Abstract:In this letter, we propose a broadband absorber with high efficiency by an atomic layer depositing nanometer iridium (Ir) film onto a porous anodic alumina (PAA) template. The average absorption is able to achieve as high as 93.4% from 400 to 1100 nm and the absorption efficiency can reach up to 96.8% for the improved structure of the quadrangular frustum pyramid array. Not only the hexagonal latticed structures of the PAA template but also many similar structures based on gratings or holes with the square latticed or other latticed mode can realize the broadband high absorption efficiency. The light absorbed within the Ir/Glass interface and the sidewalls of PAA by the light funneling effect both contribute to the broadband absorption with high efficiency. This absorber, described in this paper, can be manufactured with a low-cost and large-area manner and has potential applications in fields of light harvesting, imaging, etc.

Abstract:Nanoporous alumina sheets can inhibit the growth of the frost layer in a low-temperature environment, which has been widely used in air-conditioning heat exchangers. In this study, nanoporous alumina sheets with pore diameters of 30 nm, 100 nm, 200 nm, 300 nm, and 400 nm were prepared by using the anodic oxidation method with the conventional polished aluminum sheet as the reference. A comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the frosting mechanism has been proposed based on the contact angle, specific surface area, and fractal dimension. It was found that compared with the polished aluminum sheet, the nanoporous alumina sheets had good anti-frost properties. Due to its special interface effects, the porous alumina sheet with a 100 nm pore diameter had strong anti-frost performance under low temperatures and high humidity. In an environment with low surface temperature and high relative humidity, it is recommended to use hydrophilic aluminum fins with large specific areas and small fractal dimensions for the heat exchange fins of air source heat pump air conditioning systems.

Abstract:With the development of the aerospace industry, the close exploration of the Sun has become a human demand. However, close-range exploration means that the detection satellite needs to accept the test of high temperatures above 1400 °C, so a thermal protective coating is a necessary part of the detection satellite to isolate heat and reflected light. Al2O3 coating has the characteristics of high emissivity and low absorptivity, and it is the best choice for thermal protection coating. However, the coating is subjected to thermal cycles, including heating and cooling, as the satellite rotates around the Sun, which could result in a change in the structure and properties of the coating. Therefore, thermal shock experiments were carried out, and the influence of microstructure on the absorption rate of the Al2O3 coating was investigated. In this study, an Al2O3 coating was prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). The coating was subjected to a thermal shock (TS) test at 1400 °C using a self-made flame shock device, and coating samples under different thermal shock degrees were obtained. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to characterize the coating pores, and the effects of the coating pore size, aspect ratio (A/R) and cracks in the coating on the optical properties of the coating under different thermal shock degrees were analyzed. In order to clarify the influence of coating microstructure changes on the optical properties of the coating under different thermal shock degrees, not only relevant experiments were carried out, but also the solar reflectivity of Al2O3 coatings with different pore structures was analyzed by the finite element method using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD). The results show that increasing the porosity and aspect ratio of the pores can improve the partial solar absorption of the coating. It was also found that the transverse crack propagation improves the solar reflectance of the coating.

Abstract:Various types of nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide layers and their sealings were studied to enhance the thermal emissivity and hence improve the heat dissipation of aluminum alloy for energy application. Dissipating heat fluxes from the anodized aluminum surfaces were measured using a modified steady-state method and investigated with respect to the various nanoporous morphologies obtained with different anodizing conditions and sealing methods. Results show that the anodized nanoporous oxide layers significantly enhance the thermal emissivity and heat dissipation of aluminum alloy, compared to bare aluminum alloy, and such enhancement is further improved with sealings. A thicker nanoporous oxide layer anodized in oxalic acid results in higher thermal emissivity and better heat dissipation than that in sulfuric acid, showing a darker color which is attributed to the more irregular and disordered pore size and pattern of the nanoporous oxide layer. The nanoporous oxide layer with cold NiF2 or black sealing shows further enhancement in thermal emissivity and heat dissipation, demonstrating the highest enhancement in emissivity up to 0.906 in case of the nanoporous oxide layer anodized in oxalic acid with black sealing, which is seven times greater than that of bare aluminum. The nanoporous oxide layer with black sealing also results in the significant improvement of the cooling efficiency of a heat exchanger system of aluminum alloy by 36.4%, suggesting great energy saving for real energy application.

