Abstract:Alumina–silica composite aerogels have drawn vast attention due to their enhanced thermal stability compared to pristine alumina aerogels. However, they are generally weakly-crystallized and tend to experience inevitable sintering and significant surface area loss especially above 1200 °C. In this study, we developed a hydrothermal treatment and supercritical drying strategy for synthesizing novel, well-crystallized, silica-modified boehmite aerogels and fiber-reinforced composites. For the prepared aerogel, network coarsening was significantly hindered and the α-Al2O3 transition was completely prevented even at 1400 °C. As a result, the aerogel exhibits extremely high surface area maintenance (87 % and 53 % after 1300 °C and 1400 °C calcination, respectively) and low linear shrinkage (14 % after 1300 °C calcination) at elevated temperatures. The composite with good toughness shows excellent heat resistance and thermal insulating performance up to 1500 °C. These findings provide a general, direct new idea to improve the thermal tolerance of alumina-based aerogels and extend their applications to higher temperatures.

Alumina-Doped Silica Aerogels for High-Temperature Thermal Insulation

Abstract:In this study, we used two methods to prepare alumina-doped silica aerogels with the aim of increasing the thermal stability of silica aerogels. The first method was physical doping of α-Al2O3 nano powders, and the second method was to create a chemical compound via the co-precursor of TEOS and AlCl3·6H2O in different proportions. The shrinkage, chemical composition, and specific surface area (SSA) of samples after heating at different temperatures were analyzed. Our results show that the silicon hydroxyl groups of samples derived from AlCl3·6H2O gradually decreased and nearly disappeared after heating at 800 °C, which indicates the complete dehydration of the silicon hydroxyl. Thus, the samples exhibited a large linear shrinkage and decreased SSA after high-temperature heat treatment. By contrast, samples doped with α-Al2O3 powders retained abundant silicon hydroxyl groups, and the 6.1 wt.% α-Al2O3-doped sample exhibited the lowest linear shrinkage of 11% and the highest SSA of 1056 m2/g after heat treatment at 800 °C. The alumina-doped silica aerogels prepared using a simple and low-price synthesized method pave the way for the low-cost and large-scale production of high-temperature thermal insulation.

Abstract:Aluminosilicate aerogels are promising thermal insulation materials for high temperature applications. In this study, aluminosilicate aerogels were effectively synthesised using affordable precursors: dispersible boehmite powder and waterglass solutions, with subsequent drying achieved by supercritical CO 2 processing. According to the evaluation of their properties, the Al–Si aerogels exhibited low densities (0.11 g/cm 3 ), low thermal conductivities (<0.021 W/m·K) and high specific surface areas (SSA) (516 m 2 /g for an Al:Si molar ratio of 3:1). When waterglass-based aerogel and aluminosilicate samples were treated at high temperature (1200 °C), the formation of mullite was demonstrated for the aluminosilicate aerogel with a molar ratio of Al:Si 3:1, which showed a higher value for SSA compared to the waterglass-based aerogel.

Abstract:The fabrication of insulation materials with ultralow thermal conductivity and excellent thermal stability at high temperatures (higher than 1200 °C) has remained an extremely challenging. In this study, we reported the manufacturing of mullite-based nanofibrous aerogels via the gel-casting and freeze drying methods using the electrospun nanofibers with different alumina/silica molar ratios (3:2, 3:1 and 3:0) as the matrix and silica sols as the high temperature binders. The formation process of the mullite-based fibrous aerogel and effect of aerogel composition on the sample physical and mechanical properties were investigated. All mullite-based nanofibrous aerogel show a similar multilevel pore structure. The minor pores were formed by the overlaps of nanofibers and were the fundamental porous structure of the aerogel, while the major pores was caused by the sublimation of the ice crystal. This unique multilevel pore structure make the mullite-based nanofibrous aerogels exhibit an ultralow density (34.64–48.89 mg/cm3) and low thermal conductivity (0.03274–0.04317 Wm−1 K−1) although the sintering temperature was as high as 1400 °C much higher than the service temperature of the traditional nanoparticle aerogel. In addition, besides controlling the fabrication parameters, the physical and mechanical properties could be also tuned by adjusting the composition of the nanofibers. The research of this work provides a new insight into the development of high efficient thermal insulation materials used at high temperatures.

