Abstract:Next generation: Editorial Board Co-Chair Jian Pei, together with the other Editorial Board members from China, reflects on the interdisciplinary future of organic chemistry and how the young Chinese researchers featured in this issue are making that future reality. As one of the basic subjects of chemistry, organic chemistry is of significant importance at the forefront of creating new matter. As organic chemistry develops in breadth and depth, in addition to pure chemical synthesis, organic chemistry is comprehensively correlated with other research areas. Great efforts have been devoted to the interdisciplinary research that brings organic chemistry together with life science, materials science, medicine, energy storage, and organic electronics. The precise synthesis provides a library of molecular probes for the investigation of biological processes and mechanisms of drug action. Development of new synthetic methodologies and their application in the total synthesis of natural products have especially shown the charm of organic chemistry. More efficient and green synthetic methods have also rapidly diversified the organic materials, which facilitates the development of organic electronics towards light, flexible, low-cost and intelligent electronic products that greatly change our life. China is growing to become a leader in fundamental research. Organic chemistry in China, in particular, has seen rapid development in the past few decades. The boundary between organic chemistry and other chemistry branches is turning more unclear. National Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has funded innovation to encourage the emergence of new interdisciplinary and cutting-edge research areas. So far, a number of young scientists have dedicated themselves to exploiting organic chemistry in other research areas, which represents a future direction for the development of organic chemistry, especially in China. This special issue highlights the excellent work from some of the early career researchers in China, which cover a broad variety of frontiers of organic chemistry, including metal catalytic organic reactions for the efficient construction of special or ring substrates, DFT study of metal-catalyzed reaction mechanisms, synthesis of small molecules or polymers which are applied as fluorescent probes in living cells or electronic materials in organic solar cells and organic field-effect transistors. Finally, we would like to sincerely thank all the authors for submitting their excellent work, and we truly hope this special issue can provide inspiration to researchers for further creative investigations in organic chemistry.
