Abstract:Nanocomposites of FeNi alloy/carbon nanotubes(CNTs)were synthesized by in-situ catalytic decomposition of benzene over FeNi nanoparticles produced by sol-gel fabrication and hydrogen reduction.FESEM and HRTEM investigations reveal that one-dimensional carbon species are produced.The test results of microwave electromagnetism parameters show that the theoretical reflection loss tends to decline at the matching frequency with the increase of the sample thickness.The sample FeNi22@C is an excellent candidate for microwave absorbent when the coating thickness is 1.5 mm,and the reflection loss is-4.74 dB with the frequency of 11.35 GHz.It is probable that by changing the component ratio of FeNi alloy and the absorption thickness of the composites and adjusting the complex permittivity and permeability of the composites,the microwave absorption properties of the composites can be optimized.

Abstract:The optimized electromagnetic (EM) parameters are highly indispensable for outstanding microwave absorbers. Generally speaking, it is very necessary to suitably improve permittivity and permeability of the materials. The combination of magnetic/dielectric materials is a good choice. Herein, the irregular shaped FeNi/C composites were synthesized in N-2, atmosphere with unsatisfied EM parameters. To further optimize EM parameters and enhance microwave absorption abilities, constructing one-dimensional (ID) structure is also an excellent scheme. ID FeNi/C nanofibers were successfully obtained by electrospinning technology combined with heat treatment. Enhanced microwave absorption abilities can be fulfilled by conductive network structure, better dielectric loss, and stronger interface polarization intensity. Moreover, carbonized time toward nanofibers plays a key role in microwave absorption, which could influence complex permittivity and dielectric loss of materials. It is found that FeNi/C nanofibers with highly carbonized degree display better microwave absorbing properties. The reflection loss (RL) values less than -10 dB can be observed in 12.8-17.2 GHz (a broad bandwidth of 4.4 GHz) with an absorber thickness of only 1.8 mm. The absorber with a thickness of 2.7 mm has the minimum RL value of -24.8 dB at 9.4 GHz. In this regard, these nanofibers are very likely to be used as EM-wave absorbers in practical application. Furthermore, this work provides a useful strategy to optimize electromagnetic parameters and absorption abilities of metal/carbon absorbers. It may promote the development of 1D metal/carbon composites in microwave absorption field.
Optimization of Electromagnetic Matching of Fe-Filled Carbon Nanotubes/Ferrite Composites for Microwave Absorption

Abstract:Composite microwave absorbers have been fabricated by Fe-filled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and a W-type hexagonal ferrite. The microwave absorption of the absorbers can be tuned by matching the dielectric loss and the magnetic loss by changing the ratio of ferrite in the composites. The microwave absorbing properties of the absorber are evidently improved as compared with the absorber containing only CNTs or ferrite. The reflection loss of the composites with 40 wt% ferrite and 6.2 vol% CNTs at 2.0mm thickness reached 21.9 dB at 8.5 GHz. The maximum absorption capability of 50.5 dB GHz was obtained at a ferrite concentration of 60 wt%. With the increase in the weight percentage of ferrite in the composites the resonance absorption peak shifted towards the lower frequency region.

Abstract:Carbon nanofibers with Co, Ni nanoparticle were synthesized by a two-step process involving electrospinning and heat treatment. Their phase composition, microstructure, elemental composition and electromagnetic characteristics were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and vector network analyzer (VNA). The microwave absorption performance of these carbon nanofibers was also studied. The results indicate that these composite nanofibers are intact and consist of amorphous carbon and face-centered cubic structured magnetic metals. The resultant metal nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed along carbon-based nanofibers which enhance the synergistic and interfacial effects between magnetic loss and dielectric loss. When the thicknesses of the absorbers are 1.5 mm, the absorption bandwidths (RL≤-10 dB) are approximately 4 GHz and 2.5 GHz for the Co/C, Ni/C composite nanofibers, respectively, which are obviously superior to pure carbon nanofibers. Co/C composite nanofibers exhibit a wider absorption band range and stronger microwave absorption intensity compared to Ni/C composite nanofibers, attributed to their excellent electromagnetic impedance matching and attenuation characteristics. This indicates that the Co/C composite nanofibers are promising candidates for novel microwave absorbing materials.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) filled with ferromagnetic metals have potential applications of microwave absorption and electromagnetic interference shielding due to their high aspect-ratio of nanostructures that promises low percolation threshold and their inner cavities which could incorporate magnetic materials to improve the permeability and magnetic loss of composites. It has been reported that CNTs have high permittivity [1, 2]. And it could be used as dielectric microwave absorbers due to their high permittivity [3, 4]. Excellent microwave absorption should have better electromagnetic match of magnetic loss and dielectric loss. The microwave absorption could be significantly improved by matching the dielectric and magnetic contribution from respective components (e.g. CNTs and Fe) [5]. For CNTs, only dielectric loss contributes to the energy loss of microwave, while for ferromagnetic nanowires, the effect of magnetic loss becomes dominant over the dielectric loss. Either only the dielectric loss or magnetic loss may induce weak microwave absorption due to the imbalance of the electromagnetic match. Here we directly fabricated the microwave absorber by as-grown Fe-filled CNTs, which have the dielectric properties of CNTs and magnetic properties of the filled iron nanowires.

