Abstract:This paper describes a 10-bit 250-KS/s successive-approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for IoT sensors. In order to reduce the power consumption and the area, the bridge-capacitor array and the top-plate sampling method are used in the digital-to-analog converter (DAC). What's more, the VCM-based switching method is applied while a new energy-efficient comparator is proposed, which relaxes the stringent speed-power trade-off under the 1.2-V supply. The effects of parasitic factors on circuit performance are minimized by the adaptive calibration technique, which introduces a new reference voltage. The flexible reference voltage improves the linearity of the proposed SAR ADC. A prototype implementation in 55nm CMOS exhibits an SNDR of 56.1 dB with the input signal frequency 105 KHz and totally consumes 1.24 uW. The figure of merit (FoM) is 8 fJ/conservation step and the area of the chip is 0.065 mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> .

Abstract:This article presents a 16-bit 2.5-MS/s successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with on-chip foreground calibration, including two digital-to-analog converters (DACs). Apart from the traditional segmented capacitor DAC (CDAC) used in ADC, the assistant DAC (ADAC) is added to store errors, including offset and mismatch, and compensate them based on the calculation. The high-performance comparator and modified timings are used to meet the needs for speed and resolution while paralleling switches are applied to reduce the impacts of charge injection. The proposed SAR ADC has been designed and fabricated in a 55 nm CMOS process with an area of 0.76 mm2. The 81.51 dB signal to noise-plus-distortion ratio (SNDR) and the 96.8 dB spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) are measured at 2.5 MS/s respectively, while the integral nonlinearity (INL) is ＋2.4/−1.7 LSB. The core ADC consumes 25.8 mW power under 3.3 V analog supply and 1.2 V digital supply with the Schreier figure-of-merit (FOMs) 159.8 dB.

Abstract:This paper describes an 18-bit 2MSPS successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with double passive noise-shaping calibration. This ADC is intended to have higher accuracy and it only needs minor modifications to conventional architecture, including adding the assistant DACs (ADACs) and integrated capacitors. The ADACs are used to store offset information and mismatch information while integrated capacitors are applied to noise-shaping, combined with the four-port comparator. The proposed SAR ADC with calibration is designed and simulated in a 55-nm CMOS process. The simulated SNDR is improved from 81.24 dB to 111.89 dB.

Abstract:A 16-channel 12-bit Successive Approximation Register (SAR) Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) for Analog-front-end (AFE) circuits is presented. The proposed SAR ADC achieves rail-to-rail input range and low power consumption with a small area. A Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) using resistor-capacitor array is applied to avoid a larger capacitor array and increase the resolution. Moreover, special switching control circuits and sample mode are described in terms of the resolution for wide input range. And it avoids additional large capacitors. It's realized in 130 nm GSMC technology. Simulated at 3.3 V supply voltage, 3.3 V voltage reference and 1Msps, the results indicate a noise and distortion ratios (SNDR) of 64.85 dB, typical DNL of +0.2/-0.4 LSB and INL of +0.25/-0.33 LSB. Its ENOB is 10.48 bits. It consumes 1.8 mW and occupies an area of 626 μm × 558 μm.

Abstract:This paper presents a 12 bit 100MS/s asynchronous successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) implemented in 14-nm CMOS FinFet technology. The comparator with feedback is proposed to suppress the noise. In order to adapt to the low supply voltage application, the dynamic logic with NOR-gate is proposed. The ADC is designed in SMIC 14nm technology. It achieves SNDR of 68.96 dB and 68.36 dB at low and Nyquist input frequency, respectively, resulting in figure of merit (FoM) of 5.1 and 6.37 fJ/conversion-step, respectively.

Abstract:This paper presents a low-power 10-bit 130-MS/s successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) in 90 nm CMOS process. The proposed asynchronous ADC consists of a comparator, SAR logic block and two control blocks for the capacitive digital to analog converters (DAC). At a 1.2 V supply and 130 MS/s, the ADC achieves an SNDR of 55.2 dB and consumes 860 uW, resulting in a figure of merit (FOM) of 50.9 fJ/MHz. It achieves an ENOB of 8.8 bits with a differential input range of 1570 mV.

