Abstract:Urban noise can potentially disturb the acoustic signals of animals inhabiting urban areas. Although a wide variety of noises from different sources is common in cities, the impact of non-engine noise on animal calls is less studied. In a natural experiment, we evaluated the effect of different urban noises on the advertisement calls of urban frogs ( Eleutherodactylus nitidus ) in the metropolitan area of Puebla, Mexico. We recorded and analyzed 672 advertisement calls from 28 male frogs and the corresponding environmental noises from three distinct localities. Our analysis focused on four acoustic properties of the calls: inter-call interval, call duration, dominant frequency, and call amplitude. To standardize the amplitude measurements of sound pressure levels produced by noise and frog calls, we employed a practical approach using a reference signal for calibration. We treated the longitudinal data of different noises occurring before, during, and after advertisement calls as repeated measures within the urban locations. During our samplings, frogs called amidst spontaneous urban noises, including dog barking, fireworks, and vehicle engine sounds. Our results indicate that vehicle engine sounds and dog barking do not cause significant distortions in the calls of these urban frogs. However, we observed slight variations in the dominant frequency of calls, decreasing by 11 Hz, during and after fireworks. Given the observed plasticity of E. nitidus in response to noise, urban noises may not pose a severe problem for this urban frog.

Abstract:Research on urban noises affecting acoustic communication of animals is a growing area of study and conservation concern. However, the consequences of aircraft noise on anuran acoustic communication have been explored on a restricted basis to date. In this study, we investigated the impact of aircraft overflights on the individual and chorus performance of acoustic signalling in the Pedregal frog ( Eleutherodactylus grandis ), a microendemic and threatened species from Mexico City. During the summer of 2021, we recorded acoustic signals from male individuals and conducted acoustic monitoring to analyse how chorus social interactions change due to aircraft overflights. For this purpose, we evaluated acoustic properties of the call, including call duration, dominant frequency, call amplitude, and call repetition rate. Additionally, we measured the amplitude of environmental noises and signals by means of two types of complementary methodological approaches. Our results show changes in the individual performance of acoustic signals with longer call duration, lower dominant frequency, and higher call amplitude due to aircraft overflights, while individual call repetition rate did not vary. Furthermore, a decrease in the number of calls within the chorus was observed during aircraft overflight. Overall, these results show that aircraft noise causes plastic changes in the acoustic signals of the Pedregal frog and that social interactions between conspecifics decrease, thus adding a new disturbance to this species that already suffers from other anthropogenic noises, and habitat fragmentation.

Abstract:Noise is one of the main factors that can influence the processes of sound communication across a wide range of animal groups. Although the effects of ambient noise on animal communication, including anthropogenic noise, have received increasing attention, few studies have examined changes in the fine structure of acoustic signals produced by vocalizing species in constantly noisy environments. Here, we used natural recordings to determine the associations between stream noise and call parameters in the little torrent frog (<i>Amolops torrentis</i>). We also used playbacks of stream noise recorded in natural habitats and playbacks of white noise to examine how male vocal signals change with increasing noise levels. The results show that noise intensity has a significant effect on male call frequency, but not on call amplitude or other call characteristics. Based on this evidence, we suggest that in streamside species stream noise drives males to alter call frequency and call as loudly as possible in order to improve discriminability. These findings provide insights into the role played by ecological selection in the evolution of noise-dependent anuran vocal plasticity.

Abstract:Frogs on public display altered their vocalizations in the face of anthropogenic noise from aquarium visitors. Anuran behavior and reproduction are dominated by vocalizations, rendering them vulnerable to the effects of signal masking. For anurans on display in zoos and aquaria, a major source of ambient noise is visitors, which pose a unique source of potential anthropogenic signal masking. Call characteristics (total call duration, and minimum and maximum call frequencies) of three populations of dendrobatids (Dendrobates leucomelas, Epipedobates tricolor, and Ranitomeya imitator) on public display were investigated at time periods of increasing visitor‐related noise (closed, off‐peak, and peak aquarium visiting hours) to determine if there were changes in call characteristics that correlated with changes in visitor noise levels. The data revealed that call length increased with more visitor noise for D. leucomelas and E. tricolor, with their longest calls during peak hours, and all three species had their shortest calls during closed hours. Both minimum and maximum call frequencies increased with more visitor noise for E. tricolor and R. imitator, with their highest frequencies during peak hours, and lowest frequencies during closed hours. This study found evidence that anurans on public display adjust their vocalizations in the presence of visitor noise. These findings support expanded monitoring of ambient noise for animals on public display to determine if noise poses significant effects that might influence well‐being or reproduction.

