Abstract:Zhao Qingchu, a Confucian physician from the Kuaiji area at the end of the Qing Dynasty, learned from famous physicians of the Shao Xing School on exogenous febirle disease (Shang Han) and the You's of the Shi Cai School, drawing from the knowledge of the both medical schools. He quickly became popular for being a physician after giving up his research of Confucianism. He had a wide physician-patient network because of his art of healing as many politicians and celebrities such like Shao Youlian, Zeng Guoquan, Ren Daorong, Xu Yingkui and Ren Fuchang,were his patients. He was taken as a typical example of being good at the medical communication among doctors and doctors-patients in the Yangtze River area in the late Qing Dynasty. For instance, he once had a variety of medical communication with famous physicians, such as Wang Yuezhen, Ma Peizhi, He Lianchen, Zhang Wanxiang, Ling Jialiu and Zhou Bodu. He investigated medical theories in terms of exogenous febirle disease (Shang Han) and integrated his thinking with various medical schools, even attempting to involving western medicine. He was also skilled in teaching his medical thinking to his disciples, such as Zhao Shuan, Yang Zhian, Lu Dongchuan and He Jiren. Zhao Qingchu compiled his medical understanding based on his practice and experiences throughout his life and published this knowledge in Cun Cun Zhai Yi Hua Gao. He had it published many times, leading to a profound influence in Shaoxing and the Jiangnan area at that time.

Abstract:Professor ZHANG Shan-chen's clinical experience and academic thoughts in the field of acupuncture are summarized. Professor ZHANG stresses on theoretical exploration and has written Zhenjiu Jiayijing Shuxue Chongji, published a series of articles on textual research and expounded the nomenclature of acupoints. He believes that clinical practice should be guided by theory and the comprehensive syndrome differentiation be emphasized. Hence, a holistic idea should be cultivated, in which, the human body is considered as an organic whole and should be adaptive to the nature. Based on the theory above, the diagnosis can be determined and the effective treatment be received. He suggests selecting few acupoints, identifying the deficiency from the excess so as to determine the reinforcing or replenishing method and exerting appropriate needling manipulation. Additionally, the response should be enhanced on the identification of deqi after needle insertion. Moreover, a great consideration is laid on the clinical trial and application of moxibustion, which is complemented with acupuncture technique each other and mutually conductive to the clinical effect.

Abstract:The Xu's Medical Family, from the Northern and Southern Dynasties, was called an official family with medical background by Fan Xingzhun. Its genealogy was traced back to the end of the Sui Dynasty and the beginning of the Tang Dynasty. Based on the local chronicles, epitaphs, history books and relevant medical historical artifacts, this paper explores the development of the Xu's Medical Family in the Yuan and the Ming Dynasties. Most of the Xu's family members were appointed as medical officials locally after Xue Yueweng in the Yuan Dynasty. Xu Shu, Xu Biao, Xu Wei and Xu Wenyuan were appointed as Medical Ambassadors and the judges of Tai Yi Hospital in the Ming Dynasty. Xu Wei was appointed as the Right Tong Zheng in charge of the Tai Yi Hospital affairs in the period of Jia Jing, and promoted to the Chief of Taipu Department in the period of Wan Li in the Ming Dynasty. He was the highest-ranking official in the Xu's Medical Family in the Yuan and Ming dynasties. The Xu's Medical Family were a family of both officials and doctors, to some extent, related to the Yi-Hu System in both the Yuan and the Ming Dynasties. Some of the Xu's family members still took a career as a doctor, but did not serve as medical officers from the Qing Dynasty. Some of the Xu's decendants went into official careers via the Imperial Examination, such as Xu Shifen, as Deputy Minister of Hubu in the Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:Cheng Lin, a famous doctor in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties, had a great reputation with his medical achievements. According to the prefaces and postscripts in a variety of books and local records, he was born earlier than 1616 and died later than 1700 in Huaitang in She Xian. He learned medicine from his uncle Cheng Jingtong when he was young. After that, he learned from the famous doctor Yu Chang. He visited Kaifeng, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Yangzhou, and made friends with many then celebrities, such as Zhou Lianggong, Lin Sihuan and You Tong. He left many medical writings, such as Yi Xia Zhi Yan, Jin Gui Yao Lue Zhi Jie and Sheng Ji Zong Lu Zuan Yao. He was also good at painting and seal cutting. His family, the Cheng's, in Huaitang in Xin'an, had many off-springs who became famous doctors, such as Cheng Jin, Cheng Jie, Cheng Yandao, and Cheng Yingmao, with their medical history continuing up to the present day.

