Abstract:Montmorillonite (MMT), a cationic clay, and layered double hydroxide (LDH), an anionic clay were prepared through “top-down” and “bottom-up” methods, respectively, with lateral dimension on hundred-nanometer scale as well as high aspect ratio. These two types of nanosheets, served as additives in interfacial polymerization process, were utilized to fabricate thin film nanocomposite (TFN) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes containing cationic and anionic clay nanosheets. The properties of TFN membranes were effectively modified with the advantage of unique charged properties and hydrophilic nature of these nanoclay filler materials,. Both MMT and LDH filled TFN membranes showed increased hydrophilicity and improved desalination performance. More importantly, the incorporation of MMT and LDH nanoclays resulted in a more and less negatively charged membrane surface, respectively, and thus exhibited different electrostatic repulsion effects and improved antifouling performances towards protein, cationic surfactant, and natural organic matter foulants. The results indicate that clay nanosheets are effective filler materials to tailor membrane surface properties and fouling resistance. Since the modification by nanoclays can be achieved in the membrane preparation process without altering existing procedures, this approach can be considered as a facile way to produce novel high-performance and fouling-resistant TFN RO membrane for desalination.
Molecular‐Sieving Membrane by Partitioning the Channels in Ultrafiltration Membrane by in Situ Polymerization

Abstract:Commercial ultrafiltration membranes have proliferated globally for water treatment. However, their pore sizes are too large to sieve gases. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) feature well-developed microporosity yet are difficult to be fabricated into membranes. Herein, we report a strategy to prepare molecular-sieving membranes by partitioning the mesoscopic channels in water ultrafiltration membrane (PSU) into ultra-micropores by space-confined polymerization of multi-functionalized rigid building units. Nine CMP@PSU membranes were obtained, and their separation performance for H2 /CO2 , H2 /N2 , and H2 /CH4 pairs surpass the Robeson upper bound and rival against the best of those reported membranes. Furthermore, highly crosslinked skeletons inside the channels result in the structural robustness and transfer into the excellent aging resistance of the CMP@PSU. This strategy may shed light on the design and fabrication of high-performance polymeric gas separation membranes.
High Selective Mixed Membranes Based on Mesoporous MCM-41 and MCM-41-NH2 Particles in a Polysulfone Matrix

Abstract:The development of membrane technology for gas separation processes evolved with the fabrication of so-called mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) as an alternative to neat polymers, in order to improve the overall membrane effectiveness. Once the mixed matrix membranes are used, the gas separation properties of the porous materials used as fillers are combined with the economical processability and desirable mechanical properties of polymer matrix. Mixed mesoporous silica/polymer membranes with high CO2 and O2 permeability and selectivity were designed and prepared by incorporating MCM-41 particles into a polymer matrix. Ordered mesoporous silica MCM-41 with high surface confirmed by BET analysis were obtained and functionalized with amino groups. In order to obtain the mixed membranes, the mesoporous silica was embedded into the polysulfone matrix (PSF). Flat mixed matrix membranes with 5, 10, and 20 wt% MCM-41 and MCM-41-NH2 loadings have been prepared via the polymer solution casting method. The phase's interactions were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetry (TGA), while the gas separation performances were evaluated using pure gases (CO2, O2, N2). The MCM-41/PSF and MCM-41-NH2/PSF membranes exhibited increased permeabilities for O2 (between 1.2 and 1.7 Barrer) and CO2 (between 4.2 and 8.1 Barrer) compared to the neat membrane (0.8 Barrer). The loss of selectivity for the O2/N2 (between 6 and 8%) and CO2/N2 (between 25 and 41%) gas pairs was not significant compared with the pure membrane (8 and 39%, respectively). The MCM-41/PSF membranes were more selective for CO2/N2 than the O2/N2 pair, due to the size difference between CO2 and N2 molecules and to the condensability of CO2, leading to an increase of solubility. Stronger interactions have been noticed for MCM-41-NH2/PSF membranes due to the amino groups, with the selectivity increasing for both gas pairs compared with the MCM-41/PSF membranes.