Abstract:Abstract Photovoltaic (PV) technology is considered one of the most effective and promising renewable sources of energy. The PV system’s efficiency strongly depends on its operating temperature, which acts as a defect to the electrical efficiency by increasing over 25 °C. In this work, a comparison was performed between three traditional polycrystalline solar panels simultaneously at the same time and under the same weather conditions. The electrical and thermal performances of the photovoltaic thermal (PVT) system integrated with a serpentine coil configured sheet with a plate thermal absorber setup are evaluated using water and aluminum oxide nanofluid. For higher mass flow rates and nanoparticle concentrations, an improvement in the PV modules short-circuit current ( I sc ) and open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) yield and electrical conversion efficiency is achieved. The enhancement in the PVT electrical conversion efficiency is 15.5%. For 0.05% volume concentration of Al 2 O 3 and flow rate of 0.07 kg/s, an enhancement of 22.83% of the temperature of PVT panels’ surface over the reference panel has been obtained. An uncooled PVT system reached a maximum panel temperature of 75.5 °C at noontime and obtained an average electrical efficiency of 12.156%. Water and nanofluid cooling reduce the panel temperature by 10.0 °C and 20.0 °C at noontime, respectively.

Abstract:Several chips of porous alumina films with different nanostructures and scales were prepared by using the method of anodic oxidation. An atomic force microscope (AFM) was employed to image the surfaces of alumina films, and the corresponding reflective spectra of them were acquired with a spectrometer. The experiments show that the alumina films with average pore diameters of 26 and 39 nm feature particular reflective spectra, each consisting of a periodic distribution of peaks and valleys within the wavelength range from 500 nm to 1000 nm. The density or the number of peaks and valleys was determined by the scales of nanostructures. The present paper discussed the relationship between the scale of nanostructures and the distribution of reflective spectra. Some satisfying explanations for them were presented.

Abstract:We propose and theoretically investigate an efficient solar light absorber based on a multilayer structure consisting of tungsten nanoparticle layers and SiO2 layers. According to our calculation, average absorbance over 94% is achieved in the wavelength range between 400 and 2500 nm for the proposed absorber. The excellent performance of the absorber can be attributed to the localized surface plasmon resonance as well as the Fabry-Perot resonance among the metal-dielectric-metal layers. We compare the absorbing efficiency of tungsten nanosphere absorber with absorbers consisting of the other metal nanoparticles and conclude that iron can be an alternative material for tungsten in solar energy systems for its excellent absorbing performance and the similar optical properties as tungsten. Besides, a flat multilayer absorber is designed for comparison, and it is also proved to have a good absorbing performance for solar light.

Abstract:With the development of the porous alumina(PA) fabrication technology, more and more scholars plough into the research of its properties, especially optical properties. Recently, we observed an interesting phenomenon that the PA templates processed by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) show color differences related to light path difference. Our work attempts to make the principle clear and to find an effective method to modulate the color of PA samples. This article describes the details of our experimental and theoretical results. We successfully prepared some PA templates with different pore-depth by controlling the time of anodization in oxalic acid solution. In order to enhance the reflectivity of air-PA interface, a layer of TiO2 film of 18 nm is coated with PVD technique, which makes PA templates display quite distinct colors with different hole-depth. By modelling and analyzing PA samples, we make the interpretation of this optical property by taking the PA sample with 150 nm pore-depth as an example, and then put forward a way to simulate sample's color within its hole-depth and material refraction-index. The results are in good agreement with our theoretical analysis, which proves the feasibility of our simulation mode.

