Abstract:Based on 454 articles related to college students' entrepreneurial intention in the Web of Science Core Collection, this study explores the hotspots and trends of international research on college students' entrepreneurial intention by using a combination of coding and bibliometric analysis. The research hotspots are as follows: the theory of planned behavior is the main theoretical basis of these studies; entrepreneurship education is a more important predictor of college students' entrepreneurial intention, and this relationship is regulated by multiple variables; personal traits, several types of capital theories, social entrepreneurial intention, and quantitative research methods are also common. The research fronts include the following: systematic review of the field, continuous attention to the theory of planned behavior, and in-depth exploration of the differentiated influence of entrepreneurship education on entrepreneurial intention. Finally, we proposed research thinking and prospects related to research on undergraduates' entrepreneurial intention and entrepreneurship education.

Abstract:This report presents dietary intake estimates for selected minerals from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999-2000, for the U.S. population. These minerals included: calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sodium, and zinc. Mineral intakes are estimated from one 24-hour dietary recall interview. Population means, medians, and standard errors of the mean are weighted to produce national estimates, and are presented by sex and age groups. Assessment of dietary intakes is an important part of monitoring the nutritional status of the U.S. population.

Abstract:The increasing importance of academic entrepreneurship as a key mechanism for new innovative advancements and regional economic developments fostered a development of this research domain. The burgeoning literature examining key antecedents and consequences of academic entrepreneurship resulted in complex, multifaceted concept development, which hinder both the possibilities to grasp the crucial interlinkages and a comprehensive assessment of the latest theoretical contributions. Thus, to decrease the current risk of the field's further fragmentation and to support the comparison with the new emerging patterns, this paper seeks to develop new bibliometric insights and outline a nuanced research agenda for further advancements. To conduct a quantitative literature review, this paper employs bibliographic coupling on a sample of 615 Web of Science peer-reviewed articles on academic entrepreneurship. To conduct a comprehensive interpretation of the bibliometric findings, I perform additional hierarchical clustering of the frequent terms and content analysis of the publications. The results indicate that the academic entrepreneurship research field is based on four interconnected clusters: (1) the anatomy of an entrepreneurial university and its main components, (2) university spinoffs and technology commercialization, (3) the identities of academic entrepreneurs and their motivations and barriers in entrepreneurial activities, and (4) knowledge transfer and regional economic impacts. These findings are of high importance to academics who seek to enhance entrepreneurial processes and to policymakers interested in stimulating academic entrepreneurship.

Abstract:Innovations in the physical sciences face unique challenges and barriers as they transition from concept to product, and finally to profitable business. Specifically, time horizons are much longer and early-stage capital needs are much higher than for alternative investments in, for example, information technology or consumer electronics. Universities with significant research programs in the physical sciences are most significantly affected as early-stage investors who are willing to accept high risk and the associated liquidity penalty become scarce. A potential solution to this dilemma is the implementation of a lab-to-market roadmap within the university infrastructure to align process, metrics and funding, with the goal of guiding technology translation in a disciplined fashion, while generating meaningful returns at low risk to the institution. Such a roadmap for early-stage technology entrepreneurship is described here, with start-up activity integrated into the universities’ research activity and with a focus on three critical success factors: (1) a robust process for start-up activity; (2) an educational program that teaches the process and helps participants to implement it; and (3) an infrastructure that creates the appropriate environment for academic organizations to effectively develop innovations into products that are positioned to become great companies. For examples of the methodology, a case study for the start-up process (Cronos Integrated Microsystems) is reviewed and a successful lab-to-market case study at Duke University is also provided.
MedTech start-ups: A comprehensive scoping review of current research trends and future directions