Abstract:Hybridization of porous fillers and polymers is an effective strategy for fabricating composite membranes, affording synergic properties contributed by every single component. However, it has high requirements on the dispersivity of porous fillers and compatibility between porous fillers and the polymeric matrix. Herein, we report the fabrication of homoporous hybrid membranes (HHMs) by chemically cross-linking polymerizable metal-organic cages (MOCs) with polymeric precursors via UV-induced polymerization. The polymerizable MOC molecules, synthesized by heterogeneous postassembly modification, are soluble in polymeric precursors and can be cross-linked with in-situ formed polymeric matrix at a molecular-level dispersivity. The cross-linking between MOCs and polymeric matrix can improve the interfacial compatibility and enhance the thermal stability of the membranes. Compared with the pristine polymeric membrane, the HHM with 1 wt% of MOC loading shows an enhanced CO2 permeability (338 Barrer) and a comparable CO2/CH4 selectivity (16.7) due to the increased CO2 solubility and diffusivity with the addition of MOCs. This strategy inspires the design of hybrid membranes with uniform yet tunable pore sizes for efficient molecular separations.

Abstract:A new polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) designed with eight –(CH2)3–NH–(CH2)2–NH2 groups (PNEN) at its apexes was used as nanocomposite uploading into 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE)-derived organosilica to prepare mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for gas separation. The mixtures of BTESE-PNEN were uniform with particle size of around 31 nm, which is larger than that of pure BTESE sols. The characterization of thermogravimetric (TG) and gas permeance indicates good thermal stability. A similar amine-contained material of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was doped into BTESE to prepare hybrid membranes through a copolymerized strategy as comparison. The pore size of the BTESE-PNEN membrane evaluated through a modified gas-translation model was larger than that of the BTESE-APTES hybrid membrane at the same concentration of additions, which resulted in different separation performance. The low values of Ep(CO2)-Ep(N2) and Ep(N2) for the BTESE-PNEN membrane at a low concentration of PNEN were close to those of copolymerized BTESE-APTES-related hybrid membranes, which illustrates a potential CO2 separation performance by using a mixed matrix membrane strategy with multiple amine POSS as particles.

Abstract:Recently, various types of hollow materials have been added into polymer matrices to improve the gas permeation and separation performance of polymer materials. In this study, hollow polyimide (PI) nanoparticles with microporous shells were synthesized by interfacial polymerization between 4,4-(9-fluorenylidene)-dianiline and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarbonyl tetrachloride in the microemulsion. Free-standing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/hollow PI nanoparticles mixed matrix membranes were prepared and the gas permeation-separation performance was investigated. The hollow and porous structure of the nanoparticles was well-preserved in membranes, which reduced the mass transport resistance. The permeability firstly increased and then decreased as the nanoparticle loading increased without sacrificing the permselectivity. Compared to the neat PMDS membranes with O2 and CO2 permeability of 786 and 3484 Barrer, respectively, the mixed matrix membranes with 3 wt% hollow PI nanoparticles achieved a O2 permeability up to 1664 Barrer accompanied with an O2/N2 permselectivity of 2.3 and a CO2 permeability up to 6639 Barrer accompanied with a CO2/N2 permselectivity of 9.1 at 35 °C and 0.2 MPa. Mixed-matrix composite membranes were fabricated by dip-coating the porous polyetherimide substrate into a PDMS solution with 3 wt% nanoparticles. The resultant defect-free mixed-matrix composite membrane showed excellent O2 and CO2 permeances of up to 1677 and 6502 GPU, respectively. The air separation measurement showed that the composite membranes could produce oxygen-enriched permeate stream enriched to ca. 30 vol%.

Abstract:One of the methods of improving mixed matrix membranes is the use of nanoparticles and compounds containing hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, which can be a suitable choice to help more permeability of gases. In this study, a mixed matrix membrane comprising polyether block amide/polyvinyl alcohol (Pebax/PVA) and magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles was fabricated via solution casting. The Pebax/PVA membrane with MgO loadings of 10–15 % at varying PVA weight ratios (0, 20, 50, 80 %) was evaluated for CH 4 and CO 2 gas separation performance. Characterization via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) revealed the nanoparticles well-dispersed within the polymer matrix, with surface roughness increasing with MgO addition. XRD analysis indicated stronger interaction between MgO and PVA chains versus Pebax. Peaks at ∼ 42, 62° suggest nanoparticles lodged between polymer strands. Variables assessed as independents impacting CH 4 and CO 2 permeability included PVA content, MgO loading, pressure and temperature. ANOVA showed the quadratic model best fitted correlations between variables and responses. Experimental data yielded the formulation with optimum selectivity. Molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) via Materials Studio estimated CH 4 and CO 2 diffusion through selected membranes. Simulated results matched experimental data well. Relative to prior separation data and outcomes herein, the synthesized nanocomposite membrane proved highly effective, promising potential for diverse gas mixtures. Membrane permeabilities were also evaluated.

