Abstract:Active-sensing systems such as echolocation provide animals with distinct advantages in dark environments. For social animals, however, like many bat species, active sensing can present problems as well: when many individuals emit bio-sonar calls simultaneously, detecting and recognizing the faint echoes generated by one's own calls amid the general cacophony of the group becomes challenging. This problem is often termed 'jamming' and bats have been hypothesized to solve it by shifting the spectral content of their calls to decrease the overlap with the jamming signals. We tested bats' response in situations of extreme interference, mimicking a high density of bats. We played-back bat echolocation calls from multiple speakers, to jam flying Pipistrellus kuhlii bats, simulating a naturally occurring situation of many bats flying in proximity. We examined behavioural and echolocation parameters during search phase and target approach. Under severe interference, bats emitted calls of higher intensity and longer duration, and called more often. Slight spectral shifts were observed but they did not decrease the spectral overlap with jamming signals. We also found that pre-existing inter-individual spectral differences could allow self-call recognition. Results suggest that the bats' response aimed to increase the signal-to-noise ratio and not to avoid spectral overlap.

Abstract:The adenovirus type 5 E1A protein has been demonstrated to elicit antitumor effects through the induction of apoptosis, inhibition of cell cycle progression, induction of differentiated epithelial phenotypes, repression of oncogene expression and function, and sensitization to chemotherapeutic agents and radiation. These unique properties have led to use of the E1A gene in adenoviral and lipid-based gene therapy systems, and it has demonstrated antitumor effects in tumor xenograft model systems. However, the delivery systems used in those studies are best suited for local or intratumoral delivery rather than systemic delivery. Because the effective treatment of many primary tumors as well as metastatic disease requires systemic delivery systems, a novel gene delivery system composed of liposome/protamine/DNA (LPD) was investigated for systemic delivery of the E1A gene. Athymic nude mice bearing human breast (MDA-MB-361) or head and neck (WSUHN-31) tumor xenografts were treated i.v. with LPD-E1A, and the expression of E1A protein and effects on tumor growth were assessed. In the MDA-MB-361 breast model, expression of E1A protein was detected in the tumors after LPD-E1A treatment, which was associated with down-regulation of HER-2/neu protein expression and the presence of apoptotic cells. Tumor volume was also smaller in mice treated with LPD-E1A than in controls in both of the xenograft models. Lastly, LPD-E1A in combination with paclitaxel was more effective than LPD-E1A or paclitaxel alone in the MDA-MB-361 model. Additional preclinical and clinical development of LPD-E1A is warranted for the treatment of advanced or metastatic cancer.

Abstract:Animals living in a complex social environment emit diverse acoustic signals and thus serve as excellent subjects for understanding the evolution of acoustic communication. Previous studies have focused on the complexity of social calls in some group-living animals, yet the determinants of vocal complexity at the intraspecific level remain unclear. Here, we aimed to assess the influence of group composition on social call complexity in Himalayan leaf-nosed bats ( Hipposideros armiger ) in the non-breeding season. The bats divided into three groups with the same number of individuals but with different sex ratio compositions. We monitored social vocalizations for the all-male group, the all-female group, the mixed group, and also quantified vocal complexity for each group based on multiple acoustic metrics, including vocal repertoire, call sequences, the diversity index, and information capacity. The results showed that there were significant differences in the composition of call sequences among the three bat groups. The number of vocalizations was the highest in the mixed group, while the social call complexity was the highest in the all-male group, followed by the all-female group, and was the lowest in the mixed group. The results suggest that sex ratio potentially influence the vocal repertoire in Himalayan leaf-nosed bats. Our findings might provide a cue for vocalization research to investigate sex ratio in social groups as a potential driver for vocal complexity.

