Abstract:Porous PVDF blend membranes with good hydrophilicity and a symmetric structure were prepared by the phase inversion method using amphiphilic brush-like copolymers, P(MMA-r-PEGMA), as hydrophilic additive and triethylphosphate (TEP) as solvent. P(MMA-r-PEGMA) was synthesized by radical polymerization in TEP. Then the obtained amphiphilic copolymer solution was mixed with PVDF and TEP to prepare the dope solution. The effects of P(MMA-r-PEGMA) content and coagulation composition on membrane morphologies were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results demonstrated that, even blended with amphiphilic copolymers, a symmetric structure can be formed. Hollow fiber membranes with a mainly symmetric structure were also fabricated. The dry hollow fiber membranes showed good hydrophilicity, high flux and good rejection performance because of their hydrophilic surface and pores wall.

Abstract:Amphiphilic hyperbranched-star polymers (HPE-g-MPEG) with different arm length were synthesized by grafting methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)s (MPEGs, M¯n=350,750and2000, respectively) to the hyperbranched polyester (HPE) molecule using terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) as the coupling agent, and blended with PVDF to fabricate porous membranes via phase inversion process. Membrane morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM), and chemical composition changes of the membrane surfaces were measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Water contact angle, static protein adsorption, and filtration experiments were used to evaluate the hydrophilicity and anti-fouling properties of the membranes. It was found that, with the increase in MPEG arm length, the MPEG segments of HPE-g-MPEG enriched at the membrane surfaces substantially, resulting in a significant decrease in water contact angle. Furthermore, the blend membranes containing longer arm HPE-g-MPEGs showed lower static protein adsorption, higher protein solution fluxes, and better protein solution flux recovery than the pure PVDF membrane.

Abstract:An amphiphilic hyperbranched-star polymer (HPE-g-MPEG) was synthesized by grafting methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) to the end of the hyperbranched polyester (HPE) molecule using terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) as the coupling agent. The synthesized amphiphilic hyperbranched-star polymer was blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to fabricate porous membranes via typical phase inversion process, and then the membranes were filled and swollen by a liquid electrolyte solution to form polymer electrolytes. The influences of HPE-g-MPEG on the morphology, crystallinity, liquid electrolyte uptake, mechanical properties of the porous membranes and the electrochemical properties of the activated membranes were investigated. It was found that the addition of HPE-g-MPEG resulted in a significant increase in porosity and a considerable reduction in crystallinity of the blend membranes, which favored the liquid electrolyte uptake and, consequently, led to a remarkable increase in ion conductivity at ambient temperature. The maximum ion conductivity observed in this study was 1.76×10−3S/cm at 20°C for the blend membrane with a HPE-g-MPEG/PVDF ratio of 3/10 (w/w).

Abstract:Porous membranes were prepared via phase inversion process from casting solution composed of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), and hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG). The membranes were characterized in terms of surface and bulk chemical compositions, morphology, water contact angle, porosity, and water flux. The effects of HPG content on membrane structures and properties were investigated. The effect of HPG addition on the hydrophilicity was discussed as well when the compositions of coagulation bath were changed. To better understand the special effects of HPG on the structures and properties of the membranes, PVDF membranes prepared using HPG as the additive were compared with those prepared using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the additive.

Abstract:To endow hydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes with reliable hydrophilicity and protein resistance, an amphiphilic hyperbranched-star polymer (HPE-g-MPEG) with about 12 hydrophilic arms in each molecule was synthesized by grafting methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG) to the hyperbranched polyester (HPE) molecule using terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) as the coupling agent and blended with PVDF to fabricate porous membranes via phase inversion process. The chemical composition changes of the membrane surface were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the membrane morphologies were measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Water contact angle, static protein adsorption, and filtration experiments were used to evaluate the hydrophilicity and anti-fouling properties of the membranes. It was found that MPEG segments of HPE-g-MPEG enriched at the membrane surface substantially, while the water contact angle decreased as low as 49 degrees for the membrane with a HPE-g-MPEG/PVDF ratio of 3/10. More importantly, the water contact angle of the blend membrane changed little after being leached continuously in water at 60 degrees C for 30 days, indicating a quite stable presence of HPE-g-MPEG in the blend membranes. Furthermore, the blend membranes showed lower static protein adsorption, higher water and protein solution fluxes, and better water flux recovery after cleaning than the pure PVDF membrane.

