Abstract:Worldwide urban expansion and deforestation have caused a rapid decline of non-human primates in recent decades. Yet, little is known to what extent these animals can tolerate anthropogenic noise arising from roadway traffic and human presence in their habitat. We studied six family groups of titis residing at increasing distances from a busy highway, in a park promoting ecotourism near Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. We mapped group movements, sampled the titis' behavior, collected fecal samples from each study group and conducted experiments in which we used a mannequin simulating a human intrusion in their home range. We hypothesized that groups of titi monkeys exposed to higher levels of anthropogenic noise and human presence would react weakly to the mannequin and show higher concentrations of fecal cortisol compared with groups in least perturbed areas. Sound pressure measurements and systematic monitoring of soundscape inside the titis' home ranges confirmed the presence of a noise gradient, best characterized by the root-mean-square (RMS) and median amplitude (M) acoustic indices; importantly, both anthropogenic noise and human presence co-varied. Study groups resided in small, overlapping home ranges and they spent most of their time resting and preferentially used the lower forest stratum for traveling and the higher levels for foraging. Focal sampling analysis revealed that the time spent moving by adult pairs was inversely correlated with noise, the behavioral change occurring within a gradient of minimum sound pressures ranging from 44 dB(A) to 52 dB(A). Validated enzyme-immunoassays of fecal samples however detected surprisingly low cortisol concentrations, unrelated to the changes observed in the RMS and M indices. Finally, titis' response to the mannequin varied according to our expectation, with alarm calling being greater in distant groups relative to highway. Our study thus indicates reduced alarm calling through habituation to human presence and suggests a titis' resilience to anthropogenic noise with little evidence of physiological stress.

Abstract:Habitat loss due to deforestation is a primary threat to global biodiversity. Clearing tropical rainforests for agriculture or development leads to forest fragmentation. Forest fragments contain fewer large trees and provide lower food availability for primates compared to continuous forests. Mantled howler monkeys ( Alouatta palliata ) inhabit fragmented rainforests and may need to alter their activity budgets and spatial cohesion to mitigate competition and conserve energy in fragments where food quality is lower. We compared howler monkey activity and spatial cohesion across a small forest fragment (La Suerte Biological Research Station, LSBRS) and a large, continuous forest (La Selva Research Station) in Costa Rica. We predicted that monkeys at LSBRS would rest more, feed more, travel less, and be less spatially cohesive compared to La Selva to contend with fewer resources in the small fragment. Using instantaneous scan sampling at 2-min intervals during 30-min focal samples, we recorded activity and the number of individuals within 5 m of the focal animal. We collected 1505 h of data from 2017–2024. Monkey activity and spatial cohesion differed significantly across sites. As predicted, monkeys at LSBRS spent more time feeding than at La Selva, but contrary to our predictions, they rested less and traveled more. The mean number of individuals within 5 m was significantly lower at LSBRS compared to La Selva. The ability to modify their activity and spatial cohesion in response to fragmentation provides insight into how primates can contend with fewer resources and higher competition in changing ecosystems worldwide.

Abstract:Anthropogenic (man-made) noise constitutes a novel and widespread pollutant which is increasing in prevalence in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, resulting in alterations of natural soundscapes. There is proliferating evidence that noise leads to maladaptive behaviour in wildlife, yet few studies have addressed the effect on mammalian parent–offspring interactions. We investigated the impact of road noise on dwarf mongoose ( Helogale parvula ) offspring nearest-neighbour decision-making while foraging, using a field-based playback experiment. We predicted that offspring would forage closer to groupmates, especially adult and dominant individuals, when experiencing road noise compared with ambient sound to reduce communication masking and alleviate stress. We also predicted that noise would have a reduced effect with increasing offspring age owing to reduced reliance on adult groupmates for provisioning and predator defence. However, we found that mean nearest-neighbour distance and nearest-neighbour intrinsic characteristics (age, sex and dominance status) did not differ significantly between sound treatments, and these responses did not vary significantly with focal individual age. Noise may not impact nearest-neighbour decision-making owing to habituation from chronic natural exposure; alternatively, noise could induce stress and distraction, resulting in maladaptive decision-making. Future work should aim to detangle the underlying mechanisms mediating parent–offspring interactions in conditions of anthropogenic noise.