Abstract:In this work, Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 aerogels with low thermal conductivity and high strength were prepared using methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) as a silica precursor through the sol-gel method and high-temperature calcination. The effects of silica precursor on the thermal conductivity, chemical structure, and pore structure of aerogel as well as the effects of calcination temperature on the thermal conductivity, and mechanical properties of aerogel were investigated. The results indicated that MTES can reduce thermal conductivity by changing the microstructure of aerogel compared with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The subsequent high-temperature calcination can further reduce thermal conductivity and improve mechanical properties. The prepared Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 aerogels have the characteristics of low thermal conductivity and high strength compared with previous reports. The Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 aerogels using MTES as silica precursor and calcined at 800 °C exhibited a density of 0.220 g/cm 3 , low thermal conductivity of 0.0232 W/(m·K), and a high compressive modulus of 74.29 MPa. In addition, the introduction of MTES can inhibit the sintering and phase transformation of alumina aerogel, and then improve the heat resistance of alumina aerogel. The specific surface areas of Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 aerogels before heat treatment, heat-treated at 1000 °C and heat-treated at 1200 °C are 639.68 m 2 /g, 337.28 m 2 /g, and 90.67 m 2 /g, respectively. This work provides a novel method for Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 aerogels to reduce thermal conductivity and improve mechanical properties.

Abstract:Highly thermally stable alumina-based aerogels are synthesized by the acetone–aniline in situ water formation method and modified by partially hydrolyzed aluminum tri-sec-butoxide at different temperatures (25, 45, and 60 °C). The effects of modification, especially modification temperature, on microstructure and thermal stability of alumina-based aerogels are investigated. After the modification, the morphologies of alumina-based aerogels change from the network structures with interconnected needle-like particles to those with stacked sheet-like particles, resulting in a better heat resistance. The thermal stability of alumina-based aerogels enhances with the increasing modification temperature, whereas the high temperature (more than 60 °C) would lead to the dissolution of wet gels during the modification process due to the high solubility. After annealing at 1200 °C for 2 h, the 45 °C-modified alumina-based aerogel exhibits the best thermal stability with the lowest linear shrinkage of ~7% and the highest specific surface area of 154 m2/g. In addition, the modified aerogels remain in the θ-Al2O3 phase while the unmodified one transforms into α-Al2O3 phase after 1300 °C annealing. The alumina-based aerogels are further reinforced by incorporating with mullite fiber felt and TiO2. The obtained composites show ultralow thermal conductivities of 0.065, 0.086, and 0.118 W/mK at 800, 1000, and 1200 °C, respectively.

Abstract:In this study, monolithic Al2O3–SiO2 aerogels with excellent thermal stability were synthesized by ambient pressure drying (APD) or supercritical drying (SCD) using tetraethyl orthosilicate and boehmite nanorods (L = 20–30 nm, D = 3–5 nm) as precursors. The high specific surface area of aerogels prepared by APD or SCD was maintained after calcination at 800 °C (585 m2/g or 664 m2/g), 1000 °C (415 m2/g or 487 m2/g), and 1100 °C (175 m2/g or 231 m2/g). The anti-sintering mechanism of the aerogels prepared with boehmite nanorods as the aluminum source was discussed in detail. Successful preparation by APD offers the possibility of low-cost and large-scale application of monolithic Al2O3–SiO2 aerogels. Al2O3–SiO2 aerogels with excellent thermal stability have the potential to be used as high-temperature thermal insulating materials in aerospace applications.

Abstract:Silica aerogels exhibit a unique nanostructure with low thermal conductivity and low density, making them attractive materials for thermal isolation under extreme conditions. The TiO2 particle is one of the common industrial additives used to reduce the thermal radiation of aerogel composites under high-temperature environments, but its influence on thermal resistance is almost unknown. Herein, we report the effect of TiO2 nanoparticles with different crystal phases and different sizes on the thermal stability of silica aerogel composites. By adding TiO2 nanoparticles, the aerogel can significantly resist collapse at high temperatures (up to 1000 °C). And compared with the rutile phase TiO2, the anatase phase TiO2 shows much higher temperature resistance performance, with shrinkage of only one-sixth of the rutile phase after 800 °C treatment. Interestingly, energy-dispersive spectrometer mapping results show that after 800 °C treatment, silica nanoparticles (NPs) are squeezed out in between anatase TiO2 particles, which resists the coarsening of silica NPs and ultimately enhances the stability of aerogel composites. The optimal anatase phase TiO2-doped silica aerogel demonstrates the integrated properties of crack-free morphology (2.84% shrinkage), low thermal conductivity (29.30 mW/(m·K)) and low density (149.4 mg/cm3) after 800 °C treatment. This study may provide new insights for developing oxide-doped silica aerogels with both high-temperature resistance and low thermal radiation.

