Abstract:A great variety of polymer/layered silicate (PLS) nanocomposites have been reported, however, there are few exfoliated PLS nanocomposites and their inorganic-organic interfaces are still a great problem, especially for the elastomers. In this research, a kind of exfoliated elastomer/silicate layer nanocompound was prepared and proved by XRD and TEM, in which 10 phr Na(+) - montmorillonite was dispersed in butadiene-styrene-vinyl pyridine rubber by latex compounding method with acidic flocculants. Moreover, a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA) suggested a strong interfacial interaction (interaction parameter B(H) = 4.91) between the silicate layers and macromolecules in addition to the weak inorganic-organic interfacial interaction, and solid state (15)N NMR indicated the formation of a strong ionic interface through the acidifying pyridine. Subsequently, a remarkable improvement of the dispersing morphology, mechanical performance and gas barrier property appeared, compared to that using calcium ion flocculants. This supports the formation of an exfoliated structure and an improved interfacial interaction.

Abstract:Free-radical polymerization inside mesoporous silica has been investigated in order to open a route to functional polymer-silica composite materials with well-defined mesoporosity. Various vinyl monomers, such as styrene, chloromethyl styrene, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, and methacrylic acid, were polymerized after impregnation into mesoporous silicas with various structures, which were synthesized using polyalkylene oxide-type block copolymers. The location of the polymers was systematically controlled with detailed structures of the silica framework and the polymerization conditions. Particularly noteworthy is the polymer-silica composite structure obtained by in situ polymerization after the selective adsorption of monomers as a uniform film on silica walls. The analysis of XRD data and the N(2) adsorption isotherms indicates the formation of uniform polymer nanocoating. The resultant polymer-silica composite materials can easily be post-functionalized to incorporate diverse functional groups in high density, due to the open porous structure allowing facile access for the chemical reagent. The fundamental characteristics of the composite materials are substantiated by testing the biomolecule's adsorption capacity and catalytic reactivity. Depending on the structure and composition of polymers, the resultant polymer-silica composite materials exhibit notably distinct adsorption properties toward biomolecules, such as proteins. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the nanocoatings of polymers deposited on the mesopore walls have remarkably enhanced catalytic activity and selectivity, as compared to that of bulk polymer resins. We believe that, due to facile functionalization and attractive textural properties, the mesoporous polymer-silica composite materials are very useful for applications, such as adsorption, separation, host-guest complexes, and catalysis.

Abstract:A series of polymers including polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and polystyrene (PS) were successfully adsorbed on mesoporous silica with tubular structure by adding silica particles directly into polymer solution during stirring. Presence of polymers on silica was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis, FTIR spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopic images. Nitrogen sorption measurements were employed to investigate the variation in surface and pore properties after polymer adsorption. BET specific surface area, pore size distribution (PSD), and surface fractal analysis were calculated in traditional BET (Brunauer, Emmett and Teller) method, BJH (Barret, Joyner and Hanlenda), and the thermodynamic method, respectively from the isotherms. We proposed a model for conformation of polymer adsorbed based on such variations, which was further confirmed by transmission electron microscopic results. We found that PVA and PEG with high polarity (due to high content of oxygen atoms both in the chain or hydroxyl groups), could spread their chains into the tubes of molecular sieves except the adsorption outside of the tubes via hydrogen bond, while PS with relatively low polarity could only adsorb randomly on the surface.

Abstract:Mesoporosity combined with organic polymer functionality and hydrophobicity could give rise to promising new materials with applications in host–guest chemistry and biosensor devices. The synthesis of polymer–silica hybrid mesoporous materials with pore sizes of 3–6 nm is described, in which materials with large specific surface areas (∼800 m2 g–1) and pore volumes (∼0.7 cm3 g–1) as well as relatively narrow pore size distributions are produced by a sol-gel reaction in the presence of a non-surfactant template or pore-forming agent, which is subsequently removed by solvent extraction.

