Abstract:High-efficient microwave absorbers (MAs) with excellent absorption performance and lightweight characteristics have important applications in the military and civil. Here, we propose a dielectric-magnetic hybrid microwave absorber composed of a lattice of dielectric cylinders combined with thin magnetic cylinders backed by a perfect electrical conductor ground plane. The dielectric material that is designed as the dielectric cylinder is based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes-epoxy (MWCNT-EP). The MWCNT-EP is prepared and the S-parameters are measured by the standard transmission/reflection (T/R) method. The thin magnetic cylinder is based on a commercial magnetic material with a height of only 1 mm. With the coaction of magnetic loss and dielectric loss, the proposed microwave absorber’s reflection loss is less than −20 dB under normal incident with a total height of 5 mm in the X-band. Besides, the dielectric-magnetic microwave absorber can maintain good absorption performance with different incident angles and polarizations. In this work, we provide a method to combine the properties of magnetic and dielectric material to construct the MA with high-efficient absorption performance.

Abstract:The rapid development of communication technology has led to severe microwave pollution, which presents a challenge for microwave-absorbing composites. Current research suggests achieving superior microwave absorption requires the use of multi-component operation and ingenious structural design. Consequently, the present study has prepared continuous porous carbon (CPC) materials doped with large amounts of Fe 3 C/Fe nanoparticles (Fe@CPC) using carbonization and acid etching. By balancing the advantages of the above strategies, it is possible to address issues such as poor impedance match, single loss capacity, easy oxidation of magnetic metals/alloys, and the limited absorption bandwidth of conventional absorbing materials at the same time. The material exhibits a minimum reflection loss of −23.2 dB with an efficient absorption range of 5.3 GHz at 1.9 mm at a filler content of just 10 wt% in the paraffin matrix. In this paper, the samples with a continuous porous structure were prepared by a simple method, and the properties were excellent due to the appropriate preparation method and the synergistic effect of the multi-component composite. The porous structure facilitates the presence of a considerable number of active sites, which enables the loading of a substantial quantity of metal ions. Furthermore, nanoparticles are capable of aggregating and dispersing on the surface. This paper presents a theoretical framework for understanding the synergistic effect of microwave radiation through interfacial polarization and micro-scale magnetic interaction. Nevertheless, there are still obstacles to overcome in terms of achieving precise control over the structural design and ensuring the compatible integration of metal components.

Boosted microwave absorption performance of multi-dimensional Fe2O3/CNTsCM@CN assembly by enhanced dielectric relaxation

Abstract:The large-scale preparation of homogeneous multi-dimensional assembly is still believed as an enormous challenge for microwave absorber. Herein, a novel class of Fe2O3/CNTsCM@CN hybrids featured with three-dimensional (3D) hollow structure (du003c6.88 μm) was successfully fabricated by a facile spray-drying and subsequent annealing treatment. The magnetic-dielectric composite microspheres are forcibly-assembled by the 0D γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and 2D N-doped carbon layers. By virtue of the unique design of interface structure and rich electronic conduction paths, excellent microwave absorption (MA) performance has been realized from the Fe2O3/CNTsCM@CN-2. Impressively, the MA value has been enhanced to −51.5 dB with a thin thickness of only 2 mm, and the efficient absorption bandwidth (u003c10 dB) has been broadened to 5.4 GHz with only 10% loading mass, all of which have surpassed most of the art-of-state MA materials. In this heterogeneous system, remarkable multi-interfaces regions have been built by the compressive contacting among CNTs, nanoparticles and N-doped carbon layers, which plays a key role in promoting the interfacial polarization. Electron charge density redistribution observed by electron holography further favors the dielectric relaxation locally around those touching interfaces. Special 3D CNTs network and bridged N-doped carbon layers enriched the electron transportation routes and optimized the conductivity. In addition, spray-dried Fe2O3/CNTsCM@CN absorbers at micron-size exhibit a better electromagnetic and size matching. This work hereby gives deep insight into a novel strategy to construct the multi-dimensional hollow assembly as MA candidates.