Abstract:Loss of acoustic habitat due to anthropogenic noise is a key environmental stressor for vocal amphibian species, a taxonomic group that is experiencing global population declines. The Pacific chorus frog (Pseudacris regilla) is the most common vocal species of the Pacific Northwest and can occupy human-dominated habitat types, including agricultural and urban wetlands. This species is exposed to anthropogenic noise, which can interfere with vocalizations during the breeding season. We hypothesized that Pacific chorus frogs would alter the spatial and temporal structure of their breeding vocalizations in response to road noise, a widespread anthropogenic stressor. We compared Pacific chorus frog call structure and ambient road noise levels along a gradient of road noise exposures in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, USA. We used both passive acoustic monitoring and directional recordings to determine source level (i.e., amplitude or volume), dominant frequency (i.e., pitch), call duration, and call rate of individual frogs and to quantify ambient road noise levels. Pacific chorus frogs were unable to change their vocalizations to compensate for road noise. A model of the active space and time ("spatiotemporal communication") over which a Pacific chorus frog vocalization could be heard revealed that in high-noise habitats, spatiotemporal communication was drastically reduced for an individual. This may have implications for the reproductive success of this species, which relies on specific call repertoires to portray relative fitness and attract mates. Using the acoustic call parameters defined by this study (frequency, source level, call rate, and call duration), we developed a simplified model of acoustic communication space-time for this species. This model can be used in combination with models that determine the insertion loss for various acoustic barriers to define the impact of anthropogenic noise on the radius of communication in threatened species. Additionally, this model can be applied to other vocal taxonomic groups provided the necessary acoustic parameters are determined, including the frequency parameters and perception thresholds. Reduction in acoustic habitat by anthropogenic noise may emerge as a compounding environmental stressor for an already sensitive taxonomic group.

Abstract:Anthropogenic disturbance, including noise, is a major cause of biodiversity decline worldwide. Especially in anurans, the effect of noise pollution is known to have major consequences on their reproduction since acoustic communication is an essential part of this process. In this study, we tested the effect of three levels of traffic noise (55 dB, 65 dB, and 75 dB) corresponding to three different distances from the road (200, 100, and 50 m, respectively) on the Brazilian Mundo Novo treefrog ( Boana marginata ). The results of the playback experiments showed an effect on call type B. More specifically, there was a decrease in the advertisement call rate, a reduction in the number of pulses, and a lengthening of the interval between pulses, particularly at 65 dB. These findings suggest that at distances of up to 100 m, the masking effect significantly influences acoustic communication on the species. However, a 55 dB stimulus—equal to 200 m from the road edge—did not change the call in this species, suggesting a minimal distance to implement noise-inflicting infrastructures. We recommend that new studies adopt sampling methods from this distance to refine the threshold of the traffic noise effect.

Abstract:Abstract Vocalization is the main form of communication in many animals, including frogs, which commonly emit advertisement calls to attract females and maintain spacing. In noisy environments such as streams, mechanisms to maximize signaling efficiency may include vocal plasticity and/or movement of individuals to quieter sections, but which strategy is used is still uncertain. We investigated the influence of stream geophony on the advertisement call of the torrent frog Hylodes perere in the Atlantic Rainforest, in southeastern Brazil. In a mark-recapture study, we tested if males remain in their territories and thus adjust their advertisement calls to maximize their communication. We ran linear mixed models to verify the relationship of call parameters and stream geophony, body size, and environmental temperature. We found that males remained in the same location across time, increased call intensity in noisier environments, but did not reduce call effort. Males also increased the dominant frequency in these situations, suggesting a modulation in this parameter. Our results indicate that territoriality is an important factor for males to increase call intensity to surpass stream noise instead of repositioning along the stream. However, because call effort was maintained, we suggest that sexual selection is crucial in this system, favoring males that better detect others and adjust their call efficiency. This is the first study to evaluate simultaneously frog movements and adaptations to geophony, which contributes to the investigation of the concomitant environmental and sexual selective pressures in species that communicate in noisy environments.