Mantled howler monkey males assess their rivals through formant spacing of long-distance calls

Abstract:Formant frequency spacing of long-distance vocalizations is allometrically related to body size and could represent an honest signal of fighting potential. There is, however, only limited evidence that primates use formant spacing to assess the competitive potential of rivals during interactions with extragroup males, a risky context. We hypothesized that if formant spacing of long-distance calls is inversely related to the fighting potential of male mantled howler monkeys ( Alouatta palliata ), then males should: (1) be more likely and (2) faster to display vocal responses to calling rivals; (3) be more likely and (4) faster to approach calling rivals; and have higher fecal (5) glucocorticoid and (6) testosterone metabolite concentrations in response to rivals calling at intermediate and high formant spacing than to those with low formant spacing. We studied the behavioral responses of 11 adult males to playback experiments of long-distance calls from unknown individuals with low (i.e., emulating large individuals), intermediate, and high (i.e., small individuals) formant spacing ( n = 36 experiments). We assayed fecal glucocorticoid and testosterone metabolite concentrations ( n = 174). Playbacks always elicited vocal responses, but males responded quicker to intermediate than to low formant spacing playbacks. Low formant spacing calls were less likely to elicit approaches whereas high formant spacing calls resulted in quicker approaches. Males showed stronger hormonal responses to low than to both intermediate and high formant spacing calls. It is possible that males do not escalate conflicts with rivals with low formant spacing calls if these are perceived as large, and against whom winning probabilities should decrease and confrontation costs increase; but are willing to escalate conflicts with rivals of high formant spacing. Formant spacing may therefore be an important signal for rival assessment in this species.

Abstract:The vocal behavior of Neotropical birds has received less attention compared to birds in Northern temperate regions. Many bird species rely on acoustic communication to establish and maintain territories and to interact with conspecifics. For this reason, the growing threat of noise pollution in their habitats is a cause for concern. Birds perform behavioral adjustments when confronted with atypical environmental situations (e.g. urban noises, artificial light, human voice or vegetation loss). The aim of this study was to investigate vocal adjustments of Masked Gnatcatcher (Polioptila dumicola) males in environments located near a route with varying level of traffic noise (measured in decibels) and differing percentage of cover vegetation. Linear mixed models (LMMs) were used to analyze the effects of both environmental parameters in P. dumicola song. Results reveal that P. dumicola increases the amplitude of its songs in response to higher levels of traffic noise. Cover vegetation did not show any effect on song parameters. The model with the highest significance demonstrates a positive linear relationship between amplitude and traffic noise. These findings underscore the importance of studying communication alterations in noisy environments and understanding the ecological consequences of such effects on bird populations.

Abstract:Wild animals are increasingly subjected to noisier environments as the scale and scope of human activities, such as development and resource extraction, encroach into their habitats. Anthropogenic noise alters the behaviour and vocalisations of wild animals including primates, yet our understanding of how noise affects small apes is limited. The large population of endangered northern yellow‐cheeked crested gibbons (Nomascus annamensis) inhabiting Veun Sai‐Siem Pang National Park (VSSP), in northeastern Cambodia, is frequently exposed to noise produced from illegal selective logging activities within the park. To determine the impacts of chainsaw noise on the gibbons' activity budgets and calling probability, we collected behavioural data on the only habituated gibbon group in VSSP during two consecutive dry seasons between 2017 and 2019. Our analyses of scan and focal‐animal samples revealed that when chainsaws were active, the group rested more and scanned less. The gibbons called more on mornings when there was no chainsaw activity; however, the trend was non‐significant. These findings suggest that despite long‐term exposure, chainsaw noise variably impacts important aspects of gibbon behaviour.

