Abstract:Hua Shou was a very famous physician at the turn of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties. In addition to his medical skills, his social communication was also very helpful to his fame. Under the tutorship of the Confucianist Han Shuo, and physicians such as Wang Jüzhong and Gao Dongyang in his early days, Hua Shou obtained two identities: Confucian scholar and doctor. The former helped Hua Shou get acceptance from literati group, meanwhile, Hua Shou's medical skill helped him deepen the communication among them. By means of his double identity, Hua Shou got acquaintance with many local and nation-wide scholars and politicians, including Zhao Lian, Chen Xingzhong, Wang Shuyu, Fang Guozhen, Song Xuanxi, Zhu You, Wang Xiyang, Song Lian, Liu Ji, through them Hua Shou's fame spread throughout the country. The whole set of"Lin xia"(Hermit identity) constructed by Ding Henian, Liu Renben and Dai Liang, help Hua Shou attain his bequeathed reputation.

Abstract:Wu Jinshou()[(1785-1795)-(1844-1851)]once wanted to take the imperial examination, but in late Qing Dynasty, under the depressed situation of economics and politics, he was trapped in countryside as many lower intellectuals, and chose medicine as another way to earn a living. In fact, he was both a doctor and a literatus. He kept friends with scholars, such as Zhang Tingji, Yao Wentian, Lu Changchun, Wei Guangfu, and scholar-physicians like Chen XIshu, Lu zeng and also Xu Jin's family, famous doctors at that time. He changed status Flexibly. To some extent, he represented the basic appearance of the traditional Chinese practitioner. In Daoguang 11 years(1831), Wu Jinshou published Medincal Cases Records of Three physicians(《》), Yi Xiao Mi Chuan(《》), Wen Re Zhui Yan(《》). This naturally have business purpose and was market-oriented. He had influenced on the spread of Wuzhong(the name of Suzhou and its surrounding area in Ming and Qing Dynasty) medical books, and provided some topics to the study of the Wenbing academic history.

Abstract:In Gao Ruone's epitaph written by Wen Yanbo, it was mentioned that Gao studied medicine because of his mother's diseases, reflecting his filial piety as a Confucianist. It was recorded that "more Yun people engaged in medical profession, especially proficient at treating cold damage diseases, and all followed Gao's theory" in Ye Mengde's Bi shu lu hua (Notes Taken When Spending The Summer Days) . In Gao Ruone's Biographyof History of Song Dynasty, the sentence was deduced as "famous doctors mostly coming from Weizhou, and all following Gao's theory" . Meanwhile, Gao Ruone was considered by Huang Tingjian as an important partin the transmission of medical knowledge after Huangdi, Qi Bo and Zhang Zhongjing. The reason was that Gao Ruone did revise and check Zhongjing's Shang han lun jue (Rhymes of Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases) , Sun Simiao's Fang shu (Prescriptions) and Wai tai mi yao (Arcane Essentials from the Imperial Library) to make them circulate, and known to the Song people. The changes in the descriptions of Gao Ruone illustrated the recognition by the Song people on the important role of medical text reading in the transmission of medical knowledge.

Abstract:Microhydration effects upon the adenine-uracil (AU) base pair and its radical anion have been investigated by explicitly considering various structures of their mono- and dihydrates at the B3LYP/DZP++ level of theory. For the neutral AU base pair, 5 structures were found for the monohydrate and 14 structures for the dihydrate. In the lowest-energy structures of the neutral mono- and dihydrates, one and two water molecules bind to the AU base pair through a cyclic hydrogen bond via the N(9)-H and N(3) atoms of the adenine moiety, while the lowest-lying anionic mono- and dihydrates have a water molecule which is involved in noncyclic hydrogen bonding via the O4 atom of the uracil unit. Both the vertical detachment energy (VDE) and adiabatic electron affinity (AEA) of the AU base pair are predicted to increase upon hydration. While the VDE and AEA of the unhydrated AU pair are 0.96 and 0.40 eV, respectively, the corresponding predictions for the lowest-lying anionic dihydrates are 1.36 and 0.75 eV, respectively. Because uracil has a greater electron affinity than adenine, an excess electron attached to the AU base pair occupies the pi* orbital of the uracil moiety. When the uracil moiety participates in hydrogen bonding as a hydrogen bond acceptor (e.g., the N(6)-H(6a)...O(4) hydrogen bond between the adenine and uracil bases and the O(w)-H(w)...N and O(w)-H(w)...O hydrogen bonds between the AU pair and the water molecules), the transfer of the negative charge density from the uracil moiety to either the adenine or water molecules efficiently stabilizes the system. In addition, anionic structures which have C-H...O(w) contacts are energetically more favorable than those with N-H...O(w) hydrogen bonds, because the C-H...O(w) contacts do not allow the unfavorable electron density donation from the water to the uracil moiety. This delocalization effect makes the energetic ordering for the anionic hydrates very different from that for the corresponding neutrals.