Abstract:The presence of constant abiotic noise near streams may have affected the evolution of spectral components of anuran calls without affecting, at least to the same extent, the evolution of the temporal components. We tested this hypothesis using a phylogenetic signal approach in two clades of Neotropical frogs whose calling and breeding behaviour is associated to streams (genus Hyloscirtus, and Centrolenidae) and in one clade associated to ponds (Phyllomedusinae). Our results suggest that abiotic noise on streams can shape the evolution of call traits in anurans. However, its effect can differ between components of the calls and between clades. In this way, noise on streams can be one of several factors promoting an uncoupled evolutionary pattern between temporal and spectral components of the anuran calls and the high diversity of call structures in anurans. The use of high‐pitched auditory signals by species communicating alongside noisy streams has been often considered an adaptation, yet studies testing this hypothesis have yielded inconclusive results. The major challenge has been to quantify the proportion of across‐species signal variation that could be attributed to either common history (phylogenetic load) or adaptation. We further advance in this approach by comparing the phylogenetic load between different components of anuran calls. Because stream noise allegedly represents a stronger selective pressure for call frequency than for call temporal traits, we predicted a weaker phylogenetic signal in call frequency, particularly in the taxa that breed alongside streams. We first built a phylogenetic hypothesis using four mitochondrial genes on each of three clades: the genus Hyloscirtus and the family Centrolenidae, which call alongside streams and the subfamily Phyllomedusinae, known to call at lentic water bodies. In parallel, we compiled data on the advertisement calls of 154 species and used them to calculate Blomberg's K values as a proxy for the phylogenetic load (signal) of the call traits. The phylogenetic signal was weaker in spectral than in temporal call traits within the Hyloscirtus calls and weak or absent in both spectral and temporal components of Phyllomedusine calls. Against our expectations, the phylogenetic signal was strong in call frequency, but absent in call temporal components of the centrolenid calls. Our results support uncoupled evolution between spectral and temporal components of anuran calls. They also indicate that the selective role of abiotic noise varies among taxa and that other factors must be invoked to fully understand among‐species variation in advertisement calls.

Abstract:We studied variation and repeatability of Batrachyla taeniata calls under controlled conditions to evaluate: (i) the extent of variation in call properties within and among days, (ii) the extent of variation in repeatability of call properties, and (iii) differences in repeatability among call properties. Variation of acoustic properties differed within and across days of recording. Repeatability of the properties analyzed increases within days. Overall repeatability is larger, intermediate, and lower for dominant frequency, call rate, and call duration, respectively. Estimating repeatability allows a first approximation that may indicate a potential response to selection of sexual traits. Acoustic sexual signals comprise spectral and temporal variables, where the former generally have lower intra‐individual variation and higher repeatability values. Studies of repeatability in anurans have been conducted mainly in natural conditions, but the stability of laboratory settings allows extended recording intervals, favoring measurement accuracy. We conducted a study of variation and repeatability of the calls of males of Batrachyla taeniata, a frog from the South American temperate forest to evaluate under homogeneous environmental and social conditions: (i) the extent of variation in acoustic properties of calls within and among days, (ii) the extent of temporal variation in the repeatability of call properties, and (iii) differences in repeatability among call variables. Variation of acoustic properties differed within and across days of recording, call rate generally increased within and throughout days, suggesting sensitization processes. Call duration decreased during these time spans, yielding constant calling effort. In contrast, the dominant frequency decreased within days but increased across days. Overall repeatability differs significantly among variables: dominant frequency, call rate, and call duration having the highest, intermediate, and lowest values, respectively. The high repeatability of call rate relative to call duration contrasts with an opposing general tendency in previous studies in anurans. The repeatability of the three variables analyzed increases within days, and the repeatability of call rate also increases throughout days, highlighting the relevance of this variable for individual identity over different time ranges.

