Abstract:Zhao Qingchu, a Confucian physician from the Kuaiji area at the end of the Qing Dynasty, learned from famous physicians of the Shao Xing School on exogenous febirle disease (Shang Han) and the You's of the Shi Cai School, drawing from the knowledge of the both medical schools. He quickly became popular for being a physician after giving up his research of Confucianism. He had a wide physician-patient network because of his art of healing as many politicians and celebrities such like Shao Youlian, Zeng Guoquan, Ren Daorong, Xu Yingkui and Ren Fuchang,were his patients. He was taken as a typical example of being good at the medical communication among doctors and doctors-patients in the Yangtze River area in the late Qing Dynasty. For instance, he once had a variety of medical communication with famous physicians, such as Wang Yuezhen, Ma Peizhi, He Lianchen, Zhang Wanxiang, Ling Jialiu and Zhou Bodu. He investigated medical theories in terms of exogenous febirle disease (Shang Han) and integrated his thinking with various medical schools, even attempting to involving western medicine. He was also skilled in teaching his medical thinking to his disciples, such as Zhao Shuan, Yang Zhian, Lu Dongchuan and He Jiren. Zhao Qingchu compiled his medical understanding based on his practice and experiences throughout his life and published this knowledge in Cun Cun Zhai Yi Hua Gao. He had it published many times, leading to a profound influence in Shaoxing and the Jiangnan area at that time.

Abstract:The compilation of "Manchu Anatomy" was based on the positive attitude of Emperor Kangxi towards science and technology, the activities of Jesuits in China, and the exchange of science and culture between China and the West. It integrates the visceral theory of traditional Chinese medicine and the anatomical knowledge of Western medicine, promoting mutual understanding and reference between the two medical systems. The completion of this book not only increased the popularity of Western medicine in China, but also promoted the development of courtly medical education. The Complete Record of "Manchu Anatomy" has become an important bridge for the exchange of science and culture between China and the West, and has enlightening significance for the study of scientific and cultural literacy and interdisciplinary thinking. At the same time, it also demonstrates the openness and inclusiveness of technology and culture in the early Qing Dynasty. However, the closure and conservatism of the Qing Dynasty also had a limiting effect on the widespread dissemination of this work, resulting in the academic theory of Western medicine not being widely applied in China during the early Qing Dynasty.

[On modern representatives of Wenzhou medicine and their reform thoughts]

Abstract:Reform thought was the mainstream of thoughts among the modern Wenzhou intellectual communities. It exerted great and profound influences on medical learning and activities, with medical education as the chief reform practice of Wenzhou intellectual communities in the late Qing Dynasty. Liji Hospital and Liji Medical School were the symbols of the reform. Chen Qiu was a thinker and doctor; Xu Dingchao was an officer and doctor; Chen Baoshan was a professionally educated physician; and Xu Yunzhi was a folk doctor inherited the experiences handed down from his family. The four representatives of Wenzhou medicine, though with different social backgrounds, and their purpose of studying medicine and experience of being a doctor different alike, their medical thoughts are naturally different, reflected the overall condition of Wenzhou medicine in the late Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:Professor ZHANG Shan-chen's clinical experience and academic thoughts in the field of acupuncture are summarized. Professor ZHANG stresses on theoretical exploration and has written Zhenjiu Jiayijing Shuxue Chongji, published a series of articles on textual research and expounded the nomenclature of acupoints. He believes that clinical practice should be guided by theory and the comprehensive syndrome differentiation be emphasized. Hence, a holistic idea should be cultivated, in which, the human body is considered as an organic whole and should be adaptive to the nature. Based on the theory above, the diagnosis can be determined and the effective treatment be received. He suggests selecting few acupoints, identifying the deficiency from the excess so as to determine the reinforcing or replenishing method and exerting appropriate needling manipulation. Additionally, the response should be enhanced on the identification of deqi after needle insertion. Moreover, a great consideration is laid on the clinical trial and application of moxibustion, which is complemented with acupuncture technique each other and mutually conductive to the clinical effect.