Abstract:The study of vocal communication in non-human animals can uncover the roots of human languages. Recent studies of language have focused on two linguistic laws: Zipf's law and the Menzerath-Altmann law. However, whether bats' social vocalizations follow these linguistic laws, especially Menzerath's law, has largely been unexplored. Here, we used Asian particolored bats, Vespertilio sinensis, to examine whether aggressive vocalizations conform to Zipf's and Menzerath's laws. Aggressive vocalizations of V. sinensis adhere to Zipf's law, with the most frequent syllables being the shortest in duration. There was a negative association between the syllable number within a call and the average syllable duration, in agreement with Menzerath's law. A decrease in the proportion of some long syllables and a decrease in the duration of several syllable types in long-duration calls explain the occurrence of this law. Our results indicate that a general compression principle organizes aspects of bat vocal communication systems.

Abstract:Vocalisations play a crucial role in the social systems of many animals, and may inadvertently reveal behavioural characteristics of the sender. Bats, the second largest mammalian order, rely extensively on vocalisations due to their nocturnal lifestyle and complex social systems, making them ideal for studying links between vocalisations and consistent behavioural traits. In this study, we developed a new testing regime to investigate if consistent individual vocalisation differences in nectarivorous bats are associated with specific behavioural types. We exposed 60 wild, male bats to novel and risky stressors, and assessed their behavioural and vocal responses. Proactive, exploratory, and bold bats were more likely to produce social calls, and among the vocalising bats, more agitated bats produced higher numbers of social calls. We thus show that bat vocalisation behaviour can be indicative of a certain behavioural type, potentially allowing conspecifics to assess personalities from a distance, which in turn could impact subsequent social interactions, group dynamics, and reproductive success. Our results, in combination with previous findings in birds, suggest that advertent or inadvertent long-distance broadcasting of personality may be widespread, thus opening up new exciting questions about the links between vocalisations and sociality.

Abstract:Noise is one of the main factors that can influence the processes of sound communication across a wide range of animal groups. Although the effects of ambient noise on animal communication, including anthropogenic noise, have received increasing attention, few studies have examined changes in the fine structure of acoustic signals produced by vocalizing species in constantly noisy environments. Here, we used natural recordings to determine the associations between stream noise and call parameters in the little torrent frog (Amolops torrentis). We also used playbacks of stream noise recorded in natural habitats and playbacks of white noise to examine how male vocal signals change with increasing noise levels. The results show that noise intensity has a significant effect on male call frequency, but not on call amplitude or other call characteristics. Based on this evidence, we suggest that in streamside species stream noise drives males to alter call frequency and call as loudly as possible in order to improve discriminability. These findings provide insights into the role played by ecological selection in the evolution of noise-dependent anuran vocal plasticity.

Abstract:Comparative studies of animal communication systems are particularly important for understanding the origins and evolution of core features of human language like syntax and dialects. Recent studies have begun to develop bats as models for investigating shared traits with human language, given the complex social vocalizations of the former. Our previous research revealed that bat social calls contained almost 20 syllable types and the occurrence of these syllable types in the call sequences followed certain permutation rules. However, the differences in these patterns between populations remain unclear. Here, we examined the syntactic patterns of social calls in greater horseshoe bats, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, from three geographically distant populations in China. The aggressive calls and behaviours during agonistic interactions of 26 bats were analysed to examine the consistency and variation between two aggression levels and across three populations. Common types of syllables, transitions and sequence patterns were found in all three populations. However, there were significant differences in the occurrence frequencies of shared syllable types, transition types and sequence types. Further, more noisy and composite syllables occurred when aggression was high than when it was low. There were also more transitions between noisy syllables and more repetitions in calls in a high aggression than in a low aggression context. The universal syntactic patterns and differences in social vocalizations of bats across different populations are of interest for fields of animal communication and language evolution.

