Abstract:Background: Annoyance is regarded as the most common adverse reaction to environmental noise, and yet, relatively little is known of noise annoyance in children, even though children find themselves in a vulnerable developmental period. Noise perception is usually studied as a unidimensional phenomenon with an emphasis on annoyance, disregarding positive appraisals of the acoustic environment. This study aims to explore the joint relationships between traffic noise, other built and natural environment indicators and children's perception of noise and associated environmental restorative quality. Methods: Data are gathered from a cross-section survey among 1251 children (8 - 12 years old) in the cross-border Tyrol area (Austria/Italy). Children and their mothers completed questionnaires on sociodemographics, living conditions, perceived neighborhood quality, and noise annoyance in different situations. Children's residential locations were assigned traffic noise, air pollution, and built environment/natural landscape indicators, including imperviousness density, greenness, and the composite indicator distance to nature (D2N; Rüdisser et al., 2012), which are aimed to allow an integrated prediction of noise perception and restorative quality in these children. Results: This paper will present findings on the association between contextual influences and noise perception in children, with a focus on both positive and negative appraisals of the environment.

Abstract:Abstract Despite the alarming increase in environmental noise pollution, particularly road traffic noise, in developing countries, there seems to be no awareness regarding the long-term impacts of noise, specifically traffic noise, on the health outcomes of individuals exposed to excessive noise. Additionally, there is a dearth of studies on noise and its effects utilising the pollution modelling technique known as Pollution Standard Index (PSI) to analyse the impact of noise pollution on exposed individuals. The aim of this study was to investigate the noise levels commuters are exposed to and to apply PSI to determine the level of exposure. We conducted a cross-sectional study at two taxi ranks, over 28 days. Eighty-four noise measurements were collected using a sound level meter and a dosimeter at different times of the day and month, peak vs off-peak hours and busy days vs quiet days. Data were collected between April and July 2019. We used the Pollution Standard Index to analyse the data. Noise levels were above the permissible commercial noise levels as they fell within the extremely dangerous noise sensitivity zone as determined by the PSI. Furthermore, the noise levels fell below the WHO maximum permissible level of 90 dB. There was no statistical difference between the means of the open and closed ranks. Dosimeter noise level recordings fell within the satisfactory zone as measurements were below 300 PSI, which is considered unhealthy. There is a need to raise awareness on the dangers and effects of noise pollution in developing countries, as their populations are exposed to road traffic noise.

A novel automatic liver segmentation technique for MR images

Abstract:This paper presents an automatic liver segmentation algorithm based on fast marching and improved fuzzy cluster methods, which can segment liver from abdominal MR images accurately. The developed method is composed of three major steps: first, fast marching method and convex hull algorithm are applied to roughly extract the liver's boundary and topology, which provides a basic estimation for the subsequent calculations; second, an improved fuzzy cluster method, combining with a multiple cycles processing, is designed to refine the segmentation result; third, based on the segmented results, the liver is visualized by Marching Cube method. There are two major difficulties in MRIs liver segmentation: one is that the boundaries between liver and adjacent tissues generally have uniform intensity distributions, which often leads to over segmentation of the liver; the other is that inner vascular inside the liver commonly leads to segmentation leakage. In order to solve these two problems, a prior knowledge based fuzzy cluster method is proposed. Experiments show that the developed method is effective and robust for liver segmentation of MR images.

The Relationship between Noise Pollution and Depression and Implications for Healthy Ageing: A Spatial Analysis Using Routinely Collected Primary Care Data

Abstract:Environmental noise is a significant public health concern, ranking among the top environmental risks to citizens' health and quality of life. Despite various studies exploring the effects of atmospheric pollution on mental health, spatial investigations into the effects of noise pollution have been notably absent. This study addresses this gap by investigating the association between noise pollution (from road and rail networks) and depression for the first time in England, and first explores localised patterns based on area deprivation. Depression prevalence, defined as the percentage of patients with a recorded depression diagnosis, was calculated in small areas within Cheshire and Merseyside ICS using the Quality and Outcomes Framework Indicators dataset for 2019. Strategic noise mapping for rail and road noise (LDEN) was employed to quantify noise pollution, indicating a 24-hour annual average noise level with distinct weightings for evening and night periods. The English Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) was utilised to represent neighbourhood deprivation. Geographical Weighted Regression and Generalised Structural Equation Spatial Modelling (GSESM) were applied to estimate relationships between transportation noise, depression prevalence, and IMD at the Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) level. While transportation noise showed a low direct effect on depression levels in Cheshire and Merseyside ICS, it significantly mediated other factors linked to depression prevalence. Notably, GSESM revealed that health deprivation and disability was strongly associated (0.62) with depression through the indirect effect of environmental noise, particularly where transportation noise exceeds 55 dB on a 24-hour basis. Comprehending variations in noise exposure across different areas is paramount. This research not only provides valuable insights for informed decision-making but also lays the groundwork for implementing noise mitigation measures. These measures are aimed at addressing mental health inequalities, enhancing the quality of life for the exposed population and supporting a healthier ageing process in urban environments. The findings also carry crucial implications for public health, specifically in tailoring targeted interventions to mitigate noise-related health risks in areas where noise burdens exceed 55 dB, and residents may experience health deprivation and disability.

