Abstract:Health Canada, in collaboration with Statistics Canada, and other external experts, conducted the Community Noise and Health Study to better understand the impacts of wind turbine noise (WTN) on health and well-being. A cross-sectional epidemiological study was carried out between May and September 2013 in southwestern Ontario and Prince Edward Island on 1238 randomly selected participants (606 males, 632 females) aged 18-79 years, living between 0.25 and 11.22 km from operational wind turbines. Calculated outdoor WTN levels at the dwelling reached 46 dBA. Response rate was 78.9% and did not significantly differ across sample strata. Self-reported health effects (e.g., migraines, tinnitus, dizziness, etc.), sleep disturbance, sleep disorders, quality of life, and perceived stress were not related to WTN levels. Visual and auditory perception of wind turbines as reported by respondents increased significantly with increasing WTN levels as did high annoyance toward several wind turbine features, including the following: noise, blinking lights, shadow flicker, visual impacts, and vibrations. Concern for physical safety and closing bedroom windows to reduce WTN during sleep also increased with increasing WTN levels. Other sample characteristics are discussed in relation to WTN levels. Beyond annoyance, results do not support an association between exposure to WTN up to 46 dBA and the evaluated health-related endpoints.
Estimating annoyance to calculated wind turbine shadow flicker is improved when variables associated with wind turbine noise exposure are considered

Abstract:The Community Noise and Health Study conducted by Health Canada included randomly selected participants aged 18-79 yrs (606 males, 632 females, response rate 78.9%), living between 0.25 and 11.22 km from operational wind turbines. Annoyance to wind turbine noise (WTN) and other features, including shadow flicker (SF) was assessed. The current analysis reports on the degree to which estimating high annoyance to wind turbine shadow flicker (HAWTSF) was improved when variables known to be related to WTN exposure were also considered. As SF exposure increased [calculated as maximum minutes per day (SFm)], HAWTSF increased from 3.8% at 0 ≤ SFm < 10 to 21.1% at SFm ≥ 30, p < 0.0001. For each unit increase in SFm the odds ratio was 2.02 [95% confidence interval: (1.68,2.43)]. Stepwise regression models for HAWTSF had a predictive strength of up to 53% with 10% attributed to SFm. Variables associated with HAWTSF included, but were not limited to, annoyance to other wind turbine-related features, concern for physical safety, and noise sensitivity. Reported dizziness was also retained in the final model at p = 0.0581. Study findings add to the growing science base in this area and may be helpful in identifying factors associated with community reactions to SF exposure from wind turbines.

Abstract:Certain skin disorders have now been demonstrated to be affected by alcohol misuse, in particular psoriasis and discoid eczema. The pattern of involvement in psoriasis differs from psoriasis vulgaris in character and distribution, and tends to be more difficult to treat. Discoid eczema appears to be specifically related to alcohol excess and is associated with deranged liver function tests. Rosacea, post-adolescent acne, superficial infections and porphyria cutanea tarda may also be markers of alcohol misuse. These disorders occur early and are quite distinct from the traditional cutaneous stigmata of established liver disease. The association between alcohol and skin disease is under-reported, as alcohol misuse may go undetected in a general clinic unless specifically sought. Alcohol has a profound influence on immune function and induces changes in the cutaneous vasculature. The relevance of these effects to the pathophysiology of alcohol-related skin disease is discussed.
Self-reported and measured stress related responses associated with exposure to wind turbine noise

