Abstract:This study evaluated the 3-dimensional (3D) fit of self-glazed zirconia monolithic crowns fabricated by wet deposition, in comparison with milled zirconia and lithium disilicate monolithic crowns. Dual-scan protocol was used to assess the fit of crowns. Root mean squares (RMS) and uniformity index (UI) were calculated to describe the gap size and uniformity. The self-glazed zirconia crowns had significantly lower RMS values for the gaps at axial wall and transition regions than the milled zirconia crowns, and for the gaps at occlusal region than both milled crowns. All 3 types of crowns had comparable RMS values for the gaps at marginal and chamfer regions and comparable UI values for both marginal and internal gaps. The 3D fit of the self-glazed zirconia monolithic crowns was clinically acceptable and they exhibited better fit at occlusal region than the milled crowns.

Abstract:STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:Nanoparticle jetting (NPJ) is a novel ceramic 3D-printing technology with high printing accuracy. However, studies reporting the accuracy of zirconia crowns manufactured by NPJ and comparing them with conventional zirconia crowns are lacking. PURPOSE:The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate and compare the trueness, crown fit, and margin quality of monolithic zirconia crowns manufactured by NPJ with those milled by a computer numerical control system. MATERIAL AND METHODS:A gypsum left mandibular first molar was prepared and scanned with an intraoral scanner (TRIOS 4). Three types of monolithic crowns were manufactured through 3D printing and subtractive manufacturing (SM): NPJ (3D printing), VITA (milling), UPCERA (milling). The crowns were scanned, and the dimensional deviation (trueness) was evaluated and compared by using a software program. The triple scan method was used to measure crown fit and uniform index through precise alignment in the software program, and margin quality was also observed with an optical microscope. The data were analyzed with 1-way analysis of variance and the Tukey post hoc test (α=.05). RESULTS:The NPJ group reported better trueness of all crown and axial surfaces compared with the other SM group (P<.001), but marginal trueness (P=.601), intaglio surface (P=.596), and occlusal surface (P=.641) were statistically similar compared with the Vita milled group. All 3 groups reported clinically acceptable crown fit and uniformity with statistically similar values (P>.05). The NPJ group had more crowns judged to have flawless margin quality compared with the milled groups. CONCLUSIONS:All 3 manufacturing methods can fabricate zirconia crowns with a clinically acceptable crown fit. The NPJ system could be used to manufacture monolithic zirconia crowns with better margin quality and proximal surface trueness than milled crowns.

Abstract:This experimental study aimed to compare the internal fit (marginal fit and internal discrepancy) of metal crowns fabricated by traditional casting and digital methods (computer numerically controlled (CNC) milling and three-dimensional [3D] printing). Thirty standard master abutment models were fabricated using a 3D printing technique with digital software. Metal crowns were fabricated by traditional casting, CNC milling, and 3D printing. The silicon replica method was used to measure the marginal and internal fit. A thin layer of low-viscosity polyvinyl siloxane material was placed inside each crown and on the die (like a seat) until the material was set. Replicas were examined at four reference points under a microscope: the central pit (M1), cusp tip (M2), axial wall (M3), and margin (M4). The measured data were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to verify statistical significance, which was set at p < 0.05. In the traditional casting group, the minimum distance measured was at M3 (90.68 ± 14.4 μm) and the maximum distance measured was at M1 (145.12 ± 22 μm). In the milling group, the minimum distance measured was at M3 (71.85 ± 23.69 μm) and the maximum distance measured was at M1 (108.68 ± 10.52 μm). In the 3D printing group, the minimum distance measured was at M3 (100.59 ± 9.26 μm) and the maximum distance measured was at M1 (122.33 ± 7.66 μm). The mean discrepancy for the traditional casting, CNC milling, and 3D printing groups was 120.20, 92.15, and 111.85 μm, respectively, showing significant differences (P < 0.05). All three methods of metal crown fabrication, that is, traditional casting, CNC milling, and 3D printing, had values within the clinically acceptable range. The marginal and internal fit of the crown was far superior in the CNC milling method.