Abstract:This research reports the use of organic-modified mesoporous silica particles as fillers to form organic/inorganic nanocomposites with improved thermal and mechanical properties. The particle fillers were synthesized by co-assembly of surfactant and silicate species prepared by hydrolysis and condensation reactions of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and (3-trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TMSPMA) through an aerosol process. Selective surfactant removal resulted in mesoporous particles with high surface areas and with covalently bound propyl methacrylate ligands on the pore surface as indicated by XRD, TEM, N2 adsorption−desorption, FTIR, 13C NMR, 29Si NMR, and other techniques. Abstract:In industrial processes membranes made of composite polymer material are widely employed to separate gas mixtures. These membranes have better performance than membranes consisting of polymer alone. To understand the mechanism and therefore aid membrane design it is essential to explore the penetrant transport in the complex composites from the molecular level, but few researchers have done such research to our knowledge. Silica has different crystalline form. The transport properties of penetrants in the composite of PMP and nanoparticles of these two types of silica are obviously different. Molecular dynamics method was done successfully in the research to explore the transport of different penetrants in the composites of PMP and nanoparticles of two forms of silica, the cristobalite form (PMPC) and the faujasite form (PMPF). .

Abstract:A family of highly ordered mesoporous polymers and carbon frameworks, including p6m, Ia3d, Im3m Fm3m, and Fd3m mesostructures, has been prepared by the organic-organic assembly of triblock copolymers PEO-PPO-PEO, reverse copolymer PPO-PEO-PPO and PEO-PS with resols via solvent evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) strategy. By using pre-hydrolyzed TEOS as an inorganic co-precursor, highly ordered mesoporous polymer-silica and carbon-silica nanocomposites with interpenetrating networks were also synthesized via a triconstituent co-assembly. After the removal of silica component from carbon-silica nanocomposites, ordered mesoporous carbons then can be derived with large pore sizes of 6.7 nm, pore volumes of 2.0 cm(3)/g, and high surface area of 2470 m(2)/g.

Abstract:In the present study, [bmim][PF6] ionic liquid (IL) was introduced into the pores of two ordered mesoporous silicas (MCM-41 and SBA-15) having different pore sizes by means of two different processes: a) with physical imbibition from a methanol solution under high vacuum and b) by chemically immobilising the IL with silanisation of the pore surface followed by reaction with butyl-methyl imidazolium chloride and anion exchange with PF6, the process termed as the grafting to method. Both the extent of IL entrapment and the structural properties of the IL phase under confinement were investigated by SANS, contrast-matching SANS, XRD and nitrogen adsorption measurements. The results show that the pores of chemically prepared samples are not totally filled by IL and also suggest for ordering of the silylated IL phase. On the other hand, the physically prepared samples are almost or totally filled with IL whereas no evidence for ordering of the confined IL phase was observed.

Abstract:We have developed a comprehensive strategy for quantitatively assessing the hydrophilicity/ hydrophobicity of nanoporous materials by combining advanced adsorption studies, novel liquid intrusion techniques and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. For this we have chosen a well-defined system of model materials, i.e., the highly ordered mesoporous silica molecular sieve SBA-15 in its pristine state and functionalized with different amounts of trimethylsilyl groups allowing one to accurately tailor the surface chemistry while maintaining the well-defined pore structure. For an absolute quantification of the trimethylsilyl group density, quantitative 1H solid-state NMR spectroscopy under Magic Angle Spinning was employed. A full textural characterization of the materials was obtained by high-resolution argon 87 K adsorption, coupled with the application of dedicated methods based on non-local-density functional theory (NLDFT). Based on the known texture of the model materials, we developed a novel methodology allowing one to determine the effective contact angle of water adsorbed on the pore surfaces from complete wetting to non-wetting, constituting a powerful parameter for the characterization of the surface chemistry inside porous materials. The surface chemistry was found to vary from hydrophilic to hydrophobic with increasing TMS functionalization. For wetting and partial wetting surfaces, pore condensation of water is observed at pressures P smaller than the bulk saturation pressure P0 (i.e., at P/P0 < 1) and the effective contact angle of water on the pore walls could be derived from the water sorption isotherms. However, for non-wetting surfaces, pore condensation occurs at pressures above the saturation pressure (i.e., at P/P0 > 1). In this case we investigated the pore filling of water (i.e. the vapour-liquid phase transition) by the application of a novel, liquid water intrusion/extrusion methodology, allowing one to derive the effective contact angel of water on the pore walls even in case of non-wetting. Complementary molecular simulations provide density profiles of water on pristine and TMS-grafted silica surfaces (mimicking the tailored, functionalized experimental silica surfaces) which allow for a molecular view on the adsorbed water phase. Within this context, the presented methodology can be considered a powerful toolbox for a comprehensive surface chemistry assessment for pristine and functionalized mesoporous silica surfaces, but can also be extended to any other nanoporous material. It has the potential to provide important guidance for the design and selection of porous materials for various applications including separation applications (such as chromatography), heterogeneous catalysis etc.