Abstract:Porous membranes were prepared via phase inversion process from casting solutions composed of poly(vinylidene fluoride), hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG), and N,N-dimethylacetamide. To seek a stable presence of HPG in the resulting membranes, it was crosslinked in the casting solutions using 4,4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride as the crosslinking agent. The membranes were characterized in terms of morphology, surface and bulk chemical compositions, water contact angle, porosity, water flux, and bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption experiments. The effects of HPG content and crosslinking degree on the membrane structure and properties were investigated. The increasing of crosslinking degree resulted in a significant improvement in HPG stability in the membrane matrix, and a remarkable enrichment of the crosslinked HPG at the separation surface was observed when the membrane was shaken in water at a relatively high temperature (60 degrees C). This enrichment led to a decrease in the value of water contact angle and an improvement in fouling-resistance. To optimize the membrane performance, a small amount of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used as an additive, and it was found that the addition of PVP led to a considerable increase in water flux. Preparation of High Density Polyethylene/polyethylene- Block -Poly(ethylene Glycol) Copolymer Blend Porous Membranes Via Thermally Induced Phase Separation Process and Their Properties

Abstract:High density polyethylene (HDPE)/polyethylene-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PE-b-PEG) blend porous membranes were prepared via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) process using diphenyl ether (DPE) as diluent. The phase diagrams of HDPE/PE-b-PEG/DPE systems were determined by optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). By varying the content of PE-b-PEG, the effects of PE-b-PEG copolymer on morphology and crystalline structure of membranes were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The chemical compositions of whole membranes and surface layers were characterized by elementary analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Water contact angle, static protein adsorption and water flux experiments were used to evaluate the hydrophilicity, antifouling and water permeation properties of the membranes. It was found that the addition of PE-b-PEG increased the pore size of the obtained blend membranes. In the investigated range of PE-b-PEG content, the PEG blocks could not aggregate into obviously separated domains in membrane matrix. More importantly, PE-b-PEG could not only be retained stably in the membrane matrix during membrane formation, but also enrich at the membrane surface layer. Such stability and surface enrichment of PE-b-PEG endowed the blend membranes with improved hydrophilicity, protein absorption resistance and water permeation properties, which would be substantially beneficial to HDPE membranes for water treatment application.
Synthesis, characterization and lubricating effect of long chain branched polydimethylsiloxane-g-polyethylene copolymers

