Abstract:Background: Sentence production impairment in aphasia has been attributed to several possible sources that are not mutually exclusive. Linguistic accounts often attribute the difficulty to the complexity of a verb's syntactic and/or semantic argument structure. Cognitive processing accounts emphasise the reduced processing capacity observed in agrammatic aphasia, which in turn has been attributed to reduced semantic short-term memory (STM) or slowed processing. Aims: In this study we used verb particles and prepositions to investigate effects of differences in syntactic and semantic argument structure on sentence repetition in aphasia. We predicted that verb particles and sentences containing verb-particle constructions would be easier to repeat than prepositions and prepositional transitive sentences, as the former have a less-complex semantic and syntactic argument structure than the latter. Also, semantic and phonological spans were assessed to determine if a reduction in either capacity correlates with repetition ability. Methods & Procedures: Participants were eight individuals with chronic aphasia. The experimental task was repetition of transitive sentences balanced for length and lexical content containing either verb particles or prepositional object structures. Accuracy of sentence repetition and repetition of verb particles and prepositions within sentences was examined. We calculated the effect of structural complexity on the sentence repetition task as the difference between proportion correct of verb-particle constructions and prepositional transitives. Semantic and phonological STM spans and word spans were also assessed and correlated with this measure of the structural complexity effect on sentence repetition. Outcomes & Results: Verb-particle sentences were repeated correctly significantly more often than prepositional transitive sentences, and within those sentences verbal particles were repeated correctly significantly more often than prepositions. The effect was strongly associated with fluency scores: it was present in participants with low fluency scores, but not in those with high fluency scores. The phonological, but not the semantic, STM probe span measure correlated with both the difference in accurate repetition of verb-particle and prepositional transitive sentences and the particles and prepositions within those sentences. Conclusions: Results indicate that differences in argument structure of particle and preposition constructions influence sentence repetition in agrammatic aphasia. The finding that lower fluency scores are associated with poorer performance on more complex structures suggests that this effect is associated with agrammatism. The impact of these structural distinctions between particles and prepositions should be taken into account during development of treatment stimuli for those with agrammatism.
A novel automatic liver segmentation technique for MR images

Abstract:This paper presents an automatic liver segmentation algorithm based on fast marching and improved fuzzy cluster methods, which can segment liver from abdominal MR images accurately. The developed method is composed of three major steps: first, fast marching method and convex hull algorithm are applied to roughly extract the liver's boundary and topology, which provides a basic estimation for the subsequent calculations; second, an improved fuzzy cluster method, combining with a multiple cycles processing, is designed to refine the segmentation result; third, based on the segmented results, the liver is visualized by Marching Cube method. There are two major difficulties in MRIs liver segmentation: one is that the boundaries between liver and adjacent tissues generally have uniform intensity distributions, which often leads to over segmentation of the liver; the other is that inner vascular inside the liver commonly leads to segmentation leakage. In order to solve these two problems, a prior knowledge based fuzzy cluster method is proposed. Experiments show that the developed method is effective and robust for liver segmentation of MR images.
Environmental noise is positively associated with socioeconomically less privileged neighborhoods in the Netherlands

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Environmental noise has detrimental effects on various health outcomes. Although disparities in some environmental exposures (e.g., air pollution) are well-documented, there is still a limited and uncertain understanding of the extent to which specific populations are disproportionately burdened by noise.AIM: To assess whether environmental noise levels are associated with demographic and socioeconomic neighborhood compositions.METHODS: We cross-sectionally examined long-term noise levels for 9,372 neighborhoods in the Netherlands. We linked these noise levels with administrative data on neighborhood characteristics for the year 2021. Linear and non-linear spatial regression models were fitted to explore the associations between noise, demographic, and socioeconomic neighborhood characteristics.RESULTS: Our results showed that 46 % of the neighborhoods exhibited noise levels surpassing the recommended threshold of 53 dB to prevent adverse health effects. The regressions uncovered positive and partially non-linear neighborhood-level associations between noise and non-Western migrants, employment rates, low-incomers, and address density. Conversely, we found negative associations with higher-educated neighborhoods and those with a greater proportion of younger residents. Neighborhoods with older populations displayed a U-shaped association.CONCLUSIONS: This national study showed an inequality in the noise burden, adversely affecting vulnerable, marginalized, and less privileged neighborhoods. Addressing the uneven distribution of noise and its root causes is an urgent policy imperative for sustainable Dutch cities.