Abstract:Medical start-ups (MedTech) significantly contribute to the development and commercialization of innovative healthcare solutions, driving advancements in technology, enhancing treatment effectiveness, and supporting public health. This study explores the main themes and concepts related to MedTech start-ups, examines the research methods used, and identifies major gaps in the literature. A scoping literature review was performed by searching the Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases for publications from 2012 to 2023, focusing on MedTech start-ups in titles, abstracts, and keywords. References were analyzed using the Bibliometrix package in R, and a coupling network analysis was conducted, visualizing results on a Coupling Map to identify key research themes and gaps. The research identified 480 unique articles on MedTech start-ups. After removing duplicates and following a PRISMA-based assessment, 79 articles were included in the review. The studies predominantly focused on organizations, including start-ups and Venture Capital funds (46%). Most articles (60%) used qualitative methods, 25% employed mixed methods, and 15% used quantitative methods. Geographically, 63% of articles focused on a single country, primarily the USA (35%), followed by Iran, Sweden, Switzerland, China, and Japan (2-4% each). Coupling analysis identified five topic clusters: crowdfunding for medical research, innovation in medical technology, new product development, digital start-ups, and the venture capital industry. This review highlights the significant role of MedTech start-ups in advancing healthcare innovations despite challenges like regulatory hurdles and high capital requirements. The literature emphasizes the importance of collaboration among universities, industry, and government for successful commercialization. The geographic concentration in the USA indicates a need for more inclusive research. Crowdfunding and venture capital emerge as crucial funding sources, suggesting strategies to mitigate risks and enhance innovation success.
The Influence of Biomedical Research on Future Business Funding: Analyzing Scientific Impact and Content in Industrial Investments

Abstract:This paper investigates the relationship between scientific innovation in biomedical sciences and its impact on industrial activities, focusing on how the historical impact and content of scientific papers influenced future funding and innovation grant application content for small businesses. The research incorporates bibliometric analyses along with SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) data to yield a holistic view of the science-industry interface. By evaluating the influence of scientific innovation on industry across 10,873 biomedical topics and taking into account their taxonomic relationships, we present an in-depth exploration of science-industry interactions where we quantify the temporal effects and impact latency of scientific advancements on industrial activities, spanning from 2010 to 2021. Our findings indicate that scientific progress substantially influenced industrial innovation funding and the direction of industrial innovation activities. Approximately 76% and 73% of topics showed a correlation and Granger-causality between scientific interest in papers and future funding allocations to relevant small businesses. Moreover, around 74% of topics demonstrated an association between the semantic content of scientific abstracts and future grant applications. Overall, the work contributes to a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the science-industry interface, opening avenues for more strategic resource allocation and policy developments aimed at fostering innovation.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the innovative capabilities of biotech start-ups in relation to geographic proximity and knowledge sharing interaction in the R&D network of a major high-tech cluster. Design-methodology-approach: This study compares longitudinal informal communication networks of researchers at biotech start-ups with company patent applications in subsequent years. For a year, senior R&D staff members from over 70 biotech firms located in the Boston biotech cluster were polled and communication information about interaction with peers, universities and big pharmaceutical companies was collected, as well as their geolocation tags. Findings: Location influences the amount of communication between firms, but not their innovation success. Rather, what matters is communication intensity and recollection by others. In particular, there is evidence that rotating leadership - changing between a more active and passive communication style - is a predictor of innovative performance. Practical implications: Expensive real-estate investments can be replaced by maintaining social ties. A more dynamic communication style and more diverse social ties are beneficial to innovation. Originality-value: Compared to earlier work that has shown a connection between location, network and firm performance, this paper offers a more differentiated view; including a novel measure of communication style, using a unique data set and providing new insights for firms who want to shape their communication patterns to improve innovation, independently of their location.

Abstract:The world of biotechnology "start-ups" and entrepreneurship offers exciting new avenues for driving state-of-the-art research using an arsenal of multidisciplinary skills, whether your role is as part of a team or as a leader. Although traditionally these positions may not be as secure as those offered by some of the larger companies, the small start-up culture provides opportunities for contributing at many levels to a wide range of responsibilities: from scientific discovery to delivery of proof of concept and intellectual property; from analysis of market opportunities and competitive intelligence to creation of time lines and business plans for a first product. Often, if you get in on the ground level, you get to validate your own concept, pitch to potential investors, argue value, build a team, engage advisors, and then, with funding in hand, launch an entirely new research and development (R&D) enterprise. Many of the skills and much of the experience gained while pursuing a graduate degree can be put to good use in these arenas as well. This path, however, is not for the faint of heart; it requires not only a strong scientific background and organizational skills, but also the ability to work well on a team, excellent communication skills, and persistence when faced with delays or disappointment. With increasing responsibilities in the small company come the requirements for aptitudes for leadership, strategic and financial planning, networking, negotiating, and managing both projects and personnel.
Exploring the entrepreneurial landscape of university-industry collaboration on public university spin-off creation: A systematic literature review