Abstract:Thermal control coating is an important means of ensuring that a spacecraft remains operational at high temperatures. Due to limitations regarding preparation technology and material properties, the mechanical properties of the conventional thermal control coatings still need to be improved. To solve this problem, nanostructured alumina coatings (NCs) and conventional alumina coatings (CCs) were prepared using plasma-spraying technology. The microscopic morphology, phase structure, hardness, and thermal control properties (solar absorptance (αs) and emissivity (ε)) of the nanostructured alumina coatings were investigated and compared with those of conventional alumina coatings. The results show that the NC has a higher hardness value (1168.8 HV) and that its reflectivity exceeds 75% in the wavelength range of 446–1586 nm, while a high degree of emissivity of 0.863–0.87 is still maintained at 300–393 K. Furthermore, the results show that these highly reflective properties are related to the phase composition and internal micromorphology of the NC, whereby the solar absorption of the coating is reduced due to the increase in the alpha phase content (21.4%), the high porosity (5.21%) and the nanoparticles favoring the internal scattering. All these properties can improve the performance of this CC coating with low solar absorptance (αs) and high emissivity (ε).
ANALYSIS ON THE ANTIREFLECTION OF SILICON-NANOPARTICLE FILMS AT THE SURFACE OF SILICON SOLAR CELLS

Abstract:We have studied the possibility of enhancing the light absorption of silicon solar cells by forming porous silicon-nanoparticle (Si-NP) films at the solar cell surface. For both unencapsulated and encapsulated silicon solar cells, the size of Si NPs hardly affects the light transmission to the photo-current conversion area. The maximum light absorption enhancement is obtained when the porosity of Si-NP films is about 70%. After solar cell encapsulation the light absorption enhancement is weakened. We have also considered the effect of Si-NP films on the light absorption of silicon solar cells as the light incidence angle varies.

Abstract:In this work, two types of nanoporous alumina membranes were prepared and tested. Structural features of the samples obtained by using different acids were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). And further SEM-images were analyzed by different types of fractal dimension estimation methods. The transmission and scattering of accelerated He+ ions were studied in experiments on the ion irradiation of dielectric channels based on porous alumina. An ion accelerator was used as a source of the He+ beam with an energy of 1.7 MeV. Ion scattering was studied by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. Helium transition through nanoporous alumina at various angles between the normal to the sample and the beam direction were observed. It is shown that the porous structure of anodic aluminum oxide is excellent as a dielectric matrix of nanocapillaries. Owing to the small angle scattering, it allows for the transportation of the accelerated charged particles through the dielectric capillaries, and, as a result, the localization of high energy ion irradiation effects. Additionally, according to the transmission of UV–V is spectra, the energy gaps of samples obtained were calculated.

Abstract:In this work, AlxGa1−xAs nanostructures on a planar Si substrate are employed to achieve highly efficient light trapping with improved light absorption. In this context, cylindrical and conical nanostructures are shown to render themselves as better light absorption surfaces. The effects of the AlxGa1−xAs nanostructures geometrical parameters and the Al concentration (x%) on the optical characteristics of the proposed solar absorber (SA) are studied. The optical performance of the suggested SA is numerically simulated using three-dimensional finite difference time domain method. The reported absorber has a superior performance in terms of absorption and short circuit current density, compared to its counterparts in the literature. The SA with cylindrical and truncated cone nanostructures can offer a high short circuit current density of 31.28 and 33.20 mA/cm2, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract The use of a nanostructured aluminum substrate as the cathode for a perovskite photovoltaic device is described. This cathode consists of an aluminum substrate onto which a highly ordered array of aluminum oxide tubular pores was grown via anodization. The 1‐μm thick pores – arranged in a closed‐packed hexagonal pattern – were subsequently selectively etched at the bottom to remove the so‐called aluminum oxide barrier layer. The subsequent infiltration of the pores with the components of a methylammonium lead iodide perovskite solar cells, and the completion with a semi‐transparent anode, have shown to allow the establishment of an ohmic contact between the substrate itself and the components infiltrated into the Al 2 O 3 pores. Indeed, a clear rectifying behavior was observed on the full devices, as well as modest photovoltaic conversion efficiencies. This paper demonstrates that an ohmic contact can be established between the aluminum substrate from which nanoporous anodic alumina was grown, and that the pores can be used to compartmentalize the infill material down to the nanoscopic level.