Abstract:It has been shown that there is a correlation between the fusogenecity of synthetic peptides corresponding to the N-terminal segment of wild-type and mutant forms of simian immunodeficiency virus gp32 (SIV) and their mode of insertion into lipid bilayers. Fusogenic activity is only observed when the peptide inserts into the bilayer with an oblique orientation. Since bilayer destabilization is a necessary step in membrane fusion, we investigate how fusion peptides, which insert at different orientations into lipid bilayers, structurally affect model membranes. We use X-ray diffraction to investigate the structural effects of two synthetic peptides on three different lipid systems. One peptide corresponds to the wild-type sequence (SIVwt), which inserts into the membrane at an oblique angle and is fusogenic. The other peptide has a rearranged sequence (SIVmutV), inserts into the membrane along the bilayer normal, and is nonfusogenic. Our results are expressed through different structural effects, which depend on the lipid system: for example, (i) disordering of the L alpha phase as evidenced by the broadening of the diffraction peaks, (ii) morphological convertion of multilamellar vesicles into unilamellar vesicles, (iii) decrease of the hexagonal phase cell parameter when SIVwt is added, and (iv) change in the conditions for the formation of cubic phases as well as its kinetic stability over a range of temperatures. Some of these observations are explicable based on the fact that the SIVwt destabilizes bilayers by inducing a negative monolayer curvature, while the SIVmutV destabilizes bilayers by inducing a positive monolayer curvature. Finally, we present a model which describes how these findings correlate with fusogenic activity and fusion inhibitory activity, respectively.
Noise annoyance and cardiovascular disease risk: results from a 10-year follow-up study

Abstract:The relationship between noise annoyance and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) still needs to be fully elucidated. Thus, we examined the relationship between noise annoyance and CVD risk in a large population-based cohort study. Cross-sectional (N = 15,010, aged 35–74 years, baseline investigation period 2007–2012) and prospective data (5- and 10-year follow-up from 2012 to 2022) from the Gutenberg Health Study were used to examine the relationship between noise annoyance due to different sources and risk of prevalent and incident CVD comprising atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, stroke, chronic heart failure, peripheral artery disease, and venous thromboembolism. In cross-sectional analyses, noise annoyance was an independent risk factor for prevalent CVD, with the strongest associations seen for noise annoyance during sleep (e.g., neighborhood noise annoyance: odds ratio 1.20, 95% confidence interval 1.13–1.27, p < 0.0001). While in the 10-year follow-up, mostly positive associations (although not significant) between noise annoyance and incident CVD were observed, no indication of increased CVD risk was observed after 5 years of follow-up. Noise annoyance due to different sources was associated with prevalent CVD, whereas only weak associations with incident CVD were found. Further large-scale studies are needed to establish the relationship between noise annoyance and risk of CVD.

Abstract:Exposure and damage caused by noise have been reported in many countries around the world. However, few nationwide studies explored the association of residential environmental noise with depressive symptoms, this study aims to examine this association. The Korean Community Health Survey at the individual-level and the Korean Environmental Noise Measurement Database at the regional-level were used. A total of 30,630 individuals were eligible for the analysis. Multilevel model framework was applied to account for the clustered structure of the regional-level data in which individual-level data containing demographic characteristics and health information were nested. As a result of the analysis, Individuals living in the highest environmental noise area had a 1.55 times higher likelihood of experiencing depressive symptoms than those living in the lowest environmental noise area (95% CI, 1.04–2.31). After stratified analysis according to depressive symptom severity, individuals residing in areas with the highest environmental noise exposure had significantly higher odds of mild (aOR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.02–2.07) and moderate symptoms (aOR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.00–2.91). In conclusion, the higher the residential environmental noise, the higher the possibility of mild-to-moderate depressive symptoms. Our findings suggest the need for continued attention to and management of noise pollution, which has the potential to adversely affect individual's mental health.