Abstract:Research into the factors influencing university-industry collaboration on public university spin-offs creation has focused on management, entrepreneurship, technology and innovation. This research began with a careful systematic literature review of 4427 scientific papers published in the last ten years (2014-2023) and accessible in the prestigious Web of Science core collection. A quantitative methodology was used, complemented by the use of the visual analysis tool Posit PBC™, formerly known as R Cloud Studio. This comprehensive approach facilitated the seamless ingestion of raw data into Biblioshyni, which is a web-based platform specialised in bibliometric analysis. This review has revealed compelling trends, particularly in terms of increasing diversity, the emergence of United Kingdom as a major player, and the central role of university-industry collaboration. Our systematic review identified influential authors in the field, including the prolific contributions of scholars such as D. Radicid, S. Ropers, Y. Li and R. Owen. We also identified important research institutions, such as Utrecht University in Netherlands, Lund University in Sweden and The University of Manchester in the UK. In addition, we have shown that countries such as the United Kingdom, China and USA have made a significant contribution to the volume of publications. The results highlighted a marked increase in the phenomenon of univeristy spin-offs over the past decade, as evidenced by the exponential growth in both publication output and citation rates. This empirical revelation was underpinned by a rigorous exploration of the Web of Science database, using a carefully crafted set of keywords. Thirty-seven pivotal studies were selected for in-depth review through a sophisticated selection process that adhered to the rigorous standards of the PRISMA methodology. The aim of this review is to improve understanding and encourage deeper exploration of spin-off-based public universities through collaboration between academia and industry.
Knowledge Networks for New Technology-Based Firms: an International Comparison of Local Entrepreneurship Promotion

Abstract:This paper reports on an international comparison of three organisations established to promote new business start–ups in the USA, UK and Canada. A ‘knowledge–based’ approach is adopted to examine how networks of would–be entrepreneurs interact with networks of experienced entrepreneurs and managers, venture capitalists, technical experts, consultants, IPR lawyers and other specialists. This interaction is promoted and mediated at the local level by the three organisations at the centre of the study: the Austin Technology Incubator (ATI), Texas; Connect, Edinburgh; and the Canadian Environmental Technology Advancement Corporation (CETAC–West) in Canada. These act as local network–nodes or ‘knowledge integrators’, as well as ‘incubating’ new ventures to increase the new business ‘birth rate’ in their respective regions. The comparison is based on interviews and secondary data that describe the initiation, development, operation and local impact of these organisations. Findings stress the importance of the regional context as a source of particular kinds of knowledge and expertise that may promote or inhibit new technology–based business start–ups. In particular: the scale, scope and quality of ideas and business proposals in local networks; the availability of relevant expertise and experience for ‘intelligent selection’ and for successful mentoring; the nature of rewards and incentives for all players; and the importance of local champions or figureheads, are all factors that help explain differences across the example regions. The paper combines a variety of conceptual approaches around the idea of regional knowledge networks which underpin ‘distributed innovation’. Heightened technological and market uncertainty for new technology–based firms places a premium on the ability of entrepreneurs to integrate specialist knowledge and utilise expertise from a variety of local sources. Despite differences in the scale, scope and effectiveness of their efforts we conclude that all three organisations are supporting ‘accelerated learning’ amongst entrepreneurs.
Navigating the Startup Landscape: The Social Impact of Venture Capital