Abstract:A pilot survey was undertaken to elucidate sleep quality, as well as psycho-social and medical symptoms and mood, among people who had lived for many years in an area with high levels of road traffic noise during night hours and inhabitants of a quiet control area: 106 personal interviews were performed and specific questionnaires on sleep and mood answered by 63 persons during three consecutive days. It was found that both sleep quality and mood (social orientation, activity, wellbeing and extroversion) were depressed in the noisy area as compared with a control area. Symptoms of tiredness, headache and nervous stomach disorders were more frequent. A significant relationship between sensitivity to noise and sleep quality was also found. From this pilot study hypotheses may be formulated about a relationship between environmental noise and different psycho-social and medical symptoms. It is suggested that similar studies on a larger scale are performed to elucidate long-term effects of noise.

Abstract:It has been shown that there is a correlation between the fusogenecity of synthetic peptides corresponding to the N-terminal segment of wild-type and mutant forms of simian immunodeficiency virus gp32 (SIV) and their mode of insertion into lipid bilayers. Fusogenic activity is only observed when the peptide inserts into the bilayer with an oblique orientation. Since bilayer destabilization is a necessary step in membrane fusion, we investigate how fusion peptides, which insert at different orientations into lipid bilayers, structurally affect model membranes. We use X-ray diffraction to investigate the structural effects of two synthetic peptides on three different lipid systems. One peptide corresponds to the wild-type sequence (SIVwt), which inserts into the membrane at an oblique angle and is fusogenic. The other peptide has a rearranged sequence (SIVmutV), inserts into the membrane along the bilayer normal, and is nonfusogenic. Our results are expressed through different structural effects, which depend on the lipid system: for example, (i) disordering of the L alpha phase as evidenced by the broadening of the diffraction peaks, (ii) morphological convertion of multilamellar vesicles into unilamellar vesicles, (iii) decrease of the hexagonal phase cell parameter when SIVwt is added, and (iv) change in the conditions for the formation of cubic phases as well as its kinetic stability over a range of temperatures. Some of these observations are explicable based on the fact that the SIVwt destabilizes bilayers by inducing a negative monolayer curvature, while the SIVmutV destabilizes bilayers by inducing a positive monolayer curvature. Finally, we present a model which describes how these findings correlate with fusogenic activity and fusion inhibitory activity, respectively.
Study on Annoyance and Sleep Disturbance Induced by Combined Noises from Road Traffic and Viaduct Rail Transit

Abstract:In order to evaluate the adverse effects of combined traffic noise, a face-to-face survey was carried out among 1433 local residents aging from 15 to 75 years. The relationships between the percentage of highly annoyed (%HA), sleep disturbance and acoustical/non-acoustical factors (Ldn, age, gender, residence time, time at home, etc.) were analyzed, respectively. Results showed that %HA caused by road–rail combined traffic noise (%HAroad–rail) was between %HA caused by road dominant noise (%HAroad) and %HA caused by viaduct rail transit dominant noise (%HArail) at same Ldn, which could be explained by partial masking effect. When Ldn > 63 dB, %HArail was higher than %HAroad, which may be related to that the visibility of noise source (trains) and the vibration generated during pass-by of trains could indirectly cause an increment of noise annoyance. When Ldn < 63 dB, %HArail was lower than %HAroad. This may be explained by that the noise disturbance caused by maximal A-weighted sound pressure level of railway noise events in the area dominated by road traffic noise had more influence on annoyance than that in the area dominated by viaduct rail transit noise. Meanwhile, %HA showed a rising trend with the increase in the proportion of nighttime in total time at home, which may be related to that people had a less tolerance to noise at night. The sleep disturbance reached the maximum in the age-group of 30–40 years, which was correlated with that middle-aged people had higher stress and higher noise sensitivity.

