Abstract:In this paper we describe some recent results on the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We surveyed new and classical metrics on the moduli spaces of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and their geometric properties. We then discussed the Mumford goodness and generalized goodness of various metrics on the moduli spaces and their deformation invariance. By combining with the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric we derive various consequences such that the infinitesimal rigidity, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the log Chern number computations.

Abstract:We briefly survey our recent results about the Mumford goodness of several canonical metrics on the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces, including the Weil-Petersson metric, the Ricci metric, the Perturbed Ricci metric and the Kahler-Einstein metric. We prove the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric. As applications of these results we deduce certain important results about the L 2 -cohomology groups of the logarithmic tangent bundle over the compactified moduli spaces.

Surveys in Differential Geometry

Abstract:In this paper we briefly discuss some of our recent results in the study of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. It is naturally divided into two parts, one about the differential geometric aspect, another on the topological aspect of the moduli spaces. To understand the geometry of the moduli spaces we introduced new metrics, studied in detail all of the known classical complete metrics, especially the Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we proved that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is strictly stable in the sense of Mumford. The topological results we obtained were motivated by conjectures from string theory. We will describe in this part our proofs by localization method of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its two partition analogue as well as the theory of topological vertex and the simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and the Witten conjecture. The applications of these formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and string duality will also be mentioned.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of log R-maps, and develop a proper moduli stack of stable log R-maps in the case of a hybrid gauged linear sigma model. Two virtual cycles (canonical and reduced) are constructed for these moduli stacks. The main results are two comparison theorems relating the reduced virtual cycle to the cosection localized virtual cycle, as well as the reduced virtual cycle to the canonical virtual cycle. This sets the foundation of a new technique for computing higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants of complete intersections.

Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Abstract:Abstract We show the smoothness over the affine line of the Hodge moduli space of logarithmic ‐connections of coprime rank and degree on a smooth projective curve with geometrically integral fibers over an arbitrary Noetherian base. When the base is a field, we also prove that the Hodge moduli space is geometrically integral. Along the way, we prove the same results for the corresponding moduli spaces of logarithmic Higgs bundles and of logarithmic connections. We use smoothness to derive specialization isomorphisms on the étale cohomology rings of these moduli spaces; this includes the special case when the base is of mixed characteristic. In the special case where the base is a separably closed field of positive characteristic, we show that these isomorphisms are filtered isomorphisms for the perverse filtrations associated with the corresponding Hitchin‐type morphisms.

Logarithmic geometry beyond fs

Abstract:We develop the foundations of logarithmic structures beyond the standard finiteness conditions. The motivation is the study of semistable models over general valuation rings. The key new notion is that of a morphism of finite presentation up to saturation (sfp), which is one that is qcqs and which is locally isomorphic to the saturated base change of a finitely presented morphism between fs log schemes. As in the case of schemes, sfp maps can (locally on the base) be approximated by maps between fs log schemes of finite type over $\mathbb{Z}$. Based on sfp maps, we define smooth, étale, and Kummer étale maps. Importantly, the maps of schemes underlying such maps are no longer of finite type in general, though surprisingly they are if the base is the spectrum of a valuation ring with algebraically closed field of fractions. These foundations allow us to extend beyond the fs case the theory of the Kummer étale site and of the Kummer étale fundamental group.

Logarithmic moduli of roots of line bundles on curves

Abstract:We use the theory of logarithmic line bundles to construct compactifications of spaces of roots of a line bundle on a family of curves, generalising work of a number of authors. This runs via a study of the torsion in the tropical and logarithmic jacobians (recently constructed by Molcho and Wise). Our moduli space carries a `double ramification cycle' measuring the locus where the given root is isomorphic to the trivial bundle, and we give a tautological formula for this class in the language of piecewise polynomial functions (as recently developed by Molcho-Pandharipande-Schmitt and Holmes-Schwarz).