Abstract:Over the past few decades, venture capital has become increasingly popular as an effective financing tool for high-risk start-ups compared to traditional financial instruments. A combination of scientific, technical, economic, environmental and social aspects is leading to positive developments in venture capital investment. As more and more venture capital is invested in startups, less and less attention is paid by investors to the social aspects of investing. The main goal of venture capitalists is to make profits in the long run. The purpose of the study was to analyze the social impact of venture capital in startups and its relationship with the economic impact of the investment. In order to achieve the research objective, the method of systematic literature review was identified as the most appropriate method according to the previously established inclusion criteria. The results of the study showed that the main aspect that is determinant in the venture capital investment process is the logic followed by investors at different institutional levels. The analysis analyzed and compared the logic that pursues the financial goals of the activity and the logic that pursues the social goals of the investors and the startup team. As a result of the study, it was possible to establish that venture capitalists have a contradiction between the commercial logic and the social logic of the startup's functioning. It was found that this aspect is predetermined by institutional aspects such as mission, values, management models and decision logics. The results of this study have both practical and scientific significance. Although in modern conditions it is possible to achieve success if measures to promote sustainable functioning are implemented comprehensively, touching social, environmental and economic aspects at the same time. The scientific significance of this study is to better understand the relationship between economic and social aspects of venture capital for start-ups. The practical relevance of this study is that for startup founders, the results of this study can be a basis for properly designing institutional aspects to better attract investors.

Abstract:One of the most valid definitions for the concept of "survival" is the possibility of paying salaries and wages to the startup's employees and owners for at least 42 months. Given that the highest failure rate of businesses is in the early years paying attention to the factors affecting new firms' performance processes will reduce their failure rate, leading to success, growth and sustainability. This article, reviews and analyzes all the articles in the Scopus database that are related to the survival of firms in terms of their number over time, the most common keywords, authors, journals, and countries publishing these articles, bibliometric method, and VOSviewer software are used. In the following, the factors that have been emphasized and repeated in the literature have been identified with a systematic literature review and meta-synthesis method. In the bibliometric section, 1959 articles have been analyzed and in the meta-synthesis review section, 85 articles have deeply been studied. Based on the findings of the research, 32 main factors affect the survival of businesses, which are categorized into five general categories including individual, organizational, supporters, financial, and environmental factors, and presented in a conceptual framework model.

Abstract:This study presents a bibliometric analysis of scientific publications investigating entrepreneurial universities in the business and management fields. The authors collected 511 documents from the Web of Science and analysed them using Bibliometrix, an RStudio package for performance analysis and science mapping. The study aims to provide an overview of the evolution of research about this topic and describe the structures (i.e., conceptual, social, and intellectual) characterising it. It discusses the results to identify the main areas addressed so far and highlight gaps in the literature, offering avenues for possible future research. The results show that publications on entrepreneurial universities started over 30 years ago and show an increasing trend, more than tripling in the last 10 years. Considering authors and documents as a unit of analysis, the US and Europe perform well in terms of productivity and relevance, but the phenomenon is globally relevant. The contribution to socio-economic development, especially in developing countries, is a hot topic for future studies. Despite increasing production rates, research on this topic remains fragmented, justifying the need for more systematisation. Furthermore, the paper offers policy makers and practitioners a useful baseline for developing entrepreneurial universities and considering their technological, managerial, and organisational implications.

Regional Entrepreneurial Opportunities in the Biotech Industry: Exploring the Transition from Award-Winning Nascent Entrepreneurs to Real Start-Ups

Abstract:Knowledge of factors that determine the transition from nascent entrepreneurship to real entrepreneurship is of major importance for policies aiming to stimulate start-ups effectively. Scholars have concentrated mainly on person-specific factors to explain transition probabilities, and environmental characteristics have been relatively neglected. Given that entrepreneurship is a strongly localized phenomenon, this paper argues that regional entrepreneurial opportunities are a driving force behind the transition from nascent entrepreneurship to new venture creation. Based on unique data from 103 nascent entrepreneurs in the German biotechnology industry, we empirically assess the importance of regional entrepreneurial opportunities for transition probabilities. Further, we introduce a new approach to measure nascent entrepreneurship by capturing details of individuals who participate actively in start-up competitions and have won at least one of these. Controlling for technology and individual characteristics, we find strong support for our hypotheses relating to the significant impact of general regional opportunities, specific regional opportunities and the entrepreneurial environment on the probability of transition from award-winning nascent entrepreneurs to real start-ups.