Abstract:Long chain branched polydimethylsiloxane-g-polyethylene (PDMS-g-PE) copolymers were synthesized by hydrosilylation reaction between polymethylhydrosiloxane and vinyl terminated PE macromonomer. The structure and properties were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR), high temperature gel permeation chromatography (HT-GPC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The effect of the hydrogen content of polymethylhydrosiloxane on the copolymer structure and properties was investigated. It was found that the molecular weight of PDMS-g-PE increased with the hydrogen content of polymethylhydrosiloxane since more PE macromonomers were grafted onto the polydimethylsiloxane main chains. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of PDMS-g-PE was extremely low, indicating the excellent molecular chain flexibility. PDMS-g-PE with more PE branched chains showed higher melting temperature (Tm) and higher melting enthalpy (ΔHm). PDMS-g-PE was used as flow modifier for HDPE. When 2% PDMS-g-PE was added to HDPE, the melting flow rate (MFR) increased by 21%, the elongation at break improved significantly and the impact strength improved a little, while the tensile strength and elastic modulus decreased slightly.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were hydrophilic modified with hydroxyl group terminated hyperbranched poly(amine-ester) (HPAE). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to study the chemical change of PVDF membranes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that some HPAE molecules were retained in PVDF membrane through polymer chain coiling. The presence of HPAE would improve the hydrophilicity of PVDF membrane. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to characterize the morphology of different membranes. The thermodynamic stability for PVDF/DMAc/HPAE/Water system was characterized by the determination of the gelation values. Precipitation kinetics for PVDF/DMAc/HPAE/Water system was studied by precipitation time measurement. The water contact angle indicated that the hydrophilicity and the biocompatibility corresponding to protein adsorption of PVDF membrane were improved significantly after blending with hydrophilic HPAE molecules. Abstract:Three kinds of amphiphilic polymers, including the tri-block copolymer of (polyethylene oxide)–(polypropylene oxide)–(polyethylene oxide) (I, EPTBP), the comb-like copolymer of polysiloxane with polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide side chains (II, ACPS) and the hyperbranched star copolymer of polyester-g-methoxyl polyethylene glycol (III, HPE-g-MPEG), were blended with PVDF to fabricate porous membranes via a phase inversion process, respectively, and the effects of the different structures of the amphiphilic polymers on the properties of the blend membranes were compared. The membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, mercury porosimetry, water contact angle measurements, etc. The anti-fouling properties of the prepared membranes were evaluated by static and dynamic bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorptions. Specially, the stabilities of these amphiphilic polymers in the final membranes were estimated by continuous leaching tests. At the same time, the properties of the membranes using the amphiphilic polymers as modifiers were compared with those of the membrane using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as modifier.
Structure formation and characterization of PVDF hollow fiber membranes by melt-spinning and stretching method

Abstract:Melt-spinning and stretching (MS-S) method was proposed for preparing poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fiber membranes with excellent mechanical properties. The morphology and properties of PVDF fibers and membranes were investigated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), field emission scanning electron microscope, mercury porosimeter, and tensile experiment. SAXS results indicated that the stacked lamellar structure aligned normal to the fiber axis was separated and deformed when the fibers were strained, and the long period of the strained fibers increased accordingly. Factors affecting the membrane properties were mainly spin-draw ratio, annealing temperature, time, and stretching rate. Experimental results showed that the average pore size, porosity, and N-2 permeation of the membranes all increased with the increasing spin-draw ratios and annealing temperatures. Annealing the nascent PVDF hollow fibers at 145 degrees C for 12 h was suitable for attaining membranes with good performance. In addition, the amount and size of the micropores of the membrane increased obviously with stretching rate. Tensile experinlEnt indicated PVDF hollow fiber membranes made by MS-S process had excellent mechanical properties. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Macroporous materials polymerized from high internal phase emulsions (PolyHIPEs) possess well-defined interconnected porous structures and tunable device shapes. This provides interesting property characteristics well-suited for a variety of applications. However, such materials also demonstrate poor mechanical performances, which limit their potential use. As will be demonstrated, this results from the high surfactant content required by PolyHIPEs. Herein, a new approach is introduced for designing a highly efficient polymeric surfactant, which generates interconnected pores in PolyHIPEs through designing an incompatible surfactant and skeleton material. The surfactant also possesses a hyperbranched topology, which combines the strong amphipathy of small molecular surfactants and the nanosphere structure of Pickering emulsifiers to provide an excellent colloidal stability to HIPEs. A hyperbranched polyethylene having pendant sodium sulfonate groups (HBPE-SO3Na) was thus designed and synthesized via chain walking copolymerization of ethylene and 2-trimethylsilyloxyethyl acrylate followed by sulfonation. Stable HIPEs of styrene/divinylbenzene and water at a weight ratio of 1 to 5 were obtained with using HBPE-SO3Na. The polymerization of HIPEs produced interconnected macroporous polystyrenes (PSs) at a substantially lower surfactant content, for example, 0.5 wt % HBPE-SO3Na. The compressive Young's moduli of PolyHIPEs reached 104-111 MPa with 0.5-2 wt % HBPE-SO3Na, which is the first reported case of a PS-based PolyHIPE achieving its theoretical modulus. The PolyHIPE was used to support Au nanoparticles and embed in a column for oxidation of dimethylphenylsilane. A complete conversion of dimethylphenylsilanol was achieved with low column back pressure in a 50 h continuous reaction with no degradation of PolyHIPE integrity and mechanical property.
An Extending of Candidate for the Hydrophilic Modification of Polysulfone Membranes from the Compatibility Consideration: the Polyethersulfone-Based Amphiphilic Copolymer As an Example