Effect of pore size and porosity distribution on radiation absorption and thermal performance of porous solar energy absorber

Abstract:In this paper, experimental and numerical study were both conducted to investigate the effect of pore size and porosity distribution on radiation absorption and thermal performance of porous solar energy absorber. Ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) spectrophotometer was used to measure the transmittance of porous media to reflect its radiation absorption capabilities. Numerical model was established based on the assumption of thermal nonequilibrium condition as well as using P1 model to consider the radiation heat transfer. The UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer measurement showed that: (1) With smaller pore size, the spectral transmittance of the porous media would be lower and the solar radiation absorption would be better; (2) Among the materials with different pore size distributions, pore-size-decreased combo and pore-size-increased combo have almost equal absorption coefficient which are higher than that of uniform structure. Numerical simulation demonstrated that: (3) For materials with different pore size distributions, pore-size-decreased structure has the best radiation absorption due to its ability of maximizing the volumetric absorption effect, which is agreed with the UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer experimental results; (4) For materials with different porosity distributions, porosity-gradually-increased structure has the highest mean fluid/solid temperatures because it can utilize the enhanced convective/conductive heat transfer to improve the overall thermal performance of porous receiver; (5) Porous structure with pore-size-decreased distribution and porosity-gradually-increased distribution has the best thermal performance of which the mean temperatures of fluid/solid phases are the highest among all the studied cases.

Nanostructured Black Aluminum Prepared by Laser Direct Writing as a High-Performance Plasmonic Absorber for Photothermal/Electric Conversion

Abstract:Utilizing the abundant and renewable solar energy to address the global energy shortage and water scarcity is promising. Great effort has been devoted to photothermal conversion for its typically full-spectrum utilization and high efficiency. Here, the coral-like micro/nanostructure was fabricated on an aluminum sheet by a facile laser direct writing technology. The nanocluster and microscale branches of corals endowed this black aluminum with broad-band plasmonic absorption and rapid heat transfer from the light absorption region to substrate. The black aluminum achieved ultrahigh solar absorbance of over 92.6% (>95.1% in the visible range) and excellent light heating ability (>90.6 °C under 1.0 sun). With good photothermal properties, this plasmonic absorber was used in a state-of-the-art eight-layer membrane distillation system, producing a water yield of up to 2.40 kg m-2 h-1 and a high solar conversion efficiency of 166.5% under 1-sun irradiation. Photothermal electricity was also achieved based on this system with a thermoelectric generator, with a water yield of 0.89 kg m-2 h-1 and a maximum electrical power output of 7.21 μW cm-2 under 1.0 sun. Considering the excellent performance of the plasmon-enhanced black aluminum, this work provides an alternative and feasible route toward high-efficient utilization of the solar energy.

Abstract:In this paper, Ag@Al2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared through the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique with Al2O3 nano-layers serving as anti-corrosion encapsulants. Then, the core-shell structured nano-composites were dispersed into Therminol 66 (TH66) to form oil-based plasmonic nanofluids with mass concentrations varied from 0 to 0.04 wt%. The suspension stability, optical absorption properties and photo-thermal conversion performance of oil-based nanofluids were experimentally tested and evaluated. Besides, the finite difference time domain method was used to simulate the optical absorption of Ag@Al2O3 NPs with different core-shell sizes and volume concentrations. Results demonstrated that the optical absorption capability of oil-based plasmonic nanofluids was enhanced with increasing the nanomaterial concentration. At the approximate optimum concentration of 0.04 wt%, the temperature of plasmonic nanofluid could be increased up to 90.5 °C after an irradiation time of 45 min at the solar intensity of 920 W/m2. The deposition of Al2O3 layer can enhance the optical absorption by intensifying and broadening the absorbance spectras of Ag NPs accompanied by red-shift due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. This study provides a promising option to produce plasmonic Ag@Al2O3 nano-composites at large scale for applications in solar thermal energy harvesting.