Abstract:The relationship between noise annoyance and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) still needs to be fully elucidated. Thus, we examined the relationship between noise annoyance and CVD risk in a large population-based cohort study. Cross-sectional (N = 15,010, aged 35–74 years, baseline investigation period 2007–2012) and prospective data (5- and 10-year follow-up from 2012 to 2022) from the Gutenberg Health Study were used to examine the relationship between noise annoyance due to different sources and risk of prevalent and incident CVD comprising atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, stroke, chronic heart failure, peripheral artery disease, and venous thromboembolism. In cross-sectional analyses, noise annoyance was an independent risk factor for prevalent CVD, with the strongest associations seen for noise annoyance during sleep (e.g., neighborhood noise annoyance: odds ratio 1.20, 95% confidence interval 1.13–1.27, p < 0.0001). While in the 10-year follow-up, mostly positive associations (although not significant) between noise annoyance and incident CVD were observed, no indication of increased CVD risk was observed after 5 years of follow-up. Noise annoyance due to different sources was associated with prevalent CVD, whereas only weak associations with incident CVD were found. Further large-scale studies are needed to establish the relationship between noise annoyance and risk of CVD.

An assessment of quality of life using the WHOQOL-BREF among participants living in the vicinity of wind turbines

Abstract:Living within the vicinity of wind turbines may have adverse impacts on health measures associated with quality of life (QOL). There are few studies in this area and inconsistent findings preclude definitive conclusions regarding the impact that exposure to wind turbine noise (WTN) may have on QOL. In the current study (officially titled the Community Noise and Health Study or CNHS), the World Health Organization QOL-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire provided an evaluation of QOL in relation to WTN levels among randomly selected participants aged 18-79 (606 males, 632 females) living between 0.25 and 11.22 km from wind turbines (response rate 78.9%). In the multiple regression analyses, WTN levels were not found to be related to scores on the Physical, Psychological, Social or Environment domains, or to rated QOL and Satisfaction with Health questions. However, some wind turbine-related variables were associated with scores on the WHOQOL-BREF, irrespective of WTN levels. Hearing wind turbines for less than one year (compared to not at all and greater than one year) was associated with improved (i.e. higher) scores on the Psychological domain (p=0.0108). Lower scores on both the Physical and Environment domains (p=0.0218 and p=0.0372, respectively), were observed among participants reporting high visual annoyance toward wind turbines. Personal benefit from having wind turbines in the area was related to higher scores on the Physical domain (p=0.0417). Other variables significantly related to one or more domains, included sex, age, marital status, employment, education, income, alcohol consumption, smoking status, chronic diseases and sleep disorders. Collectively, results do not support an association between exposure to WTN up to 46 dBA and QOL assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire.
The mediating role of sleep in the association between environmental noise and mental health

Abstract:Exposure to environmental noise in residential areas has been associated with adverse mental health outcomes; however, the mechanisms of this relationship remain underexplored. This study investigates the contribution of reduced sleep quality to the negative association between perceived neighbourhood environmental noise exposure and poor mental health. We used the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey and applied causal mediation methods to examine the role of sleep in the association between self-reported exposure to road traffic noise and plane, train and industry (PTI) noise and mental wellbeing at three time points between 2012 and 2021. Road traffic noise was associated with poorer mental health in 2012-13 and 2016-17, while no evidence of an association was observed in 2020-2021 (the period of COVID-related lockdowns in Australia). For the years where a significant association was observed, mediation analyses suggest that reduced sleep quality accounts for 21% (in 2012-13; 95% CI: 7-35%) and 33% (in 2016-17; 95% CI: 26-64%) of the total effect of perceived traffic noise on mental health. Perceived PTI noise was associated with poorer mental health in 2016-2017 and 2020-2021, with mediation through sleep observed in 2016-2017 (proportion mediated 20% (95% CI:3-38%)). Mediation by sleep quality was stronger among people reporting exposure to multiple noise sources than among people reporting exposure to a single noise source. As much as a third of the association between road traffic noise and poor mental wellbeing may be due to poorer sleep quality following exposure to unwanted noise.