Abstract:A case of malignant fibroxanthoma of the retroperitoneum in a 66‐year‐old man is reported. It was discovered late in its clinical course and at an advanced stage the necropsy revealed metastases to the mesenteric lymph nodes, lungs, bone marrow, and heart. Histologically, the growth was characterized by a mixture of fibroblasts, benign‐appearing and often foamy histiocytes, and multinucleated cells, many of which were of the “Touton” type. Both the primary tumor and the metastases showed no cytologic features of malignancy and very few mitotic figures. This is the first case in which the metastatic lesions have been described and documented in detail.

Plasma levels of soluble thrombomodulin increase in cases of disseminated intravascular coagulation with organ failure

Abstract:We examined the changes in plasma levels of soluble thrombomodulin in 66 cases of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), to investigate the damage to vascular endothelial cells and its relationship to multiple organ failure. A significant elevation of plasma levels of soluble thrombomodulin was observed in most cases of DIC, especially in patients with sepsis. However, no such significant elevation was observed in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia. Plasma levels of both soluble thrombomodulin and active plasminogen activator inhibitor were higher in the cases of DIC with multiple organ failure than in those without multiple organ failure. The levels of soluble thrombomodulin were decreased with the clinical improvement in most cases of DIC but were further increased or remained at high levels in patients who showed no improvement of DIC. It was suggested that an increase in soluble thrombomodulin indicates the damage to the vascular endothelial cells in cases of DIC and that the damage to vascular endothelial cells plays some role in further progression of multiple organ failure.
An Innovative Biomedical Research Training Model: Rationale, Design, and Evaluation

Abstract:Much is told regarding the need for greater diversity in the biomedical research workforce in terms of race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. However, there are few evidence-based models that are tested and can have significant effects in this regard. Thus, there is a need for development and evaluation of innovative models that may help train a more diverse biomedical research workforce. In this study, we provided the rationale, conceptual model, and preliminary evaluation of a program called “A Student-Centered Entrepreneurship Development (ASCEND)”. This training program was designed, implemented, and evaluated between 2017 and 2020 at Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland, United States. The program’s conceptual model is based on four stages: Attraction and Inspiration, Ideation and Innovation, Research Implementation, and Career Growth. Results of the comparative survey between 50 students who participated in ASCEND and 86 non-member controls showed an increase in science identity, academic self-concept, science self-efficacy, and peer support. The only domain that did not show a larger increase in participants in our program compared to controls was social self-concept. In addition, a total of 59 students submitted 48 research concepts, and 16 undergraduate student projects were funded. Of participants in the Health Research Concepts Competition, 39 students graduated, and 13 were pursuing graduate programs in STEM fields at the time of evaluation. The number of research projects and trainees who started a graduate degree were also reported. The ASCEND training model fosters an entrepreneurial mindset among undergraduate students. Such a program might be effective in diversifying the biomedical research workforce. While this preliminary evaluation indicates the efficacy of the ASCEND model, there is a need for further long-term and multi-center evaluations with the trainees’ research productivity and receipt of independent funding as outcomes.

Abstract:The funding landscape for startups has recently changed significantly. Not only have new funding partners emerged but established funding partners have also changed their behaviors. Startups can choose among different sources and regularly ask for more than monetary investment such as guidance and coaching. While numerous studies investigate the multitude of funding partners, offered funding instruments, and startups' needs, the combination and integration of those perspectives have been under-researched in the entrepreneurial finance literature. To address this issue, we conduct a systematic literature review of 149 articles on startup funding. We find that startups possess different monetary and non-monetary needs depending on their life cycle stage, which influences their search for and selection of appropriate investors. In addition, we find numerous established and newly emerged equity and debt providers and their respective offerings. Based on our review, we propose a framework for allocating suitable investors to a startup's life cycle stage and specific needs. We therefore extend the current dominant startup funding logics to incorporate a complementary view rather than understanding investors as substitutes. Hence, we contribute theoretically to the entrepreneurial finance literature and provide practical guidance for startups and investors.