Abstract:Materials exhibiting high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption have garnered considerable scientific and technological attention, yet encounter significant challenges. Developing new materials and innovative structural design concepts is crucial for expanding the application field of electromagnetic wave absorption. Particularly, hierarchical structure engineering has emerged as a promising approach to enhance the physical and chemical properties of materials, providing immense potential for creating versatile electromagnetic wave absorption materials. Herein, an exceptional multi-dimensional hierarchical structure was meticulously devised, unleashing the full microwave attenuation capabilities through in situ growth, self-reduction, and multi-heterogeneous interface integration. The hierarchical structure features a three-dimensional carbon framework, where magnetic nanoparticles grow in situ on the carbon skeleton, creating a necklace-like structure. Furthermore, magnetic nanosheets assemble within this framework. Enhanced impedance matching was achieved by precisely adjusting component proportions, and intelligent integration of diverse interfaces bolstered dielectric polarization. The obtain Fe3O4-Fe nanoparticles/carbon nanofibers/Al-Fe3O4-Fe nanosheets composites demonstrated outstanding performance with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) value of - 59.3 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (RL ≤ - 10 dB) extending up to 5.6 GHz at 2.2 mm. These notable accomplishments offer fresh insights into the precision design of high-efficient electromagnetic wave absorption materials.
Conductive-network enhanced microwave absorption performance from carbon coated defect-rich Fe2O3 anchored on multi-wall carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Electron conduction capability plays an extremely important role in the field of electromagnetic wave energy conversion. Herein, a novel dual-conductive-network hybrid material was successfully synthesized, where carbon coated defecr-rich Fe2O3 anchored on multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The entangled MWCNTs serve as a carbon skeleton to support the porous Fe2O3 particle, coating by the ligand-derived conductive carbon. Decorated carbon layer not only acts as a link to connect the Fe2O3 and MWCNTs, but also furnish a new electronic transmission path. Related electromagnetic parameters and electron transportation behavior can be effectively adjusted and controlled via tuning carbon substrate content. Meanwhile, the typical defects and charge density distribution in this C@Fe2O3@MWCNTs system were proved by geometric phase analysis and electron holography technology. This ternary composite can be a potential excellent microwave absorber with a special conductive-netlike structure and multi-interface architecture, benefiting to the conductivity loss and interfacial polarization between porous Fe2O3 microspheres with carbon materials. The optimal reflection value of microwave loss is −49.9 dB at 10.0 GHz with the absorber thickness of 2.0 mm. The as-prepared C@Fe2O3@MWCNTs composites exhibit high-performance microwave absorption and cater to the highly efficient attenuation capability, thin thickness, and lightweight requirements for modern microwave absorption materials.

Abstract:A novel microwave absorber with orderly surface conductive networks in the yolk–shell structure is developed via the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) derivatives. Moderate conduction together with magnetic and dielectric loss contributes to enhanced microwave absorption and attenuation properties. The minimum reflection loss is −66.39 dB, while the effective absorption bandwidth is up to 6.49 GHz. Constructing the adjustable surface conductive networks is an innovation that can achieve a balance between enhanced attenuation and impedance mismatch according to the microwave absorption mechanism. However, the traditional design strategies remain significant challenges in terms of rational selection and controlled growth of conductive components. Herein, a hierarchical construction strategy and quantitative construction technique are employed to introduce conductive metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) derivatives in the classic yolk–shell structure composed of electromagnetic components and the cavity for remarkable optimized performance. Specifically, the surface conductive networks obtained by carbonized ZIF‐67 quantitative construction, together with the Fe3O4 magnetic core and dielectric carbon layer linked by the cavity, achieve the cooperative enhancement of impedance matching optimization and synergistic attenuation in the Fe3O4@C@Co/N‐Doped C (FCCNC) absorber. This interesting design is further verified by experimental results and simulation calculations. The products FCCNC‐2 yield a distinguished minimum reflection loss of −66.39 dB and an exceptional effective absorption bandwidth of 6.49 GHz, indicating that moderate conduction excited via hierarchical and quantitative design can maximize the absorption capability. Furthermore, the proposed versatile methodology of surface assembly paves a new avenue to maximize beneficial conduction effect and manipulate microwave attenuation in MOFs derivatives.