Abstract:Macao Newsprint, which was an important tool for Lin Zexu to get acquainted with foreign affairs, was the first translated newspaper in Chinese history. The translation and compilation of news information related to Western medicine in Macao Newsprint was an active attempt by Chinese people to open their eyes to Western medicine. The two pieces of news related to Western medicine in Macao Newsprint, which presented the medical ethics, medical skills and doctor-patient relationship in the Western medicine, are precious historical materials on the exchange of Chinese and Western medicine. The expressions in the two pieces of translated news in which the foreigners might have praised their own medicine had a certain influence on the medical views of the late Qing scholars represented by Lin Zexu, and thus had a positive impact on the dissemination of Western medicine in China.

Abstract:Objective:To discuss the influence and enlightenment of modern western medicine to medical development in Wenzhou.Methods:By perusing correlative ancient books and materials concerned,tracing history,studying church hospitals which were used for reference to the development of medicine and higher medical education in Wenzhou.Result:W.E.Soothill,who came from England,established the first Wenzhou hospital named DiLi Blyth Hospital which offered medical treatment,teaching,scientific research,management.This hospital is of great significance to medical development in Wenzhou.Conclusion:Church education is forerunner of medical education in Wenzhou.It plays a role in promoting development of medical and health care in Wenzhou.

Abstract:The medical and health care and services in China were highly developed in the period of the Republic of China, and the healthcare service system also improved. The staff and students in medical colleges or universities, as implementers and practitioners, left their indelible marks in this period. They undertook their historical mission and embraced their responsibility in the special period by popularising medical diagnosis and treatment, reforming public health, advertising knowledge about women, infants and children, supporting the needs for war and popularising academic research. They combined theories and practice, traditional education and wartime education and academic research and social service. These services and activities of medical faculty and students provided historical references for today's medical universities in terms of undertaking social missions and promoting the spirit of dedication.

Abstract:Huang Zongxi’s innovations in Confucian thought are almost responses to the major problems of the philosophical dialogue between Confucian scholars and missionaries.In terms of ontology,by learning from the ontological discussion of Western philosophy on God,he illustrated the ancient Chinese idea of God against Christianity’s personalization of God and tried to reconcile the conflict between the belief in God and the Confucian filial piety;in terms of theory of human nature and life philosophy,by learning from the methodology of Western philosophy,he proposed a new way of understanding universality and particularity and believed the souls of people with high ideals are immortal;in terms of epistemology,he made a comprehensive critique of the superstition of Xiang and Shu that hindered scientific development and the assumption in which a priori moral order is attached to the Nature,advocated that extension of knowledge lies in the investigation of things and put forth the pluralist academic view;in terms of the clash between Chinese and Western culture,he had both a distinct and firm stance of Chinese Culture Standard and a clear awareness.Huang Zongxi’s rational attitude should be fully approved since he enriched and developed Chinese philosophy by learning from Western philosophy.

Abstract:Guan Zi has substantial content and deep idea, being paid great attention among the various ancient schools of thought. After discussing the influence of its philosophical idea on TCM, it can be concluded that Guan Zi raised Yin Yan concept to a natural law earlier after Lao Zi first philosophized it. Meanwhile discussed the relationship between Yin and Yang systematically such as respecting Yang, Yang can control Yin, and relativity of Yin and Yang. It first setup Jing -Qi Theory, discussing materiality of the Nature and life from the sense of ontology. But it confused Jing Shen and Jing Qi, and could not weep the primitive color of Xing-Shen Monism. It emphasized on self-cultivation and embodied Xu (voidness), Yi (unity), Jing (tranquility) and Yin (cause) on preserving health.

Abstract:Three volumes of Shiyi Xinjian, written by Zan Yin of Tang Dynasty, contains the theories and prescriptions of food treatment in various branches, which have far-reaching influence on food treatment and clinical treatment. The book was written in the 9th century A. D. as a dietary therapy prescription. In the Northern Song Dynasty, the book of Shiyi Xinjian was still surviving. It has been cited in Taiping Shenghuifang: Shizhi, Yanglao Fengqinshu, Zhenglei Bencao(, Classified Materia Medica from Historical Classics for Emergency) and Shengji Zonglu: Shizhimen. After the Jingkang Incident, the book was rare, and even may have been lost. Until the Ming Dynasty, the book was completely disappeared in China. However, there are some Quotes in the book Zhenglei Bencao and other books, and the contents of this book are still often cited by later medical books. After that, the Japanese collected 211 prescriptions of Shiyi Xinjian from Euibangyoochui in Korea. Luo Zhenyu brought them back to China and published them in the Dongfang Xuehui in 1924, which made the Shiyi Xinjian appear in a separate volume in China for the first time since it was lost, which promoted the spread of the book in China. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, some of the scholars collected it again, which improved the content of the book.
[Wang Ji's theory of 'Ying-Wei deficiency and excess' and 'Renshen-Huangqi nourishment']