Abstract:Echolocating bats can detect, localize, classify, pursue, and capture night-flying insects in less than a second. During pursuit, aerial hawking bats dynamically change their emitted calls as they approach prey, increasing call rate, reducing call duration, increasing bandwidth, and reducing source level. Additionally, many bat species dynamically control the shape of the emitted echolocation beam by broadening the beam in close proximity to prey. However, the acoustic scene, as experienced by the bats, depends as much on the characteristics of the emitted call as on the shape and orientation of the outer ears. We show that aerial-hawking bats also dynamically modify the shape and orientation of the outer ear in synchrony with changes to the emitted beam during prey pursuit. We believe that it is the combination of all these dynamic changes, both to the emitted call and to the receiving morphology, that underlie the effectiveness with which bats navigate and forage in the night sky.

The analysis is based on the velocity model, which is characterized by motion at a constant velocity with interruptions where sojourn times are chosen randomly but according to power-law distributions. The velocity model reproduces excellently the map-generated motion. The relationship to L\'evy walks and scaling properties is discussed.

Abstract:Many animals vary their acoustic signals with weather conditions to ensure sufficient range of signal transmission as atmospheric attenuation increases (the atmospheric attenuation change hypothesis). However, few studies have considered the effects of weather conditions on the vocalizations of endotherms via the effects on their physiological condition (the physiological change hypothesis). In the present study, we directly linked weather conditions to changes in bats' body temperatures and to their echolocation call frequencies. We found a significantly positive correlation between body temperatures and call frequencies among individuals of the great leaf-nosed bat, Hipposideros armiger, in the wild. We then monitored changes in body temperature and call frequency of H. armiger over an hour at an ambient temperature of about 11 °C. The bats emitted echolocation calls of lower frequencies with decreasing body temperature caused by decreased ambient temperature, supporting the physiological change hypothesis. We also investigated changes in body temperature and echolocation call frequencies for H. armiger from summer to winter. The bats' body temperatures decreased with decreasing ambient temperature. However, echolocation call frequencies increased significantly. A linear mixed-effects model suggested that the change in atmospheric attenuation rather than body temperature had a significant effect on the call frequency, supporting the atmospheric attenuation change hypothesis. Overall, our results suggested that weather conditions can affect the echolocation signals of bats via the effects on their body temperature and on atmospheric attenuation. When both effects coexist, weather-induced adjustments in the echolocation signals could be more likely to be driven by the atmospheric attenuation effect.

Abstract:Whereas echolocation in horseshoe bats is well studied, virtually nothing is known about characteristics and function of their communication calls. Therefore, the communication calls produced by a group of captive adult greater horseshoe bats were recorded during various social interactions in a free-flight facility. Analysis revealed that this species exhibited an amazingly rich repertoire of vocalizations varying in numerous spectrotemporal aspects. Calls were classified into 17 syllable types (ten simple syllables and seven composites). Syllables were combined into six types of simple phrases and four combination phrases. The majority of syllables had durations of more than 100 ms with multiple harmonics and fundamental frequencies usually above 20 kHz, although some of them were also audible to humans. Preliminary behavioral observations indicated that many calls were emitted during direct interaction with and in response to social calls from conspecifics without requiring physical contact. Some echolocation-like vocalizations also appeared to clearly serve a communication role. These results not only shed light upon a so far widely neglected aspect of horseshoe bat vocalizations, but also provide the basis for future studies on the neural control of the production of communicative vocalizations in contrast to the production of echolocation pulse sequences.