Abstract:Communication: Ordered silica/polystyrene composites were prepared via radical polymerization in silica colloidal crystal templates, and ordered macroporous polymers were accordingly obtained after removing the silica templates. The confinement effect of the templates on the polymers in the composites was investigated. NMR results indicated that the polystyrenes formed both inside and outside the template were atactic. The polystyrene inside the template possessed a higher molecular weight and a narrower molecular weight distribution than the bulk one outside the template. The glass transition temperature of the confined polystyrene increased significantly with decreasing silica sphere size of the templates, and so did the contraction of polymer pores. The smaller the silica sphere size of the templates, the more remarkable is the confinement, which could be explained by entropic confinement of the polymer chains within a fixed inorganic meso-framework.

Abstract:The development of composite materials with functional additives proved to be an effective way to improve or supplement the required properties of polymers. Herein, mesoporous silica (SBA-15) with different pore sizes were used as functional additives to prepare SBA-15/PF (phenolic resin) nanocomposites, which were prepared by in situ polymerization and then, compression molding. The physical properties and structural parameters of SBA-15 with different pore sizes were characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal properties of the SBA-15/PF hybrid were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The mechanical, friction, and dynamic mechanical properties of SBA-15/PF nanocomposites were also studied. The results revealed that the pore sizes of SBA-15 have a significant effect on the resulting SBA-15/PF hybrid and SBA-15/PF nanocomposites. The thermal stability of the SBA-15/PF hybrid was dramatically improved in comparison with pure PF. The friction and dynamic mechanical properties of the SBA-15/PF nanocomposites were enhanced significantly. Specifically, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the nanocomposite increased by 19.0 °C for the SBA-15/PF nanocomposites modified with SBA-15-3. In addition, the nanocomposite exhibited a more stable friction coefficient and a lower wear rate at a high temperature. The enhancement in thermal and frictional properties for the nanocomposites is ascribed to the confinement of the PF chains or chain segments in the mesopores channels.

Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous polymer-silica and carbon-silica nanocomposites with interpenetrating networks have been successfully synthesized by the evaporation-induced triconstituent co-assembly method, wherein soluble resol polymer is used as an organic precursor, prehydrolyzed TEOS is used as an inorganic precursor, and triblock copolymer F127 is used as a template. It is proposed for the first time that ordered mesoporous nanocomposites have "reinforced concrete"-structured frameworks. By adjusting the initial mass ratios of TEOS to resol, we determined the obtained nanocomposites possess continuous composition with the ratios ranging from zero to infinity for the two constituents that are "homogeneously" dispersed inside the pore walls. The presence of silicates in nanocomposites dramatically inhibits framework shrinkage during the calcination, resulting in highly ordered large-pore mesoporous carbon-silica nanocomposites. Combustion in air or etching in HF solution can remove carbon or silica from the carbon-silica nanocomposites and yield ordered mesoporous pure silica or carbon frameworks. The process generates plenty of small pores in carbon or/and silica pore walls. Ordered mesoporous carbons can then be obtained with large pore sizes of approximately 6.7 nm, pore volumes of approximately 2.0 cm(3)/g, and high surface areas of approximately 2470 m(2)/g. The pore structures and textures can be controlled by varying the sizes and polymerization degrees of two constituent precursors. Accordingly, by simply tuning the aging time of TEOS, ordered mesoporous carbons with evident bimodal pores at 2.6 and 5.8 nm can be synthesized.