Abstract:WANG Ji, the famous doctor in the Ming dynasty, devoted all his life to writing books and had completed 14 books in his lifetime. He established the academic thought of Ying-Wei (Yingqi and Weiqi) deficiency and excess and Renshe-Huangqi which was that both have the function of nourishment. This had a positive influence on correcting some scholars' opinion in the Ming dynasty, which was if using bitter and cold herbs to nourish Yin, it usually damaged the Qi of spleen and stomach; and influence on formation of the Gubenpeiyuan School (consolidating Yuanqi to enhance body resistance). The formation of the thought was related to the background of some iatrogenic illness whereby Yang deficiency of spleen and stomach was caused by excess use of bitter and cold medicine. WANG Ji's academic thought was mainly refined from Ying-Wei theory in the Neijing, spleen-stomach theory of LI Dongyuan and excess of Yang and deficiency of Yin theory of ZHU Danxi, and was also influenced by the thought of other doctors at the same time.

Abstract:Highlights The ideas of Zhong (中) have profound cultural implications beyond the Chinese character of Zhong (中) in traditional Chinese culture. This study explores the philosophical significance of Zhong for education. This study is based on the textual research of the original meanings of Zhong, its wisdom, and explanations of Zhong philosophies in Chinese rites and music culture as well as various schools of thought, including Yi-ology, Confucianism, and Daoism. Zhong has significant influence on the ancient Chinese concept of education, and its views on the field of education coincide with many contemporary educational views. The Integration of Medicine and Confucianism in the Late Yuan Period: Focusing on Neo-Confucian Physician Zhu Zhenheng

Abstract:Zhu Zhenheng, the last generation and sole representative from Southern China among the four masters of Jin-Yuan medicine, synthesized the evolution of Chinese medicine from the Song to the Yuan dynasties, profoundly impacting East Asian medical history. Zhu, identified as a Neo-Confucian scholar, appears in the Scholarly Records of the Song-Yuan Dynasties and in 'the Biographies of Confucians' rather than 'the Biographies of Experts' in the Official History of the Yuan Dynasty. His close association with the Jinhua school of Daoxue is noteworthy. Zhu's career, as well as his medical theory and practice, exemplify the influence of Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism, which was a significant intellectual resource among the literati during the late Yuan period, on medicine. Zhu Zhenheng's model of a Confucian physician later became a paradigm in East Asia, as Neo-Confucianism gained mainstream acceptance among the literati. This paper offers a detailed exploration of the specific contexts of Zhu's social and intellectual networks as well as an examination of the characteristics of his medical theories and practices. It explores how Zhu's career and identity as a Neo-Confucian physician were shaped through the local and empire-wide networks of the Jinhua school of Neo-Confucianism within the broader context of the Mongol empire, a global power in the late Yuan period. The paper also examines in depth how Zhu's medical practices were influenced by Neo-Confucianism, and it investigates the real nature and significance of the integration of medicine and Neo-Confucianism, two distinctly different realms of knowledge. Zhu Zhenheng's medical theories were formed through concerns about jufang medicine and the active presentation of alternatives. A notable aspect of his integration of medicine and Confucianism was the adoption of Neo-Confucian terminologies, concepts, and philosophical and ethical theses, while ensuring that the unique and independent domain of medicine was not subordinated to abstract philosophical theories. This is especially evident through his active and effective use of medical cases. Unlike previous studies, this paper demonstrates that Zhu Zhenheng's integration of medicine and Neo-Confucianism was mostly a metalevel process, involving methodology and knowledge reproduction patterns, and was driven by a belief in the possibility of harmonizing with Daoxue's ultimate principle without undermining the autonomy of medical knowledge.