Curvatures of Moduli Space of Curves and Applications

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:A classical problem in algebraic geometry is to construct smooth algebraic varieties with prescribed properties. In the approach via smoothings, one first constructs a degenerate scheme with the prescribed properties, and then shows the existence of a smooth variety degenerating to this scheme. Logarithmic geometry has given important new impulses to the second step of this approach, which we explore in this book. Degenerations, in particular in the context of mirror symmetry, often enjoy similar formal properties as smooth morphisms once considered from the logarithmic perspective. Logarithmic deformation theory has therefore become an effective tool for the construction of smoothings and the transfer of properties between smooth nearby fibers and the singular special fiber. The strongest existence result for deformations in classical algebraic geometry is the Bogomolov--Tian--Todorov theorem for Calabi--Yau varieties. A logarithmic variant, once established, constructs log smooth deformations. However, the logarithmic Bogomolov--Tian--Todorov theorem has resisted efforts to its proof for a while. Finally, a method to prove it was discovered in 2019 by Chan, Leung, and Ma. In this book, we explore this new approach to the logarithmic Bogomolov--Tian--Todorov theorem. We prove several variants of the abstract unobstructedness theorem, some of which are new and stronger than previously known results. We investigate its application to the global deformation theory of log smooth and mildly log singular spaces, obtaining unobstructedness results for log Calabi--Yau spaces, some log Fano spaces, and line bundles. Special care is taken to allow sufficiently mild log singularities, including all log singularities that appear in the Gross--Siebert construction of toric log Calabi--Yau mirror pairs.

Moduli space of logarithmic states in critical massive gravities

Abstract:We take new algebraic and geometric perspectives on the combinatorial results recently obtained on the partition functions of critical massive gravities conjectured to be dual to Logarithmic CFTs throught the AdS$_3$/LCFT$_2$ correspondence. We show that the partition functions of logarithmic states can be expressed in terms of Schur polynomials. Subsequently, we show that the moduli space of the logarithmic states is the symmetric product $S^n \left( \mathbb{C}^2 \right)$. As the quotient of an affine space by the symmetric group, this orbifold space is shown to be described by Hilbert series that have palindromic numerators. The palindromic properties of the Hilbert series indicate that the orbifolds are Calabi-Yau, and allow for a new interpretation of the logarithmic state spaces in critical massive gravities as Calabi-Yau singular spaces.

Punctured Logarithmic R-maps

Abstract:In this paper, we develop the theory of punctured R-maps as a crucial component of logarithmic gauged linear sigma models (log GLSM). A punctured R-map is a punctured map in the sense of ACGS, further twisted by the sheaf of differentials on the domain curve. They admit two different but closely related perfect obstruction theories - a canonical one and a reduced one. While the canonical theory leads to generalized double ramification cycles with targets and spin structures, without expansions, the reduced theory describes boundary contributions in log GLSM. Major results of this paper include a sequence of axioms in both canonical and reduced theories: 1. A product formula computing disconnected invariants in terms of connected ones 2. Fundamental class axioms, string and divisor equations As an important application, these formulas lead to a class of invariants in the reduced theory, called effective invariants. They are at the heart of recent advances in GW theory, and will be shown to give rise to explicit correction terms to the quantum Lefschetz principle in higher genus GW theory for arbitrary smooth complete intersections in a forthcoming paper. For quintic 3-folds, we show that all effective invariants are determined by $[(2g-2)/5] + 1$ many basic effective invariants, using the formulas in (1) and (2). This matches the number of free parameters of the famous BCOV B-model theory in physics. Similar results apply to other complete intersections. This, together with the joint works of the last two authors and S. Guo on the genus two mirror theorem and the higher genus mirror conjectures for quintic 3-folds, shows that log GLSM is an effective tool for proving BCOV-type conjectures in higher genus GW theory. Further applications of punctured R-maps include an LG/CY correspondence for effective invariants and a relation to the locus of holomorphic differentials.

Abstract:We present a new method to solve certain ∂ ̄ \bar \partial -equations for logarithmic differential forms by using harmonic integral theory for currents on Kähler manifolds. The result can be considered as a ∂ ∂ ̄ \partial \bar \partial -lemma for logarithmic forms. As applications, we generalize the result of Deligne about closedness of logarithmic forms, give geometric and simpler proofs of Deligne’s degeneracy theorem for the logarithmic Hodge to de Rham spectral sequences at E 1 E_1 -level, as well as a certain injectivity theorem on compact Kähler manifolds. Furthermore, for a family of logarithmic deformations of complex structures on Kähler manifolds, we construct the extension for any logarithmic ( n , q ) (n,q) -form on the central fiber and thus deduce the local stability of log Calabi-Yau structure by extending an iteration method to the logarithmic forms. Finally we prove the unobstructedness of the deformations of a log Calabi-Yau pair and a pair on a Calabi-Yau manifold by the differential geometric method.