Enhancing the Gas Separation Selectivity of Mixed-Matrix Membranes Using a Dual-Interfacial Engineering Approach

Abstract:We report a dual-interfacial engineering approach that uses a sub-20 nm polycrystalline MOF-74 shell as a transition phase to engineer the MOF–polymer interface. The application of a shell MOF layer divides the original single interface problem into two interfaces: MOF–MOF and MOF–polymer, which can be individually addressed. The greater external surface area created by the uneven MOF-74 shell containing high-density open metal sites allows the MOF to interact with 300% polymer at the interface compared to traditional MOF, thereby ensuring good interfacial compatibility. When applied on UiO-66-NH2, its respective mixed-matrix membranes exhibit a simultaneous increase of CO2/CH4 separation selectivity and CO2 permeability with increasing MOF loading, implying a defect-free interface. When applied on MOF-801, the mixed-matrix membranes exhibit an ethylene/ethane separation selectivity up to 5.91, a drastic 76% increase compared to that of the neat polymer owing to a "gas focusing" mechanism promoted by the preferred pore orientation in the MOF-74 layer. Abstract:It is still a great challenge to prepare high performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) because of the difficulty in finely tuning the compatibility between filler and organic phases. In this work, ZIF-8 nanoparticles hydrophobically functionalized by 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole (DMBIM) via shell ligand exchange (SLE) reaction were incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to fabricate defect-free MMMs. Organic--inorganic interface compatibility was realized because of more abundant organic ligands from DMBIM. The effects of different loadings on membrane microstructure and gas separation performance were investigated systematically. A significantly enhanced C3H8/N-2 separation performance with C3H8 permeability over 2.10 x 10(4) Barrer (91 % higher than that of pure PDMS membrane) and C3H8/N-2 selectivity of 99.5 (116 % higher than that of pure PDMS membrane) were achieved. Abstract:The success in synthesizing a variety of nanostructured materials in recent years have provided a new degree of freedom for the development of advanced polymer materials for gas separation. In this paper, a series of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)/oxydianiline (ODA) polyimide (PI) membranes filling with polystyrene (PS) and poly(styrene-co-4-vinylpyridine) (PSVP)-nanoparticles were fabricated and their gas separation properties for CO2, O2, N2 and CH4 were measured. Concerning the PI/PS-nanoparticle composite membranes, the gas permeabilities and selectivities decrease with the increase of PS-nanoparticles in the membranes. These are due to the increase in gas diffusion coefficients and the decrease in diffusion selectivities. For PI/PSVP-nanoparticle composite membranes, both increase in gas permeabilities and selectivities are observed when the PSVP-nanoparticles increase from 10 to 20wt.% in the membranes, while both the diffusion coefficients and diffusion selectivities show decrease. It was found that the membrane containing 20% PSVP-nanoparticles shows both high gas permeability and high permselectivity towards CO2. These results may be ascribed to the high solubility of CO2 and O2 in the pyridine-containing polymers and the relative homogenous distribution of PSVP-nanoparticle in the PI matrix. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the structure of the nanoparticles and the composite membranes. Temperature effects on the gas permeabilities and diffusivities of the membranes were studied.
Scalable Polymeric Few-Nanometer Organosilica Membranes with Hydrothermal Stability for Selective Hydrogen Separation

Abstract:Nanoporous silica membranes exhibit excellent H2/CO2 separation properties for sustainable H2 production and CO2 capture but are prepared via complicated thermal processes above 400 °C, which prevent their scalable production at a low cost. Here, we demonstrate the rapid fabrication (within 2 min) of ultrathin silica-like membranes (∼3 nm) via an oxygen plasma treatment of polydimethylsiloxane-based thin-film composite membranes at 20 °C. The resulting organosilica membranes unexpectedly exhibit H2 permeance of 280–930 GPU (1 GPU = 3.347 × 10–10 mol m–2 s–1 Pa–1) and H2/CO2 selectivity of 93–32 at 200 °C, far surpassing state-of-the-art membranes and Robeson's upper bound for H2/CO2 separation. When challenged with a 3 d simulated syngas test containing water vapor at 200 °C and a 340 d stability test, the membrane shows durable separation performance and excellent hydrothermal stability. Abstract:In this work the properties of porous materials prepared from clays, for the separation of binary mixtures of hydrocarbons, were studied. The samples were representative of two main groups of porous solids prepared from clays: Pillared Interlayered Clays (PILCs) with pillars of aluminum or zirconium oxide, and Porous Clays Heterostructures, with silica walls or functionalized. The hydrocarbons to be separated were in the range of six to eight carbon atoms, including aromatics. Since PILCs have narrower pores than PCHs, the effects of the molecular structure of the molecules to be separated are more relevant in the former materials. In the case of PCHs, the interaction with silanol or organic groups is key for their selective adsorption properties.