Fit comparison of interim crowns manufactured with open and proprietary 3D printing modes versus milling technology: An in vitro study

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to assess the fit of interim crowns produced using DLP-based 3D printing with different manufacturing workflows-open and proprietary-versus milling technology. Methods: A total of 120 crowns were evaluated using the replica technique. The control group (Mill, n = 30) was manufactured via subtractive technology. Experimental groups were printed using a DLP printer (SprintRay Pro95). In the proprietary mode (SR100, n = 30), manufacturer resin was used with a 100-μm layer thickness (LT) and a splashing cleaning postprocessing. In the open mode, validated resin was used. Group B100 (n = 30) had a 100-μm LT, and group B50 (n = 30) had a 50-μm followed by postprocessing in an ultrasonic bath with full immersion in isopropyl alcohol. Kruskal-Wallis tests with Bonferroni correction was applied after normal analysis (α = 0.05). Results: Group B50 exhibited the best overall fit (123.87 ± 67.42 μm), which was comparable to the gold standard Milling group, which demonstrated the lowest marginal fit (p = 0.760). SR100 showed significantly poorer performance compared to Mill, B50, and B100 (p < 0.001). Conclusions: 3D printed and milled interim crowns generally demonstrated clinically acceptable fit, with the exception of the SR100 group. Postprocessing notably influenced crown fit, with the open mode with total immersion in isopropyl alcohol being superior. Clinical significance: The present study demonstrates that the selection of an optimal manufacturing and postprocessing workflow results in superior fit for interim crowns. This enables dental professionals to evaluate protocols and ensure reliable outcomes with improved clinical outcomes in interim crown fabrication.

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the internal adaptations of cast crowns made from resin patterns produced using three different computer-aided design/computer-assisted manufacturing technologies. Materials and Methods: A full-crown abutment made of zirconia was digitized using an intraoral scanner, and the design of the crown was finished on the digital model. Resin patterns were fabricated using a fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer (LT group), a digital light projection (DLP) 3D printer (EV group), or a five-axis milling machine (ZT group). All patterns were cast in cobalt-chromium alloy crowns. Crowns made from traditional handmade wax patterns (HM group) were used as controls. Each group contained 10 samples. The internal gaps of the patterns were analyzed using a 3D replica method and optical digitization. The results were compared using Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance (ANOVA), a one-sample t test, and signed rank test (alpha = .05). Results: For the LT group, the marginal and axial gaps were significantly larger than in the other three groups (P < .05), but the occlusal adaptation did not reveal a significant difference (P > .05). In the ZT group, the axial gap was slightly smaller than in the HM group (P < .0083). All the means of gaps in all areas in the four groups were less than 150 mu m. Conclusion: Casting crowns using casting patterns made from all three CAD/CAM systems could not produce the prescribed parameters, but the crowns showed clinically acceptable internal adaptations.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as additive printing, is increasing its importance in every field of dentistry. There are different methods of AM, one of these being digital light processing (DLP). Several factors can influence the accuracy of printed crowns, and one of them is the building or printing orientation. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the trueness and precision of temporary crowns produced via DLP with different printing angles. An artificial molar prepared to receive a full crown was scanned. A total of 15 resin crowns were printed through DLP and divided into three groups considering 3 different printing angulations: 90°, 45° or a custom angulation. Trueness and precision were evaluated considering the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). Regarding the internal fit, the 90° printing angulation showed a higher accuracy compared to the other angulations, whereas regarding the occlusal aspect, Custom angulation crowns were better. Custom Crowns showed a higher precision when considering the internal aspect, being equal to the 90° printing angulation regarding the occlusal aspect. 135° printing angulation value performed equal or worse precision and accuracy in all zones. In terms of trueness and precision, custom angulation crowns showed acceptable internal and occlusal results for 3D printed provisional crowns.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The accuracy of dental crowns is crucial for their longevity and effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate how the precision of crowns is affected by two different fabrication methods, either subtractive (milling) or additive (3D printing), within computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) technology. METHODS: A standardised digital scan of a maxillary first molar with a shoulder margin (.stl file) was used to design and fabricate crowns through both subtractive (milling) and additive (3D printing) processes. The crowns' marginal and internal fits were assessed comprehensively. Statistical analysis, including two-way ANOVA and independent t-tests, revealed significant differences in fitting accuracy between the two methods. RESULTS: Crowns produced via 3D printing demonstrated superior fitting with minimal marginal (14 ± 5 μm) and internal discrepancies (22 ± 5 μm) compared to milling (marginal: 22 ± 4 μm, internal: 23 ± 3 μm), indicating a statistically significant advantage in precision (p⁢s⩽ 0.022 for marginal fit). CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that 3D printing may offer a more accurate alternative to milling in the fabrication of digital dental prostheses, potentially revolutionising the field with its enhanced precision capabilities.