Abstract:Alumina aerogels were prepared through the addition of propylene oxide to aqueous or ethanolic solutions of hydrated aluminum salts, AlCl3·6H2O or Al(NO3)3·9H2O, followed by drying with supercritical CO2. This technique affords low-density (60−130 kg/m3), high-surface-area (600−700 m2/g) alumina aerogel monoliths without the use of alkoxide precursors. The dried alumina aerogels were characterized using elemental analysis, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, solid-state NMR, acoustic measurements, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis. Powder X-ray diffraction and TEM analysis indicated that the aerogel prepared from hydrated AlCl3 in water or ethanol possessed microstructures containing highly reticulated networks of pseudoboehmite fibers, 2−5 nm in diameter and of varying lengths, whereas the aerogels prepared from hydrated Al(NO3)3 in ethanol were amorphous with microstructures comprised of interconnected spherical particles with diameters in the 5−15 nm range. The difference in microstructure resulted in each type of aerogel displaying distinct physical and mechanical properties. In particular, the alumina aerogels with the weblike microstructure were far more mechanically robust than those with the colloidal network, based on acoustic measurements. Both types of alumina aerogels can be transformed to γ-Al2O3 through calcination at 800 °C without a significant loss in surface area or monolithicity.

Abstract:We have developed a new sol-gel route to synthesise Al2O3-SiO2 composite aerogels with different alumina/silica (Al/Si) molar ratios using an inexpensive inorganic salt. The approach is straightforward, inexpensive, and it produces monolithic mesoporous material with high specific surface area heat-treated at elevated temperatures. The effects of different Al/Si molar ratios and calcination temperatures on the microstructures and properties of Al2O3-SiO2 composite aerogels are investigated in this study. Results show that SiO2 is essentially amorphous, while Al2O3 predominately exists as polycrystalline boehmite for the as-dried composite aerogels. With the increase of Al/Si molar ratios, the morphologies change from connected spheroidal particles to nanometer-sized fibrous particles and web-like microstructures with varying diameters. As the heat treatment temperature increases to 600 degrees C, structural transition from boehmite to gamma-Al2O3 occurs within all the composite aerogels, and mullitization firstly occurs with the Al/Si molar ratio of 1 at around 1000 degrees C. The specific surface area undergoes an increase-decrease-increase process at 600 degrees C and 1200 degrees C for the composite aerogels with different Al/Si molar ratios. The specific surface area is as high as 166 m(2) g(-1) at 1200 degrees C for the sample with an Al/Si molar ratio of 8, which is higher than ever reported. The thermal conductivities of mullite fiber mat reinforced aerogel composites at room temperatures are 0.023 W m(-1) K-1, 0.029 W m(-1) K-1 and 0.025 W m(-1) K-1 with the Al/Si molar ratios of 2, 3 and 8, respectively, suitable for efficient thermal insulations uses.

Abstract:Monolithic Al2O3-SiO2 composite aerogels were synthesized by using inexpensive aluminum chloride hexahydrate (AlCl3·6H2O) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). By adjusting the molar ratio of Al and Si, the best ratio of high-temperature resistance was found. The resultant aerogels (Al:Si = 9:1) exhibit high thermal performance, which can be identified by the low linear shrinkage of 5% and high specific surface area (SSA) of 283 m2/g at 1200 °C. Alumina in these aerogels mainly exists in the boehmite phase and gradually transforms into the θ-Al2O3 phase in the process of heating to 1200 °C. No α-Al2O3 is detected in the heating process. These Al2O3-SiO2 composite aerogels are derived from a simple, low-priced and safe method. With their high thermal performance, these aerogels will have a wide application in high-temperature field.

