Abstract:Innovations in the physical sciences face unique challenges and barriers as they transition from concept to product, and finally to profitable business. Specifically, time horizons are much longer and early-stage capital needs are much higher than for alternative investments in, for example, information technology or consumer electronics. Universities with significant research programs in the physical sciences are most significantly affected as early-stage investors who are willing to accept high risk and the associated liquidity penalty become scarce. A potential solution to this dilemma is the implementation of a lab-to-market roadmap within the university infrastructure to align process, metrics and funding, with the goal of guiding technology translation in a disciplined fashion, while generating meaningful returns at low risk to the institution. Such a roadmap for early-stage technology entrepreneurship is described here, with start-up activity integrated into the universities’ research activity and with a focus on three critical success factors: (1) a robust process for start-up activity; (2) an educational program that teaches the process and helps participants to implement it; and (3) an infrastructure that creates the appropriate environment for academic organizations to effectively develop innovations into products that are positioned to become great companies. For examples of the methodology, a case study for the start-up process (Cronos Integrated Microsystems) is reviewed and a successful lab-to-market case study at Duke University is also provided.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the innovative capabilities of biotech start-ups in relation to geographic proximity and knowledge sharing interaction in the R&D network of a major high-tech cluster. Design-methodology-approach: This study compares longitudinal informal communication networks of researchers at biotech start-ups with company patent applications in subsequent years. For a year, senior R&D staff members from over 70 biotech firms located in the Boston biotech cluster were polled and communication information about interaction with peers, universities and big pharmaceutical companies was collected, as well as their geolocation tags. Findings: Location influences the amount of communication between firms, but not their innovation success. Rather, what matters is communication intensity and recollection by others. In particular, there is evidence that rotating leadership - changing between a more active and passive communication style - is a predictor of innovative performance. Practical implications: Expensive real-estate investments can be replaced by maintaining social ties. A more dynamic communication style and more diverse social ties are beneficial to innovation. Originality-value: Compared to earlier work that has shown a connection between location, network and firm performance, this paper offers a more differentiated view; including a novel measure of communication style, using a unique data set and providing new insights for firms who want to shape their communication patterns to improve innovation, independently of their location.

Abstract:The world of biotechnology "start-ups" and entrepreneurship offers exciting new avenues for driving state-of-the-art research using an arsenal of multidisciplinary skills, whether your role is as part of a team or as a leader. Although traditionally these positions may not be as secure as those offered by some of the larger companies, the small start-up culture provides opportunities for contributing at many levels to a wide range of responsibilities: from scientific discovery to delivery of proof of concept and intellectual property; from analysis of market opportunities and competitive intelligence to creation of time lines and business plans for a first product. Often, if you get in on the ground level, you get to validate your own concept, pitch to potential investors, argue value, build a team, engage advisors, and then, with funding in hand, launch an entirely new research and development (R&D) enterprise. Many of the skills and much of the experience gained while pursuing a graduate degree can be put to good use in these arenas as well. This path, however, is not for the faint of heart; it requires not only a strong scientific background and organizational skills, but also the ability to work well on a team, excellent communication skills, and persistence when faced with delays or disappointment. With increasing responsibilities in the small company come the requirements for aptitudes for leadership, strategic and financial planning, networking, negotiating, and managing both projects and personnel.

Abstract:Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Ahead of Print. Research shows that early internationalization is more likely when founders have international and business-related experience. But what if experience was obtained in other ways? We study the scientist-founders of 149 academic spin-offs (ASOs), using cognition theory to argue for a curvilinear relationship between breadth of pre-founding R&D collaboration and internationalization timing. Our longitudinal study combines survey and patent data to show that increased breadth of collaboration with international scientists increases and then decreases the likelihood of early internationalization. The results are similar but less robust for collaboration with industry partners. Our findings suggest that studies on experience in new venture internationalization underestimate the role of R&D collaboration and the research-based heritage of many new firms.