Abstract:Objective: To study the dimensional accuracy of the Co-Cr crowns prepared by selective laser melting(SLM) technology and to evaluate their internal and marginal fit by "Virtual seating". Methods: The Co-Cr metal crowns were fabricated with 2 different methods(n = 10): milling wax with lost-wax method in the control group and SLM in the test group. After collecting the data of the die and crowns, "virtual seating" was completed by the software of reverse engineering. The gaps between the die and crowns on the 2D cross-sectional were measured by the same software. At last, crowns were cemented on the dies. And the thickness of the crowns and the cement films were measured under a scanning electron microscope. Data were statistically analyzed. Results: The most appropriate pre-set die spacer thickness was 50 μm. The relative errors of the crown thickness of SLM group and the control group were 1. 80％ and 2. 20％ respectively(P＞ 0. 05). No statistically significant difference was found in both internal and marginal fit between the 2 groups (P＞ 0. 05). And there was no statistical difference between the 2 measuring methods (P＞ 0. 05). Conclusion: SLM technique achieves clinically values for internal and marginal fit. "Virtual seating" can be used for evaluate crown dimensional accuracy.

Abstract:NSAIDs have been a mainstay of therapy for rheumatologic diseases for a number of years. Unfortunately, their use was accompanied by sometimes unacceptable gastrointestinal and/or renal side effects. Therefore, safer treatment options were sought. In the process of such a search, selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors were identified. Drugs in this class have anti-inflammatory properties similar to NSAIDs and did not produce anywhere near the same pattern of NSAID-related gastrotoxicity. The enthusiasm for this class of drugs would appear, at least on the surface, to be well grounded. However, establishing the renal side effect profile of the selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors would appear to be a work in progress. Formal studies with selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors have not been conducted in the congestive heart failure population. Information does though exist for other patient cohorts--similarly "prostaglandin-dependent" for their integrity of renal function, such as the elderly and sodium-deplete individual. These data would strongly suggest that the selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors could decrease glomerular filtration rate and stimulate salt and water retention, comparable to what occurs with nonselective NSAIDs. To date, no compelling information exists, which supports the notion that differences exist among the currently available selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors--celecoxib and--in the potential to negatively impact renal function in this and similarly compromised patient populations. Clinical evaluation of the fit of lithium disilicate crowns fabricated with three different CAD-CAM systems

Abstract:Statement of problem: The fit and performance of prostheses fabricated using various computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) systems have been evaluated. However, most studies were conducted in vitro, and relatively few have addressed gingival parameters and prosthesis fit under clinical conditions. Purpose: This clinical study aimed to compare the fit of lithium disilicate crowns produced using 3 CAD-CAM systems and evaluate clinical results up to 6 months after delivery. Material and methods: Forty participants requiring a single crown were recruited. Three monolithic lithium disilicate crowns were fabricated per participant by using 3 different CAD-CAM systems (intraoral scanners, CAD software, and milling machines): CEREC group (CEREC Bluecam, CEREC AC, CEREC MC); EZIS group (EZIS PO, EZIS VR, EZIS HM); and TRIOS group (TRIOS 3, EXO-CAD, ARUM-4X). The fit of the prostheses was assessed via a silicone replica technique, and the most acceptable crown was delivered; 12 were selected from the CEREC group, 16 from the EZIS group, and 12 from the TRIOS group. Follow-up clinical examinations were performed at 1, 3, and 6 months after delivery. The Kruskal-Wallis test with the post hoc Mann-Whitney U test was conducted to analyze significant differences in crown fit and periodontal conditions among the groups (α=.05). Results: The marginal gap of the CEREC group was significantly higher than that of the EZIS group, and the occlusal gap of the EZIS group was significantly lower than those of the CEREC and TRIOS groups (P<.05). Probing depth, bleeding index, and plaque index showed no intergroup differences at 6 months (P>.05). Conclusions: The lithium disilicate crowns of all groups showed clinically acceptable fit. No significant differences were found among the groups in terms of periodontal conditions after 6 months.

Abstract:Background: The purpose of this in vitro study is to fabricate a novel metal-ceramic prosthesis with a porous structure, to compensate for the disadvantages associated with the design of existing prostheses, and to measure the internal fit of this prosthesis. Materials and methods: In this in vitro study, the mandibular first molar was scanned from the dental computer-aided-design to design a 3 mm porous structure frame. The frame was produced using the lamination method and fired in a pressed ceramic. For comparison, pore-free specimens were fabricated by selective laser sintering (SLS) as described above, and porous specimens were fabricated by casting (total n = 30). The internal fit was then measured using a digital microscope (at 100× magnification), and the data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05). Results: The total mean internal discrepancies for each group were 42.32 ± 22.50 μm for the porous structure SLS group (PS-group), 107.54 ± 38.75 μm for no-porous casting group (group), and 121.36 ± 50.19 μm for the no-porous SLS group (group), with significant differences (P < 0.05) among all groups. Conclusion: The internal discrepancies of porous structure crown fabricated by SLS were smaller than that of no-porous crown fabricated by casting and SLS. Based on these laboratory findings, further studies should be conducted to evaluate the feasibility of the newly designed porous structure and press ceramic prosthesis to determine whether they can be applied in clinical practice.