Abstract:Shang Han Lun Xuan Zhu(«»,Annotation of Treatise on Febrile Diseases) is a representative work of Zang Yingzhan, a famous physician in Zhucheng of Shandong who was as famous as Huang Yuanyu during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty.The book was not published, but has been preserved only in manuscripts, of which 5 copies are now preserved.By comparing the five manuscripts seen, it is found that the Zhuang Enze version is unique in the existing version of this book, exquisite and generous, beautifully copied, with important documentary value. Zhuang Enze adopts the theories of various schools, supplements prescriptions, analyze medical theory with his unique insights.The reason may be related to his family's practice of medicine for generations, its philosophy of loving reading, copying books, and collecting books, and also related to its protection of local and state documents and the dissemination of lost culture.

Abstract:After the rising of the Yuan Dynasty by defeating the Jin and Southern Song Dynasties, there were huge influences on the life of the Confucian scholars. A large number of Confucian scholar practiced medicine actively or passively. They practiced medicine in order to live safely in war time; or turned into the officials, with only a few of them even became senior officials. Some Confucian scholars changed their household registration by using the medical profession, and improved the identity and status in the society. Some scholars were adherents of the Jin or Yuan Dynasties, and had to practice and hide their status secretly because there was no imperial examination at the early years of the Yuan Dynasty. A large amount of Confucian scholars did improve the overall academic level and quality of medicine at the end of Jin and early years of Yuan Dynasty, laying down a solid foundation for medical theory breakthrough and development.

He was a famous educationist at the turn of the Qing and Republican periods, and made important contributions to the education of TCM.

Abstract:To the Editor.— I was interested in the article "Assisted Ventilation for Patients With Cystic Fibrosis" (239:1851, 1978). My colleagues and I 1 have published data previously that support the authors' conclusions. We reviewed the diagnosis, management, and prognosis in 17 cases of infants with cystic fibrosis and severe respiratory distress who were admitted to the Children's Hospital Medical Center, Boston, between 1968 and 1972. There was a 60% mortality overall. Six of the 17 infants were treated with assisted ventilation, of whom only one survived. These figures are almost identical to those of the nine infants (from several cystic fibrosis centers) reviewed by Davis and di Sant'Agnese. Our subsequent experience with assisted ventilation has shown no improvement in the survival of these infants.

Abstract:Shang han bai zheng ge (Poets of Syndromes of Exo-pathogenic Cold Disease), Shang han fa wei lun (Discourse on Elucidation of Exo-pathogenic Cold Disease), Shang han jiu shi lun (90 Discourses on Exo-pathogenic Cold Disease) were the three extant books on exo-pathogenic cold disease written by Xu Shuwei among his other works of its kind. Although there were carved editions of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, these books were gradually paid attention for citations by other physicians till the Qing Dynasty. Through comparison of its texts, it can be found that the title of Shang han bai zheng ge was mentioned in his other medical works. While Shang han fa wei lun and Shang han jiu shi lun contained some overlapping contents, some even carrying concept contradictory to each other. According to historical materials, Xu Shuwei began to write the above-mentioned 3 books in the Northern Song Dynasty. In the several early years of the Southern Song Dynasty after crossing the Yangtze River, he collected the remained manuscripts and continued to write. Among them, Shang han bai zheng ge was completed first, followed by Shang han fa wei lun, with Shang han jiu shi lun came as the last.

