Abstract:We introduce the main concepts and announce the main results in a theory of tensor products for module categories for a vertex operator algebra. This theory is being developed in a series of papers including hep-th 9309076 and hep-th 9309159. The theory applies in particular to any ``rational'' vertex operator algebra for which products of intertwining operators are known to be convergent in the appropriate regions, including the vertex operator algebras associated with the WZNW models, the minimal models and the moonshine module for the Monster. In this paper, we provide background and motivation; we present the main constructions and properties of the tensor product operation associated with a particular element of a suitable moduli space of spheres with punctures and local coordinates; we introduce the notion of ``vertex tensor category,'' analogous to the notion of tensor category but based on this moduli space; and we announce the results that the category of modules for a vertex operator algebra of the type mentioned above admits a natural vertex tensor category structure, and also that any vertex tensor category naturally produces a braided tensor category structure.

Abstract:We construct projective covers of irreducible V -modules in the category of grading-restricted generalized V -modules when V is a vertex operator algebra satisfying the following conditions: 1. V is C 1 -cofinite in the sense of Li. 2. There exists a positive integer N such that the differences between the real parts of the lowest conformal weights of irreducible V -modules are bounded by N and such that the associative algebra A N ( V ) is finite dimensional. This result shows that the category of grading-restricted generalized V -modules is a finite abelian category over C . Using the existence of projective covers, we prove that if such a vertex operator algebra V also satisfies Condition 3 that irreducible V -modules are R -graded and C 1 -cofinite in the sense of the author, then the category of grading-restricted generalized V -modules is closed under operations ⧅ P ( z ) for z ∈ C × . We also prove that other conditions for applying the logarithmic tensor product theory developed by Lepowsky, Zhang and the author hold. Consequently, for such V , this category has a natural structure of braided tensor category. In particular, when V is of positive energy and C 2 -cofinite, Conditions 1–3 are satisfied and thus all the conclusions hold.

Abstract:A theory of tensor products of modules for a vertex operator algebra is being developed by Lepowsky and the author. To use this theory, one first has to verify that the vertex operator algebra satisfies certain conditions. We show in the present paper that for any vertex operator algebra containing a vertex operator subalgebra isomorphic to a tensor product algebra of minimal Virasoro vertex operator algebras (vertex operator algebras associated to minimal models), the tensor product theory can be applied. In particular, intertwining operators for such a vertex operator algebra satisfy the (nonmeromorphic) commutativity (locality) and the (nonmeromorphic) associativity (operator product expansion). Combined with a result announced by Lepowsky and the author in 1994, the results of the present paper also show that the category of modules for such a vertex operator algebra has a natural structure of a braided tensor category. In particular, for any pairp,qof relatively prime positive integers larger than 1, the category of minimal modules of central charge 1−6[(p−q)2/pq] for the Virasoro algebra has a natural structure of a braided tensor category.

Abstract:We show that if $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ are locally finite abelian categories of modules for vertex operator algebras $U$ and $V$, respectively, then the Deligne tensor product of $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ can be realized as a certain category $\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V})$ of modules for the tensor product vertex operator algebra $U\otimes V$. We also show that if $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ admit the braided tensor category structure of Huang-Lepowsky-Zhang, then $\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V})$ does as well under mild additional conditions, and that this braided tensor structure is equivalent to the natural braided tensor structure on a Deligne tensor product category. These results hold in particular when $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ are the categories of $C_1$-cofinite $U$- and $V$-modules, if these categories are closed under contragredients, in which case we show that $\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V})$ is the category of $C_1$-cofinite $U\otimes V$-modules. If $U$ and $V$ are $\mathbb{N}$-graded and $C_2$-cofinite, then we may take $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ to be the categories of all grading-restricted generalized $U$- and $V$-modules, respectively. Thus as an application, if the tensor categories of all modules for two $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebras are rigid, then so is the tensor category of all modules for the tensor product vertex operator algebra. We use this to prove that the representation categories of the even subalgebras of the symplectic fermion vertex operator superalgebras are non-semisimple modular tensor categories.

An algebraic theory for logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondences

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{U}$ be a braided tensor category, typically unknown, complicated and in particular non-semisimple. We characterize $\mathcal{U}$ under the assumption that there exists a commutative algebra $A$ in $\mathcal{U}$ with certain properties: Let $\mathcal{C}$ be the category of local $A$-modules in $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ the category of $A$-modules in $\mathcal{U}$, which are in our set-up usually much simpler categories than $\mathcal{U}$. Then we can characterize $\mathcal{U}$ as a relative Drinfeld center $\mathcal{Z}_\mathcal{C}(\mathcal{B})$ and $\mathcal{B}$ as representations of a certain Hopf algebra inside $\mathcal{C}$. In particular this allows us to reduce braided tensor equivalences to the knowledge of abelian equivalences, e.g. if we already know that $\mathcal{U}$ is abelian equivalent to the category of modules of some quantum group $U_q$ or some generalization thereof, and if $\mathcal{C}$ is braided equivalent to a category of graded vector spaces, and if $A$ has a certain form, then we already obtain a braided tensor equivalence between $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathrm{Rep}(U_q)$. A main application of our theory is to prove logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondences, that is, equivalences of braided tensor categories of representations of vertex algebras and of quantum groups. Here, the algebra $A$ and the corresponding category $\mathcal{C}$ are a-priori given by a free-field realization of the vertex algebra and by a Nichols algebra. We illustrate this in those examples where the representation theory of the vertex algebra is well enough understood. In particular we prove the conjectured correspondences between the singlet vertex algebra $\mathcal{M}(p)$ and the unrolled small quantum groups of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ at $2p$-th root of unity. Another new example is the Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondence for $\mathfrak{gl}_{1|1}$.

