Abstract:This paper describes a 10-bit 250-KS/s successive-approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for IoT sensors. In order to reduce the power consumption and the area, the bridge-capacitor array and the top-plate sampling method are used in the digital-to-analog converter (DAC). What's more, the VCM-based switching method is applied while a new energy-efficient comparator is proposed, which relaxes the stringent speed-power trade-off under the 1.2-V supply. The effects of parasitic factors on circuit performance are minimized by the adaptive calibration technique, which introduces a new reference voltage. The flexible reference voltage improves the linearity of the proposed SAR ADC. A prototype implementation in 55nm CMOS exhibits an SNDR of 56.1 dB with the input signal frequency 105 KHz and totally consumes 1.24 uW. The figure of merit (FoM) is 8 fJ/conservation step and the area of the chip is 0.065 mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> .

Abstract:This article presents a 16-bit 2.5-MS/s successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with on-chip foreground calibration, including two digital-to-analog converters (DACs). Apart from the traditional segmented capacitor DAC (CDAC) used in ADC, the assistant DAC (ADAC) is added to store errors, including offset and mismatch, and compensate them based on the calculation. The high-performance comparator and modified timings are used to meet the needs for speed and resolution while paralleling switches are applied to reduce the impacts of charge injection. The proposed SAR ADC has been designed and fabricated in a 55 nm CMOS process with an area of 0.76 mm2. The 81.51 dB signal to noise-plus-distortion ratio (SNDR) and the 96.8 dB spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) are measured at 2.5 MS/s respectively, while the integral nonlinearity (INL) is ＋2.4/−1.7 LSB. The core ADC consumes 25.8 mW power under 3.3 V analog supply and 1.2 V digital supply with the Schreier figure-of-merit (FOMs) 159.8 dB.

Abstract:In this paper, a digital algorithm based on a 15-bit, 5 million samples per second (MSPS), high-speed successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is presented. It features on comparator offset cancellation and capacitor mismatch calibration. The algorithm uses a 13-bit bypass array to measure the errors of both comparator and capacitors. During calibration, errors are read and put into the bypass array to compensate for the mismatches of the main array. Verified by MATLAB, the errors of the SAR ADC output can be corrected into 1 LSB with the help of calibration. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm improves the precision of the SAR ADC significantly.

Abstract:This paper describes an 18-bit 2MSPS successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with double passive noise-shaping calibration. This ADC is intended to have higher accuracy and it only needs minor modifications to conventional architecture, including adding the assistant DACs (ADACs) and integrated capacitors. The ADACs are used to store offset information and mismatch information while integrated capacitors are applied to noise-shaping, combined with the four-port comparator. The proposed SAR ADC with calibration is designed and simulated in a 55-nm CMOS process. The simulated SNDR is improved from 81.24 dB to 111.89 dB.

Abstract:In this paper, an ultra-low power 12-bit 2 kS/s successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is presented. For power optimization, the voltage supply of the digital part is lowered, and the offset voltage of the latch is self-calibrated. Targeted for lower noise, a low kick-back noise latch is proposed. The chip was fabricated using 0.18 μm 1P6M CMOS technology. The ADC achieves SNDR of 61.8 dB and dissipates only 455 nW, resulting in a figure of merit (FOM) of 220 fJ/conversion-step. The ADC core occupies an active area of 674×639 μm2.

Abstract:This paper presents an 8-bit 100KS/s successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital convertor (ADC) in SMIC 0.13 mu m 1P8M process for biomedical applications. This ADC is implemented with sub-circuits consuming no static power, thereby preserving the desired low power characteristic. According to the measured results, the SAR ADC has a signal-to-noise distortion ratio (SNDR) of 49.2 dB, and the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) of 63 dB for a 9.37 kHz full-scale input sinusoidal wave at a 100 kHz sampling rate. The effective number of bit (ENOB) is 7.8 bits. The differential nonlinearity (DNL) is in the range of -0.15/+ 0.15 LSB whereas the integral nonlinearity (INL) is within -0.35/+0.23 LSB. The total power is 3.2uW and the figure of merit (FOM) is 143 fJ/conversion-step.