Abstract:The current study was the first to assess stress reactions associated with wind turbine noise (WTN) exposure using self-reported and objective measures. Randomly selected participants, aged 18-79 yr (606 males; 632 females), living between 0.25 and 11.22 km from wind turbines, were exposed to outdoor calculated WTN levels up to 46 dBA (response rate 78.9%). Multiple regression modeling left the great majority (77%-89%) of the variance in perceived stress scale (PSS) scores, hair cortisol concentrations, resting blood pressure, and heart rate unaccounted for, and WTN exposure had no apparent influence on any of these endpoints. PSS scores were positively, but weakly, related to cortisol concentrations and resting heart rate (Pearson r = 0.13 and r = 0.08, respectively). Across WTN categories, modeled mean PSS scores ranged from 13.15 to 13.84 (p = 0.8614). Modeled geometric means for hair cortisol concentrations, resting mean systolic, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate were 150.54-191.12 ng/g (p = 0.5416), 113.38-116.82 mmHg (p = 0.4990), 67.98-70.34 mmHg (p = 0.5006), and 68.24-70.71 bpm (p = 0.5223), respectively. Irrespective of WTN levels, diastolic blood pressure appeared to be slightly (2.90 mmHg 95% CI: 0.75,5.05) higher among participants highly annoyed by blinking lights on turbines (p = 0.0081). Collectively, the findings do not support an association between exposure to WTN up to 46 dBA and elevated self-reported and objectively defined measures of stress.
An assessment of quality of life using the WHOQOL-BREF among participants living in the vicinity of wind turbines

Abstract:Living within the vicinity of wind turbines may have adverse impacts on health measures associated with quality of life (QOL). There are few studies in this area and inconsistent findings preclude definitive conclusions regarding the impact that exposure to wind turbine noise (WTN) may have on QOL. In the current study (officially titled the Community Noise and Health Study or CNHS), the World Health Organization QOL-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire provided an evaluation of QOL in relation to WTN levels among randomly selected participants aged 18-79 (606 males, 632 females) living between 0.25 and 11.22 km from wind turbines (response rate 78.9%). In the multiple regression analyses, WTN levels were not found to be related to scores on the Physical, Psychological, Social or Environment domains, or to rated QOL and Satisfaction with Health questions. However, some wind turbine-related variables were associated with scores on the WHOQOL-BREF, irrespective of WTN levels. Hearing wind turbines for less than one year (compared to not at all and greater than one year) was associated with improved (i.e. higher) scores on the Psychological domain (p=0.0108). Lower scores on both the Physical and Environment domains (p=0.0218 and p=0.0372, respectively), were observed among participants reporting high visual annoyance toward wind turbines. Personal benefit from having wind turbines in the area was related to higher scores on the Physical domain (p=0.0417). Other variables significantly related to one or more domains, included sex, age, marital status, employment, education, income, alcohol consumption, smoking status, chronic diseases and sleep disorders. Collectively, results do not support an association between exposure to WTN up to 46 dBA and QOL assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire.

Abstract:In order to investigate the noise impacts of wind turbines with a high single-machine capacity (2 MW) on the residents living around, a face-to-face questionnaire survey was conducted. The moderating factors of noise annoyance, noise exposure–response relationships as well as noise impacts on sleep and self-reported health were investigated. Results showed that noise sensitivity, attitude towards wind turbines’ visual impact on the landscape, general opinion on wind turbines and noise intensity had statistically significant impacts on annoyance due to wind turbine noise. Compared with wind turbines with lower single-machine capacity in relevant studies, those with higher single-machine capacity in this study induced higher annoyance at the same Lden, which was relative to the visibility of wind turbines, background noise levels of wind farm area, etc. Noise sensitivity, noise annoyance and noise intensity, which had no significant correlation with self-reported health effects, were statistically significantly correlated with sleep disturbance on respondents.
Perception and annoyance due to wind turbine noise--a dose-response relationship

Abstract:Installed global wind power increased by 26% during 2003, with U.S and Europe accounting for 90% of the cumulative capacity. Little is known about wind turbines' impact on people living in their vicinity. The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of annoyance due to wind turbine noise and to study dose-response relationships. Interrelationships between noise annoyance and sound characteristics, as well as the influence of subjective variables such as attitude and noise sensitivity, were also assessed. A cross-sectional study was performed in Sweden in 2000. Responses were obtained through questionnaires (n = 351; response rate 68.4%), and doses were calculated as A-weighted sound pressure levels for each respondent. A statistically significant dose-response relationship was found, showing higher proportion of people reporting perception and annoyance than expected from the present dose-response relationships for transportation noise. The unexpected high proportion of annoyance could be due to visual interference, influencing noise annoyance, as well as the presence of intrusive sound characteristics. The respondents' attitude to the visual impact of wind turbines on the landscape scenery was found to influence noise annoyance.