Abstract:We test the relationship between airport noise and foraging behavior in wild bats. The airport noise disturbs foraging activities of bats. Echolocation pulse parameters of bats are predicted by noise level and aircraft activity. The expansion of anthropogenic noise poses an emerging threat to the survival and reproductive success of various organisms. Previous investigations have focused on the detrimental effects of anthropogenic noise on the foraging behavior in some terrestrial and aquatic animals. Nevertheless, the role of airport noise in impairing foraging activities of most wild animals has been neglected. Here, we aimed to assess whether foraging behavior in free‐living Japanese pipistrelle bats (Pipistrellus abramus) can be disturbed by airport noise. We used audio recording to monitor foraging activities of bats at 11 sites around the runway of a municipal airport. We quantified noise level and spectra, aircraft activity, habitat type, nightly temperature, wind speed, and moon phase for each site. The analysis revealed that noise level and aircraft activity were significant negative predictors for the number of bat passes and feeding buzzes around the runway, even after controlling for the effects of other environmental factors. There was no marked spectral overlap between bat echolocation pulses and airport noise in the presence and absence of low‐flying aircraft. The spectro‐temporal parameters of echolocation vocalizations emitted by bats were dependent on noise level, aircraft activity, and habitat type. These results provide correlative evidence that airport noise can reduce foraging activities of wild pipistrelle bats. Our findings add to the current knowledge of adverse impacts of airport noise on foraging bats in artificial ecosystems and provide a basis for further research on the mechanisms behind noise pollution near airports.

Abstract:Although self-organized behavior has been extensively studied in the movement of group-behaving animals, such as fish or birds, far less attention has been paid to vocal behavior in animal groups, especially in mammals. Here, by testing the vocal response of echolocating bats (Miniopterus fuliginosus) to the playback of jamming stimuli in the lab, we discovered a mathematical model that can well describe vocal frequency control by bats in response to jamming stimuli mimicking echolocation sounds emitted in a group of bats. We then extended the model to a group of flying bats and observed frequency-adjusting behavior by which the frequency differences for the group increased overall, similar to a previous observation on group-flying bats. Further, we showed the frequency-adjusting behavior led to less potential misdetections by echolocation in a group. Our findings suggest this frequency-adjusting behavior is a self-organized vocal behavior that mitigates conflicts within a group, one achieved via simple behavioral rules, as in other types of collective animal behavior.

Doppler-shift Compensation Behavior in Horseshoe Bats Revisited: Auditory Feedback Controls Both a Decrease and an Increase in Call Frequency.

Abstract:Among mammals, echolocation in bats illustrates the vital role of proper audio-vocal feedback control particularly well. Bats adjust the temporal, spectral and intensity parameters of their echolocation calls depending on the characteristics of the returning echo signal. The mechanism of audio-vocal integration in both mammals and birds is, however, still largely unknown. Here, we present behavioral evidence suggesting a novel audio-vocal control mechanism in echolocating horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum). These bats compensate for even subtle frequency shifts in the echo caused by flight-induced Doppler effects by adjusting the frequency of their echolocation calls. Under natural conditions, when approaching background targets, the bats usually encounter only positive Doppler shifts. Hence, we commonly believed that, during this Doppler-shift compensation behavior, horseshoe bats use auditory feedback to compensate only for these increases in echo frequency (=positive shifts) by actively lowering their call frequency below the resting frequency (the call frequency emitted when not flying and not experiencing Doppler shifts). Re-investigation of the Doppler-shift compensation behavior, however, shows that decreasing echo frequencies (=negative shifts) are involved as well: auditory feedback from frequencies below the resting frequency, when presented at similar suprathreshold intensity levels as higher echo frequencies, cause the bat's call frequency to increase above the resting frequency. However, compensation for negative shifts is less complete than for positive shifts (22% versus 95%), probably because of biomechanical restrictions in the larynx of bats. Therefore, Doppler-shift compensation behavior involves a quite different neural substrate and audio-vocal control mechanism from those previously assumed. The behavioral results are no longer consistent with solely inhibitory feedback originating from frequencies above the resting frequency. Instead, we propose that auditory feedback follows an antagonistic push/pull principle, with inhibitory feedback lowering and excitatory feedback increasing call frequencies. While the behavioral significance of an active compensation for echo frequencies below RF remains unclear, these behavioral results are crucial for determining the neural implementation of audio-vocal feedback control in horseshoe bats and possibly in mammals in general.

