, as the worldwide proliferation of Green Chemistry research, industrial application, conferences, networks, and journals has led to a wealth of innovation, the review will attempt to illustrate how progress has been made toward solving the sustainability goals of the 21st century by engaging at the molecular level.
