Abstract:CdS nanoparticles with various shapes were directly synthesized in several solvents by adopting a solvothermal route at 160°C for 12hours respectively, using distilled water(H2O), N,N-Dimethylformamide(DMF), ethanolamine(an) and ethylenediamine(en) as the solvent and the shape-controlled reactant. The structure and morphology of the products are characterized, and the effect of the solvents on the structure, shape and size has been discussed, considering the physical and structural properties of the solvents. The optical properties of the products synthesized in an and en were revealed by photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The above results contribute to the synthesis of CdS and other semiconductor nanoparticles with tuned and controllable shape and size.

Abstract:ZnS nanoparticles and one-dimensional nanocrystals were obtained by in-situ synthesis in Aa-AMPS-hT ternary periodic copolymer by ion complexometry and self-assembly method. The micro-morphology, structure and optical properties were characterized by TEM, SED, UV-vis spectra and PL spectra. The results show that the products are hexagonal ZnS nanocrystals with 15 nm-215 nm in diameter. The morphology and dimension of ZnS nanoparticles could be controlled by varying the sulfaration time. The UV-vis absorption spectra indicate that the absorption edges are blue-shifted by shortening the sulfuration time, exhibiting a marked quantum size effect. With shortening sulfuration time, the photoluminescence emission peak of 409.8 nm is blue-shifted, which could be ascribed to be the forbidden gap emission.

Abstract:Using phosphine-free and "green" chalcogen precursors, controlled synthesis of high quality CdS/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell1/shell2 nanocrystals has been successfully carried out using different sized CdS nanocrystals as cores. The properties and structures of the synthesized nanocrystals were characterized by absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). By changing CdS core sizes and/or ZnSe shell thicknesses, the PL range of CdS/ZnSe core/shell nanocrystals could be adjusted from 500 nm to 630 nm with type-II optical characteristics. The PL quantum yields (QYs) of these nanocrystals were 50-60% after the growth of thick ZnS shells, their full width at half maximum (FWHM) was kept below 50 nm during the entire growth process, and the total Cd content was reduced to about 1% in atomic ratio. TEM images showed narrow size distributions and XRD results demonstrated the zinc blende structure of CdS was retained following subsequent growth of ZnSe and ZnS shells. More than 2 g of high quality CdS/ZnSe/ZnS nanocrystals were successfully prepared in a large scale synthesis with the use of only low-cost, green, and environmentally friendly reagents.

Abstract:Cadmium sulphide (CdS) nanorods have been prepared by a novel thioglycolic acid assisted hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction shows that the nanorods are of hexagonal structure, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy further identifies that the CdS nanorods are single crystalline in nature. The optical properties of CdS nanorods were characterized by ultraviolet–vis and photoluminescence spectra. Furthermore, the mechanism for the TGA assisted hydrothermal synthesis of CdS nanorods has been preliminary presented.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline CdS with different morphologies and particle sizes was obtained via a novel solvothermal reaction between cadmium sails such as Cd(NO3)(2).4H(2)O or CdSO4.8/3H(2)O and thiourea (Tu) at relatively low temperature. It is found that solvents play an important role in controlling the morphology and particle sizes of the nanocrystalline CdS product. The effect of solvents, anions of the cadmium salt, the molar ratio of Tu to the cadmium salt, and temperature on the morphology, particle sizes and phase of nanocrystalline CdS products has been investigated.

Abstract:The formation of CdS nanotetrahedrons, pencil-shaped nanorods, tetrapods, prickly spheres, and high aspect-ratio hexagonal nanoprisms has been, respectively, achieved by adjusting the ratio of two solvents ethylenediamine and ethylene glycol under the solvothermal condition. None of the surfactants or other templates was needed in the process. The reaction time and temperature can be used as the additional means to control the size and morphology. By closely inspecting the growing process of the tetrapod structure and the crystallographic analysis of the products, we proposed that the lattice space match and the location match of ions at the interface of the zinc blende core and the wurtzite arms are two important structural factors to guide this furcate growth. Also, the anisotropic adsorption ability of ethylenediamine at the different surfaces of wurtzite CdS crystals results in the 1D growth of the arms. The possible growing mechanisms of CdS with other shapes were also discussed.