Abstract:The development of carbon materials remains challenging due to a single loss mechanism and an electromagnetic impedance mismatch. Confinement engineering has been shown to provide a chemical microenvironment for the formation of confined object materials in order to regulate the physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials. In this study, we choose lightweight one-dimensional biomass carbon microtubes as the base, for the first time cleverly using the transition metal nickel only on the inner surface of carbon microtubes with an ultra-small CNT array, and construct a composite with a hierarchically magnetic carbon tubular structure (HMCT-I) on the basis of the theoretical analysis of electromagnetic parameters. Thanks to enhanced magnetic loss and the synergy of multiple polarization losses, HMCT-I ultimately shows encouraging microwave-absorption performance, with an ultra-wide effective absorption bandwidth of 8.44 GHz and an ultra-low reflection loss of −77.7 dB. In addition, the reasonable design makes HMCT-I have superior environmental stability, broadening the way for developing practical broadband carbon-based composite absorbers. This work also provides theoretical guidance and innovative ideas for the design of broadband and efficient microwave absorbers.

Hierarchical Carbon Nanotube-Coated Carbon Fiber: Ultra Lightweight, Thin, and Highly Efficient Microwave Absorber

Abstract:Strong EM wave absorption and lightweight are the foremost important factors that drive the real-world applications of the modern microwave absorbers. This work mainly deals with the design of highly efficient microwave absorbers, where a hierarchical carbon nanotube (CNT) forest is first grown on the carbon fiber (CF) through the catalytic chemical vapor deposition method. The hierarchical carbon nanotube grown on the carbon fiber (CNTCF) is then embedded in the epoxy matrix to synthesize lightweight nanocomposites for their use as efficient microwave absorbers. The morphological study shows that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) self-assemble to form a trapping center on the carbon fiber. The electromagnetic characteristics of resultant nanocomposites are investigated exclusively in the X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz) using the network analyzer. The synthesized nanocomposites, containing 0.35 and 0.50 wt % CNTCFs, exhibit excellent microwave absorption properties, which could be attributed to the better impedance matching conditions and high dielectric losses. The reflection loss (RL) of -42.0 dB (99.99% absorption) with -10 dB (90% absorption) and -20 dB (99% absorption) bandwidths of 2.7 and 1.16 GHz, respectively, is achieved for 0.35 wt % CNTCF loading at 2.5 mm thickness. The composite with 0.50 wt % CNTCF loading illustrates substantial absorption efficiency with the RL reaching -24.5 dB (99.65% absorption) at 9.8 GHz and -10 dB bandwidth comprising 84.5% of the entire X band. The excellent microwave properties obtained here are primarily due to the electric dipole polarization, interfacial polarization, and unique trapping center. These trapping centers basically induce multiple reflections and scatterings, which attenuate more microwave energy. This investigation opens a new approach for the development of extremely lightweight, small-thickness, and highly efficient microwave absorbers for X-band applications.

Dandelion-like Carbon Nanotube Assembly Embedded with Closely Separated Co Nanoparticles for High-Performance Microwave Absorption Materials

Abstract:Enhancing the magnetic loss capacity by microstructure design remains a considerable challenge in the microwave absorption field. Herein, a high-performance microwave absorbent is developed by dispersing a considerable amount of magnetic nanoparticles within the dandelion-like carbon nanotube assembly. A controllable fabrication method is further exploited to adjust the distribution feature of these embedded nanomagnets. In such a hierarchical composite, parts of the interaction network among the coupled closely spaced nanomagnets can be frequently broken and rebuilt to intensively dissipate the microwave energy, which is confirmed by electron holography and micromagnetic simulation for the first time. By virtue of this dynamic magnetic coupling network mechanism, the hierarchical C/Co composite acquires the first-rate microwave absorption performance. The maximum reflection loss value reaches as much as -52.9 dB (absorbance >0.99999) and the effective absorption bandwidth (absorbance >0.9) occupies the entire X band. It is believed that the above insightful mechanism provides a new opportunity to lower the density of the magnet-based microwave absorbent as much as possible. Besides, the unique method for dispersing magnetic nanoparticles also broadens the pathway to assemble the hierarchical architecture.
Realizing Optimized Interfacial Polarization and Impedance Matching with CNT-confined Co Nanoparticles in Hollow Carbon Microspheres for Enhanced Microwave Absorption