Semisimplicity of module categories of certain affine vertex operator superalgebras

Abstract:In this paper, we show Kazhdan-Lusztig categories, that is, the categories of lower bounded generalized weight modules for certain affine vertex operator superalgebras that are locally finite modules of the underlying finite dimensional Lie superalgebra, are semisimple. Those are all representation categories of affine vertex operator superalgebras at conformal but non admissible levels. As a consequence, the categories of finite length generalized modules for these affine vertex operator superalgebras have braided tensor category structures.

The non-semisimple Kazhdan-Lusztig category for affine $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ at admissible levels

Abstract:We show that Kazhdan and Lusztig's category $KL^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ of modules for the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2$ at an admissible level $k$, equivalently the category of finite-length grading-restricted generalized modules for the universal affine vertex operator algebra $V^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$, is a braided tensor category. Although this tensor category is not rigid, we show that the subcategory of all rigid objects in $KL^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ is equal to the subcategory of all projective objects, and that every simple module in $KL^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ has a projective cover. Moreover, we show that the full subcategory of projective objects in $KL^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ is monoidal equivalent to the category of tilting modules for quantum $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ at the root of unity $\zeta=e^{\pi i/(k+2)}$. Using this, we establish a universal property of the tensor category $KL^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$, and as an application, we prove a weak Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondence, that is, we obtain an exact essentially surjective (but not full or faithful) tensor functor from $KL^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ to the category of finite dimensional weight modules for the quantum group associated to $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ at the root of unity $\zeta $. We also use the universal property to classify the categories $KL^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ up to (braided) tensor equivalence and to obtain a tensor-categorical version of quantum Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction, that is, we construct a braided tensor functor from $KL^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ to a category of modules for the Virasoro algebra at central charge $1-\frac{6(k+1)^2}{k+2}$.

Abstract:Assumed data streams from a delayed choice gedanken experiment must satisfy a Bell's identity independently of locality assumptions. The violation of Bell's inequality by assumed correlations of identical form among these data streams implies that they cannot all result from statistically equivalent variables of a homogeneous process. This is consistent with both the requirements of arithmetic and distinctions between commuting and noncommuting observables in quantum mechanics. Neglect of these distinctions implies a logical loophole in the conventional interpretation of Bell's inequalities.

Kazhdan-Lusztig Correspondence for Vertex Operator Superalgebras from Abelian Gauge Theories

Abstract:We prove the Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondence for a class of vertex operator superalgebras which, via the work of Costello-Gaiotto, arise as boundary VOAs of topological B twist of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ abelian gauge theories. This means that we show equivalences of braided tensor categories of modules of certain affine vertex superalgebras and corresponding quantum supergroups. We build on the work of Creutzig-Lentner-Rupert to this large class of VOAs and extend it since in our case the categories don't have projective objectives and objects can have arbitrary Jordan Hölder length. Our correspondence significantly improves the understanding of the braided tensor category of line defects associated to this class of TQFT, by realizing line defects as modules of a Hopf algebra. In the process, we prove a case of the conjecture of Semikhatov-Tipunin, relating logarithmic CFTs to Nichols algebras of screening operators.

Abstract: In this paper, we give a unified construction of vertex algebras arising from infinite-dimensional Lie algebras, including the affine Kac-Moody algebras, Virasoro algebras, Heisenberg algebras and their higher rank analogs, orbifolds and deformations. We define a notion of what we call quasi vertex Lie algebra to unify these Lie algebras. Starting from any (maximal) quasi vertex Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we construct a corresponding vertex Lie algebra ${\mathfrak{g}}_0$, and establish a canonical isomorphism between the category of restricted $\mathfrak{g}$-modules and that of equivariant $\phi$-coordinated quasi $V_{{\mathfrak{g}}_0}$-modules, where $V_{{\mathfrak{g}}_0}$ is the universal enveloping vertex algebra of ${\mathfrak{g}}_0$. This unified all the previous constructions of vertex algebras from infinite-dimensional Lie algebras and shed light on the way to associate vertex algebras with Lie algebras.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we study nullity-[math] toroidal extended affine Lie algebras in the context of vertex algebras and their [math]-coordinated modules. Among the main results, we introduce a variant of toroidal extended affine Lie algebras, associate vertex algebras to the variant Lie algebras, and establish a canonical connection between modules for toroidal extended affine Lie algebras and [math]-coordinated modules for these vertex algebras. Furthermore, by employing some results of Billig, we obtain an explicit realization of a class of irreducible modules for the variant Lie algebras.