Abstract:Extensive research has shown that noise has detrimental effects on learning in classrooms, yet schools remain noisy environments. In addition, little is known about the students' insight into their subjective reaction to noise. Students' awareness of noise, as well as their perception of its effects on their affective and bodily states, remain unanswered. In the current study, the self-reported experience of noise and reaction towards noise, which was collected by way of a questionnaire, was assessed for 408 students in primary and secondary schools in Québec. Results suggest that about half of the students experience affective and bodily reactions to noise, and students who report having a negative affective reaction to noise are also more prone to report feeling this noise in their bodies. The results of this study offer a comprehensive picture of the students' subjective (affective and bodily) state in relation to noise in schools.

Abstract:Industrial noise sources are among the environmental noise sources that are ranked second among the causes of ill health in Europe by the World Health Organization. The aim of this paper is to summarize and review of published information focusing on noise annoyance from industrial activities and mining. A search for articles was performed using the bibliographic databases platforms. The epidemiological evidence shows that environmental noise may be associated with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, impaired cognitive development in children, mental health, post-irritability, and sleep disturbances. As a result of efforts to minimize the effects of industrial noise on human health, the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority published A Guide to the Noise Policy for Industry in 2017, which sets out recommended noise levels, methods, and procedures for noise management based on the latest scientific evidence. Social networks can be used to assess the population's noise annoyance and to verify the effectiveness of the measures. The industrial noise sources are typically defined by low-frequency noise. Low-frequency noise has very low attenuation and is only slightly affected by obstacles, therefore it can be a major cause of night noise annoyance. An association was confirmed between exposure to low-frequency noise and sleep disturbance, psychological problems, cognitive impairment, increased social conflicts, anxiety, emotional instability, nervousness, and reduced mental performance - concentration, and visual perception. In view of the long tradition of mining and industry, the assessment of noise from these activities from the perspective of its impacts on human health is an inherent part of legislative processes. Abstract:Health Canada, in collaboration with Advanis, conducted the Canadian Perspectives on Environmental Noise Survey (CPENS) to investigate expectations and attitudes toward environmental noise in rural and non-rural Canada. The CPENS, a 26-item questionnaire, was completed online by 6647 randomly selected Canadians, age 18 y and older between April and May 2021. The prevalence of reporting their area as often or always calm, quiet, and relaxing was 76.8%, 64%, and 48.4% in rural/remote, suburban, and urban, respectively. A high expectation of quiet was less prevalent yet followed the same pattern: rural/remote (58.2%), suburban (37.4%), and urban (21.8%). Self-reported health status and noise sensitivity were unrelated to geographic region. A high magnitude of non-specific sleep disturbance over the previous 12 months was reported by 7.8% overall; highest among urban dwellers (9.8%), followed by suburban (7.2%) and rural/remote (5.5%) dwellers (p < 0.01). High annoyance toward road traffic noise was 8.5% overall, and significantly higher in urban (10.5%), relative to suburban (7.9%) and rural/remote (6.6%) areas (p < 0.0001). Annoyance toward noise from rail, aircraft, mining, industry, marine activity, construction, wind turbines, and landscaping equipment is reported. The analysis also explores potential differences between Indigenous Peoples of Canada and non-Indigenous Canadians in their attitudes and expectations toward environmental noise.
Effects of syntactic and semantic argument structure on sentence repetition in agrammatism: Things we can learn from particles and prepositions