Abstract:In order to achieve global and national climate goals, wind energy production in the Netherlands and elsewhere will likely continue to grow, and the size and capacity of new and replaced turbines will increase. Therefore, it is important to understand the impact of wind turbines on people living in their vicinity. Current evidence on health effects of living in the vicinity of wind turbines in The Netherlands is lacking. To fill this knowledge gap we conducted a nationwide survey among 3500 people living within 5 km distance of wind turbines, of whom 662 people (19%) participated. They completed a questionnaire about annoyance and sleep disturbance responses to wind turbine related exposures (e.g., mechanical sound, sound of blades, and visual aspects), as well as questions about general health, perception of risks, and attitudes. Information about local wind turbine features (distance, hub height, capacity, and rotor diameter) was available for each address. This paper presents preliminary descriptive results for annoyance and sleep disturbance responses to wind turbine sound. These findings and their limitations are discussed against the background of the challenges encountered and considerations for future research.
Influencing Factors Identification and Prediction of Noise Annoyance—A Case Study on Substation Noise

Abstract:Noise-induced annoyance is one person’s individual adverse reaction to noise. Noise annoyance is an important basis for determining the acceptability of environmental noise exposure and for formulating environmental noise standards. It is influenced by both acoustic and non-acoustic factors. To identify non-acoustic factors significantly influencing noise annoyance, 40 noise samples with a loudness level of 60–90 phon from 500–1000 kV substations were selected in this study. A total of 246 subjects were recruited randomly. Using the assessment scale of noise annoyance specified by ISO 15666-2021, listening tests were conducted. Meanwhile, basic information and noise sensitivity of each subject were obtained through a questionnaire and the Weinstein’s noise sensitivity scale. Based on the five non-acoustic indices which were identified in this study and had a significant influence on noise annoyance, a prediction model of annoyance from substation noise was proposed by a stepwise regression. Results showed that the influence weight of acoustic indices in the model accounted for 80% in which the equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure level and the sound pressure level above 1/1 octave band of 125 Hz were 65% and 15%, respectively. The influence weight of non-acoustic indices entering the model was 20% in which age, education level, noise sensitivity, income, and noisy degree in the workplace were 8%, 2%, 4%, 4%, and 2%, respectively. The result of this study can provide a basis for factors identification and prediction of noise annoyance.

Abstract:Commissioned by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment, an update of an earlier narrative review was prepared for the literature published between 2017 and mid-2020 about the effects of wind turbine sound on the health of local residents. Specific attention was hereby given to the health effects of low-frequency sound and infrasound. The Netherlands Institute for Public Health and the Environment and Mundonovo sound research collected the scientific literature on the effect of wind turbines on annoyance, sleep disturbance, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic effects, as well as mental and cognitive impacts. It also investigated what is known about annoyance from visual aspects of wind turbines and other non-acoustic factors, such as the local decision-making process. From the literature study, annoyance again came forward as the most important consequence of sound: the louder the sound (in dB) of wind turbines, the stronger the annoyance response was. The literature did not show that “low-frequency sound” (sound with a low pitch) results in extra annoyance on top of normal sound. Results of scientific research for other health effects are either not available or inconsistent, and we can conclude that a clear association with wind turbine related sound levels cannot be confirmed. There is evidence that long-term effects are related to the annoyance people experience. These results confirm earlier conclusions. There is increasing evidence that annoyance is lower when people can participate in the siting process. Worries of residents should be addressed in an early stage, by involving them in the process of planning and decision making.