Abstract:Conformal blocks, physical quantities of chiral 2d conformal field theory, are sheaves on the configuration spaces of the complex plane, which are mathematically formulated in terms of a vertex operator algebra, its modules and associated D-modules. We show that the operad of fundamental groupoids of the configuration spaces, the parenthesized braid operad, acts on the conformal blocks by the monodromy representation. More precisely, let $V$ be a vertex operator algebra with $V=\bigoplus_{n\geq 0} V_n$, $\dim V_n <\infty$, $V_0=\mathbb{C}\bf{1}$ and $V\text{-mod}_{\mathrm{f.g}}$ the category of $V$-modules $M$ such that $M$ is $C_1$-cofinite and the dual module $M^\vee$ is a finitely generated $V$-module. We show that the parenthesized braid operad weakly 2-categorically acts on $V\text{-mod}_{\mathrm{f.g}}$, and consequently $V\text{-mod}_{\mathrm{f.g}}$ has a structure of the (unital) pseudo-braided category. Moreover, if $V$ is rational and $C_2$-cofinite, then $V\text{-mod}_{\mathrm{f.g}}$ is a balanced braided tensor category, which gives an alternative proof of a result of Huang and Lepowsky.

Abstract:We give an abstract construction, based on the Belavin-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov equations, of a family of vertex operator algebras of rank $26$ associated to the modified regular representations of the Virasoro algebra. The vertex operators are obtained from the tensor products of intertwining operators for a pair of Virasoro algebras. We explicitly determine the structure coefficients that yield the axioms of VOAs. In the process of our construction, we obtain new hypergeometric identities.
Rationality of Lorentzian Lattice CFTs And The Associated Modular Tensor Category

Abstract:We classify the irreducible modules of a rational Lorentzian lattice vertex operator algebra (LLVOA) based on an even, self-dual Lorentzian lattice $\Lambda\subset\mathbb{R}^{m,n}$ of signature $(m,n)$. We show that the set of isomorphism classes of irreducible modules of the LLVOA are in one-to-one correspondence with the equivalence classes $\Lambda_0^\circ/\Lambda_0$ for a certain subset $\Lambda_0^\circ\subset\mathbb{R}^{m,n}$ and a full rank sublattice $\Lambda_0\subset\Lambda$. We also classify the intertwining operators between the modules and calculate the fusion rules. We then describe the standard construction of modular tensor category (MTC) associated to rational LLCFTs. We explicitly construct the modular data and braiding and fusing matrices for the MTC. As a concrete example, we show that the LLCFT based on a certain even, self-dual Lorentzian lattice of signature $(m, n)$, with $m$ even, realizes the $D(m \bmod 8)$ level 1 Kac-Moody MTC.

Abstract:In this paper, we associate the TKK algebra $\widehat{\mathcal{G}}(\mathcal{J})$ with vertex algebras through twisted modules. Firstly, we prove that for any complex number $\ell$, the category of restricted $\widehat{\mathcal{G}}(\mathcal{J})$-modules of level $\ell$ is canonically isomorphic to the category of $\sigma$-twisted $V_{\widehat{\mathcal{C}_{\mathfrak g}}}(\ell,0)$-modules, where $V_{\widehat{\mathcal{C}_{\mathfrak g}}}(\ell,0)$ is a vertex algebra arising from the toroidal Lie algebra of type $C_2$ and $\sigma$ is an isomorphism of $V_{\widehat{\mathcal{C}_{\mathfrak g}}}(\ell,0)$ induced from the involution of this toroidal Lie algebra. Secondly, we prove that for any nonnegative integer $\ell$, the integrable restricted $\widehat{\mathcal{G}}(\mathcal{J})$-modules of level $\ell$ are exactly the $\sigma$-twisted modules for the quotient vertex algebra $L_{\widehat{\mathcal{C}_{\mathfrak g}}}(\ell,0)$ of $V_{\widehat{\mathcal{C}_{\mathfrak g}}}(\ell,0)$. Finally, we classify the irreducible $\frac{1}{2}{\mathbb{N}}$-graded $\sigma$-twisted $L_{\widehat{\mathcal{C}_{\mathfrak g}}}(\ell,0)$-modules.

Affine Structures on Lie Groupoids

Abstract:Affine structures on a Lie groupoid, including affine k-vector fields, k-forms and (p,q)-tensors are studied. We show that the space of affine structures is a 2-vector space over the space of multiplicative structures. Moreover, the space of affine multivector fields has a natural graded strict Lie 2-algebra structure and affine (1,1)-tensors constitute a strict monoidal category. Such higher structures can be seen as the categorification of multiplicative structures on a Lie groupoid.