Abstract:Pied tamarins (Saguinus bicolor) increase call occurrence but not the number of calls in response to anthropogenic noise. The number of calls is mainly affected by the distance from the border of their home ranges and time of the day, while call syllable repetition rate diminishes in response to anthropogenic noise. Many animal species depend on sound to communicate with conspecifics. However, human‐generated (anthropogenic) noise may mask acoustic signals and so disrupt behavior. Animals may use various strategies to circumvent this, including shifts in the timing of vocal activity and changes to the acoustic parameters of their calls. We tested whether pied tamarins (Saguinus bicolor) adjust their vocal behavior in response to city noise. We predicted that both the probability of occurrence and the number of long calls would increase in response to anthropogenic noise and that pied tamarins would temporally shift their vocal activity to avoid noisier periods. At a finer scale, we anticipated that the temporal parameters of tamarin calls (e.g., call duration and syllable repetition rate) would increase with noise amplitude. We collected information on the acoustic environment and the emission of long calls in nine wild pied tamarin groups in Manaus, Brazil. We found that the probability of long‐call occurrence increased with higher levels of anthropogenic noise, though the number of long calls did not. The number of long calls was related to the time of day and the distance from home range borders—a proxy for the distance to neighboring groups. Neither long‐call occurrence nor call rate was related to noise levels at different times of day. We found that pied tamarins decreased their syllable repetition rate in response to anthropogenic noise. Long calls are important for group cohesion and intergroup communication. Thus, it is possible that the tamarins emit one long call with lower syllable repetition, which might facilitate signal reception. The occurrence and quantity of pied tamarin' long calls, as well as their acoustic proprieties, seem to be governed by anthropogenic noise, time of the day, and social mechanisms such as proximity to neighboring groups.

Abstract:Anthropogenic noise and its effects on acoustic communication have received considerable attention in recent decades. Yet, the natural acoustic environment's influence on communication and its role in shaping acoustic signals remains unclear. We used large-scale playbacks of ocean surf in coastal areas and whitewater river noise in riparian areas to investigate how natural sounds influences song structure in six songbird species. We recorded individuals defending territories in a variety of acoustic conditions across 19 study sites in California and 18 sites in Idaho. Acoustic characteristics across the sites included naturally quiet 'control' sites, 'positive control' sites that were adjacent to the ocean or a whitewater river and thus were naturally noisy, 'phantom' playback sites that were exposed to continuous broadcast of low-frequency ocean surf or whitewater noise, and 'shifted' playback sites with continuous broadcast of ocean surf or whitewater noise shifted up in frequency. We predicted that spectral and temporal song structure would generally correlate with background sound amplitude and that signal features would differ across site types based on the spectral profile of the acoustic environment. We found that the ways in which song structure varied with background acoustics were quite variable from species to species. For instance, in Idaho both the frequency bandwidth and duration of lazuli bunting (Passerina amoena) and song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) songs decreased with elevated background noise, but these song features were unrelated to background noise in the warbling vireo (Vireo gilvus), which tended to increase both the minimum and maximum frequency of songs with background noise amplitude. In California, the bandwidth of the trill of white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) song decreased with background noise amplitude, matching results of previous studies involving both natural and anthropogenic noise. In contrast, wrentit (Chamaea fasciata) song bandwidth was positively related to the amplitude of background noise. Although responses were quite heterogeneous, song features of all six species varied with amplitude and/or frequency of background noise. Collectively, these results provide strong evidence that natural soundscapes have long influenced vocal behavior. More broadly, the evolved behavioral responses to the long-standing challenges presented by natural sources of noise likely explain the many responses observed for species communicating in difficult signal conditions presented by human-made noise.

Abstract:Dead mantled howler monkeys in Comalcalco, Tabasco, Mexico. In May and June 2024, a die‐off of Mexican mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata mexicana) occurred in southern Mexico. This commentary documents the event, attributing it to extreme heatwaves, drought, wildfires, and habitat impoverishment. Despite their reported resilience to habitat disturbances, mantled howler monkey mortality rate in some areas reached 31%. Key evidence points to heatstroke as the primary cause of death, exacerbated by limited hydration and reduced dietary diversity in disturbed habitats. Immediate responses included community‐led rescues (e.g., hydrating the monkeys), coordination of rescue activities by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) (e.g., managing donations), involvement of scientists (e.g., monitoring of primate populations), and assistance from government officials (e.g., providing legal support for animal management). This event underscores the urgency of developing action plans to prevent and attend future crises. Among other actions, we highlight (i) establishing primate care infrastructure with medical and rehabilitation centers; (ii) developing protocols and training programs to ensure rapid crisis response; (iii) fostering collaboration among government, NGOs, and academic institutions for effective crisis management; and (iv) developing targeted research on climate change impacts, predictive models, and long‐term health monitoring. We emphasize the critical need for coordinated conservation efforts to protect wild primates and maintain natural ecosystem resilience in the face of escalating climate challenges.