Abstract:Magnetic oxides are widely used as electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers. To promote the absorption efficiency, tremendous efforts have been contributed to adjusting the composite, structure, and size of magnetic loss materials. Employing carbon materials (CNTs, CF, graphene, PANI) is an efficient way to improve the dielectric loss of the matrix. Anchoring the tiny-monodispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) onto the lightweight multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) leads to improve dielectric loss and impedance matching characteristic. Magnetic Fe3O4 NPs along the one-dimensional nanotubes direction play a good synergetic role with MWCNTs due to the interfacial strong chemical and structure bonding. The as-synthesized Fe3O4/MWCNTs nanocomposites exhibit efficient EM wave absorption characteristics (R-L av-10dB) with a maximum reflection loss of -63.64dB at 12.08GHz and a diminutive thickness of only 1.6mm. The magnetic Fe3O4 NPs show strong chemical and structure bonding with the one-dimensional MWCNTs. This work may show a way to broaden the application of such kinds of lightweight high-performance absorbing materials frameworks.

Abstract:Due to the growing harm of electromagnetic radiation, it is extremely urgent to develop high-efficiency microwave absorbers with tunable electromagnetic properties. Herein, a simple strategy for synthesizing hetero-atoms (sulfur) doped carbon-coated FeNi alloy nanocapsules (FeNi@C(S x ) NCs) by DC arc-discharge plasma was demonstrated. The hetero-interface between the FeNi alloy core and the graphitic shell induce interfacial polarization was found. Meantime, many defects produced by substitutional sulfur atoms in the graphitic shell facilitated dipole polarization and conduction loss. Besides, the multiple magnetic resonance produced by FeNi magnetic alloys worked together to optimize impedance matching. The excellent microwave absorption performance was attributed to the core-shell structure, dipole and interface polarizations, as well as favorable impedance matching. Importantly, the first-principles calculation was applied to prove the charge transfer and polarization process. The minimum reflection loss (RL) can reach up to −50.3 dB at a thickness of 1.6 mm.

Abstract:The electromagnetism and microwave absorption properties of SmCo coated single-wall carbon nanotubes (SmCo@SWCNTs) and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 ferrite (NiZn-ferrite) nanocrystalline composites with different ingredient weight ratios were investigated in the frequency range of 2–18 GHz. SmCo@SWCNTs were prepared by a direct current arc discharge method. NiZn-ferrite nanocrystalline was synthesized by a sol-gel method. The electromagnetic properties of the nanocomposites in the paraffin matrix were measured by a vector network analyzer. The Debye equation and Bruggeman symmetric medium equation were introduced to explain the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites, and the mechanisms for the dielectric and magnetic losses were discussed. The experiment results reveal that the absorbing properties of the nanocomposites could be improved by tuning for a suitable weight ratio between SmCo@SWCNTs and NiZn-ferrite nanocrystallines. The reflection loss simulation calculations demonstrated that the nanocomposite could be excellent materials for microwave absorption.

Abstract:The construction of multi-component composites has become an attractive strategy for high-performance microwave absorption through balancing the magnetic and dielectric loss. However, the influences of different components on absorption performance are ambiguous, which has inevitably hampered the widespread applications of microwave absorbents. Herein, we rationally designed the multi-component absorbers of N-doped carbon composited with Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles, and systematically investigate the impacts of Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles and Fe-Nx moieties on the microwave-absorbing capacities. It is found that the coexisitence of Fe/Fe3C and Fe-Nx is indispensable to realize the strong microwave absorption ability by simultaneously enhancing the dielectric and magnetic loss in the frequency range of 2-18 GHz. As expected, our optimal absorber dispersed in paraffin with a filler loading of 15 wt% exhibits the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) value of -49 dB and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (BWeff) value of 4.2 GHz at a low thickness. Our work specifies the importance and influence of the coexistence between the Fe-Nx configurations and Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles in the carbon-based composites for the superior microwave absorption and inspires the future fabrication of extraordinary materials in the electromagnetic field.