Abstract:Anthropogenic noise and its effects on acoustic communication have received considerable attention in recent decades. Yet, the natural acoustic environment's influence on communication and its role in shaping acoustic signals remains unclear. We used large-scale playbacks of ocean surf in coastal areas and whitewater river noise in riparian areas to investigate how natural sounds influences song structure in six songbird species. We recorded individuals defending territories in a variety of acoustic conditions across 19 study sites in California and 18 sites in Idaho. Acoustic characteristics across the sites included naturally quiet 'control' sites, 'positive control' sites that were adjacent to the ocean or a whitewater river and thus were naturally noisy, 'phantom' playback sites that were exposed to continuous broadcast of low-frequency ocean surf or whitewater noise, and 'shifted' playback sites with continuous broadcast of ocean surf or whitewater noise shifted up in frequency. We predicted that spectral and temporal song structure would generally correlate with background sound amplitude and that signal features would differ across site types based on the spectral profile of the acoustic environment. We found that the ways in which song structure varied with background acoustics were quite variable from species to species. For instance, in Idaho both the frequency bandwidth and duration of lazuli bunting (Passerina amoena) and song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) songs decreased with elevated background noise, but these song features were unrelated to background noise in the warbling vireo (Vireo gilvus), which tended to increase both the minimum and maximum frequency of songs with background noise amplitude. In California, the bandwidth of the trill of white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) song decreased with background noise amplitude, matching results of previous studies involving both natural and anthropogenic noise. In contrast, wrentit (Chamaea fasciata) song bandwidth was positively related to the amplitude of background noise. Although responses were quite heterogeneous, song features of all six species varied with amplitude and/or frequency of background noise. Collectively, these results provide strong evidence that natural soundscapes have long influenced vocal behavior. More broadly, the evolved behavioral responses to the long-standing challenges presented by natural sources of noise likely explain the many responses observed for species communicating in difficult signal conditions presented by human-made noise.

Abstract:The vocal behavior of Neotropical birds has received less attention compared to birds in Northern temperate regions. Many bird species rely on acoustic communication to establish and maintain territories and to interact with conspecifics. For this reason, the growing threat of noise pollution in their habitats is a cause for concern. Birds perform behavioral adjustments when confronted with atypical environmental situations (e.g. urban noises, artificial light, human voice or vegetation loss). The aim of this study was to investigate vocal adjustments of Masked Gnatcatcher (Polioptila dumicola) males in environments located near a route with varying level of traffic noise (measured in decibels) and differing percentage of cover vegetation. Linear mixed models (LMMs) were used to analyze the effects of both environmental parameters in P. dumicola song. Results reveal that P. dumicola increases the amplitude of its songs in response to higher levels of traffic noise. Cover vegetation did not show any effect on song parameters. The model with the highest significance demonstrates a positive linear relationship between amplitude and traffic noise. These findings underscore the importance of studying communication alterations in noisy environments and understanding the ecological consequences of such effects on bird populations.

Abstract:Sexual communication often takes place in networks with multiple competing signalers being simultaneously assessed by mate choosers. Altered sensory conditions, such as noise and light pollution, can affect communication by altering signal production and perception. While evidence of sensory pollution affecting sexual signaling is widespread, few studies assess impacts on sexual signaling during rival interactions as well as mate choice, let alone whether urban and forest populations have diverged in their response. Here, we investigate the effects of urban sensory conditions on sexual communication in urban and forest túngara frogs ( ). We recorded dyadic vocal rival interactions and assessed mate choice with and without noise and light pollution in the lab. We show that urban sensory conditions can directly impact the intensity of rival interactions, differences between rivals and mate choice, though changes were often in opposite directions for frogs of urban and forest origins. Moreover, we demonstrate that changes in rival interactions in response to light and noise pollution can also indirectly affect how females choose between potential mates. Our study reveals origin-dependent direct and indirect effects of noise and light pollution, which ultimately translate into fitness consequences for sexual communication in urban populations.