Abstract:Polyethersulfone (PES) based amphiphilic block copolymer was designed as a hydrophilic additive for the modification of polysulfone (PSf) membranes. The block copolymer with PES as the middle block and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (POEM) as side blocks was synthesized via the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, using a PES-based macro-chain-transfer-agent (macro-CTA). The successful synthesis of the amphiphilic copolymer was confirmed by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Blend membranes were prepared via the non-solvent induced separation method. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) spectra of blend membranes displayed single glass transition temperatures (Tg), indicating the miscibility between the PSf and PES main chains. The melting peak at 37.4°C presented the phase separation of POEM from hydrophobic domains in membranes. The great improvements in hydrophilicity, fouling-resistance, and water flux were found when the modifier was introduced. At last, the intact of RAFT agents from the additives were made use of to graft zwitterionic brushes on membrane surface.
Preparation and Performance of Polyethersulfone Hollow-Fiber Membrane

Abstract:The sheet polyethersulfone(PES) hollow fiber membranes were prepared.The morphology and performance of the membranes can be controlled.By studying the influence of the compositions and conditions on the morphology and performance of PES hollow fiber membrane,the relationship of morphology and performance of the membrane is acquired.Immerse phase inversion was used for membranes preparation.The performance of the membrane was controlled by changing the mass ratio of PES,air setting time,and so on.It was found that the membrane morphologies were changed by the temperature of coagulation bath obviously.Pure water flux and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) were used to characterize the morphology and performance of the membranes.From the study,the parameters for membrane preparation with good performance and ideal structure were summarized.

Abstract:Sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) is a well-known zwitterionic molecule that can improve the hydrophilic property of hydrophobic membranes such as polysulfone (PSU). However, SBMA is too hydrophilic to dissolve in organic solvents. Hence, it is difficult to modify the polymer membranes via blending with their casting solution. This paper aims to synthesize an amphiphilic block polymers of polystyrene-block-sulfobetaine methacrylate (PS-b-SBMA) which can be well dissolved in organic solvents for membrane casting. The two PS-b-SBMA copolymers with SBMA content >28% were applied as the additives to cast the PSU ultrafiltration membrane. The PS-b-SBMA copolymer modified membranes showed lower contact angles and 3-folds higher water flux recovery after BSA treatment than the parent PSU membrane. Moreover, SEM images showed that the BSA contaminant on the modified membrane surfaces was much less than that on PSU membrane. Thus, such modified membranes can be applied to prevent protein fouling in the process of ultrafiltration.