Anthropogenic noise affects vocalisation properties of the territorial song of Western Australian magpies

Abstract:Anthropogenic noise is considered one of the most serious forms of pollution globally and has been shown to have negative effects on the distribution, behaviour, cognition and reproductive success of animal species worldwide. One of the most well researched impacts of anthropogenic noise is its effect on acoustic communication. Animals may adjust the rate, amplitude, duration, and/or frequency of their acoustic signals to better maintain communication when anthropogenic noise is present. In this study, we combine behavioural focals, amplitude measurements and audio recordings to investigate how female Western Australian magpies ( ) alter the acoustic features of their territorial song (known as a carol) when anthropogenic noise is present. Magpies reduced the rate at which they carolled when loud anthropogenic noise was present, and increased their peak frequency during anthropogenic noise, but, contrary to our hypotheses did not alter the amplitude, duration, or other frequency parameters of their carols. Results from this study add to the growing body of literature documenting changes to the vocal behaviour of wildlife in the presence of anthropogenic noise and highlights the importance of investigating multiple acoustic parameters to understand how species adjust their vocalisations in response to this pollutant.

Abstract:Wild animals, particularly those affected by urban expansion, frequently face challenges such as vehicle collisions, and encounters with domestic dogs. Rehabilitation in care facilities, usually conducted in ex-situ conditions, poses considerable challenges. In rescue centers, these animals are exposed to a new environment characterized by human noise and the presence of multiple species in a confined space. This can potentially trigger stress responses and immunosuppression, further compromising their health. This study aimed to assess the endocrine and immunological parameters of owls ( Megascops choliba ) under human care for a continuous 49-day period. Twelve adult owls were exposed to audio recordings from a rescue center between days 15 and 35. Fecal samples were collected from each owl every seven days, as well as blood samples from eight of these birds. Fecal samples were analyzed for glucocorticoid metabolites (GCM), while blood samples were used to measure plasma corticosterone levels, bacterial killing ability (BKA), and heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (H/L). Our findings revealed that GCM concentration increased during noise exposure regardless of sex, while plasma corticosterone levels remained unchanged. BKA decreased during noise exposure compared to before treatment, but H/L did not differ between time points. These results show that exposure to rescue center noise induces alterations in allostatic mediators in owls, requiring further research to address other physiological changes in individuals that may affect their recovery and maintenance under human care.

Abstract:Pulmonary arterial disease was produced by the placement of flexible polyvinyl chloride threads (similar in size, shape and flexibility to adult female Dirofilaria immitis) in the pulmonary arteries of dogs. Several different types of pathological change were apparent ranging from subendothelial oedema and endothelial loss, mild intimal proliferation and thrombus formation to organised fibrous encasement of the threads in areas where they had become impacted in the lumen of the artery. This range of pathological changes is very similar to that produced by D immitis and suggests that the intima of the canine pulmonary artery may react to different insults in a similar way.

Abstract:Epithelial cells of the small intestine are responsible for the resorption of different food components as well as potentially toxic agents such as benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), a particular contaminant of charcoal-grilled meat. This study was undertaken to investigate any functional relationship between the metabolism of B[a]P and the unidirectional transport of metabolites back into the intestinal lumen mediated by ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transport proteins. The human intestinal Caco-2 cell line was used. In addition, mdr1- and mrp2-transfected MDCK cells were employed to characterize the possible role of these ABC transport proteins in the polarized transport. After incubations of Caco-2 cells with B[a]P, HPLC analysis revealed that the primary metabolites of B[a]P were B[a]P-1-sulfate and B[a]P-3-sulfate. Other metabolites, such as B[a]P-3-glucuronide, B[a]P-9,10-diol, or B[a]P-3,6-quinone, could be detected only in small amounts. The transport experiments using Transwell chambers clearly showed that B[a]P-1- and B[a]P-3-sulfate were actively transported toward the apical (luminal) region. This transport increased after induction of CYP1A1/CYP1B1 (Phase 1)-metabolism, although a decrease was observed during concomitant inhibition. Inhibition studies using chemical inhibitors of P-glycoprotein, MRPs, showed no effects. A comparison between the transport of B[a]P-1- and B[a]P-3-sulfate in wild-type and mrp2-transfected MDCKII cells revealed no differences at all. The results indicate that B[a]P is metabolized by Caco-2 cells mainly to B[a]P-1- and B[a]P-3-sulfate, which are subject to an apically directed transport. Furthermore ABC transport proteins P-glycoprotein, MRP1, and MRP2 are not involved in this polarized B[a]P-sulfate secretion.
The effects of anthropogenic noise on frogs housed on exhibit at a public aquarium