Abstract:BackgroundThe wind turbine’s sound seems to have a proportional effect on health of people living near to wind farms. This study aimed to investigate the effect of noise emitted from wind turbines on general health, sleep and annoyance among workers of manjil wind farm, Iran.Materials and methodsA total number of 53 workers took part in this study. Based on the type of job, they were categorized into three groups of maintenance, security and office staff. The persons’ exposure at each job-related group was measured by eight-hour equivalent sound level (LAeq, 8 h). A Noise annoyance scale, Epworth sleepiness scale and 28-item general health questionnaire was used for gathering data from workers. The data were analyzed through Multivariate Analysis of variance (MANOVA) test, Pillai’s Trace test, Paired comparisons analysis and Multivariate regression test were used in the R software.Results and discussionThe results showed that, response variables (annoyance, sleep disturbance and health) were significantly different between job groups. The results also indicated that sleep disturbance as well as noise exposure had a significant effect on general health. Noise annoyance and distance from wind turbines could significantly explain about 44.5 and 34.2 % of the variance in sleep disturbance and worker’s general health, respectively. General health was significantly different in different age groups while age had no significant impact on sleep disturbance. The results were reverse for distance because it had no significant impact on health, but sleep disturbance was significantly affected.ConclusionsWe came to this conclusion that wind turbines noise can directly impact on annoyance, sleep and health. This type of energy generation can have potential health risks for wind farm workers. However, further research is needed to confirm the results of this study.

Evaluation of risk perception related with environmental noise among residents living in different vicinities of wind turbines

Abstract:This cross-sectional study assessed residents' risk perceptions and associated factors in three rural areas by administering a face-to-face questionnaire to 282 subjects. The association between the perception of risk related to wind turbines and related factors such as noise and annoyance was analysed. Outdoor A-weighted sound pressure levels were measured for all. According to regression analysis, age (B: -0.008, 95% CI: -0.015/-0.002), education (B: 0.415, 95% CI: 0.148/-0.682), noise level day (B: -0.040, 95% CI: -0.068/-0. 013), noise annoyance indoors (B: 0.504, 95% CI: 0.227/0.781) and distance (B: 0.000, 95% CI: 0.000/0.000) had a significant effect on high risk perception (p < 0.05). This demonstrates that, in addition to noise, non-acoustic factors also influence risk perception. Ensuring community participation and considering distance before installation could prevent negative risk perceptions and annoyance. .

Abstract:As a renewable energy source, wind energy harvesting provides a desirable solution to address the environmental concerns associated with energy production to satisfy the increasingly global demand. Over the years, the penetration of wind turbines has experienced a rapid growth, however, the impacts of turbine noise correspondingly become a major concern in wind energy harvesting. Recent studies indicate that the noise emitted by turbine operating could increase the risk of nuisance, which might further affect the well-being of local residents. However, the main factors affecting turbine noise assessment and to what extent they contribute to the assessment are still unclear. In this study, a survey-based approach is developed to identify these major factors and to explore the interactions between the factors and assessment results. Principal component analysis method was adapted to extract key factors; followed by reliability assessment, validity analysis, descriptive assessment, and correlation analysis were conducted to test the robust of the proposed methodology, as well as to examine the interactions between variables. Regression analysis was finally employed to measure the impacts on results contributed by the key factors. Findings of this study indicate that key factors including physical conditions, control capacity, and subjective opinions are of significant impact on residents’ response to wind turbine noise, while the factor of subjective opinions contributes predominately to the assessment results. Further validations also indicate that the proposed approach is robust and can be extensively applied in survey-based assessments for other fields.

Abstract:The number of onshore wind turbines in Europe has greatly increased over recent years, a trend which can be expected to continue. However, the effects of wind turbine noise on long-term health outcomes for residents living near wind farms is largely unknown, although sleep disturbance may be a cause for particular concern. Presented here are two pilot studies with the aim of examining the acoustical properties of wind turbine noise that might be of special relevance regarding effects on sleep. In both pilots, six participants spent five consecutive nights in a sound environment laboratory. During three of the nights, participants were exposed to wind turbine noise with variations in sound pressure level, amplitude modulation strength and frequency, spectral content, turbine rotational frequency and beating behaviour. The impact of noise on sleep was measured using polysomnography and questionnaires. During nights with wind turbine noise there was more frequent awakening, less deep sleep, less continuous N2 sleep and increased subjective disturbance compared to control nights. The findings indicated that amplitude modulation strength, spectral frequency and the presence of strong beats might be of particular importance for adverse sleep effects. The findings will be used in the development of experimental exposures for use in future, larger studies.