Abstract:In order to evaluate the adverse effects of combined traffic noise, a face-to-face survey was carried out among 1433 local residents aging from 15 to 75 years. The relationships between the percentage of highly annoyed (%HA), sleep disturbance and acoustical/non-acoustical factors (Ldn, age, gender, residence time, time at home, etc.) were analyzed, respectively. Results showed that %HA caused by road–rail combined traffic noise (%HAroad–rail) was between %HA caused by road dominant noise (%HAroad) and %HA caused by viaduct rail transit dominant noise (%HArail) at same Ldn, which could be explained by partial masking effect. When Ldn > 63 dB, %HArail was higher than %HAroad, which may be related to that the visibility of noise source (trains) and the vibration generated during pass-by of trains could indirectly cause an increment of noise annoyance. When Ldn < 63 dB, %HArail was lower than %HAroad. This may be explained by that the noise disturbance caused by maximal A-weighted sound pressure level of railway noise events in the area dominated by road traffic noise had more influence on annoyance than that in the area dominated by viaduct rail transit noise. Meanwhile, %HA showed a rising trend with the increase in the proportion of nighttime in total time at home, which may be related to that people had a less tolerance to noise at night. The sleep disturbance reached the maximum in the age-group of 30–40 years, which was correlated with that middle-aged people had higher stress and higher noise sensitivity.

Abstract:Building Acoustics, Ahead of Print. Outdoor environmental noise is a major source of annoyance in urban areas and exposure to it can increase the risk of severe health issues. Consequently, it has been the focus of research for decades. Even though people spend the majority of their time indoors, most studies use outdoor noise levels and do not include indoor noise measurements to estimate real exposure levels. This study conducted simultaneous indoor and outdoor noise measurements for 24 h in four multi-unit residential buildings to identify the levels and sources of outdoor noise heard indoors and quantify the effects of outdoor noise on indoor levels. The measurements were conducted in unoccupied suites that are most exposed to traffic and other outdoor noise sources. Surveys were administered following building occupancy to collect information regarding perceived acoustic comfort levels due to outdoor noise. The indoor LAeq,24h in three of the study buildings were above 40 dB(A) and exceeded WHO's noise level limits. Regression analysis showed that outdoor noise only explains 14%–58% of the variability in indoor noise levels. This is mainly because of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system noise which resulted in consistently high indoor noise levels despite variations in outdoor noise. Analysis of the survey showed a poor correlation between reported annoyance and measured noise levels. But annoyance strongly depended on other factors such as suite location and noise sensitivity. The findings show that outdoor noise measurements alone may not be good predictors of exposure levels and the effects of outdoor noise on occupants.
Instruction scheduling using bitvectors for VLIW architecture

Abstract:We extend a framework for retragetable code generation with the following additions. Firstly, the front-end for the framework which involves writing appropriate specification for parsing Lcode generated by the IMPACT front-end[1] has been extended to accept the latest version of Lcode, and validated on some large benchmarks. Secondly,we have implemented the wavefront scheduling technique [2] which uses bitvectors for path based data dependency representation proposed recently for scheduling for VLIW architectures. We have integrated the wavefront scheduler with the Lcode translator and code generator generator tool (CGG) [3]. The Lcode translator generates expression Directed Acyclic Graphs(DAGs), and the code generator which is output by CGG from the machine specifications in terms of a regular tree grammar, generates the data dependency DAGs from a traversal of the expression DAGs for each of the basic blocks. The wavefront scheduler schedules these data dependency DAGs. Current work described below will target the TMS320C62xx VLIW architecture [4].
Sleep disturbance, psycho-social and medical symptoms—A pilot survey among persons exposed to high levels of road traffic noise