Abstract:Electron conduction capability plays an extremely important role in the field of electromagnetic wave energy conversion. Herein, a novel dual-conductive-network hybrid material was successfully synthesized, where carbon coated defecr-rich Fe2O3 anchored on multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The entangled MWCNTs serve as a carbon skeleton to support the porous Fe2O3 particle, coating by the ligand-derived conductive carbon. Decorated carbon layer not only acts as a link to connect the Fe2O3 and MWCNTs, but also furnish a new electronic transmission path. Related electromagnetic parameters and electron transportation behavior can be effectively adjusted and controlled via tuning carbon substrate content. Meanwhile, the typical defects and charge density distribution in this C@Fe2O3@MWCNTs system were proved by geometric phase analysis and electron holography technology. This ternary composite can be a potential excellent microwave absorber with a special conductive-netlike structure and multi-interface architecture, benefiting to the conductivity loss and interfacial polarization between porous Fe2O3 microspheres with carbon materials. The optimal reflection value of microwave loss is −49.9 dB at 10.0 GHz with the absorber thickness of 2.0 mm. The as-prepared C@Fe2O3@MWCNTs composites exhibit high-performance microwave absorption and cater to the highly efficient attenuation capability, thin thickness, and lightweight requirements for modern microwave absorption materials.

Abstract:Abstract Among many electromagnetic absorbing materials, carbon matrix composites are regarded as an ideal electromagnetic absorbing agent because of their advantages of low density, low cost and strong electromagnetic loss. It is generally believed that the properties of the electromagnetic absorbent are closely related to its composition and microstructure, but the understanding of the relevant mechanism needs to be further improved. Therefore, this paper studies a new ternary composite material HCNTs/Fe@Fe 3 O 4 , which is made of acidified carbon nanotubes (HCNTs) modified by magnetic core shell Fe@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The material has a variety of interface polarization and dipole loss forms, showing a good electromagnetic absorption capacity and impedance matching performance. The absorption band width of the electromagnetic absorber can reach 5.5 GHz at the thickness of 1.5 mm. The C o values of HCNTs/Fe-@Fe 3 O 4 and HCNTs/Fe-@Fe 2 O 3 samples with strong antioxidant capacity fluctuated with the change of frequency, indicating that the eddy current loss had a weak magnetic loss on the samples. Thus, it can be inferred that the changed C o value also indirectly proves that the magnetic loss of the sample may come from natural resonance.
Preparation, Electromagnetic and Enhanced Microwave Absorption Properties of Fe Nanoparticles Encapsulated in Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Using hollow Fe2O3 particles as the catalyst, the core/shell structured Fe/carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrid could be synthesized by a chemical vapor deposition method without the hydrogen reduction process. Based on the obtained results, a possible growth mechanism of the Fe/CNT hybrid was discussed. And the investigations of electromagnetic and microwave absorption performances indicate that a minimum reflection loss (RL) value of the obtained sample is ca. -40.15 dB at 17.15 GHz with a matching thickness of 1.5 mm, and the RL value below -20 dB can be obtained in the whole frequency range (1.0-18 GHz) with the sample thickness varies from 1.3 to 10.0 mm. The results demonstrate that a simple and environment-friendly route has been proposed for the production of core/shell structured carbon nanohybrid. The obtained Fe/CNT hybrid exhibits excellent microwave absorption properties and has potential applications in thin thickness and light-weight microwave absorbers. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Electromagnetic Wave Absorbing Properties of CNTs/Ferrite/PVDF Composites

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes coated with Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.6Fe1.96O4 spinel ferrites, were synthesized by a hydrothermal method at different CNTs/Ferrite ratio (CNTs/ferrite=1/3, 1/1). Then polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was introduced to be a composite for microwave absorption. The complex permittivity and permeability of the composites were measured in the frequency range of 8-18GHz. The reflection loss and absorbing peak frequency were calculated from the measured data according to the theory of absorbing wall for different composites. It is found that the reflection loss of CNT/Ferrite/PVDF composites exceeds -10dB at the absorbing peak with a several GHz band width. The present study shows the composites have excellent microwave absorbing characteristics and can be used at different frequencies by controlling the CNTs/Ferrite ratio.

Abstract:The rational modulating of the microstructure in magnetic carbon-based composites is crucial to optimize the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance. It is challenging for EMW absorbers to simultaneously achieve optimal minimum reflection loss (RLmin) and a broadband effective absorption bandwidth (EAB). In this paper, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-modified NiCo/CNTs nanosheets were effectively prepared as a new EMW absorption material utilizing NiCo-containing metal-organic framework (MOF) as a sacrificial precursor. As expected, NiCo/CNTs-650 demonstrated both a broadband EAB of 7.04 GHz and the RLmin of − 58.14 dB at 15.9 GHz with a thickness of 2.0 mm. Furthermore, NiCo/CNTs-650 is capable of achieving 30.2 dB m 2 RSC (radar cross section) reduction under an incident angle of 7° via CST, while NiCo/CNTs-700 15 % achieved a reduction of 39.47 dB m 2 at 0 °. These performances outperformed that other CNTs-decorated MOF-derived hierarchical composites previously described. NiCo/CNTs-650 combines the synergistic effects of magnetic loss provided by zero-dimensional (0D) NiCo alloy, dielectric attenuation realized by one-dimensional (1D) CNTs, and optimized impedance matching through two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets with abundant hierarchical interfaces. These studies provide a specialized route for the manufacture of mixed-dimensional hierarchical EMW absorbents with high performance.