Abstract:The accelerating pace of technological advancements necessitates specialised expertise and cutting‐edge instruments to maintain competitive research in life sciences. Core facilities – collaborative laboratories equipped with state‐of‐the‐art tools and staffed by expert personnel – are vital resources that support diverse scientific endeavours. However, their adoption in lower‐income communities has been comparatively stagnant due to both financial and cultural challenges. This paper explores the perils of not supporting core facilities on national research enterprises, underscoring the need for balanced investments in discovery science and crucial infrastructure support. We explore the implications from the perspectives of funders, university leaders and lab heads. We advocate for a paradigm shift to recognise these facilities as essential components of national research efforts. Core facilities are positioned not as optional but as strategic investments that can catalyse breakthroughs, particularly in environments with limited resources.

Abstract:DIYbio challenges the status quo by positioning laboratory biology work outside of traditional institutions. HCI has increasingly explored the DIYbio movement, but we lack insight into sites of practice such as community biolabs. Therefore, we gathered data on eleven community biolabs by interviewing sixteen lab managers and members. These labs represent half of identified organizations in scope worldwide. Participants detailed their practices and motivations, outlining the constraints and opportunities of their community biolabs. We found that lab members conducted technically challenging project work with access to high-end equipment and professional expertise. We found that the unique nature of biowork exacerbated challenges for cooperative work, partially due to the particular time sensitivities of work with living organisms. Building on our findings, we discuss how community biolab members are creating new approaches to laboratory biology and how this has design implications for systems that support non-traditional settings for scientific practice.

Abstract:This article illustrates how open hardware solutions are implemented by researchers as a strategy to access technology for cutting-edge research. Specifically, it is discussed what kind of open technologies are most enabling in scientific environments characterized by economic and infrastructural constraints. It is demonstrated that do-it-yourself (DIY) technologies are already wide spread, in particular in countries with lower science funding, which in turn is the basis for the development of open technologies. Beyond financial accessibility, open hardware can be transformational to the technology access of laboratories through advantages in local production and direct knowledge transfer. Central drivers of the adoption of appropriate technologies in biolabs globally are open sharing, digital fabrication, local production, standard parts use, and detailed documentation.

Abstract:Laboratory research is a complex, collaborative process that involves several stages, including hypothesis formulation, experimental design, data generation and analysis, and manuscript writing. Although reproducibility and data sharing are increasingly prioritized at the publication stage, integrating these principles at earlier stages of laboratory research has been hampered by the lack of broadly applicable solutions. Here, we propose that the workflow used in modern software development offers a robust framework for enhancing reproducibility and collaboration in laboratory research. In particular, we show that GitHub, a platform widely used for collaborative software projects, can be effectively adapted to organize and document all aspects of a research project's lifecycle in a molecular biology laboratory. We outline a three-step approach for incorporating the GitHub ecosystem into laboratory research workflows: 1. designing and organizing experiments using issues and project boards, 2. documenting experiments and data analyses with a version control system, and 3. ensuring reproducible software environments for data analyses and writing tasks with containerized packages. The versatility, scalability, and affordability of this approach make it suitable for various scenarios, ranging from small research groups to large, cross-institutional collaborations. Adopting this framework from a project's outset can increase the efficiency and fidelity of knowledge transfer within and across research laboratories. Evaluating "startup readiness" for researchers: case studies of research-based startups with biopharmaceutical research topics

Abstract:For research domains such as life sciences, which pursue fundamental scientific understanding and applications intended for immediate use, academic entrepreneurship has played a pivotal role in commercialization. This paper presents an evaluation method of researchers related to user-inspired fundamental research, using global databases of startup finances and academic research papers of "startup readiness." Case studies of startups related to biopharmaceutical research topics suggest that the biopharmaceutical field has rich opportunities stemming from scientific research, commercialization, and entrepreneurship. This evaluation method sorts specific industry segments by which financing activities are active, and by which related growing research topics attract increased academic attention. We constructed networks of author citation and co-authorship from paper citation networks related to research topics in industry segments in the biopharmaceutical domain. Results obtained across all research topics we surveyed demonstrated that authors in the top 10% of degree centrality ranking in both networks are far more likely to be startup participants than other authors. Our computational approach might provide convenient, dynamic, global, and real-time understanding of the "startup readiness" of researchers working with research topics for which academic attention is emerging in actively financed biopharmaceutical fields.