Abstract:3D Printed silicone nanocomposite membranes and transport behavior. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)‐based membranes containing amine‐functionalized and unfunctionalized silica particles were fabricated via direct ink writing for CO2/N2 gas separation. The printability of the inks was evaluated by rheological measurements, while spectroscopy, microscopy, thermal measurements, and mechanical testing were employed to characterize the printed membranes. The surface morphology of the membranes revealed the absence of voids, demonstrating their suitability for gas separation. The printed membranes also exhibited desirable thermal and mechanical properties (i.e., thermal degradation temperature of 518 °C and tensile strength as high as 1.178 MPa with 529% elongation). The PDMS‐based membranes generally displayed high permeability for CO2 but slightly low selectivity for the CO2/N2 gas pair. The best‐combined permeability‐selectivity performance of 8794 barrer and selectivity of 11.64 was demonstrated by the printed PDMS membrane containing no SiO2 fillers. The inclusion of unfunctionalized SiO2 particles generally increased the membrane's gas permeability but compromised the selectivity. In contrast, membranes with amine‐functionalized silica showed improved selectivity compared to membranes containing unfunctionalized silica. Overall, the performance and characteristics offered by the PDMS/silica composite membranes demonstrated the potential of 3D printing as an economical and sustainable fabrication approach to developing materials for carbon capture applications.

Abstract:Microporous aluminophosphates are promising materials for gas separation, but their industrial applications are still challenging due to the permeability-selectivity "trade-off" behavior. A new approach is now reported by the addition of single novel template N, N-diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA) into the gel precursor to prepare the pure AlPO-18 membrane with both high permeance and selectivity. It was identified that the AlPO-18 membrane possessed small plate-like crystals on support surface. The single and mixed CO2/CH4 and N-2/CH4 gas separa-tions were measured. The best membrane exhibited high CO2 and N-2 permeances of 9.2, 0.91 x 10(-7) mol m(-2) s(-1)center dot Pa-1 under the two-component gas mixture, and the mixture selectivities in CO2/CH4 and N-2/CH4 were 93 and 6.0 at 303 K and 0.2 MPa, respectively. This strategy not only demonstrated a potential zeolite membrane material for gas separation but also furnished ideas for the preparation of high permeable thin films.
Preparation and gas separation properties of PDMS composite membrane materials

Abstract:The key and desiderate problem of polymeric gas separation membranes is to increase simultaneously permeability and premselectivity. Based on polydimethylsiloxane containing vinyl groups (PDMS) and vinyl acetic acid cobalt as matrix materials, tetramethylcyclotetra siloxane as crosslinking agent, PDMS crosslinked membrane containing cobalt was first prepared by hydrosilylation reaction at room temperature. A novel PDMS composite membrane was also prepared by using porous polyetherimide as supporting layer and solution-casting method. Effects of some factors (such as cobalt content, testing temperature and difference pressures) on the gas separation properties of the composite membranes were investigated. The results show that the composite membranes possess excellent gas separation properties and their permeability and premselectivity can be increased simultaneously. For example, permeability coefficient for oxygen is 2.181×10-5 cm3/(cm2•s•cmHg) and the separation factor for oxygen and nitrogen is 3.41 at 20°C and the pressure difference of 0.05 MPa. The excellent gas separation properties of the composite membranes may be attributed to the formation of the cobalt complex structure and polyetherimide supporting layer.

