Abstract:We construct projective covers of irreducible V -modules in the category of grading-restricted generalized V -modules when V is a vertex operator algebra satisfying the following conditions: 1. V is C 1 -cofinite in the sense of Li. 2. There exists a positive integer N such that the differences between the real parts of the lowest conformal weights of irreducible V -modules are bounded by N and such that the associative algebra A N ( V ) is finite dimensional. This result shows that the category of grading-restricted generalized V -modules is a finite abelian category over C . Using the existence of projective covers, we prove that if such a vertex operator algebra V also satisfies Condition 3 that irreducible V -modules are R -graded and C 1 -cofinite in the sense of the author, then the category of grading-restricted generalized V -modules is closed under operations ⧅ P ( z ) for z ∈ C × . We also prove that other conditions for applying the logarithmic tensor product theory developed by Lepowsky, Zhang and the author hold. Consequently, for such V , this category has a natural structure of braided tensor category. In particular, when V is of positive energy and C 2 -cofinite, Conditions 1–3 are satisfied and thus all the conclusions hold.

Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Abstract:We introduce the main concepts and announce the main results in a theory of tensor products for module categories for a vertex operator algebra. This theory is being developed in a series of papers including hep-th 9309076 and hep-th 9309159. The theory applies in particular to any ``rational'' vertex operator algebra for which products of intertwining operators are known to be convergent in the appropriate regions, including the vertex operator algebras associated with the WZNW models, the minimal models and the moonshine module for the Monster. In this paper, we provide background and motivation; we present the main constructions and properties of the tensor product operation associated with a particular element of a suitable moduli space of spheres with punctures and local coordinates; we introduce the notion of ``vertex tensor category,'' analogous to the notion of tensor category but based on this moduli space; and we announce the results that the category of modules for a vertex operator algebra of the type mentioned above admits a natural vertex tensor category structure, and also that any vertex tensor category naturally produces a braided tensor category structure.

An algebraic theory for logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondences

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{U}$ be a braided tensor category, typically unknown, complicated and in particular non-semisimple. We characterize $\mathcal{U}$ under the assumption that there exists a commutative algebra $A$ in $\mathcal{U}$ with certain properties: Let $\mathcal{C}$ be the category of local $A$-modules in $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ the category of $A$-modules in $\mathcal{U}$, which are in our set-up usually much simpler categories than $\mathcal{U}$. Then we can characterize $\mathcal{U}$ as a relative Drinfeld center $\mathcal{Z}_\mathcal{C}(\mathcal{B})$ and $\mathcal{B}$ as representations of a certain Hopf algebra inside $\mathcal{C}$. In particular this allows us to reduce braided tensor equivalences to the knowledge of abelian equivalences, e.g. if we already know that $\mathcal{U}$ is abelian equivalent to the category of modules of some quantum group $U_q$ or some generalization thereof, and if $\mathcal{C}$ is braided equivalent to a category of graded vector spaces, and if $A$ has a certain form, then we already obtain a braided tensor equivalence between $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathrm{Rep}(U_q)$. A main application of our theory is to prove logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondences, that is, equivalences of braided tensor categories of representations of vertex algebras and of quantum groups. Here, the algebra $A$ and the corresponding category $\mathcal{C}$ are a-priori given by a free-field realization of the vertex algebra and by a Nichols algebra. We illustrate this in those examples where the representation theory of the vertex algebra is well enough understood. In particular we prove the conjectured correspondences between the singlet vertex algebra $\mathcal{M}(p)$ and the unrolled small quantum groups of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ at $2p$-th root of unity. Another new example is the Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondence for $\mathfrak{gl}_{1|1}$.

On Deformation Theory in Higher Logarithmic Geometry

Abstract:We initiate the study of deformation theory in the context of derived and higher log geometry. After reconceptualizing the "exactification"-procedures in ordinary log geometry in terms of Quillen's approach to the cotangent complex, we construct an "exactified tangent bundle" over the category of log ring spectra. The fibers recover the categories of modules over the underlying ring spectra, and the resulting cotangent complex functor specializes to log topological André--Quillen homology on each fiber. As applications, we characterize log square-zero extensions and derive a log variant of étale rigidity, applicable to some tamely ramified extensions of ring spectra.

Abstract:A theory of tensor products of modules for a vertex operator algebra is being developed by Lepowsky and the author. To use this theory, one first has to verify that the vertex operator algebra satisfies certain conditions. We show in the present paper that for any vertex operator algebra containing a vertex operator subalgebra isomorphic to a tensor product algebra of minimal Virasoro vertex operator algebras (vertex operator algebras associated to minimal models), the tensor product theory can be applied. In particular, intertwining operators for such a vertex operator algebra satisfy the (nonmeromorphic) commutativity (locality) and the (nonmeromorphic) associativity (operator product expansion). Combined with a result announced by Lepowsky and the author in 1994, the results of the present paper also show that the category of modules for such a vertex operator algebra has a natural structure of a braided tensor category. In particular, for any pairp,qof relatively prime positive integers larger than 1, the category of minimal modules of central charge 1−6[(p−q)2/pq] for the Virasoro algebra has a natural structure of a braided tensor category.