Abstract:Metal–organic framework-derived carbon materials have attracted considerable attention as efficient electromagnetic microwave absorption (EMA) materials due to their tunable structure and components. However, their poor electrical conductivity and restricted pore volume lead to poor impedance matching and high filler content, limiting further applications. Herein, an efficient strategy is proposed for designing hollow CoNi/carbon nanotube (CNT)/hollow carbon nanocage (HCN) composites through Ni2+ etching and subsequent thermal catalysis treatment. The CoNi alloy nanoparticle-encapsulated CNTs are decorated on the surface of HCNs and unique CoNi alloy nanoparticles on the top of the CNT. The introduction of CNTs not only enhances the attenuation capacity of the electromagnetic microwave (EMW) but also effectively maintains the hollow structure of the matrix to optimize impedance matching characteristics and construct abundant heterogeneous interfaces with the CoNi alloy, enhancing the interfacial polarization loss. Benefitting from the hollow structure and a large number of micropores which facilitate impedance matching, the strong conduction loss, and enhanced interfacial polarization loss of the CNT, the dielectric loss of CoNi/CNT/HCNs is effectively improved. CoNi/CNT/HCNs exhibit excellent EMA performance with a minimum reflection loss of −59.5 dB and achieve a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 7.1 GHz at 1.8 mm. This study not only proposes an effective strategy to achieve an efficient EMW absorber with a strong attenuation and broadband but also provides insights into how to maintain the hollow structure of the substrate.

Abstract:Resolving intergroup conflicts is one of humanity’s most important challenges. Social psychologists join this endeavor, not only to understand the psychological foundations of intergroup conflicts but also to suggest interventions that aim to resolve conflicts peacefully. The present article begins by describing a specific type of conflict, namely, an intractable conflict that has distinguishing characteristics. One characteristic that fuels its intractability is the presence of socio-psychological barriers. These barriers result in one-sided information processing that obstructs the penetration of new information to promote peace: Members of a society immersed in an intractable conflict are frozen in their conflict-supporting societal beliefs. The most challenging question is how to unfreeze these beliefs, to overcome these barriers. Various interventions have been designed to promote intergroup peace, within a new taxonomy specifying the nature and goals of the interventions. Peace-promoting interventions can be divided into three categories: (a) interventions that provide contradictory information, (b) interventions that provide information through experiences, and (c) interventions that teach a new skill. Finally, a number of conclusions and limitations stem from the reviewed interventions, suggesting a new line of intervention based on “paradoxical thinking.”
Synthesis and microwave absorbing properties of Ni–Cu ferrite/MWCNTs composites

Abstract:The electromagnetic and microwave absorbing properties of the nickel–copper (Ni–Cu) nanoferrites and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) filled into epoxy resin were investigated in the X band (8.2–12.4 GHz), and the Ni–Cu nanoferrites were synthesized using auto-combustion method. The Ni–Cu ferrite annealing temperature was chosen at 600 °C to obtain the good magnetic properties. When the MWCNTs were added, the values of complex permittivity were enhanced by improving the interfacial polarization. The magnetic properties may be attributed to increase the concentration of Fe3+ ions in octahedral sites, which in turn induces the magnetization of the Ni–Cu ferrite. By changing the MWCNTs content, the optimizing reflection loss bandwidth below −10 dB can reach 3.2 GHz with the absorber thickness of 2.3 mm.

Abstract:Cobalt ferrite/carbon nanotubes (CoFe2O4/CNTs) nanocomposite absorber materials were synthesized by a simple solvothermal method. The effects of CNTs on the microstructure, electromagnetic and microwave absorbing properties of CoFe2O4 were investigated systematically. Morphological analysis showed a network like structure where CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were connected by carbon nanotubes forming large block-shaped wave absorbers. In addition, the reflection loss of CoFe2O4/CNTs reached −37.39 dB at a thickness of 1.7 mm, along with an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.2 GHz, which shows better absorption ability than pure cobalt ferrite. The wide absorption bandwidth of the fabricated CoFe2O4/CNTs nanocomposite at such a thin thickness is highly desirable for microwave absorbers used in various technological applications.