Abstract:Silica aerogels have gained much interest due to their unique properties, such as being the lightest solid material, having small pore sizes, high porosity, and ultralow thermal conductivity. Also, the advancements in synthesis methods have enabled the creation of silica aerogel-based composites in combination with different materials, for example, polymers, metals, and carbon-based structures. These new silica-based materials combine the properties of silica with the other materials to create a new and reinforced architecture with significantly valuable uses in different fields. Therefore, the importance of silica aerogels has been emphasized by presenting their properties, synthesis process, composites, and numerous applications, offering an updated background for further research in this interdisciplinary domain.

Abstract:Highly thermally stable zirconia/silica composite aerogels are prepared via a supercritical deposition method, which involves the deposition by zirconium alkoxide and partially hydrolyzed alkoxysilane during high-temperature ethanol supercritical fluid drying. The zirconia crystal growth and phase transition of the composite aerogels upon heat treatment are effectively inhibited by supercritical deposition, which significantly enhances the thermal stability of the aerogels. The resultant zirconia/silica composite aerogels exhibit a high specific surface area of 172 m2/g and a large pore volume of 0.97 cm3/g after heat treatment at 1000 °C. The resultant materials are promising candidates as high-temperature catalysts, catalyst supports, thermal insulators, etc.

Abstract:Aerogels are three-dimensional hierarchical nanoporous materials with many applications depending on their unique properties. Although silica aerogels have been studied extensively and industrialized, they cannot withstand high temperatures exceeding 650 °C for a long period. Metal oxide aerogels are the best candidates for high-temperature applications due to their excellent thermal and chemical stability. Among them, alumina, zirconia and titania aerogels show the best thermal stability and have drawn great attention in recent years. This paper overviews single-component metal oxide (alumina, zirconia, titania aerogels, and other metal oxide aerogels) and composite metal oxide aerogels (multicomponent composite aerogels and mechanical reinforced aerogels), including their preparation, characterization, and properties in high-temperature applications, to provide a helpful resource for researchers and technicians.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Maintaining high surface area and porosity at high temperatures is important when considering aerogels for use in thermal management systems. The mesoporous structure of aerogels results in extremely low thermal conductivity, making them lightweight, high performance insulating materials. Maintaining these properties requires innovative routes to suppress sintering and pore collapse as use temperatures rise. The current work aims to improve the pore structure stability of yttria‐stabilized zirconia aerogels by the addition of a SiO2 coating. The functionalization of surface hydroxyl groups by the addition of SiO2 is hypothesized to mitigate condensation reactions, which are a driving force for shrinkage and pore structure collapse. Zirconia aerogels with 0, 10, and 30 mol% yttria (YO1.5) additions were coated in a tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) solution and exposed to temperatures up to 1200°C. Crystal structure, pore structure, and aerogel morphology were investigated to understand changes in aerogel thermal stability. The SiO2 coating exhibited a greater influence on pore stability over yttria concentration, with specific surface area of the coated aerogels being twice that of the uncoated aerogels up to 1000°C. However, the presence of the SiO2 coating promoted rapid sintering and densification at 1200°C, establishing an upper use temperature for SiO2 and a need to develop other coating chemistries.

Abstract:Ceramic aerogels are considered as promising thermal insulation materials used in extreme environments. However, the combination of ultralight, high heat tolerance and ultra-low high-temperature thermal conductivity is still a great challenge for both brittle granular aerogels and micron-porous fibrous aerogels. Here, a dual-template strategy is proposed for the simple fabrication of high-performance nanoporous ceramic aerogels (SARAs) by adopting one-dimensional high-crystallinity and high-aspect-ratio Al2O3 nanorods as the basic unit. After delicate design of the composition and pore structures, SARAs exhibit excellent comprehensive properties including ultra-low density (8.12–28.43 mg cm−3), low room temperature thermal conductivity (down to 0.0246 W m−1 K−1) and extremely high temperature resistance (up to 1400 °C). In addition, the unique nanoporous structure lapped by nanorods also confer SARAs superior high-temperatures thermal insulation performance (0.0949 W m−1 K−1 at 1000 °C). The successful preparation of nanorod aerogels with fascinating properties not only provides a new vision on the pore structure regulation of aerogels for thermal insulation, but also offers an opportunity to develop new ultralight functional ceramic aerogels.