Abstract:Grafting non-polar polymer chains on the surface of polar nanoparticles (e.g., silica) is an effective way to enhance particle/matrix interactions and thus promote their homogeneous dispersion within a non-polar matrix, which leads to improved mechanical properties. Current grafting methods have not yet produced nanoparticles with well-defined polymers on the surface and high grafting density. Here, we employed anionic polymerization high vacuum techniques to synthesize ω-triethoxysilyl polystyrene (PS-TEOS) and PS-b-PI macromonomers followed by hydrolysis/condensation of macromonomers, leading to the in situ formation of grafted (grafting through) silica nanoparticles with either PS or polystyrene-b-polyisoprene (PS-b-PI) chains. The molecular characteristics of the precursors PS-TEOS and PS-b-PI-TEOS were determined by proton nuclear magnetic resonance, size exclusion chromatography, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight. The formation of PS (PS@SiO2 NPs) and PS-b-PI (PS-b-PI@SiO2 NPs) nanoparticles was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 29Si solid-state NMR, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and dynamic light scattering. Blends of PS@SiO2 with commercially available PS and PS-b-PI@SiO2 with anionically synthesized thermoplastic elastomer (PS-b-PI-b-PS) were obtained either in melt by extrusion or in solution by evaporation. The role of polymer@SiO2 on the mechanical properties and morphological features of the matrices was examined by tensile testing and scanning electron microscopy. The proposed general method controls the molecular weight, chemical composition, particle size, and grafting density of nanoparticles and effectively improves the mechanical characteristics of the two families of PS-based nanocomposites.

Abstract:A new method, which combines the swelling of preformed porous polymer particles in silica precursor and sol–gel procedure at the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), is used to prepare spherical, highly porous silica particles and polymer-silica composites. As a by-product, MCM-41 silica is formed. The resulting products are the effect of two simultaneous and competing processes: the swelling of polymer in silica precursor tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and the adsorption of CTAB on polymer with simultaneous desorption of TEOS. The paper presents the formation mechanism of final silica particles as well as the structural properties of composites and silicas derived from them. All materials are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy, (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), nitrogen adsorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD). This study is supplemented by the Naproxen desorption measurements for the selected composites and silicas.

Abstract:Novel porous poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) silica nanocomposites have been produced by utilization of polymerization-induced phase separation in a simple one-pot approach. A facile free radical polymerization of MMA in the presence of surface methacrylate-functionalized silica nanoparticles was carried out in ethanol-based solvents, successfully producing novel, morphologically designable porous nanocomposite monoliths. Differing from standard free radical polymerization in solution, a mixture of good and poor solvents (ethanol/N,N-dimethylformamide ratio) for the resulting polymer was used to trigger spinodal phase separation. The influence of monomer concentration, as well as solvent composition, on the morphology of the resulting porous polymers has been investigated. Porous monolith structures composed of connected particles and co-continuous morphologies were observed under a scanning electron microscope depending on the polymerization conditions. The resulting polymers were insoluble and showed swelling characteristics in some organic solvents that are capable of dissolving regular PMMA, indicating covalent bonds between the functionalized silica nanoparticles and the polymer chains. The presence of silica particles in the final polymer was proven via an ATR-IR analysis. The glass transition temperature of the present PMMA-silica nanocomposite was higher than that of the conventional PMMA. The porous polymer immersed in a mixed organic solvent showed coloration induced by the Christiansen effect.