Abstract:Frogs on public display altered their vocalizations in the face of anthropogenic noise from aquarium visitors. Anuran behavior and reproduction are dominated by vocalizations, rendering them vulnerable to the effects of signal masking. For anurans on display in zoos and aquaria, a major source of ambient noise is visitors, which pose a unique source of potential anthropogenic signal masking. Call characteristics (total call duration, and minimum and maximum call frequencies) of three populations of dendrobatids (Dendrobates leucomelas, Epipedobates tricolor, and Ranitomeya imitator) on public display were investigated at time periods of increasing visitor‐related noise (closed, off‐peak, and peak aquarium visiting hours) to determine if there were changes in call characteristics that correlated with changes in visitor noise levels. The data revealed that call length increased with more visitor noise for D. leucomelas and E. tricolor, with their longest calls during peak hours, and all three species had their shortest calls during closed hours. Both minimum and maximum call frequencies increased with more visitor noise for E. tricolor and R. imitator, with their highest frequencies during peak hours, and lowest frequencies during closed hours. This study found evidence that anurans on public display adjust their vocalizations in the presence of visitor noise. These findings support expanded monitoring of ambient noise for animals on public display to determine if noise poses significant effects that might influence well‐being or reproduction.

Experimental Exposure to Noise Alters Gut Microbiota in a Captive Songbird

Abstract:AbstractNoise pollution is an unprecedented evolutionary pressure on wild animals that can lead to alteration of stress hormone levels and changes in foraging behavior. Both corticosterone and feeding behavior can have direct effects on gut bacteria, as well as indirect effects through changes in gut physiology. Therefore, we hypothesized that exposure to noise will alter gut microbial communities via indirect effects on glucocorticoids and foraging behaviors. We exposed captive white-crowned sparrows to city-like noise and measured each individuals’ corticosterone level, food intake, and gut microbial diversity at the end of four treatments (acclimation, noise, recovery, and control) using a balanced repeated measures design. We found evidence that noise acts to increase corticosterone and decrease food intake, adding to a growing body of research indicating noise exposure affects stress hormone levels and foraging behaviors. We also found evidence to support our prediction for a causal, positive relationship between noise exposure and gut microbial diversity, such that birds had higher measures of alpha diversity during noise exposure. These results help to explain previous findings that urban, free-living white-crowned sparrows have higher bacterial richness than rural sparrows. However, noise appeared to act directly on the gut microbiome or, more likely, through an unmeasured variable, rather than through indirect effects via corticosterone and food intake. Altogether, our study indicates that noise affects plasma corticosterone, feeding behavior, and the gut microbiome in a songbird and raises new questions as to the mechanism linking noise exposure to gut microbial diversity.

Abstract:The BirdNET algorithm, originally designed to identify birds by sound, has been updated to include the Yucatán black howler monkey (Alouatta pigra). Further expansions are possible, which could facilitate broader use of broad‐scale passive acoustic monitoring of primates—and co‐occurring birds. Population declines and range contractions due to habitat loss are pervasive among nonhuman primates, with 60% of species threatened with extinction. However, the extensive vocal activity displayed by many primates makes them excellent candidates for passive acoustic surveys. Passive acoustic survey data is increasingly being used to support occupancy models, which have proven to be an efficient means of estimating both population trends and distributions. Passive acoustic surveys can be conducted relatively quickly and at broad scales, but efficient audio data processing has long proven elusive. The machine learning algorithm BirdNET was originally developed for birds but was recently expanded to include nonavian taxa. We demonstrate that BirdNET can accurately and efficiently identify an endangered primate, the Yucatán black howler monkey (Alouatta pigra), by sound in passive acoustic survey data (collected in southeastern Chiapas, Mexico), enabling us to use a single‐season occupancy model to inform further survey efforts. Importantly, we also generated data on up to 286 co‐occurring bird species, demonstrating the value of integrated animal sound classification tools for biodiversity surveys. BirdNET is freely available, requires no computer science expertise to use, and can readily be expanded to include more species (e.g., its species list recently tripled to >3000), suggesting that passive acoustic surveys, and thus occupancy modeling, for primate conservation could rapidly become much more accessible. Importantly, the long history of bioacoustics in primate research has yielded a wealth of information about their vocal behavior, which can facilitate appropriate survey design and data interpretation.