Abstract:AIMS The aim was to analyse the characteristics of, and validate, a new instrument in Italian, 'Scale for the measurement of attitudes towards alcohol'. The instrument is a means for assessing young people's risk profile regarding the use of alcohol and identifying the factors that contribute to determining this attitude. METHODS The test was initially composed of 60 items divided into three domains and administered to a sample of 41 subjects. The results revealed the necessity of adapting the test's conceptual structure: consequently, the items were reduced to 35, divided into five domains. This second version was administered to a sample of 467 students attending upper secondary schools and vocational training schools in the municipality of Siena. Following this second experiment, a third version was realized, which comprised 25 items divided into the same five domains; it was administered to 100 subjects, with an equal number of males and females and an age range of 14-30 years. Analysis of the data obtained resulted in a final structure formed of 15 items in three domains. RESULTS The final structure of the test has good psychometric properties in terms of both reliability and validity. CONCLUSIONS The 'Scale for the measurement of attitudes towards alcohol' can be seen as an instrument for evaluating the factors capable of conditioning the behaviour of people between 18 and 26 years of age towards alcoholic substances.
Consistency in responses to conspecific advertisement calls with various signal-to-noise ratios in both sexes of the Anhui tree frog

Abstract:Abstract Environmental noise has a significant negative impact on acoustic communication in most situations, as it influences the production, transmission, and reception of acoustic signals. However, how animals respond to conspecific sounds when there is interference from environmental noise, and whether males and females display convergent behavioral responses in the face of noise masking remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of conspecific male advertisement calls with different signal-to-noise ratios on male–male competition and female choice in the Anhui tree frog Rhacophorus zhoukaiyae using playback and phonotaxis experiments, respectively. The results showed that (1) female Anhui tree frogs preferentially selected the conspecific calls with higher SNR compared to calls with lower SNR; (2) males preferentially responded vocally to the conspecific calls with higher SNR compared to calls with lower SNR; and (3) males’ competitive strategies were flexible in the face of noise interference. These results suggest that preferences of both sexes converge in outcome, and that male competitive strategies may depend on predictable female preferences. This study will provide an important basis for further research on decision-making in animals.

Abstract:Pied tamarins (Saguinus bicolor) increase call occurrence but not the number of calls in response to anthropogenic noise. The number of calls is mainly affected by the distance from the border of their home ranges and time of the day, while call syllable repetition rate diminishes in response to anthropogenic noise. Many animal species depend on sound to communicate with conspecifics. However, human‐generated (anthropogenic) noise may mask acoustic signals and so disrupt behavior. Animals may use various strategies to circumvent this, including shifts in the timing of vocal activity and changes to the acoustic parameters of their calls. We tested whether pied tamarins (Saguinus bicolor) adjust their vocal behavior in response to city noise. We predicted that both the probability of occurrence and the number of long calls would increase in response to anthropogenic noise and that pied tamarins would temporally shift their vocal activity to avoid noisier periods. At a finer scale, we anticipated that the temporal parameters of tamarin calls (e.g., call duration and syllable repetition rate) would increase with noise amplitude. We collected information on the acoustic environment and the emission of long calls in nine wild pied tamarin groups in Manaus, Brazil. We found that the probability of long‐call occurrence increased with higher levels of anthropogenic noise, though the number of long calls did not. The number of long calls was related to the time of day and the distance from home range borders—a proxy for the distance to neighboring groups. Neither long‐call occurrence nor call rate was related to noise levels at different times of day. We found that pied tamarins decreased their syllable repetition rate in response to anthropogenic noise. Long calls are important for group cohesion and intergroup communication. Thus, it is possible that the tamarins emit one long call with lower syllable repetition, which might facilitate signal reception. The occurrence and quantity of pied tamarin' long calls, as well as their acoustic proprieties, seem to be governed by anthropogenic noise, time of the day, and social mechanisms such as proximity to neighboring groups.