Abstract:To elucidate the effect of fiber structure on the properties of the electrospun gelatin/PCL hybrid membranes, three types of fibers with different structures, i.e., core-shell, blend, and mixed fibers were fabricated. The crystallinity, wettability, swelling degree, and mechanical properties of the hybrid membranes were compared. It was found that the crystalline characteristics of PCL in the core-shell fibers were different from the fibers fabricated by the other two methods. That is, the orientation degree of the PCL chains in the core-shell fibers was higher than that in both blend and mixed fibers. The wettability of the hybrid membrane was dependent on both the composition and structure of the electrospun fibers. Blended fibers exhibited the highest hydrophobicity because of the enrichment of PCL at the fiber surface. Contrarily, the mixed fibers possessed the highest mechanical strength of 35.18 MPa. Abstract:Polysulfone-based amphiphilic polymer polysulfone-graft-poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PSf-g-POEM) was synthesized and used to blend with polyethersulfone (PES) to tune the hydrophobicity and fouling-liable properties of PES membranes. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were conducted to characterize the properties of blend membranes. DSC results showed that the blend samples were characterized with single T-g transition, indicating that the additives were compatible well with PES in membranes. Membranes hydrophilicity was evaluated by contact angle measurement and obviously enhanced wettability of blend membranes was found. XPS analysis suggested that poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (POEM) brushes from amphiphilic additives occupied half part of the membrane surface composition, and the high content of POEM in surface had effectively improved the membranes hydrophilicity as well as the fouling-resistance to proteins. Meanwhile, the formation of cake layer was explored as a main reason for membrane fouling behavior, while the irreversible filtration resistance (R-tr) could be greatly reduced by incorporation of the synthesized amphiphilic additives. Abstract:Polyethersulfone (PES) has widespread applications due to its excellent processability, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance. Nevertheless, its hydrophobic nature often leads to severe fouling and permeance decline. To improve the hydrophilicity of PES membranes, polymer blending is one of the most common methods. In this work, a series of sulfonated polyphenylene sulfones (sPPSU) with 1.9, 4.5, 8.2, 12.7, 19 degrees of sulfonation (DS) were synthesized and used to blend with PES. The PES/sPPSU blends were found to be compatible by calculating their theoretical enthalpy of mixing and measuring their glass transition temperatures (Tg ́s) at a blend weight ratio of 1:1. Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were cast using the nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method. It was found that 50/50 PES/sPPSU blend membranes with a DS equaling to or exceeding 8.2 eliminated finger-like macrovoids, resulting in a thinner and tight cross-sectional structure. A higher DS of sPPSU rendered the blend membranes with more hydrophilicity and oleophobicity as well as a more negatively charged surface. The unmodified PES membrane had rejections of 87.47% and 91.5% in ultrafiltration tests using feed solutions containing BSA and oil/water emulsion, respectively. The rejections could be further increased to 99.37% and 97.17% respectively by the blend membranes. The blend membranes consisting of a higher DS of sPPSU also exhibited a higher permeance, lower BSA absorption and better anti-fouling properties than the PES membrane.

Abstract:The porous support layer with sponge-like structure has been widely used in thin-film composite (TFC) membranes. A series of polysulfone (PSf) support membranes with different sponge-like structure were fabricated via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The influences of membrane fabrication parameters including coagulation bath temperature, relative humidity, pre-evaporation time and membrane thickness on PSf membrane properties were systematically explored. The sponge-like-structured PSf membranes were formed while the coagulation bath temperature, relative humidity, pre-evaporation time and membrane thickness were 60 °C, 20%, 30 s, and 60 μm, respectively. Additionally, three types of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) non-woven fabrics (NWFs) with different properties were selected to study the influencing mechanism on PSf membrane with sponge-like structure. It was found that the PSf membrane (PSf-NWF-01) formed on more hydrophilic PET NWFs exhibited higher porosity (63%) and excellent performances (with a pure water flux of 463.69 L/(m2·h) and the BSA rejection of 97.58%), which was caused by a higher adhesion existed between more hydrophilic NWF surface and PSf casting solution. Moreover, the PSf-NWF-01 membrane also exhibited the highest flux recovery ratio of 88.59% and the lowest irreversible fouling of 11.41%. This work academically clarified the influence mechanism of PET NWFs properties on spongy-like PSf membranes, which also had theoretical guidance for selecting appropriate PET NWFs for the preparation of PSf membranes in industry.

Abstract:Amphiphilic graft copolymers having ultrahigh molecular weight poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) (SMA) backbones and methoxyl poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG) grafts were synthesized via the esterification between anhydride groups with hydroxyl groups. The synthesized graft copolymers, SMA-g-MPEGs, were used as additives in the preparation of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes via phase inversion process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed the comb-like graft copolymers spontaneously segregated to membrane surface during membrane formation. Water contact angle measurements and water absorbance experiments indicated the PES/SMA-g-MPEG blend membranes were much more hydrophilic than pure PES membrane. The blend membranes had stronger protein adsorption resistance than pure PES membrane did. After washed using de-ionized water for 25 days, the blend membranes exhibited higher hydrophilicity and stronger protein adsorption resistance. This phenomenon was attributed to the further accumulation of SMA-g-MPEG additives on membrane surface in aqueous conditions. SMA-g-MPEGs can be well preserved in membrane near-surface and not lost during membrane washing due to their high molecular weight and comb-like architecture.