Abstract:A pilot survey was undertaken to elucidate sleep quality, as well as psycho-social and medical symptoms and mood, among people who had lived for many years in an area with high levels of road traffic noise during night hours and inhabitants of a quiet control area: 106 personal interviews were performed and specific questionnaires on sleep and mood answered by 63 persons during three consecutive days. It was found that both sleep quality and mood (social orientation, activity, wellbeing and extroversion) were depressed in the noisy area as compared with a control area. Symptoms of tiredness, headache and nervous stomach disorders were more frequent. A significant relationship between sensitivity to noise and sleep quality was also found. From this pilot study hypotheses may be formulated about a relationship between environmental noise and different psycho-social and medical symptoms. It is suggested that similar studies on a larger scale are performed to elucidate long-term effects of noise.

Abstract:Advanced technologies and regulatory regimes have contributed to the availability of veterinary vaccines that have high quality and favourable safety profiles in terms of potential risks posed to the target animals, the persons who come into contact with the vaccine, the consumers of food derived from vaccinated animals and the environment. The authorisation process requires that a range of safety studies are provided to evaluate the products. The design and production of vaccines, and their safe use, are primarily assessed by using data gathered from extensive pre-marketing studies performed on target animals and specific quality tests. The current post-marketing safeguards include good manufacturing practices, batch safety testing, inspections and pharmacovigilance. In addition to hazard identification, a full benefit/risk evaluation needs to be undertaken. The outcome of that evaluation will determine options for risk management and affect regulatory decisions on the safety of the vaccine; options might, for example, include special warnings on package inserts and labels.
Longitudinal associations of neighbourhood environmental exposures with mental health problems during adolescence: Findings from the TRAILS study

Abstract:Background Cross-sectional studies have found associations between neighbourhood environments and adolescent mental health, but the few longitudinal studies mainly focused on single exposure-based analyses and rarely assessed the mental health associations with environmental changes. Objective We assessed longitudinal within- and between-person associations of multiple neighbourhood time-varying physical and social environmental exposures with externalising and internalising problems throughout adolescence. Methods We used four waves of TRAILS (Tracking-Adolescents'-Individual-Lives-Survey) data on self-reported externalising and internalising problems at ages 11, 13, 16, and 19 among 2,135 adolescents in the Netherlands. We measured residence-based time-varying environmental exposures, including green space, air pollution (fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 )), noise, deprivation, and social fragmentation. We fitted random-effect within-between regression models to assess the environment-mental health associations. Results At the within-person level, an interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM 2.5 was associated with a 0.056 IQR (95%CI: 0.014, 0.099) increase in externalising problems, while an IQR social fragmentation increase was associated with a 0.010 IQR (95%CI: -0.020, -0.001) decrease in externalising problems. Stratification revealed that the association with PM 2.5 was significant only for movers, whereas the association with social fragmentation remained only for non-movers. At the between-person level, an IQR higher noise was associated with a 0.100 IQR (95%CI: 0.031, 0.169) more externalising problems, while higher deprivation ( β =0.080 (95%CI: 0.022, 0.138)) and lower fragmentation ( β =-0.073 (95%CI: -0.128, -0.018)) were associated with more internalising problems. We observed positive between-person associations between PM 2.5 , noise, and internalising problems, but both associations were less stable due to the high PM 2.5 -noise correlation. Further, we observed a non-linear between-person PM 2.5 -externalising problems association turning positive when PM 2.5 >15 μg/m 3 . Null associations were found for green space. Conclusion Our findings suggested that air pollution, noise, and neighbourhood deprivation are risk factors for adolescent mental health. Not only exposure levels but also exposure changes matter for adolescent mental health.