Abstract:A design of low-power 10-bit 1 MS/s asynchronous successive approximation register analog-to-digital converter (SAR ADC) is presented in this paper. To improve the linearity of the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and energy efficiency, a common mode-based monotonic charge recovery (CMMC) switching technique is proposed. The proposed switching technique consumes only 63.75 CVREF2 switching energy, which is far less as compared to the conventional switching technique without dividing or adding additional switches. In addition, bootstrap switching is implemented to ensure enhanced linearity. To reduce the power consumption from the comparator, a dynamic latch comparator with a self-comparator clock generation circuit is implemented. The proposed prototype of the SAR ADC is implemented in a 55 nm CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) process. The proposed architecture achieves a figure of merit (FOM) of 17.4 fJ/conversion, signal-to-noise distortion ratio (SNDR) of 60.39 dB, and an effective number of bits (ENOB) of 9.74 bits with a sampling rate of 1 MS/s at measurement levels. The implemented SAR ADC consumes 14.8 μW power at 1 V power supply.

Abstract:This paper presents a single-ended 8-channel 10-bit 200 kS/s 607 μW synchronous successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) using HLMC 55 nm low leakage (LL) CMOS technology with a 3.3 V/1.2 V supply voltage. In conventional binary-encoded SAR ADCs the total capacitance grows exponentially with resolution. In this paper a CR hybrid DAC is adopted to reduce both capacitance and core area. The capacitor array resolves 4 bits and the other 6 bits are resolved by the resistor array. The 10-bit data is acquired by thermometer encoding to reduce the probability of DNL errors which are typically present in binary weighted architectures. This paper uses an auto-zeroing offset cancellation technique that can reduce the offset to 0.286 mV. The prototype chip realized the 10-bit SAR ADC fabricated in HLMC 55 nm CMOS technology with a core area of 167 × 87 μm2. It shows a sampling rate of 200 kS/s and low power dissipation of 607 μW operates at a 3.3 V analog supply voltage and a 1.2 V digital supply voltage. At the input frequency of 10 kHz the signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR) is 60.1 dB and the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) is 68.1 dB. The measured DNL is +0.37/−0.06 LSB and INL is +0.58/−0.22 LSB.

Abstract:A 6 bit 700 MS/s single-channel asynchronous Successive Approximation Register (SAR) ADC in a 40 nm low-leakage CMOS technology is presented in this paper. Two alternate comparators and asynchronous processing are adopted to enhance the speed. A low kickback noise comparator with foreground offset calibration is proposed. The multiplexer-based logic is used instead of the gate logic to reduce the asynchronous logic delay. The measurement results show that the designed ADC achieves 33.6 dB peak SNDR with 3.1mW power consumption from a 1.1V supply.

Abstract:This paper presents a power-efficient noise reduction technique for successive approximation register analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) based on the statistical estimation theory. It suppresses both comparator noise and quantization error by accurately estimating the ADC conversion residue. It allows a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to be achieved with a noisy low-power comparator and a relatively low resolution digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The proposed technique has low hardware complexity, requiring no change to the standard ADC operation except for repeating the least significant bit (LSB) comparisons. Three estimation schemes are studied and the optimal Bayes estimator is chosen for a prototype 11-b ADC in 65-nm CMOS. The measured SNR is improved by 7 dB with the proposed noise reduction technique. Overall, it achieves 10.5-b effective number of bits while operating at 100 kS/s and consuming 0.6 μW from a 0.7-V power supply.

Abstract:This brief presents a 73-dB-SNDR 2nd-order noise-shaping successive approximation-register (NS-SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a low-noise time-domain comparator. In contrast to most prior works, in which a multi-input voltage-domain comparator was adopted as a signal summation circuit, the proposed NS-SAR employs a time-domain comparator to sum signals, which reduces input-referred noise by increasing the number of voltage-controlled delay stages, exhibiting high noise efficiency. Fabricated in a 65-nm CMOS process, the prototype 6-bit NS-SAR ADC achieves a peak signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) of 73 dB over a bandwidth of 250kHz with an oversampling ratio (OSR) of 20, while consuming only 93.85 úW from a 1 V supply, leading to an SNDR-based Schreier figure of merit (FoM) of 167.3 dB.