Abstract:Exposure to intense noise can damage cochlear hair cells, leading to hearing loss in mammals. To avoid this constraint, most mammals have evolved in relatively quiet environments. Echolocating bats, however, are naturally exposed to continuous intense sounds from their own and neighboring sonar emissions for maintaining sonar directionality and range. Here, we propose the presence of intense noise resistance in cochlear hair cells of echolocating bats against noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). To test this hypothesis, we performed noise exposure experiments for laboratory mice, one nonecholocating bat species, and five echolocating bat species. Contrary to nonecholocating fruit bats and mice, the hearing and the cochlear hair cells of echolocating bats remained unimpaired after continuous intense noise exposure. The comparative analyses of cochleae transcriptomic data showed that several genes protecting cochlear hair cells from intense sounds were overexpressed in echolocating bats. Particularly, the experimental examinations revealed that ISL1 overexpression significantly improved the survival of cochlear hair cells. Our findings support the existence of protective effects in cochlear hair cells of echolocating bats against intense noises, which provides new insight into understanding the relationship between cochlear hair cells and intense noises, and preventing or ameliorating NIHL in mammals.

Noise constrains heterospecific eavesdropping more than conspecific reception of alarm calls

Abstract:Many vertebrates eavesdrop on alarm calls of other species, as well as responding to their own species' calls, but eavesdropping on heterospecific alarm calls might be harder than conspecific reception when environmental conditions make perception or recognition of calls difficult. This could occur because individuals lack hearing specializations for heterospecific calls, have less familiarity with them, or require more details of call structure to identify calls they have learned to recognize. We used a field playback experiment to provide a direct test of whether noise, as an environmental perceptual challenge, reduces response to heterospecific compared to conspecific alarm calls. We broadcast superb fairy-wren ( Malurus cyaneus ) and white-browed scrubwren ( Sericornis frontalis ) flee alarm calls to each species with or without simultaneous broadcast of ambient noise. Using two species allows isolation of the challenge of heterospecific eavesdropping independently of any effect of call structure on acoustic masking. As predicted, birds were less likely to flee to heterospecific than conspecific alarm calls during noise. We conclude that eavesdropping was harder in noise, which means that noise could disrupt information on danger in natural eavesdropping webs and so compromise survival. This is particularly significant in a world with increasing anthropogenic noise.

Abstract:AbstractHydropower infrastructure represents a major driver of habitat loss and insular fragmentation worldwide, mostly across the tropics and sub‐tropics. Despite growing evidence of dam‐induced impacts on biodiversity, the effects of insular habitat fragmentation on species assemblages remain poorly understood, particularly for East Asian vertebrates. Here, we assess how insectivorous bats respond to forest fragmentation in Thousand Island Lake, a mega‐hydroelectric dam in East China. Bat assemblages were surveyed across 36 land‐bridge islands of different sizes and degrees of isolation, using AudioMoth recorders. Echolocation calls were classified into sonotypes, each corresponding to either single or multiple species, which were further classified according to their habitat affinities into forest or open‐space foragers. Based on 22 875 five‐min recordings from 108 detector‐nights, we recorded 15 bat sonotypes, eight of which we classified as forest sonotypes (2329 bat passes) and seven as open‐space sonotypes (52 277 bat passes). Overall, sonotype richness increased with island area, but only above a certain threshold (34 ha). Habitat affinity played an important role in ensemble‐level responses to fragmentation; forest sonotype richness increased with island area, whereas open‐space sonotype activity was higher in more isolated islands. Our results highlight the relevance of particularly large fragments (>1000 ha) to maintain area‐sensitive forest bat species. However, islands below 34 ha in size and those more isolated from the mainland are also of conservation value as they, correspondingly, harbour a variable (but substantial) number of species and concentrate higher activity of open‐space foragers. These findings further demonstrate that acoustic sampling methods, as the one presented here, are able to provide key information for evidence‐based policies aimed at halting the ongoing wave of dam‐induced biodiversity loss.