Abstract:Statement of problem The adaptation of digitally produced crowns is affected by the design software program and manufacturing method. The effect of artificial intelligence (AI) software program design on the adaptation of the crowns is unclear and comparative evaluations should be documented. Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess the marginal and internal gaps, the absolute marginal discrepancies, and the 3-dimensional (3D) discrepancy volumes of the resin-based milled and 3D printed crowns for primary teeth designed with computer-aided design (CAD) and AI software programs by using microcomputed tomography (μCT). Material and methods A total of 40 resin-based esthetic crowns were produced for a prepared typodont tooth (right mandibular primary second molar) according to the design software program (CAD and AI) and manufacturing method (milling and 3D printing) (n=10). Four experimental groups were generated as CAD-milled, CAD-3D printed, AI-milled, and AI-3D printed. The marginal, axial, and occlusal gap values, the absolute marginal discrepancies, and the 3D discrepancy volumes of the specimens were measured by using μCT. The data were analyzed by using 2-way ANOVA and the Tukey HSD tests (α=.05). Results The lowest value for the marginal gap (54 ±43 μm) was observed in the CAD-milled group and the marginal gap value of the AI-3D printed group was significantly lower than the AI-milled group ( P <.05). The lowest value for the axial gap (63 ±7 μm) was observed in the AI-3D printed group, and the highest value (145 ±58 μm) was observed in the CAD-milled group; the result for the occlusal gap value was opposite. The highest absolute marginal discrepancy value was observed in the CAD-milled group. The 3D discrepancy volumes increased in the order of the CAD-3D printed, AI-milled, CAD-milled, and AI-3D printed groups. Conclusions The marginal and internal gap values of the resin-based crowns were affected by the design software program and manufacturing method; however, tested groups showed clinically acceptable gap values.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the intaglio surface trueness of interim dental crowns fabricated with three 3-dimensional (3D) printing and milling technologies. Dental crown was designated and assigned as a computer-aided design (CAD) reference model (CRM). Interim dental crowns were fabricated based on CRM using two types of 3D printer technologies (stereolithography apparatus and digital light processing) and one type of milling machine (n = 15 per technology). The fabricated interim dental crowns were obtained via 3D modeling of the intaglio surface using a laboratory scanner and designated as CAD test models (CTMs). The alignment and 3D comparison of CRM and CTM were performed based on the intaglio surface using a 3D inspection software program (Geomagic Control X). Statistical analysis was validated using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey HSD test (α = 0.05). There were significant differences in intaglio surface trueness between the three different fabrication technologies, and high trueness values were observed in the milling group (p < 0.05). In the milling group, there was a significant difference in trueness according to the location of the intaglio surface (p < 0.001). In the manufacturing process of interim dental crowns, 3D printing technologies showed superior and uniform manufacturing accuracy than milling technology.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the wear resistance of primary tooth enamel and 3 kinds of 3D printing materials and to compare the marginal fitness and internal suitability of prefabricated all-ceramic crowns, computer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) all-ceramic crowns, and three 3D-printed deciduous molar crowns. Multifunctional friction wear testing machine was used to image the wear surface of the sample and calculate the maximum wear depth and volume loss value of each sample. The internal fit evaluation used the silicon replica method, The four points were measured using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The obtained data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey HSD-test with a fully randomized design (p<0.05). The results showed the wear resistance of E-Dent400 was better than that of PEEK and three different 3D printed materials have good wear resistance compared with the primary tooth enamel. The measured values at M1 and M4 of E-Dent400 were both the smallest.