Abstract:Wu Jinshou()[(1785-1795)-(1844-1851)]once wanted to take the imperial examination, but in late Qing Dynasty, under the depressed situation of economics and politics, he was trapped in countryside as many lower intellectuals, and chose medicine as another way to earn a living. In fact, he was both a doctor and a literatus. He kept friends with scholars, such as Zhang Tingji, Yao Wentian, Lu Changchun, Wei Guangfu, and scholar-physicians like Chen XIshu, Lu zeng and also Xu Jin's family, famous doctors at that time. He changed status Flexibly. To some extent, he represented the basic appearance of the traditional Chinese practitioner. In Daoguang 11 years(1831), Wu Jinshou published Medincal Cases Records of Three physicians(《》), Yi Xiao Mi Chuan(《》), Wen Re Zhui Yan(《》). This naturally have business purpose and was market-oriented. He had influenced on the spread of Wuzhong(the name of Suzhou and its surrounding area in Ming and Qing Dynasty) medical books, and provided some topics to the study of the Wenbing academic history.

Abstract:Shang Han Lun Xuan Zhu(«»,Annotation of Treatise on Febrile Diseases) is a representative work of Zang Yingzhan, a famous physician in Zhucheng of Shandong who was as famous as Huang Yuanyu during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty.The book was not published, but has been preserved only in manuscripts, of which 5 copies are now preserved.By comparing the five manuscripts seen, it is found that the Zhuang Enze version is unique in the existing version of this book, exquisite and generous, beautifully copied, with important documentary value. Zhuang Enze adopts the theories of various schools, supplements prescriptions, analyze medical theory with his unique insights.The reason may be related to his family's practice of medicine for generations, its philosophy of loving reading, copying books, and collecting books, and also related to its protection of local and state documents and the dissemination of lost culture.

Abstract:Hua Shou was a very famous physician at the turn of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties. In addition to his medical skills, his social communication was also very helpful to his fame. Under the tutorship of the Confucianist Han Shuo, and physicians such as Wang Jüzhong and Gao Dongyang in his early days, Hua Shou obtained two identities: Confucian scholar and doctor. The former helped Hua Shou get acceptance from literati group, meanwhile, Hua Shou's medical skill helped him deepen the communication among them. By means of his double identity, Hua Shou got acquaintance with many local and nation-wide scholars and politicians, including Zhao Lian, Chen Xingzhong, Wang Shuyu, Fang Guozhen, Song Xuanxi, Zhu You, Wang Xiyang, Song Lian, Liu Ji, through them Hua Shou's fame spread throughout the country. The whole set of"Lin xia"(Hermit identity) constructed by Ding Henian, Liu Renben and Dai Liang, help Hua Shou attain his bequeathed reputation.