Abstract:This paper presents a differential 62. 5kS/s, 300nW,8bit successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converters (ADC) in 40nm CMOS technology occupying a silicon area of $0.005\mathrm{m}\mathrm{m}^{2}$. An algorithm that calculates the impact of capacitor mismatch errors and parasitic effects on performance for multi-structure comparison and area optimization has been proposed. The measured FOM of the proposed ADC is 14.9fJ/c-s at 62. 5kS/s with Effective number of bits (ENoB) of 8. 3bits, spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) of 63.34 dB and total harmonic distortion (THD) of 60.9 dB are achieved.

Abstract:This paper presents an ultra-low-voltage 10-bit successive approximation-register analog-to-digital converter (SAR ADC) based on the binary search algorithm for biomedical applications. An energy-efficient DAC switching scheme for a fully differential SAR ADC is proposed, which achieves a 99.8% reduction in DAC switching energy compared to conventional SAR ADC. In this design, by using a dummy capacitor split technique, an attempt has been made to reduce the capacitor of the most significant bit, resulting in a 92.87% reduction in the total number of capacitors compared to conventional design. In the proposed structure, the common-mode voltage of the comparator is approximately constant. The maximum voltage variation in the proposed switching scheme is Vref/2. Additionally, power consumption has been reduced by implementing the power gating technique in the control logic part. The proposed converter with a sampling frequency of 1 kS/s and a supply voltage of 0.2 V has been designed and simulated in TSMC 65nm CMOS technology. Both analytical calculations and simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed switching scheme. Ultimately, the proposed scheme achieves a power consumption of 2.08 nW and a Figure of Merit (FoM) of 5.39 fJ/conversion-step. In comparison with the state-of-the-art, the proposed design has demonstrated excellent performance in achieving optimal power.

Abstract:This paper presents a SAR ADC for biomedical application, which has a strict limit on its power consumption. Thus, two techniques are introduced into its design: a novel ladder-based reconfigurable time domain (RTD) comparator is proposed to reduce the noise and to adjust power according to inputs automatically; and a novel clock distribution circuit is utilized to save more than 55% power consumption. The prototype chip is designed and fabricated in UMC 0.18μm technology. The simulation results show that with supply voltage of 0.9V, the ADC consumes 1.07μW at the sampling rate of 200kS/s. And the SNDR is 71.2 dB with 3.24kHz input sinusoid signal, showing the corresponding figure-of-merit of 1.8 fJ /conversion-step.

Abstract:Modern biomedical application such as implanted systems calls for low power high performance analog-to-digital converters. The successive approximation register (SAR) architecture has been proved to be a best choice for its low power consumption and small die area, which benefits from CMOS technology. This work concentrates on a new capacitor array with a novel switching procedure to further improve power efficiency and area economy. The proposed SAR ADC is designed with a supply voltage of 1.8V and at a sampling rate of 200kS/s, and an SNDR of 67dB and power consumption of 6.2μW is achieved. The chip is implemented in 0.18μm SMIC CMOS technology and calibrated with LMS adaptive algorithm, leading to a 2~5dB increase in SNDR.

Abstract:A 6 bit 700 MS/s single-channel asynchronous Successive Approximation Register (SAR) ADC in a 40 nm low-leakage CMOS technology is presented in this paper. Two alternate comparators and asynchronous processing are adopted to enhance the speed. A low kickback noise comparator with foreground offset calibration is proposed. The multiplexer-based logic is used instead of the gate logic to reduce the asynchronous logic delay. The measurement results show that the designed ADC achieves 33.6 dB peak SNDR with 3.1mW power consumption from a 1.1V supply.

Abstract:This brief presents a 10-bits successive approximation register analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a sampling rate of 1 kS/s for implantable medical devices. This ADC is implemented in a 65-nm CMOS process in which leakage current will be a key design parameter. It imposes the highest degree of simplicity in the design of the ADCs architecture. Thus, the transistor count is minimized, which reduces not only the active power, but also the number of leakage sources. The modified top-plate $V_{\mathrm{ cm}}$ -based switching offers energy efficient switching at the capacitive-DAC (CDAC) and uses simple control logic. In addition, the proposed asymmetrical metal-oxide-metal capacitor reduces the size of the CDAC by 90% for a given gain error. Furthermore, the input referred offset voltage of the dynamic comparator can be improved by the top-plate $V_{\mathrm{ cm}}$ -based switching method at system level without using any additional transistor. The other building blocks are also simplified for lower power consumption. This ADC occupies an area of 0.046 ${\mathrm{ mm}}^{2}$ . At 0.9 V and 1 kS/s, the 10-bits ADC consumes 5.8 nW, in which, 2.34 nW is contributed by leakage power consumption. The ADC achieves 9.1-ENOB and an energy efficiency of 10.94-fJ/conversion step.