Abstract:Background: Sentence production impairment in aphasia has been attributed to several possible sources that are not mutually exclusive. Linguistic accounts often attribute the difficulty to the complexity of a verb's syntactic and/or semantic argument structure. Cognitive processing accounts emphasise the reduced processing capacity observed in agrammatic aphasia, which in turn has been attributed to reduced semantic short-term memory (STM) or slowed processing. Aims: In this study we used verb particles and prepositions to investigate effects of differences in syntactic and semantic argument structure on sentence repetition in aphasia. We predicted that verb particles and sentences containing verb-particle constructions would be easier to repeat than prepositions and prepositional transitive sentences, as the former have a less-complex semantic and syntactic argument structure than the latter. Also, semantic and phonological spans were assessed to determine if a reduction in either capacity correlates with repetition ability. Methods & Procedures: Participants were eight individuals with chronic aphasia. The experimental task was repetition of transitive sentences balanced for length and lexical content containing either verb particles or prepositional object structures. Accuracy of sentence repetition and repetition of verb particles and prepositions within sentences was examined. We calculated the effect of structural complexity on the sentence repetition task as the difference between proportion correct of verb-particle constructions and prepositional transitives. Semantic and phonological STM spans and word spans were also assessed and correlated with this measure of the structural complexity effect on sentence repetition. Outcomes & Results: Verb-particle sentences were repeated correctly significantly more often than prepositional transitive sentences, and within those sentences verbal particles were repeated correctly significantly more often than prepositions. The effect was strongly associated with fluency scores: it was present in participants with low fluency scores, but not in those with high fluency scores. The phonological, but not the semantic, STM probe span measure correlated with both the difference in accurate repetition of verb-particle and prepositional transitive sentences and the particles and prepositions within those sentences. Conclusions: Results indicate that differences in argument structure of particle and preposition constructions influence sentence repetition in agrammatic aphasia. The finding that lower fluency scores are associated with poorer performance on more complex structures suggests that this effect is associated with agrammatism. The impact of these structural distinctions between particles and prepositions should be taken into account during development of treatment stimuli for those with agrammatism.
A survey on exposure-response relationships for road, rail, and aircraft noise annoyance: Differences between continuous and intermittent noise

Abstract:The aim of the present study is to establish exposure-response relationships reflecting the percentage highly annoyed (%HA) as functions of road traffic, railway, and aircraft noise exposure, measured as day-evening-night level (Lden), as well as to elucidate the degree to which the acoustic indicator Intermittency Ratio (IR), which reflects the "eventfulness" of a noise situation, predicts noise annoyance. We conducted a mixed-mode representative population survey in a stratified random sample of 5592 residents exposed to transportation noise all over Switzerland. Source-specific noise exposure was calculated for each floor and each façade based on comprehensive traffic data. Noise annoyance was measured using the ICBEN 11-point scale. The survey was carried out in 4 waves at different times of the year. We hypothesized that in addition to Lden, the effects of noise on annoyance can be better explained when also considering the intensity of short-term variations of noise level over time. We therefore incorporated the acoustic indicator IR in the statistical models. For all noise sources, results revealed significant associations between Lden and %HA after controlling for confounders and independent predictors such as IR (measured over 24 h), exposure to other transportation noise sources, sex and age, language, home ownership, education level, living duration, temperature, and access to a quiet side of the dwelling. Aircraft noise annoyance scored markedly higher than annoyance to railway and road traffic noise at the same Lden level. Railway noise elicited higher percentages of highly annoyed persons than road traffic noise. Results furthermore suggest that for road traffic noise, IR has an additional effect on %HA and can explain shifts of the exposure-response curve of up to about 6 dB between low IR and high IR exposure situations, possibly due to the effect of different durations of noise-free intervals between events. For railway and aircraft noise annoyance, the predictive value of IR was limited.
A Multilevel Analysis of Perceived Noise Pollution, Geographic Contexts and Mental Health in Beijing

Abstract:With rapid urbanization and increase in car ownership, ambient noise pollution resulting from diversified sources (e.g., road traffic, railway, commercial services) has become a severe environmental problem in the populated areas in China. However, research on the spatial variation of noise pollution and its potential effects on urban residents’ mental health has to date been quite scarce in developing countries like China. Using a health survey conducted in Beijing in 2017, we for the first time investigated the spatial distributions of multiple noise pollution perceived by residents in Beijing, including road traffic noise, railway (or subway) noise, commercial noise, and housing renovation (or construction) noise. Our results indicate that there is geographic variability in noise pollution at the neighborhood scale, and road traffic and housing renovation/construction are the principal sources of noise pollution in Beijing. We then employed Bayesian multilevel logistic models to examine the associations between diversified noise pollution and urban residents’ mental health symptoms, including anxiety, stress, fatigue, headache, and sleep disturbance, while controlling for a wide range of confounding factors such as socio-demographics, objective built environment characteristics, social environment and geographic context. The results show that perceived higher noise-pollution exposure is significantly associated with worse mental health, while physical environment variables seem to contribute little to variations in self-reported mental disorders, except for proximity to the main road. Social factors or socio-demographic attributes, such as age and income, are significant covariates of urban residents’ mental health, while the social environment (i.e., community attachment) and housing satisfaction are significantly correlated with anxiety and stress. This study provides empirical evidence on the noise-health relationships in the Chinese context and sheds light on the policy implications for environmental pollution mitigation and healthy city development in China.