Abstract:Statement of problem: High-level evidence regarding the accuracy and adaptation of 1-piece endodontic crowns fabricated by using 3-dimensional (3D) printing technology is lacking. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the accuracy and adaptation of 1-piece endodontic crowns produced through 3D printing and computer-numerical-control milling technology and to explore the influence of trueness on 1-piece endodontic crown adaptation. Material and methods: One-piece endodontic crowns were prepared for a typodont right mandibular first molar, scanned with a 3Shape E3 scanner, and designed with a computer-aided design software program. Two types of 1-piece endodontic crowns were fabricated: 3D printed by using resin and zirconia slurry and milled from Grandio and zirconia blocks. A reverse engineering software program was used to superimpose 4 groups of crowns with the reference crowns used for accuracy analysis. Microcomputed tomography was used to measure 1-piece endodontic crown adaptation. The correlation between trueness and adaptation was evaluated through the Spearman correlation test (α=.05). Results: Milled resin-based 1-piece endodontic crowns demonstrated better trueness on marginal and occlusal surfaces compared with 3D printed ones (P<.001). However, no significant difference was observed in the trueness of intaglio surfaces between the 2 groups (P>.05). The milled group exhibited better adaptations than the printed one (P<.05). For zirconia 1-piece endodontic crowns, no significant differences were found in trueness or adaptation between the milled and printed groups (P>.05). Notably, the trueness of the axial wall had the greatest impact on overall crown adaptation, with its adaptation closely linked to the trueness of each area, particularly the axial wall. Conclusions: Milled resin-based 1-piece endodontic crowns exhibited higher levels of trueness and adaptation compared with 3D printed ones, while 3D printed zirconia 1-piece endodontic crowns were comparable with milled ones.

Abstract:In this study, the accuracy (precision and trueness) of digital impressions and the fitness of single crowns manufactured based on digital impressions were evaluated. #14-17 epoxy resin dentitions were made, while full-crown preparations of extracted natural teeth were embedded at #16. (1) To assess precision, deviations among repeated scan models made by intraoral scanner TRIOS and MHT and model scanner D700 and inEos were calculated through best-fit algorithm and three-dimensional (3D) comparison. Root mean square (RMS) and color-coded difference images were offered. (2) To assess trueness, micro computed tomography (micro-CT) was used to get the reference model (REF). Deviations between REF and repeated scan models (from (1)) were calculated. (3) To assess fitness, single crowns were manufactured based on TRIOS, MHT, D700 and inEos scan models. The adhesive gaps were evaluated under stereomicroscope after cross-sectioned. Digital impressions showed lower precision and better trueness. Except for MHT, the means of RMS for precision were lower than 10 m. Digital impressions showed better internal fitness. Fitness of single crowns based on digital impressions was up to clinical standard. Digital impressions could be an alternative method for single crowns manufacturing.

Abstract:Eun-Jeong Bae, Ji-Hwan Kim, Joong Yeon Lim Dental Research Journal 2022 19(1):65-65 Background: The purpose of this in vitro study is to fabricate a novel metal–ceramic prosthesis with a porous structure, to compensate for the disadvantages associated with the design of existing prostheses, and to measure the internal fit of this prosthesis. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study, the mandibular first molar was scanned from the dental computer-aided-design to design a 3 mm porous structure frame. The frame was produced using the lamination method and fired in a pressed ceramic. For comparison, pore-free specimens were fabricated by selective laser sintering (SLS) as described above, and porous specimens were fabricated by casting (total n = 30). The internal fit was then measured using a digital microscope (at 100× magnification), and the data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05). Results: The total mean internal discrepancies for each group were 42.32 ± 22.50 μm for the porous structure SLS group (PS-group), 107.54 ± 38.75 μm for no-porous casting group (group), and 121.36 ± 50.19 μm for the no-porous SLS group (group), with significant differences (P < 0.05) among all groups. Conclusion: The internal discrepancies of porous structure crown fabricated by SLS were smaller than that of no-porous crown fabricated by casting and SLS. Based on these laboratory findings, further studies should be conducted to evaluate the feasibility of the newly designed porous structure and press ceramic prosthesis to determine whether they can be applied in clinical practice.
Dimensional Accuracy of Dental Models for Three-Unit Prostheses Fabricated by Various 3D Printing Technologies

Abstract:Previous studies on accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) printed model focused on full arch measurements at few points. The aim of this study was to examine the dimensional accuracy of 3D-printed models which were teeth-prepped for three-unit fixed prostheses, especially at margin and proximal contact areas. The prepped dental model was scanned with a desktop scanner. Using this reference file, test models were fabricated by digital light processing (DLP), Multi-Jet printing (MJP), and stereo-lithography apparatus (SLA) techniques. We calculated the accuracy (trueness and precision) of 3D-printed models on 3D planes, and deviations of each measured points at buccolingual and mesiodistal planes. We also analyzed the surface roughness of resin printed models. For overall 3D analysis, MJP showed significantly higher accuracy (trueness) than DLP and SLA techniques; however, there was not any statistically significant difference on precision. For deviations on margins of molar tooth and distance to proximal contact, MJP showed significantly accurate results; however, for a premolar tooth, there was no significant difference between the groups. 3D color maps of printed models showed contraction buccolingually, and surface roughness of the models fabricated by MJP technique was observed as the lowest. The accuracy of the 3D-printed resin models by DLP, MJP, and SLA techniques showed a clinically acceptable range to use as a working model for manufacturing dental prostheses