Abstract:Solar selective absorption coatings based on anodic aluminum oxides (AAO) were prepared via an anodization technique and a subsequent alternating current electrodeposition of Cu-Ni nanoparticles at the bottom. The phase structure, microstructure and solar selective absorption properties of the AAO coatings were investigated with respect to their preparation conditions. Moreover, the dependence of the solar selective absorption properties on thermal annealing history was examined. One-dimensional AAO photonic crystal coatings were produced by anodization under period pulse voltages. The spectral positions of photonic bandgaps were estimated for the AAO photonic crystal coatings. The first-order photonic bandgap was verified to be located in the infrared region. The construction of the photonic crystal structure appreciably lowered the infrared emittance and as a result improved the overall properties of the AAO photonic crystal coatings. A small amount of CuAl2O4 was formed in the electrodeposition layer of AAO photonic crystal coatings by controlling the amplitude of applied electrodeposition voltage at 14 V. The formation of the CuAl2O4 minimized the oxidization of the Cu-Ni nanoparticles at elevated temperatures and thereby enhanced the thermal stability of the solar selective absorption properties. The AAO photonic crystal coating prepared under the electrodeposition voltage showed a solar absorptance of 0.90, an infrared emittance of 0.11 and a spectral selectivity of 8.12 at room temperature, while retaining a spectral selectivity of 6.47 after being annealed at 300 °C for 24 h.

Abstract:In recent years, solar absorbers had received widespread attention, however, many absorbers were difficult to achieve large‐scale preparation, and the raw materials are expensive. Halloysite (HNTs) and palygorskite (PAL) have the advantage of abundant reserves and low prices. In this paper, solar absorbers with bilayer and porous features were prepared from mixed clays of HNTs and PAL, further studies focused on the solar‐thermal conversion efficiency of the absorbers. The mixed clays were gelated by aqueous polymerization of acrylamide (AM) and N, N'‐methylene bisacrylamide (MBA), then the surface of the gel was carbonized to obtain the double‐layer solar absorbers (F‐HNTs/PAL). The F‐HNTs/PAL shows excellent thermal stability with a weight‐loss ratio of 13% at 1000 °C, good mechanical property with a compressed strength of up to 200 KPa at 80% strain, abundant porosity with an adsorption pore volume of 0.057 cm3 g‐1, and low thermal conductivity (0.206 W m−1 K−1). Under 1 sun illumination, the F‐HNTs/PAL has a higher vapor rate of 1.215 kg m−2 h−1 that equals 84% solar‐to‐vapor efficiency, which is much more than 57% of F‐HNTs prepared by the same methods, but the F‐HNTs/PAL shows unique thermal stability and mechanical property. Effect of plasmonic Aluminum nanoparticles shapes on optical absorption enhancement in silicon thin-film solar cells

Abstract:Scattering from metal nanoparticles near their localized plasmon resonance; especially, the resonances of noble metals which are mostly in the visible or infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum; is a way of improving light absorption in thin-film solar cells. The surface plasmon resonance can be affected by different factors such as the type, size, shape, and dielectric properties of the surrounding medium. Here we investigate, using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method, how different shapes of aluminum nanoparticles affect absorption enhancement in silicon thin-film solar cells. Our results show that using these particles more than 30% conversion efficiency for plasmonic solar cells can be achieved compared to a cell without particles. We have also found that although the spherical particles have the highest absorption peak, optimization of some parameters such as the height of the cylinder or disk-shaped particles and their distance from the substrate can increase the absorption. The results can provide more information and insight to understand and optimize plasmonic particles for solar cell applications.

Abstract:Gold nanospheres (Au NSs) and gold nanorods (Au NRs) are traditional noble metal plasmonic nanomaterials. Particularly, Au NRs with tunable longitudinal plasmon resonance from visible to the near infrared (NIR) range were suitable for high efficient photothermal applications due to extended light receiving range. In this work, we synthesized Au NRs and Au NSs of similar volume, and subsequently developed them into Au NR/PVDF and Au NS/PVDF nanofilm, both of which exhibited excellent solar photothermal performance evaluated by solar photothermal experiments. We found that Au NR/PVDF nanofilm showed higher solar photothermal performance than Au NS/PVDF nanofilm. Through detailed analysis, such as morphological characterization, optical measurement, and finite element method (FEM) modeling, we found that the plasmonic coupling effects inside the aggregated Au NRs nanoclusters contributed to the spectral blue-shifts and intensified photothermal performance. As compared to Au NS/PVDF nanofilms, Au NR/PVDF nanofilm exhibited higher efficient light-to-heat conversion rate, because of the extended light receiving range and high absorbance, as the result of strong plasmonic interactions inside nanoclusters, which was further validated by monochromatic laser photothermal experiments and FEM simulations. Our work proved that the Au NRs have huge potential for plasmonic solar photothermal applications, and are envisioned for novel plasmonic applications.