Abstract:The annual onset of breeding activity by animals in seasonal environments is often accompanied by auditory signals such as stridulations in insects and vocalizations in birds, mammals, and anurans. In ectotherms, the seasonal timing of such activity by males signals to females the general favorability of environmental conditions for reproduction. Complementary to this, the acoustic characteristics of male auditory signals are presumed to indicate, primarily, the status or quality of males as mates or territorial competitors. Here, using male anurans as a case study, we present the novel hypothesis that characteristics of auditory signals that are modulated by temperature may also serve as bioclimatic indicators of the suitability of proximal abiotic conditions for reproduction by females. According to this hypothesis, thermal constraints on characteristics such as call rate and duration that are insuperable by males may imbue their calls with features that facilitate tracking of environmental conditions by females independently of information intended for communication by males. We integrate findings from empirical studies spanning multiple fields of ecology and evolution to demonstrate how temporal variation in call properties may directly influence female reproductive behavior and physiology. Finally, we outline how this proposed mechanism may enable environmental tracking, provide guidelines for future research to experimentally test this hypothesis, and discuss how findings from this research can translate into actionable conservation management for species of concern.

Abstract:Geographic variation in acoustic characteristics of anuran advertisement calls could be an important indicator of species divergence due to its importance for species recognition. In this study, we evaluated the hypotheses of morphological by-product, local adaptation, and genetic drift to explain the geographic variation of the calls of the frog Eleutherodactylus nitidus . We compared six acoustic variables using ANOVA and linear discriminant analyses, as well as inter- and intra-population and intra-individual variation estimates to understand E. nitidus call variation. Recorded calls were corrected for temperature and body size to rule out the influence of these factors on call variation. The advertisement call of E. nitidus is a short whistle with an oscillating amplitude modulation that forms pulses. In total, we analysed 1676 advertisement calls from 66 individuals. We find that call duration, call amplitude, dominant frequency, pulses per call and highest pulse differ between populations, and such differences were independent of body size and temperature variation, ruling out the morphological by-product and local adaptation hypotheses. Additionally, the linear discriminant analysis indicates that geographic call variation depends principally on call amplitude. We suggest that the geographic distance between populations of E. nitidus yields genetic differences that account for differences in advertisement calls.

Abstract:In many bird species, nestling begging signals play a key role in the interaction between parents and their offspring during development. The information conveyed by begging calls can be disrupted by anthropogenic noise, which is one of the major threats to biodiversity in increasingly urbanized landscapes. Here, we describe the developmental change in acoustic structure of begging calls in nestling Eurasian Blue Tits Cyanistes caeruleus; begging calls are pure‐tone, low‐frequency, soft calls during the first days of development and gradually turn into white‐noise, hiss‐like, powerful calls of broadband frequency. This strong developmental variation highlights the importance of an extended sampling scheme in developmental studies. Furthermore, we pinpoint two phases where begging calls could be most vulnerable to masking by anthropogenic noise. First, during early development, begging calls are very soft and low‐pitched, closer to high‐intensity noise bands of traffic noise. Secondly, around day 11, begging calls show reduced tonality, which implies higher degradation, and relatively low amplitude, which implies reduced signal range. We encourage future research to describe acoustic development of begging calls in other species, to provide a robust foundation that will make noise mitigation policies more effective.

Abstract:Many animals rely on vocal communication for mating advertisement, territorial displays, and warning calls. Advertisement calls are species‐specific, serve as a premating isolation mechanism, and reinforce species boundaries. Nevertheless, there is a great deal of interspecific variability of advertisement calls. Quantifying the variability of calls among individuals within a species and across species is critical to understand call evolution and species boundaries, and may build a foundation for further research in animal communication. However, collecting a large volume of advertisement call recordings across a large geographic area has traditionally posed a logistical barrier. We used data from the continental‐scale citizen science project FrogID to investigate the spatial and temporal patterns of call characteristics in six Australian frog species. We found intraspecific call variability in both call duration and peak frequency across species. Using resampling methods, we show that variability in call duration and peak frequency was related to the number of individuals recorded, the geographic area encompassed by those individuals, and the intra‐annual time difference between those recordings. We conclude that in order to accurately understand frog advertisement call variation, or "anuran accents," the number of individuals in a sample must be numerous (N ≥ 20), encompass a large geographic area relative to a species' range, and be collected throughout a species' calling season.