Abstract:CdS and alloyed CdS x Se 1−x nanocrystals were prepared by a simple noninjection method without nucleation initiators. Oleic acid (OA) was used to stabilize the growth of the CdS nanocrystals. The size of the CdS nanocrystals can be tuned by changing the OA/Cd molar ratios. On the basis of the successful synthesis of CdS nanocrystals, alloyed CdS x Se 1−x nanocrystals can also be prepared by simply replacing certain amount of S precursor with equal amount of Se precursor, verified by TEM, XRD, EDX as well as UV–Vis absorption analysis. The optical properties of the alloyed CdS x Se 1−x nanocrystals can be tuned by adjusting the S/Se feed molar ratios. This synthetic approach developed is highly reproducible and can be readily scaled up for potential industrial production.

Abstract:Large-scale CdS nanowires with uniform diameter and high aspect ratios were synthesized using a simple solvothermal route that employed CdCl2 and S powder as starting materials, ethylenediamine (en) as the solvent. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show that the products are hexagonal structure CdS nanowires with diameter of 40nm and length up to 10μm. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high resolution TEM (HRTEM) studies indicate the single-crystalline nature of CdS nanowires with an oriented growth along the c-axis direction. The optical properties of the products were characterized by optical absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra. Based on the results of contrastive experiments, it is found that the sulfur source and the solvent play significant roles in the formation of uniform nanowires. A possible formation mechanism of nanowires is discussed.

Abstract:CdSe nanoparticles were prepared in the aqueous solution at room temperature. The purity of the resulting CdSe particles depended on the pH values and reaction time, increasing the pH of the reaction solution to similar to 11 and prolonging the react time, the purer CdSe could be achieved, and the average particle size was about 50 nm. When mercaptoacteic acid was participated in the reaction as a stabilizer, the shape of the resulting CdSe particles changed from nanoparticles (cluters) to nanorods. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, and Scanning electron. microscopy respectively. The CdSe formation mechanism and its properties were discussed.

Abstract:Multicolored luminescent CdxZn1−xS nanocrystals in aqueous solution have been controllably synthesized with thioglycollic acid (TGA) as a surface modifier. The CdxZn1−xS nanocrystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum, ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectra, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. From a combination of TEM data and computing methods according to UV–vis spectra and XRD patterns, the particle size of CdS nanocrystal was found to be about 4nm. Homogeneous CdxZn1−xS nanocrystals have the same well-crystallized cubic lattice structure. FT-IR spectrum indicates that the carboxyl group of TGA is coated on the surface of nanocrystals successfully. The composition dependent UV–vis and PL spectra reveal that the series CdxZn1−xS nanocrystals exhibit good optical properties, which can be modulated by changing the cation molar ratio of Zn:Cd in the reactants. The green and yellow luminescence of CdxZn1−xS nanocrystals is brightly eye-viewable under UV irradiation.

Abstract:Phase transfer techniques possess remarkable advantages for the synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials. In contrast to the abundant reports on the preparation of noble metal nanoparticles using phase transfer, the number of semiconductor nanocrystals syntheses based on phase transfer techniques is still limited. Herein, we report a systematic study of the phase transfer-based synthesis of HgS nanocrystals, including the tuning of their morphology/shape by either solvent choice or temperature. This strategy involves the transfer of Hg(II) ions from aqueous solution to toluene, oleic acid or oleylamine and subsequent sulfidation at room or elevated temperature. Furthermore, we have extended this phase-transfer based strategy to the fabrication of HgS-Au nanocomposites. The studies in this work might provide a facile route for producing HgS nanocrystals with desirable properties and offer an effective strategy to investigate the influence of the morphology of HgS on the physical/chemical properties of various HgS-based materials.

Abstract:A facile green approach has been developed to control the growth regime in the aqueous synthesis of CdTe semiconductor Quantum dots (QDs) via the electrochemistry method. The Low growth temperature and slow injection of Te precursors are used to prolong the diffusion controlled stage and thus suppress Ostwald ripening during nanocrystal growth. The experimental results showed that a low concentration of Te precursor would definitely influence the growth procedure. The narrow absorption peaks in the UV-visible absorption spectra, as well as transmission electron microscopy images indicated that the as-prepared CdTe QDs had a good monodispersity. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern suggested that the as-prepared QDs have high crystallinity and cubic structure. The QDs exhibited high fluorescence QYs about 50% and the best of QY 67% without any postpreparative treatment over a broad spectral range of 516-609 nm, which could be further broadened by long-term refluxing. The current work suggested that electrochemical method was an attractive approach to the synthesis of high-quality II-VI semiconductor QDs at a large scale.