Abstract:Based on the logarithmic algebraic geometry and the theory of Deligne systems, we define an abelian category of $\ell$-adic sheaves with weight filtrations on a logarithmic scheme over a finite field, which is similar to the category of variations of mixed Hodge structure. We consider asymptotic behaviors and simple cases of higher direct images of objects of this category. This category is closely related to the monodromy-weight conjecture.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebra without nonzero elements of negative weights. We prove the conjecture that the spaces spanned by analytic extensions of pseudo-$q$-traces ($q=e^{2\pi i\tau}$) shifted by $-\frac{c}{24}$ of products of geometrically-modified (logarithmic) intertwining operators among grading-restricted generalized $V$-modules are invariant under modular transformations. The convergence and analytic extension result needed to formulate this conjecture and some consequences on such shifted pseudo-$q$-traces were proved by Fiordalisi in [F1] and [F2] using the method developed in [H2]. The method that we use to prove this conjecture is based on the theory of the associative algebras $A^{N}(V)$ for $N\in \mathbb{N}$, their graded modules and their bimodules introduced and studied by the author in [H8] and [H9]. This modular invariance result gives a construction of $C_2$-cofinite genus-one logarithmic conformal field theories from the corresponding genus-zero logarithmic conformal field theories.

Abstract:We show that if $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ are locally finite abelian categories of modules for vertex operator algebras $U$ and $V$, respectively, then the Deligne tensor product of $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ can be realized as a certain category $\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V})$ of modules for the tensor product vertex operator algebra $U\otimes V$. We also show that if $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ admit the braided tensor category structure of Huang-Lepowsky-Zhang, then $\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V})$ does as well under mild additional conditions, and that this braided tensor structure is equivalent to the natural braided tensor structure on a Deligne tensor product category. These results hold in particular when $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ are the categories of $C_1$-cofinite $U$- and $V$-modules, if these categories are closed under contragredients, in which case we show that $\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V})$ is the category of $C_1$-cofinite $U\otimes V$-modules. If $U$ and $V$ are $\mathbb{N}$-graded and $C_2$-cofinite, then we may take $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ to be the categories of all grading-restricted generalized $U$- and $V$-modules, respectively. Thus as an application, if the tensor categories of all modules for two $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebras are rigid, then so is the tensor category of all modules for the tensor product vertex operator algebra. We use this to prove that the representation categories of the even subalgebras of the symplectic fermion vertex operator superalgebras are non-semisimple modular tensor categories.

Abstract:We develop the theory of ``virtual morphisms'' in logarithmic algebraic geometry, introduced by Howell. It allows one to give algebro-geometric meaning to various useful maps of topological spaces that do not correspond to morphisms of (log) schemes in the classical sense, while retaining functoriality of key constructions. In particular, we explain how virtual morphisms provide a natural categorical home for Deligne's theory of tangential basepoints: the latter are simply the virtual morphisms from a point. We also extend Howell's results on the functoriality of Betti and de Rham cohomology. Using this framework, we lift the topological operad of little $2$-disks to an operad in log schemes over the integers, whose virtual points are isomorphism classes of stable marked curves of genus zero equipped with a tangential basepoint. The gluing of such curves along marked points is performed using virtual morphisms that transport tangential basepoints around the curves. This builds on Vaintrob's analogous construction for framed little disks, for which the classical notion of morphism in logarithmic geometry sufficed. In this way, we obtain a direct algebro-geometric proof of the formality of the little disks operad, following the strategy envisioned by Beilinson. Furthermore, Bar-Natan's parenthesized braids naturally appear as the fundamental groupoids of our moduli spaces, with all virtual basepoints defined over the integers.

Logarithmic tautological rings of the moduli spaces of curves

Abstract:We define the logarithmic tautological rings of the moduli spaces of Deligne-Mumford stable curves (together with a set of additive generators lifting the decorated strata classes of the standard tautological rings). While these algebras are infinite dimensional, a connection to polyhedral combinatorics via a new theory of homological piecewise polynomials allows an effective study. A complete calculation is given in genus 0 via the algebra of piecewise polynomials on the cone stack of the associated Artin fan (lifting Keel's presentation of the Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$). Counterexamples to the simplest generalizations in genus 1 are presented. We show, however, that the structure of the log tautological rings is determined by the complete knowledge of all relations in the standard tautological rings of the moduli spaces of curves. In particular, Pixton's conjecture concerning relations in the standard tautological rings lifts to a complete conjecture for relations in the log tautological rings of the moduli spaces of curves. Several open questions are discussed. We develop the entire theory of logarithmic tautological classes in the context of arbitrary smooth normal crossings pairs $(X,D)$ with explicit formulas for intersection products. As a special case, we give an explicit set of additive generators of the full logarithmic Chow ring of $(X,D)$ in terms of Chow classes on the strata of $X$ and piecewise polynomials on the cone stack.

Abstract:We apply our previous results on ``saturated descent'' to express a wide range of logarithmic cohomology theories in terms of the infinite root stack. Examples include the log cotangent complex, Rognes' log topological cyclic homology, and Nygaard-complete log prismatic cohomology. As applications, we show that the Nygaard-completion of the site-theoretic log prismatic cohomology coincides with the definition arising from log ${\rm TC}$, and we establish a log version of the ${\rm TC}$-variant of the Beilinson fiber square of Antieau--Mathew--Morrow--Nikolaus.

Abstract:Matrix logarithmic norm is an important quantity, which characterize the stability of linear dynamical systems. We propose the logarithmic norms for tensors and tensor pairs, and extend some classical results from the matrix case. Moreover, the explicit forms of several tensor logarithmic norms and semi-norms are also derived. Employing the tensor logarithmic norms, we bound the real parts of all the eigenvalues of a complex tensor and study the stability of a class of nonlinear dynamical systems.