Abstract:Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with the performance between the matrix and the filler is a promising strategy for membranes with excellent gas permeability-selectivity. In this study, the hollow polydimethylsiloxane nanoparticles were synthesized and then incorporated with the poly(oxide ethylene) monomer and tri-functional cross-linker to form mixed matrix membranes by in situ polymerization. The hollow nanoparticles formed the independent closed nanocavities in membranes, which enhanced the gas permeability contributed by both the improved diffusivity and solubility. At high loading, the hollow polydimethylsiloxane nanoparticle was converted into the continuous phase with the cross-linked poly(oxide ethylene) as the dispersed phase. Gases preferred to permeate through the connected cluster of hollow polydimethylsiloxane nanoparticles, finally leading to ultrahigh gas permeabilities far going beyond the instinct values of polydimethylsiloxane and the cross-linked poly(oxide ethylene). The optimized membrane with 34 wt% hollow nanoparticles loadings exhibited ultrahigh permeabilities with the values of 44186 Barrer for CO 2 and 11506 Barrer for O 2 , accompanied with a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 9.9 and an O 2 /N 2 selectivity of 2.6, which exceeded the 2008 Robeson upper bound for O 2 /N 2 and located at the 2008 Robeson upper bound for CO 2 /N 2 .

Abstract:Developing new robust membrane materials for separating carbon dioxide are getting more and more attention today. In this work, Poly[bis(n-propylamine)phosphazene] (PPA), poly[bis(n-amylamine)phosphazene] (PAA) and poly[bis(n-octylamine)phosphazene] (POA) were synthesized and the corresponding composite membranes with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as supporting membrane were prepared. FT-IR, SEM, NMR, XPS, TGA and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscope (PALS) were used to characterize PPA/PVDF, PAA/PVDF and POA/PVDF composite membranes. The characterization results showed that the prepared membranes had desired structure and the free volume of membranes were increased with increasing the length of side chain of polyphosphazene (PPO). The gas permeation test indicated that PPA/PVDF, PAA/PVDF and POA/PVDF membranes all had good gas permeability and selectivity for CO2, and as expected, the POA/PVDF membrane had the highest permeability owing to the biggest free volume, meanwhile, the selectivity was basically unchanged.

Abstract:Silica-impregnated, brominated PPO [poly(phenylene oxide)] (BPPO) membranes exhibit enhanced CO2 permeability relative to pure BPPO membranes due to higher gas solubility and especially higher gas diffusivity. Among the three silica sizes (2, 10, and 30 nm) characterized in this work, the 10 nm silica is found to result in the highest gas permeability, about 5 times higher than that of the pure BPPO membranes. These permeability enhancements do not cause an appreciable loss of selectivity, which remains essentially unchanged, for example, about 21 for the CO2/N2 separation and about 15 for the CO2/CH4 separation. The permeability increases with increasing silica content, which, however, cannot exceed about 0.35 silica/BPPO weight ratio due to a substantial increase in brittleness.

Abstract:Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) based on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are expected to realize efficient separation of CO 2 . However, interfacial compatibility issues between MOFs and polymer matrices limit their performance. In this work, a post-synthesis modification (PSM) strategy was adopted to convert UiO-66 into porous liquids (PLs). MMMs were prepared by incorporating PLs into PIM-1 matrix. The PLs have a liquid-like behavior and can be evenly scattered in PIM-1 matrix to form an interface without defect. The SEM morphology analysis further certified that MMMs had no interface defect and PLs had brilliant compatibility with the polymer film. In addition, the CO 2 -philic ether bonds of the EO fragments enable the MMMs to have superior CO 2 selective separation. Compared with pure PIM-1, the highest CO 2 permeability was improved by 158.0 % and 62.5 % was the increase in CO 2 /N 2 selectivity, arriving at 7211.7 Barrer and 26.0, respectively. Meanwhile, the overall separation performance of MMMs for CO 2 /N 2 exceeds the 2008 Robson upper limit, showing outstanding gas separation performance.

Abstract:Brominated poly(2,6-diphenyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (BPPOdp) is synthesized as a new membrane material for gas separation. BPPOdp forms flexible membranes with higher CO2 permeability (P-CO2 = 78 Barrer) and selectivity (alpha(CO2/N2) = 30) than poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPOdm) membranes. BPPOdp also forms nanocomposite membranes with silica nanoparticles. The nanocomposite membranes have a greatly enhanced CO2 permeability while maintaining the CO2/N-2 and CO2/CH4 selectivities of the pure BPPOdp membranes. The CO2 permeability increases as the silica content increases in the membrane. The 10-nm silica nanoparticles are more effective at increasing the CO2 permeability than the 30-nm silica nanoparticles. Mechanism studies show that the enhanced permeability results from the nanogaps between the silica nanoparticles and the polymer chains due to their incompatibility.