Abstract:A novel two-step controlled basic water phase method has been developed for synthesizing size-tunable and water-soluble CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell quantum dots with high quantum yield and good stability. The size of the prepared CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell quantum dots can be easily manipulated by varying the concentrations of NaOH solution step by step. The maximal emission wavelengths of the series CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell QDs were from 513nm to 610nm (emission colors tuned from green to red). The CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell quantum dots not only possess high quantum yield (up to 83%) but also exhibit excellent photostability (being stable after being stored for more than 2 months). The CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell quantum dots were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction spectrometry, ultraviolet–visible spectrometry and fluorescence spectrometry. The water-soluble nature of the CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell quantum dots offers great potentiality for their chemical and biological applications. This method is easily controlled, low-cost and reproducible. So it is possible to extend this approach to the preparation of other size-tunable inorganic metal hydroxide capped core/shell quantum dots.

Abstract:A facile method to control the synthesis and self-assembly of mondisperse Ag and Ag2S nanocrystals with a narrow-size distribution is described. Uniform Ag nanoparticles of less than 4 nm were obtained by thermolysis of Ag oleate complexes in the presence of oleic acid and dodecylamine, and monodisperse Ag nanoparticles of less than 10 nm were also prepared in one step by using dodecylamine and oleic acid as capping agents. Moreover, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties of the Ag substrates have also been investigated. It is worth mentioning that these Ag nanoparticles and assemblies show great differences in the SERS activities of Rhodamine B dye. In addition, the superlattices of Ag2S nanocrystals were synthesized with Ag oleate complexes, alkanethiol, and sulfur as the reactants. The resulting highly monodisperse nanocrystals can easily self-assemble into interesting superstructures in the solution phase without any additional assembly steps. This method may be extended to the size-controlled preparation and assembly of many other noble-metal and transition-metal chalcogenide nanoparticles. These results will aid the study of the physicochemical properties of the superlattice assemblies and construction of functional macroscopic architectures or devices.

Abstract:We report an environmentally friendly hydrothermal method assisted by inorganic salt for controlling the shape of CdS nanostructure. First, we make aqueous solution of NaCl to fabricate CdS via a hydrothermal reaction at 160 °C, 12 h. Afterward, the outcomes of CdS change from nanosphere to hierarchically flower-like structure, with a higher concentration of NaCl solution. Further investigation reveals improved stability of flower-like CdS photocatalyst for water treatment.

Abstract:A facile L-cysteine-assisted route was designed for the selectively controlled synthesis of 1D and novel, interesting 3D CdS spherical nanostructures constructed from CdS nanorods (or nanopolypods) in a binary solution. By controlling reaction conditions such as the molar ratio between Cd(OAc)(2) and L-cysteine and the volume ratio of the mixed solvents, the synthesis of various 3D architectural structures and 1D wirelike structures in large quantities can be controlled. This is the first reported case of the direct growth of novel 3D self-assemblies of CdS nanorods (or nanopolypods). The morphology, structure, and phase composition of the as-prepared CdS products were examined by using various techniques (X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), high-resolution TEM, and Raman spectroscopy). On the basis of the results from TEM studies and our analysis, we speculate that in the present synthesis the L-CYSteine dominates nucleation growth and the ethylenediamine (en)-dominated, oriented- assembly process. Interestingly, the products obtained show a gradient evolution in color from light-yellow to dark-yellow, which implies that their intrinsic optical properties change, possibly due to variations in their special morphologies and structures. This facile solution-phase L-cysteine -assisted method could be extended for the controlled preparation of other metal chalcogenides nanostructures with complex morphologies.

Abstract:Highly uniform Cu2S nanocrystals with controllable sizes and shapes (circular and elongated) have been synthesized through a novel water-oil interface confined reaction. They can self-assemble into highly ordered multilayer superlattices. By controlling the size and shape of building block nanocrystals, the packing symmetry of the superlattice can be engineered. For circular nanocrystals, both fcc and hcp multilayer superlattices are found in the sample. For elongated nanocrystals, they can also generate a close-packed layer and further stack into a multilayer superlattice. The dipole moment of the inner nanocrystals is useful for their stacking. This work provides a simple bottom-up approach to integrate nanocrystals, as well as to adjust the packing symmetry of the final superlattice, which may have potential applications for nanomaterials and nanodevices in the future.

Abstract:Shape controlled synthesis of PbS nanoparticles, cubes, and nanowires has been realized by a so-called solvothermal–microemulsion technique in a sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/hexane/hexanol/water microemulsion system using different sulfur source. The effect of different sulfur source and temperature on the shape of PbS nanocrystallites was investigated. The results demonstrated that the combination of solvothermal process and microemulsion technique could provide a useful tool for the synthesis of other nanocrysals with unusual shape and structures.