Abstract:Reform thought was the mainstream of thoughts among the modern Wenzhou intellectual communities. It exerted great and profound influences on medical learning and activities, with medical education as the chief reform practice of Wenzhou intellectual communities in the late Qing Dynasty. Liji Hospital and Liji Medical School were the symbols of the reform. Chen Qiu was a thinker and doctor; Xu Dingchao was an officer and doctor; Chen Baoshan was a professionally educated physician; and Xu Yunzhi was a folk doctor inherited the experiences handed down from his family. The four representatives of Wenzhou medicine, though with different social backgrounds, and their purpose of studying medicine and experience of being a doctor different alike, their medical thoughts are naturally different, reflected the overall condition of Wenzhou medicine in the late Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:The original version and title of Zhong Jing Quan Shu referred to the collection of four books - Shang Han Lun, Zhu Jie Shang Han Lun, Shang Han Lei Zheng and Jin Gui Yao Lue Fang Lun, published by Zhao Kaimei in the Ming Dynasty. Then, Zhang Qingzi Shang Han Lun was written by Zhang Qingzi. After that, a Japanese scholar compiled a new collection based on Zhong Jing Quan Shu held in the Cabinet Library in Japan consisting of three books - Shang Han Lei Zheng, JinGui Yao Lue Fang Lun and Zhang Qingzi Shang Han Lun. The preface and content in this collection was adjusted for some practical purposes and was published in the second year of Manji in Japan (1659). This book, Zhang Qingzi Shang Han Lun was based on Shang Han Lun from the early and mid-Edo period of Japan. It was then returned to China in the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. It was soon republished by Deng in Chengdu, with Yun Qi Zhang Jue Lu and Shang Han Ming Li Lun, added as a collection of five books with the same name Zhang Zi Qing Shang Han Lun, being popular in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. This book was understood to be from Zhong Jing Quan Shu published by Zhao Kaimei during this period. These two books were distinguished from each other when Shang Han Lun published in the Song Dynasty, drew people's attention. However, Zhang Qingzi Shang Han Lun was still believed valuable for both clinical and literature studies.

Abstract:The Chuo Ban Chu of Shang Si Yuan in the Qing Dynasty was an institution for Mongolian physicians who provided bone injury diagnosis and treatment for the royal family. This paper reports on an examination of the archives at the First Historical Archives of China, where 171 relevant archives were obtained. Based on this data, the paper summarises and verifies the directories of 112 Mongolian physicians, the authenticity and inheritance of 26 of these physicians, and a brief biography of 16 of them in each period of the Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:"Wu shan qi e"(five symptoms with good prognosis and seven with poor prognosis)is a theory used to determine the prognosis of external diseases in traditional Chinese medicine which have been mentioned in many ancient Chinese medicine books and have been valued by external doctors throughout history. However, it has been rarely discussed in modern literature. The theory were first seen in the Taiping Shenghui Fang, and the idea was originated from Ni Shun in Lingshu Yuban."Wu shan qi e"have evolved into many variants through the exertion of medical practitioners throughout history. By reviewing medical books of previous dynasties, it was found that there are two main versions: the Taiping Shenghui Fang version and its derivative versions, and the Waike Zhengzong version and its derivative versions.

The description of Sibu Zonglu Yiyao Bian(, Four general catalogues medical editorial) was recorded in Daoguang's 16th year (1836) of Yanshan bookstore as "the edition of Qing Daoguang's 15th year Yiwei" ; in addition, Zhongguo Zhongyi Guji Zongmu(, Chinese traditional medicine ancient books general catalogue) was recorded in Daoguang's 16th year (1836) of Yanshan bookstore as "the Yanshan bookstore engraved edition in Qingdaoguang's 15th year Yiwei (1835)" , but they were both errors. The photocopy Tongzhi edition of Xuxiu Siku Quanshu was mistakenly entitled "edition of Qing Daoguang Lithography of Yanshan Bookstore Print" . The description of Shanghan Lun Ben Zhi in Zhongguo Zhongyi Guji Zongmu had the edition of Qing Daoguang's 9th year Jichou (1829) and the edition of Guangdong Dasheng pharmaceutical bureau of the Republic of China.

Abstract:Guan-bu-za-bu was a famous figure in academic circle living in Inner Mongolian and Beijing regions from Kangxi to Qianlong age of Qing dynasty. He mastered four languages, viz. Mongolian, Tibetan, Chinese and Manchurian, and had great achievements in Mongolian philology, historiology and made great contribution to Mongolian Medicine. His blockprinted Name of Tibet, Mongolian, Chinese Medicament and Prescription played an important role in the history of Mongol medicine. Especially the former book was even called the handbook of medical name because its name of Mongolian materia medica were written in Tibetan and Chinese. It was printed again and again and played a historical role for morn than 250 years since its publication.