Abstract:This paper presents a pipelined successive approximation register analog-to-digital converter (SAR ADC) for bio-medical applications based on 65 nm CMOS technology. Without using op-amp, the proposed 9-bit pipelined SAR ADC can reduce the capacitance from 512C to 64C. The pipelined architecture can enhance the operation efficiency of the ADC and also save the digital power consumption in the SAR. The simulation results show that the total power of the ADC is 10.26 μW only, and the figure of merit (FOM) of the ADC is 28.3 fJ/conversion-step.

Abstract:This paper presents a successive approximation register(SAR) ADC for implantable medical chips and a novel energy efficient switching method for reducing power.Compared with the conventional method,the average switching energy for cap array is reduced by 68% and the area of capacitor array is reduced to just 50%.A dynamic comparator with calibration is adopted to improve accuracies and reduce power consumption.An asynchronous clock is adopted to avoid high frequency clock generator.The 5 Ms-1 11 bit SAR ADC is fabricated in SMIC 0.18 μm CMOS mixed signal process.The low supply voltage is 1 V.The proposed ADC method can achieves a SNDR of 55.1 dB,a SFDR of 68.38 dB and a power consumption of 0.236 mW.The core area is 650 μm×1 000 μm.This ADC core can be used in implantable chips.

Abstract:Across the board, the performance of ADCs has been under increasing scrutiny because of the rapid growth of portable electronic devices and biomedical sensors. As part of the sensor’s long-term work, its power consumption should also be as low as possible. Sensors benefit from SAR ADCs’ small size and low power consumption, making them an ideal fit for ADCs. To overcome the limitations of accuracy and linearity of ADCs caused by manufacturing process deviations, a 12-bit, 1 MS/s low-power SAR ADC based on 180 nm CMOS technology is presented. The front-end analog calibration system ensures the ADC is at its best. The design also includes low fan-in SAR logic to reduce the capacitive load on the comparator and increase the comparison speed. The layout area is 0.3 mm 2 , approximately 30% less than conventional products of the same process.

Abstract:This letter presents a 65-dB SNDR ECG SAR analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that utilizes a VCM-based LSB-first switching scheme for extraordinary low-power operation under low supply voltage. Unlike conventional VCO-based or OSC-based comparators which being either power inefficiency or low speed, the adaptive-latching OSC-based comparator is presented. It achieves low power while simultaneously maintaining an adequate speed under a low supply voltage through the adaptive latching scheme and asynchronous operations. The switching scheme incorporating the proposed comparator also facilitates the DAC mismatch calibration, where no additional analog hardware is necessary for the DAC mismatch detection. After calibration, the worst INL decreases from 2.6 LSBs to 0.85 LSB. The prototype, fabricated in 65-nm LP CMOS, attains 65.48-dB SNDR at 4 KS/s with an OSR = 4 while consuming only 8.1 nW at 0.55-V supply and leading to a 173.4-dB Schreier FoM.

Abstract:This paper presents a 200 kS/s 12-bit successive approximation ADC with a new ladder-based time-domain comparator. The proposed comparator utilizes differential multi-ladder stages, resulting in improvement of gain and noise performance. The chip is designed and fabricated in a standard 0.18 mu m CMOS technology with area of 0.127mm(2). With a supply of 0.9V, the ADC consumes 2.72 mu W at the sampling rate of 200 kS/s. The measured SNDR and SFDR are 61.6 dB and 66.1 dB respectively, providing an ENOB of 9.9 bits, and the corresponding FOM of 28 fJ/conv-step.

Abstract:A relatively low-power 16-bit 1MS/s successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is presented in this paper. Based on the typical structure of SAR ADC, some effective techniques including bootstrapped sampling-switch used to suppress nonlinear distortion, dynamic comparator to reduce power dissipation and the offset-calibration to ensure conversion accuracy have been employed. The off-chip search algorithm is developed against the harmonic distortion resulted from capacitor mismatch. Simulation with parasitism extracted from the layout demonstrates that the ADC achieves signal-to-noise-and-distortion-ratio (SNDR) of 94.3dB at 1MSamples/s, 500KHz input frequency and consumes 44mW from a 1.8V power supply. With the 0.18μm complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process and metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitor, the ADC core including decoupling capacitors occupies an active area of 1.0mm×1.4mm.