Abstract:The hollow porous structure with exceptional interfacial effect and customizable internal environment shows significant potential for application as electromagnetic shielding and absorption materials. However, designing hollow porous electromagnetic absorbers with both desirable impedance matching and high loss capability remains a challenge. Herein, 3D hollow porous electromagnetic microspheres were constructed by assembling 0D Co magnetic nanoparticles, 1D carbon nanotubes, and 2D carbon nanosheets. Due to the sufficient sites for Co 2 + riveting, the high loading of magnetic carbon nanotubes (CoNC) and porous carbon spheres formed high-density interfaces, enhancing the interfacial polarization. Furthermore, high-density CoNC were grown in situ on the hollow porous carbon (HPC) microsphere, forming a highly dispersed 3D magnetic network that inhibited the aggregation of magnetic nanoparticles and enhanced magnetic coupling. Therefore, the as-prepared CoNC/HPC microspheres exhibited excellent microwave absorption (MA) performance, with a minimum reflection loss of -33.2 dB and an effective bandwidth of 5.5 GHz at a thickness of only 1.8 mm. The interfacial polarization mechanism for enhanced MA performance was demonstrated by electron holography and density functional theory calculations. Magnetic holography and micromagnetic simulations also revealed magnetic confinement and coupling mechanism. Abstract:Component selection is crucial for microwave absorbents. Multi-component absorbers are increasingly useful and can be prepared through the rational design and control of various electrical, magnetic, and other auxiliary components. In this paper, Ni 3 Fe/NiFe 2 O 4 nanospheres with two-phase magnetism were designed for use as a multi-component absorber. Specifically, a Ni 3 Fe/ NiFe 2 O 4 @SPC composite with 3D networks was successfully fabricated by hydrothermal method, high-temperature carbonization for activation, and electrostatic self-assembly. The contact interface and coupling effect between the two magnetic components can promote the attenuation of electromagnetic waves. Moreover, the introduction of porous carbon successfully inhibits the easy aggregation of the magnetic particles. Impressively, with a filling load of 10 wt%, the optimal RL of the prepared Ni 3 Fe/NiFe 2 O 4 @SPC composite reaches −60.6 dB, and the effective absorption bandwidth is 5.2 GHz at 2 mm. The combination of two magnetic components and porous carbon in this multiphase microwave-absorbing composite demonstrates a feasible strategy for designing efficient microwave absorbers in the future.

Abstract:The advancement of electromagnetic (EM) protection technology promotes the urgent demand for the structural design of electromagnetic functional materials. Here, tadpole-like Fe@SiO2@C-Ni (FSCN) composites with magnetic core–shell and nonspherical hollow architectures through multiple hydrolysis-polymerization reactions are reported. The Fe core and well-distributed Ni nanoparticles greatly promote the magnetic properties of FSCN and construct a multiscale magnetic coupling network. Meanwhile, the multishell composites consisting of carbon shell with Ni decorated possess an abundance of heterogeneous interfaces, generating effective interfacial polarization and relaxation. The hollow feature and the coordination of magnetic and dielectric capacities offer an optimized impedance balance, providing a fundament for the microwaves propagating into the absorber. Owing to the attractive effects resulted from the deliberate tadpole-like structure design, the FSCN composites ensure an effective EM energy conversion at the high-frequency region, which obtain the strongest reflection loss value of −45.2 dB and the extremely broad effective absorption bandwidth of 13.1 GHz. This work provides an important solution for magnetic-dielectric nanostructure design for microwave absorption and energy conversion materials.

Abstract:Fiduciary obligations are imposed by the common law to ensure that a person occupying a societal role with a high potential for the manipulation of vulnerable persons exercises utmost good faith. Australian law has recognised that the doctor-patient relationship, while not wholly fiduciary, has fiduciary aspects. Amongst such duties are those prohibiting sexual or financial abuse of patients or disclosure without express authority of confidential information. One important consequence of attaching such fiduciary duties to the doctor-patient relationship is that the onus of proof falls not upon the vulnerable party (the patient), but upon the doctor (to disprove the allegation). Another is that consent cannot be pleaded as an absolute defence. In this article the authors advocate that the law should now accept that the fiduciary obligations of the doctor-patient relationship extend to creating a legal duty that any adverse health care event be promptly reported to the patient involved. The reasons for creating such a presumption, as well as its elements and exceptions, are explained.