Abstract:The main objects of study are adic spaces with logarithmic structures. After establishing the basic definitions, we analyze the Kummer \'etale and pro-Kummer \'etale topologies on log adic spaces. In particular, we show that log adic spaces are locally "log affinoid perfectoid" in the pro-Kummer \'etale topology. As an application, we prove finiteness of cohomologies for Kummer \'etale $\mathbb{F}_p$-local systems on proper log smooth adic spaces.

Abstract:In this article, we establish the logarithmic foundation for compactifying the moduli stacks of the gauged linear sigma model using stable log maps of Abramovich-Chen-Gross-Siebert. We then illustrate our method via the key example of Witten's $r$-spin class to construct a proper moduli stack with a reduced perfect obstruction theory whose virtual cycle recovers the $r$-spin virtual cycle of Chang-Li-Li. Indeed, our construction of the reduced virtual cycle is built upon the work of Chang-Li-Li by appropriately extending and modifying the Kiem-Li cosection along certain logarithmic boundary. In the subsequent article, we push the technique to a general situation. One motivation of our construction is to fit the gauged linear sigma model in the broader setting of Gromov-Witten theory so that powerful tools such as virtual localization can be applied. A project along this line is currently in progress leading to applications including computing loci of holomorphic differentials, and calculating higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants of quintic threefolds.

Abstract: We develop a theory of log adic spaces by combining the theories of adic spaces and log schemes, and study the Kummer \'etale and pro-Kummer \'etale topology for such spaces. We also establish the primitive comparison theorem in this context, and deduce from it some related cohomological finiteness or vanishing results.

Abstract:Based on the logarithmic algebraic geometry and the theory of Deligne systems, we define an abelian category of $\ell$-adic sheaves with weight filtrations on a logarithmic scheme over a finite field, which is similar to the category of variations of mixed Hodge structure. We consider asymptotic behaviors and simple cases of higher direct images of objects of this category. This category is closely related to the monodromy-weight conjecture.

Abstract:In this article we describe the construction of logarithmic models for germs of plane singular analytic foliations, both real and complex. A logarithmic model is a germ of closed meromorphic 1-form with simple poles produced upon some specified geometric data: the structure of dicritical (non-invariant) components in the exceptional divisor of its reduction of singularities, a prescribed finite set of separatrices - invariant analytic branches at the origin - and Camacho-Sad indices with respect to these separatrices. As an application, we use logarithmic models in order to construct real and complex germs of meromorphic functions with a given indeterminacy structure and prescribed sets of zeroes and poles. Also, in the real case, logarithmic models are used in order to build germs of analytic vector fields with a given Bendixson's sectorial decomposition of a neighborhood of $0 \in \mathbb{R}^{2}$ into hyperbolic, parabolic and elliptic sectors. This is carried out in the specific case where all trajectories accumulating to the origin are contained in analytic curves. As a consequence, we can produce real meromorphic functions with a prescribed sectorial decomposition.

Logarithmic tautological rings of the moduli spaces of curves

Abstract:We define the logarithmic tautological rings of the moduli spaces of Deligne-Mumford stable curves (together with a set of additive generators lifting the decorated strata classes of the standard tautological rings). While these algebras are infinite dimensional, a connection to polyhedral combinatorics via a new theory of homological piecewise polynomials allows an effective study. A complete calculation is given in genus 0 via the algebra of piecewise polynomials on the cone stack of the associated Artin fan (lifting Keel's presentation of the Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$). Counterexamples to the simplest generalizations in genus 1 are presented. We show, however, that the structure of the log tautological rings is determined by the complete knowledge of all relations in the standard tautological rings of the moduli spaces of curves. In particular, Pixton's conjecture concerning relations in the standard tautological rings lifts to a complete conjecture for relations in the log tautological rings of the moduli spaces of curves. Several open questions are discussed. We develop the entire theory of logarithmic tautological classes in the context of arbitrary smooth normal crossings pairs $(X,D)$ with explicit formulas for intersection products. As a special case, we give an explicit set of additive generators of the full logarithmic Chow ring of $(X,D)$ in terms of Chow classes on the strata of $X$ and piecewise polynomials on the cone stack.