Vocal Control by the Common Marmoset in the Presence of Interfering Noise.

Abstract:SUMMARY The natural environment is inherently noisy with acoustic interferences. It is, therefore, beneficial for a species to modify its vocal production to effectively communicate in the presence of interfering noises. Non-human primates have been traditionally considered to possess limited voluntary vocal control, but little is known about their ability to modify vocal behavior when encountering interfering noises. Here we tested the ability of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) to control the initiation of vocalizations and maintain vocal interactions between pairs in an acoustic environment in which the length and predictability (periodic or random aperiodic occurrences) of interfering noise bursts were varied. Despite the presence of interfering noise, the marmosets continued to engage in antiphonal calling behavior. Results showed that the overwhelming majority of calls were initiated during silence gaps even when the length of the silence gap following each noise burst was unpredictable. During the periodic noise conditions, as the length of the silence gap decreased, the latency between the end of noise burst and call onset decreased significantly. In contrast, when presented with aperiodic noise bursts, the marmosets chose to call predominantly during long (4 and 8 s) over short (2 s) silence gaps. In the 8 s periodic noise conditions, a marmoset pair either initiated both calls of an antiphonal exchange within the same silence gap or exchanged calls in two consecutive silence gaps. Our findings provide compelling evidence that common marmosets are capable of modifying their vocal production according to the dynamics of their acoustic environment during vocal communication.
The impact of noise on the stress response of Portunus trituberculatus in a land-based monoculture system

Abstract:Human-induced noise, particularly from shipping and construction, significantly affects the stress responses of swimming crabs (Portunus trituberculatus Miers, 1876). Prolonged exposure can lead to stress responses, impacting the overall health of the crabs. This study aimed to assess how noise affects stress responses in P. trituberculatus. The sound had an intensity of 163 dB 1μPa for the noise condition and 114 dB 1μPa for ambient sound. P. trituberculatus was continuously exposed to the noise stimulus for six hours. Samples of serum, muscle tissue, gills, and hepatopancreas were collected at multiple time points: 0 min, 10 min, 30 min, 1 h, 3 h, 6 h, and 7 h. The serum cortisol levels in the noise-exposed group were significantly higher than those in the control group at 30 min and 6 h. The two groups had no significant differences regarding serum glucose and muscle lactic acid content. In the noise-exposed group, the gills exhibited significantly lower superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels. Conversely, for the hepatopancreas, the SOD levels in the noise-exposed group were notably lower than those in the control group at 10 min but significantly higher at 6 h and 7 h. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were substantially higher in the noise-exposed group than in the control group at 30 min and 6 h. This study demonstrates that P. trituberculatus experiences a physiological stress response to acoustic sounds.

Abstract:We investigate the impact of anthropogenic noise on the foraging efficiency of leafcutter ants ( Acromyrmex octospinosus ) in a controlled laboratory experiment. Anthropogenic noise is a widespread, pervasive and increasing environmental pollutant and its negative impacts on animal fitness and behaviour have been well documented. Much of this evidence has come from studies concerning vertebrate species with very little evidence for terrestrial invertebrates, especially social living invertebrates. We compare movement speed, forage fragment size, and colony activity levels of ants exposed to intermittent elevated noise and in ambient noise conditions. We use intermittent and temporally unpredictable bursts of white noise produced from a vibration speaker to create the elevated noise profile. Ant movement speed increased under elevated noise conditions when travelling to collect forage material and when returning to the colony nest. The size of individually measured foraged material was significantly reduced under elevated noise conditions. Colony activity, the number of ants moving along the forage route, was not affected by elevated noise and was consistent throughout the foraging events. Increased foraging speed and smaller forage fragments suggests that the ants had to make more foraging trips over an extended period, which is likely to affect energy expenditure and increases exposure to predators. This is likely to have significant fitness impacts for the colony over time.