Polymer-Grafted Porous Silica Nanoparticles with Enhanced CO 2 Permeability and Mechanical Performance

Abstract:Three different types of polymer ligands, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(methyl methacrylate-random-poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate) (PMMA-r-PEGMEMA), and poly(ionic liquid)s (PIL), were grafted onto the surface of 15 nm solid and large hollow porous silica nanoparticles (average particle size ∼60 nm) by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) to demonstrate the enhanced carbon dioxide (CO2) permeability as well as mechanical properties. After characterizing the purified products, free-standing bulk films were fabricated by the solvent-casting method. The poly(ionic liquid) nanocomposite films exhibited a much higher carbon dioxide permeance than PMMA and PMMA-r-PEGMEMA systems with a similar silica content. Also, the hollow silica-mixed matrix membranes showed a significant enhancement in CO2 permeability compared to the 15 nm solid silica films because of the pore structure. Synthesis and Characterization of Hierarchically Ordered Porous Silica Materials

Abstract:A series of hierarchically ordered porous silica composites were synthesized using anionic (SO4 -2) polystyrene spheres and triblock copolymers Pluronic F127 (EO107PO70EO107) and P123 (EO20PO70EO20) as templates in the presence of cosurfactants (n-alcohols) in an acidic medium. The silica materials were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, Hg porosimetry, N2 adsorption, solid-state NMR, and TG-DTA. At least three distinct pore sizes are observed in these materials. The composites consist of three-dimensional ordered macrospheres (200−800 nm) with interconnecting uniform-sized (70−130 nm) windows. The walls of these macrospheres consist of mesostructured pores (3−8 nm). Nitrogen adsorption indicates the presence of microporosity (<2 nm). Here, we report the detailed synthesis and characterization of such hierarchically ordered porous silica composites (Sen et al. U.K. Patent, GB 0201951.1; Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2003, 42, 4649) with macro−meso−microporous structure and a three-dimensional interconnectivity. These materials could be useful as potential supports for heterogeneous catalysis for bulkier molecules where diffusion of reactant molecules could be facilitated.

Abstract:A 52-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of hypesthesia on the right side of his body. He had no medical history. On admission, he exhibited hypesthesia and disturbance of the touch and the vibratory sense on the right side of his body excluding the face. A brain T2* -weighted image revealed the a dot like lesion surrounded by an iso-signal lesion in the medial medulla oblongata. Therefore a diagnosis of medullary hemorrhage was made. Although a vascular malformation was considered as the cause of the hemorrhage, cerebral angiography did not reveal any vascular malformations. After admission, he developed left hypoglossal nerve palsy on day 6, and intractable hiccups on day 11. A T2* -weighted image and a FLAIR image disclosed edema surrounding the hematoma in the medial medullary lesion. T2* weighted images are useful for diagnosing and evaluating serial changes of medullary hemorrhage.

Abstract:In the present work, we report an organosilane-assisted synthesis of ordered mesoporous poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA)-silica composites by employing TEOS, 3-(triethoxysilyl)furan and furfuryl alcohol as precursors, and triblock copolymer F127 as a structure-directing agent via an EISA process. After thermal curing of the PFA, the triblock copolymer can be removed by calcination at 350 °C in N2 atmosphere. The PFA/silica nanocomposites have been characterized by SAXS, TEM, N2 sorption, FT-IR, elemental analysis, 13C-NMR, 29Si-NMR and TGA techniques. The results show that the organic–inorganic nanocomposites have ordered 2-D centered-rectangular (c2mm) mesostructure even when the organic content in the samples is as high as 60 wt%, but their surface areas (200–510 m2/g), pore volumes (0.15–0.54 cm3/g) and pore sizes (4.8–5.7 nm) gradually reduce with increasing organic component. Air (600 °C, 5 h) or HF (10 wt%) secondary treatments of the nanocomposite with 60 wt% PFA lead to a collapse of the mesostructure as shown by SAXS and N2 sorption techniques, implying the existence of an interpenetrating PFA/silica framework, in which both silica and organic polymers synergistically support the structure. The adsorption performances of the hybrid materials for toluene were also conducted. Because of the hydrophobic property, i.e. affinity with toluene molecules, the PFA/silica nanocomposite having a similar surface area as ordered mesoporous silica shows an adsorption quantity twice as large as that of ordered mesoporous silica.