Abstract:Premise Low‐cost, repairable lab equipment is rare within the biological sciences. By lowering the costs of entry using 3D printing and open‐source hardware, our goal is to empower both amateur and professional scientists to conduct research. Methods We developed a modular system of 3D‐printable designs called COBLE (Collection of Bespoke Laboratory Equipment), including novel and remixed 3D‐printable lab equipment that can be inexpensively printed, assembled, and repaired for a fraction of the cost of retail equivalents. Results Here we present novel tools that utilize 3D printing to enable a wide range of scientific experiments. We include additional resources for scientists and labs that are interested in utilizing 3D printing for their research. Discussion By describing the broad potential that 3D‐printed designs can have in the biological sciences, we hope to inspire others to implement and improve upon these designs, improving accessibility and enabling science for all.

Abstract:Science is an inherently collaborative enterprise and this trend has accelerated over the past few decades. In particular, the Internet creates new possibilities for the organization of joint scientific work, specifically among geographically separated collaborators. A notable instance of Internet-mediated science is the collaboratory, or a laboratory without walls, where scientists are connected to each other, to instruments, and to data independent of time and location. This paper explores past and current collaboratory efforts to identify both characteristics that define a collaboratory and factors of collaboratory use that predict scientific success and failure. The paper concludes with an assessment of directions for future collaboratory development.

Abstract:Following the footprints of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, there has been a misconception that students are better off quitting their studies to bring to life their ideas, create jobs and monetize their inventions. Having historically transitioned from manpower to mind power, we live in one of the most rapidly changing times in human history. As a result, academic institutions that are supposed to be pioneers and educators of the next generations have started to realize that they need to adapt to a new system, and change their policies to be more flexible towards patent ownership and commercialization. There is an infrastructure being developed towards students starting their own businesses while continuing with their studies. This paper aims to provide an overview of the existing landscape, the exciting rewards as well as risks awaiting a student entrepreneur, the challenges of the present ecosystem, and questions to consider prior to embarking on such a journey. Various entities influencing the start-up environment are considered, specifically for the medical technology sector. These parties include but are not limited to: scientists, clinicians, investors, academic institutions and governments. A special focus will be set on the seemingly unbridgeable gap between founding a company and a scientific career.

Abstract:Patents serve as valuable indicators of innovation and provide insights into the spaces of innovation and venture formation within geographic regions. In this study, we utilise patent data to examine the dynamics of innovation and venture formation in the biotech sector across the United Kingdom (UK). By analysing patents, we identify key regions that drive biotech innovation in the UK. Our findings highlight the crucial role of biotech incubators in facilitating knowledge exchange between scientific research and industry. However, we observe that the incubators themselves do not significantly contribute to the diversity of innovations which might be due to the underlying effect of geographic proximity on the influences and impact of the patents. These insights contribute to our understanding of the historical development and future prospects of the biotech sector in the UK, emphasising the importance of promoting innovation diversity and fostering inclusive enterprise for achieving equitable economic growth.

Collaboration in Coworking Spaces: Impact on Firm Innovativeness and Business Models

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the debate as to whether collaboration in coworking spaces contributes to firm innovativeness and impacts the business models of organizations in a positive manner. Methodology: This paper includes primary data from 75 organizations in 17 coworking spaces and uses quantitative research methods. The methodology includes multiple statistical methods, such as principal component analysis, correlation analysis as well as linear and binary regression analysis. Results: The results show a positive interrelation between collaboration and innovation, indicating that coworkers are able to improve their innovative capabilities by making use of strategic partnerships in coworking spaces. Further, this study shows that business models are significantly affected by the level of collaboration in coworking spaces, which suggests that coworking is a promoting force for business model development or business model innovation. Contributions: The paper contributes to management literature and represents the first empirical investigations which focuses on the effects of collaboration on a firm-level in coworking spaces. Practical implications: The results indicate that organizations in coworking spaces should embrace a collaborative mindset and should actively seek out collaborative alliances and partnerships, as doing such is shown to increase their innovativeness and/or develop their business model. Future Research: Future research should focus on the antecedents of collaboration or could investigate the effects of collaboration in coworking spaces on a community level.