Abstract:Master DOU Han-qing is one famous acupuncturist in the Jin and Yuan Dynasties of China. In consideration of his newly neatened works DOU Taishi Zhenjing (Master DOU's Canon of Acupuncture,《》), Zhenjiu Jicheng (Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion,《》) and Panshijin Zhici Michuan (Panshijin Secretly Bequeathed Techniques of Straight Needling,《》) which were not paid enough attention in the past, we make a systematic and comprehensive summary about his academic achievements in the present paper. There are six main aspects about Dou's academic achievements: blending the essence of sages' acupuncture theories and clinical experience, correcting predecessors' mistakes; innovating the needlingmethods; expanding the clinical applications of acupoints and paying attention to combination of meridian acupoints and extra-points in clinical practice; inheriting and developing acupuncture prescriptions in the Song Dynasty, creating new diagnostic and treatment modes; initiating needling techniques of various schools in the Ming Dynasty; and describing the contents of acupuncture and moxibustion in the form of odes. Moreover, we also put forward some of our enlightenments and considerations about DOU Han-qing's academic achievements.

Abstract:In Gao Ruone's epitaph written by Wen Yanbo, it was mentioned that Gao studied medicine because of his mother's diseases, reflecting his filial piety as a Confucianist. It was recorded that "more Yun people engaged in medical profession, especially proficient at treating cold damage diseases, and all followed Gao's theory" in Ye Mengde's Bi shu lu hua (Notes Taken When Spending The Summer Days) . In Gao Ruone's Biographyof History of Song Dynasty, the sentence was deduced as "famous doctors mostly coming from Weizhou, and all following Gao's theory" . Meanwhile, Gao Ruone was considered by Huang Tingjian as an important partin the transmission of medical knowledge after Huangdi, Qi Bo and Zhang Zhongjing. The reason was that Gao Ruone did revise and check Zhongjing's Shang han lun jue (Rhymes of Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases) , Sun Simiao's Fang shu (Prescriptions) and Wai tai mi yao (Arcane Essentials from the Imperial Library) to make them circulate, and known to the Song people. The changes in the descriptions of Gao Ruone illustrated the recognition by the Song people on the important role of medical text reading in the transmission of medical knowledge.

Abstract:Professor Ying-ao YU came from a family with medical background and studied under the guidance of Bo-wei QIN. He graduated from Shanghai Second Medical College. He also was a graduate of the first session of the Integrated Medicine in China. After that, he was assigned to the editorial office of the Academy of Chinese Medicine, engaging in the study of clinical literature of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM). With National Medical Master Zhi-zheng LU, he went to Baotou Steel Staff Hospital in Inner Mongolia to implement TCM training. He has devoted himself to research of TCM clinical literature and his clinical practice for more than 60 years. Based on this work, he developed his own clinical diagnosis and treatment model entitled Differentiation of Diseases, Differentiation of Symptoms and Signs-General Therapy-Treatment through Prescription-Treatment through Clinical Symptoms and Signs. This model makes an outstanding contribution to clinical TCM and clinical literature research. The author interviewed Professor YU systematically in terms of his experiences in TCM clinically and his cultural heritage in TCM clinical philology to share with readers.
[Textual research on the time of completion of XU Shuwei' books on exo-pathogenic cold diseases]

Abstract:Shang han bai zheng ge (Poets of Syndromes of Exo-pathogenic Cold Disease), Shang han fa wei lun (Discourse on Elucidation of Exo-pathogenic Cold Disease), Shang han jiu shi lun (90 Discourses on Exo-pathogenic Cold Disease) were the three extant books on exo-pathogenic cold disease written by Xu Shuwei among his other works of its kind. Although there were carved editions of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, these books were gradually paid attention for citations by other physicians till the Qing Dynasty. Through comparison of its texts, it can be found that the title of Shang han bai zheng ge was mentioned in his other medical works. While Shang han fa wei lun and Shang han jiu shi lun contained some overlapping contents, some even carrying concept contradictory to each other. According to historical materials, Xu Shuwei began to write the above-mentioned 3 books in the Northern Song Dynasty. In the several early years of the Southern Song Dynasty after crossing the Yangtze River, he collected the remained manuscripts and continued to write. Among them, Shang han bai zheng ge was completed first, followed by Shang han fa wei lun, with Shang han jiu shi lun came as the last.