Abstract:Silica aerogel is a unique nanomaterial with three-dimensional nano-porous networks. However, the microstructures of aerogels are easily damaged at high temperatures environment, weakening the thermal insulation performance. In this work, we prepared thermally stable SiOC nanospheres and then composited them with aerogel matrix. SiOC nanospheres and aerogel matrix have excellent compatibility. SiOC nanospheres can induce the aerogel matrix forming island microstructures after drying process. The presence of the island microstructure leads to a reduce of the inter-skeleton macropore size, which declines from 4.77 μm to 2 μm. The thermal conductivity decreases from 0.0813 to 0.0646 W/ (m K). The volume shrinkage and density also show a clear downward trend. In order to investigate the impact of high-temperature to thermal insulation performance, the aerogel composites are experienced different high-temperature treatment. The results demonstrate that the island microstructure of aerogel is transformed into a spherical shape after high-temperature treatment. The particle diameter increases from 5 μm to 5.7 μm when treated in 200 °C and 400 °C. Upon 400 °C, the diameter reduces from 5.7 μm to 4.4 μm at 800 °C. The variety in the size of the aerogel skeleton particles results in a reduction in the pore diameters of the interskeleton pores from 8 to 3.8 μm. The thermal conductivity decreases from 0.0667 to 0.0466 W/ (m K) treating below 400 °C and increases to 0.0712 W/ (m K), when heat treatment temperature is 800 °C. The enhancement of thermal insulation performance is attributed to the decline of macropores content between skeletons caused by swelling of aerogel particles. The diameters of macropores between skeletons reduce, which can effectively weaken the influence of gaseous heat transfer. This work provides a reference for the preparation of aerogel composites that can maintain excellent thermal insulation properties in high-temperature environment.

Abstract:Heat transfer via the solid backbone is low for aerogel due to its ultrahigh porosity,and heat transfer via gaseous phase is inhibited due to its network structure consisting of mesopores(2-50nm)and nanoparticles.The incorporation of so-called infrared opacifiers decreases the radiative heat transfer through reflecting,absorption and scattering processes.Thus,aerogel possesses a quite low thermal conductivity,thus can be used as efficient thermal insulation.Aerogels can be classified into three different categories,i.e.oxide aerogels,carbon aerogels and carbide aerogels,according to their constituents.Oxide aerogels possess relatively low thermal resistance due to their phase changes and particles sintering,but they obtain rather low thermal conductivity.Carbon aerogels have controllable densities and rather high thermal resistance(3000℃)under vacuum or inert atmosphere.The thermal conductivity at2000 ℃ under argon atmosphere is only 0.601W·m-1·K-1,however carbon combustion easily happens in oxidizing atmosphere.This can be solved by coating with some oxidation resistance coatings on the surface of carbon aerogels.There are insufficient studies for carbide aerogels,which mainly concern over SiC aerogel and concentrate on their preparation methods and characterizations,while little attention is paid to their thermal properties of carbide aerogels.Herein,the advances in research of the three different kinds of aerogels are presented,followed by outlook of these high temperature resistant aerogel insulations.

Abstract:We have developed a new sol gel route to synthesize Al2O3-SiO2 composite aerogel using inexpensive inorganic salt of aluminum. The approach, which is straightforward, inexpensive, and safe, can be employed to produce a monolithic mesoporous material with a high specific surface area, which is heat-treated at high temperatures. The results show that SiO2 is essentially amorphous, whereas Al2O3 predominately exists as polycrystalline boehmite which consists of fibrous particles and web-like microstructures. As the heat treatment temperature increases to 600 degrees C, the structural transition from boehmite to gamma-Al2O3 occurs within the composite. When the composite is heat-treated at 1100 degrees C, SiO2 crystallization occurs and the mullite phase begins to appear. The specific surface area decreases with an increase in heat treatment temperatures; however, it remains 120 m(2)/g until 1200 degrees C. The heat treatment process improves the quality of the three-dimensional aerogel network, and the pore distribution becomes uniform after heat treatment. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.