The Relationship between Noise Pollution and Depression and Implications for Healthy Ageing: A Spatial Analysis Using Routinely Collected Primary Care Data

Abstract:Environmental noise is a significant public health concern, ranking among the top environmental risks to citizens' health and quality of life. Despite various studies exploring the effects of atmospheric pollution on mental health, spatial investigations into the effects of noise pollution have been notably absent. This study addresses this gap by investigating the association between noise pollution (from road and rail networks) and depression for the first time in England, and first explores localised patterns based on area deprivation. Depression prevalence, defined as the percentage of patients with a recorded depression diagnosis, was calculated in small areas within Cheshire and Merseyside ICS using the Quality and Outcomes Framework Indicators dataset for 2019. Strategic noise mapping for rail and road noise (LDEN) was employed to quantify noise pollution, indicating a 24-hour annual average noise level with distinct weightings for evening and night periods. The English Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) was utilised to represent neighbourhood deprivation. Geographical Weighted Regression and Generalised Structural Equation Spatial Modelling (GSESM) were applied to estimate relationships between transportation noise, depression prevalence, and IMD at the Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) level. While transportation noise showed a low direct effect on depression levels in Cheshire and Merseyside ICS, it significantly mediated other factors linked to depression prevalence. Notably, GSESM revealed that health deprivation and disability was strongly associated (0.62) with depression through the indirect effect of environmental noise, particularly where transportation noise exceeds 55 dB on a 24-hour basis. Comprehending variations in noise exposure across different areas is paramount. This research not only provides valuable insights for informed decision-making but also lays the groundwork for implementing noise mitigation measures. These measures are aimed at addressing mental health inequalities, enhancing the quality of life for the exposed population and supporting a healthier ageing process in urban environments. The findings also carry crucial implications for public health, specifically in tailoring targeted interventions to mitigate noise-related health risks in areas where noise burdens exceed 55 dB, and residents may experience health deprivation and disability.

The mediating role of sleep in the association between environmental noise and mental health

Abstract:Exposure to environmental noise in residential areas has been associated with adverse mental health outcomes; however, the mechanisms of this relationship remain underexplored. This study investigates the contribution of reduced sleep quality to the negative association between perceived neighbourhood environmental noise exposure and poor mental health. We used the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey and applied causal mediation methods to examine the role of sleep in the association between self-reported exposure to road traffic noise and plane, train and industry (PTI) noise and mental wellbeing at three time points between 2012 and 2021. Road traffic noise was associated with poorer mental health in 2012-13 and 2016-17, while no evidence of an association was observed in 2020-2021 (the period of COVID-related lockdowns in Australia). For the years where a significant association was observed, mediation analyses suggest that reduced sleep quality accounts for 21% (in 2012-13; 95% CI: 7-35%) and 33% (in 2016-17; 95% CI: 26-64%) of the total effect of perceived traffic noise on mental health. Perceived PTI noise was associated with poorer mental health in 2016-2017 and 2020-2021, with mediation through sleep observed in 2016-2017 (proportion mediated 20% (95% CI:3-38%)). Mediation by sleep quality was stronger among people reporting exposure to multiple noise sources than among people reporting exposure to a single noise source. As much as a third of the association between road traffic noise and poor mental wellbeing may be due to poorer sleep quality following exposure to unwanted noise.

Abstract:One of the most interesting dynamical systems used in numerical analysis is the $QR$ algorithm. An added maneuver to improve the convergence behavior is the $QR$ iteration with shift which is of fundamental importance in eigenvalue computation. This paper is a theoretical study of the set of all isospectral matrices "reachable" by the dynamics of the $QR$ algorithm with shift. A matrix B is said to be reachable by A if $B = RQ + \mu I$, where $A - \mu I = QR$ is the $QR$ decomposition for some $\mu \in \mathbb{R}$. It is proved that in general the $QR$ algorithm with shift is neither reflexive nor symmetric. Examples are given to demonstrate that this relation is neither transitive nor antisymmetric. It is further discovered that the reachable set from a given $n \times n$ matrix A forms $2^{n-1}$ disjoint open loops if n is even and $2^{n-2}$ disjoint components each of which is no longer a loop when n is odd.