Abstract:The definition of noise annoyance used in this paper, is that, in a certain acoustic environment, the negative subjective response including distraction, disturbance, displeasure and anxiety can be described as noise annoyance. We choose two types of typical areas where the characteristic of the acoustic environment are similar to study the influence of the visibility of the source of noise (whether the source of noise can be seen or not) on noise annoyance. In our research, the degree of noise annoyance is divided into five grades according to previous international research: “not at all,” “slightly,” “moderately,” “very” and “extremely”, they are typical fuzzy description. The appraisal of subjective annoying response is a fuzzy event. So the fuzzy mathematic method is applied to calculate the probability of noise annoyance to evaluate the influence of the visibility of the source on an individual's degree of subjective noise annoyance. The conclusion shows that under the same acoustic environment, when the source of noise can be seen the corresponding noise annoyance is higher, this finding will furnish us with a new approach in the research of the noise control.
An Experiment Study on the Identification of Noise Sensitive Individuals and the Influence of Noise Sensitivity on Perceived Annoyance

Abstract:The perceived annoyance of noise has a great difference among individuals with different noise sensitivity. This paper proposed a method to identify noise sensitive individuals based on the experimental results of noise perceived annoyance and studied the influence of noise sensitivity on perceived annoyance. 14 pink noise samples with loudness level (L-N) between 30 phon and 95 phon and 59 transformer noise samples with L-N between 60 phon and 90 phon were selected. 337 subjects (undergraduate students) were recruited randomly. The noise sensitivity score (NSS) of each subject was obtained through the Weinstein's noise sensitivity scale. Using the scale of noise annoyance assessment (11-point numerical scale) specified by ISO 15666-2003, perceived annoyance experiments of noise were conducted in a soundproof room. The subjects were divided into several groups according to the NSS of each subject. According to the difference of perceived annoyance between different groups, a certain NSS was chosen as the threshold to identify highly and lowly noise sensitive individuals. Results showed that the threshold was 110, i.e., the NSS of each highly noise sensitive individual was larger than or equal to 110 and the NSS of each lowly noise sensitive individual was smaller than 110. The perceived annoyance of highly sensitive individuals caused by transformer noise was 1.4 larger than that of lowly sensitive individuals on average. Based on 21 acoustic factors and 1 non-acoustic factor (noise sensitivity), the model of perceived annoyance of transformer noise established by stepwise regression indicated that the weight of the influence of noise sensitivity on perceived annoyance was up to 26%. The results of this study can provide a basis for identifying noise sensitive individuals and determining the influence of noise sensitivity on perceived annoyance. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Annoyance Response to Low Frequency Noise with Tonal Components: A Case Study on Transformer Noise

Abstract:In order to study how acoustical factors influence annoyance responses to low frequency noise with tonal components, this research has selected 220kV and 500kV transformer noises as examples and an 11-point numerical scale as an evaluation tool, in which the percentage of highly annoyed (%HA) and mean annoyance (MA) are chosen to represent annoyance caused by noises. Results show that a logistic curve is well suited for describing the exposure–response relationship between the A-weighted equivalent sound pressure level (LAeq) and %HA (or MA) of the transformer noise. With the same LAeq, 220kV transformer noise is more annoying than 500kV transformer noise in terms of %HA and MA, which is related to different sharpness, roughness and tonality of the noises caused by transformers of the two voltage levels. Based on stepwise regression analysis, multiple linear regression models are further developed by using LAeq and roughness as acoustical parameters to predict the %HA and MA of transformer noise. Compared with the linear regression model that considered only LAeq values, multiple linear regressions can efficiently account for the different annoyance ratings of the two transformer noises at the same LAeq values.

Abstract:Wind turbines (WT) are a specific type of noise source, with unique characteristics, such as amplitude modulation (AM) and tonality, infrasonic and low frequency (LF) components. The present study investigates the influence of wind turbine infrasound and low frequency noise (LFN) on human well-being. In the between-subjects study design, 129 students performed a cognitive test evaluating attention and filled out questionnaires in three various exposure conditions, including background noise, synthesized LFN (reference noise) and registered WT infrasound (stimulus). No significant differences in test results or in the number of reported post-exposure feelings and ailments in various exposure conditions were found when analyzing them in males and females, separately. However, a significant association between pre-exposure well-being and reported post-exposure complaints was noted and explained by in-depth statistical analysis.