Abstract:The rational design of hierarchical structures with multi-heterogeneous components provides a promising pathway to develop advanced absorbers, but it remains a great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate the construction of three-layered CoFe@C@MnO2 hierarchical nanocubes to address this challenge, which involved the creation of metal organic framework-derived nanocubes consisting of CoFe nanoparticles embedded within porous carbon and the growth of MnO2 nanoparticles on the nanocubes. This delicate design not only enabled the synergistic effects of the magnetic loss of the magnetic CoFe and the intrinsic dielectric losses of the dielectric materials C and MnO2 but also facilitated multiple interface polarization and appropriate impedance matching. Benefiting from these structural and compositional features, the as-synthesized CoFe@C@MnO2 nanocubes achieved a minimum reflection loss of -64 dB at 15.6 GHz with a thickness of 1.3 mm and a maximum absorption bandwidth of 9.2 GHz from 8.8 to 18 GHz for -10 dB at a thickness of 1.6 mm.

Abstract:Magnetic oxides are widely used as electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers. To promote the absorption efficiency, tremendous efforts have been contributed to adjusting the composite, structure, and size of magnetic loss materials. Employing carbon materials (CNTs, CF, graphene, PANI) is an efficient way to improve the dielectric loss of the matrix. Anchoring the tiny-monodispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) onto the lightweight multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) leads to improve dielectric loss and impedance matching characteristic. Magnetic Fe3O4 NPs along the one-dimensional nanotubes direction play a good synergetic role with MWCNTs due to the interfacial strong chemical and structure bonding. The as-synthesized Fe3O4/MWCNTs nanocomposites exhibit efficient EM wave absorption characteristics (R-L av-10dB) with a maximum reflection loss of -63.64dB at 12.08GHz and a diminutive thickness of only 1.6mm. The magnetic Fe3O4 NPs show strong chemical and structure bonding with the one-dimensional MWCNTs. This work may show a way to broaden the application of such kinds of lightweight high-performance absorbing materials frameworks.
Hollow microspheres of polypyrrole/magnetite/carbon nanotubes by spray-dry as an electromagnetic synergistic microwave absorber

Abstract:Combining dielectric and magnetic components has been regarded as a promising way to develop functional materials with outstanding microwave absorption (MA) performance. However, it remains a tremendous challenge to assemble multi components into an integrated composite with suitable impedance matching via conventional wet chemical methods. Herein, ternary polypyrrole@Fe3O4/carbon nanotubes (PPy@Fe3O4/CNTs) microspheres with special hollow structure were successfully fabricated via a facile spray-dry method, which can realize rational assembly of magnetic and dielectric components. Hollow PPy@Fe3O4/CNTs spheres simultaneously avoid the agglomeration of magnetic particles while achieve the synergistic absorption. The maximum reflection loss of PPy@Fe3O4/CNTs absorber reached -51.8 dB at 8.8 GHz at the thickness of 2.38 mm. The relationship among components, structure and MA performance was also studied. As MA units, multi-component PPy@Fe3O4/CNTs microspheres effectively combine conductive polymer (PPy), strong magnetic Fe3O4 and high-conductivity CNTs. Thus, the composite gains the advantage of complementation of dielectric, magnetic and conductive loss. Meanwhile, reasonable assembling of different components constructs abundant interfaces which can enhance dielectric polarization and hence improve absorption capacity. The special structure optimizes the distribution of CNTs, helping the composites to achieve better impedance matching. Overall, this work introduces an excellent microwave absorber and gives a new thought of material design. (C) 2021 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Structural and Carbonized Design of 1D FeNi/C Nanofibers with Conductive Network to Optimize Electromagnetic Parameters and Absorption Abilities