Abstract:With rapid urbanization and increase in car ownership, ambient noise pollution resulting from diversified sources (e.g., road traffic, railway, commercial services) has become a severe environmental problem in the populated areas in China. However, research on the spatial variation of noise pollution and its potential effects on urban residents’ mental health has to date been quite scarce in developing countries like China. Using a health survey conducted in Beijing in 2017, we for the first time investigated the spatial distributions of multiple noise pollution perceived by residents in Beijing, including road traffic noise, railway (or subway) noise, commercial noise, and housing renovation (or construction) noise. Our results indicate that there is geographic variability in noise pollution at the neighborhood scale, and road traffic and housing renovation/construction are the principal sources of noise pollution in Beijing. We then employed Bayesian multilevel logistic models to examine the associations between diversified noise pollution and urban residents’ mental health symptoms, including anxiety, stress, fatigue, headache, and sleep disturbance, while controlling for a wide range of confounding factors such as socio-demographics, objective built environment characteristics, social environment and geographic context. The results show that perceived higher noise-pollution exposure is significantly associated with worse mental health, while physical environment variables seem to contribute little to variations in self-reported mental disorders, except for proximity to the main road. Social factors or socio-demographic attributes, such as age and income, are significant covariates of urban residents’ mental health, while the social environment (i.e., community attachment) and housing satisfaction are significantly correlated with anxiety and stress. This study provides empirical evidence on the noise-health relationships in the Chinese context and sheds light on the policy implications for environmental pollution mitigation and healthy city development in China.

Abstract:Background: Most prior studies adopted a static residence-based approach in the assessment of noise exposure, which may lead to biased exposure estimates and misleading findings in noise-health relationships. Relatively little is known about personal noise exposure based on individuals' space-time behavior and its effect on mental health. Objectives: This study aims to analyze and geo-visualize personal exposure to noise in various microenvironments based on individuals' space-time trajectories at a very fine resolution and to further investigate the relationships between mental health and personal noise exposure at both the activity/travel episode level and the entire day level. Methods: Individual-level real-time data were collected with portable noise sensors and GPS trackers from a sample of 117 residents aged 18-60 years old from December 2017 to February 2018 in Beijing, China. Descriptive statistics and geovisualization methods were used to examine how personal noise exposure varied across different activity types, travel modes, and among residents living in the same residential neighborhood on workdays and weekends based on individuals' space-time behaviors. Logistic regression models were applied to examine the relationships between personal noise exposure and self-reported mental health. Results: We observed substantial differences in personal noise exposure across different activity types. The equivalent sound levels (L-eq , dB(A)) for sleeping were the lowest, while the average L-eq for work-related activities was the highest in indoor environments. The noise exposure levels for activities in outdoor environments were higher than indoor noise levels but differed between workdays and weekends. Variations in noise exposure associated with different travel modes were also evident, with the average L-eq for public transport being much higher than that of other travel modes. A-weighted equivalent sound pressure level measured over 24 h for each individual (L-eq,L-24h , dB(A)) varied significantly for residents living in the same residential neighborhood, ranging from 36 to 97 dB(A), with the majority of respondents being exposed to noise levels above 55 dB(A) on both workdays and weekends. Regarding the noise-health relationships, the modeling results showed that individual- level objective noise exposure based on space-time behaviors measured over a 24-h period (L-eq,L-24h) was strongly associated with residents' self-reported mental health. Higher exposure to noise was significantly associated with worse mental health. However, personal noise exposure at the activity/travel episode level (L-eq) was not significantly associated with mental health on weekdays, but this link turned out to be significant in the weekend model. Conclusions: There were large variations in personal noise exposure associated with different activity types and travel modes, and the individual-level noise exposure varied significantly across time of day and between residents living in the same residential neighborhood. Variations in personal exposure strongly depend on different space-time behaviors and individual-specific microenvironments experienced in daily life, and they were significantly correlated with mental health.