Abstract:A relatively low-power 16-bit 1MS/s successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is presented in this paper. Based on the typical structure of SAR ADC, some effective techniques including bootstrapped sampling-switch used to suppress nonlinear distortion, dynamic comparator to reduce power dissipation and the offset-calibration to ensure conversion accuracy have been employed. The off-chip search algorithm is developed against the harmonic distortion resulted from capacitor mismatch. Simulation with parasitism extracted from the layout demonstrates that the ADC achieves signal-to-noise-and-distortion-ratio (SNDR) of 94.3dB at 1MSamples/s, 500KHz input frequency and consumes 44mW from a 1.8V power supply. With the 0.18μm complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process and metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitor, the ADC core including decoupling capacitors occupies an active area of 1.0mm×1.4mm.

Abstract:This paper presents a SAR ADC for biomedical application, which has a strict limit on its power consumption. Thus, two techniques are introduced into its design: a novel ladder-based reconfigurable time domain (RTD) comparator is proposed to reduce the noise and to adjust power according to inputs automatically; and a novel clock distribution circuit is utilized to save more than 55% power consumption. The prototype chip is designed and fabricated in UMC 0.18μm technology. The simulation results show that with supply voltage of 0.9V, the ADC consumes 1.07μW at the sampling rate of 200kS/s. And the SNDR is 71.2 dB with 3.24kHz input sinusoid signal, showing the corresponding figure-of-merit of 1.8 fJ /conversion-step.

Abstract:This paper presents a power efficient 12-bit successive aproximation register analog-to-digital converter (SAR ADC) operated at a supply voltage of 0.6V. A binary-scaled redundant technology for SAR ADC is proposed based on split-capacitor DAC architecture. It suppresses the decision error without sacrificing the resolution. In addition, a feedback controlled bias technique is applied to the comparator reducing the power consumption for comparison by 21.6%. The proposed ADC was fabricated in 0.18μm CMOS technology, occupying an core area of 0.07mm 2 . The measured DNL and INL is +0.46/-0.50 LSB and +0.98/-0.95 LSB, respectively. A SINAD of 68.1dB and SFDR of 83.0dB are achieved, respectively, while operating at a sampling rate of 100kS/s. The power consuming of the proposed ADC is 1.35uW, resulting in an FOM of 6.5fJ/Conversion-step.

Abstract:A 13 bit 100 MS/s successive approximation register analog-to-digital converter (SAR ADC) is presented for high-resolution and high-speed applications. In order to reduce comparator noise and improve the speed of comparator, a three-stage comparator based on the inverter is proposed. To reduce the leakage current of the low-Vt transistor, an improved asynchronous control logic with feedback is proposed. An energy-efficient SAR ADC with high sampling rate can be realized with these techniques combined. The prototype is implemented in SMIC 14-nm CMOS FinFET. Simulation result with noise, parasitic capacitance, and other non-ideal effects shows that ADC achieves a low input frequency SNDR/SFDR of 75.13/89.48dB, while the SNDR/SFDR at Nyquist is 74.57/84.42dB without any calibration. The prototype consumes 2.34mW from 0.8-V supply, leading to a Walden figure-of-merit 5.22fJ/conversion-step at Nyquist.

Abstract:This paper presents a 200 kS/s 12-bit successive approximation ADC with a new ladder-based time-domain comparator. The proposed comparator utilizes differential multi-ladder stages, resulting in improvement of gain and noise performance. The chip is designed and fabricated in a standard 0.18 mu m CMOS technology with area of 0.127mm(2). With a supply of 0.9V, the ADC consumes 2.72 mu W at the sampling rate of 200 kS/s. The measured SNDR and SFDR are 61.6 dB and 66.1 dB respectively, providing an ENOB of 9.9 bits, and the corresponding FOM of 28 fJ/conv-step.

Abstract:A low power 1V 10-bit 100MS/s successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital (ADC) converter is presented. The use of top-plate-sample switching procedure and split capacitive array dramatically reduces total capacitance and saves switching energy. As small total capacitance and split structure together make capacitive array highly sensitive to parasitic capacitance, its layout becomes the key of the ADC. High sampling rate leads to ultra-high logic control clock frequency, so a variable self-timed clock generator is implemented and logical optimization to improve conversion speed is done inside. Special cares are taken to prevent charge leakage caused by 65nm GP process from ruining the dynamic performance. The prototype was fabricated in a 65nm 1P9M GP CMOS technology. Post simulation results show a peak SNDR of 58.364dB and 1.6mW total power consumption with a figure of merit (FOM) of 24fJ/conversion-step.