Abstract:The optimized electromagnetic (EM) parameters are highly indispensable for outstanding microwave absorbers. Generally speaking, it is very necessary to suitably improve permittivity and permeability of the materials. The combination of magnetic/dielectric materials is a good choice. Herein, the irregular shaped FeNi/C composites were synthesized in N-2, atmosphere with unsatisfied EM parameters. To further optimize EM parameters and enhance microwave absorption abilities, constructing one-dimensional (ID) structure is also an excellent scheme. ID FeNi/C nanofibers were successfully obtained by electrospinning technology combined with heat treatment. Enhanced microwave absorption abilities can be fulfilled by conductive network structure, better dielectric loss, and stronger interface polarization intensity. Moreover, carbonized time toward nanofibers plays a key role in microwave absorption, which could influence complex permittivity and dielectric loss of materials. It is found that FeNi/C nanofibers with highly carbonized degree display better microwave absorbing properties. The reflection loss (RL) values less than -10 dB can be observed in 12.8-17.2 GHz (a broad bandwidth of 4.4 GHz) with an absorber thickness of only 1.8 mm. The absorber with a thickness of 2.7 mm has the minimum RL value of -24.8 dB at 9.4 GHz. In this regard, these nanofibers are very likely to be used as EM-wave absorbers in practical application. Furthermore, this work provides a useful strategy to optimize electromagnetic parameters and absorption abilities of metal/carbon absorbers. It may promote the development of 1D metal/carbon composites in microwave absorption field.

Abstract:Hierarchical structures with synergistic dielectric-magnetic compositions are highly desired for electromagnetic wave absorption and interference shielding applications. Fabricating lightweight and high-performance electromagnetic protection composites with additional functions are demanded to suppress severe electromagnetic radiation and interference pollution. Herein, a unique three-dimensional hierarchical structure consisting of 1D multi-walled carbon nanotubes anchored on 1D core-sheath microrods are rationally proposed via electrostatic self-assembly and hydrothermal strategy as well as subsequent thermal-catalysis treatment. The multi-walled carbon nanotubes encapsulated with magnetic CoNi nanoparticles are immobilized onto core-sheath microrods matrix, constructing effective 1D/1D electron migration bridges and the uniformly dispersed magnetic component to facilitate magnetic coupling effect. Consequently, profiting from the optimized impedance matching, enhanced conduction loss, dielectric polarization, and magnetic loss, the as-prepared sample shows an outstanding absorption capacity with reflection loss value of −56.8 dB and X-band full absorption. When used as electromagnetic shielding materials, the composites exhibit exceptional electromagnetic interference shielding properties. In addition, the upgraded mechanical strength, remarkable voltage-driven Joule heating and superhydrophobic properties endow the absorbers with multi-scenario adaptability and long life-time applications. This work provides well-designed hierarchical structures for high-performance electromagnetic absorbing and shielding with the great prospect of multifunctional applications.

Abstract:In applications such as aerospace, automotive, and mobile devices, reduction of weight is crucial for enhancing the performance, minimizing the energy expenditure, and extending the operational lifespan. Lightweight electromagnetic wave-absorbing materials offer a viable solution to achieve these objectives without compromising the absorption efficiency. Additionally, the cost-effective production of these materials facilitates large-scale manufacturing, thereby broadening the application scope of electromagnetic wave absorption technology. In this study, an ultralight hierarchical biomass-derived porous carbon (BPC)/Co/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite was prepared highly efficiently by employing a microwave plasma-assisted reduced chemical vapor deposition technique. Taking advantage of the renewable wood, the BPC served as the matrix, in which CNTs with magnetic Co nanoparticles were grown on the surface of the BPC. The hierarchical structure with zero-dimensional Co nanocrystals, one-dimensional CNTs, and three-dimensional BPC matrix could fertilize the loss mechanism availably, which was rationally endowed with enhanced electromagnetic wave dissipation capacity under a low loading content. Consequently, the composite demonstrated a remarkable minimum reflection loss of -78.7 dB at a thin matching thickness of 1.9 mm despite having a filler content as minimal as 10 wt %. Furthermore, the radar cross-section could be significantly reduced to 21.5 dB m(2) when the detection angle was fixed at 20 degrees. This work offers insights into designing and fabricating next-generation ultralight electromagnetic wave absorbers through a cost-effective, ecofriendly, and efficient approach.
